 "Well this is new, I've never had to order someone to accept a promotion before."

"I don’t mean to put you in that position,” she replied looking back at it on the table.

"Truth of the matter is, you technically are already an Ensign Senior Grade. The paperwork cleared two days ago. You've been promoted officially for the last 24 hours. I just wasn't able to get this to you."

"I understand. I suppose it is a bit of an oddity,” she mulled the situation for a moment. It currently entirely one of her own making.

"So unfortunately you can't accept as your official personnel file has already been updated to reflect that you were promoted. You've earned this."

"Though perhaps, maybe you can help me understand why this doesn't feel right."

“Given the events of the last day. It just feels wrong sir. I’m sure you can understand that,” she wrinkled her forehead as she tried to succinctly explain before adding a compromise, “The records show that ive been promoted – maybe you could hold onto the pip sir for a while until I feel more ready to accept it? Taking it just now feels... like a betrayal. At the very least – can I have you permission to leave it off and ill put it somewhere safe?”
