He had even gone out of his way to use her assumed native name, if only to get his mouth used to saying it, and to help build an instinctual response should he be required to use it unexpectedly. Jennifer had closed the door and headed across the room. About half the distance across the floor, she suddenly stopped and pressed the bridge of her nose between her forefinger and thumb. He was going to ask her if she was alright, but she gave him a usual raise of the eyebrow, which told him that she was. "I wanted to have a heart-to-heart with you." he finally said, and gestured that she take a seat on the end of the bed. "I have to say that I think I may have made a mistake in bringing us here.I obviously didn't consider the complexity of communicating with the Asrai, and as a result I may have put our away team in dire jeopardy." "I wanted your candid opinion of our situation." (reply Caskie) Daniel Greene (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Traveler's Hall - CMO - Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 10 – 1705) "I wanted to have a heart-to-heart with you." he finally said, and gestured that she take a seat on the end of the bed. Crossing to the bed Josh sat herself down on the end of it and looking up at Ahmed waited for him to continue. "I have to say that I think I may have made a mistake in bringing us here. I obviously didn't consider the complexity of communicating with the Asrai, and as a result I may have put our away team in dire jeopardy." "I wanted your candid opinion of our situation." It wasn't what Josh had expected to hear. She had never, in all the time that she had known him, hear Ahmed question his own judgement before. But she regrouped quickly and shaking her head smiled at him. "To be honest who could have guessed at the complexities of communication without doing an in depth study before hand. We didn't have the time for that and to be honest, we still don't have the time now. We're just going to have to 'wing' it so to speak. Given the fact that they don't have long range communications It's pretty safe to say that this civilization isn't a global one. There will be differences in language, gestures and culture in different areas. We are going to have to keep doing what we've been doing and pretend to be from far away, with a slightly different way of doing things and pray that they just assume that we're all country bumpkins with no manners, come to gawk at the big city for the first time and make some money at the same time." (Reply Ahmed iyw) She paused for a moment and then continued. "As for putting us all in jeopardy.....each and everyone one of us on this team is a volunteer. You know that, you specified that the away team had to be made up from volunteers long before we got here. Each and every one of us made our own separate choice to be here and you can't decide to suddenly take responsibility for that choice. That's not fair to us." (Reply Ahmed iyw) Standing up she crossed over to him a laid a hand on his shoulder. "We all knew what might happen when we volunteered for this mission. Dear lord it could happen every mission whether we volunteer or not. But you know what. The fact that you are here. Much as I personally wish you weren't, fills me with confidence. I trust your gut instinct just as much as I trust my own. I hope that answers your question." (Reply Ahmed) (Posted by Marilyn) (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Travelers Hall - CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid - Day 10- 1708) "To be honest who could have guessed at the complexities of communication without doing an in depth study before hand. Ahmed nodded. He understood that it was completely out of his character to lack any confidence in his own judgment. A captain often had to show confidence, even when there wasn't any confidence to be had. But this mission, it was eating at him in a way that no other had done before it. Billions of people depended on him to make the right decision, and for the first time, he found himself hindered by law in making the decision that he felt should be made. She paused for a moment and then continued. "As for putting us all in jeopardy.....each and everyone one of us on this team is a volunteer. You know that, you specified that the away team had to be made up from volunteers long before we got here. Each and every one of us made our own separate choice to be here and you can't decide to suddenly take responsibility for that choice. That's not fair to us." "You're right. I have no right to take that away from you. I suppose it's just the pressure of the situation getting to me. I am having a hard time reconciling my duty as a starfleet officer and my personal morals. I keep trying to remind myself of the statement, 'Where Law fails, morality must lead the way.' I'm just looking around me and I'm seeing a society devoid of significant technology, and I'm afraid of what that could mean, to myself and the officers that are here under my command. It's unlike any missions we've undertaken before, knowing that an entire planet, unaware of the dangers that are facing them, are on the verge of complete destruction, and that the only thing preventing their extinction is