Admiral," Engtamn said a little nervously, "I have work to do in my laboratory. You are...ummm... welcome to join me." Gr'iann looked at the Grazerite. He always seemed a bit skittish. It must be a racial trait. Gr'iann vowed that he'd look up some information on his species. Perhaps there was something he could do to help him feel a little more comfortable. Perhaps he just needed a friend, someone he could trust. Gr'iann thought about how great it would be if he became that friend. They could spend all of their free time together. That might make Engtamn feel more at ease. Armed with that thought Gr'iann smiled a big toothy smile. "Why doctorr, I'd love to see you in yourr lab. I can mmake surre that we'rre not disturrbed while you finish whateverr it is you arre worrking on, and then you and I can get down to business." "Ummm... well... it will be a lot of technical work, mostly power relays and things like that. I know you are a doctor of medicine, but do you know circuitry as well?" asked Engtamn very much hoping that the Admiral did not. "At mmy age," Gr'iann winked, his tail flicked in the air, "I found that I have had mmany experriences. I think I can worrk mmy way arround somme cirrcuitrry. You mmay have to show mme somme of what you need, but you'd be surrprised how handy these things can be." He showed Engtamn his paw and a single claw came out. Gr'iann smiled and retracted the claw almost immediately. He was a little embarrassed. he was so excited at the prospect of being friends with Engtamn that he lost sight of his social graces. ~Showing my claws in public, I must be 5 years old.~ Engtamn looked at the claw, looked at the admiral and half closed his eyes... and swallowed hard before starting towards the turbolift. (Posted by Al Muir) (Starbase Geneva-Science Lab-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1025) Upon arriving in the science lab, she immediately saw Dr. Engtamn-Jensi and Admiral Gr'iann working together on the project. It intrigued her how they were able to work together so well. "Sorry to interrupt gentlemen....just thought you might like some insight on what I've found. I thought maybe it would help you guys better adapt this....microprobe." Looking over Dr. Engtamn-Jensi's shoulder for a moment, she saw that what he was working on was very complex. <> Taking a seat, she put her PADD on the table and said, "Here's what I've got ....." (Reply: EJ, Gr'iann, any) (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva-Science Lab-CSO, Ensign {SG} Doctor Engtamn-Jensi -1028) Engtamn walked into his personal lab and began deactivating the security programmes with the Admiral in tow. "Please sir, you might want to keep a little bit behind me for a few seconds," stated Engtamn quietly. (Reply Gri'ann) "Computer, authorization Engtamn-Jensi alpha five epsilon nine please," stated Engtamn clearly and distinctly. [Code and voice print match proceed.] "Thank you computer," stated Engtamn as he walked through the door to the retina scanning equipment in the small walkway to the lab. He looked directly at the scanning camera and waited. [Retina scan confirmed, welcome Doctor Entamn-Jensi.] intoned the computer as the doors slid open and the lab began to illuminate. Engtamn walked past his matter/anti-matter reactor, and his other scientific equipment to a workbench and picked up a few small items. He hadn't been planning on working on microprobes, but it was much like making a ship in a bottle. He knew that Engineering would require one working model and replicating something with parts so small was always problematic. Behind him he could feel Gri'ann boring holes into his back by staring at him. He wondered at this moment if he might not be the good Admiral's future lunch. Thankfully, he heard Doctor Mackenzie contact them and ask to come down, and the Admiral answer in the affirmative. ~It might have been good for him to ask me first, as I'm sure she doesn't have clearance... oh well, I'll deal with it.~ A few minutes later, he heard the door to the antechamber of his lab slide open. Engtamn called out, "Computer, recognize Lieutenant Commander Doctor Kaitlyn Mackenzie, temporary clearance, authorization Engtamn-Jensi." [Recognized and logged.] intoned the computer. Engtamn could now feel the other doctor watching his work closely. "Sorry to interrupt gentlemen....just thought you might like some insight on what I've found. I thought maybe it would help you guys better adapt his....microprobe," stated Mackenzie. Engtamn swung around and smiled slightly. "I would appreciate any insights you can give us," said Engtamn softly, "It is good to have as much information as possible." (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Science Lab- CMO - Admiral Gr'iann -1033) Gr'iann had watched over Engtamn's shoulder as he worked. It was quite fascinating. The scientist worked quickly and his hand movements were very graceful. Gr'iann watched him intently until he realized how much he hated to have someone do that to him. Although, as the head of Starfleet medical, he always had someone looking over his shoulder, whether it was to watch or to learn. Engtamn had given him a couple of tasks to do while he completed what he was doing. But the Admiral was getting a little anxious to get on with the task at hand, of finding out about these aliens. His task was interrupted. =^=Doctor Mackenzie to Admiral Gr'iann,=^= she said in tapping her commbadge. =^=I wondered if you might have a minute. Could I meet up with you and Dr. Entagmn-Jensi for awhile?=^= Gr'iann smiled at the sound of Kaitlyn's voice. It made his heart beat a little faster. He didn't volunteer to work with her in the hopes that a little distance would make the pangs of his desire a little less. He was, at best, able to be distracted from them. Now, he couldn't wait to see her again. "Kai... Dr. Mmackenzie," he calmed himself down, already beginning to groom himself, "it would be ourr pleasurre to mmeet up with you. We arre in Dr. Engtammn's lab rright now. Why don't you join us herre?" =^=Ok, Mackenzie out.=^= Gr'iann began to him as he waited for the woman he felt so strongly for to join himself and his new best friend. (posted by Al Muir) (Starbase Geneva-Science Lab-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1034) "Sorry to interrupt gentlemen....just thought you might like some insight on what I've found. I thought maybe it would help you guys better adapt this....microprobe," stated Mackenzie. Engtamn swung around and smiled slightly. "I would appreciate any insights you can give us," said Engtamn softly, "It is good to have as much information as possible." Pulling a chair up beside the two, Kaitlyn could feel Admiral Gr'iann's stare on her. She felt as if she were being watched. ~Thank god there's someone else here too.