It was a usual morning ritual that offered her a stable and fulfilling means to start her day. The small mission scout craft had been on station in the Irlix system now for a little over a month. Their mission was straight forward and easy enough. They were here to monitor and categorize the warp signatures that the Irlixians possessed, as well as to collect any cultural and social data that they could gleam from the various radio and video signals that were being transmitted from the hundreds of stations on the planet. The Irlixians were an intriguing species, fundamentally human, with only a few relatively minor differences physiologically. Their skin was a lavender to pale purple color and they bore some markings that were slightly reminiscent of either a Trill or of some other animal that bore limited camouflage patterns on their skin to aide them in avoiding predators. From the upper edges of their cheekbones, two small remnant horns, broke through the skin and angled back towards the ears. These thin protrusions were similar in appearance to the horns of a Terran antelope or gazelle, although they were barely longer than your extended finger. It was an unusual facial feature that readily identified them all to anyone that saw them. As she sat sipping her tea, which was now resting on the small table near her command chair, Sara reached up a brushed aside a stray lock of her brunette hair that had managed to work it's way out of the tight bun she wore and had violated the airspace claimed by her full eyelashes. She pushed the errant strand behind her left year while her eyes fixed on the PADD she held in her left. It was the latest report from Lieutenant Boranma, the Bohr's chief engineer and the lead for the warp signature study. The data was very complete and exceptionally confusing. It basically stated that the warp signatures that they had observed from the Irlixian starships, two of which were currently conducting some sort of limited tests of their own, were indeed of a style unique to that of the United Federation of planets. The main reason that this was so damned confusing is because no federation ship had ever made contact with this planet, at least not officially. Six years ago during the civil war the USS Champlain had stumbled across this blue green sphere located deep in the Beta Quadrant. Even then, the federation signature had been detected, but before that vessel could investigate they had encountered another ship which had caused quite a row. The incident had remained uninvestigated for nearly seven years until the Bohrs had been assigned to conduct a follow-up. The odds of the warp drives used by the Irlixians being close enough to those used by the federation were astronomical. Of all the hundreds and thousands of species in the galaxy that possessed the technology to use warp drive, no two were identical or even close enough to seem identical, until now. Something very wrong had happened here and it was her job to determine what it had been. There were a number of scenarios of course. Someone had provided them with the technology, being the most apparent. But Sara was a believer that the most readily arrived at conclusion was not always the correct one. She held other suspicions, although at present she had no proof to support them. She signed off on the report and placed it into the small holder slot located on the side of her chair, with only eight total crew, the Bohrs didn't have any administrative personnel to handle things like paperwork or other administrative tasks. The team consisted of one combination helmsman/Operations officer, one Tactical/security officer, One doctor, Two engineers, The CO and three scientists. It was a small specialized crew, The sort that was used to short three to six month operational missions usually to collect data on some newly discovered planet somewhere. It wasn't a tough job, although the single deck Mission scout vessel sometimes seemed smaller than it actually was when they had been out for a while. Their resident Social scientist and their Cultural and lingual specialist, stood at the back of the small bridge running radio wave signals received through the ship's computer. They had refined the translator matrix to a very fine point as well as put together a very fractured society for the Irlixians. Four major powers in some sort of cold war stand-off was never a good thing, especially when the largest of these powers seemed to be the only one that possessed federation level starship capabilities. Sarah shook her head just thinking about it, there was very little balance of power and if it wasn't for the fact that all four of the major powers seemed to have acquired or developed massive city sized defense shields the military advantage may well have exploded into complete warfare. As it was, the Irlixians phaser type technology wasn't very powerful, and the shield technology was strong enough to make any significant attacks almost pointless. "Captain, the two Irlixian ships have changed their heading and speed