He fought hard to contain his excitement as the small craft slipped through the void of space and towards Spacedock Phoenix. He looked over at the pilot and grinned as the moved forward. His ship was one of three currently housed at the Spacedock. One, a Prometheus Class, as of yet unclaimed and a small Defiant Class being shipped to an Outpost somewhere. The one that interested him at the moment, however, had Workbee craft streaming around it, trying to meet what seemed to be an impossible deadline. Battle damage that had been present on the hull of the ship only a day before had been erased and the small craft buzzing around the hull fought to ensure that everything was in its properly place. The design of the new Galaxy refit was a class unto itself, with a lot more firepower than had previously been seen in that class with armaments mounted on the three nacelles. Edward was too experienced to hope they’d never have to use them, but he did know with certainty that it could pack a punch. The shuttlecraft careened underneath the Champlain, giving Edward an excellent look at the underbelly. ~Its huge,~ Edward thought. Not as big as the flying Starbase known as the Paladin, but slightly larger than the Nimitz. This ship was meant to be its own community, self contained and self-sufficient. These were excellent qualities considering the mission that lie ahead. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain - Main Engineering - Acting CEO - Lt. Rellie Dezlar - 0916) "No! No! NO!" The man shouted at the junior engineer. Rellie walked up silently and stood watching before clearing her throat. "Is there a problem?" she asked, politely. Lt. (JG) Matthew Traven turned around and looked embarrassed when he saw Rellie. Traven was the Yard Engineer, the man responsible for refitting up the Champlain's warp drive. Dezlar had been aboard since yesterday, however, she spent most of her time working on the other ship's systems. "Sir, I'm sorry, I didn't-..." Traven started to explain. "No worries," she said softly, shifting her weight to one leg, her exoskeleton adjusted accordingly. Being an Elaysian, she wore an mechanical exoskeleton at all times, to help her fragile body work and play in the standard Earth-gravity. Only her off-hours in her quarters or in the holodeck did she set the gravity level to Elaysia-gravity, allowing her to move free of her mechanical body. "What is the problem here?" she asked. "This crewman was incorrectly figuring the matter/antimatter ejection rate," Traven explained, somewhat defeated. ~It must be hard for him, putting so much work into a ship, then never seeing it again,~ Rellie pondered. She turned and started walking towards the corridor, Traven took the hint and followed next to her. "How long have you been with the Champlain, lieutenant?" she asked. "Since they stripped the nacelles to the space frame, sir. I supervised the installation of the nacelles," he said proudly, like a father who watched his child born. "I see. How does she run?" "Perfect. They told us at the Academy that uneven nacelled ships lost a lot of performance, but... man she can fly, sir." There was an odd silence for a few steps. Traven could hear the mechanical hum of Dezlar's exoskeleton. "What ship are you working on next?" Rellie asked. "Oh, a new Nova class, called the USS-..." he stopped has soon has he saw they were standing at the doors of a turbolift. He was being kicked out. There was a uncomfortable silence. "I won't break her, lieutenant. Neither will Captain Wolfe," she said with a smile. He nodded and looked at the floor. He entered the turbolift, turned and looked back at Rellie. He didn't say anything, then finally... "She's a good ship, sir, with a fine set of legs on her," Traven said. "I know. Thank you, Lieutenant," she said, and the doors of the turbolift slide shut, taking Lt. Traven to the shuttle bay. Dezlar walked back to engineering, where she spent the rest of the morning meeting with her staff, reading Traven's reports, and running her own diagnostics on the warp drive, and other critical systems. Despite all the horror stories about ships coming out of dock being faulty, the Champlain was solid all the way through. (Posted by Kevin) (USS Champlain – Main Shuttle bay – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 0927) Soon, the shuttlecraft moved towards the main docking bay. Edward watched with awe as the doors began to open, lights flashing. In a seamless effort, the craft was docked and they were inside. Edward looked out of the craft to see some of the Engineers working on the ship looking back. He spied the highest ranking of the group. “Permission to come aboard Lieutenant,” he said aloud. “Granted Sir,” came the pleased reply and Edward left the craft, feeling the deck plates beneath his feet for the first time. Edward took a cursory glance around him and had a quick inspection and chat about the work the men in the shuttle bay were engaged in, and then he head towards the turbolift. “Bridge,” Edward stated and the lift beeped and began to move. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain - Jefferies Tube - Acting CEO - Lt. Rellie Dezlar - 0929) Rellie was now laying on her back, looking at an open service panel, looking at an exposed ODN conduit. Of all the time, the computer network had to fail just before the Captain was supposed to come onboard, shutting down computer support for the lower 5 decks. She had gone to fix it her self to cut some time, she could swap out a ODN node faster than anybody, she had set the record on the USS Ebon Hawk, but most of the repair time came from her exoskeleton clunking around in the small tubes. She had just about finished when an unexpected call came from Lt. Traven. =/\= Traven to Dezlar, =/\= She stopped and paused. "Lieutenant, didn't I dismiss you over a half an hour ago-?" she asked, growing angry that he had stayed on the ship longer than needed to be. =/\= Captain Wolfe arrived, I thought you might like to know," he said with a hint of arrogance. Rellie got even angrier. Traven sounded like an ego-freak, and now she understood. He wanted to have the Captain ask him permission to come aboard. That didn't bother her, but she would now forget to make a comment on Traven's service record. "Thank you, lieutenant, Dezlar out," she said, and she began uncomfortably crawling back towards the hatch, where she climbed out and headed to the turbolift, her mind still thinking about that rat Traven and his ego-trip. (Posted by Kevin) (USS Champlain – Bridge – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 0942) Edward felt a surge of pride as he stepped onto the bridge and someone called out “Captain on the Bridge” and the working crew snapped to attention. Chuckling, Edward held out his hand, “Thanks everyone, but if I keep you from working too long I won’t be able to launch. At ease and as you were.” Walking through the bridge, Edward had a quick look around him and smiled again. The configuration for the vessel was that of explorer and the bridge reflected that. Walking down to the centre seats, Edward inspected the chair that would be his through so many future missions. He sat down, trying it out. ~Feels like home.~ After allowing a certain amount of senseless excitement sweep over him Edward stood up and retreated to his ready room in full knowledge that new crew and department heads would soon be presenting themselves. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain - Ready Room - Acting CEO - Lt. Rellie Dezlar - 0944) Rellie left the turbolift and saw the bridge, not for the first time. She had been their upon her arrival yesterday, however, instead of engineers, installing a captain's chair and replacing the Science terminal, it was now filled a bridge crew. She nodded to them and went to the door of the Ready Room and pressed the door chime. (reply Wolfe) Upon given permission, she entered the bridge and went to attention, "Sir! Lieutenant Rellie Dezlar, Acting Chief Engineer, sir," she said, and waited at attention for his response. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (Starbase Geneva - Promenade - Counselor - Lt. Alosar- 0945) Alosar had already had enough of this Starbase. As much as he, for lack of a better phrase, enjoyed, watching inter-species interactions There had been quite enough of that to last him a while. Apparently there had been some kind of epidemic on Geneva two weeks ago, and when he had arrived they wanted him to counsel those who had been mentally affected by the situation, which appeared to be most of the station. Many was the night that Alosar went to his quarters requiring several hours of meditation in order to regain his emotional balance. Finally he'd been informed that the CO of the Champlain was preparing to take on his crew. Alosar figured that it would probably be a good idea for the two of them to meet the crew simultaneously, to save on time. They could exchange preliminary evaluations of the crew before he sat down to look at their profiles. The Vulcan decided to find a quiet space to make contact with his new CO. He had read the file on Commander Edward Wolfe, and knew that the man had had an unusual career. Even after his experience at System 663, a conflict that ended not as well as it might have, that would have broken most men, and he seemed to manage to rebound under the command of Captain Sash, on the Nimitz. He had to wonder at the man's confidence. Human confidence was such a fleeting thing. Alosar finally found his quiet spot. He closed his eyes for a moment and bridged his fingers at the center of his face to check his own focus. Feeling adequately prepared for the task at hand he tapped his comm. badge. "Counselor Alosar to Captain Wolfe, requesting permission to come aboard and meet with you." (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 0948) Edward had just comfortably sat back in the chair behind his desk and had gotten himself a cup of hot black coffee when his intercom chirped. =^=Counselor Alosar to Captain Wolfe, requesting permission to come aboard and meet with you.