Compile #9 Mission: The Third Law Day: 8 Stardate: 2414.03.22 ========================= (USS Rosenante - Cmdr Josh Caskie - CMO's Office - Main Sickbay - Day 8 - 1144) (USS Rosenante - Captains Ready Room - ATAC/SC Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos - Day 8 - 1151) (USS Rosenante - Ready Room -CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid - Day 8 - 1152) (USS Rosenante - Personal Quarters - ATAC/SC Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos - Day 8 - 1750) (USS Rosenante - Personal Quarters - ACEO Lt Eian O'Neill - Day 8 - 1753) ========================= (USS Rosenante - Cmdr Josh Caskie - CMO's Office - Main Sickbay - Day 8 - 1144) Josh was in her office when the Captain called her. =/\= Salid to Caskie and Frasier =/\= Tapping a button on her desk Josh replied. "Caskie here. What can I do for you Captain?" "Doctors, I need you to make any preliminary preparations that you can in anticipation of performing cosmetic alteration surgery to all the members of the away team. Currently there are nine members of the away team, including myself. I would like for you to prepare for as many as 12 possible members. All are human with the exception of Doctor Frasier and Sanok." Josh nodded but grimaced at the same time. "By all means Sir but with all due respect Sickbay is going to need to know exactly who needs surgery and what they should look like. When do you think we will have this information available Sir. We can't just magic it up out of thin air. "Very well, I'll send a list down shortly. And I do understand that there will need to be adjustments made once we get closer to the planet and gather more information. Thank you Doctors, Salid out." Josh closed the button on her comm even more worried now than she had been before the briefing. (No reply needed) (Posted by Marilyn) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Captains Ready Room - ATAC/SC Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos - Day 8 - 1151) Jessica listened has the captain started the briefing and it didn't take long for the Captain to get down to the meat of the subject, and for the security aspect that meant finding out how to protect and provide security for a large away team with little weaponry and almost no fire power. I could be done but it was still no easy task. Everyone gathered on the security team knew when and how to fight. They also had the benefit of this not being the first mission that they were on so each had an ideal non the other tactical strength and weaknesses. Jessica had the added advantage of Lily, she knew that all who knew of her alter ego would rather of not known. But one can not always choose the cards they were dealt. Lily's knowledge and ability has an assassin could be of great value on this mission. She knew how to blend in and vanish in the shadows. She knew hundreds of different ways to kill and how to hide weaponry or to procure said weapons if needed. She knew how to survive behind hostile lines and the Captain knew this. Sanok and Soma both made there concerns known but it was apparent the Captain had already made up his mind and there was little that could change that. Soma glanced her way looking for support of his comments. Jessica nodded replied simply. "I didn't lose to Volus and I won't lose now. We'll keep everyone safe." Jessica knew that everyone had there reservations about the complexity of the upcoming mission. They might only have a one percent chance of accomplishing there goals. But with out confidence that one percent became zero. She hoped everyone present knew and understood that reason behind her seemingly simple response. (reply none needed.) (posted by Matthew Locke) -------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Ready Room -CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid - Day 8 - 1152) "Captain," said Sanok. "It is important for us to learn the types of weapons native to the people, and their laws, customs, and traditions regarding the carry and use of them. We may then be able to bring some sort of weaponry with us. As an example, perhaps a stun baton, disguised as a common item of the day. If they carry knives or daggers, we would need the design to make ours appear native. In short, sir, we will not be able to resolve this matter until we have more information about the people." Ahmed nodded. "You are absolutely correct Lieutenant, but our ability to gather that information at this distance and without access to long-term studies of the inhabitant's culture and legal system are going to make that information impossible until we can place a Ranger on the surface to gather some basic information. Even then, Rosenbauer's exposure to that culture should remain limited for fear of his discovery. We'll have to collect a lot of this data as we go. We simply do not have enough time to collect it before we begin our operation." "Captain if I may." Ben said. Ahmed looked at Lieutenant Soma. "Of course Lieutenant" he replied. "You're the least expendable member of the crew and we are going into the unknown here." Ben stated. "Should the unthinkable happen and we become stranded your decision to lead the mission would put Commander Sullivan in a very difficult position, she may face a court marshal for allowing you to participate. Are you certain this is the best course of action to be taking?" "I understand your concern, but I have spoken with the commander on this and we both agree that there is no danger of us being stranded here, and that with the team on the mission any chances of us violating the prime directive are statistically small. Commander sullivan has placed her reservations on the record for posterity, should the unexpected take place and thereby granting herself a high degree of amnesty. She would be on this mission herself if there weren't extenuating circumstances that prevented it. As for my participation in the away mission, I can no more ask you to volunteer to do undertake this mission than i can to deny my own participation on the same grounds." Ahmed explained. "Understood Sir." Ben replied. "I'll begin working on the problem once we finish the briefing, Lieutenant Sanok, Ensign Signos and myself will give it our complete attention for the remainder of the voyage." "If there is nothing more, then you are all dismissed." Ahmed stated. (reply none necessary) Daniel Greene -------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Personal Quarters - ATAC/SC Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos - Day 8 - 1750) Jessica smiled has Eian entered her quarters even with all that was going on around them. Eian was always able to put a smile on her face. She caught the look he was giving her, she was glad the he found how she looked appealing. It seemed with everything that had happened in her life Eian was one of the few that looked at her like a girl, and not something else. "I thought you could use some company for dinner. Do you mind? Or do you want to go out to eat?" Eian commented after he had entered and settled Murphy with a bone. The young dog growled at the defiant bone that just did not seem to want to fit in his mouth. "Of course I don't mind." Jessica spoke happily, she hated eating alone but with her life alone seemed to her lot in life. "Whatever you want in fine by me." "Well, I think I know just the thing. How does a steak with bleu cheese melted on top sound? I have the recipe in the system." Eian responded. "I would like that a great deal." She replied, letting Eian go to replicator to make the meal. Meanwhile Jessica moved to another console and pulled up some soft music to play while they eat. She kept the volume low on the song not wanting it to be distracting just enough to let the soft melody flow. Jessica waited letting the soft music fill her quarters, she always enjoyed the soft melodies of some Irish, and Celtic music before she moved to a small table and took a seat while she waited on Eian to bring the meal. It didn't take long before the two of them were seated. Jessica looked at Eian from across the table. "So, what do you wanna talk about." She asked in mocked innocence. (reply Eian) (posted by Matthew Locke) -------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Personal Quarters - ACEO Lt Eian O'Neill - Day 8 - 1753) He heard the music and smiled as he finished programming the meal. He brought her food to her at her seat at the table, and then went back for his own. "This music is what my parents used to play in our quarters all the time at dinner. It reminded them of Ireland." He had answered her question with the simple conversation he was looking for. He felt like even though they knew each other's souls, they didn't know each other's lives. He wanted, basically, to court her. To have a period of time where they could talk about themselves, their intricacies, likes and dislikes...and basically get to know each other. (reply Jessica) "To be honest," he answered, "I don't really remember it that well. I was pretty young when we left. But I remember we had a pretty big yard, and I liked to run around on it. I remember that I was an only child while we were there. Glenn wasn't born till we moved from Earth. How do you like your steak?" (reply Jessica) "You know, I can do the Irish accent pretty well," he said, and then cleared his throat as he bowed his head and said in a perfect Irish brogue, "Dear Lord, we thank ye for the food, for the drink, and for the companionship of each other, human and beast. In your Son's name we pray, Amen." He looked up. "See?" he said with a grin. (reply Jessica) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- ========================= Mission: the Third Law Day: 9 Stardate: 2414.3.23 ========================= (USS Rosenante - Parker Davis' Quarters - Lt. JG Tayla Fraiser and COUNS Parker Davis- Day 9 – 2359) ========================= (USS Rosenante - Parker Davis' Quarters - Lt. JG Tayla Fraiser and COUNS Parker Davis- Day 9 – 2359) Parker had just finished telling Tayla about his 2001 Ford Taurus, which was still in his mother's garage. The antique car was easy to learn to drive and had been his father's. His mother kept it for him so he could participate in the Woodward Avenue Detroit Dream Cruise when he happened to be on Earth at that time of the year. It was late, and he suspected they were both tired. "Would you like me to walk you back to your quarters?" he offered. She smiled, yawned and said, "Yes, that would be lovely." She held his hand as they walked out of his quarters and headed to the turbo lift. Once inside, she leant her head on his shoulders and said, "Before we say goodnight, do you have a moment? There's something I would like to show you." "Sure," he said readily, wondering what it might be. He grinned at her in anticipation as they boarded the turbolift and he ordered it toward her assigned deck. She smiled back at him and said, "Is it strange how fast this has happened? I mean, I feel like I've known you for years, rather than days." Parker nodded his agreement. "You know, there's a faith on Earth called Hinduism, I don't know if you've heard of it, but they believe in reincarnation. They believe that people are essentially spirits in a body and when your body dies, depending on how virtuous you are, your spirit travels to another body until it eventually makes it to the ultimate achievement of happiness. And if you repeat your life as a human, then it's possible that two people could know each other in the past and in their next life." He smiled. "Perhaps we knew each other centuries ago." He didn't believe this, but the thought was intriguing and he loved to think about intellectually stimulating things. Smiling widely, she replied, "I've heard of the reincarnation belief and, I suppose, it does make some sense. It certainly would explain a lot." She paused as the turbo lift halted and the doors opened. Stepping out, she continued, "I've always thought that there is some tie that pulls people together and that, when it happens, you shouldn't question it." She blushed a little and laughed. He took his his hand out of hers and wrapped his arm around her as they walked. "I actually believe the same thing. My personal religious beliefs dictate that when people are tied to each other, it's divinely inspired." They reached her quarters and entered, Parker stepping aside to allow her to enter first. "Now what is this surprise, and should I close my eyes?" She smiled and waited until he was inside and the door was closed before she said, "Take a seat, I need to get something first." She walked into her bedroom and knelt by the bed, slipping her hands underneath to reach the black leather case. Standing up, she held the case in her arms and thought to herself, ~Ok, just remember your scales and enjoy yourself.