"O'Neill, you and Matrix need to make a wide survey of the area. You might start with the seminaries, and any other public areas or buildings. Get a look around and start trying to find some level of technology." "Aye, Sir," Eian responded immediately, and then listened to Matrix's findings of high energy levels in the center of the city. "Perhaps we should investigate that tonight. We'll have the cover of dark and less people watching us," Eian suggested. (reply any) The Captain requested their names, and Eian had put a lot of thought into that particular decision. A name was important to him. Having so recently been 2 of 5, he had clung to his identity as Eian. This mission was slightly difficult for him, for that reason. He didn't know many Asrai names, let alone their meanings. He ended up choosing a name he had heard in the marketplace. "Ralek, Sir," he answered. When the meeting was concluded, he turned to Matrix. "Would you like to leave now, or do you need some time to get the equipment ready? I'm set to go," he said. He had prepared the equipment during the hour before the meeting, just in case they would want to leave right afterwards to collect data. (reply Matrix) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Traveler's Hall - aCMO Lieutenant (Jg) Tayla Fraiser - Day 10 - 1834) The woman sat next to her chuckled a bit and replied, "That sounds well, maybe one of the diners or gardens in the market could also help in our search. Maybe we should end the night going to the bath house, and we mustn't leave mother out she would never forgive us if we did such a thing and not invite her after how long we've been on the road. So Naylan where do you wish to start." Tayla rose from her seat and said, "Let's go down through the market and see some of the gardens. There should be people around there this time of night. It would be interesting to see what sort of gestures we can pick up on." (Reply Signos) Tayla, glanced back at Parker talking to Caskie and smiled a little, said, "Oh i don't know. I think there's going to be plenty to see." Shaking her head, she turned back and said, "Lead on, dear sister." (reply Signos) (Posted by Jackie Smith) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Traveler's Hall - COUNS Parker Davis - Day 10 - 1836) The Captain turned to the counselor and gave him his assignment. "Mister Davis, I'd like for you and Commander Caskie to focus on any identifiable public works. Locate and identify them. A population like this will need bureaucracy. Bureaucracy means education. Schools, libraries, government buildings. See what you can do to increase our knowledge of the history and development and administration of this culture." "Aye, Sir," Parker answered. He started thinking about the ways he could accomplish this, comparing this civilization's social and political structure to others to predict where they might be headed. Eventually, the Captain asked for their chosen names. Parker hadn't really thought about this extensively, but he had chosen a 'backup' name if he couldn't think of anything else at the end of the day. It was the name of one of the first people they had spoken to in the market. "I've chosen Ikan," he stated, thinking somewhat humorously to himself that the name Ikan (I-Can) was probably going to be the butt of a few jokes from Tayla. (room for more if necessary) Once everyone was finished speaking, Commander Caskie turned to Parker and said, "Mr. Davis, I'm not sure when most of the public buildings will close here, however if you're up for a walk perhaps we could at least wander around for a while and map them out and return and figure out a plan of action. What do you think?" Parker nodded. "Yes, Sir, that sounds like an excellent idea." He wasn't sure which of them was in command, since she outranked him but he was Second in Command of the mission. He assumed that they would simply work together on the project as equals, but he would still be formal when they were in private and address her properly. There should be people around there this time of night. It would be interesting to see what sort of gestures we can pick up on." "Yes I think that will be a good place to start then who knows what will happen next." Jessica replied. She was told to lead on has the exited their rooms and headed down to the main lobby. Soma was already there waiting on them already slipping out of the room earlier. He seemed a bit annoyed that Tayla and Jessica had taken so long to get ready. It wasn't long after that they were off heading toward the closest of the gardens. (reply any none needed.) She waited until almost everyone had trooped outside and split up and the she turned to him. "Parker, I hope you don't mind me calling you that. I thoroughly dislike being called Sir. If you feel the need to be formal then by all means call me Doctor, however I would prefer to be called Josh, or Jennifer or Jenny." (Reply Parker) She waited for a moment and then continued. "Also, and you are the person who might possibly tell me if I am right or wrong about this, but I do believe that by calling people by their first name, especially on an away mission like this helps to strengthen the bonds between the team." (Reply Davis) (Posted by Marilyn) -------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - COUNS Parker Davis - Day 10 - 1843) "Parker, I hope you don't mind me calling you that. I thoroughly dislike being called Sir. If you feel the need to be formal then by all means call me Doctor, however I would prefer to be called Josh, or Jennifer, or Jenny," Caskie told him, and Parker nodded, glad for the clarification. "That