=^= ~Ah yes, the Vulcan Counsellor. There's a weird one.~ "Lieutenant, you are welcome aboard. You will find me in my Ready Room," stated Edward directly. He couldn't help but wonder why Alosar was onboard so early, but it wasn't an extreme issue. Vulcans had a mind in them to be punctual as well as logical. Edward was more concerned about the Vulcan's work on holding back emotions in dealing with those who were overly emotional. It was for this reason that he had employed a second counsellor, albeit younger and less experienced, who was... human. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 0949) Edward had just completed his comm conversation with Lieutenant Alosar when the chime to his door rang. ~So... here we go, it gets busy now. I guess I'll learn how Sash feels.~ "Enter," Edward called aloud. He watched as a frail looking woman in an exoskeleton walked into the room. Nodding, he was instantly reminded of the file on his Acting Chief Engineer. Still, he let her introduce herself. "Sir! Lieutenant Rellie Dezlar, Acting Chief Engineer, sir," she said. Edward nodded for a second and smiled, "Lieutenant Dezlar, nice to meet you. Have a seat." Edward motioned at one of the chairs in front of his desk. "I'm sorry for the rather Spartan state of my office so far, however moving is always a bit of a pain. I'm sure you understand." (Reply Dezlar) "How are your quarters? I have the report here that the requested modifications were made," stated Edward. He had never served with an Elaysian before, but was well aware that they found the gravity he was accustomed to crippling. (Reply Dezlar) Edward nodded for a second, "Next question. I know from the reports I've read that she's still a bit of a mess. The battle she got taken from left her a bit scarred and miracles have been done, but there's still a lot to do. We have seven days. We're expected to leave Spacedock on Stardate 2408.03.03. Are we going to make it?" (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain - Ready Room - Acting CEO - Lt. Rellie Dezlar - 0950) "Lieutenant Dezlar, nice to meet you. Have a seat," the captain offered. Rellie nodded and sat down in the chair and smiled. "I'm sorry for the rather Spartan state of my office so far, however moving is always a bit of a pain. I'm sure you understand." Rellie laughed softly, "Ah yes, Captain, my quarters are much in the same condition," she said with a smile. "How are your quarters? I have the report here that the requested modifications were made," he asked. "Ah yes. I used it last night, since I arrived yesterday afternoon. It is quiet acceptable," she said, ~Not the same has true Elaysia, but it'll do,~ she though, smiling. "Next question. I know from the reports I've read that she's still a bit of a mess. The battle she got taken from left her a bit scarred and miracles have been done, but there's still a lot to do. We have seven days. We're expected to leave Spacedock on Stardate 2408.03.03. Are we going to make it?" She nodded, "We most certainly will, Captain. Right now, the holodecks are offline, but they should be back online by 11.00. Turbolift shafts 4 and 6 are offline for some 'strange noises' and 'vibrations' reported by the crew arriving, so I've shut them down and my teams are looking at them now, just to be safe. And the all replicators below Deck 25 aren't working, has up right now," she added. (reply Wolfe, iyw) "Has for the critical systems, warp drive and impulse are ready. Most thrusters are ready, except for the Dorsal side, which was incorrectly installed by the Workbees, and they're now rushing to correct the problem. The ODN nodes on the lower five decks failed just as you arrived, sir, but that should be repaired easily. Life Support, Tactical, everything else is checked out," she said, finishing her report. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 0953) Edward sat back and let his CEO explain the current state of affairs with the ship's systems. She nodded, "We most certainly will, Captain. "Those are mostly auxiliary systems, so that's fine. It would be good if they were all working before the majority of the crew boarded. Make sure that safety interlocks are working so someone doesn't walk into an empty turbolift shaft please. I'd hate to lose my crew that way," stated Edward nodding slightly. He was sure she had already done it, but he had to ensure that everything was properly in place. "Has for the critical systems, warp drive and impulse are ready. Edward nodded shortly, life support was more important that just about anything else, but he wanted everything optimal before they left in a week. "We need the Optical Data Network, its a definite priority, especially once department heads start coming in and needing to access the system. I don't envy you your job Lieutenant, you have a lot of work ahead of you and seven days to do it in. We're working on getting more of your regular engineering staff on board, but you know how this works, they're coming from all over the place. Some won't be arriving until the very last minute." (Reply Dezlar) "I need you to check and double check all our systems. We also need to ensure our sensor systems and laboratories are running at top efficiency. I'm sorry for piling so much on your plate, but I'm sure you understand the situation I'm in as well," said Edward. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain - Ready Room - Acting CEO - Lt. {JG} Rellie Dezlar - 0956) "We need the Optical Data Network, its a definite priority, especially once department heads start coming in and needing to access the system. We're working on getting more of your regular engineering staff on board, but you know how this works, they're coming from all over the place. Some won't be arriving until the very last minute." Rellie nodded, "Yes captain, I understand. I will work on the network as soon has I left from your office, sir," she said, "Is there anything else I can do?" she asked. "I need you to check and double check all our systems. We also need to ensure our sensor systems and laboratories are running at top efficiency. I'm sorry for piling so much on your plate, but I'm sure you understand the situation I'm in as well," Wolfe said. "No worries, Captain, such is the life of a Chief Engineer," she said with a light-hearted smile. She could already tell she was going put in more than one 'all-nighter' in during this upcoming week, so she might as well smile now. "I'll have the Champlain ready once its time to depart, sir," she said. (reply Wolfe) "Yes, sir. Thank you," Rellie said, she nodded and left the Ready Room, and got back into the turbolift and headed back to Deck 39, to finish repairs on the ODN Network. (Posted by Kevin Schram) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 0958) Edward waited for what he figured would be the inevitable maelstrom of anger over his requests. He wasn't trying to be unreasonable, but he knew it would keep Engineering hopping pretty much around the clock. ~Well, its not like I get to sleep either for the next couple days,~ he thought grimly looking at the collection of PADDs in front of him. Edward was more than a little pleased when the eruption didn't take place. "No worries, Captain, such is the life of a Chief Engineer," she said with a light-hearted smile, "I'll have the Champlain ready once its time to depart, sir." "I appreciate that Lieutenant. I know that its pretty tight and means a lot of work... believe me I know. At any rate, I'd best not keep you from it. I appreciate your report. I'm sure we'll speak again later," Edward finished. "Yes, sir. Thank you," Rellie said. Edward watched as she left the room and door slid shut behind her. Then he grabbed a PADD and continued his tedious work. (Posted by Jeff) (Shuttle Phoenix - Cockpit - SC/TAC, Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1000) Jono breathed in, and then breathed out. His whole body was feeling the weight of this new assignment. The only other ship he had ever served on was the Nimitz, and he had risen through the ranks there through Default means... Did he have what it takes? Would he be able to manage the weight of the new position along with other more personal duties. He was there to find out, and he would do soon. As the shuttlecraft Phoenix got closer and closer to the USS Champlain, Jono began to feel the overwhelming size of the ship. He had began reading the Specs for the ship as soon as he received them, he was intrigued and as the Chief of Security, it would be an idea to familiarize himself with the ships layout. 42 Decks to manage. Security would be a nightmare at start, he hoped his teams would be able to manage the vessel sufficiently. His office as TAC/SC would be on Deck 15 of the saucer module, the shuttle Jono was in was just about to make a customary pass right by it so he began gazing out of the window... As the shuttle then passed over, the top side of the Galaxy Class Variant, Jono couldn’t help but glance at the weapons systems... "9 type 11 phaser arrays... 