us." Standing up, she crossed over to him a laid a hand on his shoulder. "We all knew what might happen when we volunteered for this mission. Dear lord it could happen every mission whether we volunteer or not. But you know what. The fact that you are here. Much as I personally wish you weren't, fills me with confidence. I trust your gut instinct just as much as I trust my own. I hope that answers your question." He nodded again. "It does thank you. I just needed a little reassurance that I was doing the right thing here, that this really is a viable plan to help save these people. Admittedly it looks a bit bleak at the moment, and I'm not certain now what I was thinking when I thought of this plan. I suppose some part of me was hoping that we'd beam down, find the proverbial 'holy grail' and that our problems would be solved. But I can see now that this isn't going to be an option for us." He paused. "I'm past that doubt now. And I know we'll be successful, because we've faced worse things than this and always triumphed. I have complete faith that we'll do the right thing here, Prime Directive or no Prime Directive. I would simply prefer to do it without losing my career and my freedom or risking the same of those officers under my command." (reply Caskie) Daniel Greene ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Traveller's Hall - aCMO Lieutenant (JG) Tayla Fraiser - Day 10 - 1755) Tayla stopped outside the room where the meeting was to be held and said, "Parker, what's going on here, with us i mean?" (Reply Davies) She smiled and said, "How did i know you were going to say that?" (Reply Davies) Smiling again, she replied, "Shall we go in? Otherwise i might have to kiss you again and we'd get caught." (Reply Davies) She smiled and, letting go of his hand, walked into the room. Spotting a few others dotted about the room, she made her way towards the bed and took a seat next to Josh and Jessica. Smiling to them both, she waited patiently for the briefing to begin. "Ok. The Captain and I have made a start on deciphering the language, however I think our biggest stumbling block will be getting the gestures down pat. Until we can crack them we are at a serious disadvantage. Tayla, I know this is an imposition but would you be able to use your 'empathic talent' to try to find out what various gestures mean please?" Josh asked and as he opened her mouth to reply, another spoke, "Sirs, if I may. I've received very specific training in this respect. Most of my life I've studied facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Though I don't know the cultural or emotional meaning of many of the gestures, my training has made it so I can very easily pick them up and remember them. If Dr. Fraiser and I worked together, we could do a walk-through in the town and as I pick up what the gestures are, she could identify what their assigned emotions are." "I have no doubt this is the case," the captain replied, " but I have a different assignment in mind for you Eian. one that I will get to shortly. Doctor Fraiser," he continued, looking at her. She nodded as he continued, "If you agreed to undertake this task, I would like to team you with Sanok and Signos. In this manner the three of you can easily blend in, and should be able to move freely through most portions of the city. Sanok can portray a bodyguard, to yourself and Signos, and I think that would work well enough for our purposes. Both Signos and Sanok are trained observers and are therefore capable of performing the same task that O'Neill would have, which is to say observing, and with two of them, they can observe more area at a given time. I'd like for you to brainstorm it amongst you three and see what you can come up with." Tayla looked at the other two and said, "Sir, i'll be happy to use my empathic side in this nature. If it will help, i'm all for it." "O'Neill, You and Matrix, need to make a wide survey of the area. You might start with the seminaries, and any other public areas or buildings. Get a look around and start trying to find some level of technology." Tayla listened to the rest of the briefing with an interest and found herself watching each person as they spoke. Their emotions were evident to her in their movements. It was something she'd picked up whilst at the academy. The ability to read others without using her empathic side. It had served her well and now it was time to use her talents that she'd been born with. Turning to Jessica, she said, "You know, i'm not a bad seamstress. I might be able to knock up something for us." (Reply Signos) Tayla smiled and then heard a discussion begin on their new names. A smile crept over her face as Parker announced his name, Ikan. He caught her eye and she knew that he knew there would be merciless ribbing about that name at some point. Looking to the group, she said, "I've been thinking this over and i think that i'd like to be called Naylan." (Reply anyone) Tayla nodded and then, turning back to Jessica said, "So, my sister. Is there anywhere you think we should visit first? Perhaps a public house? see if we can get the whole range of movements and gestures in one place." (Reply Signos) Tayla smiled widely and said, "There is that as well." And laughed