And I know we'll be successful, because we've faced worse things than this and always triumphed. I have complete faith that we'll do the right thing here, Prime Directive or no Prime Directive. I would simply prefer to do it without losing my career and my freedom or risking the same of those officers under my command." Josh nodded in agreement but made scoffing noises at the same time. "Well you know my feelings on the Prime Directive. How some bureaucrat sitting in a nice cosy office back at Fleet Headquarters can decide the fate of people he has never met has always been beyond me and just because a culture isn't warp capable doesn't mean they're not worth saving in my book." (reply Salid iyw) "And as for losing my career or freedom, no-one wants to but if you made a choice to save these people regardless then I rather doubt that anyone on this team would disagree with your decision. As my dad used to say, eventually you have to draw a line in the sand. Maybe that line is here." (Reply Salid) (Posted by Marilyn) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - CO - Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid - Day 10- 1712) "Well you know my feelings on the Prime Directive. How some bureaucrat sitting in a nice cozy office back at Fleet Headquarters can decide the fate of people he has never met has always been beyond me and just because a culture isn't warp capable doesn't mean they're not worth saving in my book." "Agreed," Ahmed stated with a nod. "but you've seen all the arguments about why the Prime Directive is necessary. You've seen the reports of all the Damage that people like Kirk and Archer caused with their heavy-handed diplomacy. And despite our personal agreement or disagreement with the Directive, you know as well as I do we took an oath to uphold the damned thing to the best of our abilities." "And as for losing my career or freedom, no-one wants to but if you made a choice to save these people regardless then I rather doubt that anyone on this team would disagree with your decision. As my dad used to say, eventually you have to draw a line in the sand. Maybe that line is here." He nodded again. "Maybe this is the place that the line needs to be drawn. And if it is, you know I'll be the first to draw it. If it comes down to it, I'll make the decision and I'll bear the burden. I just needed to hear the confirmation of my own moral beliefs to tell me I wasn't just playing God with these people, and that I was on the right path. Sometimes, especially times like this we need to question ourselves and determine our reasons for doing what we're doing. I'm glad I didn't sound too much like a lunatic and that you didn't look at me as if I'd grown a third eyeball." He paused for a moment. "That's all I needed to hear. Thank you." (reply Caskie iyw) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - CMO - Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 10 - 1905) After Parker agreed with her that they keep to the wider streets he pointed out a building that was still lit and suggested they head in that direction. Josh agreed and the two of them sauntered slowly towards it. They stopped to look at the statues outside various buildings in the square. One was obviously something to do with health, another with commerce or at least finance Josh thought. Parker spoke up. "One thing concerns me, though. I'm not seeing anything about justice anywhere." Josh nodded. "I agree, however we may just not recognise their symbol for justice and although the Captain and I have made some headway regarding the written language a few hours in the market is not nearly enough to get a significant sampling. It may take me a few days of roaming around to get enough information to begin to sight read things." "However one thing strikes me as interesting. Like us they use symbols as well as a written language. The use of universal symbols usually means that at one time there might have been more than one language on this planet which usually means that it did not and still perhaps may not have a unified system of government although travel between different areas was and is obviously fairly standard. I wish we had the time to check out another location to see if there are significant differences since the introduction of a unifying language is fairly significant to my mind." "What do you think?" (Reply Parker) (Posted by Marilyn) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - COUNS Parker Davis - Day 10 - 1907) As they walked, Josh answered Parker's query. I wish we had the time to check out another location to see if there are significant differences since the introduction of a unifying language is fairly significant to my mind." "What do you think?" "I definitely agree, and I think the use of sign language points to the same thing. Symbols like statues or pictures on parchment--these are all relatively universal, but coupled with sign language points to either vastly different dialects coming together, or two different species coming together to work toward one common goal. They didn't even need to unite politically. It could have been a temporary alliance that dissolved after a few generations, but the language stuck." (reply Josh, room for more) They arrived at the building, and found the statue in front to be rather nondescript. It was a simple vertical cylinder with a flat plane through it. Parker had no idea what to make of it. But across the street was another statue entirely--one unlike anything they had seen before. It was a man sprawled on the base of the statue, grasping a sharp instrument of some sort with all his might, but he was being ripped to shreds by another figure over him, who was sporting some kind of golden crown. "Now I'd *really* like to know what that means," Parker commented, pointing towards it. (reply Josh) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Lt. Sanok - Day 10 - 1910) Sanok took his position near Fraiser and Signos as they made their way through the city and to the gardens. The mission was to observe the Asrai gestures used in communication, while Fraiser used her empathic abilities to sense the emotions affiliated with those gestures. He didn't