~ She leant out of the room and said, "Close your eyes." Parker obeyed, and awaited what would happen. The next thing he knew, he was listening to a beautiful tune from a flute. He grinned, and kept his eyes closed as he leaned back and took in the melody. The music started off a little wonky at first but soon the notes were flowing from her. It was as if the world of the ship had melted around her and there was just her and the flute as a whole. This was her favourite piece to play and she knew it so well, she closed her eyes and let the piece play itself. After it finished, she held the flute in one hand and looked at Parker, his eyes still closed and said, "So?" He opened his eyes, and looked at her with an expression of mixed awe and joy as he said, "My only regret is that you stopped." He grinned. "I love it! Keep going!" She smiled, sat next to him and said, "If I do that, you might never leave." ~Not that I'd mind that.~ she thought to herself. she looked at him, deep in his eyes and said, "This is something I don't share with everyone. It's a very private thing for me. It's a way for me to release my emotions and taper my Betazoid side. It helps." she turned away from him, a little embarressed by what she was saying. She'd never really told anyone this and was still unsure what it was about him that had her opening up to him. At first, she'd reasoned it down to him being an excellent counselor but now, she knew it was something more. He nodded slowly and stood, walking over to her. He drew her close to him and cradled her hand that was holding the flute. "Don't be embarrassed," he said softly. "Right now, you're the most beautiful person in the universe. And when you play, you're even more spectacular because it lets someone who isn't Betazoid hear your emotions." She felt her hand being held and the closeness of him. It put her instantly at ease and she leaned against him, taking in every sense she could. She closed her eyes a moment and said, "This is so comfortable. It feels right...." She sighed, She felt totally at ease with him and it made her wonder if this was a past love, a love that was here to stay. She turned to face him and said, "Is it me, or does this feel like something that's happened before? Like a past love that's deemed to repeat itself when the time and the people are right?" She stopped, suddenly realising what she'd said. He smiled. "No one but God knows," he said, and slipped his hands behind her back. "But it doesn't matter, because this time and these people are right." He kissed her for the second time that evening. She felt his lips on hers and put her arms around him and kissed him back. It just felt right to be here, in this moment and, for a second, time stopped. After a moment, she pulled away and rested her forehead on his and said, with a smile on her face, "You know, you'd better go or I might not let you leave." His laughter was small and muffled by the fact that his lips were still together. "Well, I'd like that..." he said, and stopped himself. It was too soon. He realized that, she realized that, and if they took it further right now, they would both question whether it was pushed by pure emotion or by a real connection. He pulled away. "Let's take some time," he said quietly. "So there's no question. And it *will* be better that way." He took her two hands in his. "Do you agree?" She smiled and said, "Definately. I want this to be right. What ever is going to happen, be it destined or what ever, is going to happen. But, I won't lie and say nothing would make me happier than to stay here, now." She kissed him gently on the cheek and said, "Now go, Parker, before I regret telling you to go. " She smiled widely. He laughed and slowly backed away, not letting go of her hands until he had to in order to keep moving. "See you tomorrow, bright and early," he said, and walked out of her quarters. Once he was in the hallway, it was as if the music had stopped and the holomovie was over. The world around him seemed real, and what happened in there seemed to be a dream. She watched him leave and sighed. This was real life and things like this didn't happen to her. She could feel her heart telling her that this was real and something to hold onto but her head was telling her to be cautious. Did he like her for her or was it simply the outside that he liked? That was something that she knew had happened before and she didn't want the same thing to happen here. She stood for a moment, staring at the door to her quarters and then packed her flute away. Looking at the black leather case, she said, to no-one in particular, "Not too shabby at all." Smiling widely, she placed the case back under her bed and stretched. Crawling into bed, she was reminded of a line from Shakespeare, "Ah to sleep, perchance to dream." she said and curled up with a smile on her face that had not been there in a very long time (reply no-one) (Posted by Jackie Smith & Morgan G) ------------------------- ========================= Mission: The Third Law Day: 10 Stardate: 2414.03.24 ========================= (USS Rosenante - Personal Quarters - ATAC/SC Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos - Day 10 - 0605) (USS Rosenante- Sickbay – Chief Field Medic – MCPO Nathan Fuller – 1312) (USS Rosenante- Sickbay – Marah Neru – 1314) (USS Rosenante- Sickbay – Chief Field Medic – MCPO Nathan Fuller – 1322) (USS Rosenante- Transporter Room 1 - CTAC Lt. sg Ben Soma - 1341) (USS Rosenante- Transporter Room 1- CEO, Lt. Two combat knives in leg sheaths, two boot knives, and two black wooden sticks. It was those sticks she hoped would protect them the best. Because at first appearance they looked like normal polished black fighting sticks of about four feet in length. They gave the team an non-lethal alternative, but if that failed she ran her figure over the three small notices in the wood that marked the handle for the hidden katana blade that rested with in its sheath giving them an deadly advantage when needed. (reply none needed) (posted by Matthew Locke) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Sickbay – Chief Field Medic – MCPO Nathan Fuller – 1312) Nate had just come back from lunch. He was getting ready to check on the joes and he saw a Bajoran woman tending to a tricorder. She was presumably finished when she looked up and asked a single question. "Is there anything else I can help with?" She asked. "If there isn't anything at the moment I'll grab a PADD and download another couple lessons from the medical database and begin studying." Nate taken aback was surprised that she talked to her and showed it briefly. He looked around to ensure it was him that she was talking to. ~You talkin’ to me? You must be ‘cause I’m the only one here.~ The old movie line popped into his head. “I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Chief Fuller. Your name miss?” Nate asked politely. (Reply Mara) “Now that we’ve been acquainted,” Nate said. “I’m unfamiliar with your qualifications. So I don’t know is there anything you can do?” (Reply Mara) “I see, and what have you done so far?” he asked. (Reply Mara) “Wow, you keep that up and you will put my techs to shame. Have you had lunch yet?” he asked. (Reply Mara) “Very well. Then tomorrow I’ve got a few recipes from my family you can try. For now, are you familiar with all the equipment in sickbay?” he asked. (Reply Mara) “That’s good for Nursing, however it would be important for you to learn some of the trauma gear that my medics carry.” He said. (Reply Mara) “This is the portable stasis stretcher. We use this to buy time for us to get the most critically wounded or dying patients back for definitive care. With me so far?” (Reply Mara) “You carry the stretcher in this configuration.” He said demonstrating. The whole thing was barely two feet long. With some visible controls on the side. The two ends were also visibly thinner then the middle. “When ready for use, this button is pressed.” He said and the whole stretcher extended to it’s full length of just over 2 meters. “To use it, you place a patient on it using standard cervical spine trauma protocols. Just like the low-tech version what used to be called a ‘long spine-board’ on Earth. Once the patient is supine and in-line, you can activate the temporal stasis unit.” (Reply Mara) “Temporal stasis, is stopping time. Well, it really doesn’t actually stop time, it slows it down considerably. One second goes by on the stretcher, once activated, time progresses at roughly one six-hundred thousandths the rate that it does normally. The temporal stasis unit can keep this up only for approximately 8 or 9 hours on a full battery charge. Like I said, it buys you time.” He explained. (Reply Mara, room for more) (Posted by Todd) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Sickbay – Marah Neru – 1314) “I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Chief Fuller. Your name miss?” Nate asked politely. Marah regarded the elder man before her, he was aging gracefully and was still handsome, he appeared to be friendly which she should have known given his choice of career. She offered him a smile before speaking. "I'm sorry." She replied. "Where are my manners. I'm Marah Neru and I have been given a shift in sickbay so I can help out." “Now that we’ve been acquainted,” Nate said. “I’m unfamiliar with your qualifications. So I don’t know is there anything you can do?” "I can set a broken bone, I can stitch a cut and reset a dislocated shoulder." Marah replied. "At present my skills are somewhat behind the times, I'm not used to all this modern equipment though I can use a dermal regenerator and an osteostimulator." She used to be quite proud of her skill set, but now she could see how others would think of them as archaic or maybe even barbaric. “I see, and what have you done so far?” he asked. "I haven't actually treated anyone yet, but I can operate the tricorder." She answered. "I can access the data base for case files relating to various diseases, illnesses and their treatments. I can calibrate the bio beds as well as the various scanners and most of the diagnostic tools. I've become pretty good at using the sterilization equipment as well. I can use the nerostimulator and the portable scanning devices used in cases where continuous monitoring of a patient is required outside of sickbay." “Wow, you keep that up and you will put my techs to shame. Have you had lunch yet?” he asked. Marah nodded. "I had lunch before I can on." She said. “Very well. Then tomorrow I’ve got a few recipes from my family you can try. For now, are you familiar with all the equipment in sickbay?” he asked. Marah thought about what recipes he was referring to, in her experience long standing family recipes were always the best. "That sounds great." She replied. "I'm not familiar with all the equipment yet, mostly just the basics like the tricorder, the biobeds and diagnostic imager. I'm sure it'll be a while before I can use the more sophisticated equipment." Marah knew everything took time to learn and she was happy that she had learned what she had in the relatively short period she had spent in sickbay. She was confident that in time she would learn how to use everything here and really be able to help. “That’s good for Nursing, however it would be important for you to learn some of the trauma gear that my medics carry.” He said. Marah was glad that Chief Fuller was going to show her a few things, everyone here seemed to be eager to give her pointers and help her through her studies. I'm her limited experience that was a rare quality, especially where she came from. "If it's important to learn I'm all ears." She said with a smile. “This is the portable stasis stretcher. We use this to buy time for us to get the most critically wounded or dying patients back for definitive care. With me so far?” Marah looked at the device Fuller was pointing out, it didn't look as if it was all that important but she wasn't familiar with it's operation yet. "So far so good." Marah responded as she moved to take a closer look. “You carry the stretcher in this configuration.” He said demonstrating. Once the patient is supine and in-line, you can activate the temporal stasis unit.” Marah watched as Fuller demonstrated how to carry it and then how to activate it, she was surprised when it stretched out to it's full length. She knew about spine boards, there were a couple in the clinic on Axtis but she hadn't used them but did see it in use. "Temporal stasis?" She inquired. “Temporal stasis, is stopping time. "Time to get someone back to the ship so they can receive proper treatment." She said. "So if someone was injured really badly in some kind of accident, say they were almost crushed, the medics would place that person on this stretcher so they wouldn't die in the time it would take to get them back to the ship." (reply Fuller) "So that patient would then be placed on one of the surgical biobeds where their bodys functions can be controlled artificially such as respiration and circulation." Marah continued. "Forgive me, but a lot of this seems like magic compared to what I'm used to." (reply Fuller) (posted by Milo