A few hours in Engineering and Remae hadn't made any progress on the warp drive. "Thank you Ensign.", said Remae talking a PADD from a young man. The PADD contained the latest damage report, transporters, phasers; warp drive, tractor and the cloak had all failed in the past few hours. They had a few torpedoes left but the power to fire them was questionable. Shields were offline and power to a number of decks had been cut down and rerouted to Sickbay and Sensors and other crucial systems. =^= Engineering to Captain =^= "Go ahead.", said the CO. =^= The core just went offline, the reaction rate had dropped to 15% and we failed to sustain it =^= "Understood. Bridge this is the Captain, put the ship into energy conservation mode level 2.", said the CO closing the channel as he entered Sickbay. Wounded were all around but unlike the rest of the ship, Sickbay had full power, lighting and environmental control. He walked down the bio-beds and looked at the wounded. "Status?", he asked one of the Medical Team. (Reply from anyone) "I've routed the bulk of the power down here, I'll keep systems running as long as I can.", he said before taking his leave from the Medical Bay, he wasn't accomplishing a lot here. (USS Spectre, Cargo Bay 1, CO, Captain Remae - 11.45) He spent a moment bring up the survivors of their doomed planet up to speed, the leaders remained understanding and they were grateful to be alive. Their destination was Geneva and from there, they could relocate to anywhere the wanted. if the Federation stayed together. Remae went back to Engineering to lend whatever help he could but without the core being online, it wasn't looking good for the power systems. (USS Spectre, Ready Room, CO, Captain Remae - 12.30) Long range sensors had discovered a shuttle heading their way, identification confirmed it was Federation and it was heading for them. Remae confirmed they could dock with the Spectre and he resumed working in his office. (USS Spectre, Ready Room, CO, Captain Remae - 13.05) "Ensign Peabody reporting for duty, Captain!", said the new arrival and Remae was dumbfounded how this shuttle had managed to find them and that, according to the PADD, this Ensign was an ACEO. It seemed fate had delivered to them what they needed, for a change! "Welcome aboard, Ensign. have a seat, please.", said Remae to the new Ensign. "Well, all I can say is that your timing is perfect, no doubt from your scans on arrival of the Spectre, you noticed we've got major problems with the Warp Drive system. We can't get the core back online and as a result, power problems across the ship are getting worse." Remae explained about the mission with the Xenolithe and what had happened when they were badly damaged in battle. "As you're the only senior office in Engineering, I am making you Acting Chief Engineering Officer, congratulations, I need you to get down there and get that core online, anyway you can, use whomever you need, if you have any problems see the FO or me." He paused for a moment before adding, "There is a meeting in the Observation Lounge at 17.00 and a memorial service later today, please make sure you are present for both events. any questions, Ensign?" (Reply from Peabody) "Carry on Ensign.", said Remae as the lights flickered again in his office, the power problems were still getting worse, Remae hoped this new ACEO was ready to take on the problems of a starship! (Reply from Peabody, Sickbay, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) <> (USS Spectre, Ready Room, ACEO Peabody - 13.05) "Well, all I can say is that your timing is perfect, no doubt from your scans on arrival of the Spectre, you noticed we've got major problems with the Warp Drive system. Any questions, Ensign?" Peabody shook his head. There wasn’t much else to do. Get the ship working again and get them home. There wasn’t much left to say. “None Captain. I’ll get her back to life again.” "Carry on Ensign." The tallish and skinnish newly minted engineer jumped from his chair and headed out the door, pulling out a PADD from his side. He always carried one. Quickly he pulled up the diagrams of the USS Spectre. He walked quickly down the halls without looking up, but managing to avoid running into anyone he met along the way. Speaking to the PADD about where things where and what state they were in. He spoke kindly to the little electronic unit, coaxing his needed information from it as he took a turn down a hallway to a manual ladder entrance. Without taking his eyes from the PADD, he grabbed the hatch and flung it behind him, turned his body around and began to climb down or up, he wasn’t paying attention. (USS Spectre, Engineering, ACEO Peabody - 13.25) He was still talking to the PADD when he entered engineering, walking to the center