Mission: A new day dawns

Day: 2

Stardate: 2446.01.29

(Earth- Home of Trip and Ashlyn Williams --Entertainment Room – SOPS/3O
Lieutenant Commander Tyrek Na'Re & CFO Lieutenant Ire Williams -2217)

Tyrek examined the table before him. Noticing there wasn't any clear shit
for him to take he looked at Ire.

" You're a lot different than your file. "

Ire frowned for a moment.

“In what way?”

" When I was assigned to the Exeter I practically ran to the nearest
terminal and read, in detail, the file of every department head on the
ship. Now some things were outside of my clearance levels, but from
everything I read on you , I was expecting you to be some hotshot who knows
it all with an ego larger than Exeter itself, but you are much more level
headed than I assumed. You're very approachable. " Tyrek remarked with a
friendly smile.

Ire grinned.

“Ow I was. At the academy during training. I could hardly get onto the
fighters because my head was so big. Then I graduated and realised that
being a starfleet officer was not the same as the academy. I needed to grow
up fast especially when I was put in charge of a squadron and its people.”

" Your file makes you out to be one of the best damn pilots in the fleet. I
wonder…" Tyrek paused and rubbed his chin.

Ire frowned interested in what Tyrek was going to say.

“Wonder what?”

" Have you heard about the Cheron class vessel being brought aboard the
Exeter any day now ?" He questioned Ire.

“Cheron. Um no I did not know that we were getting one. I have followed
some of its development but being on the Exeter and out in the black has
meant that I have not been able to keep up with some developments.”

He paused for a moment as he recalled what he could remember.

“It's a federation and romulan combined project about the size of a danube
runabout? But that’s about it”

Tyrek laughed and pointed at him.

" Lieutenant, it's much more than that. I actually think a pilot of your
caliber should take on for a test flight. There are currently 5 of them
ready to go. The one for the Exeter the CX-01 isn't clear for flight yet,
but the CX-05, and 03 are ready to go. Perhaps our captain would allow you
to indulge in a little flight time? "

“That would be great but the Captain may want to take her out himself as he
is a good pilot in his own right.”

" The way I see it , you're the Chief flight officer. It makes perfect
sense for you to spread your wings and get to know the beast for yourself
." Tyrek added and took his shot , missing it.

He took the shot and potted the ball he was aiming for.

“You seem to know alot about it? Did you have any input into its
development?”

" No, I didn’t, but when they unveiled it at a private showing for select
members of starfleet command , I was invited with the other 3 Romulan
officers in the exchange program. I'm no engineer but I read the specs on
the vessel and have retained a good bit of its performance highlights. "
Tyrek said.

 “What are the flight characteristics?”

Tyrek reached in his pocket and pulled out a small puck shaped device and
sat it on the edge of the pool table. A holographic interactive menu in the
romulan language appeared 10 inches above the device. Tyrek worked his way
through the menu and pulled up the specs for the cheron Class and changed
the setting to English so Ire could read it.

" I gave the captain a lengthy speech on the vessel, but I've had some wine
and I would give you the same experience." He laughed.

" Go ahead, check it out."

Ire moved over and looked at the specs of the Cheron. He quickly skimmed it
to get the rough idea of the cheron’s specifications and then re-read more
specifics bits. He looked up at Tyrek when he had finished.

“Wow, that is an impressive craft.”

" I heard one engineer say it had all the bells and whistles." Tyrek
remarked.

" It even has full cloaking capabilities."

“Yes I saw. It's a pity we could not get one of those for the Exeter but I
guess getting one on the Cheron will have to do.”

" Well it has type DK88 cloaking technology. In essence the craft itself is
a cloaking device, so in theory the Exeter could be hardwired to the Cheron
and could in theory…" Tyrek picked up his wine and put the glass to his
mouth and muttered quickly

" Cloak the Exeter." He drank the rest of his wine and sat the glass down.

" But I didn't tell you that." Tyrek waved his finger and gave Ire a
serious look.

“Are they getting spread across the fleet or are they only going to be made
in small batches?”

" I don't know, I mean I think we will see more vessels of a similar nature
down the road. We just have to see how the politics of our two governments
work things out. My hope is that we join the Federation and our fleets
combine , but it isn't that simple." Tyrek said, shaking his head.

Ire nodded.

“Yes unfortunately things like that are never simple.”

