After a few weeks returning from the edge of the beta Quadrant where they had been forced to rescue the crew of the USS Bohrs, the Rosenante had managed to aid the Bohrs in her repairs and to get the ship sent on it's way to their next mission. The Rosenante in the meantime was due for some hard-earned R&R and a few minor systems upgrades as well. Seeing that they were fairly close to Starbase 989, Ahmed had ordered the Rosenante to head that way to allow the crew to handle both their down time and upgrade needs at the same time. It was a sort of 'Two-birds-one-stone' concept, and it fit in nicely with his own plans which was to take some much needed relaxation time of his own. On the main viewer SB-989 hung in the orbit of a gas giant planet, THX-1138, whose roiling methane and ammonia atmosphere created a vibrant backdrop for the unusual Starbase. Already, the system was bustling with starships of various shapes and sizes; Romulan Merchants, Cardassian freighters, smaller pleasure craft and cargo carriers of all sorts and types. SB-989 was a major trading hub, between the United Federation of planets and The Romulan Star Empire. As such, a great many ships were coming and going from the system, seeking permission to operate there. But that wasn't the only really interesting thing about SB-989. To Ahmed's knowledge it was the only Federation Starbase that was not assigned an escort vessel to it's command. This was in part due to an agreement between the Romulans and the Andorians, who had originally constructed the station as a trading outpost. When the station had been turned over to Starfleet to use, the unique requirement that no vessel be assigned to the station's command had been maintained. Of course this had been off set by the large number of Starfleet vessels putting into port here. All of which understood that their role while around this sector of space would be to enforce Federation Laws, patrol against incursion and to provide starship support if requested. In command school they called it the 'Unwritten Directive.' "Mister Dralar, slow us to port speeds." Ahmed ordered as the Rosenante reached the outer station's navigational perimeter markers. "Aye captain." "Mister Soma get me the Starbase on the Horn. I'd like to take to someone in charge over there, so we can get a berthing assignment." (reply Soma) "Lieutenant, this is captain Salid of the Rosenante. I would like to request a berthing assignment for the ship so that we can arrange our scheduled upgrades and dismiss crew for some much needed R&R." (reply SB-989 FO) "Thank you lieutenant. I am under the understanding that there is a regional martial arts tournament taking place on board starting tomorrow. Can you tell me if it's still possible to sign up to participate? I have quite a few skilled Competitors aboard ship, who would love the opportunity to unwind with a good tournament." (Reply SB-989 FO) "Thank you Again Lieutenant. I appreciate your assistance. Salid out." Ahmed turned to Sullivan. "It looks like we'll be able to berth within the next couple of hours. That said, before we dismiss any crew, I'd like to hold a quick duty briefing for the senior crew. Call a senior staff meeting for 0900 hours today in the Observation lounge. Mandatory attendance. Once we've handled some of the ship's business, we'll release personnel for R&R." (reply Sullivan, SB-989 FO, Soma) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Bridge- ATAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, 0602) Ben had been settling in on the Rosenante and had been assigned a duty shift, he had also wasted little time in running drills and tactical excercises on the holodeck. Raschen had done an excellent job keeping the security and tactical departments in line and Ben didn't want to lose that edge, he wanted to be prepared for anything. He now stood at the tactical station as they approached SB 989, the crew were looking for some much needed R&R. "Mister Dralar, slow us to port speeds." Ahmed ordered as the Rosenante reached the outer station's navigational perimeter markers. "Aye captain." "Mister Soma get me the Starbase on the Horn. I'd like to take to someone in charge over there, so we can get a berthing assignment." Ben went to work at his station and established a link with the starbase. "Channel open Captain," Ben stated. "on viewer." As the image appeared Ben saw an Andorian with the rank of Lieutenant jg, he was puzzled that the stations Commander was not responding to thier hail. "I am Lt Krawk Stardase 989's acting First Offcier. What can we do for you Captain?" "Thank you lieutenant. I am under the understanding that there is a regional martial arts tournament taking place on board starting tomorrow. Can you tell me if it's still possible to sign up to participate? I have quite a few skilled Competitors aboard ship, who would love the opportunity to unwind with a good tournament.' "Captain, please send me their names and we will add them to the roster. The competition begins tomorrow morning" the Andorian replied. Ben liked the idea of competing in another tournament but couldn't help but think of what happened during the last one. This brought back memories of Marah, and he couldn't help but feel the old wound being torn open again. He wanted to find her but his duties took presidence. "Thank you Again Lieutenant. I appreciate your assistance. Salid out." 'Excellent Sir, our dock yard master is at your disposal. Once you are docked, please come see me and we can discuss anything else you wish to. Is there anything else?" Krawl asked. Ahmed turned to Sullivan. "It looks like we'll be able to berth within the next couple of hours. That said, before we dismiss any crew, I'd like to hold a quick duty briefing for the senior crew. Call a senior staff meeting for 0900 hours today in the Observation lounge. Mandatory attendance. Once we've handled some of the ship's business, we'll release personnel for R&R." Ben closed the channel as Sulivan announced the meeting to the department heads. He had a couple hours to go so he began to run a quick diagnostic on the tactical systems, if there was anything out of whack he wanted to be able to narrow it down in an attempt to help speed things up a little. Ios had been made the initial provisional leader. He hoped to come back in a few ears and see what progressthey had made. Tom's beloved Rose had suffered. She was dented, scarred and dirty. Steve Matrix and his team of magicianswere helping the Rosenante return to health. She and her crew needed down timel Jackson was looking froward for some time to reflect and read some old books his mum sent them to him. SB 989 was a smallish size star base. It was bustling and Jackson thought she'd grow.Lt. Dralar was ordered to enter orbit around the space station. Lt Soma opened a channel as ordered. A tall blue skinned Andorian wearing Lt (jg) Pips appeared. He regarded the view of the Rose's bridge crew and spoke."I am Lt Krawk Stardase 989's acting First Officer. What can we do for you Captain?" "Thank you lieutenant. I am under the understanding that there is a regional martial arts tournament taking place on board starting tomorrow. "Sullivan to Department Heads and all senior staff. There will be a senior staff meeting in the Observation Lounge at oh-nine-hundred hours. Attendance is mandatory, don't be late. Sullivan out." she announced then closed the channel. (Reply any, iyw) "Captain, do you remember my report?" she asked. (Reply Salid) "Do you want to handle that one negative issue before the staff meeting or after." she inquired. T'Larah knew that Captain Salid understood that she was refering to one of the medical techs assaulting their delta shift surgeon. PO2 Jim Morris was still residing in the brig waiting on the Captain's decision. T'Larah had dropped by after checking on Chance, and read Morris his rights. It was all in the report. (Reply Salid, any) (Posted by Todd) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Secondary Dorsal Shield Generators - ACOPS- Ensign Smith- Day 1 - 0612) Robert looked around that room he was in. It was housed the Secondary Dorsal Shield Generator which took up most of the large room. It was also a part of the ship that the crew hardly ventured as well being far away from most things as to not disturb other people with what he was going to do. ~Okay lets get this right okay~ He paused as he took a long slow breath as the readied himself. He put his trumpet to his lips, quickly ran his fingers over the vales a couple of times and played a long steady note. He paused as he listened to the note echo around the generator room. ~That sounds okay~ He slowly began to play his warm up routine. After running through ‘twinkle twinkle little star’ and he moved on to his jazz and classic big band collection. He started with some thing slow and quit, ‘Every time we say goodbye’ was followed by ‘Summer time’. He decided to speed things up with ‘Get Happy’ and ‘In the Mood.’ He paused for a moment before a slight grin passed across his face. ~I so hope on one is near by~ With that he ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’ as loud as he could. "Captain, do you remember my report?" she asked. "I do. I assume you mean concerning Petty Officer Morris?" Ahmed replied. "Do you want to handle that one negative issue before the staff meeting or after." she inquired. The captain gave it a moment's thought. Already the man had spent a few weeks in the brig waiting for the Captain to decide exactly what he was going to do. There was a lot to consider. The Petty Officer could very well be court martialled for his actions, or he could find himself reduced in grade and have Leave suspended indefinitely. The real reason he had remained where he was still in the brig hinged on two things. First the captain wanted to make certain that he was looking at the problem objectively. Second was that he wanted Morris to do the same and to actually consider the degree of trouble that he was in. Ahmed knew that he could not allow the Petty Officer to get by without punishment, but at the same time he wanted to temper that punishment so that he wouldn't lose a competent member of the crew either. "I want to meet with you immediately after the Staff meeting, on that and a few other points of ship's business. After we discuss the situation a bit further I will let you know how to proceed with mister Morris. Don’t you die on me, Don’t you die on me~ She leaned forward and gave mouth to mouth watching Bental’s chest rise and fall. ~Where is that crash trolley, Hurry up~ She moved back and began chest compressions again. She had just finished her third set of compression when the crash team arrived with the crash trolley. “I’m on my third of compression. Found him collapsed and unresponsive. 24 hours post op appendectomy, no relevant past medical history, previously fit and well. No allergies.” “I’ve got it from here Nurse E’Mpak. Start compressions, push adrenalin attach him to the defibrillator. Get the Amby bag fitted on high flow oxygen.” E’Mpak stepped back as the others attached the defibrillator to Bental’s chest and shocked his heart back into its regular rhythm. “Okay and we will stop there.” Every one paused and E’Mpak looked at the observer who had been monitoring there progress. ~I so hate these yearly up dates~ She looked over at Fuller who was nearby. “Well that was fun. Lets not do that again.” (Reply Fuller) The observer looked over at her. “Nurse E’Mpak you do realise that you broke his ribs?” E’Mpak nodded. “Yes Sir. I knew when I heard them crack but his life depended on the CPR and his ribs can be fixed in surgery later.” The observer just turned and tapped at his PADD. She knew that the CMO would get the report as well as the other reports on how the session went. “I really do hate these yearly up dates. It’s not like I am not competent in resuscitation training.” (Reply Fuller, any) (Posted by Robbie) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Sickbay – Chief Field Medic - SCPO Nathan Fuller - 0615) Nate hated annual reviews. Especially when Star Fleet was uppity enough to not even wait until they were docked. Especially when they had just spent the better part of a mission fighting for the lives of their injured crew. They sent a shuttle out from the star base with a team of medical proctors bound and determined to be a thorn in everyone's side. Currently E'Mpak was fighting to keep the simu-casualty alive. Nate had no clue why the proctor chose to do this eval in Sick Bay instead of in the holodeck where simulations belong, but Nate promised himself to make sure that little bit found it's way to the After Action Review. Soon the rapid response team relieved her. Her evaluation in Resuscitation was over. “Well that was fun. Lets not do that again.” E'Mpak said. "Who are you kidding? I'm up next." Nate said with a grin. “Nurse E’Mpak you do realize that you broke his ribs.” the proctor stated rather coldly. E’Mpak nodded. “Yes Sir. I knew when I heard them crack but his life depended on the CPR and his ribs can be fixed in surgery later.” The observer just turned and tapped at his PADD. Nate new the evals went to the CMO. He also knew that the proctor's evaluation was tilted to make the Klingon look bad. “I really do hate these yearly up dates. It’s not like I am not competent in resuscitation training.” E'Mpak said. Nate brought her aside and spoke in low tones so the proctor couldn't hear. "Don't worry about it. You are right, with out the manual compressions you gave him the simulation probably would have called him dead, however what he was talking about is that it only takes about 40kg of pressure to compress the ribcage enough to get a therapeutic