However it was preferable for the Captain not to know of what Soval was planning and logic indicated a suitable justification would be if no one knew he had even left the Spectre. He slipped into the transporter room after quickly ascertaining that it was vacant, swiftly moving towards the operator consol where his SFI codes allowed him to override the security lockout without any trace of the action remaining. After a few moments he programmed the system for a return transport on his signal, which would again not be recorded by the computer. He stepped onto the transporter pad and dematerialised several seconds later as the shields cycled over the waveguides allowing transport. (USS Nightingale - Deck 8, Crew Quarters - 1740) Soval sat down at the computer terminal shortly after the transporter had deposited him within the quarters that the Spectres sensors had indicated were vacant. As he instigated his access of the Nightingales computer he paused briefly checking that his presence had not been detected aboard the vessel, while he had several devices that would render his detection extremely difficult he was relying on the simple fact that the ship was Starfleet and thus the computer was programmed to ‘ignore’ the presence of SFI operatives. The probability that the programming would still remain was high since few knew of its existence and Soval considered it to be a lesser risk than preparing complex equipment on short notice. After several minutes he rose from his position and made his way to the room’s door, unfortunately the computer structure had been altered, to a degree, and his SFI codes were unable to retrieve either strategic information or primary ship systems without access to a bridge terminal. The delay would be detrimental since his calculations indicated the Spectre would likely evade the Nightingale quickly however the information he could acquire would prove more than sufficient compensation. Almost in response to his doubts Soval watched the Spectre go to warp through the rooms window, ~logical~ (USS Nightingale - Bridge - 1832) Soval pushed an unconscious officer from his seat before the helm consol and took his place; glancing at the device now attached to his arm to prevent himself becoming affected by the delta radiation permeating the vessel due to the modifications Soval had made earlier to the vessels navigational deflector. Although the effects were short lived it was a logical choice since a few adjustments to science reports from the initial exploration of the subspace river would lead to the conclusion that the river had caused the effect, therefore it was implausible that suspicion would fall upon an enemy agent being onboard. As he began to access the main computer network Soval reconsidered his earlier calculations, he had successfully subdue the crew 13 minutes earlier than predicated however given the numerable variables he considered it to be an acceptable inaccuracy. Logically there was little probability that he would not succeed; few individuals onboard the vessel could defeat a fully trained operative in a fair contest, and Soval had utilised the element of being unknown to ensure there was not a fair contest. After a few minutes Soval initiated the download of the Nightingales central database, unfortunately the information contained within not as substantial as he had envisaged since the Nightingale was merely a support vessel, however it was still sufficient and would prove useful for Strategic Operations. Following a few modifications to the vessels database to disguise his own actions, as well as an alteration to the sensor logs of the Spectre to conceal her ionisation signature, and therefore prevent any possibility of pursuit. As a final alteration he programmed the computer to eject the vessels warp core subsequent to the starship entering warp, thereby logically delaying the vessel further. ~It would appear logical to use the idea they provided~ (Shuttlecraft Voltaire - Bridge - 1900) Soval set course for Starbase Geneva curious as to whether his absence had been noted onboard the Spectre. ~Given recent events it would be logical to assume they would not desire my presence~ After waiting patiently for several moments he confirmed that the Nightingale crew were beginning to resuscitate, and he rechecked that the departure of the shuttle had not be recorded. ~That event will logically result in considerable confusion~ he thought to himself as he entered warp. She smiled and nodded to the transporter operator, then said, "Follow me. We're going through that door, and onto the Promenade." The three native refugees were already looking bewildered as well as excited. Kahila couldn't help but know their feelings, they were broadcasting loud and clear. When she'd shepherded them to the doorway, she looked back, and saw that Felicity Wells had