Cmdr Ben Soma - Day -2, 1547.5) Ben looked up as he heard the door open and footsteps approaching, it was Lanista. They had served together on the Dennison and the Mithrandir for a while, then they had both been ensigns. Things had changed over the past few years, he was now a Lieutenant Commander and the FO of the Rosenante. Lanista was a Lieutenant and the new CSO rather then an ACEO. She apparently sensed his unease, he should have expected nothing less from a Klingon. "So'maH," Lani' said, pronouncing his name as though it were an honorable tlhIngan monicker. "You are an exemplary officer. Show them that. While you may have them, you must never actually confess weaknesses. Your gholpu' ... opponents ... will use that to their advantage..." Ben met her gaze, he learned some time ago Klingon's liked it when you stood tall and didn't back down. "I assure you Lieutenant I'd never show weakness to an enemy, my training taught me the folly of that mistake." He said in confidence, Klingon's and Samurai had much in common. Honor was everything to both, to break it meant death. "You honor me with your words, high praise from an honorable warrior such as yourself tlha'nISta." Ben pronounced her proper name, though heavily accented no doubt. He hadn't had many opportunities to speak in Klingon, Klagth had engaged him speaking the language a few times on Axtis III. The doors once again opened as the senior staff began flooding in, the briefing would start shortly. The voice that lived in the back of her head laughed and finally replied. ~Oh yes you were. And all you said was 'Yes Sir and how high?~ Smiling to herself Josh turned to Lt Fraiser and Parker. "Would it be possible for you to work out of Mr Parker's office at present so that Lt O'Neill and I can work in the CMO's Office? If you can't we will find somewhere else to work, no problems." (Reply O'Neill) (Posted by Marilyn) --------------- (USS Rosenante - CMO's Office - Day -2 - ACEO Lt Eian O'Neill - Day -2 - 1706) "Well Lieutenant I hope you have come up with some good ideas regarding the Command Centre because I will be honest and say that it is not something I have ever had to think about before. The most I can come up with 'off the top of my head', so to speak, are communications and security. So if you have any other ideas then feel free to lay them on the table. I do think that the best place for the Command Centre would be Atlantis Station but since we have no idea yet if that will be available perhaps we need to also look at alternative sites as well," Caskie said. Eian had anticipated the doctor may not be as familiar with the concept of a command center. "I agree, Ma'am. The best place would be Atlantis Station, but we should look at alternative sites, too. I've prepared this PADD for you," he handed it to her, "which outlines the basic idea of a command center and what's required. Basically, the primary center of command, or CENTCOM, interfaces with anyone we have on the ground--troops, aid workers, medical personnel, etc. We track them and they all communicate to us. We communicate to the Rose. We'll probably end up giving the Rose a codename like MOTHERSHIP to confuse the Veil members who probably have never heard the term. CENTCOM coordinates with several other sites, which, if possible, shouldn't be in the same area as Atlantis Station. Unfortunately, it seems like the Veil has taken over the whole planet but the hotel, so we may be confined to the hotel. But if Captain Salid will allow it, we could establish CENTCOM BRAVO and CENTCOM CHARLIE sites in addition to the hotel's CENTCOM ALPHA site. If the Captain okays it, the BRAVO and CHARLIE sites will do the exact same thing as the ALPHA site but they'd have a skeleton crew and serve as temporary communications in the event of a strike against ALPHA. The most important thing for the BRAVO and CHARLIE sites is that they are well-received in the community. You remember that Counselor Davis reported that this operation is contingent upon the population's approval of either the Federation of the Veil. If the BETA and CHARLIE sites are part of relief camps that are set up around the planet, with the communications effort kept relatively secret, then we have a higher chance of success. CENTCOM will also serve as an armory, a dining area, and a shelter for any incoming or outgoing personnel. It will have to be restricted access for all civilians, and kept as separate from the refugee center as possible. It's a place where we can strategize our plans for the surface, hold meetings, share information...it's not the sort of place you'd want anyone who might not necessarily have our best interests in mind." He paused, and asked, "Do you have any questions or suggestions so far, Ma'am?" (reply Caskie) (posted by Morgan G) --------------- (USS Rosenante - Counselor's Office – aCMO Lt jg Tayla Fraiser - Day - 2 - 1712) "I think we should start with what Dr. Fraiser has to say," he said, nodding to Tayla, "since Lt. Jackson and I have a refugee camp to plan. I assume you'll need us to make accommodations for on-ground triage centers and beam-ups to the ship for medical treatment? And you'll need to continuously coordinate with us as far as medical supply shipments go. We'll need an organized inventory kept close at hand...I don't know if you want to assign personnel to that or handle it yourself..." Sighing, Tayla looked at the two men and began, “ Gentlemen, from what I understand of the problems on the planet, setting up a refugee camp maybe the last thing we can do. What you two need to concentrate on is the issue of triage and sorting out who can come up to the ship and when.” She leant forward and continued, “What you need to do is brush up on your triage knowledge and basic first aid. To that end I have prepared an easy to follow guide. It includes a guide for classifying the needs of the people down there ie who should come up first.” (Reply Jackson, Davis) “I know, I have already begun to put together an inventory of what we have and what we need to replicate before we get there. You will have everything you need from sickbay by the time we arrive. That I can promise you.” (Reply Davis, Jackson) “What I would like you both to do is send me hourly updates on the situation as it unfolds. That way I can amend the needs and the medicines and equipment to suit the situation.” Taking a moment, she rose and said, “Here, I'll leave you with these.” She placed the Padds she had been carrying on the table that Parker sat behind and said, “I need to go back to sickbay and check on the supplies we have. Gentlemen.” She turned and walked out of the room without a second look back. She couldn't. Being around anyone other than Parker, Caskie or Salid at that time was still terrifying to her. It took all her strength not to run back to her quarters. Once there, she walked through the doors and stood in the middle of the room and fought to get her breathing under control. Clenching nad unclenching her hands, she felt her body begin to shake. Falling to her knees, the enormity of the last few days hit Tayla all at once and she began to cry. Sanok, Day -2, 1927) After assigning