(USS Exeter – Morgue – Nurse – CPO- Ewan McDonald - 1145)

Ewan looked down at the body of Ensign Kyros Ryelle that was lying outon the mortuary slab and paused before opening his tricorder. He had beentasked with cataloging his possessions and any forensic material that was onhis body. After that he would be put into one of the mortuary pods for storageuntil they reached home. Normally he would have help but Sickbay was rammedwith new patients, so he was here by himself.

He knew that Bajorans had specific rituals and rights when it came totheir dead but unfortunately, he had to do this as part of the protocol withthe sudden death of a member of the ships company.

“Hallo Ryelle. My name is Ewan, I am a nurse and I am going to scan youwith a tricorder and take a few readings if that`s okay?”

He paused for a moment before starting the scan. He knew that somepeople would think that he was strange to talk to the dead as if they werestill alive but when he was a student nurse all wide eyed and eager. He had assistedthe Senior Sister of the Operating Theater Department in caring for a patientwho had died on the operating table. They had carefully cleaned the patient placedher in a shroud and then waited for the porters to come and take the patient tothe morgue. He had remembered that she had not left the patient even though ithad taken a long while for the porters to arrive with the gurney. She had thenescorted the patient out of the department and to the doors of the morgue. Onthe walk back, she had told him that just because the patient had died does notmean that you stop treating with the respect and dignity that they deserve. Asa nurse you care for patients from before they are born to after they die. Shehad said that if she he was not able to do that for every single patient thenhe did not deserve to have the responsibility and the honor of caring forpeople in their time of need.

The tricorder beeped as it completed the scan.

“Thank you for that. Now I am sorry, but I am going to need to removeyour uniform. Don`t worry I`ll keep you decent throughout okay.”

He took a laser cutter and carefully cut along the uniform arms and alongits sides so that is was split into two. He then covered Ryelle`s whole bodywith a shroud which he tucked under his shoulders.

“I am going to remove the top part of your uniform top and trousers.Sorry about this.”

He pulled on the bottom edge of the uniform top then he had leftuncovered which slid out and then careful put it into an evidence bag. He thesame with the trousers which he tagged and placed in the corner beside him.

“I need to role you slightly to get the other half`s sorry.”

He rolled Ryelle carefully off the slab and quickly pulled the otherparts of his uniform and placed them also into evidence bags. The bags werethen taken to a storage container where they were sealed inside waiting forfurther analysis.

“Sorry about that.”

He quickly pulled the shroud that had slipped off Ryelle`s shoulder whilehe was rolling him.

“Now that unpleasant bit is over. Let`s get you cleaned up a bit shallwe. I am sure some of your friends will be visiting in a bit and we need tomake sure you are ready.”

He moved over a bowl with warm cleaning water and a cloth. The bowl hada particle analyzer which would scan any matter that was removed from him whenhe cleaned him. He began going from Ryelle`s head to his feet working slowlyand methodically talking to him all the time explaining what he was doingtalking about his experiences before joining the Exeter, about his family andfriends. When he had finished he placed the cloth back in the bowel and movedit back into the corner. He stepped back and placed a hand gently onto Ryelle`sshoulder.

“I am Ewan McDonald from the Clan McDonald may my ancestors watch overthe spirt of Kyros Ryelle on his journey to the prophets.”

He carefully pushed the slab back into mortuary pod opening which wasinserted into the wall. There was a soft click as the hatch came down andsealed in place.

“Rest now my friend. Your journey has ended.”

He paused for a moment paying his respects before he turned and headedfor the door towards the living patients who would also need his help.