effect. You were pushing I'd say about 50kg. The reason that breaking the ribcage is considered bad is that if you break them clean through the sharp bones now can sever the great vessels and other organs in the thoracic cavity. Then it doesn't matter how much you push on their chest after that they are going to circle the drain." (Reply E'Mpak) "I know, you were well with in IKDF guidelines which are, well pretty broad. Good news is I don't think it was different enough to fail you. Your patient survived and you pushed the antihistamine and the epinephrine just after that. He threw you a curve and gave you a post op patient that was allergic to the anesthesia. He might try to pull up the endangering the patient issue with your compressions, but I won't let him." Nate promised. (Reply E'Mpak) Well now it's my turn," Nate said. " and don't worry, I'll make sure he treats my nurses with a little more respect." (Reply E'Mpak) Nate returned her remark with a grin. "Trust me." E’Mpak gave a soft sight. “It’s just that Klingons are just physically stronger then humans.” She nodded as she replied, “Yes you are right. Puncturing a lung or slicing through the aortic artery, let alone doing giving him liver lacerations. Which would have quickened his passing to Sto-Vo-Kor. I really must remember that for next time.” "I know, you were well with in IKDF guidelines which are, well pretty broad. Good news is I don't think it was different enough to fail you. Show that petaQ what we can do.” (Reply Fuller, any in sickbay) (Posted by Robbie) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Personal Quarters - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - 0630) Eian walked out of the bathroom and into his bedroom to pull a pair of pants and a shirt on. He had woken up early and run two miles before practicing his martial arts in the holodeck. He was looking forward to the tournament, and had entered his name on the roster of officers and enlisted hoping to participate on Starbase 989. He was especially good at hand-to-hand combat, mostly because those who didn't know him greatly underestimated him. One didn't look very intimidating when one was only 5'4" and 145 lbs. But Eian had extensive training from the time he was a child, and had a knack for predicting his opponent's moves. He walked over to his replicator and ordered some eggs and bacon with orange juice, a biscuit, and a side of yogurt. The senior staff briefing wouldn't start for another few hours and he had plenty of time to eat a big breakfast and call his dad. Just when he sat down, his computer chimed that a subspace message was coming through. He rolled his eyes and got up, walking over to the desk. His expression brightened when he saw that it was, in fact, his dad calling. He quickly accepted the message and grinned. "Hey, Dad!" "Eian, how are you?" Liam O'Neill asked with a slight Irish accent, his expression cheerful. His graying red hair was neatly combed and he had a dressy collared shirt on. Behind him, an eighteen-year-old boy with short but wavy red hair bent down to see the screen. "Hey, Eian," Glenn O'Neill chimed in. "Hey, Glenn. I'm doing fine--we're docked at Starbase 989 now. I was just going to give you guys a call. Perfect timing." "Whatcha buy me for Christmas?" Glenn asked jokingly, and Eian laughed. "I got you a joint gift this year, and it's on its way to the Kelman." Liam served as the first officer aboard the USS Kelman. "Did you get me anything?" he asked with a smile. "You might find a surprise on Starbase 989 waiting for you in the cargo bay. I put it in your name," Liam told his son, and Glenn interrupted, "But if you open it before Christmas, it'll self-destruct and explode blue paint all over the room." Eian chuckled. His brother was a terrible liar, and he would have been able to detect that fib even if he hadn't gone through extensive lie detection training. "Thanks, Glenn. I love you too." "We have some exciting news, Eian. Glenn, why don't you do the honors." "You're gonna have some competition out there, Eian, 'cause I got in!" Glenn said with a proud grin. "You got your acceptance letter? That's awesome! Congratulations!" "He leaves for the Academy on January 10th," Liam said, though Eian could detect a certain sadness in the older man's eyes. "That's awesome," Eian repeated. "I'll have to give you the low-down on the Academy, Glenn. When Dad's not here to supervise." Liam rolled his eyes. "I'm just glad you're not both there at the same time. There might not be any of the Academy left if that were the case." The boys chuckled, and Eian was about to speak when Liam interrupted. "Glenn, why don't you go get ready?" "Sure, okay. I'll talk to you later, Eian. I'm sure before Christmas." "Yeah, we can talk tomorrow if you want," Eian said as his brother waved and walked away. He turned to his dad. "What's up? Where are you guys going?" "Glenn's in a holiday chorus with two other kids on the ship. One's Jewish and one's Muslim--how's the luck with that, huh? It's the first time the ship has had enough people to host a chorus without any holo-characters. They're all going to give a brief explanation of their religion and then they'll be singing traditional holiday songs and reading poems." "I'll bet Glenn's happy to have two other kids on the ship who practice Earth religions." "He and the Muslim boy, Sujan, are really good friends. The Jewish girl is only thirteen--a little too young for him to hang out with. But he did go to her Bat Mitzvah. Listen, Eian, I wanted to talk to you for a moment." "Sure. What's up?" Eian asked curiously. "I know you're busy with your first assignment and this isn't an order, this is a request." He looked behind him to make sure he was alone, and then turned back toward the screen. "The Academy did a thorough exam and I'm sure they wouldn't accept your brother before he's ready, but I want you to keep an eye on him. He's a good kid and he means well but you know how he can be. He makes decisions without really thinking them through." Eian laughed. "And I don't?" Liam rolled his eyes. "You at least recognize a bad decision once you've made it." "Why, what's he done?" "Nothing terrible, Eian." He sighed. "You don't need to know the details. Let's just say it was a...romantic indiscretion. That he's now in trouble for." Eian started to laugh, the thought entering his mind of his dad walking in on Glenn and some girl from the ship making out on the couch. But then he stopped, and saw the true concern in his father's eyes. Grace O'Neill's death had hit their family hard, and Liam had arguably suffered the most, attempting to handle one teenager and one Academy cadet while simultaneously dealing with his own grief over the loss of his wife. Eian saw his father age considerably, and two years later, he was now facing the prospect of his youngest son going away to the Academy. "I'll check in on him, Dad. Promise." Liam nodded. "Good, thank you." He leaned back, and changed the subject. "So are we still on for Christmas day?" "I can't say for sure, but I'll let the Captain know that I'm requesting to have the day off so we can host the prayer session on subspace and try out that holo-subspace simulation in the holodeck." In his spare time, Eian had rigged a holodeck program to link in with subspace communications so that people in two different locations could experience the same program at once. Although he hadn't worked out a visual display yet, he would be able to hear his father and his brother as they went to the same Christmas religious service and as they went to a simulation of the birth of Jesus Christ, a human that Christians believed was God on Earth and whose birth they celebrated on Christmas. "I've booked the holodeck here," Liam said with a smile. "And it means a lot to us that you programmed the simulation, Eian." "It's not a problem," Eian responded, returning the smile. It was going to be the first Christmas that they had spent apart, and their second Christmas without Grace. "Well, we've got to get going. I'm sure you've got some work to do too. So I'll talk to you later, Eian. Love you." "Love you too, Dad. Bye." Eian ended the transmission, and went over to his breakfast. When he finished, it was considerably less then 15 minutes, but Nathan reported to the CMO's office anyway. When he arrived, Ichijo offered him a seat. Nate sat as offered. "Thank you for coming, I had a opportunity to read your and securities report concerning the issue at hand and I am curious if there was anything that you wish to add to it?" "No, sir, my report stands as is. What gave you the idea that I was withholding anything?" Nate asked generally curious. "This is not to imply that you were less then forthcoming in your report, my question is to better understand why contrary to standing guidelines and mission orders, Petty Officer Morris felt that a stable case took precedence over a critical patient, based on their uniform" ~Why don't you ask Morris?~ "Honestly, I'm not a counselor or any sort of psychotherapist, but I've seen something like it before. Back in the Cardassian war. There was a security officer that took the concept of enemy to heart." Nate answered quickly and honestly. "I see" The doctor stated."and how do you believe this came to be?" "I guess some people's emotions aren't flexible enough. They get that focus in them, you know 'us vs. them', and they can't turn it off. It might be a form of post traumatic stress, but you'd have to ask the counselors." he finished. "Thank you for your candidness and your time, Chief Fuller." Dr Ichijo finished. He had left in plenty of time so as to not be late, of course, but he was moving slowly to insure that Ben Soma got there first. On their previous assignment, Sanok and Ben would often compete to see who would be at a briefing first. It wasn't anything that was declared or spoken, but something unsaid between them. What Ben didn't know, was that Sanok, in his own sense of humor, allowed Ben to always be there first. Ben would let him know he was first, and Sanok pretended to be properly chastised for taking longer to get there. It was something Sanok actually looked forward to, though he never admitted it. Now that he had been reunited with his friend, at least temporarily, as Ben could still be assigned to another ship, Sanok revived the tradition. When Sanok arrived, several others were already there, and Ben was one of them, though he was talking with the FO. Sanok quietly found an empty chair and sat down, folding his hands on the table in front of him. That was the truth, Ben was no longer confined nor did he face the threat of execution. So far his time aboard the Rosenante was relaxing compared the last couple months. He had been reunited with Sanok which he was happy about, he knew the Vulcan was aswell even though he'd never admit it to anyone. "I have enjoyed my time here so far." Ben added. "I assume there has been a decision made about my situation." Ben said. "Yes a decision has been made, and approved. Phil Sheridan had been a major help in getting the reports together. The Rose would need a few weeks to get shipshape again as well. The crusty old chief had alerted him about two junior enlisted folks that had become engaged. Tom needed to speak to PO Graatz about that. He was envious of her and her happiness. He had prepared adequately beforehand, and having exercised, gotten a good breakfast, taken his stimulant, and spoken with his family, he was in a good mood and didn't think a meeting could ruin it. He sat down and nodded a greeting to his fellow officers, picked up the PADD, and quickly went over the necessary points. He had decided to wait until the end of the meeting to ask the Captain for use of the holodeck on the 25th and for permission to test his holo-subspace program prior to Christmas. He suspected that what he had done had surely been programmed before, but he didn't think anyone had been successful at getting a visual image of the people in the other location to appear in a holodeck. If he kept working on it, he was sure he could get it to work so that multiple people in different locations could be "together" on a holodeck, experiencing the same program. He waited for the briefing to begin. The Irlixian campaign had shaken him a bit, not his confidence but his peace of mind. It had helped to deliver the mad dictator to the starbase and get him off the ship, while here Louis had avoided the brig area and tried not to think of the man held there. He took a seat and tried to relax before the meeting started. The captain arrived right on time. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - aCMO, Ens Kimiko Ichijo, Day 1, 0858) Kimiko slid into the observation room with seconds to spare. She had been up all night working on a presentation for the medical department. It had come to her attention that when Wyler left, the medical staff didn't feel as if the CMO had been replaced. She had read several articles about assuming leadership of an established department, but none of them had seemed right. ~I guess I could try the Kessler method, find a hapless soul and make his life hell. Better leadership though fear and intimidation.