know how much of that she was doing, as it appeared to Sanok that she was distracted by something. Once inside the garden area, the two ladies sat on a bench and Sanok stood by them. He noticed it was a popular place for couples, and those couples often showed public displays of affection. He also noticed that many of them avoided passing too close to their little group. Sanok had experienced a similar thing outside the inn while he was waiting for Fraiser and Signos. Surely, it had to do with the caste system, but he was beginning to think it was also something else. The Asrai came in various shapes and sizes. Most were similar to Human norms, but Sanok had seen that there weren't many that were large. Thus far, Sanok was one of the tallest and most physically large men he had seen. Was it simply that his appearance intimidated people? Minutes passed and Sanok was beginning to notice that the gestures they had seen used, were being repeated. It was a nice place to be, he supposed, but perhaps it was time to move elsewhere. Being a servant, however, it was not his place to suggest such things to his master's daughters. Sanok heard something. No one else around him appeared to have heard it, so he stood still and waited for it to happen again. There it was. This time, it was more clear. It sounded like a woman's voice, filled with fear, calling for help. "My ladies, someone is in trouble in that direction." (reply Fraiser, Signos, any) (posted by Bob B.) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - ATAC/SC - Ensign(sg) Jessica Signos - Day 10 - 1915) Jessica and Frasier sat on the bench engaged in idle chatter while they observed the populace and the gestures they used. Being in a place were you could the same hand and arm movements over again only gave the group more time to narrow in on the meaning of those movements. Has time passed It seemed Sanok had his fill, Jessica contributed it to being a man of action. Just standing guard was not how he would of liked to past the time. Jessica understood that but she wasn't going to leave until Frasier had the chance to collect has much information has she needed to understand what was being said around them both verbally and physically. Then Sanok spoke up. "My ladies, someone is in trouble in that direction." Jessica looked in that direction and waited, then it pierced the night air the sound of someone calling for help, her voice laced with fear, the woman voice was getting louder which meant she was coming toward the gardens. Probably hoping to find safety in the large numbers of people. Jessica was on her feet in an instant, moving with the uncanny, precise grace that was perfected in her since her birth. She looked to Frasier. "Dear sister, Someone is in trouble we will go and lend aid. Your healing touch might also be needed." Jessica turned to Sanok and nodded that she would follow his lead. No matter much Jessica got the unnerving feeling that Sanok did not trust her. That there were secrets kept from him and Soma that could affect all that served on the Rosenante. But Jessica knew what would happen if he knew the truth about her. The confirmation of those secrets would ensure that Sanok would never trust her to watch his back. Jessica did not think that Sanok was the kind of person that could put that much blood behind him. However that was an issue for another time. (reply Frasier, Sanok) (posted by Matthew Locke) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Lt. Sanok - Day 10 - 1917) "My ladies, someone is in trouble in that direction," said Sanok. The three of them remained still, waiting to see if something would happen. A few moments later and the fearful shout of a woman moving towards them, pierced the air. Signos leaped off the bench, and for a moment, Sanok thought she was going to charge into whatever the trouble was. He was prepared to grab her; they had their parts to play after all, but she stayed where she was. "Dear sister," said Signos. "Someone is in trouble. We will go and lend aid. Your healing touch might also be needed." She nodded to Sanok. It was agreeable to Sanok that Signos was remaining in character. Taking the lead, he made sure both ladies stayed close. Moving quickly through the garden, they saw a woman kneeling on the ground next to an elderly man. Tears were streaming down her face and she was shaking the man, trying to get him to move. She was saying the Asrai word for grandfather. Based on what people were saying in the gathering crowd, the man had grabbed at his chest, cried out in pain, and collapsed. It was most certainly a heart attack. Sanok's first instinct was to render aid. He wasn't a doctor, but from what he could see, simple CPR might be enough to save the man. The problem was, did the Asrai have knowledge of such things? It seemed they did not. If one of them from the Rosenante helped the man, it was sure to draw so much unwanted attention to them, it would be bad for the overall mission. He wanted to help, but what if it caused so much of a stir, they would be unable to search for a reason to stop the rogue planet from destroying the Asrai world? The next thing that came to Sanok's mind, was how much would they change Asrai society by introducing an innovative medical treatment? Surely, there would be opportunists that would try to exploit their unique knowledge. As much as Sanok disliked the Prime Directive, he was forced to apply it now. Irony never ceased to amaze him. He turned to Signos and Fraiser. "There is nothing we can do here. The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few." (reply Fraiser, Signos, any) (posted by Bob B.) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Lt (JG) Tayla Fraiser - Day 10 - 1918) "My ladies, someone is in trouble in that direction," said Sanok. Tayla turned to where he was looking and heard the desperate cry of a young woman. She sighed, this was the thing that she had feared the most. Coming across someone who needed help. The Prime Directive popped into her mind as she watched. "Dear sister," said Signos. "Someone is in trouble. We will go and lend aid. Your healing touch might also be needed." Moving quickly through the garden, they saw a woman kneeling on the ground next to an elderly man. Tears were streaming down her face and she was shaking the man, trying to get him to move. Tayla watched the crowd that had gathered. It was clear to her that the elderly man had suffered some sort of heart attack. She knew what she could do to save him or at least to make him comfortable. She was ready to move forward and offer her assistance when Sanok spoke, "There is nothing we can do here. The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few." She glared at him and said, "You can't sit here and watch him die. We can help him." (Reply Sanok) A tear fell down her face as she nodded. She knew he was speaking the truth. She turned to Signos and said, "Dear Sister, i wish to retire from this place. Perhaps we could find somewhere to obtain a stiff drink to calm our nerves?" (reply Signos) Tayla sighed, and with a glance back to the crowd and the man lying on the floor, she walked out of the gardens. Maybe we can find something out about our visitor through second hand means." Josh simply nodded and left by the other door as Ahmed began to dress. Tagging Soma on her way down stairs both of the made their way down to Darsel. (No reply needed, just catching up.) (Posted by Marilyn) -------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid - Day 11 - 0816) "I have it on good advice that you're a new merchant to the city and if the whispers are true you've meet with a good deal of difficulty on the road. For that I am sorry, after all a merchant with no goods to slle is no merchant at all. Not to mention the cost of repairs and the drain on your funds to stay within the city walls while your goods are elsewhere." There was a slight pause, "Good Sir Jalad I have lived in that market since I was a mere child, there is not much that goes on there that I don't know about." Kenovan paced about the room uncomfortably, a ploy which Ahmed had hoped to be the case. Although in honesty he was uncertain if the discomfort were psychological or social. In any case it was working. Most species held similar psychologies, and when the Merchant had attempted to posture above him, Ahmed's suspicion about the placement of authority and self-confidence was confirmed, at least in the regards to the meeting with Kenovan was concerned. Perhaps the body language would have been intimidating to someone local, but to Ahmed it was a certain sign that he was getting under his visitor's skin. "I concede the fact Master Kenovan. What is it exactly that you want with me?" he asked directly. There were no hand gestures to accompany them, although Ahmed had already learned the gesture of inquiry thanks to the hard work of those assigned to the task amongst the away team. "Right that has yet to explain why I'm here but I'm getting to that." Kenovan replied, He crossed the room to look out the window before turning to Jalad once more. "Upon hearing of your tale I had to ask myself why would a merchant leave his goods, with a such a large contingent of his guards? Leaving your wares open to attack from the outcasts that haunt the roads? What did you bring that could be of such value? Then I happened upon your daughter in the market and everything came together. She's quite a sight and at the age of courtship. A courtship that would benefit the House of Rajl has well has your own. I carry my father's blessing in this matter as the master of House Rajl. It's not often I speak in these terms so listen well... name her dowry and it will be paid." "I see." Ahmed replied thoughtfully, purposely taking a moment to pause as if deliberating. Of course, there would be no deliberation. It was simply out of the question that he would betroth anyone in his away team to any of the inhabitants. It simply wasn't an option. But he had to consider the ramifications of what he was about to say, and as such be prepared for the backlash that he was certain would follow. A man like Kenovan, like every man of his sort was accustomed to getting everything that they desired. And it was unlikely that the repercussions of denying him something he desired would not bear a dire complication to the completion of their mission. "I am honored at your desire to combine houses, but I am unable to promise you my daughter. She is already betrothed and has been for some time now. The man who would be her husband is a great man, a merchant without equal. And while I can see you are a merchant worthy of respect and accustomed to many pleasures in this world, the man who would be my son-in-law is already dear to my heart and he has earned nothing but my utmost respect and admiration. I would not do well to renounce my ties, for he has long been my benefactor and my closest friend and ally for many years. I shall not and will not consider your offer for a moment and would respectfully ask your understanding in this matter." Ahmed replied. (reply Kenovan) "Do not think I am a poor or incompetent man, Kenovan. I assure you that while you may be master here, I am master of my own house and shall run it as I see fit. Your presence is no longer required here. I do not require your patronage nor am I concerned for the well-being of my caravan, as these few men you see here are by far the smaller number loyal to my unflinching service." Ahmed replied. (reply Kenovan) "As I will not reconsider my words nor break my oath to my dearest friend, I ask you to leave peaceably and under your own power, else I shall have my men throw you out into the street as if you were a beggar, and then all the city should know of your disgrace and see your weakened state, and they shall ask quietly in the darkness at what hour will come your fall. Do not test me, refrain from speaking further of this matter. Stay far from my daughter or I shall see you downcast, and your house in ruins." (reply Kenovan) Ahmed glanced at Sanok and at Mike, passing them a silent order that if Kenovan were not to leave under his own power that he should be carried out of the house and cast into the street to his shame. (reply Kenovan, Sanok) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - Kenovan Rajl - Day 11 - 0818) "I am honored at your desire to combine houses, but I am unable to promise you my daughter. I shall not and will not consider your offer for a moment and would respectfully ask your understanding in this matter." Ahmed replied. Kenovan looked over Jalad trying to concern the truth of this matter. I was true a woman of Lun'ette's quality could be already betrothed in which case. Kenovan knew he would have to take the matter up with this other merchant which would only complicate matters. Kenovan had to ask himself ~How far am I willing to take this.