heartily. Glancing towards Parker, she winked a little to let him know that this was a role and that nothing was going to happen. She cared about him too much. Smiling she stood and said, "Mother, Father, if it is alright with you, Lunette and i would like to begin our study." (Reply Salid, Signos, Davies, Any) (Posted by Jackie Smith) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - COUNS Parker Davis - Day 10 - 1757) Tayla stopped outside the room where the meeting was held and held onto him as she asked, "Parker, what's going on here? With us I mean?" Parker paused a moment, and then smiled. "I think we're falling in love," he said softly. She smiled back and asked, "How did I know you were going to say that?" He touched her temple softly as he joked, "Because we're psychically linked." "Shall we go in? Otherwise I might have to kiss you again and we'd get caught," she said playfully. He chuckled, and replied, "We can continue this later." He placed his hand gently on her hip for just a moment as he guided her into the room. He could tell she was intrigued by it, but she managed not to look back, and he managed to withdraw his hand just as they entered everyone else's view. Then they took their seats, and the meeting began. (reply none) (posted by Morgan G) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Traveler's Hall - CEO - Lt. Commander Steven Matrix - Day 10 ¬ 1819) "O'Neill, You and Matrix, need to make a wide survey of the area. You might start with the seminaries, and any other public areas or buildings. Get a look around and start trying to find some level of technology." said Salid. Matrix nodded in agreement, "Aye sir. My preliminary scans show signs of technology not obvious by their day-to-day activities. I'm getting a relatively high energy reading near the center of town not far from here. An order of magnitude larger than I would expect for background planetary energy." said Matrix. (Reply any) "Now that the assignments are made, let's hear impressions, discoveries and observations. Let's start with local names. I have decided upon Jalad. Who would like to be next?" "Sir...I suspect that family bodyguards are of similar family origin, trusted and long standing servants. I would suggest, Halidian. I've observed locals with similar sir names, apparently linked to their master house names. I believe I have the dialect correct." replied Matrix. (Reply Salid, any) (Posted by Steve) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Traveler's Hall - ATAC/SC - Ensign(sg) Jessica Signos - Day 10 - 1825) Jessica listened has the Captain laid out his plans for the away team. Assigning task to certain groups has Jessica got her task she nodded accepting what the Captain had planned for her. After which Tayla turned to Jessica asking "You know, I'm not a bad seamstress. I might be able to knock up something for us." The Captain was giving assignments to the rest of the crew has Jessica slipped Tayla an answer. "Like I was just telling mother I took the opportunity to but some cloths for all us girls earlier today there in the satchels in the other room." (reply Tayla, iyw) The conversation moved to everyone bringing to light each others alias the Captain started everyone off and it then flowed around the room everyone saying what would become there new name for the next twenty days. "Lun'ette," Jessica replied when it was her turn. "For the Lun'ette flower found on this world." (reply any) The meeting continued and Jessica started to think of where to start there mission of finding and discerning the meaning behind the many hand gestures. When Tayla again spoke up. "So, my sister. Is there anywhere you think we should visit first? Perhaps a public house? see if we can get the whole range of movements and gestures in one place." Jessica chuckles a bit. "That sounds well, maybe one of the diners or gardens in the market could also help in our search. Maybe we should end the night going to the bath house, and we mustn't leave mother out she would never forgive us if we did such a thing and not invite her after how long we've been on the road." Jessica smiled at the thought it was a rare opportunity to observe foreign a culture by actually it. "So Naylan where do you wish to start." (reply Tayla, any who wish) (posted by Matthew Locke) ------------------------- (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Traveler's Hall - aCMO Lieutenant (jg) Tayla Fraiser - Day 10 - 1827) "Like I was just telling mother I took the opportunity to but some cloths for all us girls earlier today there in the satchels in the other room." Tayla smiled and said, "If i get a chance tonight, I'll take a look and see what i can knock up for us." (Asrai Prime - Celdebrai City - Traveler's Hall - CMO - Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 10- 1830) Once everyone had finished speaking Josh crossed to the Lieutenant. "Mr Davis, I'm not sure when most of the public building will close here however if you're up for a walk perhaps we could at least wander around for a while and map them out and return and figure out a plan of action. What do you think?" (Reply Davis) (Posted by Marilyn) ========================= Compiled by Jackie =========================