~ She had a good idea of who the victim would be if she decided on the course of action. Kimiko shook her head as she took her seat by Dr Lopez. She pulled up her Padd and waited for the meeting to start, a smile drifted across her face as she remembered a quote that was stuck on a cooling unit at the hospital that she interned at. ~The beatings will continue until morale improves~ Her mind drifted back to a conversation that she had had with Chief Fuller, a couple of weeks ago. The CMO walked into the main sickbay a hour before her scheduled time, where she just happened to bump into Chief Fuller. “Good morning, Chief Fuller” Kimiko greeted. “ I would like to speak with you, concerning the fracas in Sickbay, do you have a moment?” (Reply Fuller) “Good, this won’t take long” The doctor replied. “If you would like finish up and grab a drink, I will meet you in the conference room in fifteen minutes” Kimiko went to her office and downloaded the shift log into her padd and checked to see if there were any urgent messages. Kimiko thought, there seemed to be some kind of undercurrent spreading around sickbay that wasn’t there when she left. Perhaps if she had a little more experience in her position, she could ferret it out, but that was not here and now, she needed to resolve it now. She grabbed a cup of tea and went to the conference room to wait for Fuller. When the man arrived, she motioned to a chair and stated. "thank you for coming, I had a opportunity to read your and securities report concerning the issue at hand and I am curious if there was anything that you wish to add to it?" (Reply Fuller) "This is not to imply that you were less then forthcoming in your report, my question is to better understand why contrary to standing guidelines and mission orders, Petty Officer Morris felt that a stable case took precedence over a critical patient, based on their uniform" (Reply Fuller) "I see" The doctor stated."and how do you belive this came to be?" Kimiko knew that as an officer she must appear to have everything in control and be knowledgeable of the correct management of her personal and to elicit advice from a subordinate ran counter to that image, but only a fool remained lost in an unknown country, because he was to proud to ask for directions. (Reply Fuller) "Thank you for your candidness and your time, Chief Fuller." Kimiko snapped out of her reverie when the Captain looked at her. "Medical. Doctor Ichijo and Doctor Lopez, We are scheduled to upgrade the Medical Database once the core updates and maintenance are finished. I leave it to you to verify that all the data as well as any specialized equipment needed to handle the new procedure is in place prior to departure." "I also see that we have several of our crew that are overdue for their yearly, myself included. You will see to it that your department handles those exams prior to our departure. In addition I want a complete restock of all depleted medical stores." Dr Lopez replied for the medical department, she thought of the last update the had received ~I doubt that it will be nearly as extensive as the last one~ the doctor thought. The meeting ended with promotions all around. ~all in all, not a bad way to end a meeting~ She thought and they were dismissed. Kimiko thought to stay and solicit a little unofficial advice, but she saw the FO still seated and decided maybe later. (Reply Fuller) (Posted by Jack) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 1, 0900) Ahmed strode into the Observation lounge with a spring in his step and a smile on his face. Just minutes before he had received a communiqué from a friend of his at the JAG Corps giving him an update on the Nakamura case. The news was good, and that coupled with the prospect of taking a little time off and relaxing put Ahmed in a better than average mood. It seemed that today everything was going to go well. After all, what could possibly go wrong aboard Star base 989? He nodded at the assembled officers as he made his way around the long table to take his place at the head of the table, where he belonged. He placed the small stack of hardwood boxes on the table in front of him before settling comfortably in his chair. "Good Morning everyone." Ahmed intoned. He allowed a broad smile to cross his face. It was one of those things that he normally kept in check because there wasn't always time for such small frivolities in his life. Still today had brought good news and he was determined to share it with his crew. "We have some ship's business to discuss today." he began, still smiling. There is a great deal to cover, so we won't waste any time. Our meeting will begin momentarily with departmental status reports and then we'll move on to other business before we dismiss the briefing and the crew for some much needed R&R." Ahmed's smile broadened. "Before we begin with that however, I wanted to bring you all up to date on the case against Nakamura." "As you all know, Ono Nakamura was the man responsible for the perversion of the Irlixian culture, which he performed by breaking the Prime Directive. He was responsible for a number of deaths including those of his own away team as well as Captain Brightman of the Bohrs. He was also in violation of several civil rights violations including but not limited to kidnapping and illegal detention and mistreatment of prisoners." He noticed a series of nods around the table. Of course his crew knew all of this already, it was the Rosenante crew that had determined the truth behind the Irlixian corruption and had managed to bring Nakamura to justice. "I received a message from a friend of mine in JAG Corps today. The preliminary trial has determined that Nakamura is criminally insane. He has been ordered by the court to be confined for psychological rehabilitation at the Larson Penal Facility for a period of thirty years without parole. As you all know, due to his advanced age, that is basically a life sentence. Larson is renowned for their harshness and their excellent track record of securing high-profile prisoners. It is the facility that held several high-ranking members of the Doenitz regime, after the civil war ended. I feel that this outcome is suitable and fair and wanted to pass this on to you personally." Ahmed allowed the news to sink in for a few moments before moving on with the briefing. After a few moments, "Now that I've shared that bit of news, let's move on to the Departmental reports. Let's begin with Engineering." "Mister Matrix and Mister O'Neill. I understand that you have some status updates for me?" (reply Matrix, O'Neill room for more) "Very good, One of the upgrades that we are having done while we are here involves an upgrade to the shield capacitors that will allow a faster shield integrity recovery rate. We will also be upgrading the THIS targeting matrix as well as the bay loaders in our torpedo bays. Mister O'Neill I'd like for you to oversee those upgrades and to have them inspected prior to our departure." (reply O'Neill) "Additionally, mister Matrix, we are overdue for a Dilithium chamber cleaning and a micro fracture inspection on all primary M/AM components. I'd like for you to see to it that all work performed by station yard personnel is inspected and meets criteria prior to our departure." (reply Matrix) "Moving on to operations." Ahmed said as he shifted mental gears. "We will be taking on a new class of runabout mister Jackson. As a result I want all normal stocks of rotables and maintenance supplies for the Lorimar Class Runabout brought aboard and stowed. I also understand that we will be taking on two of the craft. I will need you to see to it that they are inspected prior to assuming responsibility for them and that we have all the equipment and service manuals needed to repair and maintain the runabouts prior to our departure from SB-989." (reply Jackson) NRPG: http://startrekfreedom.com/wiki/index.php/Lorimar_Class_Runabout "Mister Smith, I need a complete inventory of all the ship's stores. We are to take on all materials needed to top off our supplies and I'd like to see a ten percent reserve stock of the more critical materials as well. In addition we are coming up on a scheduled computer core overhaul and since you are our resident computer expert I'd like for you to oversee that process and perform the necessary inspections of the system prior to departure." (reply Smith) "Tactical." Ahmed stated shifting his attentions to his tactical and security department, "I need a complete armory inventory and for all outdated equipment to be upgraded or replaced as needed. In addition, I will need you to bring our tactical crews up to date on the use of the new THIS system and the bay launchers once they are handled completed by engineering. Ship security is to handle security sweeps of the ship throughout the entire time that we are here. While we are no longer at war with anyone, there are a number of individuals who wouldn't mind sabotaging a Starfleet vessel while they are vulnerable. As senior officer mister Soma, that will fall to you. Mister Sanok will be available to assist you as needed." (reply Soma, Sanok) "Medical. In addition I want a complete restock of all depleted medical stores." (reply Ichijo, Lopez) "Sciences." Ahmed said as he shifted his attention towards the only science officer present. "Mister Remey, we are expecting a new Bariospectrometer to join the one that we have currently in the astrometrics lab. Once it is installed, I would like for you to oversee the calibration and testing of the equipment." (reply Remey) "Very good. Does anyone else have anything they need to add to our agenda concerning departmental status or needs?" (reply any) When all the discussion about the departments was concluded Ahmed moved on to the next stage of the briefing. The part that he liked the most. "Mister O'Neill, Front and center." He said with a smile. (reply O'Neill) "In recognition of your excellence to uphold the responsibilities of Star Fleet, I am pleased to promote you to the rank of Ensign Senior Grade. Starting Immediately you will receive all the responsibilities and privileges associated with your new rank. You are also hereby assigned the position of Assistant to the Chief Engineer." Ahmed reached up and removed the hollow pip from O'Neill's uniform tunic and replaced it with a shiny gold pip indicating his increase in rank. The captain gave the man his empty case that contained the hollow pip. "Congratulations Ensign." He said. (reply O'Neill) Once O'Neill had resumed his seat, Ahmed continued. "Mister Matrix. I am pleased to confirm that going forward you are now the Chief Engineer of the Rosenante. Congratulations." (reply Matrix) Ahmed turned his attention to Lieutenant Soma. "Mister Soma. BUPERS has confirmed that you will now be permanently assigned to the Rosenante. In addition, you have been promoted to the position of Chief Tactical and Security Officer. Congratulations Lieutenant." (reply Soma) "Mister Sanok, you skill and efficiency have been noted and you are effectively promoted to the position of Assistant to the Chief Tactical and Chief Security Officer." (reply Sanok) "Mister Remey, effective immediately you have been assigned the position of Acting Chief Science officer. Congratulations Ensign" (reply Remey) "Mister Ichijo, Your position has been confirmed as Chief Medical Officer. Congratulations." (reply Ichijo) "Mister Lopez, in recognition of your skill, your position as assistant to the chief medical officer is hereby affirmed. In addition, I would like for you to put together a plan to cross-train a group of medical personnel with the Rosenante's security forces." (reply Lopez) "Mister Jackson. For all your years of dedicated service and for showing determination in the face of adversity as well as your unswerving loyalty to the oaths of the Federation. It is my honor to promote you to the position of Second Officer of the Rosenante. In addition to bridge duty, you will remain as the operations department head. Congratulations lieutenant. You've earned it." (reply Jackson) "In addition to the promotions I just outlined, there are two commendations that were issued under my recommendation. And I quote, 'To Lieutenants Doug Masters and Ben Soma, The Office of commendation Review under the authority of the United Federation of Planets has seen fit to confirm the recommendation of Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, USS Rosenante Commanding, in the award and presentation of the Gold Lifesaving Medal, pursuant to actions of bravery and heroism which resulted in the rescue and recovery of Starfleet personnel at risk to themselves. In keeping with the highest honors and traditions of Starfleet these medals are hereby granted in gratitude for services rendered on Irlix, above and beyond the call of duty." "Mister Soma, front and center." As Soma approached Ahmed handed the man the display case showcasing his medal. "Congratulations lieutenant. Lieutenant Master's CO will be presenting his medal to him at the next available opportunity." (reply Soma) "And now to our most pleasant part of the briefing. Details on R&R." Ahmed said, his smile, surprisingly broadening even more than it had been prior. "Once this briefing is dismissed, all departments will reduce their on-duty Rosters to the minimum required to handle the additional duties that I have just assigned you. All personnel on this ship, myself included are entitle to a minimum of tens days of shore leave. We want this to be as relaxing for the crew as possible, so please try to take that into consideration when planning your rotations." "No crew are permitted to travel off the station unless they have acquired specific permission from myself prior." "In addition, if you have not already heard, there are available slots open for the Martial Arts competition on the star base, but participants must sign up tonight by 2100 hours if they wish to compete. you are to make it adequately clear that we are here to relax and that does not mean that we are here to tear the place down. Crew will remain professional while on the station or they will deal with me. Believe me no one wants me involved if trouble is started here without good cause." "Are there any questions?" Once