~ He waited to reply allowing Jalad to continue. "Do not think I am a poor or incompetent man, Kenovan. "Good Jalad if I thought you poor or incompetent I would not of taken the time to be here." Kenovan replied in equal measure not appreciating nor caring for the verbal jab that was thrown at him. "As I will not reconsider my words nor break my oath to my dearest friend, I ask you to leave peaceably and under your own power, else I shall have my men throw you out into the street as if you were a beggar, and then all the city should know of your disgrace and see your weakened state, and they shall ask quietly in the darkness at what hour will come your fall. Do not test me, refrain from speaking further of this matter. Stay far from my daughter or I shall see you downcast, and your house in ruins." It was at this moment that it took all his power to hold back the rage that was building with in him. "And you mind your words before I make you chock on them, Jalad. No house, especially one like yours with mark the fall of my house." Kenovan stepped back and away from Jalad's guards. "I will withdraw on my own accord, but don't think such an insult will go unanswered." He moved to exit the room his business here apparently done. There where few words between Kenovan and his guards has he exited the Travelers Hall. He welcomed the noise of the street. He turned to his guard. Venom and Malice in his eyes, Kenovan spoke and his guards knowing the look listened well. "Spead the word, any that so much has utters a word to Jalad and his house I will see them beg for death before I finish with them. Contact those loyal to the Rajl in the orders and get there assistance on this. All that know Jalad will pay for there transgression save Lun'ette she is not to be outcasted, nor harmed. The first of the guards dispersed to make his masters bidding so. Kenovan turned to his second, send out search parties in all direction I want to see exactly where and if this Jalad's broken caravan is. Either I will find his goods and lay claim to them or I'll expose him and his house as the meaningless outcast they should be. (reply none needed) (posted by Matthew Locke) -------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - CMO - Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 11 - 0820) Ben had followed her down the stairs and when they found Darsel immediately started berating him about their unexpected guest. Josh simply kept quiet and allowed him to finish since she wasn't sure if a female would be allowed to say what a guard would regarding the situation. "Now that we have your attention m'lady wishes to speak with you." Inclining her head gracefully Josh stepped forward and began to address Darsel. "Obviously since we find ourselves with a guest my respected husband wishes to show him all due courtesy. To that end I wish you to send a servant up with hot drinks and some food that they may both be comfortable during their negotiations. Also, since we are strangers, here I crave your indulgence and would ask if you could possibly give me some information regarding our guest so that we not offend him by our ignorance of him and his esteemed family. Taking a small pouch out of her dress she hefted it a couple of times in her hand and smiled at Darsel. Obviously we will recompense you both for your generous hospitality and your help in this delicate matter." (Reply Darsel) (Posted by Marilyn) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - Hall Warden- Darsel - Day 11- 0821) Just when Darsel thought that things couldn't get any worse, they did. He spotted the guard of the new merchant and his wife making their way down the stairs and he had a distinct feeling that they were on their way to see him about his permission of Kenovan to their door. His suspicions were realized almost immediately upon their arrival. It was the guard that spoke first and foremost. There was a sense of warning in his voice that unsettled the Hall master to such a degree that for a few moments he was very worried for his life. "Mr. Darsel." He said. "Were you not compensated for seeing to it we were not disturbed." "I...I... My lord, please let-" Darsel began. "Yet you allowed Kenovan to knock at our door this very morn." Ben continued. "Tis true- but you do not-" He began but was interrupted by the guard who seemed to be making a very distinct point. "How fortunate for you my master is a kind and generous man who is willing to over look this breach in his trust, provided there are no further misunderstandings." Ben said. "You may find it difficult conducting future business without the benefit of one or both of your hands." Darsel, must have turned a shade of pale even more than his usual pallor. The sheer terror of the thought of losing a hand as a result of such an act was so abhorrent to him. He could only stutter and shake his head, he was so frightened that he almost forgot to make the gesture of supplication. "Now that we have your attention m'lady wishes to speak with you." Ben stated stepping back and placing his left hand on the hilt of his sword, Darsel noticed and he was unable to prevent the shiver that ran down his spine. "Obviously since we find ourselves with a guest my respected husband wishes to show him all due courtesy." She began, " To that end I wish you to send a servant up with hot drinks and some food that they may both be comfortable during their negotiations. Also, since we are strangers here I crave your indulgence and would ask if you could possibly give me some information regarding our guest so that we not offend him by our ignorance of him and his esteemed family." She removed a small pouch out of