smiled as Stan entered his office.

“I will be blunt with you ensign. You’re conduct as tactical officer left
much to be desired. Your love and care to protect this crew was evident.
However you tended to act imprudently, rashly, and overzealously, to the
detriment of those around you and to your career.”

“However, you have shown a willingness to improve, take feedback, and show
that you are more than just your mistakes, and for that I commend you.”

“The truth of the matter, after reviewing your request and your career in
tactical, one thing is certain. If you continue in the tactical department,
your career may be much shorter than either of us would like. The good news
is, its still early enough to fix, still early enough to get back on the
right track. So I am granting your transfer to the science division,
effective immediately.”

“I expect you to be an exemplary officer, and that your shenanigans are
behind you. I can’t keep moving you from department to department, hoping
that somewhere along the way you find the right fit or you figure it out. I
want you to excel here Stan, but there is an old adage to where I come
from, you got to know when to fish or cut bait. I expect you to be a model
officer, and I hope that the next time I call you in here is for a
promotion or to name you an ACSO,  but we’re not there yet. We could be
though, and consider this a fresh start.”