of the room, doing a few last changes to the information in front of him before turning the gaggle of officers running around the room. “HEYYYOO!” His loud voice boomed throughout the room, stopping everyone in their tracks. They turned to him, and didn’t know who the hell he was. He motioned them over to him and he waited until the bedraggled crew was quiet. “I understand we’ve lose our commanding officer in engineering. I heard of the man you called your chief. He was a good officer. But right now is not the time to mourn his passing. That will happen after 1700 hours and we’ll give the man a proper honor. Right now we need to get this ship saved and back in gear. It is your duty, your calling and your desire to fix this ship, repair her and care for her until she is no more. And that is exactly what we are going to do! Report?” A youngish man stepped forward slowly. “It’s all gone to hell sir…the core is offline, the transporters are offline, nearly everything has been disabled or destroyed…we’re losing power by the minute and we’re…” Peabody stopped the young man with a hand up. He stuttered and then stepped back. Peabody looked at each of the officers. They had been through hell. Some of them had lost friends. All had lost their chief and most of all, their hope. He sighed deeply. “You know what my father used to do? He was a doctor of medicine. And you know what he did? He healed people. He fixed them and always managed to save lives. The man never gave up, and he never thought the end was near. His hands, his eyes and his ears always focused on some way to save a life. We’re doctors and damn it we’ve got a patient here that needs our help.” Looking around the room he continued. “We can’t talk about her like we have been. She’s dying and she’s knows it. We’ve got to talk positive, be positive. She hears us talking about her death and she’s gonna give up hope. She’ll stop helping us and struggling to survive. And damn it, I cannot let that happen. Not on my watch, not on my duty and not on my ship. I need solutions. We need solutions. If we don’t, she dies and we go down with her. Ensign, what is your report?” The young man’s eyes were wide. The 35 year old chief in front of him had just become a 50 year old veteran and he wasn’t sure what to make of it. Slowly, he began to read the report. “Erm…well chief, all systems can be repaired. We’re going to need wiring, conduits and a mass of replacement parts and units to get the ship back online. The core needs a complete rewiring on the outside as it’s been fried. We have to start with that first to get the Spectre at least powered. The warp drives are fused…” He looked up and Peabody was listening intently. “We can fix that after we get the core back online and begin to repair all the systems that are offline.” Walter nodded and the young man sighed with relief. “One thing. You can call me Doc or Doctor. I’m not a fan of Chief, Mr. Peabody or anything else. Now. Where is the core?” (USS Spectre, Engineering, ACEO Peabody - 1556) It had been a maddening few hours. The entire engineering crew, along with whoever they had managed to get grab from the crew was spread all over the main engineering area. The entire core had been taken apart, aside from the parts that couldn’t be unless it had been behind protection. Three teams had been wiring, testing, re-configuring and then testing again. “Doc” Peabody stood at the head table, his glasses covering his eyes. The attack had packed a wallop, nearly sending the Spectre into fits of disaster. Thankfully, the engineering crew was trying their hardest to save her. “Doc! Got secondary assembly complete!” He nodded as he worked. “Get it over here and attach it there! Then we’ll get this things together over there and then this little girl I’ve got here will work…” He kept rambling on, much to the amusement of the men and women around him. They had discovered his secret of talking to himself early on in the process, and a few had wondered just what made the man tick. Now, they were starting to understand. Peabody’s mind worked fast and his mouth had to keep up. Or something like that. The lights were flickering almost constantly now. Battery power, Auxillary power and whatever else they had managed to program was running low. And it wasn’t a good thing in any way. “Secondary attached and functioning!” A small cheer went up and they quickly went about dealing with the third and fourth parts to the core. The Doc was proud of the work. The core would almost work better than it had before. If it didn’t, he’d take it apart himself again. “Fourth unit ready!” It was quickly attached and powered. All four units were now functioning as one and without much problem. “Fifth ready!” A quiet silence settled as the last part