the security drills to Ensign Signos, Sanok watched as an unusual grin appeared on her face. It seemed as though it were a mix of relief, and the thought of running the security personnel through the gauntlet. A light that wasn't there before, began to shine in her eyes. If that was the case, Sanok didn't mind his personnel facing tough drills. There was nothing more important than fighting for your life, and for the lives of those around you. "I might have a few ideas, sir," said Signos. "Give me to morning to get something put together, and I'll show you what I have planned." "That is not necessary, Ensign," said Sanok. "I trust that you will properly drill the personnel so they are at the peak of readiness if the ship is boarded." Though it was against his better judgment, in order to help Ensign Signos overcome the Lily persona, it was important to show her that he was beginning to trust her. There was no doubt that she wanted to serve and do her duty, and he knew she could. She just needed to demonstrate to his satisfaction, that she could keep Lily under control. He would not tolerate a repeat performance of her brutality on Asrai Prime. Signos turned to leave, but paused before doing so. "Sir, I'm sorry when last we spoke, I said some things that were out of line. Let's just say, my mind was not where it should of been, and I'm sorry for that." "I appreciate you saying that, Ensign. Since she had received the gorgeous yellow rose from Viskhard, she had wanted to repay him for his act of kindness. Now she had a night planned for him and knew that this may just be the thing to take his mind off the arrival of the new science chief. Although he hadn't said, she could tell that he was a little down at the arrival of this Klingon and, being with him, she took it upon herself to cheer him up. Smiling, she pressed her combadge and said, “Turner to Viskhard, report to my quarters for dinner.” (Reply Viskhard) It took her a moment to change into her only little black dress that she owned. This old thing is... well... I can change if you want?” Visk tilted his head, mock thinking, "No, I think it's just right, for now." Taking his hand, she guided him to his seat and said, “I wanted to thank you for the Rose. It was so lovely. My favourite flower and you guessed right.” Her hand in his still sent a shiver up his spine, but at least now it was a pleasant one. He allowed himself to be seated. "I'm happy you liked it." “Of course I did. One thing to learn about women is that we always love flowers.” She walked back to the hot plate and began to prepare the starter. Visk leaned his elbows on the table and propped his head up, watching her as she moved about, "I'll be sure to put that in my notes. What's for dinner?" A smile washed over her face as she said, “What ever you like.” Visk smiled at that, he held her gaze for a moment, considering the possibilities. Chuckling a little, he brought up the now well known Middle-Earth program they'd started sharing more often, "If you make me eat lembas bread I will put up a protest, but what did you have in mind?" Laughing, she replied, “Seriously, I have a nice pasta dish ready to go but firstly, Smoked salmon and crayfish with lettuce.” Fixing the starter, she walked to the table and placed it infront of him. After a split second, she leant down and kissed him softly on the cheek. Before she could pull away, Viskhard's hand came up and pulled her over, returning the kiss with a soft one to her lips. He let her go so that she could get her plate before picking up his fork. Smiling, she touched her lips gently and then sat down opposite him and said, "You really are learning fast." There was something different about Blake that Visk couldn't quite put his scientific mind to figuring out, but he could be extremely patient. He thought he'd try a round-about approach. "I'm happy I guessed the right kind of flower, but I get the feeling I'm going to be repaying you for this evening." Grinning, she said, "Maybe. But there is an ulterior motive to this evening." Visk savoured the flavour of the crayfish and swallowed before continuing, "Oh? What's that?" Placing her fork down, she said, "I know about what happened with your position and I wanted to make sure you were okay." Visk's eyes tinged slightly violet, showing his embarassement, but he nodded. "I knew the job was temporary, but thank you. I'm much more suited to actual science rather than departmental paperwork." "That and, there was something else." Sighing, she looked into his eyes and said, "I've been thinking about my family recently. Since we last talked. There's things that I should explain, things that you need to know if we're ....." She stopped, letting that sentence hang in the air. His heart stopped for a second as he wondered if she felt the same as he did. He finished her sentence after a moment, careful to be much more vague than he would like "...to continue." She nodded and said, "I would like that and that's why I need to tell you the truth about me and my family." Visk nodded slowly, putting down his fork. "I'll listen as long as you want to talk." She sighed and said, "I told you that my family lived in a commune. Well that much was true. But they don't any more." "Oh?" Visk stayed relatively quiet, he had the thought that this was requiring much courage from Blake. "They, well to put it more correctly, the leader of the commune was arrested and now is in a high security facility." He digested this information slowly, and it prompted him to ask, "But you weren't there?" Taking a breath, she said, "I .... I knew what was going on, what was to be expected of me and that's why I left." His eyes went a pale lavender, showing his concern and near fear. He knew he had to ask, but wasn't sure if he would like the answer. "What was expected of you?" She closed her eyes for a moment and walked to the window of her living area and sighed. It really was the first time she had spoken about this to someone. Viskhard watched her retreat, he stayed where he was, but reached out to her in a word, "Blake..." Taking a breath, she turned back and said, "I was to, well.... it was expected of me to be one of his....." The words caught in her throat and a tear ran down her face. His eyes darkened, he could see where this was headed and he had been right - he didn't like it. He got up and went over to her, stopping close but not too close. He held out his hand silently. She took his hand and gripped it, tightly. She knew that she was shaking a little and scared. "You left, don't ever forget how much strength that takes." Visk spoke softly. "But it cost me my family." She said and stepped into him. Sighing heavily, she rested her head on his shoulder and said, "It cost me my life." He wrapped his arms around her, stroking her hair, "You gained a new life out of it too." "Now you understand why I left and why I don't talk to my family. You don't think I'm damaged goods, that you still want to be with me?" Visk closed his own eyes as he breathed in her scent. His voice barely a whisper he spoke simply, "More than ever." Visk's mind was going a mile a minute and he couldn't help but think to himself, ~Why do I get the sense this is a permanent arrangement?