Na’Rel & aCTO Ensign sg Jori, 1957)
"Excuse me, sir. I'm Ensign Jori. Am I disturbing you?"
Tyrek turned his gaze away from the sky and looked at her.
"No, not at all, Ensign Jori. I was just taking a moment to get some fresh
air.
Jori didn’t really know what to say. She needed to get to know the new
exchange officer, but he seemed like he wanted to be alone.
Tyrek could see a look on her face that she needed or wanted to say
something , perhaps this was a chance for small talk. He took a deep breath
and dove in.
" I hope you are unarmed, no baseballs hidden up your sleeve ?" He asked
jokingly, trying to make a jest at earlier events.
“Being in tactical and security, I can’t divulge if I’m armed or unarmed,”
said Jori. “I did have the ball I used to hit Cadet Tucker, but I gave it
to Captain Williams as a gift. I’m considering submitting a proposal that
the weapons division begin working on a new rifle that fires baseballs.”
"You certainly made my first experience at a ball game unforgettable. I
followed the rules of the famous baseball chant and I bought some peanuts
and crackerjacks, I even intended on rooting for the home team. " Tyrek
smiled and turned fully to face her.
“You have a story you can tell your grandchildren.” Jori chuckled.
Tyrek laughed at her remark.
" Grandchildren? Perhaps in another life Ensign. " He collected himself.
" Is there something I can do for you Ensign?"
Jori wondered why Tyrek said, in another life. He probably meant he chose
service over family, like she did.
“You can call me Jori.” She paused. “I was looking around; this place is
amazing. I didn’t know you were here. If you want alone time, I can leave.”
" You are not a bother Ensign Jori." He stopped ,catching himself.
" You must forgive me. It's against every bit of manners to disregard your
rank. I feel like I'm going to have to explain that to a lot of people." He
held up his hand.
" Sorry. I didn't need alone time, I just needed to get out of there. "
Tyrek said, pointing back to the house.
" The walls felt like they were closing in for a moment or two."
"I understand using honorifics," said Jori. "They pounded that into us at
the academy. As far as the walls closing in, I'm a tactical officer, not a
doctor."
Jori didn't know why she was feeling discomfort in the air. It was like a
heavy cloud on a humid day. Normally, it was easy for her to talk with
someone she just met. She wondered if she was bearing some sort of
animosity towards Tyrek because of what Ravok Shara did.
"In any case, Captain Williams said no ranks tonight, so it should just be
Tyrek and Jori.” She chuckled inwardly at saying the captain rank.
Tyrek tried thinking of a friendly and appropriate way to address the
situation, but realized honesty was the best approach.
" Captain Williams does not and will not dictate my use of manners. " He
smiled.
" Being raised in a society that puts so much emphasis on station and
title, makes it slightly difficult to adjust. " He responded , not trying
to be rude but also trying to explain a cultural nuance.
"I understand about trying to adjust," said Jori.
Things still felt awkward, so Jori decided to dive in headlong.
"So, why did you decide to join the exchange program?"
Tyrek looked up at the sky and laughed softly.
" Well Ensign Jori, I joined because it felt like the right thing to do at
the time. Plus I personally feel that we should all try doing a little good
with the time we have. "
Jori mused. An answer without actually saying anything.
"I joined because I want to be more than what I'm expected to be," said
Jori.
Tyrek smirked.
" Seems to be a universal feeling, the longing to be a part of something
that makes us somehow more than what we are as individuals….I do however
have a question for you. Did you find it difficult having to meet with the
admirals to discuss today's occurrence at the baseball field ? " Tyrek
asked.
Jori was glad the meeting was finally going somewhere, rather than just
politely dancing around each other's comments.
"Difficult? No. More embarrassed," said Jori. "I was in shorts and a torn
shirt and I was covered with dirt and grass. The worst part was wondering
what disciplinary actions were coming."
" Did your level of worry match your received disciplinary outcome ?" Tyrek
asked. He couldn't help but be intrigued.
“I thought I might get kicked out of Starfleet,” said Jori. “I admitted to
intentionally hitting Josh, so as things worked out, I worried more than I
should have.”
" Interesting, your actions of aggressive sportsmanship led to a brawl, you
struck a Cadet and he even used racist remarks against you , yet both of
you remain and retain your status. Starfleet is a lot more forgiving than
what I'm accustomed to." He remarked.
“I’m glad it is,” said Jori. She was hesitant on what to say next when an
idea came to her. “Have you ever been a teacher to someone younger and less
experienced than you?”
Tyrek nodded his head awkwardly.
" Yes ,of course. I served as a Chief Weapons Officer aboard my former
ship, it's actually encouraged that we work with junior officers to further
instill a sense of duty and to guide them. Most Centurions...ummm" He
paused to think of a rank equivalent.
" Lieutenants , most Lieutenants came to me even when I was one of them. "
He laughed.
"Admiral Williams ordered me to choose a senior officer to mentor me." Jori
was still stewing about that. "Since you're an outsider to the Federation,
and in some ways I am as well, maybe we could learn from each other."
Tyrek crossed his arms over his chest.
" Hmm, well that is certainly what the terrans would call thinking outside
the box.
Don't get me wrong, your thought process isn't flawed, but I'm not a
starfleet officer. I'm simply acting the part."
"In the interest of full honesty, I don't want a mentor, so me asking you
is more a formality to appease the admiral, though I know I can learn from
you," said Jori.
" Here's the deal." Tyrek exclaimed and stepped closer to Jori.
" I will defend your decision to anyone who challenges it. You help me
adapt to local culture to the best of your abilities and I will teach you
everything I know about being a weapons officer and transferring that to
your role as the Chief Tactical officer and I will teach you the methods I
learned to command respect from those who serve under you and even show
you things you won't learn from any starfleet officer instruction manual."
Tyrek declared and extended his hand to her.
" Do we have an agreement? "
Jori was intrigued. "Yes, we have a deal." She shook his hand.
" Excellent." Tyrek exclaimed.