all questions had been answered, Ahmed said, "Dismissed, then and have a good time." (Reply by any) (posted by shawn) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - CEO Lieutenant Steven Matrix, Day 1, 0903) Matrix was relaxed. Partly due to the fact he was again aboard the Rosenante, but rumor had it R&R was to be announced shortly. Mentally and physically he felt good. Engineering was running well and so was the rest of the ship. Now at a space station those nagging updates and repairs would be addressed. Matrix sat with his usual PADD in front of him at the large table of assembled department heads and senior officers. He noted the wooden boxes at the head of the table. At that moment he observed the Captain walking around the table and take his place at the head of the table. The news of Ono Nakamura wasn't all that unexpected, but the details answered a number of questions that Matrix contemplated since being back aboard the Rosenante. While the news wasn't good, it wasn't all that unexpected. He had heard both good and bad things about Nakamura, but this news detailed how severely the lines had been crossed. Matrix felt a sense of anger that he and his away team was put into a position of danger, largely because of a single person. His injury reminded him of the risks he and everyone took while on the Irlixian home world. "Mister Matrix and Mister O'Neill. I understand that you have some status updates for me?" said Salid. "Aye Sir. We're working through a few anomalies with the port nacelles and computer core response times. The port nacelle is showing a dip in efficiency, but we've found nothing so far to indicate a problem. Its likely a sensor issue and will be addressed shortly. The computer core experienced a slight lag in performance that was due to a significant call for computing resources. This was unexpected, but due to a processor bank failure in the secondary processor bank. I've scheduled a replacement while we're docked along with a complete fresh of the primary memory cores. Repairs have been completed on all weapons and environmental systems. At this time all systems operational and ready for duty as commanded." replied Matrix. "Very good, One of the upgrades that we are having done while we are here involves an upgrade to the shield capacitors that will allow a faster shield integrity recovery rate. We will also be upgrading the THIS targeting matrix as well as the bay loaders in our torpedo bays. I'd like for you to see to it that all work performed by station yard personnel is inspected and meets criteria prior to our departure." "Yes sir, the station crews and my teams are staging the propulsion system at this time. Refresh will be ready prior to departure." replied Matrix. Matrix sat back down and listened to the other department updates while reviewing his PADD information and checking schedules. Almost lost in his scheduled updates he heard his name again... Ahmed continued. "Mister Matrix. I am pleased to confirm that going forward you are now the Chief Engineer of the Rosenante. Congratulations." Matrix looked up, caught by what he thought he heard and smiled, "Thank you sir!" replied Matrix. The news was a surprise, but perhaps not all that unexpected. After all he was CEO aboard the Geneva and the Paladin. Matrix reflected on that briefly and smiled as he listened to the remaining promotions and accolades. A few officers sitting near him also congratulated him on the new position. Ensign Peter Cohen leaned over to Matrix, "Congrats Matrix...you've earned it." Matrix smiled back, almost beaming. (Reply none) (Posted by Steve) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 1 - 0904) Eian paid full attention as the Captain went over the news about Nakamura. The sentence didn't surprise him and seemed appropriate for the amount of destruction the man had caused. The psychologist in him thought it would be interesting to complete a full profile on the man and follow him through his rehabilitation, to see if any change had been enacted or if Nakamura was permanently incompetent. Eian also found it interesting that the Captain stated that Nakamura had been found criminally insane. He remembered the briefing after the mission, and the recounting of Nakamura's statements as to why he did what he did. It sounded as though he had a rational, albeit wrong and inexcusable, reason for what he did. One of the first things Eian learned about criminal profiling in the Academy was that there was a big difference between criminally minded and criminally insane, and that it rested on the capacity of the subject to reason. But he wasn't the one to test Nakamura and he didn't have all the facts. He was confident that Starfleet had done a thorough job in handling the situation. He was thrilled when engineering was allowed to go first in the briefing. ~I might be able to listen to what other people say, now,~ he thought. Matrix answered the Captain's request for a report first. He gave a brief overview of what was going on with the nacelles and the computer core. Then it was Eian's turn. "Weapons systems and security systems are operating at peak efficiency, Sir. Holodeck 1 has undergone a holo-emitter swap-out, as it was time to replace the older ones. We'll need to pick up three extras from Starbase 989. There was a replicator malfunction in Crewman Leslia's quarters...she ordered a pretzel and it managed to replicate forty-three of them before we got it to stop. But that's repaired and the problem was an isolated incident connected to Leslia's replicator's specific scanning matrix." "Very good," the Captain responded. "One of the upgrades that we are having done while we are here involves an upgrade to the shield capacitors that will allow a faster shield integrity recovery rate. We will also be upgrading the THIS targeting matrix as well as the bay loaders in our torpedo bays. Mister O'Neill I'd like for you to oversee those upgrades and to have them inspected prior to our departure." "Yes, Sir. I look forward to it," Eian answered. He loved working with the weapons and security/safety systems aboard the ship, and as his expertise was tailored to that kind of work, he was pleased to see that his superiors assigned him to those duties frequently. As they moved on through the meeting, it was mentioned that they would be taking on new Lorimar-class runabouts. Eian couldn't wait to see them and, if a mission permitted, fly them. One of his hobbies was flight, and he had a flight certification from Starfleet. Yearly medical exams were mentioned a little later as well, and Eian realized that as a newcomer aboard the ship, he would be obligated to take a physical. Some more departments reported and Eian zoned out until the Captain suddenly said, "Mister O'Neill, front and center." For a second, he thought he had been caught daydreaming and was about to get reprimanded. But he was able to quickly analyze the expression on the Captain's face as one of enjoyment and pride, not annoyance. His eyes fell on the boxes at the head of the table and he realized what this was about. He smiled, and complied with the order. "In recognition of your excellence to uphold the responsibilities of Starfleet, I am pleased to promote you to the rank of Ensign Senior Grade. Starting immediately you will receive all the responsibilities and privileges associated with your new rank. You are also hereby assigned to the position of Assistant to the Chief Engineer." The Captain removed the hollow pip from Eian's collar and replaced it with a shiny gold pip. Then Salid placed the hollow pip in the solid pip's case and handed it to Eian. "Congratulations, Ensign," he said. Eian couldn't help but smile as he replied, "Thank you, Sir." He then took a seat and was congratulated by several of his colleagues. Nearly everyone else got a promotion as well, and Eian was almost too preoccupied with his own promotion to remember that he wanted to ask for permission to use the holodeck. After the Captain went over the basics about the station and reminded them to sign up for the martial arts tournament by 2100 that evening, they were dismissed. Eian waited for everyone else to leave while he tried to formulate how he would ask the question. He knew nothing about the Captain's religious beliefs, and had encountered quite a few Starfleet Officers in the past who did not show much respect for his religion. For some reason, there was a bit of a double standard that some human officers showed, that Eian had witnessed his entire life, that they showed the utmost respect for other species' religions but none for their own species' ancient practices. He had learned to phrase his explanations differently, depending on what the other person's facial expressions and body language showed him. Another obstacle, especially in this particular conversation, was that because of ADHD, Eian never developed the natural ability most humanoids had of instantly interpreting facial expressions and body language. In consequence, he received extensive training as a child and young adult as to how to interpret different species' body language and facial expressions, choice of words and tone of voice. But it required him to "stare" at a person when it was necessary to know what the other person was thinking, and this made many people uncomfortable. Particularly humans who were already uncomfortable with Eian's religion. Eian put these thoughts aside when everyone but Lt. Commander Sullivan had left. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - ATAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, 0905) The briefing began and Ben settled back in his chair as the Captain gave them an up date on the Nakamura case, it disturbed him to have learned that a Starfleet officer was at the heart of the crisis that had arisen on Irlix but there was also a small part of him that understood it but could not condone it. The sentence handed down seemed fair enough though being declared criminally insane was letting him off a little lightly. Ben knew first hand about the treatment of prisoners even though he hadn't suffered to the extent of most of the others, he had to thank Fornix for that. If not for his compassion Ben would have been drifting off in a torpedo casing by now. The Captain continued with the updates that would be received, most interesting of which was the tactical systems upgrades for the shields and launchers. They were also taking on two new runabouts, he'd have to look them over in more detail but the new craft were way ahead of thier predecessor in many ways. The Captain called for status updates from from the department heads and Ben listened attentively as news of the ships condition became public knowledge. The Captain eventually came to tactical. "Tactical." Ahmed stated shifting his attentions to his tactical and security department, "I need a complete armory inventory and for all outdated equipment to be upgraded or replaced as needed. Mister Sanok will be available to assist you as needed." Ben understood what the Captain was driving at. "I'll get to work on the inventory after the briefing." Ben said. "I'll see to it that the rotation will give everyone equal time to enjoy what the station has to offer. I'll work out a schedule with Sanok to ensure the ship is adequately secured while we are docked. Once the upgrades are completed I'll begin drills to familiarize everyone with the operations of the launchers and the THIS system." Once the ships business was out of the way Captain Salid turned his attention to the stack of boxes he had carried in, promotions and assignments were then handed out as the Captain began calling officers forward. Ben was somewhat surprised when his name was called. "Mister Soma. BUPERS has confirmed that you will now be permanently assigned to the Rosenante. In addition, you have been promoted to the position of Chief Tactical and Security Officer. Congratulations Lieutenant." "Thank you Captain." Ben replied. He was surprised that he would be remaining aboard the Rosenante, he had assumed that he would be transfered back to the Mithrandir at the earliest convenience. He was happy with the decision as it allowed him to once again work at his friends side, the two had made a great team in the past and could only improve in the future. He listened as others were promoted and moved to new positions, he had only known them for a short period but felt all promotions whether they be rank or positional were well earned. As the Captain came to the end of his list Ben was again surprised to her his name. "In addition to the promotions I just outlined, there are two commendations that were issued under my recommendation. In keeping with the highest honors and traditions of Starfleet these medals are hereby granted in gratitude for services rendered on Irlix, above and beyond the call of duty." "Mister Soma, front and center." Ben stood and moved towards the Captain, he felt a sense of pride at the recommendation for the medal. Once again he wished he could share the news with his family and Marah. He came to perfect attention as he stopped in front of Captain Salid as he handed the display case to him. "Congratulations lieutenant. Lieutenant Master's CO will be presenting his medal to him at the next available opportunity." Salid said. "Thank you Captain." Ben began. "I'm honored to accept this medal." Ben then turned about and moved back to his seat, Salid notified them of the particulars of the R&R. The tournament was tempting but Ben wasn't sure if he would enter into it, after all the fighting he had just witnessed he wasn't sure if he wanted to engage in more. He would consider it during the day, no doubt Sanok would try to talk him into it anyway. His