sounds fine to me, Josh," he said, picking what he hoped was the name her peers most commonly used. He had only been aboard a short while and had yet to sit down at length with Caskie. He knew little about her and her style of command. He also felt a bit like a fish out of water on an away mission like this. He was not used to being under cover and the most sophisticated mission he had any command role in was an Academy exercise. Before that, it was a Detroit Community Theatre play in which he starred as General George Meade during the Battle of Gettysburg. Though he was Second in Command, he had a feeling he was going to be spending most of this mission observing what other people did instead of giving instructions. "Also, and you are the person who might possibly tell me if I am right or wrong about this," Josh continued, "But I do believe that by calling people by their first name, especially on an away mission like this, helps to strengthen the bonds between the team." He nodded. "That's what research would indicate, yes. But it depends on the mission, and it depends on the team. A cohesive team is usually built of people who have general respect for one another but complement instead of overlap each others' talents. I think we have an excellent mix here." (reply Caskie iyw) "Can I ask where 'Josh' came from?" he inquired curiously. "I've never heard Jennifer shortened that way before, but I might just be culturally unaware," he explained. (reply Caskie, room for more) He nodded. "Interesting. Parker was my mom's maiden name. All the men in my family have their mother's maiden names as their first names. My dad was called Charlie but his name was Charles, my grandma's maiden name." (reply Caskie iyw) "Shall we get going?" he asked, and gestured toward the door. (reply Caskie) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - CMO - Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 10 - 1845) Parker nodded and answered her. "That's what research would indicate, yes. But it depends on the mission, and it depends on the team. A cohesive team is usually built of people who have general respect for one another but complement instead of overlap each others' talents. I think we have an excellent mix here." Josh simply nodded at his comment, not willing to share any more of her ideas or feelings with him just yet. Their was a slight pause in the conversation which Parker filled. "Can I ask where 'Josh' came from? I've never heard Jennifer shortened that way before, but I might just be culturally unaware," Taken unawares by the question Josh stopped walking and then laughed softly and shook her head. "Oh my, it's a long time since I was asked that question and an even longer time to go back to the answer, and yes, you are right it isn't a derivative of Jennifer. It's a nickname and a silly one at that." She paused for a while remembering her past and smiling turned to Parker. "Caskie is my married name. My family name is Herries and when I was at Kirkwall Academy there were two Jennifer Herries in my class. Myself and my second cousin. To differentiate between the two of us the teachers decided that we would use our initials for our course work and exams. My name was Jennifer Olivia Susan Herries so I used the initials J.O.S.H. One new teacher misread it and thought my name was Josh. Everyone at school found it hilarious and the name stuck and I've been Josh ever since. My parents called me Jennifer, my brothers and sisters call me Jenny. Most of the folk on the Rose call me Josh with the exception of the Captain and one other. They both call me Jennifer. As I said you may call me what you feel most comfortable with. It makes no difference to me." "Interesting. Parker was my mom's maiden name. All the men in my family have their mother's maiden names as their first names. My dad was called Charlie but his name was Charles, my grandma's maiden name." Josh grinned at him. "To be honest Parker family names are more common than you think and they usually go back a long way in time." Parker gestured to the door. "Shall we get going?" Nodding Josh motioned for him to lead the way. "Why not." (Reply Parker) (Posted by Marilyn) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - ACEO Lt Eian O'Neill - Day 10 - 1847) "O'Neill...take a look at this." Matrix looked up the the tall stone monolith they were now facing. "It must be at least 10 meters." continued Matrix. Eian nodded as he looked up at the black stone monolith. He then looked around at their surroundings to make sure nobody was staring. "Are you able to scan it?" "My scanner hasn't completed the energy scan yet, but I'd bet this monolith isn't made of the same ignous rocks in this area. It looks similar to granite but I'm no geologist." replied Matrix "I'd agree from what I can see but I can't wait to see what the scan comes up with," he said, still looking around as if he was sight-seeing. A few people passed by, but the population was greatly diminished at night. "The energy scan is complete. There is a high concentration of artifical energy within this building, about 15 meters to the south. I suggest we proceed there while taking in as much information as we can about these structures, artifacts and architecual surroundings." "Agreed," Eian stated, and took the lead, hand always on his weapon just in case. It was partly him playing the part of 'guard', and partly because of their earlier encounter with the youths. If children could harass adults and get away with it, he didn't want to come across trouble with their elders. As they passed the various sculptures and artifacts, Eian recognized that this was