275 type 25 photonic torpedoes and 250 Quantum Torpedoes....Auto-modulation Regenerative shielding..." Jono muttered to himself and then smiled as he transmitted the shuttle's orders to the Champlain. "What was that Chief?" One of the 5 security men behind him said. Jono smiled, "Nothing really, just familiarizing myself with my new home" Jono said with a wink. Jono had taken the liberty while on Geneva - after the Crisis which has pursued while the Nimitz was in orbit - to find some of the Champlain's new security officers... It wasn’t a hard task he had just gone through Ortez, he had some connections on the base.... He had got 5 of them to come with him to the Champlain now, so they could get used to it. Jono was trying to get to know his new staff before leaving Dry Dock, and he thought he was making an impressive start on getting to do so. He had Goula, Triam, Privarse, Walters and Alexia with him, all young Ensigns raring to get going. He assumed that’s why they agreed to come along with him, try and make a good impression on the ships superiors. Jono looked down at his PADD and checked the launch date for the vessel, he then looked back at the ship and became increasingly worried, there seemed to be a lot more repairs and refits to be done before that date... ~Ah well...~ Jono thought to himself... ~give me time to look around~ He was looking forward to getting on board, for a start he'd get to see Master Edward Wolfe, CO of the Champlain and former FO of the Nimitz. Jono smiled, he had got used to the FO ~no.. CO now~ on the Nimitz, he wondered if power would go to Wolfe's head... He hoped not, it would make him more difficult to handle. Jono had yet to be apprised of the Champlain's FO but thought they would all soon find out, so didn’t bother asking... It would be a pleasant surprise once he/she did come on board. [Beep] came a sound from the computer, Jono looked down and then said "Looks like we have clearance... Take her in" Jono said to the flight operator. She nodded and then moved the shuttle over the Champlain’s saucer section until it finally reached the Main Shuttle bay entrance, the shuttle Jono and the others were in was only there to transport them there, as soon as its Job was done... it would be returning to Geneva. "Right boys, lets saddle up. We've got a ship to explore" Jono said in a half joyful tone.... (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain - Bridge - Counselor - Lt. Alosar- 1003) Alosar was well aware that he was early. He wondered why it was that every being that he spoke with since his arrival on the ship deemed it necessary to explain that fact to him. Did they really think he was incapable of consulting a chronometer. His mind played back the initial interaction in the transporter room. "Welcome aboard sir, you're early," the transporter chief said, matter of factly. "I am aware of the time Chief," Alosar stated, finding it a necessary to fight back a moment of irritation. He had a similar discussion with other crewmen on the way up to the deck 1. He arrived outside the Ready Room and took a deep breath, forcing himself to relax. His hand tapped the door chime, and once the door opened he entered the room. The Vulcan took a moment to take in the room. It was sparse, with boxes laid on the floor. The desk that Wolfe sat behind was clear of everything except a single cup of what appeared to be coffee. Alosar nodded to the CO and stepped up to the desk. "Lieutenant Alosar, Counselor, reporting for duty Captain Wolfe," he said, his face now devoid of all emotion. (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1010) Edward had only bid adieu moments before to his Acting Chief Engineer when his door chime sounded again. Edward suppressed the urge to roll his eyes and keyed the door open. Alosar entered, at least Edward assumed it was Alosar and not Mor'rel, as Alosaur had contacted him only a short time before. The man was unmistakably Vulcan in both his looks and demeanor. Tall and thin, the man entered and walked in front of his desk. "Lieutenant Alosar, Counselor, reporting for duty Captain Wolfe," he said. Edward cocked an eyebrow. He found this concept interesting, someone who had submerged his emotions, attempting to help others deal with their own. ~Oh well, infinite diversity and all that crap,~ he thought. "Have a seat Lieutenant. Welcome aboard, I wasn't expecting you so soon, but it will be most beneficial I'm sure that you can get a head start. Crew records are still coming in after all," stated Edward calmly. (Reply Alosar) "I'd say at present 10% of our crew compliment is aboard. It is a rather large ship after all. Another counsellor should be arriving shortly, an Ensign Rhinehart?" stated Edward, "Of course when we're finished here, you should both have your quarters assigned and check out the counselling offices. If its anything like the rest of the ship, its mostly in boxes still." (Reply Alosar) "Now, I need to ask you, do you have experience in First Contact? It is an absolute necessity given this ship's mandate," asked Edward, waiting for an answer. He was being more than honest about this need. Their work in the Beta Quadrant would be unprecedented. Only 10% of the quadrant had been properly mapped. While there were large sections unavailable due to the powers occupying them, there was still approximately 50% open to them. The Typhon Expanse held a special fascination. (Reply Alosar) "I've read some of your file, but still, I want to hear a few things from you. You have to admit that your vocation is a rather odd one given your decision not to submerge your emotions. What was the logic behind your choice? Explain so I may understand." (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain - Ready Room – COUNS/CO - Lt. Alosar and Captain Wolfe - 1012) "Have a seat Lieutenant. Welcome aboard, I wasn't expecting you so soon, but it will be most beneficial I'm sure that you can get a head start. Crew records are still coming in after all," stated Edward calmly. Alosr nodded at the Captain's welcome and moved over to the offered seat across the desk. "I wanted to meet as many of the crew as they came aboard. For some reason, many officers balk at the initial counselor's meeting. Most illogical, as it would only serve to make them more secure in their place on the ship. But, we are not talking about a ship full of Vulcans. However, I decided it would be a good idea to start talking with the crew that is already aboard." "I'd say at present 10% of our crew compliment is aboard. It is a rather large ship after all. Another counselor should be arriving shortly, an Ensign Rhinehart?" stated Edward, "Of course when we're finished here, you should both have your quarters assigned and check out the counseling offices. If it's anything like the rest of the ship, it's mostly in boxes still." Alosar thought about that prospect for a moment. He still had a bit of trouble with humor, and wasn't certain if the CO was just... kidding, or not. However, he decided to err on the side of caution. "I have not had anything transferred to the ship yet captain, nor do I have many personal items. Most of my belongings are with me now. So I doubt that ther will be many boxes in neither my quarters nor my office. However, I'm certain that the quartermaster will find adequate spacing for me." Wolfe gave him an odd look before speaking again. Alosar tried not to analyse the look, as, with humans, it is often just a look. Then he asked about the counselor's experience in First Contact missions. Alosar tilted his head a bit as he replied. The captain must have known his service record, and so already knew the answer to that question. However, he had observed that humans like to hear what they already knew as a type of reinforcement, so he just answered the question. "I have had several First Contact experiences," he said plainly, "including with the Draman, in the Andromeda sector. The records show that, although it was not the result that Starfleet wanted, the mission was deemed successful. There were others if you'd like me to recall them for you." "I've read some of your file," Wolfe admitted, "but still, I want to hear a few things from you. You have to admit that your vocation is a rather odd one given your decision not to submerge your emotions. What was the logic behind your choice? Explain so I may understand." Alosar raised an eyebrow at that question. He had not known most humans for being so blunt. "Actually, I believe that counseling is a most logical choice. When else is logic and a clear mind required then when dealing with emotional situations. I may not provide an ... emotional basis of support, but I can see problems with more of a clarity, and with less emotional entanglement." He paused for a moment. "I'd also like to remind the captain that Vulcans are not devoid of emotions, simply in control of them. I can understand that others will have an emotional response, and I am even capable of understanding why. The real problem in counseling, for anyone, is getting the subject to understand why they are having an emotional response. That is where Vulcan clarity can come in handy." He leaned forward, hoping the his CO would understand what he was about to say. "You see Captain, I view emotions as a, for lack of a better term, genetic disability. There is no cure for them, however, we can work out an understanding, and even teach others to be successful, in spite of that disability." Edward was slightly taken aback. A disability indeed. "Well, I am well aware that Vulcans