friend knew of his fondness for martial arts and had arranged to have Ben enter one before, though the results had been less then favorable. This time was a little different, this time it was being held on a starbase and what could possibly happen on a starbase. (reply any) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - COPs, LT tom Jackson, Day 1, 0906) Captain Salid began the briefing with an update about the Before we begin with that however, I wanted to bring you all up to date on the case against Nakamura." "As you all know, Ono Nakamura was the man responsible for the perversion of the Irlixian culture, which he performed by breaking the Prime Directive. He was responsible for a number of deaths including those of his own away team as well as Captain Brightman of the Bohrs. He was also in violation of several civil rights violations including but not limited to kidnapping and illegal detention and mistreatment of prisoners."The captain moved on his his update. Larson is renowned for their harshness and their excellent track recordof securing high-profile prisoners. It is the facility that held several high-ranking members of the Doenitz regime, after the civil war ended. I feel that this outcome is suitable and fair and wanted to pass this on to you personally." Several of the officers resent nodded as the captain had spoken. Jackson had to admit the sentence was reasonable. He smiled as the Engineer in Capain Salid came out as he issued orders to Steve's team. Tom's turn came soon enough. "Moving on to operations." Ahmed said as he shifted mental gears. and maintenance supplies for the Lorimar Class Runabout brought aboard and stowed. I also understand that we will be taking on two of the craft. I will need you to see to it that they are inspected prior to assuming responsibility for them and that we have all the equipment and service manuals needed to repair and maintain the runabouts prior to our departure from SB-989."replied. "AYE Captain - We 'll be ready' Jackson replied. He was thrilled at the prospect of a new craft to master. His list of needed dockyard repairs had been submitted to the Dockyard master. The departmental reports soon would up. This would give a reason to relax reading the dash 10 manuals and running the simulations in the holo suites. The captain introduced the newest members of Rose's family. They seemed qualified and nice people. Ahmed made some promotions and finalized some administrative appointments. Steve Matrix mas offcially made the Chief Engineer of the Rosenante. He was glad for his friend. The next announcement caught Jackson totally unaware. "Mister Jackson. For all your years of dedicated service and for showing determination in the face of adversity as well as your unswerving loyalty to the oaths of the Federation. It is my honour to promote youto the position of Second Officer of the Rosenante. In addition to bridge duty, you will remain as the operations department head. Congratulations lieutenant. You've earned it." People around the table smiled at Jackson's flushing face."Thank you captain - it is a great honor. I will do my best for the Rose" Tom replied. (reply skipper) (posted by: Bill) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - ACSO Louis Remey, 0907) Salid nodded at the officer as he entered and after taking his spot at the table began after setting a number of boxes on the table. "Good Morning everyone." The captain started formally then smiled atypically. It appeared some news of import was forthcoming. "We have some ship's business to discuss today. There is a great deal to cover, so we won't waste any time. Our meeting will begin momentarily with departmental status reports and then we'll move on to other business before we dismiss the briefing and the crew for some much needed R&R." His smile grew. He was also in violation of several civil rights violations including but not limited to kidnapping and illegal detention and mistreatment of prisoners." Louis' face flushed and he frowned at the news of the renegade officer. ~I hope they threw the book at him.~ "I received a message from a friend of mine in JAG Corps today. I feel that this outcome is suitable and fair and wanted to pass this on to you personally." So his words had been prophetic. ~It serves him right, the murdering bastard.~ "Now that I've shared that bit of news, let's move on to the Departmental reports. Let's begin with Engineering." There followed several minutes of departmental reports and orders from the captain concerning upgrades within engineering, tactical, medical and operatioins. "Sciences." Louis sat up straighter in his chair and nodded crisply at the captain. "Mister Remey, we are expecting a new Bariospectrometer to join the one that we have currently in the astrometrics lab. Once it is installed, I would like for you to oversee the calibration and testing of the equipment." ~A new toy, excellent! The old one was a bit temperamental.~ "Will do captain. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours for calibration after it is installed." "Very good. Does anyone else have anything they need to add to our agenda concerning departmental status or needs?" There followed a period of discussion after which Ahmed launched into promotions. Louis smiled and clapped as first O'Neill was promoted to ACEO followed by Matrix who was promoted to be his superior as CEO. A new man, Ben Soma was then transferred to the Rosenante and installed as CTAC/SEC. Sanok was then promoted to be his assistant. "Mister Remey, effective immediately you have been assigned the position of Acting Chief Science officer. Congratulations Ensign" Louis' eyes got wide at that pronouncement and he grinned in reply. "Thank you captain!" ~This will mean a lot more work. I'd better get on top of things immediately.~ Kimko Ichijo was then promoted to CMO and Lopez handed the permanent position as ACMO. The promotion of a second officer was unexpected and a pleasant surprise. Louis clapped the louder for Lt. Jackson. "Mister Jackson. For all your years of dedicated service and for showing determination in the face of adversity as well as your unswerving loyalty to the oaths of the Federation. It is my honor to promote you to the position of Second Officer of the Rosenante. In addition to bridge duty, you will remain as the operations department head. Congratulations lieutenant. You've earned it." "Thank you captain - it is a great honor. I will do my best for the Rose" The man replied. In keeping with the highest honors and traditions of Starfleet these medals are hereby granted in gratitude for services rendered on Irlix, above and beyond the call of duty." "Mister Soma, front and center." The award of a medal to Lt. Soma was also met with heartfelt applause. Then the captain began wrapping the meeting up. "And now to our most pleasant part of the briefing. Details on R&R." "Once this briefing is dismissed, all departments will reduce their on-duty Rosters to the minimum required to handle the additional duties that I have just assigned you. Believe me no one wants me involved if trouble is started here without good cause." "Are there any questions?" Louis shook his head slightly, he had none. (Reply: Any) It didn't take long before the questions wound down. "Dismissed, then and have a good time." Louis got to his feet and took a deep breath, there would be a lot more responsibility from here on in. He hoped he was up to it. (Reply: Any) (Posted by Charles) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 1 - 0914) Eian approached the Captain. "Sir, I have a personal request. It won't take long." (reply Salid) "I follow an old Earth religion called Christianity, Sir. And an extremely important holiday to our religion is approaching soon--it'll occur on Stardate 2413.12.25." (reply Salid) Eian smiled. This was working out quite nicely, far better than he ever expected. "Well, Sir, this is the first time my family and I have been apart for the holiday, and I've programmed a holo-simulation that I believe will allow us to connect a subspace channel to the holodeck and allow two separate parties to hear each other experience the same holo-program." (reply Salid) "I had that thought as well, Sir. So far, my work has only produced an auditory signal, but I think if I keep working on it, I may be able to produce a visual signal as well. Eventually, the separate parties may be able to not only hear each other but also see and feel each other in the holo-simulation. But I'll need to borrow a holodeck at least for twelve hours, sometime before the 25th, because my simulation is specifically programmed to let my family and I celebrate the holiday together. I'd like to work out the kinks before we try it out. And, of course, I'll need the holodeck for a minimum of six hours on the 25, as well, Sir." (reply Salid) (posted by Morgan G) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - aFO Lt. Cmdr T'Larah Sullivan - 0917) The briefing had passed and gone. T'Larah stayed behind as she was requested to earlier this morning. She had a feeling in her stomach. Disappointment? Had she not performed the job of First Officer adequately? Was she still on a probationary period? It was definitely not logical to feel this way, but why was she not given the First Officer position permanently? ~Obviously the probationary period is longer because of the massive responsibility that it entails.~ she told herself. The briefing room finally cleared out. T'Larah didn't leave her seat. "You wanted to speak to me sir?" she asked. (Reply Captain Salid) (Posted by Todd) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 1, 0918) "You wanted to speak to me sir?" Sullivan asked. "I did Commander, One second." Ahmed replied and then glanced over at O'Neill still waiting nearby drawing T'Larah's attention to the junior officer. "Can I help you mister O'Neill?" The captain inquired. Eian approached the Captain. "Sir, I have a personal request. It won't take long." "Very well, how can I help you then?" "I follow an old Earth religion called Christianity, Sir. And an extremely important holiday to our religion is approaching soon--it'll occur on Stardate 2413.12.25." O'Neill explained "Yes Christmas. I'm familiar with it." Ahmed replied with a nod, wondering exactly where this was going. Eian smiled and continued, "Well, Sir, this is the first time my family and I have been apart for the holiday, and I've programmed a holo-simulation that I believe will allow us to connect a subspace channel to the holodeck and allow two separate parties to hear each other experience the same holo-program." "Sounds useful." Ahmed said thoughtfully. "I had that thought as well, Sir. So far, my work has only produced an auditory signal, but I think if I keep working on it, I may be able to produce a visual signal as well. Eventually, the separate parties may be able to not only hear each other but also see and feel each other in the holo-simulation. I'd like to work out the kinks before we try it out. And, of course, I'll need the holodeck for a minimum of six hours on the 25, as well, Sir." Ahmed nodded. "I can understand your desire to undertake such a project. I myself have participated in three holographic Hajj simulations." He explained. he smiled then, "I appreciate religious tolerance and dedication, Ensign, but let me give you a single word of advise if I may?" (reply O'Neill) "Not everyone does. So while I encourage you to participate in your religion, as I participate in mine, I expect you to put your duty first and foremost. Let your religion and beliefs be your conscience, certainly, but don't let your duties and responsibilities fall by the wayside as a result. I see no reason why you can not have use of the holodeck, but I recommend that you reserve your time as soon as possible, and I wouldn't be surprised if you'll find that most if not all the available holodeck time is booked on the ship. If that turns out to be the case, you may have to make arrangements on the station. I understand that they have several dozen Holosuites available. Of course should there be time available aboard ship, you are as welcomed to it as the next officer. See Lieutenant Jackson to schedule time. Is there anything else Ensign?" (reply O'Neill) NRPG: To facilitate our plot for this mini-mission, I'd like for there to be no time available on the ship prior to 12.25. That will force Eian to go to the station and seek out the owner of the holosuites for time to work on his project. That individual will hopefully be introduced shortly by Todd. As for availability on 12.25 to conduct the actual event, I see no problems with that at all. So please play it out accordingly. "Very well then, Dismissed Mister O'Neill." once the short meeting with O'Neill was concluded, Ahmed turned back towards Sullivan and gave her a short smile. "Sorry about that." He apologized. "I suppose that you'd like to know your disposition concerning the position of First officer?" He asked her. (reply Sullivan) "You have an exemplary record commander. And I feel that you have done a wonderful job as acting First officer. I know that when I approached you about being the acting First officer that it was a probationary period. I wanted to be clear that I in no way want you to feel obligated to continue in that capacity if you have any doubts as to your ability to continue to fulfill your duties to the fleet and to the ship and her crew. That said, I had not yet had a chance to tell you that Starfleet Command has approved your position as a permanent one, should you choose to accept it. The position comes along with a promotion to full commander. I didn't want to announce anything until I had a chance to speak to you