~ Scrolling through her PADD, she started to tell them about the facts that she found. "Ok...from what I can tell so far, there were two voices in the transmission. One belongs to a human form and the other doesn't. In fact, when I compared skeletal structures the second didn't even match any in the Federation database, so it's of an unknown origin but definitely not human like." <> Mackenzie was focused on what Dr. Engtamn-Jensi was now doing. It was neat watching him work with small circuitry. She had been a doctor and never seen neat mechanical devices engineers worked on until they became popular enough that it was everyday technology. "Oh...well, I'm afraid the rest won't do too much good. It's only more or less about their physical being as far as hair color goes. But with you working on this, I just wasn't sure if you needed to make this thing adaptable to different biological forms." <> Kaitlyn was slowly beginning to feel hot as she was getting a little uneasy at the obviousness, to her anyways, of Gr'iann's stare. Feeling the need to get out, she stood up and said, "Well, sorry to bother you gentlemen for only a short while. I just thought that some of the information might help you out a bit more." She noted the confused look on Dr. Engtamn-Jensi's face. ~Maybe he's wondering why I'm leaving so soon.~ <> "Sure, I'll let you know if there's anything else I can come up with. In the meantime, I'll be around digging up more information." Coming upon the doors, she stepped out into the hallway. Seeing no one around, she let out the breath she had been holding. ~That was just too strange.~ She started to get the feeling of a stalked person. ~That's ridiculous....we're professionals, doing a job.~ Not being able to shake the feeling just yet, she started walking down the hall. ~Maybe it's the stress....~ (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva-Science Lab-CSO Ensign {SG} Doctor Engtamn-Jensi -1038) "Sorry to interrupt gentlemen....just thought you might like some insight on what I've found. I thought maybe it would help you guys better adapt this....microprobe," stated Mackenzie. Engtamn swung around and smiled slightly. "I would appreciate any insights you can give us," said Engtamn softly, "It is good to have as much information as possible." Engtamn sensed that Doctor Mackenzie seemed ill at ease. He sincerely hoped that he was not the source of his distress. Perhaps she was worried that the Admiral would try to eat her too. It did seem a probability as humans were omnivorous and therefore subject to the whims of carnivorous species. Yes, that had to be it, it wasn't him at all, Doctor Mackenzie must be concerned about Admiral Gr'iann's desire to eat her, a sensible woman it seemed after all. "Ok...from what I can tell so far, there were two voices in the transmission. One belongs to a human form and the other doesn't. In fact, when I compared skeletal structures the second didn't even match any in the Federation database, so it's of an unknown origin but definitely not human like." "I will work on programming skeletal structures into our probes. That way we will know which subject we are scanning. If there are two races, we must be sure that we keep them separate," stated Engtamn benignly. With that he began to make fine adjustments on the microprobe. This would require a slight change to the power variables to make it work. (Reply Gr'iann iyw) Doctor Mackenzie seemed somewhat fascinated with what Engtamn was working on. He attempted to give her a slightly better view by shifting to one side. "Oh...well, I'm afraid the rest won't do too much good. It's only more or less about their physical being as far as hair color goes. But with you working on this, I just wasn't sure if you needed to make this thing adaptable to different biological forms." Engtamn nodded and looked at Mackenzie with his large, liquid brown eyes. "Yes, that is important. The probe must be slightly more complex to be able to work. I appreciate your thoroughness," said Engtamn with a gentle smile. (Reply Gr'iann iyw) With that, Doctor Mackenzie stood up and said, "Well, sorry to bother you gentlemen for only a short while. I just thought that some of the information might help you out a bit more." Engtamn knew he must look slightly concerned at this stage... he did not really want to be left alone with the big cat man. He could understand Doctor Mackenzie's desire, however, not to be eaten and he nodded. "I appreciate your help Doctor Mackenzie. I have one other thing for you to check for me, if its convenient. Can you please see if its possible for these two separate species to have mixed offspring? This could also change the variables and will require more in-depth programming," said Engtamn with another smile and a sad look at the prospect of her leaving. As long as she was around, the chance of the Admiral making a snack out of him was diminished, there was strength in numbers after all. (Reply Gr'iann iyw) "Sure, I'll let you know if there's anything else I can come up with. In the meantime, I'll be around digging up more information," said Mackenzie as she left the room. As she left, Engtamn sighed softly and continued working on the probe. He fully expected the Admiral to be upon him at any instant, snacking upon him. He was glad, however, that Doctor Mackenzie had escaped from being devoured, she seemed very nice. