Mission: A new day dawns
Day: 2
Stardate: 2446.01.29
(Starfleet Academy - ACAD CO’s Office - ACADCO, Vice Admiral Duke Williams
and aFO, Commander Alex Jones -1330)
“Commander, thank you for joining me, though I guess you didn’t really have
a choice.”
“Hobson’s choice one might say Sir yes.” Alex spoke gently, shifting in his
seat.
“Now then I am trying to get to the bottom of all of this, where were you
when the brawl started?”
“In the stands…bleachers Sir, third row back, seat eleven as I recall.”
“And what do you remember about the start of the chaos.”
“I was sat back trying to figure out the rules. Not my sport as you’ll
know, it seemed to me since you ask that the pitcher made a decent bodyline
ball, gamesmanship perhaps but nothing illegal, and the batter decided that
assault was his best option.”
“What happened after that?”
Alex shrugged, and frowned gently recalling the incident. “All hell broke
loose, I’ve no idea if there were scores to settle, but it got ugly
quickly. I’ve seen bad manners on the Rugby pitch, but never on your more
traditional American sports like baseball or football.”
“Did you try and stop the chaos, get security to do their job?”
“Stewards seemed on it, they got their backsides moving once it kicked off,
since they’d moved to their jobs it seemed fair that they had called.”
Duke nodded.
“I moved to assist other Command Officers in trying to calm things down,
Captain Williams, and the Romulan chap were ordering calm. Dragged a couple
away and handed them to the stewards. One of them had tried his hand at a
suckerpunch, but had no weight to it.” He pointed to the back of his head
where the cadet had thrown a punch.
"did you retaliate?"
Shaking his head, Alex spoke. “Not at all Admiral. As any footage will
verify. I’m not in the habit of hitting kids half my size and half my age.”
"what would you say caused the fight?"
Alex shifted in his seat and sighed thoughtfully. "That was the thing, it
had the smell of something that had been brewing. Nothing I can put my
finger on, just looks, glances that kind of thing. It was confirmed by what
I heard later when I pulled the batter off the Deltan officer."
“Which was?”
"Called her Baldy." He sipped at the glass of water. "Now, rank aside for a
moment Sir. If you called me that, mano a mano. I'd think you rude but not
much more." He rubbed the top of his head. I have after all inherited the
thin hair genes."
Duke nodded.
"However you say that to a Deltan that makes it a different kettle of fish
doesn't it Sir."
“I see, well I will need to talk to both Ensign Jori and Cadet Tucker. A
lot will depend on the intent of the comment. Am I dealing with an idiot
who didn’t think or was this something intentional and premeditated. Thank
you for bringing that to my attention. Need to find out if I have to deal
with a racist cadet or someone who needs to attend cultural training.”
“Your purview Sir, not mine thankfully.” He said honestly.
“Were there any other slurs hurled at the Ensign?”
“Not that I heard no Admiral. Could have been a one off, heat of the
moment, but I’m just telling you what I heard Sir.”
“Do you know if the hit by pitch was intentional?”
“I’m not sure.” He said. “Like I said not my sport. Were it Cricket I’d say
the first pitch was a legitimate ball to the body, short of a length, wakes
the batsman up, can force an early mistake. I don’t really get baseball.”
“How would you rate the response of the officers in attendance. Did they
appropriately mitigate the brawl or did they add to the chaos?”
“The pumping soundtrack didn’t help, I’ll admit. However, the other
officers did their best with things at their disposal. Each of them tried
every trick, Captain Williams was doing the very best he could, but was
ignored despite an impressive presence. The Romulan chap too. I felt bad
for him, Not sure it was the best show for Starfleet behaviour Sir.”
“No it was not.”
“For my part in it you have my formal apologies Admiral.”
“Either way, it’s clear by your actions you tried to involve security in
your attempt to get things under control. I have no further questions
unless you’d like to add anything.”
“None as of this moment Admiral. Only a thank you for the time to fairly
say my piece Sir. Should something cross my mind later, I will message your
Aides Sir, if that is appropriate.”
"it would be appreciated. Dismissed."
He nodded. “Thank you Sir.”