arrived on the platform, accompanied by three more refugees. Kahila waved to her, then went out onto the Promenade. This was her first glimpse of the Promenade of Starbase Geneva, and she felt nearly as excited- as if recapturing her own youth - as the natives. Kahila hoped that all the natives who wished to, would be able to make a tour of the Promenade before they were relocated to a new homeworld. When she'd explained the opportunity to them, only a few of the younger people were courageous and curious enough to take her up on the offer. To Kahila's way of thinking, the natives had been exposed to interplanetary battles and danger and had their home destroyed by the Xenolithe; they deserved to see some of the wonders of interstellar civilization. Jace and Binna, a young married couple, held hands and rushed through the doorway behind Kahila, then they stopped, uncertain. "I had not imagined it would be so . . .busy," Jace said. "Oh, I know you told us. But this. . .so many shapes of things." He shrugged, embarrassed at his own hesitation. Fifteen-year old Caro, pushed past them and spun around, eyes wide, trying to take in every sight at once. "I think it's wonderful! Where can we go first, Kahila?" "I think we'll look at clothing shops," she told them. Clothing, she reasoned, would be familiar items to them, regardless of fashion and textile differences. Jace and Binna began with enthusiasm, but wound down after the first two shops. Kahila thought that Caro would never lose interest in anything she could see or hear or touch. She took them to a music shop that was hosting a holo performance of an ancient Earth aria, and directed Jace and Binna to seats, not bothering for the moment to explain what a holo performance actually was. Then she took Caro with her, to a shop that Kahila couldn't resist. "These are holo-scenes and sculptures," she told Caro. "Some of them change, and some remain locked-in to a scene or design." She laughed. "You know, now that I'm here, I'd like to buy something for my quarters. Nothing large. Just something that will take my mind briefly elsewhere. Like visual meditation." Caro looked puzzled, then shrugged it off, as if she didn't expect to understand much of her surroundings or Kahila's conversation. "But you can't touch these, can you?" The girl discovered. "That's because they're a form of light," Kahila said. "Like our sun." Caro said, then amended. "Like any of the suns. I used to think there was only one. Can you imagine?" Kahila smiled at her. She was so obviously trying to show her growing sophistication. Kahila suddenly know which of the sculptures she wanted. It was an abstract fractal form, that changed in subtle, random ways as she watched. And it was interactive, responding to her touch by spiraling up and down her arm. "Perfect." She whispered. After she'd completed the transaction, she walked away from the shop with the boxed sculpture, Caro trailing behind her, catching a last glance at the shop's window. "We'll see how Jace and Binna are enjoying the concert," Kahila said. "Kahila," Caro's voice had turned so soft that Kahila had to stop and turn toward her to hear. "I don't want to go with the others to another planet. I don't want to farm, or get married. I want to stay on the Spectre with you. See more places like this. Can I do that?" Kahila sighed. She wondered if her idea of providing tours for the refugees had been so beneficial after all. And she wondered if there was some place the girl could be sent for a real education, a real future. reply none posted by Josephine Goodman (USS Spectre: Bridge - TAC/SC Pierce Orde - 1010) Pierce stopped before the Captain's ready room door and pressed the chime. (Reply Remae) (USS Spectre: Captain's Ready Room - TAC/SC Pierce Orde - 1011) "Captain, I have a preliminary tactical loadout for Spectre," he said, presenting a PADD to the captain. "I believe you will find it satisfactory: we lose some of our firepower but we do still hold our ace... which reminds me: what, if I may ask, are you going to tell the Admiral about our ace, if anything?" (Reply Remae) (Posted by Lenox) NRPG: By my study of the Spectre's specs, the Photon Flux cannon has taken the place of the single forward photon tube. She still has two quantum tubes, however (fore and aft), according to specs. -Lenox - Lord of Hyphens ---------------------------------------- (USS Spectre, Counseling Office, Kahila Lono, 11:00) Kahila had asked Ensign Felicity Wells to meet her in the Counseling office, and to bring with her the leader of the village of native refugees, as well as Chalin, the native who was the father of Caro. Felicity sat at the desk to Kahila's left, and the two natives sat in the comfo-fabric chairs in front of the desks. Kahila explained, mostly to Chalin, "I'd like to be your daughter's guardian- at least for a couple