Young) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Sickbay – Chief Field Medic – MCPO Nathan Fuller – 1322) "Time to get someone back to the ship so they can receive proper treatment." Mara said. "So if someone was injured really badly in some kind of accident, say they were almost crushed, the medics would place that person on this stretcher so they wouldn't die in the time it would take to get them back to the ship." “In that particular case you would have to pull the person out of the threat first, but yes. Any other multi-system trauma would be an appropriate time to use it.” He said. "So that patient would then be placed on one of the surgical biobeds where their body’s functions can be controlled artificially such as respiration and circulation." Marah continued. "Forgive me, but a lot of this seems like magic compared to what I'm used to." “Yes, that would be the third echelon of care, and it’s OK just the knowledge that you have would seem like divine powers to a lot of the less developed cultures that there are in the galaxy.” Nate said. (Reply Mara) “Sorry, Star Fleet recognizes 4 echelons or stages of medical care. One through four. The first is called point of wounding. A lot of this usually is accomplished by well meaning lay persons and even the individual themselves, in an attempt to save lives. It can be as complex as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, or as simple as pulling the casualty out of harm’s way.” Chief Fuller explained. (Reply Mara) “That’s right, the higher the number the more definitive the medical care. That is part of the job that some of our more experienced medics help accomplish, the categorizing or triage of patients to decide where they need to go based on their injuries.” Nate replied. (Reply Mara) “I thought you would know about that. Triage is pretty old stuff. The second echelon is accomplished at triage stations that are placed in key areas of the ship. They act as casualty collection points where people can bring the injured and dying. Usually a senior medic, nurse and a physician’s assistant are stationed at each one able to affect minor surgical intervention before sending them higher if need be. Also, once the critical patients are seen to, less urgent patients can be seen with out bogging down the sick bay with the walking wounded.” He said. (Reply Mara) “That’s right, the third is sick bay. Most patients can stop and be treated at this stage and not have to go higher. Starfleet ensures that our sick bays are fairly state of the art at the time of launching. Though many years exploring space and with the leaps and bounds medical science can advance in Starfleet, we don’t always have the very state of the art.” He answered. (Reply Mara) “Starbase is the fourth, that is right. They usually have the very pinacle of available Starfleet medicine. Though rarely is it even used, at least by starships, because every hang nail or sniffle we can’t go running back to Starbase to get patched up. Occationally we do go back because a medical problem might be to overwhelming or too exotic to be treated on a starship. They have all the space they need, and on a starship you learn to make do with what you got.” (Reply Mara) “That’s probably enough for now. We were just about to do some tricorder training if you want to join us.” He offered. (Reply Mara) “Well everyone pairs up, and practice scanning each other with tricorders, scanning bio-signs and recording them in the patient’s chart.” Nate explained. (Reply Mara) “I’m sure they’ll treat you well. I’ll be over here if you need me.” (Reply Mara) (Posted by Todd) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Transporter Room 1 - CTAC Lt. sg Ben Soma - 1341) While Commander Caskie was giving Tayla an ear full Ben thought back to seeing himself for the first time in sickbay, he didn't know the individual staring back at him from the mirror. He had pasty white skin and long blond hair, he considered himself to have a fair complexion before but after seeing the alien looking back from the mirror he amended that consideration. The lines also added a very distinct look as did his now blue eyes, thankfully there was no reason to alter the rest of his physic so he remained well toned and in peak form. Looking around the transporter room he found it was still difficult to tell exactly who was whom, he went on posture and voice mostly. He turned to regard his friend who remained almost the same as he had before the alteration, Sanok didn't appear to have as much trouble adjusting as the others. Ben assumed it was all that Vulcan training his friend had undergone but he knew on the inside Sanok was as puzzled as he was. Mike gave them a run down on what to expect when they hit planet side, the idea of living high in the mountains didn't really appeal to him but at least it wold be warmer then the rogue. The gear had been distributed amongst the team and everyone was busy sorting through everything, Ben had most of his placed in a sort of duffel bag with a strap that he could sling over his shoulder. Other then that he had a double edged knife hidden in his right boot and a short sword on his hip, he would have preferred a katana but he went with something more generic. When Rosenbauer had finished he opened the floor to questions, Caskie was the first to speak up. "Would we get away with posing as a family group of traders? An extended family, possibly with bodyguards?" A group of traders would be a good cover and if they were relatively successful bodyguards wouldn't be out of the question. Ben turned to Sanok and Jessica. "Looks like we'll be playing bodyguards, that way it won't look too suspicious if we scout a little ahead of the others." He said. Ben could pull of playing a bodyguard, he wasn't overly sure about playing a merchant. Even though he had grown up on a freighter he had been to young at the time to really understand what was going on, his parents handled the business aspects and he simply had fun running around and making a general nuisance of himself. He waited to see what the answer would be and what the others had to say. (reply Sanok, Signos, any) (posted by Milo Young) -------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Teleporter Room 1 - ATAC/SC Ensign (sg) Jessica Signos - Day 10 - 1342) Jessica had marveled at how she know looked. She long black hair was now sliver pulled back and in a pony tail and wrapped with in a gold wiring. The hair that escaped the ornament cascaded down her back. Her dress was a dark crimson, and more of a kimono style of wrap with a wide piece of silver cloth that matched her hair wrapped around her midsection with large bow tired at the small of her back. Her foot ware small and easily sipped into comfortable but not enough to conceal her boot knifes. Her skin was a smooth ash white, the color of new fallen snow. Jessica's eyes glowed violet, has she scanned the group, discerning who was who. Her form made her look more like a child than any kind of security officer, maybe an young entertainer. She listened has Rosenbauer briefed everyone that was present. She listened has Josh spoke up about a possible cover story. During which Jessica found Eian and handed him her extra boot knifes. "If you need them. They just wont work in this, but if you can use them." she smiled, and vanished back to ware the rest of her equipment was located. Jessica was strapping on the last of her leg knifes when Soma spoke up. "Looks like we'll be playing bodyguards, that way it won't look too suspicious if we scout a little ahead of the others." He said. "That may be," Jessica spoke, "But do I look like I would pass for a bodyguard." She continued lightheartedly and smiled. Soma and Sanok had seen Jessica in action and knew full and well her abilities but then again Jessica just may of had a point. How many people even with in there respective race looked the age Jessica did and had her skill set. It just didn't make sense and could cause more questions than answers, and more questions was the one thing they did not need. Jessica grabbed her two black sticks and waited to for the Captain to say a few words. Caskie did bring up a valid point what was their cover story. The Captain had to have some kind of notion of how they would progress after being beamed down to the surface. So Jessica listened to find out what kind of role she was gonna be casted with. Ahmed replied. (Reply Salid) (Posted by Steve) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Transporter Room 1- CEO Lt Commander, Steven Matrix, Day 10 - 1347) Matrix noted the Lieutenant as she was very enthuiastic about the mission and seemed very energetic. "If I may, Is there anything that you noticed that, well, Sanok and I should be aware of? Are these people aware of the existance of telepaths and empaths?" asked Fraiser. "Not that I've been able to ascertain. Lieutenant Rosenbauer pretty much summed it up. While I'm not a culturial anthopologist we appear to be dealing with a people that are simply living from day to day, unaware of anything or anyone beyond their own civilization. What I mean by that is outsiders, not to mention cultures able to travel light years. I doubt that they have the congnitive reasoning beyond basic instincts." replied Matrix (Reply Fraiser) "I suspect you'll have a much easier time figuring them out then they you or our away team." said Matrix. (Reply Fraiser - IYW) (Posted by Steve) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Transporter Room 1- CO- Capt. Ahmed Ibn Salid & YEO, Lt Mike Rosenbauer- Day 10- 1400) "If I may, Is there anything that you noticed that, well, Sanok and I should be aware of? Are these people aware of the existance of telepaths and empaths?" Mike considered the question for a moment before answering. "To be honest Lieutenant, I was unable to determine that information during the short time on the surface. I sent the medical scans to Medical, so unless there is some indication in the scans of telepathic or empathic ability, my best guess would be a 'no' based on the relative infrequency of those particular abilities. The odds are greater against it being the case than it is for the existence of these abilities. But you should be wary nonetheless." "Well, thank you. That helps." she replied, but Mike was a little less sure of the helpfulness of his reply then she seemed to be. After listening to Mike's report Josh posed a question. "Would we get away with posing as a family group of traders? An extended family, possibly with bodyguards?" "That seems like it would work." he replied as he nodded, "It appears that such an arrangement wouldn't be uncommon. In fact I observed a small caravan that seemed to be doing just that. It seemed likely that the group was an extended family, since it included a woman and a pair of young children. As for the bodyguards, it was possible that they were relatives, but that is merely supposition on my part. Those that seemed to be body guards weren't carrying any significant military weaponry. I spotted a small short sword and a couple of knives. The most prevalent weapons seemed to be fighting sticks and staves." "Thank you lieutenant." Ahmed stated. The now cosmetically altered Ranger took a step back to relinquish the floor to the Captain. "Okay," Salid stated. "We've got a bit of work ahead of us. Our job is to determine if there is sufficient evidence to indicate that the species either possesses advanced technology, or if they have already had contact with a species that has. Those are the only two ways that we will be able to put aside the constraints of the Prime Directive and help these people." "It is generally believed that a capital, especially a planetary capital will be the most likely site to incorporate the latest technological advances. So that's where we will be going. We will beam directly into the Capital city, and from there we will attempt to locate a place where we can establish a base of operations. From there, we will collect data. Look for signs of advanced technology or signs of alien contact." "I don't expect that it will be an easy task, and I suspect that it will take a while to ferret out any technology considering the long-range scans, assuming that it even exists. We need something solid, and irrefutable. We may even plan an excursion to the capital building, to see if we can locate any information in public records." "Without much knowledge of the local economy and trading routes, we're going to have to try to avoid being too specific. If you are asked what we sell, I think it best that we remain vague. Let's say fine bolts of cloth, pottery and glassware. I also think it is a good idea to tell persistent people that we have arrived ahead of our trade goods so that we could survey the local markets, and to make arrangements for needed storage of our items. The caravan is several days away, delayed by a broken axle on a cart, should suffice." "As for Roles within our group." Ahmed continued, "Soma, O'Neill, Matrix, Tamblyn, Rosenbauer, and