~ Feeling so at peace with him, she asked, "You don't think any less of me?" Visk shook his head, "What is done is done. I will never think that of you." She looked up at him and said, "How did I get to be this lucky?" Visk smiled. "I think it's me who's the lucky one," he muttered as he stared out at the stars. She reached up and, gently, placed a hand on his face and said, "Would it be wrong of me to say that I think I'm in love?" Startled out of his reverie, he looked deep into her eyes. "No, I don't think so." Visk held her close as he spoke words he'd been wanting to say but hadn't had the courage to say until now, "Blake Turner, I love you." He leaned down and kissed her deeply, the world around melting into oblivion. It was probably a coincidence, but he decided to check anyway. "Interesting." Sanok tapped his comm badge. =^=Ensign Blake Turner, this is Lieutenant Sanok. Please report to my office immediately.=^= While waiting for th ensign to arrive, he resumed his work. Having heard the call, Blake had responded immediately and soon found herself outside Sanok's office. A million thoughts were running through her mind as to what he could have wanted. ~This is probably something to do with Viskhard~ she thought to herself as she walked through the doors and said, "Ensign Turner, reporting as ordered, sir." When the ensign arrived, Sanok motioned for her to have a seat. “Sir, what's this about?” Blake asked. In typical Vulcan fashion, Sanok got right to the point. "Ensign, while preparing for the BA4 mission, I was considering placing you on one of the security details guarding the refugee camp that is going to be set up; you have done good work since you came on board. However, I discovered something." He handed her a PADD. "Ensign, your father's cousin, Joanne Turner, is the Federation ambassador to Beta Aquillia IV. As of right now, she is listed as missing." Blake's heart jumped into her mouth as she took the PADD from Sanok and read. “I... Oh, god.” It had been many years since she'd thought of her family and now, this. Reading the file, she remembered her father talking about Joanne and her job. That was the first thing that they had said when she had told them that she wanted to leave. Now, here it was, back in her mind again. Taking a breath, she handed the PADD back to Sanok and said, softly, “I never knew.... I don't talk to my family, so I didn't know. Is she...?” She couldn't bring herself to say the words that were in her mind at that point. Right now, all she wanted to do was find her and talk to her. Sanok understood how she felt. When he had lived with his emotions, he had lost friends in the war. It never felt good inside when that happened. "Ensign, information coming out of BA4 has been extremely limited, so we don't know where any Federation personnel are. The Veil of the Sky needs leverage to negotiate with Captain Salid when we arrive, so it is most logical that all our people are alive. It is also possible that many escaped capture. There is cause to have hope." She knew he was speaking the truth, but it didn't help much. Sighing, she wiped her eyes and said, “Sir, I have to go down to the surface. I can't stay up here knowing she's down there, enduring god only knows what. She's the only family I have left. Please.” Sanok expected this. He would feel the same way if Ben was the one being held. However, if she was emotionally compromised, being on the planet could open herself, and others, to mistakes that could lead to very bad consequences. "Ensign, I understand, but for everyone's safety, it may be best to assign you to protect the Rosenante." He paused. "I will consider it." Shaking her head, she said, “Sir, if I can promise you anything, it is this: I have never let my emotions get in the way of my job. Never. Please. I need to do this. I will stay in the hotel. I'll do anything. Please.” Part of Sanok wanted to say, yes, but he had a responsibility to the entire crew, and the people on BA4. The needs of the many.... Still, there was something telling him that Ensign Turner would still be able to do her duties. "As I said, Ensign, I will consider it. There is more at stake here than just one individual." Realising that this was something big, she said, “Are you going to tell the captain?” "I must tell the XO," said Sanok. "He and the captain need to know about anything that could be a potential threat to the success of the mission." Blake nodded and said, “I understand. If I may be excused...” Sanok nodded. She rose from the seat and said, “Thank you for telling me this, sir. I need to process this. It's all a bit of a shock to me. I just hope that Mr Soma is as good as the captain is, because if anything happens to her....” She left that statement hanging for a moment and then said, “I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. I just need time to work this through in my mind.” "I urge you to talk about this with someone," said Sanok. "Sharing with those that care about you, always helps." She smiled and said, "I will. I promise you that, sir." After Ensign Turner left, Sanok thought about everything she had said. He now had a difficult decision to make. She knew that all it would take was one stupid mistake and everything she had put together would unravel and then everything would most likely go all to hell in a hand basket. She was just about to go get a cup of tea when the person on the comms channel told her that she had an incoming message. Nodding Niambh told him to pipe it through. It turned out to be from the one woman who seemed to be Niambh's own personal nemesis. =/\=As you are no doubt aware, we are barricading your building. You know why I am calling.=/\= Niambh grinned. "Yup I do. You don't have the manpower or the ships to take this hotel outright so your trying to wear me down by boring me to death. Am I right? No, don't bother to answer. That was a rhetorical question. =/\=You are the most stubborn ape I have come across. I have your Ambassador with me. She wishes to speak with you about this situation.