Then she went into one of the two smaller rooms adjoining her office, which she used not only as counseling rooms, but for her private meditations. She had made the decision to create new methods for using her empathic faculties -- so that she could read others without being detected -- as she had been by the Romulan commander, and also to experiment with using her empathy as a sending device to create confusion in an enemy. Though these were not things she had anticipated doing, when she was a cadet, she had begun to realize their value. She looked upon them now as being an additional form of martial arts, not so different from Hapkido. Transferring her consciousness to a level just above that of mundane thinking and feeling, she visualized her empathy as a pool of light, then narrowed the pool to a beam, then narrowed it more, while yet retaining her openness to insight. Then she visualized the narrow beam itself going dark, invisible yet real. And she moved it out away from her body, into the next room, then through the wall and into the corridor. There, she dectected the emotions of two crewmembers, each feeling rushed and a little nervous. She didn't probe beneth the surface, just lingered long enough to be sure that neither of them recognized anything unusual. Then, satisfied, she brought her awareness back into her body. ~Ah, that went well! I hope the technique works as well on Romulans. And I hope I'll have the opportunity to find out before very long.~ She went into the next phase of her meditation, a somewhat trickier technique. She detached a part of her awareness, floating out from her body, yet retaining conscious contact with her physical self. Then, with the detached part of her mind, she created a sense of confusion and loss of balance. It was a most unpleasant sensation, but it was only within a part of herself, it was-- more than anything-- like watching a nightmare She kept her dual awareness for several minutes, then dissipated the negative feelings, before bringing the parts of her mind back together. ~Well, I'm content with my progress. But I have no way to test it. I certainly can't use any crew member as a test subject! I just hope it works when and if I need it.~ Then walking back to her outer office, she went to the replicator and ordered a cup of coffee. She was still sipping it when she heard the Captain's communication: "All senior officers, report to the Bridge." (USS Spectre, Bridge, Kahila Lono, 13:48) Kahila walked onto the Bridge, just as L'Tal beamed back onboard. She hurried to her accustomed place, and watched as the Spectre began firing at the Xenolithe and their living ships. ~More beautiful ships. What a horrible waste,~ she thought. (reply any) posted by Josephine Goodman (Shuttle Kewarra, CONN, Lt(JG) L'Tal - 13:45) L'Tal was trying desperately to escape the Xenolithe attack with only minor sucess. The Kewarra's shields were down to 26% and despite throwing all available power into the shuttle's shields and engines there was no way it ws going to flee the attackers. L'Tal looked up to see the Spectre moving towards the engagement at high speed. Soon the Xenolithe gave up on the tiny shuttle and and targeted their weapons at the prized Federation battleship, but not before one final volley that eradicated the Kewarra's shields and most of it's other functions. L'Tal had about 5 seconds to live... (USS Spectre, Bridge - 13:49) It had all happened so fast and L'Tal found himself momentarily disorientated. He was soon brought back to reality by the CO. "Shields up, Lieutenant, take the CONN" ordered Ktell as he returned to the command chair. Without wasting another second L'Tal was back at his post and piloting the Spectre away from danger. "Captain, we've a badly garbled incoming message from Starfleet Command!" announced Lt Gort, the Ferengi officer nearest to L'Tal. "Great, store it for now" replied the Captain. "Lt L'Tal, prepare to lay in a course back out of this area of space, warp 5." "Aye sir, course laid in, awaiting your order to engage" stated L'Tal with the calmness only Vulcans can produce in the heat of battle. (Reply CO, Any) (Posted by Ian Walker) --- (USS Spectre, Bridge, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 13.45) Kevel was looking over the readings, having placed his glasses onto his face. The readings didn't tell him much, other than the simple fact they were in a piece of the galaxy that was the red headed stepchild of it's fellow mother and father systems. There were spacial land mines everywhere and as the search continued, the picture continued to look even worse. Suddenly, he detected something faintly on the screens. Something biologic, something very much alive. Three signals. Very faint. But closing fast. And before he could alert Remae, the three ships came out of where he had spotted them seconds ago. These cursed evil creatures were smart and dangerous. He clicked the channel open to the Romulan counterpart. Nothing. The channel remained silent. Kevel growled deep in his throat. He was being ignored, plain and simple. There was no spirit of cooperation in this and if the Romulans wanted to play that game, so could he. But diplomacy would come first. He spoke into the microphone of his headset. "Very well, sub lieutenant." He turned to the