Dahlia smiled. She was finally getting married and to her childhood crush at that. "Yes Tom, that's perfectly fine with me, since it would be a more traditional ceremony." Of course she hoped that tom realized that as soon as he had signed the marriage contract that the wedding was complete, at least as far as Ferengi contractual law was concerned. Which meant that it was binding in the Federation also, but if tom wanted to be married in the traditional human manner, then that was fine with her. "Human females tend to want a mid or matron of honor to assist them. We male types usually have a best man to help us. I have selected a fellow officer to whom I feel close to. Do you have any one that you would like to perform that for you?" Tom asked. Dahlia frowned for a moment as she thought about it. "You know I've never really thought about it, but I don't really know any women. Maybe you could find someone to fill the role for me? maybe one of your friends from the Rosenante?" She gave a weak smile a little embarrassed that she didn't really know anyone to fulfill that role in their traditional federation wedding. Both had loved each other since they were kids. Tom knew that as soon as he had signed his step-dad's cntract they were considered as married. he knew his mum would be pleased. She had always liked Dahlia. It wouldn't surprise Tom if his mom had arranged this. Jackson, while the step son of a major Ferengi, was also human. He wanted an official hew*mon. The human ceremony was something he had long thought of and dreamed about. Tom was never a 'ladies man' and had partied little during the academy time. Steven Matrix – Day 3 - 1337) Matrix, Ensign Odom and Lieutenant Peter Cohen had completed the replication and testing of the Mark IVc field computing cell nearly 2 hours earlier. Ensign Odom and downloaded the telemetry data from the murder scene and the Mark IVc was approximately three minutes and twelve seconds away from finishing its analysis. "This is an amazing little computer core." said Peter looking over the display output. "Yes sir, the design matrix states its processing speed is nearly a half a million kiloquads per second." replied Ensign Odom. "Since we couldn't replicate the typical memory capacity we're having to upload the output in near real time to the 989's computer core." Matrix was looking over the output summary as it was streaming to the tertiary monitor station. The feed was provided by a rudimentary optical conduit they had devised during the replication sequencing. "Well according to this the 989s data center is keeping up with our feed. Our primary core doesn't have the memory capacity yet online to handle the data generated not to mention the 3D scene recreation." said Matrix. "How did you come about this little contraption anyway Steve?" asked Peter. "Well I contacted Star Fleet E&R to see if we could provide them with the raw data, have them analyze it and send it back. A friend there, Commander Andrews provided me with the Mark IVc design matrix and suggested we replicate it here." said Matrix. "...because it would be quicker than having E&R crunch the data and transmit it back." added Ensign Odom. Matrix founded at the Ensign's comment, "Our own computer cores were already offline when we got the request to process the data and the 989 was already inundated with requests due to the murder. This worked out well." "Okay, its done and..." Ensign Odom tapped his display panel,"...confirmation that the 989 has the data sequence and analysis." "Perfect." =^= Matrix to Lieutenant Soma. The murder scan analysis has been completed and uploaded to the Starbase 989 computer core under 'Cohen-Alpha-9334.' The Rosenante's computer cores are not at production capacity due to the refit so we had to use the 989's resources. =^= (Reply Soma) =^= Very well Lieutenant I hope this helps your investigation. Matrix out =^=. "Okay, lets put this little baby in storage bay three for now." said Matrix. (Reply Soma) (Posted by Steve) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Captain's Quarter's, CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, 2012) "That will involve testing a theory we have." Ben began. "We believe Quol Nor has been using a hologram to commit the murders. Doctor Ichijo determined that both wound tracks were identical, even someone who is highly skilled would have trouble producing the same wound twice. The theory also helps explain the lack of evidence at the scenes. Both Victims were held in force fields to prevent struggle while the assassin killed them." Ahmed nodded. The deduction perfectly good sense to him. Ben continued. "Ensign O'Neill suggested reactivating the Rosenante's holo-emitters, I had the system locked out once I learned of a request to make the ship fully holo-capable. We think that Quol Nor will send his assassin to stop us." Ben said. "We'll set a trap that will hopefully allow us to trace the hologram back to him, once that is accomplished we can arrest and charge him with the murders." The Captain frowned for a moment before he forced his face back into a normal mask of interest. "Alright, but I want every precaution taken. This program has already killed two people, I don't want to add to it. I also want to be kept informed of any unexpected developments as soon as possible." (reply Soma) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Captain's Quarter's, CTAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, 2014) Ben could see that Salid wasn't fond of the idea he proposed, it did involve a great deal of risk. Someone would have to be the bait for the trap and faced the risk of serious injury and possibly death because of it. Ben didn't like the idea either but they had to make the connection some way and this was the only way they could see working to their advantage with any degree of certainty. "Alright, but I want every precaution taken. This program has already killed two people, I don't want to add to it. I also want to be kept informed of any unexpected developments as soon as possible." "Of course Captain." Ben replied. "Every precaution will be taken to safeguard those involved. I don't want to add to the body count either but I don't see any other way to make the necessary connection. Participation will be voluntary, no one will be ordered to do this." Ben finished his tea. "I will notify you of our progress and when we are ready to go ahead with the plan." (reply Salid iyw) (posted by Milo Young) ===================================================================== (Starbase 989 - Tournament Chambers – CMO, Kimiko Ichijo - Day 4 - 1332) Kimiko was back at her post during the final day of tournament, forgoing the dubious honor of getting wacked by sticks. She watched the combatants a little closer, with a new eye now that she was informed that the match was rigged. Why Soma and O'Neill were participating in this farce was quite beyond her. The blatant false calls were as clear as the nose on her face. ~Easy there, Kimi. Half of what I see may just be what I want to see, stones for chrysanthemums~ She watched Soma’s match end as she expected, he would have a few bruises in the morning and that leg was going to be stiff in the morning. She was surprised with his restraint, Kimiko was getting annoyed just watching the disrespect of the Klingon and then there was the scoring; which was already a foregone conclusion. The doctor shook her head and moved on. The doctor