=/\= Niambh grinned. "Ooh sticks and stones darling. You really need to take some lessons in insulting people, but what he heck put the Ambassador on. Anything is better than talking to you." Niambh waited and shortly the Ambassador appeared on the screen clad in a simple jumpsuit and sandals. Grinning Niambh addressed the Ambassador. "Good morning Ambassador I must admit that you're looking a little peaky this morning and to be honest your current choice of clothing does nothing for your figure. Couldn't you find something a little more chic to wear. Or did you just simply get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning? I didn't quite catch it the last time. I guess I was too busy laughing at her. And as for letting that power mad excuse for a Leprechaun on my property. You tell her from me that if she puts one foot on my grounds without what I accept as a valid warrant and I'll blow her damn foot off and that's only for starters. The Veil cannot have my hotel unless they pay asking price and I rather doubt that they could afford it. As for handing over Federation Citizens to her or anyone else, you and I both know that there is no chance that I will do that. Not without a valid warrant naming each and every one of them and naming the charges against each and every one of them too. I told her this the last time. I guess she just doesn't give up. But I tell you what. I'll compromise somewhat. Tell her that if she sends you personally with the warrants, you and no-one else, I will at least give them serious consideration as long and none of the warrants have my name on them or that of my Security Chief, namely David Roskoff." Take that back to her and see what she says. I might be willing to negotiate somewhat. It depends on what she had to offer." Alaya allowed herself a smile. This had been going to plan but she knew that something else was going on here. Something unspoken. Leaning closer to the comm, she growled, “I give you one hour to answer reconsider. Do you really think that I am so stupid to allow this woman to enter your hotel? Alone? You apes are dumber than you look. I give you one hour to reconsider and, believe me when I say, if the answer is no, things could get a hell of a lot worse for you.” And with that, she shut off the comm. Glaring towards the Ambassador, she said, “Now, Madam Ambassador, thankyou. We have no further need for you.” Looking up towards the guards, she said, “Take her back to her cell.” After a few moments, she was alone. Things now had to be set in motion that would ensure a swift resolution to this. If it was one thing that she had learnt about these Federation people, they were stubborn to the point of extreme annoyance. But thankfully, she was nothing if not resourceful. Activating the comm, she said, “Carel, answer.” A voice and no video burst through the speakers and said, “I am here.” Carel had been working in the hotel and had been loyal to the Veil. When the time had come for the take over, Alaya had asked her to stay put and reveal nothing of her loyalties. Now the time had come to put her to action. Leaning forward, Alaya said, “You know what I want you to do. You need to take those desalinisation plants off line, permantently.” “Yes maam. All for the Veil.” “Prescisely. Do this and we will honour you when we can get into the Hotel and finally release you from your torment.” “Thankyou Maam. It might take a few days but we will have them down.” “Good, silent running from now on until the deed is done.” Alaya shut off the Comm and leant back into the chair, thinking ~So you want to play a game, Ms McNutly, then you are playing with the best in the business.~ (Reply Turner, McNutly, any) (Posted by Jackie Smith) --------------- (Beta Aquillia IV - Hotel Atlantis - Hotel Owner - Niambh McNulty - Day 1 - 0922) =/\= I give you one hour to answer reconsider. She seems, somewhat, how shall I put it, pissed off to say the least." Niambh started to laugh. "Exactly, and that is precisely what I want her to be. People like her who get annoyed easily make mistakes. I want her to make mistakes and I will do everything I can to help her to make them. The long hours had taken it's toll on her fragile mind set and she had broken down for the second time in as many days. After the crying has subsided and the screams had stopped, Tayla sat with her back against the wall, taking in deep breaths. Thinking through everything that had happened in the last few months. Taking in everything that had been said to her. The attempt from the captain of her previous ship had shaken her but she realised in a flash of light that it had lead her to this ship. To her love and to her friends. She realised in that moment that, no matter what had happened in the last month, that these people cared about her and wanted her to get better and become a fully functioning member of the crew. It was then that she realised what road was ahead of her and what she had to do. The depression and anxiety were still within her but she felt stronger in that moment to deal with the stares and with the over-riding doubt of herself. Lifting herself off the floor, she walked to her washbasin and splashed cold water onto her face. Looking into the mirror, she smiled, softly, at herself and said, “You can beat this. You can. You have a crew of people behind you and you will do this and show them that you can.” --------------- (Beta Aquillia IV, Main Government Compound, Corridor,Lt Alaya, Day 2, 1950) After the succesful barricading of the hotel for the last few days, Alaya had allowed herself a moment's rest. Walking back into the compound after visiting her sister's grave, she was in no mood to be bothered. She strode into the office that she had claimed as her own and sat at the large wooden desk. ~These apes are so wasteful~ she thought to herself as her head rested in her hands. The stress of the whole revolution was beginning to tel. She had barely slept since it had begun and her temper was very short. After a few moments, the comm system trilled to let her know that someone was trying to get intouch with her. Rubbing her eyes, Alaya sighed heavily and said, “What?” “Maam, there's a ship approaching.” Suddenly wide awake, Alaya replied, “Who? Damn it, those persistant apes have finally come for their people.” Taking a moment to collect herself, she said, “Does he know yet?” “No, Maam. We thought it best to tell you first.” came the reply. “Okay, I will....” But then she was interupted, “Maam, there's another ship just entered the system. It's one we haven't seen before.” Groaning heavily, she said, “Right. Silent running, no unauthorised comm signals from now. We don't need them hearing our secrets. If you need to communicate, use runners. Don't use the comm system until further notice.” And with that, she closed the comms. Captains Salid brought the Rose to Red Alert status. The ship was bathed in the red flow of the ship's newly ordered status. The tension level also rose Tom knew his friends were professionals but there was always the 'unknown factor' and he wondered quietly what was about to occur. "Mister Jackson, has there been any increase in comm chatter indicating that the Veil knows we've arrived?" Tom monitored the comm channels momentarily and teported " The levels have dropped somewhat Captain" The Co also added "Monitor all their communications, coordinate any tactical command you might overhear to Sanok. He will advise me if there is any need for tactical action." "Aye Aye Air" Tom added. Tom began scanning all communications channels. Other than the normal commercial traffic things were quiet. This bothered Tom for some reason. Repkying to the skipper Tom reported his concern. "Sir, other than regular commercial traffic there is no indication of military traffic. I recommend we assume we've been detected" Tom suggested. (Reply: Bob, Skipper) Tom kept his eye on the comm situation. His 'sixth sense' was screaming loudly. (Reply: None) (Posted by: Bill W ) --------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge – CSO Lt tlha’nISta’ – Day 2 – 2005) ~Beta Aquillia IV…~ Lani’ thought as the Rosenante came into orbit around the planet. ~ghI’yaH!