screen "Commander Kevel! Will you find out what the Romulans want to do? They've been silent for far too long!" Richard silently cursed the Romulan's behavior. They were as they were, and there wasn't much he could do to change that overnight, but it was not a good sign for your cooperative combatant to ignore you during a combat situation. It was not a sign of friendship. And it angered the commander to be snubbed. Suddenly the calm voice of his tactical counterpart came into his head. "My commander has advised me to contact you and suggest you pull back to avoid getting into the crossfire." The voice was monotone, but it held something malicious, something Kevel wasn't counting on. And it wasn't something he was going to accept. "Lt L'Tal, prepare to lay in a course back out of this area of space, warp 5." "Aye sir, course laid in, awaiting your order to engage." Kevel stood, without being aware he did. His anger at what they were about to do laid heavily on the warrior's heart. The Romulan's would have something to hold against him and the ship. And her captain. Yet, he realized it was a fight they couldn't win. The Romulan's had a better chance. Richard slowly sat back down again and took a deep breath. "Red Claw, we are prepping a course back out of this area of space at warp five. Will advise further when I have more information for you. Channel remains open on our end. Kevel out." Richard closed his eyes for a moment and opened them, facing the captain. It wasn't the greatest start to a mission, but it would have to do. For now. (reply Remae, Romulans, any, ) (posted by sulu) (USS Spectre, Bridge, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 13.48) "Captain, the Romulans are now hailing us! We're being instructed to fall back.", said the Ferengi at the OPS station, Remae turned to his CONN Officer. "Hold your course, Mr L'Tal, looks like the Romulans are finally entering the fight!", said Remae, noticing the viewscreen image of the Nageri ships begin to receive a flourish of green fire from the Romulan Ship. (Reply from L'Tal) "They are moving to an attack vector on the third enemy vessel!". "That they are, Mr Gort, however, we're not going anyway, bring us around on a parallel course and continue firing. "Red Claw, we are prepping a course back out of this area of space at warp five. Will advise further when I have more information for you. Channel remains open on our end. Kevel out." Remae spun around to the Commander, "Belay that Commander Kevel, we're not going anywhere. Fire photons.", he said. More fire from the Nageri sent the shields blazing all around them as the Spectre, smart, quick and manoeuvrable, spun in and out of the oncoming fire. =^= Cambridge to Bridge, sickbay standing by. What is our status? =^= ~ Great timing Doctor ~ "Kahila, answer the Doctor.", said Remae as he concentrating on the screen an explosion blew out a monitor aft of him, sending a few people flying. (Reply from Lono) "Okay, that's enough, warm up the Flux Canon, Pierce, prepare to fire on my command. Hail the Xenolithe; give them one chance to surrender before we fire." Remae didn't expect them to answer but if he was going to kill more of these creatures, he wanted them to at least have the chance to surrender. (Reply from Gort, L'Tal, Lono, Kevel, Cambridge, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) --------------- (USS Spectre, Science Lab 1 - CSO Jon Walker- 1400) Jon walked into the Science lab,his first visit since his arrival on the Spectre. Jon walked in to find one of his Science Officers hard at work, Jon recognized him as Ensign Horacio Tyrell. Jon walked up to Tyrell and placed the samples he had gotten from the Nageri vessel. Jon looked at his Science Officer, "Pleased to meet you Horatio I'm Jon Walker the new CSO" Jon then took the samples out of the case and handed one of them to Horatio. "Here are the samples I got from the Nageri vessel, we need to find out as much out as possible about these beings, like how the Xenolithe control them how they survive" (USS Spectre, Bridge, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 14.00) The battle had been hard, two of the Nageri had been killed but the third had fled, the Spectre was unable to pursue unlike the Romulans who didn't want their prey to escape. "Sickbay, this is the Bridge - causality report?", he said, nursing his own wound, his left arm was bleeding a little and he had put some cloth around it, that would hold it for now. (Reply from Sickbay) "Keep me informed. How bad is it?", said Remae, who had called the ACEO, Ensign Longfellow to the Bridge for a moment from his repair stations. (Reply from Longfellow) "Concentrate on the shields and the weapons, the cloak and the warp drive won't do us any good out here.", said Remae, nodding to the Engineer, "If you want to use anyone, you have permission to ask them." (Reply from Longfellow) Remae looked around at the Bridge - what a mess, the Spectre had a rough time dealing with the Xenolithe, if it hadn't been for the Romulans, they wouldn't have survived, even so, he couldn't shake the feeling that the Red Claw was holding back looking after them, just to see what they were made of. The lights came back on to full strength as Ensign Gort, working hard at his station reported, "Impulse power