Mission: Murder on the Exeter Express
Day: 2
Stardate: 2445.12.02
(USS Exeter - Day 2 – Main Science Lab - CSO Office - CSO Lt Jg Erin Cortez
- 1310)
“We have a few options. One – An intense search of the ship bow to stern.
Two – We think up why we can't detect them and try to tweak the scanners.
Three – We find some way to force the person's hand into using them. Four –
All of the above.”
Sighing, Erin rubbed her forehead, “None of those options sound easy. We
have to think that the person or even, persons who did this are reasonably
clever and have a good working knowledge of starfleet operations and rules
of investigation.”
“I never said the options were easy,” she gave a little shrug before adding
more, “The problem with a full search of the ship is that it might give
whomever took them an opportunity to use or place them – but it could be
enough to provoke them into moving them to a new hiding place and giving us
a window to locate them?”
“Perhaps. But again, this person or persons were smart enough to kill a
highly decorated starfleet intelligence officer…” She paused a second as
the sight of Nix’s face flashed into her mind, “... and get in and out of
his quarters undetected.”
“It all hypothetical – without know more about who we are looking for it's
like playing a game of chess where you can only see your own pieces,” The
young officer scratched her head and then gave Erin a look, “You didn’t
take them did you?”
Raising an eyebrow, Erin leant forward, resting her elbows on her desk,
“Are you seriously asking a head of department if they stole from their own
backyard?”
“Sorry – I had to ask – you’d be surprised how often the response to that
can catch someone out when they don’t expect to be asked,”
“Despite the current rumours on board the ship, i had nothing to do with
the death of Commander Nix.”
(reply Hammersfield)
“Look, the best thing to do would be to talk with Lieutenant Ravok. At
present, i have been questioned in regards to the incident. It may be
better for him to make the decision on what course of action is best to
take.”
(Reply Hammersfield)
“I can only suggest what i would do in his shoes. However, due to my
current predicament, any course of action i suggest maybe seen as a
potential attempt to conceal evidence and divert the investigation in a
direction that would lead it away from where it should be focused.”
(reply Hammersfield)
Erin tapped a few buttons on her console and handed a PADD to the ensign,
“Here is a list of what was taken. Lieutenant Ravok will more than likely
have the same list so speak with him about the best course to take. This
may be something connected although it could be an attempted diversion from
the real course of action that they are taking.”
(Reply Hammersfield)
Erin nodded, “Thankyou for your time, Ensign. You have quite the brain on
you. Keep it up and i see good things for you in your career.”