a culture steeped in history. A history buff himself, it was something he could appreciate and something that made him extremely curious. He wanted to learn more about this species--how they came about, how they advanced, what their myths and legends were, and what the realities were that backed those ideas. "I'd like to get a detailed scan of this monolith and some visual references, but that might be difficult without alarming these people. They may not take to our image recorders too well." replied Matrix. "I'll keep watch and if anyone asks, I'll just tell them we've never seen anything like this where we come from, and are very curious about it," he answered his superior. "I'll get started on a reference can," Matrix stated. "It should take about 10 minutes to complete so look like you belong here." said Matrix as he smiled. "You got it," Eian said, and started walking around casually, browsing a sculpture here and a statue there. After about five minutes had passed, he spotted some of the local law enforcement a few minutes away, making their way toward them. They didn't appear to be in a hurry, but Eian casually turned back and strolled over to Matrix. "How close are you? We're going to get company in a few minutes." (reply Matrix) "You'd better hurry, Sir," he said in a low tone. "The local law enforcement probably has little tolerance for tourists crowding their monolith." (reply Matrix iyw) Eian returned to his 'patrol,' smiling and making the gesture of passive greetings for a mother and her young son as they passed by silently. The gesture was returned without incident, but the woman pulled the child away as if to protect him. ~They probably think I had the 'disease' when I was younger, too...~ He felt the scar tissue on his face briefly...it covered his implants and made it so the locals would think him slightly disfigured, but wouldn't see the Borg technology embedded in his skin. He wondered vaguely if that contributed to the story of the 'pox' or whatever it was. Moments later, the authorities were closer and Eian walked back over to Matrix. It appeared that his superior officer was just about done. "It is spectacular, isn't it?" he said loudly, both getting Matrix's attention and pointing out their 'tourist' mentality to the officers, who were now within earshot. (reply Matrix, local authorities) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - CMO - Cmdr - Josh Caskie - Day 10 - 1851) "Mother," he said, "do you think there's an odd amount of light in this city at night?" It was one of the first things Parker had noticed. The city was getting dark, but for the level of technology there should have been little more than a dim light emanating from the various torches and street lamps that were laid out. Instead, there seemed to be an almost fluorescent look to the city at night, and Parker wondered where it was coming from, or if perhaps the planet's geology or atmospheric composition led to that sort of effect. Josh looked up at the sky and nodded her head. "Yes, your right. It almost reminds me of the Northern Lights but not quite. Have you ever seen them? They were a fairly common phenomenon where I grew up, but there's just something too uniform about this light for it to be atmospheric. I would expect a colour change as the wavelength of the light shifted." She hesitated for a moment. "Although to be honest I am no scientist and the difference could well have something to do with their Binary Stars for all I know. I'll take a reading and remind me to bring it up at our next meeting please." Manipulating the jewel hanging around her neck she took a reading and then turned to Parker. "Ok, where do you suggest we head next? I would suggest we stick to the wider streets since I would imagine they are most likely to lead to any public areas. What do you think?" (Reply Parker) (Posted by Marilyn) -------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Lt. Sanok - Day 10 - 1852) The initial discussions had concluded, and Captain Salid had given assignments. Sanok was to explore the city with Signos and Fraiser, posing as their bodyguard, while the three did more studying of the Asrai gestures and the emotions that went with them. Sanok had prepared quickly, gathering his weapons and insuring that his tricorder was hidden well. He was on the street in front of the inn, waiting for the women to finish and join him outside. Though the Rosenante team was still in a precarious position here, not understanding the culture or much of the language, Sanok had to admit that this was not an unpleasant place. He was a product of modern conveniences, but his two trips to Axtis III with Ben, had caused him to at least have a cursory appreciation of simpler ways. Since they were going to be here for nearly three weeks, he would be relying on his Axtis experiences for what would be coming. As people passed by on the street, Sanok began to notice a pattern. Some people would ignore him. Others would look at him, and would at least acknowledge he was there. Still others would stop and give him the gesture of respect. It was clearly because of the caste system, so he began committing to memory what the people were wearing, their hair styles, the colors they wore, and anything else that stood out. It was a small sample size, but he was beginning to form a mental database. Sanok glanced back at the door to the inn, but still no Signos or Fraiser. In the time they took to prepare to go out, they definitely weren't Vulcan women. (reply any) (posted by Bob B.) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - CEO LCRD Steven Matrix - Day 10 - 1853) Matrix looked up to notice what Eian had already seen. "Almost done...just a few moments left." replied Matrix. The tricorder wasn't the fastest instrument they carried on away missions and more than on one occasion Matrix wished it would perform with greater speed and this was yet another instance of that wishful thinking. The familiar 'please wait' flashed on the small screen and the progress bar seemed to move backyards. Matrix again looked up in the direction of the approaching law enforcement pair. ~Damn it.~ thought Matrix. "You'd better hurry, Sir," he said in a low tone. "The local law enforcement probably has little tolerance for tourists crowding their monolith." "Agreed Lieutenant, it should be about done. Stall them while I walk around so the south side to buy more time." requested Matrix as he gingerly walked out of view of the two enforcement officers. (Reply O'Neill) "Matrix looked at O'Neill slightly puzzled at his question, then quickly noticed the proximity of the officers. "Yes it is one of the finest specimens I've ever seen. The craftsmanship is definitely of master's quality." replied Matrix. (Reply O'Neill) "I wonder where this material was quarried?" asked Matrix trying to conjure a historical conversation with the officers now within arms reach. Matrix continued to look perplexed by the monolith and walked closer to the officers. "Excuse me, but can you tell me anything about this masterpiece?" asked Matrix (Reply O'Neill - room for more) (Posted by Steve) -------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Lt. Sanok - Day 10 - 1854) People were beginning to stare. Sanok had been standing in front of the Travelers Inn, waiting for Fraiser and Signos for a while now, and people were noticing. It seemed that loitering was viewed as suspicious behavior. None of the people passing by had said anything, but Sanok didn't know how long that would last. Thus far, no one from law enforcement had approached him; he hadn't seen any, but since his presence in one place without doing anything was causing some sort of discomfort to the people, he had to do something. It supposed he would need to go back inside to find the ladies. "Hey, karul. What are you doing now?" The smaller of the two boys from the street was standing there. Sanok wasn't sure what to make of this, as the bigger boy was the one that started the trouble. "What do you want?" said Sanok. The boy rotated his left shoulder and looked down at the ground. Was that similar to shrugging one's shoulders? It seemed likely. "Shev didn't really mean it when he called you a karul." Shev was probably the bigger boy's name. This boy seemed to be apologizing. Sanok wished he had a better understanding of the Asrai culture. "Yes, he did mean it," said Sanok. "However, I was not insulted, for I am not karul." "I know. It was mean for Shev to say that." He made a gesture that Sanok believed to be one of apology. "I just wanted you to know that," said the boy. He made the gesture of respect and ran away, disappearing into the crowd. ~That was most odd.~ thought Sanok. Before he could ponder the ramifications of this, the door to the inn opened and Fraiser and Signos stepped outside. Playing the part, he bowed to them. "My ladies, are you ready to explore the city?" After some short conversation, they began walking to one of the gardens near the center of town. (reply Fraiser, Signos) (posted by Bob B.) -------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Gardens - Lieutenant (Jg) Tayla Fraiser - Day 10 - 1900) As they walked towards the gardens, Tayla felt a smile grow on her face. Despite the last few hours not being in her own skin, things had gone amazingly. She felt at peace with herself and the others. She felt a sense of pride in this ship and, most of all, she felt something special growing between her and Parker. It seemed a little strange how quickly it had all happened but it felt right and she trusted it. Looking at the greenery that they had walked into, it took her breath away. It seemed like an explosion of colour and fragrance. Different flowers fluttered in the breeze and a few couples and single people moved around in various degrees of conversation. Spotting a small bench, she turned to Signos and said, "My dear sister, shall we take the scenery a while?" (Reply Signos) Tayla sat and began to watch the scene unfold. a young couple wandered past them. Their mannerisms reminded her a little of the first date that she had had with Parker and a small blush flooded in her cheeks. (reply Signos, Any) (posted by Jackie Smith) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - ACEO Lt Eian O'Neill - Day 10 - 1901) The officers were approaching, and Eian alerted Matrix to their presence. "Almost done...just a few moments left." his superior officer said as he continued the scans. "You'd better hurry, Sir," Eian said in a low tone. "The local law enforcement probably has little tolerance for tourists crowding their monolith." "Agreed Lieutenant, it should be about done. Stall them while I walk around so the south side to buy more time." requested Matrix as he gingerly walked out of view of the two enforcement officers. Soon the officers were far too close for Eian to stall at all, so thinking quickly on his feet, he touched the monolith ever-so-gently and said calmly, "I think a master craftsman must have created these engravings. Did you notice the difference in the depths of the indentations?" Matrix seemed to stumble for a moment before he replied, "Yes it is one of the finest specimens I've ever seen. The craftsmanship is definitely of master's quality." "It would take a large number