~ she thought. It was one thing to determine from research that a planet was classified as a super-earth, but to actually see the thing was another matter. When Red Alert was sounded, Lani’ murmured “Finally…” But it wasn’t the impatient Klingon ‘finally’ but a more Vulcan acknowledgement of completion of one stage and the beginning of another. Just before the ship’s arrival at its destination, Lanista had spent a half hour in her Quarters meditating. Well, at least she had tried. As it turned out, she proved to be allergic to Vulcan incense. So instead she burned a Klingon variety and did a Vulcan kata. It was the combination that had actually seemed to have a calming effect. "Mister Sanok, any sign of those freighters?" the CO asked. Lanista listened very intently to the reply, since the data would bear directly on her part of the mission. She agreed with the Captain’s estimation that as long as they are in dock they weren’t going to be a danger. Salid further ordered Sanok to “See if there's any way you can find out why they originally belonged to and maybe pull some schematics of their original systems." Lani’ would want that data too, and Sanok’s analysis of any inherent weaknesses. "Mister Lanista, is your fighter ready to deploy should we find it necessary?" “It is, Captain. As is its ‘special cargo.’” (Reply Salid) "Very good. I want you to run a full sensor sweep of the system, map and report any anomalies you may find. If there is a ship hidden somewhere out there, I want it found." “HISlaH, joHwI’!” she barked, ‘Yes, m’Lord!’ in Klingon. “However, departing from the Rosenante while cloaked would be our best option here. Perhaps you could find some excuse for deploying a shuttle? I could pilot the maQmIgh out after it, already cloaked.” (Reply Salid) After the Captain spoke with Matrix, he turned to the FO and said, "…We'll have Lanista escort your shuttle craft down with her cloaked fighter in case there's additional trouble…” This didn’t seem to Lani’ to be strategically sound. The maQmIgh could not fire weapons while cloaked. Decloaking to defend the shuttle would compromise the future (pending) action against the freighters. tlha'nISta’ would voice this concern to the Captain later, if need be. Someone saying, "Sir, Sensors are showing a ship dropping out of warp…!” caught Lanista’s attention and she caught herself thinking ~wIy cha’!~ precisely as the Captain said “On screen.” ‘On screen’ was one of the few phrases in Human that was as efficient as it was in Klingon. Both were two-syllable commands. "Captain, we are being hailed. It's from the new arrival sir." "Put them on." As the image changed from the unfamiliar starship to the entity evidently in charge of the strange vessel, Lani’ took a step forward, her eyes wide. ~Wings?! I don’t have wings!~ Lani’ thought. The creature – Lanista wasn’t even familiar with its species – address the CO as ‘War Captain…’ ~I like him already.~ As the impressive, humanoid avian spoke, tlha’nISta’ realized two things that affirmed her gut reaction. First, the being was perhaps just as inherently bellicose as she was. Second, ‘Dralar’ as he seemed to be called, had an honor-claim: his brother Toraz was among the hostages. When the exchange between the Captain and the birdman was over, Salid said to the FO, “Things just got very dangerous." “Not at all, Captain,” said Lanista, stepping forward. “If I may…” (Reply Salid, Soma, any) (Posted by Frank) --------------- (USS Rosenante, Bridge, 2O/CSec Lt. Sanok, Day 2, 2006) Salid said, "Mister Sanok. All hands, red alert, shields up, all weapons charged. I want to be ready should we be forced to defend ourselves." "Aye, Captain," said Sanok. He input the proper commands and the red alert klaxon began to wail. It had taken several days to reach Beta Aquillia IV, and it seemed as though there was now an increase in apprehension coming from all over the ship. It was especially strong on the captain, who was beginning to feel the weight of what he now had to do. Sanok knew this feeling would dissipate once the actual mission began, as the crew had proven many times in the course of their duties. It was akin to the initial nervousness one felt before doing some special task; speaking in public, playing in an important sports game. Once it began, the nervousness was gone. The Rosenante dropped out of the spiral drive, and Sanok began tactical sweeps of the planet. "Mister Sanok. Any sign of those freighters?" "Scanning now." Sanok paused, waiting for the results. "All freighters are in space dock. I'm sending you their locations now." "That's good news," said Salid. "As long as they are in the dock, they're not much of a threat to us. See if there's any way you can find out who they originally belonged to and maybe pull some schematics of their original systems." "Yes, sir," said Sanok. While Salid was issuing orders to the other bridge crew, Sanok began working on this. He found their registry numbers, then quickly obtained ownership and ship class information. He sent this information to the CO, FO, and all other bridge consoles manned by department heads. An order Salid gave to Ben, caught Sanok's ear. "I'll want you to be ready to head down to the planet, specifically to Atlantis station. We'll have Lanista escort your shuttlecraft down with her cloaked fighter, in case there's additional trouble." This didn't make sense to him. Lanista's ship was to be used later in the mission to capture the freighters. Using it to escort the shuttle down to BA4, could expose that part of their plan. He glanced at Lanista, who seemed to have noticed as well. Sanok was about to offer an alternate plan, but decided to wait until later. He looked at Lanista again, who was also remaining silent. "Sensors detected another ship coming. Sanok immediately prepared for an attack, but the large vessel turned out to be from the Skorr, and commanded by Dralar. Listening to the conversation between Salid and Dralar, Sanok came to a mixed conclusion. It was agreeable to him to have help, but the Dralar could be like the Klingons: too impulsive. They would need to be careful. (reply any) (posted by Bob) --------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge – FO- Lt. Add a security team. I want our presence to be seen by the people of that station and for them to know that we are there to help. Time to put a face on our arrival and to let the rest of the players in this little political game know that we've arrived. If you need anyone else, let me know. We won't be using transporters until we know that they don't have inhibitors available. I don't want my away teams trapped down there. We'll have a pre-mission briefing in the Strategic Operations Room in 45-minutes." Salid said. "I'll see to it Sir." Ben responded. Salid went on to issue commands to the helm to set a geo-syn orbit, Sanok reported that the freighters were docked and so far didn't appear to be any kind of a threat to them. So far so good, with some luck it'll stay that way. An announcement informed them that a ship was dropping out of warp but it was revealed to be Dralar's ship. It had been some time since Ben saw Dralar, he was pleased to see the Skorian