is back online." The viewscreen showed an aft view of the Spectre, drive plasma was leaking from the starboard nacelle, like a glowing trail, anyone could follow it and discover where they were. "Ensign Walker, any sign of the Romulans?", he asked, not expecting the sensors to be worked well without main power. but wherever they are, they were covering the Spectre's back. (Reply from Walker) "Very well, thank you, L'Tal, see if you can get us deeper into the system, we have to start looking for more Xenolithe, wherever the Romulans are, I am sure they'll keep an eye on us.", said Remae, once the course had been laid in, the ship engaged its engines and began to move, slowly, into the system they were going to have to search to find a base of operations, or something that would confirm the presence of a full time Xenolithe force. Even though they had found some, they had to be sure. "Gort, transfer that message from Starfleet Command to my Ready Room, Lt Lono, you have the Bridge.", he said, walking amongst the rubble and destroyed stations to get to the doors to his office. (USS Spectre, Bridge, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 14.15) "Computer, decode message - Ktell Epsilon Gamma Nine." << Acknowledged, message is 45% fragmented >> "Remae to Gort, Lieutenant, can you spare some computer resources to try and repair this message faster? I'll view what I can but if you can repair it, that'll be useful." (Reply from Gort) "Understood computer, play message.", said Remae, listening while getting himself some Bajoran Tea. ~ Ah Commodore Kaitrin Devlin ~ =^= Captain, normally I would insist that this information /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ warn you that the information you are about to receive appears nowhere on any official records, for information /buzzzzzincomprehensible/. If this incident were to become public knowledge it would be almost /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ war with the RSE. And that, as you know, we cannot afford at the moment. =^= ~ Oh joy ~ "About a year ago, the USS Nimitz was on what /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ routine mission investigating a message requesting help from an area previously thought to be uninhabited. Shortly after her arrival she was attacked by a Romulan /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ be /buzzzzzincomprehensible/, under the command of one Commander /buzzzzzincomprehensible/. The attack /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ unprovoked and since the Nimitz /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ shields up fully, almost completely successful. Casualties /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ horrendous; I believe over one /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ complement were killed, /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ once they were boarded by the Romulans. Some died in combat /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ executions, /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ diplomatic way of putting it. A virus /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ borders, later identified as an ancient /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ Windows, wreaked havoc with the Nimitz's computer systems." Commodore Devlin continued, as best as Remae could make out, the Romulans killed, maimed and basically went mad with revenge. Marines, Security, Engineering, Sickbay, it made no difference. =^= Thanks to some heroic work by the officers and crew, /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ commended by Admiral Eileen Greeley, the borders were first contained and then gradually repelled. A distress beacon was also launched, and /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ CEO got enough power up to power /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ weapons systems, the Romulan ship was targeted and its cloak damaged. The sudden appearance of a previously undetected Klingon vessel /buzzzzzincomprehensible/, and the /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ withdrew, unable /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ capture the Nimitz without the Klingons /buzzzzzincomprehensible/. /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ was allegedly acting without authority but the fact that he not only continues to serve the RSE but /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ seems to indicate friends in very high places if not actual involvement by the Senate. You might also take into consideration that the Nimitz was so badly damaged /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ months to make the journey back to Geneva. =^= =^= Commander Talath is to be regarded with the highest degree of mistrust, Captain. He is on past /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ capable of turning on you and attempting to capture or destroy your ship. The Spectre's phase cloak would /buzzzzzincomprehensible/ indeed for him to give to the RSE. Under no circumstances is that to happen. I trust I make myself plain? =^= The viewscreen winked of as Remae's hand shook a little, spilling his tea over his desk. ~ Talath!! ~ << Additional information has been attached from Starfleet Command >> Remae read the additional information that had been sent by the Subspace Probe and he nodded at the screen. "Captain to Lono, Pierce, Drizzt report to the Captain's Ready Room.", he said, closing the channel before anyone could reply to the message. ~ Talath ~ (USS Spectre, Ready Room, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 14.20) It wasn't long before the requested officers had reported into the Ready Room, silence filled the room before the CO looked up at them. "Commander Talath is known to Starfleet, he was responsible for a massacre on the USS Nimitz, where he killed a lot of the crew. why he is helping now, I don't know.", Remae's voice fought down the anger, with the Spectre, there was no way they were going to be able to take on a Warbird, even if they were at full operating capacity, which they weren't. "Ensign Gort is repairing the message, Lt Lono, ask him to set up the message so we can view it as it is being replaced and ask the Ferengi to monitor the process. Major Drizzt and Lieutenant Orde, when we're through with the Xenolithe and this mission, Talath may think to try and take the Phase Cloaking Device from the Spectre, we can't stop the Warbird so we'll have to make do to slow him down, if he boards." "Secure the Spectre, every entrance, every exit, I want the entire ship locked down, double the Security in Engineering and other vital system, from now on, everyone works a double shift. understood?", said Remae, who looked up once more before adding, "Phasers are to be set on kill from this moment on, Xenolithe or Romulans, if they come over, I want them dead!" (Reply from Orde and Drizzt) "In the meantime, we'll have to pretend we don't know or at least, pretend that we know that they know what we know until this mission is complete, we continue. we'll be running into the first planets of this system soon, they'll all need to be surveyed, have teams prepared for scouting and insertion, the call could come at anytime, any questions?", he said, looking up once more. (Reply from Orde and Drizzt or Lono) "Dismissed, one moment Kahila.", he said, as the other two left the Ready Room, Remae wanted a private chat with the First Officer. "There was another part of the mission addressed to me from Command regarding command, they've accepted my recommendation for your promotion, congratulations, Lieutenant Commander Lono.", Remae managed a small smile before handing over a small box that contained her new pips. (Reply from Lono) "We'll have a formal ceremony as soon as this nightmare is over. but for now, congratulations.", he said, extending his hand. (Reply from Lono) "It's well earned, Commander. now, return to the Bridge, I'll be there shortly. Well done.", he said, nodding, "One other thing, although I debated not mentioning this to you. we've been ordered not to allow the Cloaking Device to fall into enemy hands, under any circumstances. if they do come and we can't stop them, I'll order the destruction of the Spectre, understood?" (Reply from Lono) Nodding sympathetically as the First Officer left, Remae was alone once more, his anger was still there, and he doubted it was going to go anywhere for quite sometime, he looked at the hand phaser. He had been wearing it for sometime but he couldn't sit down with the uncomfortable thing on his hip. picking it up, he increased the power setting to kill. Standing once more, he placed the phaser in its pocket just as the comm. Sounded. =^= Captain, we've a planet ahead =^= "Thank you L'Tal, standard orbit.", he said, heading for the door. (USS Spectre, Bridge, CO, Captain Remae Ktell - 14.45) "Ensign Walker, what can you tell me about the planet?", he said, sitting as his seat once more. (Planet information please Jason) "I see.", said the CO as he turned to the CONN Officer, "L'Tal, take a shuttle and perform a low level scan of this planet, quick pass and see if the sensors can detect anything, make sure the shuttle sends it data directly to the CSO so we can monitor, we'll have to do this on each planet we come across, so lets get it right!", the Bajoran said as he watched the CONN Office leave his station. (Reply from L'Tal) Scanners limited, no warp drive, weapons depleted, a reengage Romulan Madman on their hands, probably as mad as the Tal Shiar, this was turning into one nasty mission. (Reply from All) (Posted by Anthony Keen) <> (USS Spectre, Personal Quarters, Ensign(jg) Hank Longfellow - 13:52) "Impulse engines are being powered up," called out one of the engineers as Hank checked the board and nodded. "Give them full power for them and keep the reserves on standby to be used whenever they want them," Hank said as he glanced over his shoulder for a moment then looked back with a worried frown as he noted that weapons systems were pulling power. "Shields are being hit and depleted currently," reported a female voice from one of the workstations. "They are now down to sixty percent. I shall endeavor to maintain them if not make compensating adjustments," the Vulcan reported and Longfellow moved to look over her shoulder for a moment. "Pull in from the secondary systems if need be but get those shields up to power," Hank said before he moved from her workstation towards the next one. "Shields have been dropped for transporter beam usage," the woman