noticed that the tournament had taken a sinister turn, there were less injuries created for over exuberance and more that seemed from either revenge or calculation. This competition should not be allowed to continue or someone could be killed and right that would be a race between a competitor and a judge. She started to look for Soma to see if they could just suspend the matches now, when she noticed that O’Neil was getting ready to compete. The match was as lopsided as any that she had seen; the Cataxian was clearly outmatched and was telegraphing her moves worse the Western Union. The first time that her instructor used that comparison, it took her three days to understand what he meant and still she could not understand the humor behind it; however if anyone deserved the simile, it was this girl. Kimiko could tell the moment that she snapped, the charge had a half-mad quality to it. The woman charged the ensign and knocked him to the ground, the doctor saw a look of pain flash across O’Neill’s face. ~This is not sparring, this is brawling~ Kimiko looked at the judges ~That middle one looks uncomfortable, but damned if he is going to do anything~ Kimiko walked towards the judges, not sure what she would do, but propelled by the urge to do something. The Human judge lifted his hand and a whistle blew. ~At last, sanity returns~ "This tournament is terminated prematurely. Illegal maneuver, a grappling move with legs, Ensign Eian O'Neill is hereby disqualified." ~Huh~ "What?! She bit me!" The doctor turned towards O’Neal, who was holding his arm. "The judges will decide if any action is to be taken against Drekka. Please exit the tournament floor and see a doctor about that arm." Kimiko just shook her head and walked towards the ensign. O’Neil glared at the Cataxian and then his features softened "Are you okay, Drekka? The tournament's over--there's no need to be afraid." He moved forward as the woman who moved back, "I think Drekka needs a doctor. She's clearly not well..." O’Neil stated while he looked around. Kimiko stopped at the mat. “Is there a problem, Ensign?” Kimiko stated (Reply O’Niel) (Posted by Jack) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Tournament Chambers - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 4 - 1340) Eian was looking around, hoping to spot Dr. Ichijo or another doctor in the audience who could help Drekka before she attacked someone else. “Is there a problem, Ensign?” Kimiko asked as she approached the tournament mat. ~Thank God--I really didn't want to try to play counselor to this girl with the teeth.~ "Yes," he said, his tone irritated. "This is Drekka--she's a beginner competitor, and I think she got a bit in over her head, and now she's...well, you can see for yourself. I'm not a doctor but I don't think that's normal behavior." Drekka was now pressed against the barrier separating the audience from the competitors. The audience had moved away from the barrier, giving her room. She looked like a cornered animal, her eyes alert as she stared at Eian and Kimiko, trying to decide if they posed a further threat. Growing up on a starship, Eian had seen some pretty strange behavior. The closest thing he could come to this, though, was when a young boy named Alexi was trapped under rubble on Faranok II after an earthquake. Eian's mother Grace had told him about this boy to provide Eian with an example of someone less fortunate than himself. Alexi had been orphaned by the earthquake damage and was trapped under rubble for fourteen days with a limited water supply and an abandoned phaser. Grace's rescue team had found the eight-year-old, and he had been so frightened by their presence that he had shot at them with the phaser and had to be sedated to be brought out of the rubble. Eian saw the boy in sickbay, and he had the same panicked look on his face that Drekka had now. Except, covered in fur and possessing sharp teeth, the Cataxian woman looked a lot more threatening than a malnourished eight-year-old. ~Maybe some kind of psychological trauma happened to Drekka? Why in the hell would she *agree* to compete in the first place, let alone be cleared to compete? And rigged match or no, what kind of sick bastard would put her in this position?~ "She definitely needs some medical attention," he reiterated to Kimiko. "I wouldn't mind getting this sewn up," he stated, indicating his bite wound. It was large and relatively deep, but wasn't bleeding too badly and didn't pose a threat to Eian's immediate health. It was more important to get Drekka out of this situation. (reply Kimiko) "Do you think you can help her?" (reply Kimiko) (posted by Morgan G) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Tournament Chambers – CMO, Kimiko Ichijo - Day 4 - 1341) Kimiko looked between the ensign and the Cataxian The woman had backed towards security barrier while O’Neil addressed her "Yes," he said, his tone irritated. "This is Drekka--she's a beginner competitor, and I think she got a bit in over her head, and now she's...well, you can see for yourself. I'm not a doctor but I don't think that's normal behavior." “No. no, it’s not” Kimiko replied The woman, girl really, gripped the metal barrier ignoring the crowd behind her. Kimiko hoped that no one behind her would try to help "She definitely needs some medical attention," he reiterated to Kimiko. "I wouldn't mind getting this sewn up," he stated, indicating his bite wound. Kimiko motioned for the Ensign to come over to her. She had not had much training in counseling and felt a little out of her depths. "Do you think you can help her?" He asked Kimiko looked at his earnest face, sighed after realizing that she could not just say no. She reached into her bag slowly and pulled out a cloth and handed it to O’Neil. In a low voice Kimiko stated “Hide the blood and walk slowly towards her, getting no closer than you had previously. Apologize for throwing and hurting her, then ask for her forgiveness” The doctor held up a forestalling hand. “Yes, I am aware that you didn’t hurt her and she bit you, but you want to give her a sense of control. “ (Reply O’Neil) “Play it by ear, get her away from the crowd, but don’t let her feel that you are getting her alone, make no sudden movements and don’t direct her, maintain the appearance that she is in control.” Kimiko advised “When she has calmed somewhat, I’ll have a ‘friend’ that you can introduce her to” Kimiko made a shooing motion and stepped away. She tapped on her commucator and spoke with Medical. (Reply O’Neil) (Posted by Jack) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Tournament Chambers - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 4 - 1342) After Eian asked if the doctor thought she could help the distressed Cataxian, she handed him a cloth and said in a low voice, “Hide the blood and walk slowly towards her, getting no closer than you had previously. Apologize for throwing and hurting her, then ask for her forgiveness." ~I didn't do anything,~ Eian thought immediately, but Dr. Ichijo seemed to foresee that remark. She held up her hand. “Yes, I am aware that you didn’t hurt her and she bit you, but you want to give her a sense of control." Eian sighed. He understood the psychology of the situation--he had, after all, studied psychology extensively in the Academy. In certain hostage situations, one would have to deal with insane or unstable criminals and one would have to know how to handle them. He doubted Drekka was insane, but she definitely was showing signs of instability. He nodded. "Okay," he said. He had never actually negotiated with a violent sentient being. He had gone through many simulations on the holodeck but never one in reality, and if even one of the audience members got hurt because he screwed up, he knew he wouldn't forgive himself. ~Just think about the situation, leave those thoughts for later,~ he thought. ~You can do this.