they are approaching our position." Ensign Hevax stated. Sara looked up at the Andorian helmsman and then allowed her eyes to settle on the main view screen. There framed in perfect digital imaging were two fairly large Irlixian starships, similar in basic design to a federation vessel although different enough to show they were not completely federation in design. They had changed their heading as indicated and were now bearing towards the Bohrs at nearly full impulse. "How's the cloaking device holding up?" She asked casually. Hevax tapped out some commands on his console before answering. "All cloaking systems are operating at maximum efficiency, captain. There's no way that they can see us." She nodded. Lieutenant Boranma had been begging for an opportunity to get some very close detailed scans of the ship's systems since they'd arrived over a month ago. It seemed that now, the Bohrs may actually get their chance without need to worry about getting any closer. The Irlixians course would take them right past the Bohrs close enough to get a very detailed passive scan on them. There wouldn't be such a good opportunity to conduct these scans again. "Mister Hevax, hold station. Keep us clear of their path be prepared to leave quickly should there be a need to do so. I want to get an up-close and personal look at these ships." "Aye captain." Hevax replied. Brightman tapped her commbadge. "Bridge to Boranma." =^=Boranma, here captain go ahead.=^= came the reply. "Looks like we're going to get our opportunity to conduct that scan you've been begging for lieutenant. The Irlixian ships have altered course which is going to take them right past our position." =^= that's great news Captain. I'll get ready to do the scans. I'll get all sorts of good data.=^= "Very good Lieutenant, Brightman out." Sara was smiling as she closed the channel. Things had been quiet since they had started their survey and now they'd have the chance to get some very high quality data. It was a contagious excitement that would quickly spread it's way through the small ship as everyone's attention would turn to the two ships approaching their rough coordinates. Even at full impulse the Irlixian ship's had taken nearly ten minute to enter passive scanning range. The ship's were easily big enough to rival an Akira class vessel. They were squat, flat affairs with a slightly boxy look as opposed to the more sleek federation design. A pair of sleek looking warp nacelles with triangular housings stuck unceremoniously out of the side of the ship. The carried phasers, which weren't nearly as powerful as they should be for a ship of that size. Their shields however were another matter entirely. The Passive scans started returning all sorts of data, architectural design specs, power systems, offensive and defensive systems, environmental systems. It was a veritable bonanza of data, that until now, the Bohrs had been unable to gather. A little over three thousand kilometers away from the small ship, the two massive cruisers moved slowly past the Mission scout. Then suddenly the alarms went off. All of them! "Report!" Sara demanded as she began to type frantically trying to get a detailed report to come up on her screen. "The cloak!" Hevax cried in surprise, "It's shut down!" What?!" The captain called out. ~Oh god~, "Get us out of here mister Hevax, now!" The Andorian frantically tapped out the commands on his console as the ship rocked from a sudden weapons discharge from one of the alien ships. The Bohrs surged forward and then suddenly lost all forward momentum. "All warp and impulse engines are off line!" he reported a sort of panic in his voice. Sarah slapped her commbadge hard enough to sting her chest, "Engineering what's going on, back there?" she asked frantically. =^=It's some sort of computer virus, it's shutting down key systems. Gaining access to our computer core, overriding the control sequences!=^= came the worried frantic replies. "Well fix it Lieutenant!" Sara snapped, her concern clearly caught in her voice. =^= I'm working on it. It's...=^= Suddenly the channel went dead and the main view screen activated. Sara's head snapped up and she made a sound of surprise at what she saw there. An Irlixian male, middle aged, wearing the uniform of the Rhone Union dominated the screen. =^=Alien commander. Surrender your vessel and prepare to be boarded or you will be destroyed!=^= he barked, his deep blue eyes were cold and hard. =^=reply.=^= Sara glanced around her bridge catching sight of her own worries mirrored there. They were in a bad spot and they had no way to escape at the moment. If they resisted, they'd be killed perhaps she could at least save her crew. "We surrender." She said as she turned back towards the view screen. =^= We will be boarding you shortly.=^= The male stated, =^=if you resist us, you will die.