Mission: Murder on the Exeter Express

Day: 2

Stardate: 2445.12.02

(Earth - SFMHQ, Admirals Office - FltSrgnGnl VAdm Aimee Bracken - 2215)

Aimee had set back, clearing her calendar for the last hour, to allow
herself breathing and thinking space. There were numerous things going
through her mind, but she hadn’t got where she was by acting before she
each and every fact sorted in her mind before acting, if it were necessary.

She tapped a button on her desk, and standing up, moved over to the window
overlooking the StarFleet Medical Headquarters, and further away, the
Academy. She sighed deeply, watching assorted people come, and go each
about their business, each at varying points in their careers.

“Ma’am?” A voice from the doorway. “You called.”

The voice came from her aides, Commander Eddington. A quietly spoken,
highly professional man a similar age to her, with iron grey hair. She
trusted him utterly, and have never once given her cause to doubt that
trust.

“Why does she want to know about nanites?”

“Have I missed some conversation Ma’am?” He was used to this, working for
Admiral Bracken could be a bit of a whirlwind sometimes, he was however,
very fond of her.

Smiling gently, her face illuminated as her mind worked. “I’ve just had a
call from Ailynn. She tried to pull the classified on me.”

Eddington laughed. “She did that to you? Apple doesn’t fall far from the
tree. Up to something?”

“Perhaps, perhaps not.” She sighed, “However she’s asking really specific
questions that I don’t want to answer, but I want to know the reason that
she’s asking them. Get me the Exeter.”

“Priority one to the FO?” He pre-empted.

Aimee shook her head. “To the Captain.”

She sat back at her desk, and moments later the screen changed to the Fleet
logo whilst the connection was made, and eventually changed to reveal
Trip’s face.

“Captain. Sadly not a social call.” She smiled gently. “Ailynn is the most
intelligent person I know, but a sudden interest in something that she’s
only previously touched very lightly on is rather worrying, especially
where it involves tech that I helped invent.”

(Reply Trip)

She held his gaze and raised an eyebrow, he was no longer the little boy
whose nappy she’d changed, or grazed and bleeding knees she’d patched up
countless times, but she hoped he’d be at least a little forthcoming. “Tell
me what you can James.”