~ “Play it by ear," Kimiko advised. "Get her away from the crowd, but don’t let her feel that you are getting her alone, make no sudden movements and don’t direct her, maintain the appearance that she is in control. When she has calmed somewhat, I’ll have a ‘friend’ that you can introduce her to.” Kimiko made a shooing motion and stepped away. She tapped on her commucator and spoke with Medical. Eian took a deep breath and tied the cloth around his arm, hiding the blood. He then held his hands out in a non-threatening gesture, and walked slowly towards Drekka. "Drekka," he said, using her name with a purposely soft and gentle tone, "I wanted to apologize for what I did during the match. I didn't intend to hurt you." She didn't seem to really be hearing him. Her expression was still fearful and he saw her leg muscles tense and her fur begin to puff out slightly. ~Okay, she's threatened, not good.~ Eian halted his steps toward her, keeping a fair distance between them. "I realize I only told you my name once, so I figured I'd tell you again," he said conversationally, watching her body language and eye motion like a hawk. He wanted to beware if he needed to jump or tackle her or anything else of that nature. "My name's Eian." He smiled. "It's Irish--that means my relatives come from a certain place on Earth called Ireland." She seemed to start to listen now, her attention drawn toward his eyes instead of his hands. ~This is good,~ he thought. His ADHD brain was at work, and he was thinking of about four things at once. While analyzing her body language and eye motion, he was also thinking of what to say that would calm her down, and the 'fleeting thought' part of his brain was reminded of a comment his mother made once. ~"Eian,"~ she had said, ~"you have the most unusual blue eyes...almost hypnotic at times. Very distracting for girls, I'd imagine."~ The comment was made in jest, but Eian was counting on it being true. He was hoping that Drekka's eye contact with him would draw her to his voice, and to what he was saying. "Ireland's very green, a lot like Cataxia in its temperature. Cool air, it rains often...it's an island, you know. A small island near a large continent." She was definitely paying attention now. "I'm sorry about what I did during the match," he said again. She took a deep breath and exhaled deeply, and then closed her eyes momentarily. ~This is very good,~ he thought as her muscles began to relax and she let go of the rail. She took one step away from it, and looked at Eian again. He was careful not to step toward her, but he gestured toward the exit of the tournament floor. "Want to step out? I'll lead the way," he said, his voice staying calm and neutral. He began walking slowly toward the exit, keeping his hands visible at all times. When he exited, he made sure he was still visible to her so she wouldn't think he was sneaking up on her. She slowly followed. "I'm sorry, Eian," he heard her say quietly as she exited. When she came closer, he could see that she was beginning to cry. He gave her a sympathetic look and smiled, and said, "Don't worry about it. It's alright. Hey," he continued gently, and held out his hand, but didn't touch her. "You're okay." Drekka nodded, and then wiped her eyes with her sleeve. She didn't accept Eian's outstretched hand. Instead, she looked around to see who was watching. Eian did the same, hoping that Dr. Ichijo would have brought her 'friend' by now to speak to Drekka. (Reply Ichijo) (posted by Morgan G) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Tournament Chambers - CMO, Ens Kimiko Ichijo - Day 4 - 1345) Kimiko stood with Dr Ryder discussing the young Cataxian,"She was placed in a match that she felt completely outmatched and in the middle of that match, she lost control and started brawling with the ensign. He got bit and the match was ended. He lost for some illegal maneuver when he was trying to get away" The base's head counselor didn't look surprised ~Is it possible that our crew was the only ones here that didn't know about Tyler's behavior~ Dr Ryder looked from the women and O'Neil and stated. "It is hardly uncommon that frustration during a physical competition leads to these kind of assaults, it is a contact sport after all" The last was delivered in a biting tone. Kimiko arched an eyebrow. "I would hardly disturb you if this was the only behavior that concerned me" ~you pompous ass~ "I also noted that she reacted with extreme defensiveness and terror, after the match was ended." The Counselor rolled his eyes and blandly stated. "Again something to be expected, she was fearing retribution for the assault. I do not see that she is behaving that abnormally now. In fact she seems rather enamored with that young man she is with, he looks more terrified." ~I swear if he sighs and mentions the impetuosity of youth, I am going to smack him~ Dr Ryder sighed. Kimiko clenched her fist. The counselor continued with a superior tone. "I know that you were required to take a couple of psych classes in medical school, but if I were you, I would leave the diagnoses and treatment of mental disorders to the professionals." ~Why do you think I called you, you silly...~ "I am simply too busy to hold the hand of everyone who bit off more then they can chew and now feel bad." Kimiko unclenched her hand and looked at him anew. ~I need a different tack, obviously appealing to his professionalism is not going to work, I can't believe that I am going to do this.~ Kimiko clasped her hands in front of her and looked down. "I didn't someone in your position to have the time to speak with a civilian who justs feels bad, I was hoping that you might have a moment to suggest a counselor that was good a 'hand holding'?" ~I am so going to hell~ Dr Ryder looked thoughtfully for a few moments and stated "Ah yes, I know just the one. Ms Z'm'biva, she does well these things" he gestured towards the two "I believe she has a soft spot for 'strays', I will ask her to assist you presently. good day" And with that, the counselor turned and walked away. A few minutes later an Andorian appeared. "I was told by Dr Ryder, that I an needed here. You are the nurse that I needed to talk to" Kimiko smiled thinly. "No, there is a young women who had a break during a match and I suspect that there is underlying trauma that needs to be addressed" "I see and the commander thought that his talents were better used elsewhere" The Andorian stated, with a tone that showed that Kimiko was not alone in her opinion of the previous counselor. "Yes" Z'm'biva nodded. "Well, lets take a look then" Kimiko motioned to the ensign. (Reply O'Neil) (Posted by Jack) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Tournament Chambers - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 4 - 1346) In the past few moments, Eian was able to get close enough to Drekka to touch her shoulder. He did so gently, making sure she saw his hand move before he actually laid it on her shoulder. She jumped slightly