had been doing well. Unfortunately things seemed to take a bad turn when Dralar announced the reason for their presence. The Veil had taken Skorr hostages as well including Dralar's brother, Toraz. Salid being a diplomat went on to convince Dralar it would be best if they worked together to achieve their common goal. Ambassador Dralar agreed, at least for the time being. Though he did add a warning. =^=...................... If we are unable to achieve our goals, we will be forced to unleash our military, and I do not see these people well disposed to warfare. It will be a slaughter =^= That was an understatement, the Veil had no idea what they were about to face should Dralar she fit to unleash the Skorian military upon Beta Aquillia IV. Ben wondered if the fight would last twenty four hours before it ended resulting in the deaths of many. How many innocents would be harmed or worse in that assault? He hoped he wouldn't learn the answer to that question. When the exchange between the Prince and Salid had concluded the CO turned to Ben. "Things just got very dangerous." He said. Ben was about to reply when Lanista came to stand before them. “Not at all, Captain,” said Lanista, stepping forward. “If I may…” Ben turned to Salid for a moment before turning back to face the new CSO. The only saving grace in the intuition was that Dralar, one of his own officers, although on leave for the moment, seemed to be in command of the vessel. This could achieve the thought that some klingons are here to help the Veil, or it could just confuse things even further. I'll think on this and make a decision concerning it at a later time. It has, however, just occurred to me, that we could very well ask the Skorr to fly escort for our shuttles and not risk exposing your ship before we're ready to utilize it. That will be something I think I can get Dralar to agree to." (reply Lanista, Soma iyw) Tom reported next. "Sir, other than regular commercial traffic there is no indication of military traffic. I recommend we assume we've been detected" Tom suggested. "Agreed. Keep me informed of any changes Lieutenant." (reply Jackson, Soma, Lanista) Daniel Greene --------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge – Bridge -COPS Lieutenant Tom Jackson - Day 2- 2017) Tom was monitoring the communication channels. Nothing but usual commercial traffic. He was reasonably sure the Veil forces were observing a communications blackout. Jackson reported his thoughts to Captain Salid. His old friend nodded and ordered " "Agreed. Keep me informed of any changes Lieutenant." "Yes Sir" Tom added. He had set up an automatic scan if military channels to run in the background. It would audibly generate a warning tone and record the conversation. Tom been learned this often produced additional material upon later review. Tom had friends which were his classmates from the academy in SF intel now. He learned a few tricks of their trade. Thus was this was one of those. His 'sixth sense' was working overtime. The Veil had acted swiftly. It seemed odd that they had weaponry to assure the progress made so far. The logical step was they had backers. Now who they might be was an intriguing question. Tom was scanning known Romulan and Cardassian frequencies in passive mode. It never hurt to be prepared he figured. He headed to the front of the room where Captain Salid was waiting along with Ambassador Dralar. Once he was standing so that everyone had a clear view he got down to business. "Doctor where do you stand with your preparations?" He asked Caskie. (reply Caskie) "Good, is sickbay also ready?" (reply Caskie) "Once we have set up at Atlantis Station we'll begin transporting the worse of the injuries." He said. "How are the shelters coming?" (reply Matrix, O'Neill) "Good work gentlemen." Ben said. He knew the answer to his next question but he had to ask it just the same. "Are the security forces ready for the possibility of repelling boarders?" (reply Sanok) "Good." He said. "We'll need a small team to go down with us, I'll leave the selection to your discretion." (reply Sanok) "Mr. Jackson has there been any indication that the Veil is preparing to launch their freighters?" (reply Jackson) "We'll have to keep an eye on them." He said. "The situation could change at anytime. Mr. Davis how's your profile of the Veil coming, anything that we could use to our advantage?" (reply Davis) "I'm sure we'll find a chink in their armor somewhere." He replied. A lot was riding on the outcome of the situation on Beta Aquillia IV, what they did in the next twelve hours or so could turn the tide to their favor. He was no diplomat but Salid had put his faith in him and he wasn't about to let his CO down. He do everything in his power to resolve the issue through diplomatic means. (Reply Soma, Any) (Posted by Jackie smith) --------------- (USS Rosenante - Strategic Ops Rm - COUNS Parker Davis - Day 2 - 2054) When it came time for Davis to report, he had his profile of the Veil ready as well as a comprehensive plan for the refugee center. He started with the profile, in answer to Soma's specific question. "My profile is basically the same, as we don't have much new information on the Veil. I'll be able to tell you more when we arrive, Sir, especially when I get on the ground. The biggest advantage we have against them is that they're inexperienced. We should try to use that to our advantage, whether this encounter results in politics or military action. If we can prove through our actions that they are incapable of their achievements without some kind of assistance, we may be able to prove that they're working with someone and that will make it easier to expose who they're working with. A subversive benefactor will cut and run as soon as he's in danger of being discovered. Otherwise he'd publicly support whatever he's supporting. As soon as they know we're close to catching them, they'll try to extricate themselves quickly and our presence will hopefully hinder their exit strategy to expose them. If it turns out that the Veil is acting on its own, then that is also an important discovery and it would change my profile completely, because then the leader of the movement's profile would suddenly become dictatorial and genius-level. We'd be dealing with an individual mind instead of a collective consciousness, and the main goal would no longer be counterinsurgency, it would be exposing this one individual as a fraud." He sat back for a moment. "But in my professional opinion, I do think they're being supported by a benefactor and I don't think we'll get out of this without a military conflict." "I'm sure we'll find a chink in their armor somewhere," Ben stated. Parker nodded. "As far as the refugee camp goes, Sir," he went on to report, "I've got everything planned out and it's been sent to you electronically for approval. The refugee camp consists of a few main areas for civilians and a closed off area for prisoner isolation, medical isolation, or classified meetings. Keep in mind that the refugee area is a civilian area and would only be used for the exchange of military information in a last-resort scenario." With