=^= The screen went blank. Sara turned to her tactical officer, "Can we get a signal out?" "No captain," Revan replied, " the communications are off-line." Sarah furrowed her brow and then asked, "What about the ship's buoy?" she asked after a moment. Revan looked up at her, "It should work. It's on an independent system." He replied simply, "but we don't have much time." Sara nodded and walked over to her command chair, "patch me into the buoy." she commanded. "Patched in, sir." She took a deep breath. "Attention any federation vessel, this is the USS Bohrs on mission in the Irlix system. We have experienced some sort of cyber attack upon our systems which have left us helpless. We are now being boarded by the Irlixian military. We require immediate assistance. We have a crew of eight, repeat eight that require immediate aid. Captain Brightman of the Bohrs out." She quickly set the message to start repeating after a few hours of travel, then set it's launch vector to head back towards Geneva Station, the closest Federation outpost to this sector now that it had returned from wherever it had gone. "Launch the buoy." she commanded and settled into her chair to await the boarding parties. "Buoy away captain." "Let's hope someone finds it soon." she said, "for all our sakes." (reply none) Daniel Greene ===================================================================== (USS Rosenante, Ready Room, CO-Capt- Ahmed Ibn Salid & FO Cmdr Jennifer Caskie- Day 3- 0800) The last month had proven interesting. With some limited retraining and upgrades the crew of the Rosenante had found themselves busy getting caught up to the world that they had returned to five years into the future. New crew had come aboard and old crew had been transferred off. Some had retired or resigned their commissions in order to be with their families, there had been a lot of that lately. Josh juggled both the PADDS she was carrying, not because they were a problem, but simply because she was nervous. She was not looking forward to the next fifteen minutes or so. But there was no getting round it so, finally, she pressed the chime. As per usual the door immediately slid open and Josh, hesitating for only a moment, stepped over the threshold. She could see the Captain, sitting at his desk as per usual and finally looking up and smiling at her. She kept her own face neutral as she walked towards his desk. Stopping in front of the desk she finally gave him a half hearted smile and began to speak. "Captain, I have two resignations from the Fleet here." She placed one of the PADDS on his desk and took a deep breath. "It does pain me greatly to tell you that this one is mine Sir." Ahmed looked up at his first officer, the smile that had been on his lips a moment earlier, now fading into a single drawn line on his face. "Resignations?" He asked, still trying to grasp the situation that had suddenly presented itself. "Might I ask why?" he added, then gestured for her to have a seat. Josh breathed out a long sigh and sat down in the chair in front of the desk. "I am sorry Sir, but my son is missing. I know it has now been five years, I understand that and I know that my family have given up all hope, but given what happened to my husband do you honest believe that I would simply abandon my son now and stop looking. I can't and I won't. I cannot afford to make that same mistake again, no matter how silly it seems. I will keep looking for Iain for as long as it takes." Ahmed nodded. "Commander, I've never considered looking after family as silly. If you are certain that this is what you need to do, then I'm behind you all the way. I only wish I could do more for you." Josh then slid the second PADD across the table to the Captain. "This is Head Nurse Fisher's resignation too. I am truly sorry Sir she insists on accompanying me. She will not take no for an answer, believe me I have tried to talk her out of coming, but you know Kitty. Once she digs her teeth into something she is determined." Ahmed gave her a weak smile. "I understand completely. In fact once you told me that one of the resignations was yours I could have made a fortune predicting that Kitty's would have been the second one." He stated. Josh grinned at him and shook her head. "Not against me you wouldn't. And I'm pretty sure there would have been a whole load of people in Sickbay who would have been more than happy to cover that bet." "Jennifer, I..." He began, then took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "I've never told you how much you've helped me. I don't think I would have been able to move forward and mature as a captain without your help. I owe you a great deal, and so does the crew." "I want to be certain that you understand, that if there is any way that I can aid you, ever in the future, I would gladly do so. You are more than my first officer... you are my friend and I will always be here for you." Jennifer smiled up at him. "Thank you Ahmed, I appreciate that more than I can probably say. It has been a pleasure, no, in fact it has been a privilege to serve you and the Rose as the CMO and then as First Officer and I will always cherish the time I spent here. You have taught me so much and so has this crew. I honestly see