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva- Science Lab- CMO -Admiral Gr'iann- 1040) Kaitlyn stepped through the door and Gr'iann couldn't help but let out a sigh. She was so lovely. His thoughts turned to mating, and he wondered when he might get her alone again. "Sorry to interrupt gentlemen....just thought you might like some insight on what I've found. I thought maybe it would help you guys better adapt this....microprobe." Looking over Dr. Engtamn-Jensi's shoulder for a moment, she saw that what he was working on was very complex. "No prroblemm, Kaitlyn," he purred. "You can interrupt anytimme." Engtamn swung around and smiled slightly. "I would appreciate any insights you can give us," said Engtamn softly, "It is good to have as much information as possible." Gr'iann's sharp eyes watched every move that his fellow doctor made. He was fascinated by the movement of her body. Oddly, he was getting the sensation of tension in the air. Perhaps she too was concerned by the presence of the ACSO. Maybe she wished that they were alone right now. But she was a professional, and did her job. Grozzit how he wanted her more. "Ok...from what I can tell so far, there were two voices in the transmission. One belongs to a human form and the other doesn't. In fact, when I compared skeletal structures the second didn't even match any in the Federation database, so it's of an unknown origin but definitely not human like." "I will work on programming skeletal structures into our probes," Entaman said. "That way we will know which subject we are scanning. If there are two races, we must be sure that we keep them separate." Engtamn turned his attention to making adjustments to the microprobe. Gr'iann watched Mackenzie's face as she watched him work with small circuitry. Even the fascination that she had with the technology she was seeing was exciting to the Caitian. He shook his head. ~What is wrong with me?~ "Oh...well," Kaitlyn said, "I'm afraid the rest won't do too much good. It's only more or less about their physical being as far as hair color goes. But with you working on this, I just wasn't sure if you needed to make this thing adaptable to different biological forms." "Everything you have will prrove to be immporrrtant I'mm surre," Gr'iann tried to be supportive. He moved a little closer and put a reassuring paw on her shoulder. "Well, sorry to bother you gentlemen for only a short while. I just thought that some of the information might help you out a bit more." "I appreciate your help Doctor Mackenzie," Engtamn told her. "I have one other thing for you to check for me, if its convenient. Can you please see if its possible for these two separate species to have mixed offspring? This could also change the variables and will require more in-depth programming." Gr'iann couldn't help but feel the disappointment of her leaving. "To find that out we would mmost likely need a bio-specimen. If they arre of a simmilar enough species, I can only immagine that crross-prrocrreation would be possible. I amm sorrrry you have to leave, but if you need anything else." "Sure, I'll let you know if there's anything else I can come up with. In the meantime, I'll be around digging up more information." And she was gone. Gr'iann could feel his heart sink. "Excuse mme forr a mmomment, Doctorr." Gr'iann stepped out into the hallway. He saw Mackenzie heading down the hall. "Doctorr Mmackenzie," he called out. "Kaitlyn, a second please." When he caught up to her, he suddenly found himself at a loss of what to say. "I was wonderring... that is, I hoped..., well if you werre frree laterr. Perrhaps we could have dinnerr orr something?" He felt like such a kitten. (posted by Al Muir) (Starbase Geneva-Science Lab-CSO Ensign {SG} Doctor Engtamn-Jensi -1042) Engtamn watched as the Caitian exited his lab after Doctor Mackenzie. He seemed flustered and upset. This immediately raised concern in Engtamn's mind. ~Oh NO! He doesn't want her to leave! He wants to eat her! He's going after her because he knows she's trying to escape! What do I do?!" thought Engtamn, slowly starting to panic. He'd seen the strange way Gr'iann had looked at Mackenzie. It had to be that! It just had to be! The predator was planning on making his move. Engtamn had no weapons in his lab, and wouldn't use them even if he did, but the Admiral needed to be subdued before he ate poor, defenseless Doctor Mackenzie. "Doctor Engtamn-Jensi to Lieutenant Casely, help me please!" yelled Engtamn after tapping his comm badge. =^=What can I do for you Doctor?=^= asked Paul from Ops. "Its the Admiral! Help me please!" said Engtamn, he was already starting to feel faint. =^=The Admiral? Is he ok? Do you need medical or security?=^=stated Paul, with a degree of panic rising in his voice. "He's fine! But he's after Doctor Mackenzie!!! Do something," said Engtamn with panic. =^=Ummm... Doctor, who he's after is a rather personal thing. We really shouldn't get involved in that,=^= Paul said, the relief perceptible in his voice. "SHOULDN'T GET INVOLVED?! What are you talking about?! He's after her," said Engtamn, his voice beginning to rise. =^=Yes, he's been interested in her for some time, but that's really not something for us to be talking about on an open comm channel. Please keep things professional and don't use the comm channel for personal discussions,=^= said Paul, starting to feel slightly annoyed. After all, Doctor Mackenzie hadn't lodged any complaints about his advances and it didn't seem to be interfering with either of their duties. Then, he closed the comm channel. ~What am I going to do? What am I going to do? He's going to eat her and no one cares! Oh no!~ thought Engtamn as he ran out of the of laboratory. He saw the predator in the hallway, advancing on Doctor Mackenzie. "ADMIRAL! If you must, eat me! But leave her alone!" Engtamn yelled down the corridor. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Corridor-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1044) As Kaitlyn walked down the corridor, she thanked her lucky stars she was out of that science lab. She didn't think she could handle those weird stares from Admiral Gr'iann anymore. Pretty soon if they didn't stop, she would have to put a stop to it herself. As if on cue, she was suddenly interrupted by none other than Admiral Gr'iann himself. "Kaitlyn, a second please." ~Great...~ Turning to face him, she said, "Sure, what's up?" "I was wonderring... that is, I hoped..., well if you werre frree laterr. Perrhaps we could have dinnerr orr something?" Feeling trapped, she wasn't exactly sure how to respond. "Well, hush...." She hadn't even begun to finish her sentence when Dr. Engtamn-Jensi burst through the lab doors and bolted towards her screaming. "ADMIRAL! If you must, eat me! But leave her alone!" Engtamn yelled down the corridor. Stepping back from Admiral Gr'iann, she looked at the Doctor yelling down the hallway, then back to the Admiral. "What's going on here?!" She asked as her eyes widened. She had no idea what to expect, or even where Dr. Engtamn-Jensi got the idea for that matter. <> ~Ok, things are getting very strange here....~ She listened as Dr. Engtamn-Jensi explained what he thought was going to happen and tried desperately to pull her away from Admiral Gr'iann. ~He needs some serious counselling!