that in mind, he began his summary. "The refugee camp will be equipped with an industrial sized replicator. Refugees and workers from the Rose will be able to replicate whatever they need for it, and it'll need a backup power source or even two if possible. The camp is primarily for those individuals who do not require emergency care, and is equipped with a high-power transporter to ensure that emergency cases can be transported up to the Rose. However, the triage area will have an emergency surgery bay as part of the specifications Dr. Fraiser outlined. The largest areas are the common area and the sleeping area. The common area will be used for eating and general gathering. There will be smaller gathering areas for families or friends to isolate themselves from the larger crowds. This plan can accommodate any size. I'll just need to know how many refugees we'll be expecting." (reply Soma) "Very well, Sir. Then that will also indicate the number of volunteers we'll need from the Rose to staff the area. No area should be left unstaffed at any time. Staffing gives the people a good impression of us, makes them confident that we know what we're doing, and it deters crime. We'll need a security presence, but it shouldn't be overwhelming. The refugee camp should be a place where people can get food, clothing, shelter, and medical care any time of the day. Snacks and water should be provided continuously because once a person knows he can feed his family and has a water supply, his motivations for committing crimes are cut in half. We also should have a registration system that involves checking guests in--and we should refer to them as guests, giving them as much respect as possible--and we need to check them out as well. Anytime someone enters or exits, and they should be able to come and go but not at the risk of anyone's safety, we'll need to track them. A simple wrist bracelet is the easiest way to track guests. I'll be providing counseling services at regular intervals but in order to run this camp I'll need to be free from those duties for part of the time, at least. If someone is suffering severe distress, I'm going to recommend we send them up to the Rose to protect other guests. Otherwise they'll have to wait until a more convenient time to get psychological help." He sat back. "It's going to be a learning experience for everyone and there will be cultural mistakes made, but I'm confident that if we present them with this kind of facility to ensure that they are safe, we'll set a good example for others and we may see a few more of these shelters opening up around the planet, provided the word gets out." He ended with, "When you're in real trouble--starving, dying, naked--word gets out as to where help is, pretty quickly." Mike Rosenbauer-Day 2- 2056) As the senior staff and their assistants parsed their information, to the rest of the training operation, Mike sat absorbing it all, slowly and methodically. He realized that the mission was a complex one, made even more so by the obvious need to protect refugees fleeing the sporadic conflicts breaking out across the city. He could see the potential for conflict, not just with possible militant Veil members, but also with regular Aquillian military units. The potential for disaster was ever-present and the need to establish safe-zones was especially necessary. Mike was impressed with the crew's ability to adapt and prepare for what he saw was fundamentally the most complicated operation ever undertaken by any Federation starship without immediate fleet support. His professional opinion of the crew, already at a high mark, rose even higher. Eventually, it was his turn to give out some additional information. He looked over at Raschen and gave him a nod as he rose to his feet. "It's time to share the latest intelligence data with you all, so that we are all on the same sheet of music. Since our arrival, we've been able to ascertain several new facts about the occupation and distribution of the pro-Veil forces in the city and at critical sites." He tapped a few buttons on his PADD and the holographic display in the center of the operations briefing room sprang to life. A three dimensional representation of the Capital city, Joba appeared there in all it's intricate detail. "While Veil communications seem to have all but stopped since we arrived, we've been able to intercept and decrypt a large percentage of regular Aquillian military chatter. Using the information gleaned for this chatter, we have a fairly strong indication of the location of the somewhat erratic front lines." He tapped another series of buttons and an nary red line snaked it's way through the display. "Now this line represents the rough estimation of the points of contacts between military and Veil forces. It is not static, and it is not consistent, in that some of this line is extrapolated by connecting known flashpoints together to create a cohesive line for your better understanding of the tactical situation in the capital." "The refugees are all fleeing seaward, towards the docks and the shores in an attempt to stay clear of the fighting. This means that our best area for operations remain in this general area." Mike added a series of blue circles to the map. "These areas are currently open public parks, there are three of them. They are of sufficient size to convert the space into refugee camps, which have the added advantage that their close proximity to one another keeps our defensive perimeter as short as possible, while still remaining contiguous. Thus, one perimeter, instead of three." "Between the parks are some limited residential buildings, but there are a number of warehouses, that we may be able to clear out to increase our storage capacity for berthing, or supplies should our stay here prove to be longer-term. In addition, there is a natural barrier at the shoreline, which we could easily patrol using shuttles or automated sensor grids." He added a green perimeter line to the map. "In addition the presence of this raised pedestrian skyway can be turned into natural choke point, security checkpoint and defensive barrier, by adding mobile shield generators. The upper levels of the causeway can be used as prepared firing positions for security troops, and the lover levels can be sealed of with mobile barricades, shields and checkpoints which can be readily constructed. In effect, we can create a 4.5 kilometer long unbroken barricade, by following the shape of the skyway and using the resources we have. Checkpoints and processing centers can be set up along that zone and we can address security for new entries as needed." "The problem that we have is that some of the area includes existing residential structures which are most likely inhabited. Operational security, ensuring that we don't have potential troublemakers inside our perimeter before we get it set up means that we'll have to sweep those buildings at the risk of alienation with some of the local population." He marked them as orange circles. "And then there's the matter of Atlantis Station." he reached out and tapped the buttons on the display once again, changing the image to that