are not devoid of emotions... however, I would view being devoid of emotions as being a disability. Emotions are not something in need of being cured. I don't mind your study of them, but please bear in mind that most species do not have the same beliefs of them as you do, and as a result they could find your ... theory... insulting." Alosar took this statement as a given, barely wondering why it needed to be stated. Although, there are still many prejudices, or stereotypes of Vulcans that had to be dealt with. "Indeed Captain," he stated, "nor would I be so candid to an average member of the crew. And please, understand, that I do not think of emotions as something to be cured, but to be understood. Curing emotionalism would be like curing hunger. There is a reason for both. However, just because you wouldn't cure your hunger, you wouldn't stop in the search for better ways of staving it?" Edward took this in for a second and then nodded. He had to admit the logic behind Alosar's assertation. "I do understand what you're saying and I do know its common for practitioners to conduct research as they go about their daily work. Just... well... remember that the research is the secondary goal," said Edward. "Of course Captain," Alosar agreed, "that is a most logical course, and well worth reminding anyone doing research. I will bare that as I go through my duties." He stopped and gave Wolfe a curious look. "Captain, you said that it would be beneficial for me to get a "head start." Are you anticipating any problems with the crew?" "Not so such, but as with any new vessel launch, we have a number of Ensigns beginning their first foray into space. That coupled with the war makes me concerned with their transition into the crew. I'm also concerned with the integration of Professor d'Kla's'turr," Edward replied, glancing at his PADD and then back to Alosar. "That would be the Coridanite," Alsoar noted. "I can understand your concerns. The breathing apparatus can be a bit frightening for the rest of the crew to get used to. But it is not unprecedented for crewmen to require atmospheric aids in service to Starfleet, as with the case of Elasians. I will make the Professor a priority." Edward nodded, "We do have an Elasian too, but lets be honest, the exoskeleton is not as... disconcerting to some individuals as the breathing apparatus, especially if they have limited contact with more... exotic... alien species. I would also let you know that we have two counselors for this vessel. Ensign Rhinehart will be joining you in the department. This is his first mission, I trust you to make his transition easier. To be fair, there was no way that this vessel, slotted with 1012 crew members, could run effectively with just one counselor." "Agreed," the Vulcan said with a nod. "Having a counseling staff for such a large crew is only logical. I will... take Ensign Rhinehart under my ornithological limb." (posted by Al Muir and Jeff Bergeron) (USS Champlain, Main Shuttle bay - SC/TAC - Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1015) After telling the Ensigns that no, they didn’t need to bring the mass of there luggage with them. They would find it in there quarters later, Jono exited the Shuttle to find a Security Lieutenant Junior Grade standing by the shuttles entry point. Before Jono stepped onto the Champlain he said, "Security and Tactical Chief, Lieutenant Jono Janeway - Requesting permission to board, Along with Ensigns Goula, Triam, Privarse, Walters, Alexia all of the security department" Jono said in a rather formal tone. The Lt. looked the group up and down and checked his roster and then nodded, "Welcome aboard," He said simply. Jono smiled and stepped down, "Its good to be here" Jono said. Overall he was quite nervous about his new assignment and he was also nervous about leaving the Nimitz's Security and Tactical department in the hands of another... He turned to the Ensigns and said "Do what you need to do, I'll meet up with you later... But first I must go see a friend of mine from my previous posting" Jono smiled as he said this, he nodded and headed out of the Shuttle bay and into a turbolift. (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain - CO's Ready Room - SC/TAC, Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1017) Jono stepped of the turbolift onto the bridge. He was struck with Awe, he walked slowly onto the main part of the bridge and let his hand flow over the smooth metals to his sides. Jono stopped in the middle of the bridge, and then looked out of the view screen... ~Wow~ Is all he could think... A sense of reality kicked back in a few seconds later and he remembered what he was doing, he smiled to all of the crew on the bridge and then headed on over to the Captains Ready Room. He rang the door chime and then waited... He heard a familiar voice beckon him in, he stepped in as the doors opened. He smiled as he saw Wolfe in his Captains pips. He walked up to the Captains desk and said "Security and Tactical Chief, Lieutenant Jonathan Janeway - Reporting for Duty, Sir." He cringed when he had to use his full name, he hated it and would probably never get used to it. He preferred people to call him Jono. (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1040) Upon hearing the chime at his door, Edward walked Alosar to the door. "I'm sure there is a great deal you have to work on in your offices. If I need you for anything I'll call upon you. Right now, please start going over personnel files and flag anything you think I should specifically look at. Keep it manageable however and realistic. You are dismissed Lieutenant." (reply Alosar iyw) When the door opened, Edward watched as Janeway and Alosar passed each other. "Security and Tactical Chief, Lieutenant Jonathan Janeway - Reporting for Duty, Sir," Janeway stated. Edward let the door slide shut as Alosar left before addressing his TAC/SC. "So Jono, how are you finding the Champlain?" asked Edward smiling and sitting back down, "Have a seat." (reply Jono) "I'd highly suggest that you acquaint yourself with the... firepower... this vessel employs. Holodeck simulations will work. Hopefully we'll have an assistant or two for you relatively soon. You'll find the Champlain a bit different from the Nimitz I think. I find it interesting to be on this ship. I've now been on the three main flagship models for the Federation that have been employed over the last 100 years. Some things haven't changed much, other things... well, the changes are vast," stated Edward grinning again. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain - Ready Room - Counselor - Lt. Alosar- 1042) The door chime sounded as the counselor and the captain were finishing. Wolfe moved almost imperceptibly faster as he led Alosar to the door. "I'm sure there is a great deal you have to work on in your offices," he said. "If I need you for anything I'll call upon you. Right now, please start going over personnel files and flag anything you think I should specifically look at. Keep it manageable however and realistic. You are dismissed Lieutenant." Alosar nodded, grateful that the captain did not offer to shake his hand. "Thank you Captain. I shall have a report for you on my preliminary findins as soon as possible." The door opened. As Alosar stepped out of the Ready Room he noted the man about to enter. A Lieutenant in security, perhaps even the security chief, however, that would be speculation. He nodded to the man as he left and stood on the bridge as the door closed. Looking around, he watched the bustle of activity. This seemed like a strong center of activity, and he decided that Wolfe was strong enough to control it. He went over to an interface station and touched the panel. "Computer, show me the counselors offices." Once he was armed with the information he needed, he set off to explore the ship and find his office. (posted by Al Muir) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – SC/TAC – Lieutenant Jono Janeway – 1044) "So Jono, how are you finding the Champlain?" asked Edward smiling and sitting back down, "Have a seat." Jono nodded and took the seat graciously. "Thanks," He mumbled under his breath. "Well to be honest, She's big Sir. Bigger than anything I've ever served on... Other than that, I'm not sure... I've only just come on board" Jono said smiling "I'd highly suggest that you acquaint yourself with the... firepower... this vessel employs. Holodeck simulations will work. I've already been looking over the Specs of this beauty" Jono said as he tapped on the side of Edwards desk, meaning the ship. "I think its gonna be more of a challenge to find my way around than anything." Jono smiled again, ~More Holodeck SIMMs?~ Jono thought, he had been running quite a lot of them in previous missions. He found them useful, and thought he'd set one up before they leave. "Also. I don’t think I ever said Congratulations on the Promotion, Captain. Hopefully you've recovered from Geneva?" Jono added in an afterthought, he wondered if the Captain had fully recovered from his experience on Geneva.. (Reply Wolfe) Jono nodded, "Well it was an experience." Jono noted, smiling... ~Hopefully one I'll not have to go through again...