~ Interrupting their argument, Kaitlyn said, "Ok, ok, ok, enough!" She felt like a mother scolding her children almost. At her outburst, both men stopped arguing. "Now, I'm sure Doctor that your intentions are good, but I don't see any proof to back up your....uh.....theory." She then turned to Gr'iann. "And Admiral, I'm sure those weren't your intentions as well. Now, why don't we all take a deep breath, turn around, and get back to work huh?" <> Things just kept getting more weird by the moment. ~And I thought being on the Paladin was nuts!~ As both men gave each other their 'suspicious' glances, Kaitlyn cleared her throat. They both looked at her once more before turning back and heading to the lab. ~Wonder how they'll get along now....~ Continuing her walk down the hallway, she was glad no one else was around to see the argument. Nevertheless, it would still probably make station news soon. ~Is it just me? Maybe I'm the one who needs a counsellor,~ she thought walking towards the turbolift. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva- Science Lab- CMO -Admiral Gr'iann- 1045) "Kaitlyn, a second please." Kaitlyn turned and smiled, Gr'iann smiled back. "Sure, what's up?" "I was wonderring... that is, I hoped..., well if you werre frree laterr. Perrhaps we could have dinnerr orr something?" ~What a cub.~ He tried not to show his self recrimination. "Well, uhh...." She stammered. Gr'iann wondered if she were as nervous as he was. She opened her mouth to, what he felt certain, accept his invitation when a commotion burst out behind him. It was Dr. Engtam-Jensi. "ADMIRAL! If you must, eat me! But leave her alone!" Engtamn yelled down the corridor. ~What the ...~ Kaitlyn stepped back, her eyes wide with concern, "What's going on here?!" "I have no idea," Gr'iann replied. "Doctorr Engtamn, what arre you..." But the Grazerite did not give him a chance to finish. He managed to wedge himself between the two of them and dramatically threw his arms open wide, as if in self sacrifice. He repeated his request to be taken rather than Kaitlyn, and Gr'iann could not find words to speak. "Doctorr," he tried to be reassuring, although he was quite annoyed by the interruption, "I assurre you, I amm not planning to consumme Doctorr Mmackenzie." Engtamn continued his protestations, not really listening to what Gr'iann had to say. Finally the Caitian became a little more forceful. "Look, I amm not going to harrmm Doctorrr Mmmmackenzie." A little snarl escaped his lips. "Ok, ok, ok, enough!" Kaitlyn's voice silenced the both of them. "Now, I'm sure Doctor that your intentions are good, but I don't see any proof to back up your....uh.....theory." She then turned to Gr'iann. "And Admiral, I'm sure those weren't your intentions as well. Now, why don't we all take a deep breath, turn around, and get back to work huh?" "Yes but...," her look kept Gr'iann from saying anything else, as she walked away from them. Gr'iann couldn't help but give her an appreciative glance, as she moved away. He turned to Engtamn. "Well, she cerrtainly has a commanding way about herr." As they turned to go back into the lab Gr'iann looked at the ACSO and asked, "What could possibly have mmade you think I was going to eat herr?" (posted by Al Muir) (Starbase Geneva, Library, Counselor Ensign (JG) Brian Rogers, 1047) Brian listened to Kass talk. "Do you think that they were trying to tell us that the planet appearing as it did now has done so more than once?, but, then again thinking over the clues as they are could mean also that they are sending out an emergency transmission. They are trying have tried before to safely escape the planet due to health reasons before the planet does another disappearing act. What do you two think?" She asked. Brian thought deeply for a second. "Well, it could be possible. I don't think Casely or any other Ops person said anything about any sort of sensor results that would show an emergency." Brian said. (reply Marta or Klars) Brian nodded and nodded to the private small research stations around the library. "Why don't we all go back and research on our own?" Brian asked. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Starbase Geneva-Science Lab-CSO Ensign {SG} Doctor Engtamn-Jensi -1050) Engtamn listened as everything blew up in his face. He had tried to do the right thing and now Mackenzie seemed angry with him. Didn't she realise the danger she was in? He looked sadly as she walked away, and then noticed the predator starting at him. Gr'iann turned to Engtamn. "Well, she cerrtainly has a commanding way about herr." Engtamn couldn't help but agree. As they turned to go back into the lab Gr'iann looked at the ACSO and asked, "What could possibly have mmade you think I was going to eat herr?" Engtamn looked at the Admiral and shook his head and softly intoned, "Its ok. I do understand that you are what you are. No one blames a predator for sating his hunger. I saw the way you looked at her. It was how the predator hyrals on my home world that used to use us for sustenance used to look at us. No doubt, it is what unnerved her as well. Not all beings understand that a need to fulfill a proper role is not an inherent evil as we do though, I suppose." (Reply Gr'iann) "You resemble the hyral very much. I would not be surprised if it wasn't a distant relative. They killed many of my kind before we dealt with them," said Engtamn gently. (Reply Gr'iann) "OH NO! There was no call to do them harm. They did not mean to hurt us, they were simply fulfilling their natural role. You do not blame a predator for desiring to eat prey, it is the way things are. My species abhors violence. We found a spot on an M-Class planet close by ours and set it up as a nature preserve for them. We transported the there and left them to live in peace. They have a right to existence, as all things do. That is why I understand your need to eat me, it is the natural order of things. Just please try not to make too much of a mess and be sure to send a note to my mother explaining what happened. I'm sure she'll understand, but its always worse on parents if they don't know," said Engtamn softly with a tinge of sadness in his voice. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva - Observation Lounge - Counselor Ensign Kassia Marta - 1051) Kass watched as the two men thought about what she had presented to them. She was glad that she was able to take their minds off each other and back onto the mission at hand. Then Brian broke the silence when he responded to her. "Well, it could be possible. I don't think Casely or any other Ops person said anything about any sort of sensor results that would show an emergency." Brian said. "You are right, but, our mission was to uncover as much as we could about the message they sent not what sensor readings were. I do believe that the more that we investigate and tie our findings with the other teams findings, we will come to understand what they were actually wanting." Kass replied to him. She had always learned that to be a good linguistic counselor you had to research as much as you could about any given subject at hand. (reply Klars) Brian had listened to her then nodded in the direction of the private small research stations around the library. "Why don't we all go back and research on our own?" Brian asked. "I guess we can, but, I suggest that we meet back up to discuss what we find before the meeting." Kass had not liked the suggestion as she had thought it really better to work as a team not as individuals. She also knew that Brian was determined to go on his own, which, could hurt the team in the long run. She was determined to try and have Klars and her do as much as they could in getting the message deciphered before the meeting. What the command decided could very well hinge on what they find. "So, Klars, lets see what we can find to finish the message." Kass said to him as she watched Brian walk over to a machine a bit from them. "Also, let him do what he can, it seems that he might work better alone and that is ok for now." (Posted by Frank Rogers) (Starbase Geneva- Science Lab- CMO -Admiral Gr'iann- 1052) "Its ok," Engtamn was quite non-judgemental. "I do understand that you are what you are. No one blames a predator for sating his hunger. I saw the way you looked at her. It was how the predator hyrals on my home world that used to use us for sustenance used to look at us. No doubt, it is what unnerved her as well. Not all beings understand that a need to fulfill a proper role is not an inherent evil as we do though, I suppose." Gr'iann looked at the Grazerite CSO, uncertain as if he was certain what he was hearing. "Hyrals? You think I'mm like yourr hyrrals?" "You resemble the hyral very much. I would not be surprised if it wasn't a distant relative. They killed many of my kind before we dealt with them," said Engtamn gently. "Dealt with them?" Gr'iann asked. "How did your people "deal with them." Did you rrid yourrselves of themm?" "OH NO! At that Gr'iann could not help himself. He burst into laughter. "I prrommise you this, Doctorr Engtammmn, I will not mmake a mmess with orr anyone else. Mmy people are no longerr predatorrs. We haven't been forr overr a thousand yearrs. If you check, mmy oath of pacifism is on file. We Caitians, also, do not like violence. That's why I becamme a physician." As they enterred the office, he could almost feel as if the CSO relaxed a little. However, now he was on edge. Kaitlyn had not answered his question. He would have to seek her out again later. But now it was time to get down to business. "So what do you rrecommend we do firrst?" (posted by Al Muir) (Starbase Geneva-Science Lab-CSO Ensign {SG} Doctor Engtamn-Jensi -1055) Engtamn listened to the reply by the admiral both about his lack of desire to snack on him and his oath of pacifism. It seemed that the two were very alike after all. If Engtamn could get beyond his resemblance to the hyrals, perhaps they could be friends. The resemblance however, was uncanny. "So what do you rrecommend we do firrst?" asked the Admiral. Engtamn nodded. "We must expand the memory of the microprobe without damaging the sensor systems, then we must programme it with what to look for in biological samples. What are the most necessary functions of a being for you to scan in order to tell what race they are?" asked Engtamn softly. He was feeling a little embarrassed about his earlier assertion about the Admiral. How could he have made such a mistake? (Reply Gr'iann) "I understand. Incidentally, I am sorry Admiral for embarrassing you or for acting in an improper manner. I did not understand your motivations towards Doctor Mackenzie. In fact, honestly, I still don't. You did look most predatorial when you were dealing with her. I honestly do believe that is why she seems uncomfortable with you," said Engtamn in his gentle tone. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Corridor-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1112) Kaitlyn was just going back to the medical center after having met with Dr. Entagmn- Jensi and Admiral Gr'iann to compare findings. Before she left, she had glanced at the chronometer which read 11:10. Their lunch meeting would be soon. She was in thought as she stepped into the turbolift. "Medical center, deck 16." The computer beeped in response. Just as it did so, her commbadge chirped. =^=Lieutenant Casely to Doctor Mackenzie, could you please head down to Main Engineering and check up on Ensign McLaren? It sounds like someone fell or something and his voice sounded... strange. I can't afford to have any of the senior staff injured or out of commission at the moment,=^= asked Paul. Replying, she said, =^=Aye sir, I'll head down there now.=^= =^=Thank you doctor. Please report to me as soon as you know anything,=^= he said, then closed the commlink. She then realized where the turbolift was heading, and said, "Computer, main engineering." Stopping for a moment to correct the heading, it then started back up in the direction of engineering. (Posted by Stacey) (Starbase Geneva, Headquarters, Humans for Humanity Station Leader, Dean Benford, 1114) Dean shook his head. He'd been pouring over the code since he received it. He knew his people were doing the same thing, but it seemed to make now sense. At first he thought it was old Morse code, but that kept translating to "H" space "H", which made no sense at all. Dean listened again... =^=Dot Dot Dot Dot Dash Dash Dash Dash Dot Dot Dot Dot=^= He shook his head... and then got an idea. "Computer, what are the chances that there is an echo in this transmission?" [Chances are 97.4 per cent.] stated the computer. Dean slapped his forehead. OF COURSE! There had been a subspace echo. When dealing with something that isn't verbal, a subspace echo would be impossible to hear to the naked ear. The message was being distorted. Now he could account for the echo and get the real message. "Computer, eliminate the effects of the subspace echo," stated Benford. [Working... Completed.] "Computer play the modified signal," stated Benford. =^=Dot Dot Dot Dash Dash Dash Dot Dot Dot=^= Now that made more sense... especially if it was old Morse. " Computer, translate from Morse," stated Benford. [SOS... original Morse code for Save Our Souls, a uniformly understood Earth distress signal.] Benford began to nod. Not only did there seem to be Earth humans, they appeared to be in trouble. Dean knew he would have to step up the attack team's progress. He would ensure that the alien scum subjugating the humans on that planet would pay. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Main Engineering-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1115) Upon entering engineering, she felt odd. This wasn't her area of expertise let alone being down there with a full engineering staff instead of medical staff. She walked around for a moment, hoping to see Ensign McLaren standing around working. To her dismay, she couldn't even find him. So after asking a few people where they thought he was, she finally checked his office, only to see him sitting slumped over in his chair half out of it. Immediately tapping her commbadge, she said, =^=Dr. Mackenzie to medical bay, immediate transport for Ensign McLaren and myself!=^= She then felt the shimmer of the transporter locking on to her and beaming her away. (Posted by Stacey) (Starbase Geneva-Medical Center-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1118) Upon arriving in the medical bay, several people helped Kaitlyn get McLaren onto a biobed. Quickly scanning him with a tricorder, she wasn't exactly sure what she was seeing. The tricorder seemed to be picking up signs of a possible aneurysm, but something about the readings was just off. Putting the tricorder away, she pressed a button at the side panel, and watched as the sides of the bed came up and around the Ensign's body. Those scans were usually better and could penetrate through to get more accurate readings anyhow. Kaitlyn watched as the readings played out. His body temperature remained the same, but his blood pressure was decreasing. ~What in the hell?~ Her eyes narrowed and her brows furrowed as she tried to distinguish just what she was seeing in his blood. His blood chemistry looked different. Though she wasn't sure why at the time, she didn't much care. She had to get him stabilized first. She also noticed his eyes. They looked as if they were bulging and a strange liquid was oozing out. She quickly administered a hypo spray to help his blood chemistry return to normal, though she wasn't sure why it was that way to begin with. After that, she administered another different medication that would sedate him so she could perform the operation to remove the aneurysm she found in his brain. ~Too young for this stuff.~ Going off to scrub, she came back and prepared McLaren for surgery. (Posted by Stacy) (Starbase Geneva-Medical Center-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1206) Pulling her mask back, she let out an exasperated sign. ~Thank goodness I'm done.~ The aneurysm had been in one of the hardest parts of his brain to work through. The surgery had been a success though, and McLaren would recover. Kaitlyn just couldn't figure out why a young Ensign would have had an aneurysm. Not only that, but the medication she administered for the blood chemistry seemed to be working. It was a neutral substance designed to counteract anomalies like that. However, McLaren's eyes would need rest. She had cleaned them up and put patches over them. With the protective measures taken, he would be back to normal soon. Cleaning up, she came back through the room making sure McLaren was doing okay. She then looked up at the chronometer. ~The meeting!~ She had forgotten all about the meeting, not that she didn't have an excuse though. Seeing as how the Ensign was doing okay, she asked one of the nurses to keep watch over him as she grabbed her PADD and bolted for the door. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva, Main Operations, 2O/TAC/SC, Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely, 1213) Paul paced anxiously on deck. He still hadn't heard from Lieutenant Commander Mackenzie, and he had told her to report to him as soon as she found out if anything had happened. She could be injured herself at this point. What if there was an attacker in main engineering? He should have sent a security team down with her, but there was nothing about his conversation with McLaren that led him to believe he was attacked. Still though... "Casely to security, please send a team down to Main Engineering immediately. I sent Doctor Mackenzie down to look in on Ensign McLaren, with the strict orders to check in when she found something, its been over an hour and she still hasn't checked in," he stated, his voice full of concern, "Carry only type one phasers with stun settings on them. Keep the team relatively small, nothing larger than 4 members. I don't want rumours or panic, make it seem as routine as possible." (Reply Klars, any) Paul did notice in the meantime that someone in Engineering had carried out his orders at any rate and the power was now boosted to sensors and he was ready to send the gamma pulse. From where he was there was little he could do but wait. He hoped that the team returned with some findings on Doctor Mackenzie and Ensign McLaren soon. If there was an attacker, it had to be dealt with... if it was a Doctor not following orders that would have to be dealt with too as they had wasted security's time and resources due to simply not reporting in, a standard protocol. While he waited, Paul fired the pulse at the planet, he knew that the shields would only be disrupted for microseconds, but it should be enough with the boosted sensor array. Suddenly, information began to stream back to the station about the planet. Still Casely waited for some news about McLaren and Mackenzie... (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Medical Center-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1214) Arriving back at the medical center, Kaitlyn realized she forgot something vital to the meeting. As she went back into her office, she sighed. It had been a long day already. She still had to contact Lt. Casely about McLaren, which she hadn't forgotten about, but the aneurysm could've been fatal if not treated right away. Tapping her commbadge, she said, =^=Dr. Mackenzie to Lt. Casely. Sir, sorry for not contacting you sooner, but I had an emergency situation.=^= <> =^=Yes sir. I found Ensign McLaren in his office and had an emergency transport. He had a brain aneurysm that could've been fatal and he needed surgery right away.=^= <> =^=He's doing ok for now, I've sedated him in order to keep his brain functions protected and let him rest. He will come around in a couple of hours.