this as a learning process on all sides and one that I have been privileged to be a part of." Ahmed reached down lifted the first resignation and gave it a quick review. Seeing that everything was in order, he did the one thing that he had hoped he'd never have to do: he approved the request. He then repeated the process for Fisher. "Jennifer, It has been my honor serving with you. I want to leave you with one last order, and that is, to take care of yourself and come back to us someday." Jennifer picked up both of the PADDS and grinned at him. "Well, as to that Ahmed, I will certainly try my hardest. I do plan to come back, however I do not plan to come back without Iain. I made that mistake the last time, I most certain don't intend to repeat it this time. "I'll notify Geneva Station of your discharged status, and see to it that all your service credits are immediately transferred to private accounts. You'll need the money for a ship and supplies. Also I'll authorize you any supplies that we hold in ship's stores to be drawn out for your use." He stood then, suddenly resolved to the decision that he had made. He thrust out his right hand. "Good luck Jennifer, and remember that if you need anything at all, you can call on me and the Rosenante as long as I command her." Josh took his hand in hers and smiled sadly at him. "Thank you Sir, what can I say other than I will miss you more than I can say." They shook hands for a moment, and then in an uncharacteristic act, Ahmed pulled her close, hugged her and kissed her cheek. "I'll miss you." Josh felt Ahmed's arms encircle her and she smiled and hugged him back and kissed him on his cheek. Stepping back she saluted him one final time. "It has been an honor Sir. I will miss you too. She walked back to the door with a heavy heart and as she reached it she stopped, turned and smiled. "Ma'a as-Salaama Ahmed. Goodbye Ahmed." With a heavy heart she bowed one final time. "May God keep you safe. Inshahalla." The door opened one final time and for the last time Josh exited the CO's office Taking a deep breath she squared her shoulders and went to meet Kitty. She had a lot to do. (posted by Marilyn and Daniel) Daniel Greene ===================================================================== (USS Rosenante, Bridge, CO-Capt- Ahmed Ibn Salid Day 5- 1150) Ahmed sat in the center chair of the Rosenante's bridge as his crew and officers worked around him in a steady productive drone. Since commander Caskie's unexpected departure, there had been a few changes to the crew. First among those had been Commander Sullivan's promotion to acting first officer, which in turn had entailed the combination of the tactical and Security Departments under the leadership of Lieutenant Raschen. The position of ship's second officer remained vacant for the moment, as BUPERS had neglected to approve any positional changes based upon his recommendations. After their short stay at Geneva station, where the crew underwent some minor retraining to bring them up to speed on the latest procedures and techniques, The Rosenante had been assigned to do some honest-to-goodness exploration in the beta Quadrant. So far they had managed to discover two dark dust clouds, three new binary type a pairs and a wolf-Rayet quasar. They were currently monitoring the latter discovery, collecting data that would keep the science team busy for months when Lieutenant Dralar turned and regarded him for a moment. "Captain, I am receiving a long distance subspace message from Starfleet command." Ahmed looked up, "Put it on screen Lieutenant." He replied as he handed the PADD off to one of the bridge specialists. The image of the stellar quasar was replaced a moment later by a Starfleet admiral that Ahmed had only seen once before. Admiral S'Tor had made admiral during the time that the Rosenante had been missing. Still the Vulcan looked calm and collected and his short black hair framed his very Vulcan features perfectly. "Good evening Admiral." Ahmed began, "What can I do for you?" S'Tor regarded the captain of the Rosenante for a moment before responding in a flat Vulcan monotone that was almost painful to listen to. =^= Captain Salid, I have a mission of great importance for your ship.=^= The admiral replied, "I see admiral, what are the details?" =^= a Mission scout vessel the USS Bohrs has sent a distress signal by way of her ship's buoy captain. The warp signatures are remarkably similar to those employed by the united federation of Planets.=^= Ahmed nodded, so far he was understanding why a federation vessel might be deployed for such a mission. "What was the nature of the distress signal that Bohrs sent then admiral?" he asked. The Vulcan leaned forward and steepled his fingers before him before replying. =^= The Bohrs reported some sort of computer attack that disabled a significant number of the ship's systems, including her cloaking device. She was detected by the Irlixian Military belonging to a faction calling itself the Rhone Union. We believe that they boarded the vessel, captured the crew and seized the ship.