~ Jono thought, although he didn’t say it. "Are we sure that the Champlain will be ready for the launch date?" Jono then said adding a little more curiosity to their conversation, "It just seems like there's still a lot to be done, in such little time" (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1048) Edward nodded at Janeway as he talked about some of his concerns with the vessel. It was hardly surprising, the ship was different in a lot of different ways in terms of systems and sub-systems. He was sure Jono would cope. He was sure they'd all cope. "Also. I don’t think I ever said Congratulations on the Promotion, Captain. Hopefully you've recovered from Geneva?" Jono added in an afterthought. Edward scrutinized the face of the Lieutenant for a second. "Thanks for the congratulations. I was given a clean bill of health from the Med Centre on Geneva. I was feeling a bit tired for a few days, but I have a week before launch, so with any luck I'll be back at 100% soon. I have to check in with our Acting CMO though just as a precaution. You should do the same at some point. All of our medical records are going to have to be updated." Jono nodded, "Well it was an experience." Jono noted, smiling. "Are we sure that the Champlain will be ready for the launch date?" Jono then said adding a little more curiosity to their conversation, "It just seems like there's still a lot to be done, in such little time" "I'm being assured that its going to be fine. As long as we keep out of the way of Engineering and let everyone else do their jobs in readying their departments, I don't see why we won't be able to do this. Its just going to take some steady work. Don't forget to check out your offices and make sure everything is stocked and up to specs. You'll probably have to check weapons lockers and those kinds of things. I don't know what they have us set up with. Let me know if you need anything." With that, Edward began to rise to see Jono to the door. He hated rushing anyone out, but at the moment he had a lot of people to see in rapid succession and a lot of work to coordinate. (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain - Main Bridge - SC/TAC - Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1055) Jono moved over to the Tactical station, he had to get used to it. He dismissed the young officer at the station with a smile and a nod. He moved onto it and began to feel his way around. He opened some files and then began putting his access codes into the system. It wasn’t a hard thing to do, but a necessary one. If he were to be the Chief of Security/Tactical he would need his authorization codes working... He pondered on what the CO had said about assistants... He had been re-assigned here as soon as some TAC/Sec Assistants came into the picture on the Nimitz... It would be his luck that he wouldn't get anyone... It didn’t matter really, just meant more work for him... (Posted by Jono) (USS Champlain - Main Bridge - SC/TAC - Lieutenant Jono Janeway - 1056) Jono looked down at the TAC Console. He looked around the bridge, there were several engineering teams assisting in helping make the bridge. She wondered around, careful not to get in anybody's way... He looked at the CO's Chair, the urge to sit in it was great... So he turned away and instead looked at the massive viewscreen. Outside he could see dry- dock, and several crane arms leading from the support stations onto the Champlain. He then once again wondered if the ship would be ready for the launch date. He returned to the TAC Console, and then decided he should check up on his office. He would need it exactly how he wanted it by the launch date. He headed for one of the operational turbolifts and entered it. "Deck 15" Janeway said, and the turbolift sprang to life. (Posted by Jono) (Starbase Geneva – Docking Bays – Acting CMO – Lieutenant Mor'rel – 1100) Mor'rel walked away from the transport ship he had arrived on quickly. The odour still caught in his nostrils. He was used to having to deal with horrid smells, tastes and sights in his job as Triage Chief on the USS Boudicca, but he was NOT used to having to be cooped up with constant and steady smells of those types without cleaning being done. Mor'rel found it acceptable that his new ship would be a Galaxy Class vessel. They were well known for their ability to clean up after themselves. After going through station customs, and dealing with an odd and slightly annoying human named Ortez, Mor'rel made arrangements for transporting his personal effects and supplies to the USS Champlain. The next step, of course, was to enact his own transfer aboard the vessel. With that thought in mind, he walked towards the transporter pads and handed one of the operators on duty his orders. The door was locked - understandably. "Computer Un-lock SC/TAC's Office door, Authorisation Security/Tactical Chief Janeway Alpha Pie Alpha 99753" The door sprang open to admit Jono to a rather roomier office than he was used to. Back on the Nimitz the office didn’t compare to this one, it was much bigger... And looked like it was designed to fit enough people in for a staff briefing. He wondered in looking around and around... He stopped infront of his desk... He shook his head... ~Time to liven his office up a little bit...~ Jono turned and then went to work... I would find it more logical to begin with quarters, ensure my belongings were transported to the Sickbay and then traverse to your location. Is this acceptable?" Mor'rel did not see the point in presenting himself immediately. They had 7 Earth standard days before they left the station and was sure that the Captain had more pressing matters on his mind. He knew he did. =^=That will be fine Doctor. Just let me know when you intend to stop in. I get the feeling things are going to be busy for the next while.=^= "Understood Captain. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Weaver – Bridge – COUNS - Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1128) “She's a beauty, ain't she?” The voice broke in on Ensign Rhinehart's thoughts. He turned sideways and regarded the speaker, one Captain Boswell, the man in tentative command of this Mediterranean class freighter. Over the past three weeks Rhinehart had developed a sort of companionable hostility towards the man. “She certainly is that, captain,” Rhinehart replied, crisply, returning his gaze to the USS Champlain hanging in the centre of the view screen, his thoughtful contemplation of her graceful, flowing lines shot to ruins. He sighed gently. It wasn't that he actually disliked the man, or doubted his skill... he just didn't see that he had any business running a Starfleet vessel, not even a cargo hauler like the Weaver. He was undisciplined, scruffy, coarse and generally noisome. If there was anything beside the Starfleet COM badge to divide him from the thousands of ratty freelance spacers laundering their dirty credits in dingy bars and nightclubs on countless worlds and orbital stations at that precise moment, Rhinehart couldn't spot it. “Should be comin' up on her in 'bout twenny minutes, young blood. You best be gettin' ready,” Boswell said. Rhinehart smiled wanly. He'd be glad when this journey was at an end. He'd barely had time to shoot a message to his mother to tell her the great news about his graduation from the Academy before he was ushered off-world, almost exactly one standard month ago, to embark on the next stage of his glamourous Starfleet career. First it had been a short shuttle ride up to one of Earth's numerous orbital platforms. From there he had been met by a garbage scow carrying waste to the outer reaches of the Sol system. The sense of pride and achievement he harboured was matched only by the thrill of adventure. This was the furthest from Earth he had ever travelled – and he was going a lot further still. He spent hours at a time at the ship's forward view ports, lost in contemplation as he gazed upon the stars that were his new home. The cramped and stinking ship had been barely capable of warp, and shuddered so badly under deceleration that Rhinehart feared he might never see his first assignment as a commissioned officer. But not even that had managed to dampen his enthusiasm for this new adventure. Boswell had managed that all by himself. The garbage scow had made a slight detour, dropping him at Jupiter Station, where he awaited passage to the Beta Quadrant aboard a Starfleet freighter, the USS Weaver. Boswell hadn't made the best of impressions upon Rhinehart, and things had taken a definite southward-turn when he told the freighter captain that he was joining the Champlain's counselling team. Boswell had barely suppressed a belly laugh, transmuting it to a scornful snigger instead. “Pardon me, son. I ain't got much time for that psycho-babble stuff. You ask me, any man flying about up here already got a few screws loose,” he chuckled, clapping the young ensign on the back as he ushered him aboard. Things had been strained since then. The ship was practically automated, requiring barely any human supervision whatsoever to fly. The crew consisted solely of Captain Boswell, as well as a swarthy Andorian chief engineer (who Rhinehart suspected was a little too fond of Alvanian brandy) and an unfortunate young Vulcan male who did pretty much everything else around the ship. As much as he could, Rhinehart had remained in his room - reading, updating his log, writing letters to his mother and admiring the single black pip on his immaculate collar in the mirror. Try as he might to keep himself to himself, however, he hadn't been able to avoid the others at mealtimes. Meals were taken in an old-fashioned mess that doubled as the ship's recreational facility and briefing room. There he had to endure Boswell's interminable wisecracks and dubious personal hygiene, sharing surreptitious and commiserating glances with the Vulcan. More than