at first but relaxed, and let him lead her slowly toward Kimiko and another counselor. After an apparently failure to get help from the first guy, an Andorian counselor appeared. Eian was introduced to the Andorian counselor Z'm'biva, and he presented Drekka before her. He said in a neutral, non-accusatory tone, "Counselor, this is Drekka. She was my opponent in the last match, and it got a little too rough." He glanced at Drekka, who now looked embarrassed and refused to make eye contact with anyone there. He turned back to the counselor. "Maybe you can take her back to Sickbay and make sure she's not hurt?" The Andorian woman seemed to be able to read body language and tone as well as Eian could. She smiled gently at Drekka and said, "Of course, if that's what Drekka would like to do." Sensing that they were waiting for her reply, Drekka didn't look up but did nod, and said, "Okay, that would be fine." "It's this way," Z'm'biva said, and gestured with her hand so that Drekka would walk beside her. As they walked away, the Andorian counselor turned her head and mouthed 'thanks,' to Eian. Eian nodded in acknowledgement. He hoped Drekka would be okay, and recover from whatever was bothering her. (no reply necessary) (Posted by Morgan G) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989- Tournament Chambers, CIV Tournament Judge Ieko Takawa- Day 4, 1405) "This doesn't look good" Ieko mumbled to himself as he noticed the small group of contestants heading his way. ~Calm down Ieko. It's alright.~ He thought as the group reached him. "It has come to my attention that this tournament isn't being run with fair play in mind, certain things have occurred that cannot be ignored. The scores have been less than fair and certain competitors have been given certain liberties." "And the pairings you've made have been less than professionally chosen. First you paired me with someone three times my size, then you paired Lt. Soma with a Klingon who doesn't know the meaning of the word "compete" and allowed a Cataxian with mental issues to compete in a match. And if we need to, we can go over the footage of each of these matches and compare them with the scores--they clearly don't match." ~They know!~ his brain screamed in almost immediate alarm before he managed to calm himself down. He wanted to run and hide, but it was obvious that he wasn't going to be able to do that. not now. "I.... uh..." He began as he tried to order his thoughts. "It's time to come clean." Ben stated. "Charges may come against you and your cooperation my lessen them somewhat." "Charges?" he asked. "I've done nothing criminal." He stated. "I'm the victim here. I have a wife and children. I'm the one being blackmailed here." Ieko burst out in a mixed tone of anger and relief. ~Oh, grandfather, what have I done?~ He wondered. "Many of the competitors share our views, with the exception of a few. What do you stand to gain from this, is it worth the risk of criminal rehabilitation?" "Maybe you didn't hear me," Ieko replied. "I'm not doing anything criminal. Morally wrong maybe, but not criminal. It's the captain. He came to us and forced us to alter the judging. For thirty years, I've been a judge and never swayed from my path. But threatening my family. I had no choice." “Oh, yes it was very much morally wrong, no mistake about that; however, nothing criminally wrong, how about conspiracy? Or criminal negligence, or even malpractice?” the female competitor replied with a degree of malice that was almost frightening. “Everyone that was injured throughout this competition is solely upon your head, period. At one time you may have been a victim, but the moment that you closed your mouth and eyes to what was in front of you, you were not a victim any longer, you became a collaborator, only paid in silence.” Her words stung. Ieko was deeply embarrassed, but he still didn't know what he could do about it. The woman stepped up to the older man. She was shorter than he, but her verbal ferocity made up for the fact. “If your ways have caused your weakness that was exploited, perhaps it is cleansing that it was brought to light. If this was manufactured, then light would expose the shadows as for what there are. Though your actions are not that of a righteous man, it is your choice either to continue as a collaborator or a penitent.” ~She's right of course.~ Ieko thought as the shame of his predicament flooded through him. What he did now would truly determine if he could salvage any honor from this at all, and judging by the way that everything had gone so far, it was possible that there wouldn't be anything to salvage when this was all finished. Kimiko stepped back and stated. “So which will it be, Ieko-sama” "Yes you are right." Ieko replied with a repentant bow, not only to her, but to all three of those that had finally confronted him. He realized that he had wanted so very much for the weight to be lifted from his shoulders, so that he could start anew. These three had taught him a lesson not only in humility but in honor and moral ethics as well. He walked past the assembled officers to the center of the room. The matches were all paused as he signaled the judges to stop them. He reached the podium and activated the auditorium's intercom. There was a series of light tones which insured that everyone was paying attention as he spoke. Once the noise in the room had died down completely, Ieko began, "Ladies, gentlemen and transgendered beings. It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that this competition is hereby suspended. The judgment if the panel of judges has been questioned, and rightfully so. I will assume full responsibility for the misappropriation of my authority as the head panel judge for this event. I am aware and have been aware of unethical and immoral decisions made by myself as well as the other judges assembled here. All competition, scoring and decisions will stop immediately and all those that have already been undertaken will be re-evaluated by the Association for Competitive Martial Training. Please clear these chambers at once. You will be contacted regarding the status of your matches." (reply Soma, O'Neill, Ichijo) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989- Tournament Chambers, CIV Tournament Judge Ieko Takawa- Day 4, 1406*) That was that, all three of them had confronted Ieko about the tournament. In the judges opinion he hadn't done anything wrong but Doctor Ichijo didn't pass up on the opportunity to mention the moral implications of his actions as well as conspiracy. "Yes you are right." Ieko replied with a repentant bow. He then lead them back out into the main chamber and addressed the competitors and the audience, calling an end to the tournament. This wasn't what Ben expected would occur but was glad it had. Ieko then said that the matches would be re-evaluated by the Association for Competitive Martial Training, this would result in more accurate results and no doubt be far kinder then those of the panel. Ieko finished by requesting that the tournament chambers be cleared, when everyone had left Ben walked up to stand beside Ieko. "Tell me what you know of the Ferengi Quol Nor, was he also involved in this?" (reply Ieko, O'Neill, Ichijo) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989- Tournament Chambers, CMO, Ens Kimiko Ichijo - Day 4, 1407) Kimiko decided that it would be a good idea to come along with the officers, she had