her dress pocket. She made a show of weighing it in the palm of her hand before smiling at Darsel. "Obviously we will recompense you both for your generous hospitality and your help in this delicate matter." She added. "I must first apologize, milady." Darsel began. "Had I known the extent of your husband's goodness and generosity I would have died before I had given any credence to Kenovan's demands. But one must understand, that here, there is no house richer or more dangerous to one's livelihood than that of House Rajl. They have long been the ruling merchant class here, and to counter their wishes is akin to death, for one loses all their holdings and finds their debts held by enemies who determine only to have one cast down into the pits of poverty and despair that is known to those without a caste." I see now that it must be true that in your land, your Husband is certainly the man most capable like that noble house as I have recently spoken, yet he is a kind and just master, keen to reward for good service and slow to punish for an honest mistake. Please speak to him and tell him I knew not his disposition, but only of the reputation of the man whom would force me to reveal your husband's chambers to him. "I shall tell you all of Kenovan, for he is the last living son of the House of Rajl, having it is said seen his brothers to their deaths. His depravity is that of a wretched possessor, keen to grab a treasure and then keep it hidden away from sight when he has grown dull of its luster. he is this way with women, and with those who were once his ally. He is known for his power, for he owns all the trading houses within this city in some manner, so that those lesser houses call him lord and master, in name if not in actuality. His name is feared by all honest working folk, as his slightest disagreement can mean the loss of all good fortune, so that none will lend a coin to feed their neighbor if he forbids it." "I beg you. Do not reveal these words unto him, for if he had heard I spoke so poorly of him, I should find myself begging in the street by nightfall. But impress upon your husband my good nature to aid him in his endeavors that he should remember me should I fall upon poor times within my lifetime. I beg you please see this one thing done, and I shall forever be thy keen, kind and humble servant, owing all fortune and kindness unto your husband and his kin. My words are only this in his regards, do not fall into Kenovan's graces or allow him to act as friend to your house, for surely as the twin suns do rise, if you do he shall consume you and yours and your fortunes till none remain with which to feed your family." (reply Caskie, Soma) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - CTAC Lt. sg Ben Soma- 0823) Ben stood there never taking his eyes off Darsel as Caskie offered more compensation and then asked about Kenovan. Though shaken Darsel seemed eager to make amends for allowing the merchant access to their quarters. Seems this Kenovan was the last of his line and accustomed to getting what he wanted, he was very powerful and influential in the city. Ben didn't like the sound of that, Captain Salid would surely decline his offer and that would make things very difficult for them. How would Kenovan react to the rejection? How far would he go to get Signos? One thing was for sure, things were about to get very complicated indeed. Darsel warned them not to fall into Kenovan's graces since he would surely lead their house to ruin, Ben had a feeling the merchant would try to do just that either way. Then a thought occurred to him, Kenovan might send someone to ambush their caravan. They would then have to explain it's absence when the merchant revealed the fact there was no caravan. Being who he was he wouldn't be questioned as to why he saw fit to send someone to look for it. This complicated matters, no doubt Kenovan would have them watched possibly for an opportunity to abduct Signos. They had come here to help these people and now they may be forced to fight them, he didn't like this new turn but he would be prepared for it. Darsel seemed sincere enough, he doubted after the fright he had been given he would dare lie to them now. Ben may have layed it on a bit heavy with the threat to cut off his hands but one thing he couldn't do was tolerate dishonor. He remained motionless as Darsel and Caskie continued, still watching the hall master for any sign of dishonesty. (reply Caskie, Darsel) (posted by Milo Young) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - Lt. Sanok - Day 11 - 0825) On the outward, Sanok showed no reaction of any kind to Salid's response to Kenovan's request to be betrothed to Ensign Signos. Inwardly, however, he was in utter disbelief. Oh, he knew Salid would refuse the request, and his reason, that Signos was already promised to another man, was clever, but to be so brash and insulting to Kenovan? Nothing but trouble was going to come from it. Just like the incident the evening before with the elderly man that had a heart attack, Sanok wondered how this was going to affect their mission. "I will withdraw on my own accord," stated Kenovan, his voice hinting at anger, "but don't think such an insult will go unanswered." He moved to exit the room. Sanok followed Kenovan, staying close, but far enough away from him to avoid starting a fight. Once outside amongst the noises of the street, Sanok tried to hear what the angry merchant was saying to his guards. Unfortunately, he was able to discern only an occasional word, but what he heard, was bad. Waiting for a few moments to insure things were clear, he went back inside the inn. Before going back upstairs, he noticed Ben and Dr. Caskie at the desk, talking with the proprietor. "I do not have time to explain now," Sanok said to Ben in a quiet voice, "but watch your backs. I believe we have just made a dangerous enemy." Once he was back upstairs, Sanok gave Salid a report of what he heard from Kenovan. "Sir, I was not able to hear everything that was said, but I believe Kenovan is sending search parties to find our disabled caravan." The ramifications of that, did not need to be spoken. A difficult mission just became even more so. A person she did not know well replied "I am Mariah." Dahlia searched her memory. The woman before her was a friend of Ben Soma. Dahlia thought carefully about the last mission. Thomas, her husband, had told her how Ben Soma and his friend Sanok, looked for Mariah. Mariah was forced into slavery. Dahlia smiled and said" Hi. I am Dahlia Jackson. I was ordered to report by the first officer for a physical checkup." (Reply: Mariah) Dahlia's told Mariah about her pregnancy and how far along she was. (Reply: Mariah) While waiting for the duty doctor to appear, they talked about the burdens of loving starfleet officers. Seems the two women shared similar experiences. (Reply:Mariah) (Posted: Bill W.) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - CTAC Lt. sg Ben Soma- 0827) As Caskie and Darsel spoke Ben heard movement behind him, turning he saw Kenovan and his entourage. The merchant didn't look very pleased, Salid had refused him Signos as a bride. Would he retaliate in any way, would he have them watched, ambushed or maybe even order them killed? Ben didn't like these questions but he had to consider them very strongly. A few moments later Sanok was at his side with a warning. "I do not have time to explain now," Sanok said to Ben in a quiet voice, "but watch your backs. I believe we have just made a dangerous enemy." Ben nodded as his friend turned to head back up the stairs. When Caskie had learned all she could from Darsel they returned to the main room just and entered as Sanok was giving his report to the Captain. "Sir, I was not able to hear everything that was said, but I believe Kenovan is sending search parties to find our disabled caravan." Sanok reported. Everyone in the room knew what that would result in, they were going to have to be careful now. "From what we learned from Darsel this Kenovan is a very powerful man." Ben stated. "He basically owns Celdebrai City, nothing happens here that he isn't aware of. He could make things very difficult for us if he so chooses, and from what Darsel said it's likely he will. Kenovan is the last of his line and is accustomed to getting what he wants, if he desires Signos for his bride he'll find a way to get her. We have to be very careful from here on in, Kanovan will likely have us watched and possibly will have men waiting in ambush." Things had taken a bad turn, they had come here to help these people not fight them. If they could not move freely their task had just gotten much harder. (reply Salid, any present) (posted by Milo Young) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - Jamil Tamar- 0833) Jamil watched as Kenovan entered the travelers hall, no one payed him any attention. It was almost as if he wasn't even there, years ago he had been a wealthy man. He had a prosperous shop which traded in many unique goods, rare artifacts, cloth so light the wearer hardly knew they had it on, all things from the far reaches. He had come to Celdebrai to expand his business and seek new partners, he found Kenovan. At first he was more then happy to help, he gave names and locations of all the higher ups. Jamil had set up shop and things were good for a time, then Kenovan became more and more presistant in his demands and his payments. Jamil soon found he was no longer the master of his shop, before he knew it Kenovan had taken everything from him and cast him out. Jamil vowed revenge, now he felt he was getting closer to that. Kenovan no doubt looked to ally himself with the new arrivals so he could do the same to them. A short time later Kenovan left the hall, none to pleased. Looks like the new arrival had rejected him, not a wise decision. Jamil had to find a way to speak with the master of the new arrivals, he waited until Kenovan passed mumbling something about a caravan and not hurting some flower. Once they had left Jamil entered the hall and went to the desk to speak with Darsel. Making the gesture of greeting and bowing slightly he leaned over the desk to speak. "Friend Darsel." Jamil said. "It's been a long time." (reply Darsel) "Many risings have come and gone but I have returned from exile, I seek an audience with the master of the new arrivals. A matter of great urgency must be discussed." Jamil said. (reply Darsel) "Surely you could speak with them and convince them to permit me to speak with this Jalad." (reply Darsel) "I wish you no ill will but what I have to say is of great import." Jamil pleaded. (reply Darsel) "Of course, forgive me." Jamil said as he dropped a pouch containing a few coins on the desk. "Pass a message along for me. Tell the master I have information he needs, I'll be waiting near the stable should he wish to hear what I have to say." (reply Darsel) Jamil stepped back making the gesture of gratitude before pulling a hood over his head to leave the hall. Once outside he headed towards the stable hoping that the new arrivals would hear him out, he didn't want Kenovan to do to them what he had done to him. Kenovan's rein was drawing to a close and Jamil wanted to be part of his downfall, he had waited many cycles for it. Marah had to admit she hadn't decided whether or not she wanted kids but seeing how happy Dahlia was she began to consider the idea more strongly. Would Ben be open to the idea, family was very important to him. Now that he had his parents back he was happier then Marah had ever seen him, losing them so long ago had been very hard on him. Would he like the idea of being a dad? The only down side Marah could see was the sneezing, Bajoran women sneezed a lot during their pregnancy. Marah understood where Dahlia was coming from, a name was unique. If Ben was open to the idea of having children they would have to pick out names too, what would they call their children. Ben was a pretty traditional man, would he want a son named after his father or maybe even himself or would he prefer another name. She would have to wait until Ben returned to discuss the matter. "I know what you mean." Marah said. "Everyone has their own paths, I'm glad mine lead me to Ben. Did he tell you how we met?" Marah thought back to that night on Axtis, she saw been at the bonfire but was a little to nervous