" Well first of all the United Federation of Planets is known for accepting
members on a world by world basis. The Republic is currently made of 11
sovereign planets with a 12th expected to join in a matter of weeks , maybe
even days. The Federation has never inducted more than 3 Planets at a time
and has only accepted multi-world members twice in its history. So in order
to join the Federation each planet of the Romulan Republic would have to
formally leave the Republic and join the Federation one by one, but that
particular course of action doesn't sit well with a lot of the people who
have spent nearly their entire lives bringing our scattered worlds
together. Many want the Federation to accept the Republic in its entirety
or not at all. " Tyrek explained and sighed.

Ire paused.

“Yes it would be very complicated and that kind of power dynamic shift
would shift the power very one way in the quadrant.”

" Sounds like you oppose our membership. " Tyrek remarked and raised a brow.

“Don’t get me wrong. Of course I want the Federation to grow and regain
what we have lost but I want it to be done in a way that would not cause
problems for everyone around us.”

Tyrek picked back up his device and deactivated, placing it back in his
pocket.

" There are threats out there in the delta and gamma quadrants that have
made their way here before, the Dominion made its way here and it took all
of us to beat them. We know next to nothing of the gamma quadrant, there
are even parts of the alpha quadrant that haven't been explored. If an
invasion force were to zero in on the small regions of space we call home ,
how well would we do against them ? That's not a chance I'm ready to take,
not to mention the Klingons have grown so frustrated with being confined
within the borders of their empire they have already started sending their
fleets into unclaimed space formerly occupied by the Star empire. We don't
need anymore wars among ourselves , we need peace and cooperation. "

“Of course we need to have peace and stability among ourselves. It will
lead to more prosperity among our neighbors which is good for everyone.”

" I'm glad we agree on that. I'd hate to start a war in this lovely
home…'Tyrek laughed and held up his hand.

" I'm joking."

Ire gave him a look before he smiled back.

“Yes coz I am not wanting to get on the wrong side of Ashlyn Williams by
damaging the house.”

He gave him a look.

“Yes her more than the Captain.”

Tyrek laughed and looked at the table.

" Well it seems like you are close to winning Lieutenant. It appears you
are cleaning the floor with me."

He looked at the table.

“That’s very kind of you but you still have an opportunity to beat me.”

" It's bad manners to beat your opponent while having pleasant
conversation." Tyrek quipped.

“Would you not be letting me win would you?”

Tyrek smiled.

" My goal isn't to utterly destroy you Lieutenant, if it were the game
would have been over about 5 minutes ago. " Tyrek pointed to Ire's hand.

" Everytime you are sure you're going to make your shot your pinky finger
doesn't touch your ring finger. Every time you've missed ,your pinky finger
is rested against the ring finger of your back hand."

Ire looked at his fingers before looking back at Tyrek.

“Well that’s interesting. I really must try and avoid using that tell next
time we play.”

Tyrek smirked.

" Always watch your opponents , even your friends. Two eyes can see double
the clues. Observe everything , after a while people become utterly
predictable, sometimes even boring. "

He concentrated on not moving his finger on the next shot.

“I am glad that you felt magananamums towards me to not wipe the floor with
me in five minutes.”

" Or was I just saying that to get inside your head ?" Tyrek asked with a
friendly smile.

" Sorry Lieutenant. I meant no offense, just Romulan humor. "

“Well you are our Strat Ops Officer so I guess playing mind games comes
with the territory but just to warn you that inside my head is not
somewhere you want to go poking around.”

He smiled back.

“You are not the first Romulan that I have worked with and I do have some
understanding about Romulan humor?”

" A Merek and a Shara , neither family overly Romulan, both families pretty
mild." Tyrwk remarked on the Romulans that Ire had served with." Well the
Mereks were once pretty prestigious, during the days of the empire that is.
They owned a plot of land nearly a third the size of the Terran continent
known as Australia, practically had their own country. The Sharas however,
I believe , were a farming family in a kinship unit with the Sylok clan of
the Krevit Valley " Tyrek hoped he remembered right.

“Where did your family come from? If you don’t mind me asking?”

Tyrek looked at Ire and straightened his posture.

" The same place the Mereks came from. We had an estate on their land , so
did a few other families. "

“Must have been interesting growing up on a planet where one wrong move or
press of a button could get you flushed out of an airlock.”

" I guess. All I have of Romulus is stories of how things used to be. I'm
from a Reman colony world called Eden. Remans are more tolerable and
friendly than they look. " Tyrek smiled and lined up for his shot .

“I have not had much experience working with Remans although we do have one
in tactical called Sytuk. I have not worked with him much be he seems a
good person to have when there is trouble.”