about it. What do you think Commander?" (reply Sullivan) NRPG: Assuming that Sullivan says yes. "Excellent." Ahmed replied and picked up the last wooden box remaining on the table. He opened it and with a smile, reached up and removed Sullivan's hollow pip from her collar and replaced it with the solid gold one from the case. "Commander Sullivan. I hereby promote you to the position of First Officer of the USS Rosenante. As such I charge you with the sometimes difficult task of safeguarding the principles of the United federation of Planets, protecting your shipmates and your ship, and always performing your duty to the best of your skill and ability. But just as importantly, I charge you with reminding me of my duties and obligations and with telling me when I am being pig-headed and making a mistake. Allah help you in the latter." (reply O'Neill, Sullivan) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 1 - 0919) After giving the Captain his proposal, Eian interpreted Salid's expression to be one of interest but he also had that familiar 'teaching moment' body language that Eian recognized. "I can understand your desire to undertake such a project. I myself have participated in three holographic Hajj simulations," the Captain said, and Eian smiled. It wasn't every day he encountered another Officer who practiced an old Earth religion. Serving under a Muslim captain, Eian thought, would ensure that he would at least get respect for his beliefs. "I appreciate religious tolerance and dedication, Ensign, but let me give you a single word of advice if I may?" The Captain continued. "Of course, Sir," Eian said readily. "Not everyone does. So while I encourage you to participate in your religion, as I participate in mine, I expect you to put your duty first and foremost." At this, Eian nodded eagerly. Salid continued, "Let your religion and beliefs be your conscience, certainly, but don't let your duties and responsibilities fall by the wayside as a result. I see no reason why you can not have use of the holodeck, but I recommend that you reserve your time as soon as possible, and I wouldn't be surprised if you'll find that most if not all the available holodeck time is booked on the ship. I'll let you know how the experiments turn out and if I'm able to produce a visual image." He couldn't wait to get started. "Very well then. Dismissed, Mister O'Neill." Eian left the briefing with spirits high. He had discovered that his Captain practiced a religion similar to his, and that he would be able to use the Holodeck to celebrate Christmas. He would have to track down Lieutenant Jackson soon and see about booking a time, and if there wasn't sufficient time available, he'd have to track down the person in charge of the holodeck on the station. From the Captain's advice, he reasoned that it wouldn't be a problem to take Christmas Day off of work as long as his duties had been completed ahead of time. He would have to talk to Matrix about that. He had a lot to do, but Eian was happiest when he was busy, so with a spring in his step he went to find Jackson. "Thank you sir, I won't disappoint you." she said. (Reply Salid) "With that being said. Are there any duties you are requiring of your first officer before she goes on shore leave?" she asked. (Reply Salid) (Posted by Todd) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Armory, CTAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, 1030) Ben had headed to the armory after the briefing was concluded, on his arrival he had called a semi formal meeting to pass along the assignment of doing a complete inventory of the Rosenante's equipment related to the security department. Now he was going through the computer records to see what equipment was supposed to be aboard as the teams were visually inspecting and counting the equipment they found. He wanted to make sure everything was accounted for and was in working order, anything that wasn't up to spec was to be recorded and removed from the storage lockers and brought back to the armory where it was to be crated up and transferred to the to the starbase for replacement or repair. Ben was still getting used to the idea of being a department head, just before passing along thier current assignment he had given a small speech, nothing elaborate just a few words. He had commented on his predecessors work, how he wished to maintain the current level of readiness, how he couldn't replace Chance but would do his best to fill the role. He knew a few words were expected from him but he wasn't a big public speaker, though now he would have to work on that considering his new responsibilities. Sanok could be counted on for guidance of course, he knew how Chance had ran his department and what the troops expected. Over time they would be able to work out a system that worked to everyone's benefit. All he had to do now was wait for the teams to come back with what they had found and compare it to the computers records, while he waited for that he decided it was as good a time as any to sort out the security rotation so the Rose was adequately protected and offered everyone ample time for shore leave. Tapping his commbage he said, "Soma to Sanok, can you meet me in the armory?" (reply Sanok) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (SB 989 - Command Center FO Lt Krawl - Day 1 1100) The tall Andorian stood looking out the massive portal at the activity of the starbase. It helped him to do this when he was thinking about things. He shook his head - still amazed that he had been made First Officer. He arrived and expected a minor posting as befitted his rank and years of service. He, like most Andorrans, had hair that was white a pair of cranial antennae, and blue skin. He was rather tall and slim. His features were almost feminine which tended to mask a will of iron. Krawl turned to the padds laying before him and sighed. A few years ago he had dreamed of commanding a starship and cruising space. yet he he was stuck on a star base. Seems that there had been a rather rowdy party last night at the base's lounge. The owner of the lounge, a Ferengi named Braack, had filed for re-imbursement for damages done to his business. Krawl sat down and opened a channel to Braack. "Braack, this is Lt Krawl, i would like to see you in a few minutes in my office. Can you make it , say in 15 minutes?" the Andorian asked. The toothy Ferengi, who Krawl really detested smiled and replied "Of Course Lt Krawl" Krawl had never liked any Ferengi - money grubbing beings that they were. Forcing a smile he replied "Be prompt" and closed the link before the irritating being could respond. He purposely would wait till a few minutes before the time of their meeting to leave. He knew this would drive the Andorian mad but he had to taper his taunting with the possibility of loss of reimbursement. Teams were sent to the various weapon lockers to take inventory and to check for anything that wasn't functioning properly. Sanok was leading several of the sections, until Ben called him back to the armory. "All teams are progressing as scheduled," said Sanok. "The inventory process should be completed soon." (reply Soma, any) (posted by Bob) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Armory, CTAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, 1104) The doors to the armory opened and Sanok enteredand walked over to where Ben was standing at one of the consoles. "All teams are progressing as scheduled," said Sanok. "The inventory process should be completed soon." "As soon as they are through we'll compare the counts to the computer records to ensure all equipment is accounted for." Ben said in response. A moment of silence passed between them before Ben spoke again. "I need to arrange a schedule that leaves the Rosenante covered while we're docked. There will be a continuous security presence aboard which has to offer as much leave time as possible to all members. I could use your help in preparing the schedule, you know the personnel better then I do. I would appreciate your input on the matter." (reply Sanok) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (SB 989 - Command Center CO Captain Joseph Taylor- Day 1- 1130) Joseph stalked into the command center with a sense of feverish purpose. In his left hand he carried a PADD and in his right he carried a duffle bag that seemed to be filled almost to bursting. The crew in the command center for the most part didn't seem to notice him at first, since there were three traffic controllers on duty routing incoming traffic while another three vectored outbound traffic. It was the deck engineer that spotted him. "Captain on the deck!" came the call and everyone turned to eyeball Joseph. He quickly waved his hand in a dismissive gesture, "go back to work." he stated. He mounted the steps to his office which was positioned above and behind the main operations floor. Without slowing he took them three at a time, in three massive half leaps until he reached the upper landing. A quick glance across the floor told him the Krawl was in his office dealing with one of the Ferengi on the station. It was likely some complaint about some transport regulation or some tax or some such that made Joe happy that Krawl was able to handle that and keep the slimy little buggers away from him. He quickly tapped in the code to his office door. It popped open with a hiss as the air pressure inside equalized with that outside the office. He shuttled through, dropping his duffle on the floor near his desk as he pushed the heavy door closed behind him. As soon as it sealed, he rounded the large glass and steel desk and dropped into his chair. ~Safe.~ he thought and let out a gust of air from his lungs that sent the leaves of his ambrosia flower shimmering into a cascade of color flashes that was designed to frighten off would be predators. Soon he wouldn't have to worry about anything. He'd be able to sit back, drink his drinks on Risa and enjoy an early retirement. He'd given twenty six years to Starfleet, the last fifteen of them here at Starbase-989. He deserved a break from the tension and stress that running a Starbase bordering on the Romulan Star Empire could cause. A nervous smile crossed his lips, when he thought about all the incompetent idiots that surrounded him and how he was going to show them a thing or two soon enough. They thought to deny him a starship command and stick him out on the fringe of federation space, well they had a surprise or two coming to them. He'd show them all exactly how to make Lemonade from lemons. Taylor laughed nervously for a moment, reached out and tapped the small latinum teardrop kinetic paperweight on his desk with one finger. He watched for a few moments absently as the tear drop spun, maintaining an erratic momentum around a central bar that wobbled in response as a counterweight to the motion. It would stay moving for hours, teardrop spinning around the bar, each dancing around the other, until eventually entropy caught up to the duo and the whole system broke down. Ironically it was the same sort of thing that was happening here. With a huff, Joseph turned and lifted the monitor on his desktop and quickly keyed in a series of commands and passwords to allow him access to the most sensitive parts of the station's systems. A moment later he was looking at the image of an airlock, behind which was a Romulan merchant ship carrying rare Dynochysthaline Crystals. Soon that ship would play a vital role in his own plans, but for now, he just felt comforted in knowing that it was still standing by. "Hello Captain." A voice suddenly sounded in the room with him, and Joseph's head snapped up so hard and fast that his vision swam for a moment. "You. How did you..?" He swallowed hard, "I thought I'd locked the door." "You did." "Then how..?" Joe began but stopped when his visitor raised his hand in a gesture designed to silence even the most stalwart of personalities. His black gloves seemed to shine as the light reflected from the rare leather oils that preserved them. "That's not important." The visitor replied, "You know what I've come for. Where is it?" "It's ...." Joseph swallowed hard. His throat was beginning to go dry with the anxiety. "...not here. I don't have it with me." The visitor stepped around the edge of the desk and looked down at the duffel bag. He tapped it with the toe of his patent leather boots. "Going somewhere?" he asked. There was a hint of curiosity in his voice. "No." Joseph replied perhaps a but too quickly. "I'm just moving some stuff to my quarters." The visitor gave him a hard look and then smiled. Joseph wasn't sure what was more frightening, the look or the smile that followed it. Suddenly there was a chime at the door and the visitor turned to look at it. "expecting someone?" he asked. "Staff meeting." Joseph lied, "I'm running a bit late." The visitor narrowed his eyes and then turned and stalked to the door. Joseph looked down at his desk for a moment at the door opened and when he looked up the visitor was gone, the person in the door was replaced by the Deck Engineer. Joseph tried to look past the man for a moment, but he couldn't spot the man that had been in his office a moment before. "Sir, I have those reports that you asked for." The engineer stated, "You said you wanted to see them as soon as they were finished." "Yes..." Joe replied, nodding furiously as he spoke, "Yes I did. Leave them on the desk there." he instructed, gesturing with his right hand, "I'll look at them in a bit. That will be all Nick." Nick nodded, dropped the pair of PADDs on the desktop and turned to leave the office. Once he was gone, Joe turned fumbled open his desk drawer and fished out a pair of muscle relaxants and a half empty bottle of Maker's mark. He quickly popped the pills and washed it down with a deep draw directly from the bottle. ~It's going to be one hell of a day.