was assembled. Slowly the core was reattached to all the parts left. Within moments it was back where it belonged. Peabody stood near the front where it was attached. He looked over to a crewman and nodded. It was time. The core had to come online. The necessary system changes were made. The damage control teams stood ready at the door with their suits and tools. Just in case. “Gavins, begin startup sequence. Engage main clamps and activate the main coupling.” The man nodded and the core quickly lit up as the computer began to run through its program. Officers prayed, bowed their heads and whatever else it took. A rabbits foot was on a few hands as they waited. A few sparks flew as it began to power on and the damage team startled, but the sparks stopped soon enough. In moments the lights went out. Totally. “Gavins! Get the damn power transfer going!” Quickly, the lights returned brighter and in their original power. Gavins turned and grinned. “Power is online and functioning. Emergency, Auxillary and Battery power is charging.” Peabody smiled and let out a whoop, which the rest of the room joined in. High fives and hugs were exchanged. Quickly they came back to focus as Peabody addressed them. “We’ve got one hour to get the other systems repaired. I know it’s impossible, but we have to get this girl in the best condition we can. She ours and we take care of her. Gavins, get the repair teams organized and send them out throughout the ship. Shields, transporters, tractor beams, warp drive and whatever else. Also, activate the cleaning crew and get them moving. We need the debris cleaned up by 1700 hours. One hour. Let’s move people!” (reply any, all) (posted by adelay) <> (USS Spectre, Bridge, CO, Captain Remae - 15.30) Remae was back on the Bridge and as the lights continued to flicker, he was examining each duty station to see what was happening. "Hey Pierce.", he said, leaning up against the main Tactical Control Station, he was tired and as the power failure all around him continued, so did the Captains. It was as if the ship and he were linked in someway. "What's our Tactical Status?", he said, looking across at the displays as the Security Chief ran his checklist. (Reply from Pierce) "I see. Keep at it, Lieutenant, when we get main power back, concentrate on reassembling the shields before anything else. I'll explain more in the meeting." (Reply from Pierce) "Carry on.", he said, walking back down to the Command Chair. He must have made about three circuits of the Bridge before finally getting out of the way and returning to his Ready Room. ~ Too much coffee and not enough rest ~ (USS Spectre, Ready Room, CO, Captain Remae - 15.45) "Bridge to Maber, Ensign can you report to me with your findings on the Xenolithe and any analysis you were able to get from the probe data. I'll need a full briefing before we get to Geneva." (Reply from Octan) "Thank you Ensign.", said the Captain and just for a moment, he closed his eyes. (USS Spectre, Ready Room, CO, Captain Remae - 16.00) A cheer went up and Remae snapped back and awake... as he was summoned back to the Bridge, the core was back online, somehow Ensign Peabody had done the impossible. without the use of a drydock. Remae walked on the Bridge and joined in the congratulations that was going around. "Bridge to Engineering, thank you Ensign, we owe you a great deal of thanks. Well done. Your next job is to repair the nacelles, they were both fused in the recent attack, we need Warp Speed as soon as possible." (Reply from Peabody) "Very good, carry on, Ensign.", said the CO as he sat down once more at his chair. Power was restored and gently, all systems were coming back online. (Reply from Pierce, Octan, Peabody, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (/USS Spectre/: Main Engineering - Ensign Peabody - 1605) "Good work, Doc, George Orde; civillian officer, specializing in warp mechanics. If you ever care for a question to be answered, I and my wife would be glad to help." Peabody looked at the man and smiled slightly. He reached out his hand as well and gave a warm handshake. "Thank you for the welcome Mr. Orde. I appreciate it. I've got a feeling I might be asking you many a question about this ship. I just got onboad and it seems like you've been around here for awhile. Anything I should know about this ship before I start in on things?" "Sir, all you see in me is a quick study: I've been here less than a week -- I originally came aboard to retrofit a experimental cannon to the Spectre (we've almost finished). This ship was designed with legs and stealth. Almost half of the crew have some sort of engineering background -- don't be afraid to use that if you need to -- and, this is still your department, not mine. Run her as you see fit."