once, in idle moments, he'd wondered what the penalty would be for getting into the craft's one and only lifeboat, firing it off and waiting to be picked up. But over the past few weeks, from somewhere, Rhinehart had managed to find a grudging tolerance for Boswell. He represented something, Rhinehart came to realise – the freedom of space faring humanity. Despite his opinion of the captain, the young ensign had found himself listening with rapt attention to Boswell's tales of high adventure in his younger days, and, to his amazement, he discovered that Boswell had requested his current post. For some reason, Starfleet had honoured his wish. He learned much to give him pause as he tossed and turned in his hard, narrow bunk at night, and while he still considered the captain an embarrassment to the uniform, he saw that it had not always been so. Now, as the ship made its final approach on the Champlain's shuttle bay, he felt like he'd already gained years of valuable insight into shipboard life. The size of the refitted Galaxy-class vessel was really something. Several times, Rhinehart thought they must be about to hit the side of the ship, but it just kept coming and coming, looming larger and larger on the view screen. The frustration of his journey was forgotten in that moment, the pride surging back into his throat as the freighter, dwarfed by the larger craft, drew alongside the Champlain, ready to beam its supplies aboard. “Well, ensign, we'd better get you beamed over. It's been a pleasure flying with you,” said Captain Boswell. “Have a good voyage, son.” Rhinehart shook the captain's offered hand with only a moment's hesitation. “You too, sir,” he replied. He meant it, as well... mostly. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Transporter Room One – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1156) Within a few moments, he felt the tingle of rematerialisation as his molecules reassembled themselves. It wasn't a totally unfamiliar feeling – he'd travelled that way before – but he wasn't exactly used to it either. He nodded his thanks to the transporter chief, and tapped his COM badge. =^=Ensign Olen Rhinehart to Captain Wolfe. Requesting permission to come aboard, sir.=^= (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1158) Edward had spent the last half hour looking at their course path and projected mission. The files that he was going over were more than a little disquieting. It was little wonder that they were sending this ship in that area of space, and even less wonder that the weapons and defenses had been beefed up as much as they had been. He sighed wondering if an untried crew would be ready for the problems that lie ahead. He tapped the course again, looking for an area, a flight path, that might be safer. None looked particularly promising. Edward sighed when his comm badge went off. =^=Ensign Olen Rhinehart to Captain Wolfe. Requesting permission to come aboard, sir.=^= "Absolutely Ensign, permission granted. Please make your way to my office once you get here. Wolfe out," stated Edward closing the channel. He had read Rhinehart's file and hoped that this counsellor would provide a 'human side' to counselling staff. He was certain that Alosar was stuffed full of all the technical jargon and this man should be able to balance out the team and provide a more emotional foil to him. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain – Transporter Room One – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1159) Rhinehart cast a tentative glance into the gloom of the transporter suite, trying to spot the way out. He wondered vaguely why the room's lighting was so subdued, before the transporter chief noticed his slight confusion. The chief jerked a thumb towards the door. “That way, ensign. Turn right and you'll find the turbolifts at the end of the corridor,” he said through a slight smile. “Ah, thank you very much, sir,” said Rhinehart, stepping off the transporter pad. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Deck six corridor – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1200) Walking out into the corridor, Rhinehart blinked as his eyes grew accustomed to the bright, welcoming light. It was his first time aboard a ship this size, and he was wary of losing his bearings. Mindful of the transporter chief's directions, he moved off down the corridor and soon arrived at the turbolifts. He jabbed the call button and was rewarded with a sharp negative tone. “This lift is currently out of service,” came the soft, feminine tone of the ship's computer. Rhinehart glanced up at the ceiling, then down at his feet, slightly embarrassed despite being the only person in the vicinity. He sidestepped smartly to another lift shaft and pressed the button. This time, he heard a positive chirp and the lift arrived within seconds, the doors swooshing apart. He stepped through them and, with no small sense of achievement, stated: “Bridge.” (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Bridge – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1203) Rhinehart stepped out of the lift and onto the spacious bridge of the Galaxy-class vessel. The contrast between the Champlain and the Weaver could hardly be starker. He walked out slowly, catching a glimpse of a dark-haired man at what he would later discover was the tactical console. He looked absorbed in his task, so Rhinehart elected to make his introduction later. Unheeded by the numerous crew members performing maintenance work on the various bridge stations, he continued down the ramp and onto the bridge itself, glancing around for the captain's office. Even though he was required to report in, he couldn't prevent himself from stopping to regard the vista upon the huge forward viewscreen with some sense of wonder. He hoped he would spend plenty of time sitting before that screen. His eye naturally fell on the door to the left of the screen. This must be it. All of a sudden, he was overcome by a wash of self-doubt that he only quieted by repeatedly reminding himself that his place on this ship was bought and paid for with four hard years of study and self-sacrifice. Finally, he tapped the panel and waited until the door slid open. He stepped through and came stiffly to attention, his nerves written all over his face. He was feeling decidedly unsteady all of a sudden. “Cadet – I mean Ensign Olen Rhinehart, reporting for duty,” he said, looking at anything but the man behind the desk. “Uh... sir,” he added, inwardly admonishing himself for the omission. (posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1204) Rhinehart finally met the captain's eyes as he accepted the invitation to sit. Younger than he'd anticipated... he seemed affable enough, but there was no doubt in Rhinehart's mind that the man possessed a steely will. “So, what do you think of the Champlain so far?” the captain asked. Rhinehart took a moment to collect himself. Then he took another moment. His nerves were still jangling. Perfectly normal, he told himself, this is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. “Ah... big. She's very... big, sir,” replied Rhinehart, groping for words. “I've never seen a ship this... big before.” He paused momentarily before adding: “I did notice one of the turbolifts was non-functional, sir.” The captain nodded. "Currently, Engineering is working pretty hard to get us ready for our launch date, Stardate 2407.03.03. The other counsellor, Lieutenant Alosar, is currently on board. You'll have to meet him at some point. He's... he's a Vulcan. It should be an interesting experience for you." Rhinehart's curiosity was piqued. His fingers stole up to his chin, gently tugging on the short beard as he turned the captain's words over in his mind. “A Vulcan... that's fascinating,” he said. “I've always found a great deal of wisdom in the Vulcans' philosophical teachings, although I find their overall outlook on life somewhat... austere,” he offered. “I have gotten to know very few individual Vulcans, captain, so I look forward to working with Lt Alosar immensely.” "So, a few things for the first week aboard,” replied Captain Wolfe in a business-like tone. “I want you to meet with Alosar and you both have to go over crew files... anything that raises any red flags needs to be passed on to me. I also want you and he to do some First Contact simulations. I know you took the standard courses as its part of Counsellor training, but for our extended mission, you'll need to keep current on them and try various potentialities," stated Edward, "Any questions so far?" Rhinehart nodded, a slight jolt of anticipation settling over him. He couldn't wait to get stuck into his work. “Just a couple, Captain,” said Rhinehart, in response to the captain's question, contemplating his words for a moment. “What is our expected crew complement to be?” (Reply Wolfe) “I see,” replied Rhinehart, nodding. “And I presume I am going to be acting as Lt Alosar's assistant, sir?” (Reply Wolfe) Rhinehart absorbed the captain's answer matter-of-factly, nodding his head gently. His eyes flicked to the leading edge of the captain's desk momentarily. “I must admit I'm rather curious about the nature of our mission, sir. Academy scuttlebutt, for what it's worth, had it that the fleet's newest vessel is configured for exploration rather than combat. Is there anything Lt Alosar or myself should know at this stage about what we may come up against on our voyage, sir? Anything at all?” (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1205) While waiting for his new counsellor to arrive, Edward had taken the liberty of calling up his personnel file. Nodding as he looked it over, Edward heard his door chime sound and pressed the entrance button. "Enter!" he called out. Seconds later, a young man, fairly short and stocky, with brown hair walked in. “Cadet – I mean Ensign Olen Rhinehart, reporting for duty,” he said, as he glanced nervously around the room. “Uh... sir,” he added almost as an afterthought. Edward fought to suppress a chuckle as he looked at Rhinehart. Was he, himself, ever this green? ~Probably...