~ he mused. It was that irritating Ferengi Braack. "Gods I wish he'd drop dead~ the Andorian thought as he said "Enter". The smaller man entered and took a seat in front the desk. Feeling absolutely no warmth, Krawl cut right to the chase. "O.K. Braack what now?" he asked with irrigational oozing out.Braaclk's toothy smiled disappeared. "As you wish Lieutenant" the replied with distaste clearly evident from him as well. "As you may know there was a brawl between several starfleet personnel in my establishment. Starfleet wrecked my bar" Braack added. "Please explain to me how you came to this dubious conclusion. I know they were SF but my information indicates you were selling some illicit liquors - care to respond?" Krawl's smile was one of pure delight - seeing the little grub eating beast squirm was worth it. The little bug eater began to get the distinct feeling Krawl had rigged this to make Braack sweat. "This is a lie - I demand to the the Base Commander now!" he shouted. Lt Krawl lost any vestiges of politeness - "Get your slimy bug eating carcass out of here now! he said as he rose and pointed to the door. Braack knew this particular Andorian well enough to leave. Nick commented to Harvey, who was currently manning the deck engineers station. Harvey glanced up at the other man and co-worker for a brief moment before asking, "What was odd?" "The captain. He seems to be getting more and more well, erratic as of late." Nick replied. Harvey snorted. "Yeah well dating two women at the same time while trying to keep it a secret from them both is enough to wear any man out." Nick frowned. "Yeah I suppose so, but I don't think it has anything to go do with the captain's romantic life. I mean maybe it does, but just now, he looked as if he'd seen a ghost. He was sweating and although his voice was even, he seemed to be frightened of something." "Yeah frightened of getting caught by Ardaa." I'd venture. Nick shrugged. "Maybe." There was a few moments of silence before Nick picked the conversation back up again. "So have you heard about Mister Navis?" Harvey shook his head. "No do tell." "Well word on the station is that the captain has failed to have his business license revoked for selling unlicensed Tgarta plants. Navis says he had the licenses when he bought them, but that their gone now. He claims the CO is hustling him for money." Nick explained. Harvey raised an eyebrow. "Come on. Who's going to believe the captain is trying to hustle an ex-con for money? Does Narvis actually think anyone's going to believe that bunk?" Nick frowned. "I don't know. There have been rumors going around...." Harvey shook his head. "Listen there are always rumors going around. there's always someone claiming that COs are skimming off the top or abusing their authority. It's the way things are. The rumors have always been there and they'll be there long after we're gone." "The Captain may be a hard ass, but he gets the job done and as far as I'm concerned that's good enough for me. Personally I could care less if he's skimming." Nick gave Harvey another frown. "But if he is, shouldn't we do something about it?" he asked. "The captain's money issues aren't important enough to me to ruin my career, thank you very much. I mean if you make allegations and they're not true... what then?" Harvey replied. "Yeah, I see your point." "Heed my advise on this one Nick, just keep your head down, do your job and let the Captain worry about his own ass, eh?" Harvey stressed. "Yeah I guess you're right." Nick responded and then went back to work. (reply none) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Docking Ring 16- Ship's Master- T'Sek- Day 1- 1200) T'Sek didn't like being forced to play the sorts of games that he was being forced to play. Already his ship the Harveq had been delayed long enough to start worrying him about his ability to get his Droveli to the markets on Velas XIX before they spoiled. Had he only known that the Captain of the starbase was going to hold him until his cargo could be thoroughly inspected, he would have tried to bypass the station in the first place. of course that was likely to get him in trouble with any Federation starships that just happened to be patrolling this sector. The Romulan Ship's master sighed, a long abnormally impatient sigh that most people would have thought more human than Romulan. He had been told that there would be a meeting at the docking ring entrance to the station and that he should not be late. T'Sek wasn't late, but the representative from the Federation station certainly was. "I told you so." Nargo, his cargo master said in a barely controlled snarl. "It's a shake down. they're holding you here and delaying you until you become desperate enough to make a deal. Then they'll demand some latinum to 'expedite' the paperwork or some such nonsense." T'Sek turned and looked over at the large Orion male. The man was probably right, after all, it wasn't a secret among the merchants that plied this route that there would be periodic and random filing fees assessed from time to time. However, after all the times that he's been through here, he had never had a problem. So until now, he'd always just considered it a rumor rather than a fact. "I wonder if they know that my grandfather is a Romulan Senator?" T'Sek asked aloud, not quite phrasing the question as a question but more of a veiled warning. Nargo shrugged. "We know." a new voice replied and T'Sek turned to regard the shadowy figure as he came down the docking port. He was obviously male, large framed and stocky. "Well then you know we don't like to be kept waiting and we aren't going to be paying anything to continue on our way. I won't stand by and allow a corrupt Federation official to steal from me." The man stopped in the shadows, a small circlet of light illuminated enough of his uniform to show he was Starfleet, but not enough to give much more detail than that. "How much is your shipment worth to you, Romulan?" the man asked. There was a hint of a threat in his voice. "How much is your life worth?" T'Sek threw back. "You have about another sixteen hours before you have to leave and get your sensitive shipment to market. if you don't make it you'll lose everything. Isn't it worthwhile for you to at least listen to my request?" T'Sek took a step forward, clenching his hands into fists. Nargo stopped him with a hand on his shoulder. The big Orion shook his head. "Your friend is smarter than you are. You should listen to him." The Federation officer stated. "Fine. what is it you want?" T'Sek asked. "There is a problematic individual on the station. I will have that person report to you tomorrow morning. I want you to take them to Velas XIX and leave him there." "Isn't that kidnapping?" The Romulan asked. "Not if they are willing to go." The man responded. "And is he?" The Romulan asked. The man in the shadows cocked his head slightly to one side. "He'll tell you he is. So don't worry about it. Besides your grandfather is a Romulan Senator. Regardless of the circumstances the Federation won't prosecute anything anyway, and if he becomes a problem for you..." The man shrugged. "I'm not a murderer or a kidnapper." T'Sek added. "No of course you aren't. But you are interested in your family's name aren't you?" The individual replied. The man dug around in a pocket for a moment and T'Sek was worried that he might pull a phaser. Instead he provided a Romulan data chip. "On this chip is a taste of the information that we have at our disposal. If we feed this or the rest of what we have to the Tal'Shiar, Your beloved grandfather will become a pariah and the status of your house will collapse. You'll go out of business and your wife and children will become outcasts. you should take a look at it and see for yourself." The chip flew through the air towards T'Sek, but it was Nargo that caught it. The Orion handed it to his Romulan compatriot. "I know you'll do the right thing. The individual will be here tomorrow morning. Have a berth ready for him." T'Sek sneered at the man, who in response turned and left the corridor. Once they were alone. "If he were Romulan I'd have killed him for that." He said. "Yes." The big Orion replied, " but it doesn't matter to me if he's Romulan. I owe your grandfather my life." "Not yet Nargo, let's see what's on the chip first, then we'll decide." Nargo nodded and then the two headed back to the Harveq. Ardaa bit off through grit teeth. "Who the hell does he think he is, cheating on me? And with that tart from Medical no less?" She rose from her seated position and slammed her fists on the table top, hard enough to cause the personal items on her desk to jump in response to the sudden impact. "Sorry. But I thought you'd want to know. I mean, If it was me..." The man standing across from her was a thin wiry wisp of a man, a result of his birth and upbringing on the light gravity world of Gayla III. His black short hair framed his long almond-shaped face and drew your eyes towards his slightly Asian heritage. "You're damned right I wanted to know. I swear, I'm going to kill the bastard!" Ardaa hissed again. "Computer!" she barked, "Where is captain Taylor?" [Captain Taylor is on the command deck], the computer replied, as if oblivious to the rage and anger that Ardaa was feeling at that particular moment. The security chief rose to her feet, planting her palms on the desktop to grant herself additional, although unnecessary leverage. "Ardaa, wait." Kieto said, holding one hand in front of him in gesture. "You need to calm down first. If you storm in there on the bridge in this state, he'll skin you alive. Not to mention the gossip." Ardaa gazed at the man in front of her, her blue eyes searching his. There was no malice or ulterior motives emanating from the man standing in front of her. If anything he had always been a good friend and a respected colleague. She huffed, turned her back to look out of the large observation window and crossed her arms in defiance. Three steps brought her close enough to the transparent aluminum barrier that her breath fogged it slightly. "you're right, of course." she finally conceded. "But I... just don't know what else to do. I loved that sonuva..." "I know." Kieto said and then stepped behind her and wrapped one arm around her shoulder. Giving her comfort for a moment. "But he obviously had other intentions. It is a terrible shame that someone would treat another as he has treated you. The Buddha says that we must be forgiving and do only good to each other, because what we do in life follows us in the next." "Buddha never had to deal with Taylor." Ardaa replied acerbically, or maybe he would have said something like an eye for an eye." Kieto winced, sighed and then replied, "Of course you don't mean that. Even Taylor can not escape the price of his Karma." Ardaa chuckled then as the image of Buddha standing at a toll booth looking to collect taxes on bad Karma filled her mind. The thought was irreverent, but at least it made her feel better. "What's so funny about that?" Kieto asked her. Ardaa shook her head as the anger burned itself away through nervous laughter, "It's nothing. I just wonder what kind of price Buddha's going to require? I mean I'm thinking of the old 'pound of flesh' adage." Kieto frowned then. "You are sometimes very barbaric Ardaa." he stated evenly, without condemnation or mockery. It was simply a point of fact. "Yeah I know. It makes me great at my job." She replied, still staring out the portal at all the merchant ships maintaining their positions within easy distance of the station. "Promise me you won't see the Captain until you're off shift about this?" He asked her. "I can't make that promise." she replied. "Then at least promise me you'll try to be civil. If you approach this the wrong way..." Kieto began. "I know." Ardaa replied, "I'll find myself stuck on some rusting station somewhere so far from home that it will be impossible to see Sol. I got it." Kieto nodded. "Yes, the man is most assuredly vindictive." There was a moment or two where neither of the officers felt it necessary to comment further on that fact. "I must get back to Operations." He finally said. "Yeah. I have work to do as well. Have a drink with me after shift?" "Of course, as long as you don't try to make me drink alcohol." He replied. "I can't promise that." She responded with a smile. "I'm on the rebound now. It would make it so much easier to take advantage of you if you were drunk." Kieto raised an eyebrow, shook his head and said, "I'll see you at Polaris after shift. I'll at least make certain you get home safely." "Such a gentleman." Ardaa said sarcastically, still not looking at him. "It is my fate I suppose." Kieto replied and then silently he turned and left her office. Only the sound of the doors betrayed his departure. "I'll kill him." Ardaa muttered to herself. (replied none) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base 989 - Docking Ring - Ferengi Entrepreneur - Quol Nor - 1532) Quol stood at the end of the docking pylon assigned to the new Federation ship arrival. He usually dealt with those docking at the station who weren't Federation. They were easier customers to please and they tended to go for his more expensive services. He always took an opportunity to deal with the Federation. Yeah they were a bunch of goody-goods. Usually it took a little convincing and sweet talking to convince them to use some of his more expensive services, but the check always cleared. It was quite a surprise two days ago when the Station Commander called him up into his office, to make a deal. He wanted some dirt on the Romulan Captain that had docked. Easy enough, but not cheap. He payed though, all of it, cold hard latinum. Quol didn't think he had the lobes to be that gutsy, taking on a Romulan, especially one as well connected as T'Sek. The first Starfleet member that Quol had seen from the Rosenante was walking down the corridor. He carried himself well, from his rank he was a senior enlisted man, so he had a little spending money. Quol smiled a broad crooked little smile. His suit was made of some of the finest materials latinum could buy, imported from dozens of different worlds. He stood tall and proud, and spoke to the enlisted man as soon as he approached with in polite conversation range. This Ferengi was no barker. "Chief Petty Officer, I am Quol Nor, a sort of Unofficial Station Ambassador, let me be the first to welcome you to Star Base Nine-Eighty-Nine." ~Rule 239 - Never be afraid to mislabel a product.