been furious over the needless suffering that had been inflicted by greed and indifference and her rage had settled into an icy anger. "It has come to my attention that this tournament isn't being run with fair play in mind, certain things have occurred that cannot be ignored. The scores have been less than fair and certain competitors have been given certain liberties." Kimiko did not say a word. She waited for the denials, the cries of feigned innocence. " It's time to come clean." Ben stated. "Charges may come against you and your cooperation may lessen them somewhat." "Charges?" he asked. "I've done nothing criminal." He stated. "I'm the victim here. I have a wife and children. I'm the one being blackmailed here." Ieko burst out in a mixed tone of anger and relief. Kimiko raised an eyebrow. ~Well, he didn’t deny it, but hardly a victim~ "Many of the competitors share our views, with the exception of a few. What do you stand to gain from this, is it worth the risk of criminal rehabilitation?" Soma continued, clearly surprised that the judge would admit his collaboration so quickly "Maybe you didn't hear me," Ieko replied. "I'm not doing anything criminal. Morally wrong maybe, but not criminal. It's the captain. He came to us and forced us to alter the judging. For thirty years, I've been a judge and never swayed from my path. But threatening my family. I had no choice." That was enough for Kimiko “Oh, yes it was very much morally wrong, no mistake about that; however, nothing criminally wrong, how about conspiracy? Or criminal negligence, or even malpractice?” The doctor allowed free reign with tongue. As for her scores, yes, it was embarrassing and a little frustrating, but she was a doctor first, the arts did not define her and she did not take it that personal; however there were people here that the art was just as much as a part of them as their gender or culture, it defined them. Anyone who hurts people like that, to cause self-doubt and to abuse the trust that was given them, was little better than the blackmailers. “Everyone that was injured throughout this competition is solely upon your head, period. At one time you may have been a victim, but the moment that you closed your mouth and eyes to what was in front of you, you were not a victim any longer, you became a collaborator, only paid in silence” The Doctor stepped up to the older man. “If your ways have caused your weakness that was exploited, perhaps it is cleansing that it was brought to light. "Tell me what you know of the Ferengi Quol Nor, was he also involved in this?" Ieko frowned and then nodded his head. "absolutely. he was the source of all of this. Somehow he managed to cause me to break my vows of nearly half-a-century, although I don't remember it, but the data cube showed it all. And I don't know what he did to blackmail the other judges, but we've all talked and I can tell you that he was behind their blackmailing as well. It was after Quol Nor made his demands of us that Captain Taylor showed up with the data cube. He threatened my family. I figured that he and Quol Nor were partners or something." Ieko explained. "Then when Taylor ended up dead I was afraid that I'd be a suspect." (reply O'Neill, Ichijo, Soma - iyw) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante – Security Office - CTAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma - 1900) Ben was in the Rosenante's security offices making some final preparations for thier trap, it was time to put thier theory to the test. Would Quol Nor send his assassin to stop them? The plan counted on that fact. He wasn't happy about putting someone in harms way, the assassin had proven quite effective in the past and there was no margin of error here. The slightest hesitation on anyone's part now could result in the death of one of them. Not a pleasant thought. He and Sanok had searched Taylor's quarters and recovered the data cube, now when activated it was hoped that the Ferengi would receive it's signal and send his assassin to investigate. Sanok had volunteered to be the bait, Ben tried to talk him out of it but lost the debate. Instead he would lie in wait and attempt to stop the assassin when it appeared to kill his friend. Ensign O'Neill would be ready at a moments notice to shut down the holo projectors which will hopefully destroy the hologram and prevent it from reappearing. Tapping his commbadge he decided it was time to get things moving. "Soma to Sanok, looks like everything is ready here." (reply Sanok, rfm) He then contacted Eian, "Mr. O'Neill, are you ready to proceed?" (reply O'Neill, rfm) With the risk involved it was likely there would be an injury so they needed medical to be ready as well, opening another comm line he said. "Doctor Ichijo, we're almost ready to proceed. Have you made all the necessary preparations?" (reply Ichijo, rfm) The preparations complete, all there was to do now was wait for the trap to be sprung. (reply as above, any) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Holodeck 1 - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 4 - 1902) Eian had everything ready for their plan. He stood outside Holodeck 1 with all of the panels off the bulkheads, exposing the holodeck controls. He was ready to do whatever he might have to, in the case that something went extraordinarily wrong with their plan. Ben's voice sounded over his combadge. =^=Mr. O'Neill, are you ready to proceed?=^= "Ready down here, Sir, We've got the holo-emitters routed through one trunc line and I can cut power instantly. We've also got the signal emitters placed in the strategic locations we talked about, and we're ready to track any incoming signals," Eian responded immediately. (reply Soma iyw) (posted by Morgan G) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Security Office, Ensign sg Sanok, 1930) With everything in place to deal with Quol Nor's holographic assassin program, Sanok sat at his desk in the Rosenante main security office, pretending to be busy with routine paperwork. He had found that he was feeling some trepidation over being the bait. So much so, that he was actually doing a meditation technique, rather than doing any work. He wondered now if he had made a foolish decision. A few minutes passed and Sanok heard a barely audible sound. Looking behind him, he saw that a man was standing behind him. Standing, Sanok addressed him. "Mr. Hologram, I presume?" The holo image looked at Sanok, seemingly surprised at his off-the-wall comment. Without a word, he raised one hand, which turned into a sharp object that looked quite nasty. Sanok tried to tap his comm badge to call for help, but he found that he could not move. Pressing with all his strength, he tried to do something, but he was held in place with a strength beyond flesh and blood. As the holo-weapon began to press against his left side, all Sanok could do was hope Ben and Ensign O'Neill were on time. (reply The Cavalry) (posted by Bob) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Security Office, CTAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, 1931) Ben stood outside Sanok's office, he was growing impatient. His friend was on the other side of the door awaiting a holo assassin who had proven quite capable in the past. He decided that enough time had passed and it was time for action, hitting his commbadge he said. "Soma to O'Neill, start the trace and keep this line open." (reply O'Neill iyw) Ben entered the