Sanok will be personal body guards. Caskie will be my wife, Frasier our daughter in-law and Davis my eldest son. Signos will be our daughter. Sanok, you will be in charge of the security team while we are on the surface. Davis will be the second in command, and Caskie will the away team's second officer." "I believe that sums things up as much as it can considering our shortfall of information. Are there any more questions?" Seeing none, Ahmed nodded, "Alright then everyone assemble for transport to the surface. It was at that time that Commander Sullivan entered the compartment. "We're about to undertake our mission Commander, You have the ship." Ahmed stated. Sullivan gestured him aside, "You didn’t think I hadn’t noticed your name on the away mission list did you sir? she inquired. "I suspect you did Commander. You can not blame me for desiring to do the right thing by these people. If there's any way we can help them short of breaking the Prime Directive, I have to try." He explained. “I don’t actually blame you. At least millions of lives, perhaps billions lay on this one decision that you are responsible for. I would want the evidence first hand as well. I just had to come to send you off in person.” She responded. "Thank you commander. Do what you can and see if you can find any evidence that this rogue planet of ours is an unnatural event. Or if there is any indication that it was purposely placed upon that path by a technologically advanced species. If you find such proof, return to Asrai Prime and advise us immediately. Otherwise do everything you can to find something that we can use to save these people if it exists. Remember your protocols. If you are unfamiliar review them. I don't want to contaminate this culture if it can be avoided." “I’ve got it.” She said. "I know you do, commander. This will work out for the best, I've faith it will. He turned back to his team to see them on the transporter platform. He joined them and took a deep breath. "20 days commander, see you no later than then; sooner if you find something." By way of answer, T'Larah relieved Dawson at the transporter controls. "Energize when ready commander. Someplace free of prying eyes but within the confines of the city." he ordered. “Good luck and Godspeed.” She said. "Live long and prosper T'Larah." Ahmed replied as she activated the transporter and the world began to dissolve around him. (reply all away team members) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Transporter Pad 1 - COUNS Parker Davis - Day 10 - 1401) It was so strange to look so different. He had never looked anyway other than the way he was born: dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes. This was the exact opposite, in every way. He had never had long hair, but since that was the style for men his age on this planet, his straight, blonde/white hair was tied back in a short ponytail. He couldn't bear to have it in his face, having never had long hair before in his life. It was certainly an interesting experience. When the Captain had finished speaking and they were about to energize, Parker quickly told them, almost by way of a pep talk, "When you get down to the surface, you may find yourselves wanting to explain your presence right away, or you may find yourselves responding to looks with words. Remember that this society has a complex structure of body language cues and that verbal responses may be considered unwarranted for the situation. It's natural for us to want to speak. But this should force everyone to listen first." He nodded to the Captain that he was done, and it was then that Tayla took her spot next to him. “It seems the fates have put us together again.” Parker smirked. "I'm glad I'm not the only one who blushed a little when the Captain announced our cover," he said in a low tone. He hoped no one in front of him heard him. She smiled and replied, “This time, I get to take your hand and not hide about it.” She winked and took hold of his hand. As soon as she did, he felt that familiar feeling that one did right after one lost one's balance, but before one had really begun to fall. And the transporter enveloped them in blue sparkles, dissolving them and streaming their particles to another world for twenty days. (Asrai Prime- Celdebrai City - Alleyway - COUNS Parker Davis - Day 10 - 1407) After beaming down, the first thing Parker noticed was the scent. There seemed to be a lot of...fresh air...in this pre-industrial city. He thought about his holodeck journeys to places on Earth in the distant past, and how bad some of them smelled. One got used to it after a while, but he was glad he wouldn't have to. He found that he was automatically assigned to one team, and was going to stay with Tayla. He glanced at her with a tiny smile, barely detectable unless one was looking. He wanted to tell her that she was still beautiful, even surgically altered. But now was obviously not the time or the place. They had thirteen hours to find shelter, and hopefully food and water for the night. He shuffled his way over to the Captain, Tayla close behind him because they had been holding hands only moments before. "Sir, I recommend we try to find a local source of news," Parker said. "Most of the people are illiterate here so cultural patterns would dictate that the best source for news would probably be the local religious institution. Seminaries have always held higher literacy rates. If we can send even a few people, separated from the group, then we'd at leas have some idea of what's been going on lately." Soon her world was covered in a brilliant white has the familiar surroundings of the Rosenante were replaced with that of the alien world. Jessica had to suppress the urge to go for her weapons has the light faded from the group. She had a role to play now it was time for her to play the part. She would stay close to Salid and Josh her parents an internal security operative that could be kept close at hand and not appear offensive, for those times when a large number of guards would be stationed outside an area rather than with in. Jessica smiled in theory the away team's set up would allow them to cover most situations and adapt easily to anything they would be unprepared for. (Reply Davis, any) (Posted by Jackie Smith) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Transporter Room 1, Lieutenant sg Sanok, Day 10, 1406) Sanok remained silent while listening to all the briefings, comments, questions, and answers about the away mission to the Asrai. The mission was filled with many variables and unknowns, which was to be expected in something as unusual as this mission was, but there were a number of things that were weighing on his mind. Being in the mountains, they would be enduring temperatures on the cold side. It wouldn't be as bad as it was on the rogue planet, but it would not be a walk in the sun for Sanok. Still, with the clothing he had with him, he would be able to handle it. What concerned him more, was the altitude, which meant much lower oxygen levels. He was accustomed to that, as Vulcan had a thinner atmosphere, but the rest of the team would have difficulties. Their bodies would be getting less oxygen, so they were going to be having problems, especially with their endurance. This was going to give them a disadvantage against the Asrai, who were accustomed to it. He hoped it would not lead to a member of the team being injured, or worse. The cover story they would be using bothered Sanok. A delayed caravan could satisfy the immediate needs, but since they were going to be with the Asrai for possibly twenty days, the caravan not arriving in town might lead to suspicions and accusations. Others traveling into town not seeing a caravan on its way to the city, could also lead to problems. Sanok would need to be vigilant at all times. The last thing that concerned him, was Ensign Signos. He didn't know her background story, but there was something about her that just didn't feel right. Normally, the word, feel, wouldn't be part of a Vulcan, but since he had once lived with his emotions, it was part of him now. He had read her file, at least the file his clearance could access, so he knew she had skills. However, those skills were far beyond what she should be able to have based on her size and stature. She also carried an arsenal with her on any away mission he had been on with her. It was as though she was intentionally looking to go on a mass fighting rampage whenever she could. Though he had worked with her in the past, there was a part of him that did not trust her, and in unknown situations like the current mission, that could be dangerous. Once Captain Salid gave the order to transport to the planet, the team members began to file onto the pad. Waiting to be one of the last, Sanok moved to Ben and whispered to him so the others could not hear. (reply any, iyw) (posted by Bob B.) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime- Celdebrai City- Alleyway- CO- Capt. Ahmed Ibn Salid - Day 10- 1420) The first thing that Ahmed noticed as he rematerialized in the alleyway of the city was the unusually clean smell of the air. Even for a urban center the smell was clean and fresh and smelled more of flowers, herbs and incense than it did of waste. A slight tinge of woodsmoke mixed with the sweet smells creating the almost hypnotic mental image of a mountain hideaway. The rest of his team were with him, of course, despite the relative narrowness of the alleyway. It was little more than wide enough to be touched with outstretched arms on either side. The material was a masonry work, something quarried that held a light grey and brown streaked appearance. It was midday here, and through the gap between either side of the alley, skywards, the Captain could see the both the twin stars bright in the midday sun. The science department had warned that there was 26 hours of light followed by only 6 hours of darkness, due to the positions of the binary stars in the sky. The rough positions meant that they had approximately 13 hours to locate a suitable place to establish camp. The sounds of the street could only be heard dimly around the slow curved corner of the alleyway. The buildings to either side had no windows and despite the apparent closeness of the buildings, there wasn't any significant refuse to be found. He was satisfied that they'd not been seen nor heard and as such, were, for the moment safe. "Sanok, have your team divide into two parties. They will be moving through the city in order to find us a place suitable for establishing a base of operations. Anyone you choose to assign to act as our bodyguard is fine. I leave that at your discretion. All teams are to meet at the large fountain in the city center in no more than two hours. Myself, Caskie, Frasier, Davis and Signos and anyone you assign will take a stroll and see what we can find concerning the general layout of the city and try to identify likely places to search. If needed, use the money that was replicated, or the loose gemstones, but do so sparingly. We're going to be here for 20 days and we have no idea what the local economy is like." (reply all) Daniel Greene -------------------------- (Asrai Prime- Celdebrai City- Alleyway- CEO Lt Commander Steven Matrix Day 10- 1422) Matrix rematerialized slightly after the rest of the away team. His view cleared up as his and the away teams electrons realigned...a sensation that he hadn't gotten use to. As his senses regained their full potential Matrix looked around and noted the environment. It was sunny and rather warm. Matrix noted the alleyway and the building structures. It reminded him of the ancient Pueblo indian ruins on Earth, although more sophisticated and modernized in comparison. Captain Salid had assigned Sanok command of the away team so he awaited his orders while Sanok worked out the logistical assignments among the team. As he eagerly awaited his task, Matrix noted the binary stars high in the sky. An interesting phenomenon on any planet and quite beautiful to behold. Matrix swung his pack around and took out a tricorder and ensured that its audio feedback was muted then began to take some readings of the immediate area. (Reply any, none) (Posted by Steve) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime, Celdebrai City, Alleyway, Lieutenant sg Sanok, Day 10, 1423) After Captain Salid's order to assemble the personnel into security teams, Sanok began thinking about what the best combinations would be. Since they were portraying a family unit with guards, Sanok had to insure that he kept that portrayal intact. Therefore, it was logical to assign them two guards. Though Signos was capable of protecting the group, since she was playing the part of the young daughter, to avoid exposing them as outsiders, it was vital that she fight only as a last resort. He also felt two-man scout teams would fit in better with the environment. Sanok and Ben would be on the scout teams. Since Rosenbauer had Ranger training, and because he was already somewhat familiar with things on Asrai, he would also be on a scout team. Sanok needed to decide who the fourth would be. Sanok initially thought about assigning O'Neill to guard the family. However, he and Signos had feelings for one another. Though neither would do anything to expose their cover, there were certain to be stolen glances or quick smiles. It was Human nature. Body language was also an important part of the Asrai language, so it was entirely possible they could unknowingly do some sort of movement that would arouse suspicion about their relationship, especially since Signos was portraying an adolescent girl. O'Neill also had security training. Since Matrix and Tamblyn were not Sec/Tac officers, it was logical that they should be part of the larger group and portray guards for the family. Based on all the factors, it was best that O'Neill be on one of the scout teams. Sanok thought about partnering with Ben. They had served together for years, been through much together, and worked extremely well as a team. However, it was important for both of them to learn to work just as well with others. Sanok drew close to the others and spoke in a hushed tone. "I will lead one of the scout teams with O'Neill. Soma will lead the other and take Rosenbauer with him. Matrix and Tamblyn will guard the rest of you." That was that. Soon, the three groups would be mingling with the Asrai. Hopefully, this would be the first step to saving an entire civilization. (reply any) (posted by Bob B.) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Alleyway - ACEO Lt Eian O'Neill - Day 10 - 1426) It felt different to be altered in the way he was, but not different enough to make him think too long about it. Sure, his hair was longer and a few shades lighter, going from red to light blonde, but his skin was only missing the pink tinge it usually had and was otherwise the same color. He actually looked about the same shade he had for weeks after his assimilation. His eyes were already blue. He was young enough not to have too many creases added to his skin. The one thing that was strange to him was his body shape. His entire body needed to look like it had gained a few pounds in order to cover up the multiple implants that were visible on the surface of his skin. For the ones that protruded the most, false scars were layered over them. The end result was that he looked about five years older, slightly heavier, and as though he had been through one hell of an experience to accumulate the number of scars that littered the surface of his skin. In some ways, he felt this altered body reflected his disposition even more than his natural one did. The implants were no longer visible, but he hadn't lost the mark of what he had gone through. Upon beaming down to the city, he checked the knives in his boots that Jessica had given him and nodded to her. She looked so much like a young girl that Eian felt his attraction for her wane slightly. It felt wrong to think of her that way. Soon they were split into teams, and Sanok and Eian were paired together. He was eager to get started and learn about this civilization...this was the epitome of exploration and he wished he could spend more than twenty days on this planet. He walked over to his partner and said excitedly, "Let's go exploring, Sir." (reply Sanok) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City, Alleyway - ACSO Lt. jg Viskhard - Day 10,1427) Visk scratched at the side of his neck, the craggy skin bothering him, but also his normal nervous puffing had been quelled by an ingestable neuro-blocker that tasted awful and was contained in a small ornate flask at his hip. The blocker quelled his cheeks and also held his eyes firmly in a pale violet. It felt strange to the normally changeable featured Denobulan, to be so, so. ~Static.~ Visk tried a frown, feeling very self-conscious knowing his mouth was also restricted. Along with the flask, Viskhard carried a single ornate dagger opposite the flask, at least it looked like a dagger. Hidden within the encrusted casing and hilt was actually a tricorder assembly Visk had modified - he had enough skill with the electronics to warrant himself a small collection of parts back on the ship. He fingered the hilt and tapped the stunning tourmaline stone he'd placed there from his own private collection. It was one of his favourites and had been a gift from his second-father when he'd completed his first set of studies on geology. The bright green stone was similar to emerald, but not as deep a tone and it was about one inch a side, cut in a trilliant shape. The stone was a perfect size and shape to top a decorative weapon such as this and covered the activation mechanism for the assembly. Visk felt the momentary vibration that signalled the now running tricorder. Just by mute observation of the team and by the brief report he'd read about the culture, Visk's face was pretty much the oldest, so it made a natural position for him as a senior member of the family - but being the uncle of his own Captain was not is his idea of easy to play. So he decided to try a different tack. "Captain, As your uncle I would have been a trader before you. I propose to supervise our young couple in the market - on the premise of teaching them the trader's best secrets and being a," here, Visk coughed slightly, "chaperone for them." (reply Salid, any, room for more) Visk stooped a little and slung his hand behind his back, doing his best to look stately as befitted a well to do merchant. He cratched his neck again before running his hand down the padded vest to his hip flask. Grimacing his swigged. "I don't know why the healers make me take this stuff," He spoke loudly enough for his words to carry to the street, "And I don't know why you haven't taught your son the most important parts of our work." He strode over to Sanok - at least he thought it was Sanok - and grumbled at him, "Well, where is the Market. I want to see our competition." She had found it to be true on every away team she had participated in that you could tell how well a city was managed by how it smelled. If it smelled clean and fresh then it was usually managed well, if however, it stank, then there was usually something seriously wrong somewhere and Josh the doctor, wasn't about to suggest that the party stay anywhere that smelled bad enough to be a health hazard. She would rather sleep out in the open thank you very much, than anywhere that was likely to cause a problem given how long they would be here without recourse to the Rose. Thankfully this place smelled clean and Josh listened as the Captain began issuing orders. She was glad when Sanok assigned both Rosenbauer and O'Neill to the scout teams since any mis-slip between either of the two couples could compromise their cover badly. Turning to the Captain she caught his eye and began speaking. "Since we are supposed to be merchants I would suggest the best place to start would be the local market. Not only will it establish our cover but it is also the best place to observe the local population without having to interact too much with them at first. Also local markets are usually the best place to pick up a great deal of local gossip and information about the way things are run, the best places to stay, and basically all the stuff we are going to need to know to pass as natives here." (Reply anyone) Once the Captain had decided what they would do Josh walked over to him and with a broad grin linked her arm into his. "Well, husband mine. I'm not sure that Ahmed is a suitable name for you on this planet and I'm fairly certain that Captain certainly won't do." Tipping her head to the side Josh regarded him. "Any thoughts on that subject.... darling?" (Reply Salid, anyone) (Posted by Marilyn) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime- Celdebrai City - Alleyway - aCMO Lieutenant (jg) Tayla Fraiser- Day 10 - 1431) It was the air that first caught her attention. It was fresh with a light smell of flowers coming from somewhere nearby. She drew a deep breath and took in as much as she could. This place was such a delight to her that she wanted to take it all in. She glanced at Parker and caught his smile and returned it in kind. She had to admit that she was over the moon when Salid had placed them together as Husband and Wife but it had made her think if he realised that something was going on between them. They hadn't been seen by anyone, as far as she knew, but she also realised that she didn't care. She felt Parker move towards the captain and followed suit, their hands still intertwined. She listened as he spoke, "Sir, I recommend we try to find a local source of news. Most of the people are illiterate here so cultural patterns would dictate that the best source for news would probably be the local religious institution. Seminaries have always held higher literacy rates. If we can send even a few people, separated from the group, then we'd at least have some idea of what's been going on lately." “Sir, perhaps Mr Davis and myself should go. After all, it would make sense for, within the backstory you've explained, for Doctor Caskie and yourself to source the rooms for us to stay in in your role as parents. What would be more natural? Ahmed Ibn Salid - Day 10- 1435) "Sanok, have your team divide into two parties. We're going to be here for 20 days and we have no idea what the local economy is like." Ahmed ordered. The Vulcan chief of security wasted no time following his orders. "I will lead one of the scout teams with O'Neill. Soma will lead the other and take Rosenbauer with him. Matrix and Tamblyn will guard the rest of you." Sanok replied, giving his orders to the group of security personnel. As they were preparing to undertake their mission, Davis stepped forward and spoke to the Captain softly. "Sir, I recommend we try to find a local source of news," Parker said. "Most of the people are illiterate here so cultural patterns would dictate that the best source for news would probably be the local religious institution. Seminaries have always held higher literacy rates. If we can send even a few people, separated from the group, then we'd at leas have some idea of what's been going on lately." That and If we can find a source of news, my heritage may become useful to ascertain peoples reactions to what we hear.” Tayla added. Before the captain could reply, Viskhard added an interesting twist to the idea. "Captain, As your uncle I would have been a trader before you. I propose to supervise our young couple in the market - on the premise of teaching them the trader's best secrets and being a," here, Visk coughed slightly, "chaperone for them." Ahmed smiled at the fact that the Denobulan, was getting so into character. It was an interesting thing to have such a diverse crew, each with different methods of going about the mission. In this case, Viskhard was really acting it up, going so far as to make an exclamation about medications and the like, which seemed authentic enough fool most people. "Okay, then Davis, Fraiser, Matrix and Viskhard, go scout the seminaries and the market as needed, but be cautious, most species with religion tend to be very critical of missteps where their spiritual beliefs are concerned." (Reply Fraiser, Matrix, Davis, Viskhard) With that Viskhard strode off to consult Sanok as the others of that party prepared to set off on their own little excursions. "Since we are supposed to be merchants I would suggest the best place to start would be the local market. Not only will it establish our cover but it is also the best place to observe the local population without having to interact too much with them at first. Also local markets are usually the best place to pick up a great deal of local gossip and information about the way things are run, the best places to stay, and basically all the stuff we are going to need to know to pass as natives here." Jennifer added. "Agreed." Ahmed replied. "Then Myself, Caskie, Tamblyn and Signos will proceed to the market place. Remember the rendezvous point and time." He gave those officers traveling with him a nod and they started to move towards the marketplace, or at least towards the financial district of the city. They hadn't gone far when Jennifer walked up and threaded her arm through his elbow. She was grinning from ear-to-ear. "Well, husband mine. I'm not sure that Ahmed is a suitable name for you on this planet and I'm fairly certain that Captain certainly won't do." Tipping her head to the side Josh regarded him. "Any thoughts on that subject.... darling?" He hadn't really given much thought to names, and to be fair it was an honest oversight that could be disastrous. He frowned, "No not really, to be honest. Let's try to overhear a couple of names at the market and use one of those... darling." (reply All) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (Asrai Prime, Celdebrai City, Alleyway - ACSO Lt. jg Viskhard - Day 10, 1436) The Captain's face as he spoke was lit with a smile, and even though he was practically unrecognizable under the Asrai features, Visk would remember that expression and look for it again on the serious fellow. "Okay, then Davis, Fraiser, Matrix and Viskhard, go scout the seminaries and the market as needed, but be cautious, most species with religion tend to be very critical of missteps where their spiritual beliefs are concerned." Visk simply nodded before heading over to Sanok and getting practically dressed down by the overly literal man. Visk made his show as other bits of information were passed around as they all prepared to head in their respective directions. Doctor Frasier wrapped her arm around Mr. Parker's waist, a gesture that made Visk shiver inside - he wasn't much for touching, no Denobulan was, but he supposed he could get used to the idea with his mate, if he ever found one. "Lead on, husband" floated back to him, and the scientist smiled slightly - hoping he was portraying a doting, if a bit gruff great-uncle. Thankfully, there was no shortage of family for him to pull ideas from, he didn't really have to go past his third-father to get most of the mannerisms. Visk watched the young 'couple' ahead of him while checking out as much as he could, which wasn't much in comparison to what was there. He was particularly interested in the stonework around them. He made a show of wandering over to the retaining wall at the side of the street - ostensibly to see the masonry - and admired the stone, wondering what procedures had been used to quarry it. ~Similar to earth marble, remarkable and very pleasing.