~ "Thank you." he said simply but kept walking, obviously not impressed. "You must be fatigued from your important galactic travels, " the Ferengi said hamming it up and laying it on thick, "and I have just the thing for you. A relaxing stay at Risa! Fun, sun and women." he said excitedly. "I've already been to Risa." he said, but now he stopped. ~You got your foot in the door. Keep pushing.~ "Not like this my human friend." he said and brought his finger up for emphasis. "What happened when you went? You saw the sights, you ate the food, did you get the girl?" "Um. No." he said. "How would you like to see Risa, in all it's splendor and beauty, but all the women want you? Live the Star Fleet dream like Captain Kirk? Meet rare exotic races and bring them to your bed?" he continued. "My holosuites' optical and tactile resolution rivals that of any Star Fleet holodeck." "I don't have to sleep with all of them, but it would be nice to get a lady's attention for once." the petty officer admitted. "Good, I'm glad to hear a reasonable Star Fleet man. I don't charge by the hour or day, I charge in time blocks. An hour and a half is the same as five minutes. Next block starts at 91 minutes and ends at 3 hours. Rates go up from there. The longer time you reserve the better rates you get." he explained. "The program keeps track and automatically charges what you've used. Just press your thumb here and we are in business." he said and offered his PADD with a touch screen and rectangular orange box in the middle. The Petty Officer thought and smiled then nodded and pressed his thumb to the screen. "Press hard, so it gets a good read." he instructed as he escorted the man to his holosuites. As the pair walked Quol swung the PADD around to the opposite side of the fleet man and pressed a button on the side with his thumb a small beep that only his sensitive Ferengi ears could pick up let him know he was successful. Soon they were at his holosuites. "Go ahead Chief. Take Suite number four." he said indicating one in the middle. Once the doors closed Quol grinned evilly. Not discouraged, though, he headed out to find the Ferengi man, Quol Nor, that he was instructed to see in order to book some holosuite time. He had dealt with the Ferengi only twice before, and neither experience had been very pleasant. Eian had no interest in money but was an excellent strategist and once he acclimated himself to the Ferengi facial expressions and body language, he was able to detect a fib pretty quickly. The second time he had done business with a Ferengi, the salesman, frustrated that Eian had seen past his ploy and embarrassed that the cadet had done it in front of thirty other people, had called Eian a 'female-sized compulsively honest telepath in disguise'. He had meant it to be an insult. Eian was confident he'd be able to see past whatever ploy Quol Nor had in store for him to take his credits, and he looked at this upcoming interaction as a challenge to his profiling skills. ~Can I go three for three?~ he thought. ~I just hope there's enough holosuite time left here on the station.~ He had asked the station computer where Quol Nor was and he headed directly to that area. He spotted the Ferengi almost immediately. "Mr. Quol Nor?" He asked, getting the Ferengi's attention. "I'm told you're in charge of the holosuites." (reply Quol Nor) "No, thank you," Eian said right away. He kept his eyes on Quol's face and hands, making sure to pick up everything he could. Matrix sat up pouring in sweat in his own bed, gasping in exhaustion and dreadful fear of what had happened. He touched the light switch within reach and noticed his hand trembling. His whole body was shaking. A few moments passed as Matrix gathered his thoughts and realized it was a dream. A bad dream, but one the CEO often relives. The fear of a catastrophic mistake or miscalculation. "Damn it..." said Matrix out loud. [Please rephrase the request] replied the computer. Matrix paused briefly, "Not again...this damn dream again." [Please rephrase the request] replied the computer. "Computer disregard." replied Matrix. (Reply none) (Posted by Steve) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Deck 8, Observation Lounge - CEO Lieutenant Steven Matrix, Day 1, 2353) Matrix sat at a corner table, alone with a half empty cup of Kona coffee. This third cup in less than a half an hour. He could not sleep after that nightmare, it was little use staying in his quarters pretending to rest. Before him were seventeen PADDs all with various notes, reports, scan results, schematics and design specs of the USS Rosenante and her systems. Four PADDs were crimson in color and were designated "critical systems" and were always kept up to date. In fact there were no less than ten sets of these references PADDs in key locations around the ship. Matrix had seen to this little detail while aboard the Paladin and aboard the Geneva. Readily available PADDs with vital information about key systems had saved time and might save lives some day. After reviewing the status of repairs he concentrated on his staffing challenges. The repairs weren't going to task his crews too much, but additional work always seemed to surface anytime a starship was docked at a star base. Matrix now had command of engineering and a greater responsibility to the ship and to his crew. Being docked at a star base presented an additional challenge as it provided an opportune moment to complete repairs, refits and cleaning that couldn't be accomplished during a mission. It also presented a staffing challenge as short leave was foremost on many crew members agendas. Still he could tap the additional personnel resources the base provided. Matrix had awarded shore leave in a round robin fashion which left a core compliment of personnel available for anything that was needed and the entire staff could be recalled within hours if necessary. Most of the crew were now on shore leave. Many who remained onboard chose to do so, critical repairs would not start for nearly 24 hours. Matrix tapped his PADD and issued the repairs and personnel schedule for their time at the base. Crews would be alerted to the staffing changes within minutes. ~Tomorrow is going to be a busy day~ thought Matrix. He brought his empty cup to his lips, then back to the table again and frowned. It was time to get busy on his new assignment. Matrix looked at his PADD and at the bottom it read "Don't try to be a great man, just be a man and let history make its own judgements." A comment from Zefram Cochrane made in 2073 that reminded him to just do his job to the best of his abilities. Matrix smiled. "Will you be entering the martial arts tournament on the station?" Ben considered the question, he'd been debating it since he heard there was a tournament on the station. "I haven't decided yet." Ben answered. "Part of me wants to and part of me doesn't. Ben also looked forward to the challenge of testing his skills against other martial arts enthusiasts, he enjoyed practicing his martial arts and found it relaxing most of the time. The last tournament he had entered was anything but relaxing. "I understand your reluctance," said Sanok. "There were some unpleasant aspects to our leave on Axtis. However, you are a talented martial artist, and you enjoy it very much. I feel you would regret not participating." Ben smiled at his friends remark. "Sanok," Ben began, "normally I'd agree with you. But this time I don't believe I do." Ben thought back to his experiences over the past few months, the fighting he witnessed and the injuries that resulted. He felt more like booking a holosuite and just relaxing in an ancient Japanese temple and just meditate for the duration of his leave, he felt conflicted and wanted more then anything to resolve it. "I don't feel like fighting, I need to relax. Solitude may be my best option, just get away from everything for a short time." "I see," said Sanok. He paused before continuing. "I guess that means Ensign O'Neill will go unchallenged as champion of the Rosenante." "For now his reputation may go unchallenged." Ben replied and added, "The deadline isn't until 2100, there is still time to think about it." ~That didn't work,~ thought Sanok. ~I will need to think of something else.~ Turning back to the reason he had called Sanok back Ben said, "Back to the scheduling. Those who were involved with the events on Irlix should be given the first chance for leave, yourself included." Ben stated hoping to cut off any objections to the contrary." We can rearrange the current team assignments if there is any conflict." "I understand your desire for me to go to the station for leave time, but it is unnecessary," said Sanok. "To rest and relax, some meditation time in my quarters, and some quiet, light duty, while most of the crew are away, is all I require. There is nothing I would care to do on the station anyway, unless there was something specific that I would need to see, like a martial arts tournament, for example...." His voice trailed off. Ben considered it for a moment before saying, "You're going to take advantage of the leave on the station." Ben stated and then added half jokingly. "I'll pull rank if I have to." Sanok raised an eyebrow, but did not say anything. Ben knew he wouldn't hear the end of it, just like the last time he tried to argue his way out of participating in a tournament. "I will reconsider entering the tournament, it will be good exercise if nothing else. Ensign O'Neill is the Rosenante's champion is he?" "To my knowledge, the Rosenante does not have a martial arts champion," said Sanok. "By stating that, I meant that he would represent the ship as our champion, without competing against you for that title. It was a psychological ploy to change your mind." Sanok looked at Ben, an innocent expression on his face. Ben smiled and simply shook his head a little, the debate had seemed so familiar. "You knew I'd enter the tournament, the psychological push wasn't required." Ben said. "Will you be placing any bets this time?" During his last tournament Sanok had placed a bet on him and had won, though Ben didn't know it until after they had left Axtis and he tried to convince Ben to leave Starfleet and spend the rest of his life with Marah. There were times he wished he'd taken that advice, recent events had caused him to consider it again. Sanok tilted his head. "You mean I wasted a perfectly good psychological ploy?" The innocent look reappeared. "Before I choose to put any currency at stake, I would first need to see the list of other contestants. I would not want to lose my hard-earned credits." This time Ben did laugh, he'd missed these moments with his friend. "The last time you placed a bet it was without knowing who the contestants were, or at least that's how I remember it. You placed you wager on faith in my abilities, quite illogical I'd say." Ben said. "Considering this tournament is being held on a Federation Starbase betting may be frowned upon." "Pfft!" said Sanok, imitating a Human expression he'd often heard. "You have worked in security long enough to know there is always illicit gambling on any Starfleet vessel or facility. Besides, on Axtis, the odds were 15:1 that you would be knocked out in your first match. Placing money on you was a sure bet, and thus completely logical." Sanok enjoyed the debates and the chiding with Ben, though now that Ben was a department head and higher-ranking officer, Sanok would need to make sure such times were done only in private or when off duty. He could not do this in front of the crew, and especially the Sec/Tac department. "If you enter the tournament, I will be there to watch your back." Ben chuckled again. "I didn't say there wouldn't be gambling, I simply said it would be frowned upon." Ben said. "Besides I'm almost sure I remember seeing a Ferengi ship on the scans, their presence and the tournament is no coincidence I'm sure." After a moment of silence Ben added. "It settled then, I'm entering the tournament and you're taking leave." "A fair trade off," said Sanok. He was pleased with himself. Ben enjoyed tournaments, and all Sanok would need to do was make a few token appearances on the station to satisfy Ben. His plan worked to perfection! "Let's get back to the schedule." Ben said smiling. "I'd like to get it to the Captain with the inventory." Ben knew Sanok would only take advantage of a portion of the leave time he had, he could argue that the Vulcan needed more but it was pretty much useless unless he made it an order which he didn't want to do. It was up to Sanok how he used his free time, Ben would use what time he had outside of the tournament meditating and trying to find out what he could about Marah.