office to see the hologram standing over Sanok, his friend appeared to be frozen in place as the hologram held a curved weapon to his ribs. "Let's see how you deal with multiple targets." Ben said as he advanced on the hologram. For a moment he was ignored, the hologram seemed intent on killing Sanok. Ben reached in to grab the holo assassins arm to prevent the tip of his weapon from puncturing Sanok's ribs. That's when the hologram noticed there was another target in the room, it swung around with more force then Ben had given him credit for. It broke his grasp and brought the weapon up across Ben's arm tearing his sleeve and scrapping his arm in one fluid motion. Ben barely had time to deflect the blow as the business end of the weapon approached his throat. The hologram wasted no time and thrust out it's free arm to strike Ben in the chest knocking him across the offices floor. Ben hit the wall on the opposite side of the room, he felt the collision at his shoulders. A quick glance told him Sanok was still frozen in place. The hologram advanced and grabbed him off the floor and lifted him several inches, for now it had forgotten about Sanok. All things considered it made sense, Sanok was held in place by a foce field and could be dealt with after the hologram had finished with Ben. Raising his arm the hologram went for a finishing strike. "Now Mr. O'Neill." Ben shouted. The hologram swung down and just before his weapon could hit Ben he began to phase, Ben was dropped to the floor and just managed to catch himself to prevent injury as he watched the holo assassin flicker. It appeared he was fighting against Eian's attempt to shut him down. Several moments later the hologram faded from view and Ben moved to Sanok who appeared to be testing whether or not the forcefield still held him. "You Ok?" Ben asked. (reply O'Neill, Sanok) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Holodeck 1 - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 4 - 1932) Eian stood by, awaiting instructions to start the trace. He tapped his foot, he twiddled his thumbs, and he sang a 21st Century Christmas song in his head to keep his active mind from going nuts with anticipation. "Believe in what your heart is saying, hear the melody that's playing..." he muttered off-key. "...You have everything you need if you just believe..." =^=Soma to O'Neill, start the trace and keep this line open.=^= ~Thank God, I was starting to annoy *myself* with my Josh Groban imitation.~ "Aye, Sir," he said as he re-activated the holocapability of the Rosenante. "Holo-capability re-activated," he reported over his combadge, and then instantly started the trace. "Trace activated," he reported. Finally, he created a simulation of Quol Nor's holoprogram, one that would be easily traced and recognized as a recreation of the hologram experiment. As soon as Quol Nor saw it, he would no doubt send his hologram to stop whoever was marked as the creator, which right now was Sanok. "Program started, Sir," he reported. Now they waited. As it turned out, they didn't have to wait long. His video feed showed him the scene outside the Security Office, which showed the hologram appearing right behind Sanok. Sanok was frozen, and the hologram had pulled his weapon. ~Okay, I think we've sufficiently pissed him off.~ Eian was ready to kill the program when Ben entered the office and advanced on the hologram. He had to kill it when it wasn't in contact with either Ben or Sanok, or he risked its phasing harming them. He watched as Ben and the hologram struggled, and it threw Ben against a wall, ignoring Sanok for now. ~This isn't good, come on, get away from him...I need more space than that...~ The hologram then lifted him up and was about to strike a killing blow. Eian realized he couldn't wait any longer. He'd just have to take the chance. By the time Ben yelled, "Now, Mr. O'Neill!" Eian had already started the deactivation. He shut down the holocapability, and the hologram phased in and out. Ben dropped, and the hologram continued to phase. "Dammit, why won't you die?" Eian muttered urgently, cutting the power to all holodecks completely, and quickly rerouting the holocapability trunc line to an entirely different unit, which resulted in a complete loss of power to all holo-emitters. The hologram phased out. Eian exhaled. ~Thanks, God. That was a little too close.~ He turned his attention to the monitor, which showed Ben by Sanok's side. "You Ok?" Ben asked. Eian waited anxiously for the answer. ~I pray for both of them, God, and thank you for this deliverance,~ he prayed quickly. (reply any) (posted by Morgan G) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Security Office, Ensign sg Sanok, 1935) While Sanok felt the sharp point of the holo-weapon begin to press against his left side, he came to the conclusion that he had most certainly made an unwise decision to allow himself to be the bait to expose the assassin. This was compounded by the fact that Ben had yet to charge into the room to rescue him. Since the civil war, he had known he would die in a Starfleet uniform and never grow to a ripe, old age, but he never expected his demise to come so early in his life. When facing death, Humans told a similar tale, that their life flashed before their eyes. Not quite sure what that meant, Sanok would never know, as all he could see before his eyes, was the grim and determined face, and the cold, empty eyes of the holo-assassin. A familiar whoosh sound filled the air. Though Sanok couldn't turn to see who it was, he knew that Ben had come . While held by the force field, he could hear sounds of a fight, and occasionally see it. Ben was getting stomped. What was taking Ensign O'Neill so long? Sanok tried to move again, and unexpectedly, he was able. Not much, but he was no longer being held as he was before Ben engaged the holo program. ~Hurry, Eian, hurry!~ Sanok heard a slight buzzing sound, followed by Ben half-falling to the floor. Released by the force field, Sanok stumbled as well, missing his attempt to catch himself by grabbing the corner of his desk. Lying on the floor, staring blankly at the ceiling, he tried to catch his breath. "You okay?" said Ben. "I am," said Sanok simply. It was good to be able to say that. Satisfied that the Ferengi wasn't armed he followed him out into the crowded Promenade, there was quite a mob assembled and the stations security had formed a perimeter to keep them back. Ben placed a hand on the Ferengi's shoulder to stop him and then strode to stand in front of him, there were more then enough witnesses here to keep the Ferengi from protesting that he wasn't notified of his rights or the charges that were being brought against him. Turning to one of the guards Ben took a padd that he had preped before, containing a list of formal charges along with the standard rights to be read to all arrested personel. The padd also contained a recorder so there would be a record of the events that were about to occur. "Quol Nor." Ben began. "It is my duty to notify you of your rights as per Starfleet regulation section 12 subsection 14a paragraph 32. You have the right to counsel, you have the right to a fair trial," Ben continued reading the rights described under Federation law, once he had finished he moved on to the charges. "Quol Nor as of this day, stardate 2413.12.18 2108 hours you are hereby charged with the following; Sedition, Espionage, Traficking in