~ Outwardly he grunted and muttered something incomplete about knowing better artisans elsewhere, but inside, Visk was a very happy camper. To study a group like this so intimately for this period - he might have enough information at the end for a paper or two. ~Perhaps I should study some anthropology.~ As they walked he noted the rest of the team, the guards doing their part and Dr. Frasier and Mr. Parker leaning in to each other. Tayla smiled and, gently squeezed his hip, saying, "Husband, perhaps we should ask someone the route to the Market. After all, Uncle seems eager to assess the potential for trade?" Visk put on a show of grumbling to himself about getting to the market. As Parker went to a nearby couple and got directions Tayla walked towards Viskhard and said, quietly, "I hope that this is okay? I mean, this seems like a male orientated society and, his role would dictate that the husband would do the scouting etc." Scratching his neck, it would take him a while to get used to the tingle just under his 'skin', Visk nodded, returning in kind the soft voice, "Yes, there is a distinct deference - however, I also have noted consultation between couples, so you are 'playing' your role well." Visk smiled at the word 'playing', after all a small ship was a bad place for rumours and Visk was usually hanging around the Lounge at odd hours. Tayla nodded, not letting on if she was aware of the offhand comment. She smiled warmly as Parker returned and said, "Did you learn the location, my husband?" "Yes, I did," Parker replied. "It's just down this road and to the left a little way's. Let's go." They arrived at the market and Visk gravitated towards the carved stone pieces. He looked at the vendor shrewedly, "What price?" "My smaller pieces go for three bancors, the larger ones can go for up to a kip, interested?" The vendor eyed Visk's decorative accoutrements, thinking he was sensing a customer. Visk just grunted as he waved to his three compatriots. He turned sidelong to the vendor and addressed them as third-father Eydoun used to address him, that is to say, rather ascerbically, "What do you think of the craftwork?" (reply any in party) (posted by Lori) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime- Celdebrai City- Alleyway- aCMO Lieutenant (jg) Tayla Fraiser - Day 10- 1437) Viskhard added, "Captain, As your uncle I would have been a trader before you. I propose to supervise our young couple in the market - on the premise of teaching them the trader's best secrets and being a chaperone for them." Tayla smiled a little as she knew that this would only add credence to their story but she was a little disappointed that she wouldn't get to spend any alone time with Parker. She listened as Captain Salid spoke, "Okay, then Davis, Fraiser, Matrix and Viskhard, go scout the seminaries and the market as needed, but be cautious, most species with religion tend to be very critical of missteps where their spiritual beliefs are concerned." Tayla nodded and then, slipping her arm around Parker's waist, she said, "Lead on, husband." (Reply Davis) They began to walk out of the Alley together and, for the first time, they caught sight of the people they had come to assess. There were few of them milling about and their group drew a few stares, as was expected due to the fact they were strangers but no-one approached them directly. She leant towards Parker and whispered, "Perhaps you should ask someone where the Market is. I get the feeling that this place is a more male dominated society and, well, i don't want to step on any cultural toes." (Reply Davis) Tayla smiled and, gently squeezed his hip, saying, "Husband, perhaps we should ask someone the route to the Market. After all, Uncle seems eager to assess the potential for trade?" She gave a little wink as his face dropped a moment. This was what he was here for and it would be his role to locate the possible locations. She watched as he approached a couple of the locals and began to converse with them. She walked towards Viskhard and said, quietly, "I hope that this is okay? I mean, this seems like a male orientated society and, his role would dictate that the husband would do the scouting etc." (Reply Viskhard) Tayla nodded. Then, a thought occured to her. She gazed at the conversation and opened her mind to see if they were truthful. She could sense a little distrust of this stranger but, on the whole, they were a truthful pair. She could also tell that they had no knowledge that would really be useful to them. As Parker returned, she smiled warmly and said, "Did you learn the location, my husband?" (Reply Davis, Viskhard, any) (Posted by Jackie Smith) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime, Celdebrai City, Alleyway, Lieutenant sg Sanok, Day 10, 1438) "Let's go exploring, sir," said O'Neill. Eian was eager to go, and Sanok could understand why. Exploring new and unknown cultures was part of why they were in Starfleet. It was also imperative to find something that would allow them to save the Asrai from the rogue planet. However, such exuberance could lead to carelessness, and that could lead to something tragic happening. "We will, when the captain releases us to leave," said Sanok. "I must remind you to maintain the roll you are portraying here. We must be alert and cautious." There was some discussion amongst the group, as different ideas and suggestions were offered. At one point, Viskhard approached Sanok. "Well, where is the Market? I want to see our competition." Sanok tilted his head to one side and observed the Denobulan. Viskhard wasn't part of his scout team, so Sanok was unsure why he had asked that question. "I do not know yet where the Market is," said Sanok, "but you are part of the larger family group, not this scout team." After Viskhard joined his group, and Salid had made his decisions, the groups moved out. Three weeks to find something that would save the Asrai. He smirked at first, and then realized he needed to get into character. He wondered what they would end up calling each other, and decided to wait until he had heard a few names to choose one. He glanced over at Tayla and as she had her arm around his waist, he placed his arm around her shoulders affectionately as they walked. He noticed people staring at them, no doubt wondering who they were and where they had come from. Tayla whispered to him, "Perhaps you should ask someone where the Market is. I get the feeling that this place is a more male dominated society and, well, I don't want to step on any cultural toes." He nodded and whispered back, "Ask me in character." Tayla smiled and, gently squeezed his hip, saying, "Husband, perhaps we should ask someone the route to the Market. After all, Uncle seems eager to assess the potential for trade?" He couldn't help but jump a little at the squeeze, and instantly grinned at her. "I'll ask those people over there," he said, and indicated a pair of Asrai people talking to each other by what looked to him like an apartment of some sort. He pulled away from Tayla and approached them. "Excuse me," he interrupted their conversation with an apologetic gesture. "My family and I are newcomers here. We are merchants, and would like to find the Market. Would you be so kind as to give us directions?" "You're going in the right direction," the Asrai man answered him. He then pointed in the direction they should continue to move. "At the street crossing, turn to your left and walk until you reach the red striped awning. That is the first storefront to the Market, which continues to your right." "Thank you," his gesture was grateful. "I appreciate your help." "Welcome to Celdebrai City," the woman told him, and he bowed slightly as he walked away. Tayla inquired, "Did you learn the location, my husband?" "Yes, I did," he said. "It's just down this road and to the left a little way's. Let's go," he decided as he wrapped his arm around her once again, and they walked down the road. For that moment, at least for Parker, it was just him and Tayla and he was able to completely ignore Viskard and Matrix. When they reached the market in another few moments, Parker surveyed the extensive collection of store fronts and street stands and was impressed with the sheer quantity of merchants in Celdebrai City. (reply all there) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime- Celdebrai City- Market Place- CO- Capt. Ahmed Ibn Salid - Day 10- 1445) The market place, just one of several it seemed, was a bustling hive of activity. There were a large number of vendors selling just about everything that the heart could desire. From ornamental trinkets and functional tools to exotic pets and produce. It was a loud and boisterous place, more reminiscent of his own home City of Cairo than of a mercantile gathering on some exotic world far from prying federation eyes. He was glad to learn that Jennifer's closeness was not uncommon, in fact there seemed to be a few couples, similarly engaged with each others company, arm in arm or hand-in-hand as they strolled through the marketplace looking for the best bargains. Ahmed observed a few transactions closely, discerning the different value of the few gold and silver coins that he carried in the small purse that he carried on his side. They were replicated of course, near exact copies of the few originals that Rosenbauer had procured while he had been on his scouting excursion on the surface. The fact that the Ranger had somehow managed to gain access to any of the local currency at all seemed amazing to Ahmed. From all appearances, the people here seemed to safeguard their coins carefully. That meant that they would have been safeguarded and that the Ranger would have to come exceptionally close to discovery to have acquired them. Still, Ahmed was thankful for the Ranger's foresight in this matter, and knowing that they were exceptionally well trained to infiltrate planetary populations for the purpose of gathering intelligence or disrupting enemy networks of supply, gave Ahmed some degree of strength, knowing that Rosenbauer was on the team. In their time through the market, he had noticed that most of the business seemed to be handled by the men, although on more than one occasion Ahmed had observed the husband consulting his wife. He had also made notice of the fact that contract of some sort were being drawn up and passed around to be reviewed whenever a large deal was made. This meant that at least some, if not all, of the merchant class was literate. That would give Ahmed some excuse to look at official documents, but he had little hope to comprehend them. The problem with the universal translators was that they worked with the spoken word. They didn't handle body language or the written word at all. This would of course be a bit of a problem for the away team, as they had not had sufficient time to study the slight conventions that body language played amongst the Asrai. Ahmed had picked out a name for himself during their time walking the market, Jalad, seemed a good sound name, strong, but not presumptuous. It seemed masculine and so he hoped that it would do if he were accosted. He had to admit to himself that it felt good to have Jennifer on his arm, and to be so close to her despite the circumstances. He'd always thought her attractive, but he knew that he could never