(USS Exeter –Ready Room - Medical Officer, Ensign JG Heinrich Kruse, M.D.- 0817)

Heinrich nervously assembled in the ready room. This was the first time the Captain had directly asked to see him. While he was not aware of any demerits, any summons struck his suspicions. But when Trip smiled, those suspicions fell away.

“Lieutenant Ravok, Lieutenant Cortez, Ensign Hammerfield, and Ensign Kruze, thank you all for joining me. I’ll be brief. I have been very impressed with your work of late, and it is time for me to show my appreciation and admiration.” When the Captain reached for four boxes, he was able to put it together and beamed with pride.

“Ensign Junior Grade Heinrich Kruze.”

“Yes sir,” Heinrich said as he stepped forward.

“Ensign Kruze, you have only been with us a short while, but your performance has been exemplary. I also know that Lieutenant Cortez owes you her life.”

Heinrich looked to Erin and said, “I was only following orders and did my best Captain.”

“Heinrich Kruze, I hereby promote you to the rank of Ensign Senior Grade and to all the rights and privileges therein. I also promote you to the position of acting Assistant Chief Medical Officer. You still have much to prove, but I have faith in you. In time that acting will come off and you will be a full ACMO. Congratulations Ensign.”

He did not expect to have risen through the ranks so quickly, but he also hadn’t expected to save a life on his third day on the job. Starfleet was turning out to be dangerous business, but full of opportunity and adventure. “Thank you sir, I will not let you down.”

“Now then, you are all dismissed.”

Acting Assistant Chief Medical Officer Heinrich began to walk out.
