"Thank you, lady," said Ronnie.

"You're welcome," said Jori.

"We go play now. Bye, lady."

Jori smiled at Ronnie's genuine appreciation for the gift. Jori also began wondering what it would be like to be a mother.

Looking at Ashlyn Williams, one really could say she was aglow. There was a new life growing inside her and that had to be indescribable.

If Jori spent her life in Starfleet, because of her oath, there wouldn't be children. Perhaps she was beginning to understand what her mother meant about knowing what she was sacrificing.

Jori awoke from her reverie at the sound of a familiar voice, a voice that chilled her insides.

"Oh, Ensign Jori. Didn't expect to see you so soon."

Jori straightened her posture.

"Admiral Williams, sir. I didn't expect to see you either."

She wanted to roll her eyes. Why wouldn't he come to his son's home for an off-duty dinner party?

The admiral scooped up Ronnie.

"Have a restful evening, Ensign," said Admiral Williams, "and if they ask you to put a raw steak on your black eye, don't let 'em. It's a waste of a good steak."

"I won't, sir." Jori had no idea what he meant.

When the admiral left with Ronnie, Jori was in the middle of the yard, the dog looking up at her.

"Keep your nose to yourself." Her voice was stern.

Jori still had two gifts to give. The aroma of something cooking from the back drew her attention, so she started in that direction, hoping the dog wasn't following.