Persons, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Accessory to Murder, Fraud across System and Sector lines, Tampering with Star Fleet Information Systems. These being the serious of your charges, others are pending." Ben stated. "For the record will you agree you have been notified of your rights and have been made aware of the charges facing you." Raising his voice lound enough for everyone to hear, "Don't worry folks, I've set the holosuites to run on a first-come first serve basis. The prices are so low it's criminal. I'm wondering why that Star Fleet didn't add that to the charges, but I'll be out in a month tops." he announced. Ben replied. Ben nodded to the stations security who proceeded to make a hole in the crowd so they could lead Quol Nor to the stations security offices for processing and booking. Then they could place him in a cell and contact his representative, he may be able to avoid a couple charges but he wouldn't avoid them all. The information provided by T'Sek and what was contained on the data cube would insure that. NRPG: This should conclude this thread unless someone has something else to add. She and Hank jad spoken to their immediate superiors - each had forwarded their request up the chain of command with hearty endorsements. She was smiling off into the distance as her terminal chimed indicating she had a message waiting her attention. She walked over to her terminal and entered her credentials,\. Soon the image of her mother appeared. She and Emily were real close - especially since the demise of her father in the war against Admiral Doenitz. =^= Hello Emily. How are you dear?=^= her mother asked. "funny you should ask Mom" Emily replied. "Hank and I are getting married.!" she all but shouted Her mom's image softened and Emily could see tears forming. "Mom why are you crying?" she asked her mom. Her mom smiled and answered. "^"Honey I am glad you and Hank are tying the knot. Hank is fine young man and I know he loves you a lot. I was thinking of you father and I. We were not much older than you and Hank"^" she Added quietly. The two stared quietly at one another. Emily had clear memories of the day SF came and gave her mother the news about her dad. Emily's mom broke the silence by asking =^= What date are you two thinking of making it official?=^= "Well, we are working the request through our chains of command. I hope in the next week or so. I hope to have you present Mom" Emily asked. =^= Well, that does not leave much time for me to get there. Let me know when the date is finalized=^= Emily's mom added. Emily nodded and thought for a moment. "I'll ask Lt Jackson my boss and see if he can get me an update and message you OK mom?" she asked. =^= thanks Honey. The murder of Captain Taylor had been solved, the murderer arrested and his holographic assassination program decompiled. At least the worst of it was now over. He had lifted the ban on the station-wide lockdown, and already the over-due freighters and cargo carriers were heading out of the system in the hopes of trying to salvage their shipments and get to their destinations on time. The martial Arts tournament had been suspended because of graft and the judges confined to quarters until it could be decided if there was ample evidence to bring them up on charges. It seemed more likely that they would lose their status rather than face criminal proceedings, but that was not for him to decide. He closed his eyes and tried to relax the muscles in his forehead, which of course, had just the opposite the desired effect. He slowed his breathing a little and allowed the tension to drain away a little before he focused his thoughts back to the situation on the Starbase. The level under Captain Taylor had been unlike anything that he had ever imagined. He had sent a special request to the Judge Advocate's Office for a special investigator to get to the bottom of the situation. He had been told that they would be dispatching no less than a team of investigators. At the very least, Ahmed thought that he would at least be able to allow his crew the long overdue shore leave that they had been denied as a result of the murder investigation. That one thought seemed to make everything alright, and Ahmed was smiling before too long. (reply none) Daniel Greene ===================================================================== (USS Rosenante - Holodeck 1 - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 11 - 0700) Eian stood beside his father and brother in front of a traditional pew in a church they had once regularly attended in Ireland. In fact, it was in this very church in Ireland that Starfleet had held the memorial service for Grace O'Neill. Jonah Chapel was a small church, capable of holding no more than seventy people, and that was at full capacity. It had been constructed in 1950, after World War II, in honor of those killed fighting for freedom. The fact that it had stood all these years was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the people of Trim, a small town in County Meath, Ireland. Even as war, weather, and time threatened its walls, the churchgoers had repaired it and reinforced its walls. Somewhat of a tourist attraction, the small church was open during regular business hours 7 days a week, and featured a gift shop larger than the church itself in a building nearby. But it still held regular services every holiday, Sunday morning, and Saturday evening. Of course, neither Eian, Liam, nor Glenn O'Neill were actually standing in the Jonah Chapel. Glenn and Liam were on the holodeck aboard the USS Kelman, and Eian was in a holodeck on the Rosenante. It was the first time this kind of technology had been tested. Of course, in the past there had been holographic images of someone in a different location to make it look like the person was present. But the person whose image looked relatively real to those present could only see a screen image of the other location. The closest anyone had come to what Eian had done was sticking a mobile emitter on an EMH and turning the matter phasing off. Liam placed his arm around Eian's shoulders and gave his son a supportive squeeze, and a smile. Eian smiled back at his dad. It was amazing that they were able to feel each other's touch, see each other's presence, as if they were actually together. "This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger," the pastor quoted from the Bible, a sacred and ancient book for Christians and others who followed similar religions. "Suddenly," the pastor continued, "A great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace.'" The service went on for another half hour, after which the fictional worshipers and fictional pastor left to socialize outside the church. Eian turned to his dad. "Ready to see the next portion of the program?" "Absolutely." "Let's let Murphy come to this one," Glenn said, and took off for the chapel doors. Eian's puppy came bounding in as soon as Glenn unlatched the gate to the side of the doors. Murphy ran right up to Eian and barked happily. Eian picked up the puppy and let his father pet him. Liam chuckled. "I can't get over how amazing this is. It looks like he's really here. It *feels* like he's really here." Ever the history buff, Eian smiled and said, "I'm guessing this is how people felt when they were able to video call each other for the first time, or talk to each other over the telephone." "Telephone?" Glenn asked. Eian smirked. "Come