pursue a relationship with anyone under his direct command. It was a recipe for disaster, that. And while he had heard stories of Commanding officers doing just that very thing, he felt it was inappropriate on so many levels, professionally, ethically and morally to take advantage of a junior officer in such a manner. Still, it was sometimes very lonely being the commanding officer of a starship. It was difficult to remain impartial to the people that you commanded. To come to think of them as friends, or occasionally to hope for more than just professional relations. But that was exactly what Ahmed Ibn Salid, the captain of the Rosenante had always done, ever since the fiasco during his work aboard the USS Nimitz. A failed relationship with a junior officer while he was the CEO there had taught him the value of not mixing personal feelings and professional requirement. It was a lesson that he remembered as he had risen through the ranks, and one that had served him well enough during his command of the Rosenante. It was a lesson that sometimes caused regret, like now, but one that he refused to break a second time. Instead he simply focused on his role as merchant and not so much upon the thought of playing husband, although he realized that he'd placed himself into this position in the first place. There was nothing to do about it now, except enjoy the company of a good friend and try to get through this mission without destroying the native culture, or breaching their own Prime Directive. Ahmed stopped and motioned for his crew to gather. Once they had he spoke. "This area is large and seems to have a great many goods for us to look upon. I think it would be best served if we were to divide into two groups and search thus then return here within the hour." He turned his attention to Signos. "My daughter, go look about the market and see what fancies your eye, take our trusted friend with you, so that you may remain safe from harm." (reply Signos, Tamblyn) "Your mother and I shall go, yonder to the cafe, and seek word of suitable lodgings for the night, we shall meet, there near that small slender column of stone near the small fountain" (reply Tamblyn, Signos) "Come wife, let us go." (reply Caskie) As they walked across the marketplace, Ahmed took a moment to savor the closeness of another human being, although cosmetically altered. He purposefully whispered something into Jennifer's ear. "Have you chosen a name yet? I've decided to use Jalad." he asked. As he pulled away from her, he allowed a smile to blossom on his face, as if he had just said something completely inappropriate to his wife. (reply Caskie, Tamblyn, Signos) Daniel Greene -------------------------- (Asrai Prime- Celdebrai City- Alleyway- CTAC Lt. sg Ben Soma- 1450) The first thing Ben noticed after beaming down was difference in temperature from the ship to the planet, it was cooler by half a dozen degrees or so. The next thing he noticed was the clean fresh air, he looked to the sky and noticed it was a clear day with sparse cloud cover with a gentle breeze blowing. It was decided that they pose as merchants and then the group was broken down into smaller parties. Sanok was in charge of security so he decided who went where. Ben was paired with Rosenbauer which was fine with him, he respected and trusted Mike. His Vulcan friend wanted to keep things as inconspicuous as possible so Eian was seperated from Jessica. Having Jessica remain with the main group and posing as Salid's and Caskie's daughter was a little troubling considering the what had happened before, but the Captain had ample help if something went wrong which he hoped would not because it would seriously undermine the mission. Everyone began to move heading into the heart of the city, the Captains group looked to be heading towards the market place. He admitted to a certain curiosity regarding the market but it wouldn't be pertinent to have everyone in the same place, more ground would be covered by splitting up. He turned to Rosenbauer. "Feel like visiting that shrine across the square?" He asked. "See how big a part religion plays these peoples lives." (reply Rosenbauer) They headed of across the square, Ben's eyes ever searching for some hidden threat. He noticed an Asrai male who appeared to be middle aged, by human standards anyway, pushing a two wheeled cart filled with what appeared to be droppings of some large herbivore. As they drew closer and the wind changed direction his suspicion was confirmed, it didn't smell very pleasant. Ben decided the man was a farmer and the manure was to be used as fertilizer. He heard laughter and turned his head to see several children rushing towards them, he stopped and allowed them to pass but one of the younger ones wasn't watching where he was going and ran into Ben's leg and fell to his behind. Ben bent down and helped the child to his feet. "Careful young one." Ben said. "The next thing you run into may not be as soft as my leg." "I'm sorry." The child responded. "It's ok." Ben said. "You better hurry to catch your friends." The child smiled. "Thank you." He said before running off after his comrades. They reached the shrines door behind another pair of Asrai, they paused at the door for a moment before entering. Ben looked to Rosenbauer and nodded that they should do the same. The door was opened and Ben followed the pair inside, they stopped by what looked to be a fountain and dipped their fingers in the water and then touched their foreheads. When they had moved away Ben stepped up to the fountain and did the same, he then turned away from the fountain to look into the shrine. It wasn't elaborately decorated, the stone walls were mostly bare but every few feet there were parchments hanging containing writing in the Asrai language, there were several windows with multicolored glass. Along the front wall, which was separated from the rest of the of the main chamber by a banister, there were several statues carved out of wood standing behind short stone pillars which held smaller carvings of what appeared to be Asrai. Ben surmised it was how the Asrai depicted the gods watching over them. The pair who entered before them turned to leave, but not before stopping in front of a light Ben hadn't noticed before It glowed a soft yellow, almost the color of the midday sun. Ben hadn't noticed any electrical lines running into the building and the rest of the shrine was lit through skylights int he vaulted ceiling, so the light was out of place. After the pair left he moved over to inspect the light, it wasn't a candle nor could he identify any filament inside the lens. "What do you make of that?" He asked Mike. Mike Rosenbauer- Day 10- 1455) Mike and Ben had been working their way through the city and into a nearby square, all the while keeping their eyes open for anything that seemed extraordinary. They stopped to pause for just a few moments, looking around them to get a good idea of the lay of the land, when Ben asked, ""Feel like visiting that shrine across the square? See how big a part religion plays these peoples lives." Mike gave him a nod and a smile, "seems as good a place as any." Ben led the way through the square, and mike allowed him to gain a little distance so that they didn't look too much like a pair of men on a singular mission. They passed a number of interesting things, including a very 'earthy' smelling manure wagon. There was only a brief moment of worry, when a small child collided with Soma, but they both lived through the encounter and without incident the pair of officers continued on to the shrine. Mike joined his shipmate at the base of the stairs, and like Ben, watched the process that a pair of pilgrims used to show their particular dedication to their religious beliefs. Mike and Ben both aped their actions, doing their best to duplicate the actions of the two pilgrims. It wasn't long before those two had shown the completeness of their devotions and had turned to leave. Once they were out of sight, Ben stepped forward, stopping near a broad beam of light. Mike now aware that there was something out of the ordinary, moved to stand near his companion. "What do you make of that?" Ben asked. Mike shrugged, "I don't know some sort of artificial light perhaps." Footsteps sounded behind them. Mike turned around to see a man wearing what could only be described as clerical vestments approaching them. He seemed young for his position, but he also seemed observant. "Company" he whispered to Ben. (reply Soma) The man stopped a few feet away and made a hand gesture. Mike simply copied it. The priest, for lack of a better word, smiled. "Welcome to the shrine of the sacred light. You have some special request?" he asked. Mike looked at Ben, to see how he wanted to play this match. There was no manure smell, except for the occasional farmer with fertilizer or pet animal relieving himself. There was no body odor smell, at least not one that was detectable by his nose. "The air here is remarkably fresh," he commented. He wondered if the Asrai didn't give off scents detectable to humans, and was curious to see what Sanok's more powerful nose detected. (reply Sanok) The buildings were tall but still built out of commonly acquired materials in the earth. It was clear their refining processes had not yet reached the point at which metal tools could be installed in an assembly line. If Eian were to compare to Earth, he would place the culture around the late 1600s and early 1700s. The architecture was showing signs of the beginnings of skyscrapers, with the inner city housing the largest and tallest buildings and the outskirts containing residences and farms. It was a common layout, and Eian could see that the next visible city, most likely several days away on foot, was laid out in much the same way. Celdebrai City was built on a hill, which was a tactical advantage for the days when castles must have been here. It allowed for an amazing view of the planet. "It looks like there were castles here at one point," he said to Sanok. "See, the walls are still in use, and recently repaired, but you can see the discoloration on the stones that mark their age." (reply Sanok) (posted by Morgan G) -------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Market Place - CMO - Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 10 - 1503) As they walked around the market Josh had activated the small storage padd that had been concealed in the jewelled pendant she wore. Whilst everyone else had discussed where they should go next she had kept it trained on the signs in the market trying to pick up some meanings for the written language since if they didn't crack that pretty soon they were going to stand out like sore thumbs. She had already figured out the numeric system which was one of the reasons she had suggested the market in the first place and she had figured out the symbols for the currency. As for the rest she had kept up a low monotone describing what she had seen as it related to the language symbols in the hope that they could work it out later. Josh brought her attention back to the Captain as he suggested everyone in the market split up and meet back at a cafe that he pointed out. "Come wife, let us go." Josh inclined her head as she had seen other women do when spoken to. "Indeed. A mug of something fortifying would be pleasant right now and the chance to rest my feet even more so." "Have you chosen a name yet? I've decided to use Jalad." he asked. As he pulled away from her, he allowed a smile to blossom on his face, as if he had just said something completely inappropriate to his wife. In return Josh allowed her wickedest smile to cross her face and leaning back in towards him whispered in his ear. "Nameeya seems to be quite popular today. Let's just hope it's not a local name." As they sauntered over to the cafe arm in arm Josh slowed her pace somewhat in the hope that someone else would sit down before they did. Thankfully she wasn't disappointed since the couple just in front of them obviously had the same idea and sat down at one of the outside tables. Josh stopped short and digging her fingers into the Captain's arm stopped him too. Gazing into the store in front of her she turned to Salid. "Jalad. Don't you think that cloth just matches my eyes perfectly? Perhaps you should consider buying it for me. The Aowa know I badly need some new clothes since most of the rest of mine are stuck days away with the wagons. How am I supposed to look like a prosperous merchant's wife with the clothes on my back and the one spare set you allowed me to carry." Lowering her voice she began speaking looking all the while as if she was having a private argument with him. "Neither you or I can read the menu or even know what to order in that cafe. The couple sitting next to us have just sat down. Let's hear what they order and see what they are served before we sit ourselves down and end up looking totally out of place." (Reply Salid) After hearing