Sleeford sat in silence for several seconds, taking a deep breath he
nodded, "Sorry sir."

"It's fine. You guys went through hell."

"hell is one way to describe it, watching people die, know that nothing you
do can change it, makes you feel.... ", Sleeford laughed slightly, "Like
you I suppose. I now understand how any commanding officer must feel
sending people on missions"

"Anyways this meeting is twofold, I wanted to check in and see how you were
holding up. That was the first goal. The second one was to talk about your
career."

Tensing Sleeford waited, he'd only recently changed from Security to Ops,
was he being changed again."

"Sir?"

"I was going to give this to you yesterday, that was the plan anyways. I
had filed the paperwork when we left Starbase Freedom, and was gonna hold a
ceremony with your staff, but then well, a murder happened. But now that
things have died down. Well here it is, lieutenant."

Trip then passed Paul a small box containing a black pip.

Sleeford sat there, had he misheard the captain, he was sure he'd just
called him Lieutenant, seeing the box, he slowly reached forward and gently
took it.

"From this moment forward, you are now Lieutenant Junior Grade Paul
Sleeford. Congratulations."

Taking the small pip, Sleeford placed it on his collar, "Thank you sir. "