of the station, "I agree that it is the best location for an overall command center. That said, it's also under siege. We currently have a rag-tag armada of private vessels filled with armed personnel surrounding the building at a distance of about 0.5 kilometers. Again general chatter indicates that the besiegers are most likely Veil troops, but that there is potential armed resistance at the station already in place. If that is the case, then I suspect that the owner will be more than glad to have Federation support, especially if we can make some sort of display that will discourage any real thoughts of assault upon the hotel. It is my suggestion that we ask the Skorr to overfly the blockading ships. To let the Veil know what the likely consequences of their actions will be if they attack the hotel. Chatter also indicates that among the refugees there may be members of the government in exile." "Captain I suggest that we avoid the use of transporters for any of our deployment wherever possible. It is a strong suspicion that the military and police forces on this world have among their standard equipment mobile transport inhibitor units, which could result in personnel and equipment becoming completely cut off." "Agreed" Salid replied. "Beyond those facts, that's what I have. I estimate 50 security personnel will be needed to hold the perimeter. The rest can be deployed as needed for internal security of the site and for security on the Rosenante directly." (Reply: any) (Posted by Steve) --------------- (Skysplitter- War Room- Ambassador Dralar-Day 2- 2100) Dralar, Ambassador of the Skorr Hierarchy and Prince of Skoria stood leaning over the holographic display table that dominated the center of the War room aboard his ship. Around him the room buzzed with hectic activity as the various unit commanders made their preparations for an all out assault against the planet of Beta Aquillia IV. The world was large, it's oversized sphere would make things a little more complicated, since that meant that his ground troops would be forced to occupy more territory should an invasion be called for. The military forces of the Aquillians were formidable, overall, if it hadn't been for the recent coup. The lack of a clear chain of command would mean that the military forces would delay deployment, or fail to deploy at all. It also meant that the Skorr forces would be able to overwhelm the majority of the planet with ease, at least in theory. Dralar had conducted campaigns like this before. His experiences in the conflicts with the Orions had proved to be just as complex and as tactically challenging as this one may well become. He didn't relish military conflict against an obviously inferior foe, yet at the same time, he understood the need to make it clear that any attack upon Skorr citizens would be responded to as needed, by force of arms. Still, he was as much a diplomat as he was a warrior and he would need to at least attempt to hold some sort of discussions with the leader of the new government before taking any further direct action. He looked over at Jovek, a mentor and one of the most highly respected War commanders among the Skorr. His exploits were the thing of legends, even during his lifetime and he had been honored in ways that no Skorr before him had ever been. "What do you think Jovek?" he asked the older man. Jovek turned his battle scarred face upwards from the display, his dark blood red eye patch twitched in irritation as he redirected his gaze to his one-time pupil. "It will be a slaughter Dralar. The Aquillians have no starships save those freighters, and they are only just now being refit to carry weapons. They are no threat for us, they are like Voxels in the open." He raised one of his hands and gently traced the three parallel scars that marred his otherwise pristine beak. It was something that he always did as he was formulating strategy. "Still, their military is formidable, provided they ever solidify into a cohesive force again. The in-fighting has weakened them, and has left entire strategic zones exploitable to attack. I could have a quarter of a million troops on the ground in less than an hour and we could have secured the critical urban centers and infrastructure within 72-hours." "It would be a quick and very one-sided conflict. I believe that we would lose good soldiers nonetheless, but not nearly as many as the enemy would lose. I believe that we will have complete dominance of the airspace of the planet, and other than the Federation starship, we already dominate the orbital and system airspace." "How many casualties do you project for our troops?" Dralar asked. "Perhaps a hundred thousand in total. Mostly in the infantry." Jovek replied. Dralar bobbed his head in understanding, "And for the inhabitants?" "There are always high casualties among an indigenous population when conducting this sort of operation. You know that Dralar." he replied evasively. "How many?" Dralar insisted. "Perhaps two-million. accounting for enemy forces and unexpected collateral damage, as well as the potential disruption of basic necessities. It could be worse if their military manages to coalesce." There it was, two-million inhabitants that would suffer if the Veil did not understand his requirements and his commitment to his mission. "Continue with your preparations, I want to be ready to deploy our troops should it be necessary. I will brook no delays." Dralar ordered. "Yes, Ambassador." "And Jovek, do pray that we do not have to use the military for this, because it will mean that diplomacy has failed." "I always pray never to use the military, but I also pray that when it is time to do so, that we destroy all those that stand before us. War is only Diplomacy that has to be backed up by force of arms, Ambassador. And we always win at diplomacy, one way or the other." Jovek replied. Dralar bobbed his head in understanding, "yes we do, Jovek- old friend, we always succeed. I'd like for you to accompany me over to the Federation ship to speak to their captain." "Dralar, I do not believe that is a good idea. They will oppose us if we decide to use our might here. They will intervene and we will be forced to destroy them." Jovek replied, "You should distance yourself from them, they represent a weakness in you." Dralar, snapped his beak at Jovek. "Be wary Jovek. If you suggest that I hold allegiances above those to my Father, I will see you plucked and your wings broken." he warned, the temper obvious in his voice. Jovek fixed his one good eye upon the prince. " I suggest no such thing, my Prince. I only point out your affection for the Federation may cloud your decision when the time comes." "My ability to decide is as clear as a summer day over Shalarm. You can be assured of that Jovek. When the time comes, I will not hesitate to make my decision, and you will stand with me." Dralar replied. "Yes, I will stand with you, as I always have. In service, honor and in death." Dralar bobbed his head in approval, "continue your planning, but be prepared to accompany me to the Federation ship. Bring an honor guard if you like." "I live but to serve. I will be ready."