~ "Mr. Rhinehart, welcome aboard. Please, have a seat," stated Edward grinning, "So, what do you think of the Champlain so far?" (Reply Rhinehart) Edward nodded, "Currently, Engineering is working pretty hard to get us ready for our launch date, Stardate 2407.03.03. (Reply Rhinehart) "So, a few things for the first week aboard. I want you to meet with Alosar and you both have to go over crew files... anything that raises any red flags needs to be passed on to me. I also want you and he to do some First Contact simulations. I know you took the standard courses as its part of Counsellor training, but for our extended mission, you'll need to keep current on them and try various potentialities," stated Edward, "Any questions so far?" (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1209) Edward scrutinized his new officer for a second, listening carefully to his responses, grinning slightly as he did. This was going to be an interesting person to work with. “Just a couple, Captain,” said Rhinehart. “What is our expected crew complement to be?” "This vessel has a maximum crew compliment of 1012 people, and that is what we're expecting. Approximately 300 of them are on board at the moment, and more are arriving by the minute," replied Edward grinning. ~Huge crew... wonder how he thinks about taking care of 506 people all by his lonesome.~ “I see,” replied Rhinehart, nodding. “And I presume I am going to be acting as Lt Alosar's assistant, sir?” "Ummm... assistant? Not so much... he is more of a ranking peer. You'll figure out some way to divide the caseload so its manageable for both of you. Of course, I do expect you to coordinate with him as he does have more experience than you do and can provide a great deal of direction. I, however, do not see the point in assigning a chief of that department yet, unless a problem ensues. I will, however, make a decision at a later date," replied Edward. It was true. Their work was different than other departments. Rank could carry the priviledge of the paperwork for now, but for the most part, he needed them meeting crew independently and working collaboratively. Anything at all?” asked the Ensign. Edward found the curiosity in his eyes intriguing. He felt his own eyes twinkle with excitement. "I'm still assessing the early mission data for the current, specific mission. You'll be fully apprised at the first senior staff meeting which will take place 48 hours before we leave. However, we are travelling to the Beta Quadrant and will eventually be entering some of the less explored regions of space. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I'd rather not release too much until I know for sure exactly what we're dealing with, I'm sure you understand," replied Edward, "Anything else Ensign?" (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – COUNS – Ensign (JG) Olen Rhinehart – 1211) Rhinehart nodded his understanding at the captain's scant description of their mission. He'd hoped to glean some valuable tidbits to mull over ahead of the staff briefing, but no matter. “Anything else Ensign?” asked the captain. “No, sir, that's all the questions I had. Thank you for your candour,” replied Rhinehart. He regarded the captain for a few seconds. He seemed like an excellent CO, the counsellor reflected. Smart, approachable and friendly, yet with an indomitable authority. Rhinehart suspected the man had seen a lot in his relatively few years. Rhinehart, as one who himself had weathered trauma, felt an immediate bond of empathy with the man. He wondered if he would be talking to him in a professional capacity before much longer. One thing was for sure, he expected the voyage to be interesting. He was enormously pleased at the working relationship he was expected to have with Lt Alosar. 'Ranking peer', indeed. It seemed like a huge responsibility had been placed upon his shoulders, and while the sensation of a headfirst plunge into the deep end was disquieting in a sense, the adrenaline rush as he comprehended the vast nature of his job was like nothing else. Naturally, he would follow the Vulcan's direction and leadership, but such autonomy for an ensign fresh out of the academy seemed like a great honour to Rhinehart. He relished the prospect. “With your permission, sir, I'll get to work,” said the counsellor. “Will I find the counsellor's offices in the vicinity of sickbay, captain? Oh, and who do I need to see about a berth, sir?” (Reply Wolfe) With that, the counsellor stood and snapped to attention, before executing a none-too- shabby about-face and walking from the ready room. Counsellor Rhinehart. Had a nice ring to it, he thought. (Posted by Noel) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1213) Edward watched, suppressing a grin, as Rhinehart took everything in. He could see that the young man was more than a little excited, perhaps a little scared too. These things were normal. “With your permission, sir, I'll get to work,” said the counsellor. “Will I find the counsellor's offices in the vicinity of sickbay, captain? Oh, and who do I need to see about a berth, sir?” "The counsellor's offices are on deck 12 with Sickbay. Any time you need to find someplace, you can just ask aloud. Watch. Computer, location and pathway to Counselling Offices," Edward stated aloud. [Counselling Offices are on deck 12. Follow the blue light along the wall to Counselling Offices on deck 12.] the computer intoned. (Reply Rhinehart iyw) "As for your quarters... this isn't the Academy, you get officer's quarters all to yourself... see the Quartermaster on deck six, just off of transporter room one. He'll set you up with something either on deck two or deck three," replied Edward nodding, "Have a good day and dismissed." With that, the counsellor stood and snapped to attention, before executing a none-too- shabby about-face and walking from the ready room. Edward smiled in spite of himself. So formal, they always came out of the Academy so formal. He was interested to see what the next few months would bring. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain – Transporter Room 1 – Science Officer – Professor d'Kla's'turr – 1312) d'Kla materialized on the transporter padd and looked around. He saw the immediate, shocked look of the transporter chief begin to fade into a more impassive mask and did what he could not to laugh. His visage had always had that effect on humans especially, and most other races. Years of dilithium exposure on his homeworld, had created several mutations on his race and the need for his large breathing apparatus. The sight was immediately disconcerting to most other races. d'Kla atpped his comm badge. "Professsssor d'Klaa'sssss'turr requesting permission to come aboard," d'Klar hissed, his voice affected by the apparatus. =^=Welcome aboard Professor. I look forward to meeting you,=^= replied the newly minted Captain Wolfe. "I will be there directly Ssssir," replied d'Klar. (Posted by Jeff) (Starbase Geneva-restaurant- Science Officer- Ensign JG Derrick LaQua- 1334) LaQua sat in the restaurant in Starbase Geneva and thought over the visit with his family, and the trip to here as he ate. His father and sister was very proud of him, but his brother was unimpressed. The shuttle ride to Starbase Geneva was very uneventfull. He continued thinking about his brother and his reaction to him being home.He didn't see much of his brother while visiting and he felt saddened by that." He was avoiding me.He is upset i chose not to stay and be a wine master," said LaQua to himself low to where other couldn't hear it. LaQua wiped a single tear from his left cheek and went on eating. Getting lost in his thoughts he finished his meal and grabbed his bags and walked to the transporter room and transported over to the ship. (Posted by John) (USS Champlain - Bridge - Science Officer - Professor d'Kla's'turr - 1344) d'Kla exited the meeting with the Captain. It had gone well. d'Kla was still somewhat surprised at the lack of the Captain's reaction. Had he have known that Wolfe had viewed a personnel file on him, along with a visual representation, beforehand and readied himself for what he'd see, d'Kla might not have been as impressed. d'Kla was suprised that no Chief or Acting Chief had been named yet in his department. d'Kla knew that his advanced rank, for the time being, would give him the position but supposed the Captain was keeping his options open. In the end, the choice was... interesting. d'Kla was more interested in meeting the Ensign coming aboard who was also assigned to sciences and apparently had abilities in xenobiology, La Qua was his name apparently. d'Kla walked off the bridge, much to the relief of several of the engineers working on it and started for the science laboratories to assess them for the departmental needs. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain – Transporter Room 1 – Science Officer- Ensign JG LaQua- 1346) LaQua materialized on the transporter padd and smiled. As he stepped off the transported pad he glanced at the transporter chief and nodded. He asked where he could find the Captain and then proceeded to walk to his quarters to drop off his bags. After asking several people where his room was he finally got there and dropped off his belongings. He combed his hair and straightened up his uniform and went to the bridge. He went to the ready room door and as it slided open he entered. Standing at attention he said, "Ensign JG Derrick LaQua reporting for duty Sir." (Posted John Merriott) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1355) Edward had been alerted to the new science officer's boarding as soon as he had. However, this Ensign LaQua had not asked for permission to board as was proper protocol before stepping on to the ship. He was certain that LaQua was nervous and for that reason he was willing to overlook the breach in protocol. He was less willing to overlook the fact that the Ensign had let himself into his Ready Room without pressing the doorchime first. As the young man walked in Edward was already at his feet. "Ensign JG Derrick LaQua reporting for duty Sir." "I see Mr. LaQua, and did they teach you not to ask permission before boarding a Starfleet Vessel at the Academy, Mr. LaQua? Or to enter offices without pressing doorchimes, Mr. LaQua? Maybe you were ill that day? Please, from now on, make sure you follow proper protocols. I know you're nervous, however I still demand a certain amount of decorum from my my officers. What if you had walked into a private meeting?" Edward asked calmly, showing a hint of annoyance, but not showing anything approaching anger. (Reply LaQua) "Now, Ensign, we're going to start over and you're going to follow protocol and etiquette from this time on. Professor d'Kla's'turr is already on board and in the sciences department. Despite the fact that I have not declared a Chief Science Officer at this point, he has a rank of Lieutenant which makes him ranking officer. I need the Xenobiology lab prepped and ready for our journy. I also need you to coordinate directly with Professor d'Kla's'turr. I must warn you that Professor d'Kla's'turr is a Coridanite and his appearance can be slightly disquieting. You might want to ready yourself for it," stated Edward and then pausing for questions or comments. (Reply LaQua iyw) "Full mission details will be released in a few more days. For now, just ready the department. Do you have any questions?" asked Edward. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – Science Officer – Ensign JG Derrick LaQua – 1357) The Captain stood there and reminded him, "Please, from now on, make sure you follow proper protocols. I know you're nervous, however I still demand a certain amount of decorum from my my officers. What if you had walked into a private meeting?" LaQua thought to himself, ~Wounderful, I so wanted to impress the Captain and now I've messed up twice already.~ LaQua replied, "I am very sorry Sir it will not happen again. But I am very nervous, still that is no excuse." I need the Xenobiology lab prepped and ready for our journey. I also need you to coordinate directly with Professor d'Kla's'turr. I must warn you that Professor d'Kla's'turr is a Coridanite and his appearance can be slightly disquieting. You might want to ready yourself for it." said the Captain and paused. LaQua said, "Happy to get to work on the lab Sir and looking forward to meeting the Professor." "Full mission details will be released in a few more days. For now, just ready the department. Do you have any questions?" LaQua asked, "Sir do you think my xenoarcheology talent might come into play also?" (Posted John Merriott) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1400) Edward sat back and watched as the Ensign regained his composure. He was sure that LaQua would be fine, he just had to find his 'feet' as it were. The ship, the assignment, the crew, all awe inspiring and slightly frightening. LaQua asked, "Sir, do you think my xenoarcheology talent might come into play also?" Edward looked at him and nodded, "It’s always a possibility. I'm sure you have many other talents as well to lend to the science department. I can honestly say, however, that the talents of an archaeologist will come in handy. Once I fully analyse the mission data and release it to the staff you'll understand why. At this point, I would advise you to see the Quartermaster to have your quarters assigned and then you should check in with the Professor. The importance at this point is getting your systems up and running and your laboratories inventoried and stocked." (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – Science Officer – Ensign JG Derrick LaQua – 1402) The Captain said, "I would advise you to see the Quartermaster to have your quarters assigned and then you should check in with the Professor. The importance at this point is getting your systems up and running and your laboratories inventoried and stocked." "Then Sir with your permission, I will leave and see the Quartermaster and then seek out the Professor." answered LaQua. He stood at attention and waited for the Captain to answer. (reply Wolfe) LaQua exited the ready room and walked across the bridge. He asked a crewman where the Quartermaster's office was and thanked him. He went to the turbo lift and was off to see about his room. (Posted by John) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – Science Officer – Ensign JG Derrick LaQua – 1412) LaQua put his gear down in his room and decided that he would unpack later. He needed to find the Professor and report to him. He went out of his room and looked around. He found out that science labs were on deck 15. He walked to the turbo lift and said, "Deck 15 please." While in the turbo lift he thought about what the Captain had said about the Professor. That he was a Coridanite which would be interesting and fun to serve with. He ran threw all his memories of what he knew about Coridanite's and their culture and prepared himself as the turbo lift doors opened. He walked to the door for the science lab's and stepped inside. "Professor d'Kla's'turr are you here Sir? I'm Ensign LaQua. Sir are you here?" asked LaQua. (Posted John Merriott) (USS Champlain – Transporter Room 1 – Science Officer – Professor d'Kla's'turr – 1421) Professor d'Kla's'turr had been working on calibrating one of the bioscanners for the last hour. The lateral field array had been knocked out of alignment by accident when a Worker Bee had tried to 'help'. d'Kla appreciated the work engineering did, but they often didn't appreciate the details that made science division work. The slight calibration variance would make a Klingon resemble an Acamarian. Close, but not close enough... especially if a transporter lock based on race was necessary... or a planetary scan was needed. So now, d'Kla was headfirst in a console working on the fine tuning. "Professor d'Kla's'turr are you here Sir? I'm Ensign LaQua. Sir are you here?" a voice called out. d'Kla's immediate response was to jolt upwards, causing himself to bang his head on the console casing. He swore in his native tongue. "Yesssssss... I am herrre," he hissed, "Who is therrrre?" d'Kla withdrew from the console, oblvious to the small cut he had recieved on the top of his head. His hand flew up to his breathing apparatus to ensure it was intact and working properly. He was relieved to see that it was. Soon, he was viewing a young human male. (Posted by Jeff) (USS Champlain – Ready Room – CO – Captain Edward Wolfe – 1742) Edward rubbed his eyes and grabbed for the next PADD. He had been at this for most of the day and was starting to feel more than a bit 'burnt out'. He knew he had to continue as the days before lauch were closing fast. Edward took a second to stretch and to get a cup of longjing tea before continuing his paperwork. As he sat down, his desk computer beeped the acknowledgement of an incoming message. Edward groaned at the intrustion. "Computer, access message," said Edward. The computer chimed acknowledgement and then the voice message began to play, =^=Hello Captain Wolfe, this is the Admiral's secretary. I noticed that you haven't scheduled your launch party yet so I took the liberty. Its booked into Ten Forward for Stardate 2407.02.25 at 2000 hours. Full dress of course. I hope that gives you enough time to get ready. Congratulations again.=^= then the screen went blank. ~Oh... lovely. Like I really have time to be crammed into a monkey suit to dance around for Geneva station brass and Command types. And as if I can get Ten Forward set up in time. What the heck am I going to do now?~ Edward thought. He knew that it was supposed to be an honour and that it would be a grave insult to cancel. Edward tapped his comm badge, "Wolfe to Janeway... help." (Reply Janeway) "You're not going to believe this... they scheduled a party in Ten Forward for tomorrow night... our launch party... full gala affair... 2000 hours... as if we have time..." Edward trailed off frustrated and more than a bit concerned. (Reply Janeway) Edward sighed, "I don't really want to pull any of you off anything, but Engineering is pretty crucial right now, same with OPs. Can't touch them. Grab Ensign Rhinehart and Ensign LaQua... and anyone else you can get your hands on that isn't busy setting up a department and get them cleaning up and setting up Ten Forward. I have NO IDEA who we're going to get to serve tomorrow night. I'll contact Geneva and see if they can spare some people to help out. Keep it tasteful and classy." (Posted by Jeff) [COMPILE ENDS]