what the couple ordered and seeing that it was simply a mug of something hot, Josh nodded to the Captain and flouncing across to another table sat herself down with a frown on her face. "Fine. The least you can do is buy me a mug of Chala since my throat is parched and my feet are sore." As the servitor came out to take their order she frowned and began nagging again. "I take it we are finding somewhere suitable to stay tonight. Perhaps if you ask this young man he might be able to direct us to somewhere clean and reasonably priced or are we simply going to sleep outdoors again like beggars.?" (Reply Salid) (Posted by Marilyn) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Lieutenant sg Sanok - Day 10 - 1505) "The air here is remarkably fresh," said O'Neill. Sanok agreed. Normally, people that dwelt in cities of this level of advancement, dumped their garbage and their waste, into the streets. There was no sign of that, so the logical conclusion was there was some sort of organized waste-removal service. Sanok also wondered why there was no sign of gunpowder weapons. The Asrai were advanced enough to have steam-age technology, but they still used swords, knives, and stick weapons. The incongruity was fascinating. Sanok and Eian did more exploring, with Eian spending time studying the local architecture. "It looks like there were castles here at one point. See, the walls are still in use, and recently repaired, but you can see the discoloration on the stones that mark their age." "Indeed," said Sanok. It was interesting to be covertly studying the Asrai culture, and the surroundings were interesting, but they weren't here to enjoy the scenery. They had to find some justification to save these people from a cataclysmic ending of their civilization. "We need to find lodging for our group," said Sanok. "I suggest we make that our immediate concern. There is time for sightseeing later." Sanok heard someone giggling behind him. Turning to see who it was, he saw two young children, both boys. He eyed them curiously. "You talk funny," said one of the boys. "Are you a karul?" said the other. They both laughed. Sanok glanced at Eian. The UT wasn't translating karul, so it was time to improvise. "Why would you say that about me?" The boys looked at each other and moved their heads in an odd pattern. They both laughed again. "You're a karul! Hey, everyone. Look at the karul!" The boys were making a lot of noise about whatever a karul was, and people were beginning to look. Drawing attention to themselves was the last thing they needed. "I suggest we leave this area immediately," said Sanok. Without waiting for a response from O'Neill, he pushed his way into the crowd. (reply O'Neill) (posted by Bob B.) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Market Place - CO - Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid - Day 10 - 1506) Ahmed and Jennifer had separated from the others in the marketplace and had decided to make their way towards a cafe, that bordered the western edge of the marketplace. In their short time here already, Ahmed had figured out the names, symbols and relative values for the local money, which was a good thing, although the fact that the written language was still a mystery bothered him still. They had exchanged names as they crossed the market square to avoid any potential problems with personal greetings and exchanges. At least they had managed that much without drawing in too much suspicion. They had almost reached the small cafe, when Josh suddenly dug the ends of her fingers into the relatively soft portion of his left elbow. He immediately recognized it as a warning and turned to look at her as she began what he could only describe as excellent impromptu acting. "Jalad. Don't you think that cloth just matches my eyes perfectly?" She extolled as she gestured towards a nearby fabric merchant. As if in collusion, the merchant raised a brilliant bolt of cerulean blue cloth so that he could better see it. Ahmed barely noticed it though, as his eyes were search for some as of yet unseen danger that Caskie must have been alerted to. "Perhaps you should consider buying it for me. The Aowa know I badly need some new clothes since most of the rest of mine are stuck days away with the wagons. How am I supposed to look like a prosperous merchant's wife with the clothes on my back and the one spare set you allowed me to carry?" ~still in character for the role~ He noted, although he had still not identified the source of her concern. That state didn't last long, as she stepped close and began to speak with him more privately, explaining the need for her sudden diversion. "Neither you or I can read the menu or even know what to order in that cafe. The couple sitting next to us have just sat down. Let's hear what they order and see what they are served before we sit ourselves down and end up looking totally out of place." She explained. ~Has it been that long since I've been on a deep cover away team?~ he asked himself, knowing that the answer was obviously a resounding yes. He gave her a half-nod, before answering, "You do protest too much, I think wife. Would you have me a beggar in the streets and my fortunes lost for want of another bolt of cloth?" he asked her, just loud enough and with enough authority to cause the cloth merchant to turn away. "We do not yet know the expense of the repairs to our caravan, nor the length of time they be delayed, and so the length of time we need stay here in lodging, yet you wish to purchase cloth without a place to stow it?" He of course realized that she wasn't actually listening to him at all, as she was focused on the younger couple who had just been seated. Josh nodded to him and flouncing across to another table sat herself down with a frown on her face. "Fine. The least you can do is buy me a mug of Chala since my throat is parched and my feet are sore." As the servitor came out to take their order she frowned and began nagging again. "I take it we are finding somewhere suitable to stay tonight. Perhaps if you ask this young man he might be able to direct us to somewhere clean and reasonably priced or are we simply going to sleep outdoors again like beggars?" "Nay Nameeya, I will find us lodgings." he replied, purposely trying to take on the look of a defeated man. The servitor was still standing patiently. "We shall have 2 mugs of Chala, and something to snack on, perhaps some of those." Ahmed stated pointing to a plate of small bite-sized morsels that had just arrived at the younger couples table. "Ah," the servitor replied with a smile, "Our Habi is the best in the region, you will not be disappointed." Ahmed returned the smile, "I am certain I will not. Tell me, do you know of an establishment used by merchants that has available lodging near here? I am not from this city and this is my first visit. I seek some place... comfortable to appease my wife." The servitor gave him a queer look for a moment, but it quickly faded. "If there is no room in the merchants hall, you could seek comfortable shelter in the Traveler's Hall. They often have large enough chambers to accommodate the numbers of a caravan." "Thank you." Ahmed replied, and watched as the man gave him another strange look. "Can you direct me to the Traveler's Hall, so that I may make inquiry." The man assumed a strange pose with his hands, that Ahmed took care to denote. "Of course, opposite, this cafe, upon the left side is a roadway lined with blue tiled buildings. Follow it and at the end, it terminates in the Traveler's hall." He paused for a moment, "If you otherwise wish to visit the merchant's Hall you need only travel the road with the red tiled buildings, and at the end will be the merchant's hall." "Again I thank you." Ahmed replied as the man excused himself to fetch their food and drink. He looked over at Jennifer and spoke quietly to her. "That went well, considering. I think I missed some body cues in that conversation." He replied," At least we have a lead on some lodging and have learned something about the traveler's and merchant's caste." (reply Caskie) The servitor was back quickly, placing the two steaming mugs of Chala before each of them. He stated that he would return soon with the Habi and then made himself scarce. Ahmed took the warm mug between his hands and allowed the warmth from the cup to warm them for a moment. He glanced over at the doctor. He smiled and added quietly, "Here goes." The drink was surprisingly good. It reminded Ahmed of a combination of flavors, some citrus reminiscent of a lemon or lime, a sweetened tea and a strong pungent coffee all rolled into one. The flavors were complex and the temperature warm and inviting. In addition he could feel a slight pick-me-up reminiscent of a strong cup of Ethiopian coffee. "He cradled the cup in his hands and said, "It's good. Try it." (reply Caskie) She had just placed her cup upon the table when the servitor arrived with the Habi. The plate was very highly stacked with what appeared to be thick noodle-like pastries. It was accompanied by some sort of smaller dish that held what appeared to be a thick vegetable paste. It was apparent that the paste was for dipping the Habi. Ahmed gave Jennifer a smile, "You first, I went first last time." (reply Caskie) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - ACEO Lt Eian O'Neill - Day 10 - 1510) The situation was quickly getting out of hand. What started with a couple of youths was escalating into what could lead to a mob, and that was the last thing Eian wanted. They rounded a corner and escaped the crowd, some of whom followed them, but as they kept walking and didn't engage, the younger ones lost interest and went away. They slowed their pace. "We need to find out what the hell a 'karul' is," Eian said under his breath. (reply Sanok iyw) They had walked a few blocks, and Eian noticed that they had arrived at something called the Traveller's Hall. "These look like accommodations," he said. "What do you think?" (reply Sanok) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Market Place - ATAC/SC - Ensign(sg) Jessica Signos - Day 10 - 1515) Jessica had flowed the Captain and CMO into the market, she kept quite choosing to speak little till she learned more of the native dialect and body ques. The market was full so many wonderful and interesting things, there was a wealth of information here to explore. She kept her eyes open how who the adolescent youth interacted with other adults and there own peers. There seemed to be an abundance of peers her age in the market doing the shopping for household goods and whatever trinkets they have earned the money to buy. Then Salid turned to her. "My daughter, go look about the market and see what fancies your eye, take our trusted friend with you, so that you may remain safe from harm." "Yes father, I have already seen so many things I must inquire about." "Your mother and I shall go, yonder to the cafe, and seek word of suitable lodgings for the night, we shall meet, there near that small slender column of stone near the small fountain." "As you wish father, I have already seen to much of my parents fondness of each other and with to have no more for the time being." ONe thing about having a body stuck in one age for a extended amount of time is the Jessica never had to forget what is was to be a teenager and stuck with her parents. She turned to Tamblyn. "Come there is much of the market left to explore and I may need a strong back by the time light fades from this day Aowa willing." Jessica and Tamblyn faded into the market, It wasn't long before Jessica was lured by the exotic smells of flowers. Which in turn lead her to a flower merchant. She looked though what the small vendor offered. Taking her time to smell each of the flowers watching the other patrons out of the corner of her trained assassin eyes. But one kept her attention more than the others. "You have a well trained eye." The elderly merchant called to her. "The Lun'ette would look lovley on you it matched your eyes." "Thank you sir." Jessica responded. Has she eyed the vine of purple flowers. "I bet your eyes and the lun'ette would even share the same glow during the dark hours." "How much." Jessica asked has she tilted her head slightly. "For you one Kenal" the merchant replied. Jessica produced the coin out of a small pouch glad she had heard of it from an earlier patron, and handed it to the merchant. "Many thanks good sir." The merchant handed her the plant; it's flowers nestled in there protective cacoons till the coming of night, then spoke "It's a hearty plant that can grows quite well. but few can match its beauty." She laced the flower into her hair something that Jessica was quite skilled in as she always liked the look the fresh flowers gave her. She thanked the merchant again before turning and walking back to a waiting Tamblyn. She smiled has she came near. "Call me Lun'ette." She spoke quietly before turning "So where should we head now?"