to talk with him out right. She had waited until he started moving through the crowd and when he wasn't paying attention to where he was going she stepped in front of him so they would bump into each other. "Ben thought our meeting was accidental but I stepped in front of him on purpose. He looked confident as he moved, not like the others who were staggering around from consuming to much alcohol. Fuller – 1642) The Lieutenant yielded the floor to Chief Fuller so that he could explain the breathing apparatus. “Thank you sir.” Nate said pulling out two pairs of cases, which he opened. As he passed out the masks that looked something like a medical oxygen mask without the tubing, a little bulkier and the addition of a sealed goggles, ensuring eyes, nose and mouth were covered and sealed. “As the lieutenant said, the atmosphere in the chutes are not conducive to humanoid life. It’s not really the lack of oxygen, as Mister Maddox’s findings indicate there is actually more oxygen in the space then the 21% most of us are used to. It’s the addition of various vaporized hydrocarbons in that atmosphere, and methane that not only make the air poisonous and irritating to our delicate respiratory membranes, but with the oxygen in the mix make it flammable. So to use the masks…” Nate explained and was interrupted by one of the security crewmen. “So Chief if the gas is flammable we can’t use phasers or plasma torches to cut through, how are we getting in?” One of security men asked. “I believe chemically, some kind of acid gel-spray, but please hold all your questions not pertaining to the mask, the gas or it’s health effects to Lieutenant Xim after the medical briefing.” Nate answered, and then continued. “Using the masks is usually fairly simple, you just wear it and breath normally. The built in filters will take care of any inhaled irritants or toxic fumes that aren’t exotic. All the filters are new, but some species and even individuals are more sensitive to the changes then others. The onboard computer attempts to get the oxygen mix as close to the 21% we are all used to, but sometimes it falls short, and you may get dizzy. If this happens press the blue button on either side and the mask will start a chemical reaction that will release more oxygen when two chemicals and a catalyst are combined. This will increase the oxygen content the individual is breathing by 5 to 10% for approximately 30 minutes. It has the side effect of warming the wearer’s face only by about 2-3 degrees Celsius. An audible alarm will sound when you have approximately 5 minutes left. This will allow you time to exit the space if need be by beaming out. Any medical questions?” (reply any) Once the questions, if any were answered, Nate yielded before back to Lieutenant Xim. “Then back to you, sir.” (Reply Xim) As Lieutenant Xim finished out the operational part of the briefing Nate collected the empty cases and beamed them back to the Rose. Xim - Day 11- 1645) The arrival of the away team on the Rogue planet was nothing particularly exciting, at least it wasn't at the outset, until he realized that the proliferation of the life forms had advanced since the few days that the away team had been here prior, Since he was very clear that Evolution was not so swift, this one fact alone seemed to almost prove that there was an advanced intelligence at work here. He ordered the team to move closer to the 'volcanic vents' which were now well known to be artificial ventilation exhaust units that were responsible for the atmospheric production of noble gases and oxygen needed to promote life on this otherwise hostile little world. The detection of the artificial caverns deep beneath the surface seemed the most likely place that the away team would find any level of proof that they might need to aid the survival of the Asrai. The problem was that direct beam-in was impossible, so one of the rangers had come up with an alternate means of gaining access to the underground facility. The team had been assembled and everyone briefed. There was very little left to do now except to make their way to the launch area and to see what they could discover hidden beneath the frozen surface of the rogue planet. "As you are all aware we will be making our way down one of the ventilation shafts into the subterranean facility below. As these chutes do not contain an atmosphere conducive to our particular biology, Chief fuller will now brief us on the use of the the specialized atmospheric masks he has brought for our trip." Xim turned the floor over to Nate for the final portion of the briefing. the chief went on to explain the use of the masks. The dangers inherent to the descent as well as the shortness of the window for entry. he also addressed the question of gaining access to the facility at the bottom of the shaft. Once the questions, if any were answered, Nate yielded before back to Lieutenant Xim. “Then back to you, sir.” "We have a very short window of operation. That said, we must be ready to deploy in..." he checked his chronometer twenty minutes, at 1700 hours. The time to traverse the three hundred and fifty-meters will be a short twenty-five minutes, by that time if we are not clear of the chute we will be roasted alive by the plasma discharges that take place inside the chute. " "The team will deploy anchors on all sides of the primary vent." he pointed to the closest vent, and at exactly 1700 hours we will begin our descent. The rangers will lead the way, and they will breach the base of the chute using crystalline polymer sprays that draw thermal energy from alloyed metal making it contract rapidly and causing it to lose its flexibility. We will gain entry into the facility below and see what we can discover." He turned to Lieutenant Jackson. You, mister Maddox and Chief Fuller will be responsible for setting up the pattern enhancers, so that the team will be able to beam out of the facility when we are finished. You will then begin your sweep to the west of our entry area taking along a security team. I will lead a team in the opposite direction. Is everyone clear on our mission?" (reply Fuller, Maddox, Jackson) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (Rogue