=^= <> =^=Yes sir, I understand. Mackenzie out.=^= Closing communications, she was glad that Casely understood why she had not contacted him sooner, though she knew she should've. However, under the circumstances, she thought it might be nice if the Ensign survived first. She remembered how it used to be when people did the same thing to her when she was in command, and she hated it. She tried not to do the same, such as nagging others for their physical, but it just had to be done. Checking on the Ensign once more, she left in order to catch up to the meeting. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva, Main Operations, 2O/TAC/SC, Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely, 1221) Paul had just heard from his security team. It seemed that the doctor had arrived and beamed McLaren straight out. Obviously, whatever happened had to be dealt with immediately. He would have preferred she would have contacted him either enroute or while she was working, but understood the urgency. It was difficult at times to juggle everything, and it had appropriated a security team somewhere that may have been needed elsewhere. Finally, the call came in... =^=Dr. Mackenzie to Lt. Casely. Sir, sorry for not contacting you sooner, but I had an emergency situation.=^= "I understand. In the future, if you can find a nurse or someone else to report in immediately it would be good. Perhaps you could place that as a protocol. If you're too busy, another medical worker immediately calls in," suggested Paul. He didn't want to give the medical staff, or anyone else, a hard time but he did have to see to everyone's safety. =^=Yes sir. I found Ensign McLaren in his office and had an emergency transport. He had a brain aneurysm that could've been fatal and he needed surgery right away.=^= Paul nodded, "Understood. How is McLaren?" =^=He's doing ok for now, I've sedated him in order to keep his brain functions protected and let him rest. He will come around in a couple of hours.=^= "Good work Doctor. Thank you for the update, carry on. I'll see you at the meeting at 1300," said Paul. =^=Yes sir, I understand. Mackenzie out.=^= ~Wonderful, one engineer down at a time we need them the most,~ thought Paul. He continued assembling data for the meeting. It would be good if the other assistant Engineering chief, De'Charin, would radio in. He'd tried to contact him a few times to no avail. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva, Library, Counselor Ensign (JG) Brian Rogers, 1249) Later after a few hours of research, Brian noticed he had ten minutes before their lunch to report what happened. He walked over to Marta and Klars to see what they had gotten on their research. "Hello, Ensigns. I didn't get much on my research. How did you fare?" Ensign (JG) Rogers asked. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Starbase Geneva, Deck 8 Officer's Lounge, 2O/TAC/SC, Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely, 1250) Paul walked off the turbolift and into the Officer's Lounge. He looked out as the galley crew laid out a small buffet for the senior staff. ~The way to a crew's staff is through their stomachs.~ thought Paul with a smile. It had taken some doing, but he had added dishes from every possible culture on the senior staff. The smells were interesting and made Paul's stomach rumble. Paul knew that Captain Arianna was busy with Starfleet Command, trying to apprise them of the situation. He hoped that she would be able to make the meeting, she knew when and where it was so he had elected not to bother her. Paul crossed the room and sat down on the right side of the head chair at the table. He would leave the Captain's chair at the head of the table empty in case she did arrive, but knew he would have to be prepared to head the meeting until she could get there. Paul reached forward and filled the cup at his place with coffee and took a sip. He knew that in a few moments the entire senior staff would start to flood in with their reports. He hoped they had better news than he did. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva, Library, Counselor Ensign Kassia Marta, 1251) "Hello, Ensigns. I didn't get much on my research. How did you fare?" Ensign (JG) Rogers asked. "Well there was not much more than what we already discussed and the what they meant by Taylor just lead to too many references to understand that one." She said in reply. Then her stomach grumbled reminding her she did not eat breakfast. "Well, I think we should head to the meeting as I am hungry." (posted by Frank) (Starbase Geneva-Officer's Lounge-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1252) Just walking into the officer's lounge, Kaitlyn immediately saw the first officer awaiting the rest of the crew. As she walked up to take a seat, she first put her PADD on the table and picked up her cup. ~I need this to a good coffee break while I'm at it.~ After having filled her cup with coffee, she took it back to her seat and sat down. A couple members of the crew were already there, but they were waiting on the rest. Taking the time to review her report, she sighed. She didn't have as much information as she wanted to give, but she had something at least. The factors in this mystery proved hard to work with this time. With little to go on medically, she was sure that the little design Dr. Engtamn-Jensi and Admiral Gr'iann were working on would give her much more information to supply the crew with when they got it working. ~Speaking of which.....~ Going off on another subject in her mind, she didn't forget to contact Dr. Engtamn-Jensi about the mating and heredity question, it just took her that long to figure part of it out before the meeting. She thought she may as well apprise him here. Taking a sip of her coffee, she sat back and awaited the arrival of the other members of the crew. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva, Deck 8 Officer's Lounge, 2O/TAC/SC, Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely, 1253) Paul was enjoying his coffee as he saw Doctor Mackenzie enter the room. She had made it to the meeting before any of the others, it was hardly surprising as most of the crew was busy with their tasks. She seemed deep in thought upon her entry. "Hello Doctor, you look to be deep in thought," stated Paul warmly. He hadn't had much time to talk to Doctor Mackenzie so far, except in official capacities. She had seemed to be the subject of several amorous advances by other crewmates, so he decided that he would attempt the 'fellow officer' and 'friendship' tact, as it must get tiring to be at the centre of so many romantic intrigues. (Reply Mackenzie) "It certainly has been a surreal morning. Hopefully we can start to put some of these mysteries to an end. On a brighter note, how are you settling back in to the station?" asked Paul. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Officer's Lounge-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1254) "Hello Doctor, you look to be deep in thought," stated Paul warmly. Looking up, and realizing he was talking to her, she said, "Oh yes...just trying to get everything straightened out before the meeting here." "It certainly has been a surreal morning. Hopefully we can start to put some of these mysteries to an end. On a brighter note, how are you settling back in to the station?" asked Paul. After having had taken her seat and taking a sip of her coffee, she said, "Pretty well. Actually, I kind of feel like I never left," she said smiling. She was glad that Casely was being friendly. In her time earlier, she'd known lots of people in high positions that were really rather like the harda**es of the century. <> "Well, I mean things do look somewhat different now than when I left, but it still feels like home to me." <> Taking another sip of her coffee, she was glad to have what felt like a normal conversation. Sitting back in her chair, she awaited the response from Casely. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva, Deck 8 Officer's Lounge, 2O/TAC/SC, Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely, 1255) Paul watched as Kaitlyn took a sip of her coffee before responding. "Pretty well. Actually, I kind of feel like I never left," Kaitlyn said with a smile. Paul chuckled imagining how he'd feel going back to the Nimitz. Faces changed with the last transport, it always happens during docking, he'd have to be replaced for example. However, he knew that if he went back, providing certain key people were still there, it would feel like home. "I can understand that, although there have to be some changes. Me for example," he said with a wink as he drank from his cup. "Well, I mean things do look somewhat different now than when I left, but it still feels like home to me," stated the ACMO before taking another drink of her coffee. Paul nodded, "I see what you mean. I'm still trying to adjust. Going from a ship to a station and when I received this promotion I was told that I would be a second officer. I fully expected there to be a First Officer on the station... but, nope. So here I am acting in that position too. I'm doing my best, but its a bit overwhelming at times. I'm glad we seem to have a good crew. Lets just say the appearance of a planet didn't exactly make my day." Paul laughed at the thought of his face when the planet first appeared on the sensors on his duty watch. (Posted by Jeff Bergeron) (Starbase Geneva-Officer's Lounge-ACMO Lt. Cmdr. Kaitlyn Mackenzie-1256) Kaitlyn listened as Paul indulged in how he felt when he was transferred. "I can understand that, although there have to be some changes. Me for example," he said with a wink as he drank from his cup. Smiling, Kaitlyn just chuckled. "Yeah, that's true. There have been some staff changes since I've been gone. Some people I've even served with other places." "I see what you mean. Lets just say the appearance of a planet didn't exactly make my day." Sighing, Kaitlyn agreed. "Trust me, I know exactly what you're feeling going through that right now, and it's tough, I've been there myself." She wanted to make sure that Paul knew he was appreciated for his attempts at first officer. It was a big position to fill, especially when you were the captain's every hand. She herself has been first officer aboard the Paladin, and that was the toughest post she'd ever had to fill. Every time she did one thing to try and make life better, all it seemed to do was make things worse. ~I should've just stood on a stage and let them throw veggies at me....~ She snorted at the thought, but she tried her hardest and just couldn't fit in the spot. Continuing, she said, "Just so you know, I think you're doing a great job. A heck of a lot better than me probably, but maybe the position just isn't cut out for some. But you, it fits you perfectly." <> She loved her career in medicine and knew she took a big risk in giving it up for the first officer position. That was why it was so much easier for her to accept being a second officer. That way she could still keep her medical post and be 2O all at the same time, though she didn't mind filling in when they needed an officer in charge. She took another sip of coffee as she listened to Casely's reply. (Posted by: Stacey) (Starbase Geneva, Deck 8 Officer's Lounge, 2O/TAC/SC, Lieutenant {JG} Paul Casely, 1258) Paul listened to Kaitlyn talk about her experiences. He could tell she did understand a bit of what he was going through and that made him relax a little bit. "Just so you know, I think you're doing a great job. A heck of a lot better than me probably, but maybe the position just isn't cut out for some. But you, it fits you perfectly," stated Mackenzie. Paul smiled, "Thank you. I don't take compliments particularly well, I should warn you. I do appreciate that though. Sometimes it doesn't feel like it fits real well, but acting with confidence seems to be one of the key components, even if you don't always feel it. Knowing regulations helps a bit I suppose, although sometimes they aren't overly helpful. There is no regulation, for example, for when a planet pops into orbit beside you out of nowhere." (Reply Mackenzie) "It's getting late, I hope some of the others arrive soon. I know Captain Arianna was pretty peeved when people came in late for the last meeting. This is, after all, an emergency situation. Perhaps while we're waiting we should get ourselves some lunch. I've always thought there should be food at these meetings, it always makes it easier to discuss things and lightens the mood a little bit," said Paul with a grin as Doctor Engtamn-Jensi and Admiral Gr'iann entered the room. Engtamn seemed to be sniffing the air excitedly. Engtamn walked over to one of the tables and exclaimed as loudly as Paul had ever heard him, "Albucca! You had them make albucca! I haven't had that since I left Grazerite! Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Paul leaned over the table and whispered to Doctor Mackenzie, "Its a dish common to his home world, I had the staff do a bit of research. I figure we all could use a little taste of home."