stated flatly. "Recycling up as much as I can while they are down in that area." "I think someone just blew up a shuttle," one of the other engineers said and Hank nodded. "Probably why they are doing a beam out in all of this," Hank muttered as he moved to the Officer On-Duty desk and checked the PADD with the damage control teams on it. "Shields up at 75% but we have damaged areas in the field from feedback," the Vulcan reported even as Hank grabbed the PADD and ran back over to the large display. "Moving repair teams where I can to cover those areas," Hank said then looked over to a Bolian officer who glanced to him expectantly. "I want the two teams closest to us to report in and be prepared to grab parts and run them down to where they are needed," the ACEO said with a frown even as the man nodded and turn back around to make it happen. =/\= "Bridge to Engineering, what's the status of the phase cloaking device? Can we engage with all this radiation and whatever else is around?", =/\= he said, exploring all his options. Blinking Hank thought about it for a moment before tapping his combadge. =/\= "Sir, I'm not quite up to speed yet on the cloaking device however I would imagine that it would be acceptable as long as nothing in there is generating anyon particles. If there is a build up of those in any of these areas then there is a chance they'd bring us back into phase quickly which could be somewhat unpleasant depending upon what we are going through at the time but if we go through things I believe we generate chronitons as we disrupts subatomic particles," =/\= Hank said before pausing and considering things quickly. =/\= "While we'd still have some if not all of the protection it would also have a greater risk of detection depending upon the sensors we're hiding from, sir," =/\= Hank reported with a shrug. "Warp core going up in power," called out someone as a dim light flashed from the core and Hank frowned over to the unit. "Er… still working on that… mix ratios are going up," the crewman reported. "Repair teams are headed to meet with damage control in four of the five areas, but at least one team on fields reports that they'll need to make repairs outside," said the Bolian and Hank nodded. "Have them do what they can inside for the moment," Hank stated with a frown as he looked back up at the board then cycled through the systems menu to call up a smaller window on part of the display. "Computer, from scans done on the current area begin simulations of probable outcomes if the phase cloak is used and check what knowledge we have on the vessels in the area regarding sensor systems and their capability to scan and trace chronitons," Hank stated as he watched the display. (reply any ) (Posted by Mark) <> (USS Spectre, Bridge, CSO, Ensign Jon Walker - 14.00) Jon walked onto the bridge just as the battle had died off. He had dropped the data he had collected from the Nageri ship in Science Lab 1 and had left it for Ensign Tyrell to analyze. "Ensign Walker, any sign of the Romulans?", asked the Captain, not expecting the sensors to be worked well without main power. but wherever they are, they were covering the Spectre's back. Jon quickly went over his console, " Sir sensors are at 52%, but I am picking up a plasma trail 2000 km off our port bow, it matches the Romulan vessels." "Very well, thank you, L'Tal, see if you can get us deeper into the system, we have to start looking for more Xenolithe, wherever the Romulans are, I am sure they'll keep an eye on us.", said the Captain. (USS Spectre, Bridge, CSO, Ensign Jon Walker - 14.40) Jon was just finishing the last touches in getting the sensors up to 75% when Lt.Orde handed him a phasor set to kill. (Reply Orde) After being explained to as why he a Science Officer needed a phasor, Jon reluctently put the phasor in the holster provided. The Spectre had just came upon a planet one that could possibly provide information as to the base of operations of the Xenolithe they hoped. "Ensign Walker, what can you tell me about the planet?", the Captain said, sitting as his seat once more. Walker turned to the Captain. "The planet in question is a Class N planet, essentially a water planet, 12,000 km in diameter, oxygen and nitrogen atmosphere. There is one large continent on the surface, 6600 sq.km in area, as well as various island chains throughout the planets oceans. There seems to be a settlement on the main continent, low tech from the sensor readings." "I see.", said the CO as he turned to the CONN Officer, "L'Tal, take a shuttle and perform a low level scan of this planet, quick pass and see if the sensors can detect anything, make sure the shuttle sends it data directly to the CSO so we can monitor, we'll have to do this on each planet we come across, so lets get it right!", the Bajoran Captain said. (Reply from All) (Posted by J.Meidl) (USS Spectre, Bridge, CO, Captain Remae - 15.00) "Sensors are tracking something on the planet's watery surface, Captain.", said an officer on the Bridge. Remae looked at his computer display and noted the small reading. "Interesting. it's not too far from Lt L'Tal, have him swing past and have a look at what's going on in that area.", said Remae keeping his eyes peeled on the main viewscreen as the Spectre orbited the Class N planet.