of years- if you'd agree. I think she has definite potential for higher education, and just as important, she has curiosity about her surroundings, cultural and scientific." She watched surprise flit across his face, then anger, as he didn't speak for a few minutes. Finally he sighed and said, "I realize you're offering her a chance she would never have had if we hadn't been displaced from our home. Maybe that's a good thing. But maybe not!" A moment later, he gestured, as if pushing something aside. "Caro hasn't had an easy time of it, since her mother died. I thought when I remarried, she'd adjust. But though there haven't been any disastrous incidents, she hasn't grown close to my new wife. My youngest daughter is doing fine, but not Caro. Then . . ." he gestured again, "Everything happened. Caro seems more and more restless." Kahila nodded, encouraging him to think the situation through, as fully as he needed. Then she said, "I haven't spoken to Caro about my plans, so this is all tentative. I hope to arrange for her to stay on the Spectre for a while, but I haven't spoken to the Captain as yet. Wherever she is, I'd like for her to follow an advanced curriculum of study, and eventually- if she wants - apply to Starfleet Academy. But of course that's a few years in the future." "I won't stand in her way, if that's what she wants. Your Starfleet are good people, you rescued us, and even as many of our belongings as you could." He nodded. She thanked him and assured him she'd do whatever possible to see that Caro had the opportunities she'd need to feel challenged and hopeful about her future. Then she turned to the village leader. "I've also been thinking about the educational needs of all the village young people. They've been exposed to technology and lifestyles very different from what would ordinarily occur. That can't be changed or ignored. When you're resettled, it will be important for them to feel excited about the future of your society." (Would anyone like to play the role of village headman, and reply?) She continued, "With your permission, I'd like to arrange to have basic educational material- especially in science, math, and comparative sociology and linguistics, translated into printed books, as much as possible in your own language." She turned to Felicity, "While we're docked, you can talk to the teachers at the Starbase school, and ask what courses they suggest, then apply for computer time- for printing and translation." reply Feclicity, any posted by Josephine Goodman <> (USS Spectre: Counseling Office - Village Headman - 1103) "I've also been thinking about the educational needs of all the village young people. "Change is one of the few things in life that is inevitable," he said slowly. "Many resist it, others leap to it in naivete; few accept it as it comes. Our people will adapt: we always do. Some will wish to remain on this space-vessel, others will wish for home on land. It is the way of things; I shall lead them in as much wisdom as I possess. Those who wish to remain or leave the village-group will be allowed to do so, with proper counsel. Those who wish to seek land for our people will also be welcomed. As for myself, I am too attached to these people to leave them adrift: I ask that you send word to your ruling body, asking if there may be a place for us to live." "A wise choice. I will ask some of our learned men to assist you." -Lenox - Lord of Hyphens (Starbase Geneva, Promenade, Kahila Lono,12:00) Kahila had seen a notice, a few hours earlier, when she'd been on the Promenade, for a multi- cultural drumming contest. It took place in a small plaza on Deck 25. She assumed there would be dancing, and she was right. ~It's been much, much too long since I've danced!~ She stood in a semi-circle of observers, some clapping, some beginning the first few dance steps. The drummers were varied: a Klingon, two Humans, Bolian, Betazoid, - and fascinating for Kahila to watch - a Bynar pair-- playing two small cymbal-like drums. She'd dressed in casual, off-duty clothing: a floral print skirt that swirled around her legs as she moved out to the center of the plaza, with a white scoop-necked blouse, and sandals. She let the oddly-varying beat work its way into her body, and followed it. A few minutes later, she looked back over her shoulder to where Caro still stood, watching. The girl had also remembered the notice and asked to come along. Kahila still had not told her the ideas she had for her future; she planned to do that later in the afternoon. Now she motioned for Caro to join the dancing. It was the first time Kahila had seen her look shy. But a moment later, she began to dance, looking down to watch her feet, then meeting Kahila's gaze, smiling. reply (anyone off-duty who'd like to dance, and meet Kahila's adopted daughter) posted by Josephine Goodman <>