Planet –Landing Site Alpha COPS Lt. Tom Jackson Day 11 -1648) Tom listened closely. LT. Xim explained how they were to enter the actual survey area. Using a volcanic vent was something new. The vents seemed to a bit small for Tom's tastes. He had a slight issue with small enclosed spaces. He was sweating a bit now. Xim went onto caution his team. He emphasized timing was crucial. ~That's an ubderstatement if I heard one~ Tom mused. The thought turning into a human hotdog was not very appealing to Tom Jackson. (Reply: None) (Posted by: Bill W.) ------------------------- (Rogue Planet – Landing Site Alpha - GSL- Lt. Xim - Day 11- 1657) The away team had managed to plant their rappelling anchors into the sides of the vent walls while simultaneously managing to hold back their revulsion at the myriad of slimy segmented insect and crustacean analogs that squirmed all over the area. With everyone ready for the moment to deploy down the chute, Xim took a few moments to remind himself why he was here and what it was he was to achieve. His massive frame would take up a great deal of the fairly narrow vent shaft, enough so that he would be waiting to descend to the last possible minute. He didn't want to risk getting caught somewhere down the shaft and causing a pile-up that would be hazardous to those following behind him. The crackle of electricity could clearly be heard rumbling deep within the chute, and it was accompanied by the smell of ozone and the constant deluge of carbon rich ash that was perpetually falling all around the vents. At least the masks that Fuller had brought along would be useful in preventing the ash from entering the airways and eyes of the team as they moved down the shaft. The Chronometer ticked onward, and the rangers, under Coopers temporary command, seemed almost to sense the moment of their action as it approached. They quickly double checked their lines, and then the lines of those around them. With a silent thumbs up, they indicated that everything was ready to go, and that was the signal for Xim to order everyone to put on their masks and to move into position. "Masks on!" the massive Lieutenant called, "And move forward ready to deploy!" Xim pulled on his own mask and felt the slight tugging at the edges of his face as the osmotic membranes suctioned themselves to the flesh of his skin. Once the seal was established the built-in HUD flickered to life, displaying oxygen content, life-support status and other critical metrics. It ran through a quick diagnostic, indicating it had successfully linked up with his tricorder and his commbadge, so that he would be able to use them both hands free if necessary. The chronometer in the upper left corner of the display reached 1700 hours and Xim said simply, "Xim to away team, deploy" As if they were springs, just waiting to release the pent-up energy that they contained, the Rangers bounded into the air backwards, allowing the force of gravity, to pull them downward into the vent, even as the last of the plasma discharges went silent. Xim watched as they disappeared over the edge of the vent, moving downwards with a grace and alacrity that he almost envied. He was fast for a Betelgeusean, but not nearly as smooth as a human officer of similar proportions. His size was somewhat awkward sometimes, especially when you considered that he stood nearly 9-feet tall and weighed close to 182 kilos. His natural size had helped him rise through the ranks quickly, although sometimes he wondered why had had not chosen to enter the Security Branch rather than Sciences. As the last member of the team dropped over the side, Xim prepared himself for his own descent into the maw of Hell. The space would make him feel confined, but he understood that it was only a state of mind. He was much more concerned with the prospect of being trapped in the shaft and fried alive. Finally the Chronometer flipped over to the time when Xim had to deploy. With a deep breath, he stepped over the edge and slightly bounded off the encrusted interior vent wall and began his downward descent. Despite the tightness of the shaft, Xim managed to reach the bottom with no real difficulty, save that of maneuvering around the probes that were most likely responsible for the plasma discharges in the first place. The floor to the chute had been shattered. The polymer mixture having performed it's work exceptionally efficiently. Xim squeezed past the edges of the hole, and dropped down to the floor of a corridor below. He had only just touched the deck, when the Plasma discharges resumed their hellish work above him. The corridor was narrow, just slightly more so than those found aboard the Rosenante, and already the security teams had deployed to make a perimeter, while a small squad set up the transport Pattern enhancers that they had brought for their eventual escape. The floor and walls were slightly pitted affairs, made of some imperfectly polished stone layered with a light metallic anodized sheath in a rich gray. There were light bars midway up the wall, which stretched at least 12 feet high. Metal grating reached from the walls to some sort of assembly that was built into the center line of the ceiling. Pipes and access points were apparent along the wall, near the floor, and they were occasionally broken only by a pair of adjacent glowing red light panels. At either end of the corridor were a pair of double doors, marked with some strange symbols, that Xim had not seen. He supposed that they declared the contents of the room beyond, much like the compartments in a starship might be labeled. A pair of crooked light bars glowing in neon blue hung over the doors. The floor was smooth, reminding him more of plasticrete than natural stone. "Okay." He said after taking in the situation, "Here's where we separate. Stay in touch and be careful. remember we only have a rough idea what this place is used for. We do not know if there are any inhabitants or if there may be any sort of automated defenses. Stay sharp and stay aware." He looked over at Jackson and Fuller. "Take your team in that direction Mister Jackson. I'll go in this direction. Maddox, you're with me."