of cycles to complete. Perhaps a lifetime, even," he commented, pretending not to notice the officers as he stared at the engravings. He realized that his mind was committing them to photographic memory. He had only just gained the ability to tell when his mind was categorizing something as important enough to commit to memory, and had reasoned that it usually had to do with anthropological data. This made sense for a Borg drone, gathering information about potential species to assimilate. It normally was not as useful for an engineer, but as a history buff and a xeno-weaponology expert, Eian benefited immensely. "I wonder where this material was quarried?" Then Matrix actually engaged the officers in conversation. Eian stood by to back him up, a perplexed expression on his face as his department head asked, "Excuse me, but can you tell me anything about this masterpiece?" (posted by Morgan G) -------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - COUNS Parker Davis - Day 10 - 1902) After Caskie took the readings of the light patterns in the sky, she said, "Ok, where do you suggest we head next? I would suggest we stick to the wider streets since I would imagine they are most likely to lead to any public areas. What do you think?" He nodded. "Absolutely. There would need to be room for parades, for a large amount of traffic--both foot and carriage--and enough room for the police to keep an eye on everything and prevent a stampede in the event of an emergency. We're looking for bigger buildings, probably several stories high from what we saw of the hospital earlier." He glanced around, and saw a building that was five stories high with lights emanating from several of the windows. "Looks like someone's working late there," he pointed. "Want to head in that direction?" (reply Caskie) They walked toward the larger building, and Parker found himself wishing he could read the written text. He would have loved to see how they labeled their buildings. Some civilizations named their buildings for what they were, such as 'Justice Department' or 'Hospital.' Others named them for famous people, such as the 'Wilkinson Building'. As they continued their walk, Parker saw statues that seemed to indicate the function of the building. A statue of a woman tending to an injured man was outside the hospital they saw earlier, and he pointed it out to Caskie. Nearby in front of another building was a sculpture of coins sitting in a scale with a scantily-clad female operating the scale. "This reminds me of early Earth," Parker stated. "One thing concerns me, though. I'm not seeing anything about justice anywhere," he commented. "It could be that we just don't recognize the symbol," he added, glancing at a sculpture of some turtle-like animal and wondering what in the world *it* stood for. (reply Caskie) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (USS Rosenante – Cargo Bay 1 – FO – Commander T’Larah Sullivan – 2238) T’Larah was finally given the all clear sign and she entered the Shuttle Bay. The crew resumed shuffling about their business. With the exception of those who chose to greet the ship’s First Officer with a passing, “Good Evening Sir” or “Good Evening Commander.” it was almost as if she wasn’t there. She observed Tom, Dahlia and Doug stepping out of the aft of the shuttle and walking directly toward her. “Commander, Lieutenant Jackson reporting aboard for duty" adding a snappy salute and a smile. “Welcome aboard Lieutenant, however, as you are quite aware the gesture of the hand salute has been out of custom especially in Star Fleet since its inception.” Sullivan said. (Reply Lt. Jackson) “Quite alright. I take it your flight was comfortable and peacefully un-eventful.” She said glancing at Doug. Doug interjected. “Absolutely Commander. We had time to talk about the different ships we’ve been assigned to over the years. I mentioned that you and I went to the academy together.” “I take it the conversation was kept professional, because your knowledge that he was to be assigned here to the Rosenante.” T’Larah evenly. ~Oh, something like the time you punched me?~ Doug thought to himself and grinned. “I would never think to endanger your crew’s thoughts on you, the mighty First Officer, no sir.” Doug answered grin still on his face. “Tom, your former quarters is still vacant, you are of course welcome to it. In fact I’ve already assigned that quarters back to your family.” She said ignoring Lieutenant Masters for now. (Reply Tom) “Negative, it was a long night and you have to get your family settled in. I’m going to give you a late call. 1100 hours tomorrow report to the OPS station on the bridge, I don’t want to see you before that, understood?” T’Larah warned. (Reply Tom) “Good, that’s settled then. Mrs. Jackson. I see you are with child, congratulations to you both.” She said the words she selected were warmer than her even tone. (Reply Dahlia) “I understand that, but I insist that you make an appointment to see one of our doctors in sickbay. I’d recommend Dr. Oren, she’s a surgeon, but more than qualified for a preliminary obstetrics check up, just to make sure everything is going smoothly.” She said. (Reply Dahlia) ~Is that worry in her voice?~ Doug thought but kept his mouth shut just the same. “Thank you for observing ship’s protocol, even if you don’t think it’s necessary. You must be tired and anxious to get settled in, Lieutenant, I won’t keep you any longer.” (Reply Tom) The pair were getting ready to leave and were saying their good-nights and good-evenings, “Welcome home, Tom.” T’Larah said as the pair left with Masters in tow to help carry luggage.