on, I've told you what a telephone is." "It's like a communicator, Glenn," Liam said, diffusing the argument before it could start. His younger son had never been interested in history, and seemed to purposely 'forget' facts Eian would share just to annoy his older brother. "Okay, whatever. Let's go," the eighteen-year-old said, and then commanded, "Computer, arch. Do your thing, Eian." "I'll enter the program in. You may want to take your shoes off and let the computer give you some sandals," he said with a grin. He carried Murphy over to the arch and activated the program. All around them, their surroundings shifted to a desert. The air was cool and there was a slight breeze. The sand dunes were all around them, but they were in a small village with native humans in ancient clothing. It was crowded in the tiny town--a census was going on and people from the surrounding land had returned to be counted. "They won't see us--I made it so we're observers only," Eian assured his father. It would be rather sacrilegious, Eian thought, to actually *participate* in the birth of Jesus, who Christians considered to be God on Earth. It would also spoil the story. He put Murphy down and let the dog run around in the sand. Then he took his shoes off and walked back to where his father and brother were standing, observing the scene with awe. "Seen it a hundred times but there's nothing like being here," Glenn said. "I want to go to Bethlehem, Dad. Why haven't we ever vacationed there?" "Because it's nothing like this," Liam said. "Go look up pictures of modern-day Bethlehem. It's lost its...I suppose...religious appeal." "I think it might be worth visiting sometime," Eian said. "Want to head to the manger?" Liam nodded, and led the way. Eian and Glenn had both visited holodeck programs with the recreation of the birth of Jesus, and although historical data and religious text was scarce on the ancient time, it was well-established that the manger existed in a stable on the outside of town in the direction of an extremely bright 'star' in the sky. They approached quietly, the small crowds of people dwindling away as they exited the main area of town and entered the outskirts. Sand entered Eian's holodeck-generated sandals and he felt it between his toes. It grounded him as he walked through this incredible time, this incredible moment in history. He felt almost overwhelmed with awe as the stable came into sight. Animals had been forced out of the small shelter, and a donkey rested on the sandy ground, clearly exhausted. A teenage boy of about seventeen lowered a pregnant teenage girl of about fourteen into a pile of hay on top of which he had laid his cloak. The Mediterranean teenagers' clothes and hair pegged them as Jews of the time. He held her hand and let her squeeze tight, the pain of childbirth causing her face to turn bright red. "He's coming, he's coming soon," young Mary said to her new husband Joseph. Undercurrents of fear laced through her voice--she was afraid something would go wrong. Without modern medicine, it was common that the child and mother would die in childbirth. "The Lord is with us, have faith," Joseph whispered to her, and she nodded quickly, clenching her teeth against the pain. She cried out as another contraction came, and a moment later Liam, Eian, and Glenn could all see baby Jesus' head. A small pail of water rested nearby, and Joseph dunked his hands into it before wiping them on his shirt, and preparing to assist with the birth. The teenager had never delivered a baby, and Eian saw the sweat on his brow and his carotid artery pounding at a rapid pace. He was extremely nervous, despite his words of encouragement to his wife. More screams. Words of encouragement from a teenage boy who was trembling himself. Sweat, dirt, and sand. The chill of the desert evening breeze, the dull glow of the town's lights behind them. This scene was the keystone of Liam, Eian, and Glenn's entire faith. A tiny cry sounded in the air, and Joseph's young hands held the baby Jesus as he pulled a hunting knife, wiped it on his pants, and cut the umbilical cord. He let the knife drop and grabbed a cloth from the hay, and used it to wrap the naked baby. He dried the baby's face gently with a 'clean' portion of the cloth, and held the baby close to him, tears of joy streaming from his and Mary's face. She began to laugh in joy, and he joined in. He dropped to one knee and handed her the little bundle, and they both cried together and praised their God. Liam, Eian, and Glenn sat down on a wooden board in the sand. They talked quietly about the marvel they had witnessed for the next hour, until they saw in the distance three dark-skinned men in relatively expensive dress riding on camels. They were clearly wealthy for their time, and possessed some kind of status. They rode up to the small stable, talking amongst themselves in awe of what they were seeing. When they approached, Joseph jumped to his feet in case they were a threat. But they dismounted the camels and dropped to their knees, praising God and asking for Joseph's permission to present gifts. After Joseph warily granted them permission, they knelt and bowed their heads as they presented painted wooden containers with gold, frankincense (a powerful perfume), and myrrh (a spice). They spoke to Joseph for a while, gave the young teenager words of encouragement and praised the baby Jesus again, and warned Joseph of what the powerful King Herod was doing, and that it might endanger the baby. Then they mounted their camels and rode away. The simulation accelerated slightly so that it showed Mary and Joseph going to sleep together in the stable with the baby Jesus between them, and then Joseph waking suddenly. It was apparent, Eian thought, that he had just had the dream in which the angel warns him of King Herod's plan to kill the babies under 2 years old, and that he should take his family to Egypt. The seventeen-year-old shook Mary awake and whispered, "Get up, we have to go." She stared at him groggily as though he had lost his mind and asked, "Where are we going?" "Egypt--the baby is in danger. Hurry, Mary, we have to go now." She didn't question the plan any further. Within minutes, what little belongings they had were packed on the donkey's back. Mary climbed up with Joseph's help, and then he handed her the baby. The young couple looked exhausted as they took off at a walking pace, Joseph leading the donkey away from the town. Eian rose, and noticed that Murphy had collapsed nearby and gone to sleep. He smiled at the sleeping puppy and picked him up. "Thanks, Eian," Liam said. "This was great--it's the best holovid I've seen yet." "I'd have to agree," Glenn said with a nod. Eian smiled at his family. "Thanks. What do you want to do now?" "Did you program the ice skating rink?" Glenn asked. Liam rolled his eyes. "How about we reflect a little first. We just witnessed the birth of our Savior. Let's get a nice living room setting, pray for a bit. Then we'll go skating." Eian nodded. "Alright, this I can do," he said, and ordered, "Computer, arch." Moments later, they had a living room with a burgundy couch, wooden-paneled walls, a rug in front of a fireplace, and a fire heating the area. Eian put the sleeping Murphy down on the rug and they sat on the couch. Liam took the Bible off the coffee table, and they spent some time reflecting on the impact of the glorious moment, and praising their Creator.
