“Ewan what are youhumming?”
Ewan turned to the crewwomanbeside him who had been working with him.
“What sorry?”
“You were hummingto yourself what song is that?”
“It’s Zombie by thecranberries.”
She a gave him alook.
“Why that song?”
He gave a smile.
“Its part of my medivacplaylist.”
She gave him a strangelook.
“You medivac playlist?”
“You know that Icome from Albatross Organisation and I work as part of their Mobile SurgicalTeam. One of their roles was patient triage and medivacs as well as surgery.”
She nodded.
“Long story short Ihave a play list that I play when I go on medivacs. Tunes that get me in themind set and to relax afterward. That one is the tune that I play as the craftis on its final run up to landing. It calms me and focuses my mind on what I amabout to do when we land. It also reminds me that even now in our lightened societypeople are still getting wounded and die. I can only help the ones that are infront of me, and I am not here to save the galaxy.”
“Do you miss itbeing here?”
Ewan paused for amoment.
“Yes and no. I meanwe have been busy and there have been some interesting times but there isnothing that speeds up the heart when you get off a shuttle and there are a hundredand fifty people all needing help and evacuation and you know that if you don’tget the severely injured one away fast, they will die but there is also twohundred more on their way and you have two shuttle crafts.”
He gave a slightsmile.
“Having your ownquarters and not sleeping in tents, using a bucket shower and basic facilities isnice. Also, the fact that we are in sickbay with all this modern technology. Withthe ability to replicate more drugs and equipment when needed. The treatments andcare we can do here is so much more then what I could do with my team in ourtent or small local building.”
He gave a shrug.
“You value thelittle things more when you’ve been you have been trying to do a laparotomywith a scalp and forceps. Not the laser ones I mean old school metal ones thatcut. We had deployed to a conflict area some where in the alpha quadrant somewhere near Jaros II two groups were having a turf war and it got ugly, so meand my team we were sent to make a primary evaluation begin to assist. So, we deploy, and this Ion storm rolls in out of nowhere can cut us off from out supportship. The storm affected most of our equipment by the time the support ship gotto us we were down to cloth bandages and had to hand suture with needles andcut with scalpel blades.”
“Sounds awful.”
Ewan grinned.
“It was hard don’tget me wrong but those is something exciting about working with out all thefancy tech that we take for granted and really go back the basics. In saying thatit was good to get the equipment drop when it came.”
They looked up atthe sound of approaching footsteps. She and flashed him a smile passed him aPADD which contained the latest patient updates. He nodded his thanks and gotback to work.
