(USS Exeter - Ready Room -aFO Cmdr Alex Jones - 1804)
"Well we got her brand new, so I hope she is impressive." Trip said with a
smile.
Alex smiled and nodded. “Of course, one of the newest in the Fleet and all
that. Class ship too.”
"Commander, I hope that, well the age difference between us won't cause any
issues." Trip said in a stoic tone. "You;re a career officer, and there are
many in your spot who have called me behind my back or to my face a
fortunate little brat. I don't know how long Commander Bracken's sabbatical
will be. So before we get too deep into our working relationship, well AJ,
I just thought I should address the elephant in the room. I hope that is
alright."
~AJ…? I kind of like that.~ He appreciated the man’s easy manner, knowing
that this would be the umpteenth time today he’d have had this
conversation, there was no sense that Williams was talking down to him.
Nodding once more, he shrugged. “That’s fair.” drawing a thoughtful breath
he continued. “The me from even ten years ago may have done. Not out of
disrespect you understand, more a lack of real understanding. I’d always
considered that there were three kinds of Officer. The office types,
manning a desk at HQ, the ones that are out at the front actually doing the
hard work. Somewhere in between those two camps I’d always somewhat
dismissively put Fleet Brats as most call them.”
(Reply Trip)
“The me that’s here now sees things differently, the two main types of
Officer stand, and always will, but I’ve come to realise something about
the Fleet Brats. Yourself, your erstwhile First Officer are perhaps prime
examples of the ones that I’d overlooked, young, highly intelligent and
able, and raised in an environment where devotion to duty, to an ideal is
second nature. It may be argued that yours and Bracken’s family name is
known, but it’s your own actions that precede you. You’ve got to where you
have not from preferential treatment, but by being an Officer who stands up
and not just talking the talk, you walk the walk.”
(Reply Trip IYW)
“So yeah, as to the elephant in the room, you’ll not have a problem
Captain. If I ever happen to disagree with you, it will be done so
privately, respectfully and certainly not out of a misplaced prejudgement
of your age. I’ve seen Officers older than I who I wouldn’t trust to find
their backsides with a map. A younger age is no indication of lesser
competence Captain.” He smiled, and shrugged, his reply had been more
verbose than he had actually intended.