=^= "I understand Admiral." Ahmed replied. =^= Recover the ship and her crew. If you are unable to recover the ship see to it that it is destroyed. If you have the opportunity to do some study to indicate the reasons that the Irlixians have such advanced technology so similar to federation manufacture, take it. However, time is of the essence and the crew of that ship comes first.=^= Ahmed nodded. "We'll get it done admiral. You can count on us." The Vulcan raised a single eyebrow before replying, =^=The data shows that you will most likely succeed Captain, which is why you were selected for this mission. That coupled with the fact that you are the closest ship make you the ideal candidate. Admiral S'Tor out.=^= The screen went back to the image of the Quasar and Ahmed reached down and pressed his intercom button on his command interface. "gather all the available data that would have been downloaded from the buoy. I want you ready to provide a senior staff briefing in the morning at 0900 hours. The Rose's crew had been updating their grasp of the political and historical changes occuring over the last five years. TOm shook his head and thought ~ So much has happened - we were not a aprt of it~ he mused. He curesed silently to himself about being cheated out of those years. He manned Main OPS on the bridge and dived into the myriad of readings, reports and the such that the position involved. Jackson thought about some changes the Captain had provisionally made - Lt Cmdr Sullivan was acting first officer and Chance took over the Tactical and Security sections. Luis Rosita's words came back to him - like a ghost haunting g a wretched soul. The SFI operative had told Tom jackson he was not a leader and was always to be a follower. Normally criticsim of his service didn't really bother him as he knew he always tried to do his best. But lately he had been experiencing a bout of self-doubt. Was the SFI goon correct? This thought plauged Tom a lot. Logically, if he were a follower type, he hoped the CO would have counseld him - nothing really had occured along that line as yet. The changes in technology, while numerous, weren't too difficult to absorb. The ship was soon in sensor range of SB Geneva and he felt a warm glow for his 'home'. In some ways, the medical department was the hardest hit by the Cronus shift. Almost weekly, there were new procedures and techniques, medicines and equipment that one had to be educated and certified in. Doing this, took considerably more time then say replacing a warp coil. Kimiko closed the file and forwarded it to the FO and Medical division officer. She dreaded looking at the schedule and huge gap left by Nurse Fisher, she knew that she would miss her quiet support. At least as routine as summarizing and resubmitting yearly reports that technically had been submitted just a couple of months prior. What she really wanted to do was finish reading the rest of the material and structural research that had occured in recent years. But that would have to wait along with catching up on the rest of what her family had been up to. There were several new cousins and 2 new brothers and countless other updates that were still coming in. It entertained her to consider that it would take her longer to catch up with the family then it would to take in all of the technical advances she'd missed. Perhaps she could get with Lieutenant Matrix and see if he'd made any wonderous discoveries. She didn't have any doubt that he'd be just as curious about such things as she was. As she mulled over the options before sending off the final report the intercom interrupted her. =/\=Attention all hands this is the captain speaking. All personnel are to make immediate preparations for rescue operations. All department heads are to immediately report their departmental status to the bridge. With the go over every system had it would have been nearly impossible for the department to be less. The voice of the captain broke out behind him. "All department heads are to immediately report their departmental status to the bridge. Captain out." Louis had no doubt it would be answered so he continued his work cataloguing the data on the interstellar phenomena they had discovered recently. "Mister Dralar, set course for the Irlix system and engage the Spiral drive. What is our ETA?" That was curious so he kept an ear on what was happening. "Thirty-six hours Captain." The Skorr Helmsman replied. "Understood. Drop us out of the conduit two hours prior to arrival, we'll enter the system under cloak." "Aye captain." The Captain then issued orders to the Vulcan FO. "gather all the available data that would have been downloaded from the buoy. I want you ready to provide a senior staff briefing in the morning at 0900 hours. Have someone from medical put together a physiological report on the Irlixians, and have engineering start pouring over any technical data that we have available on both the Irlixian ships as well as the Bohrs." "Understood." Was the reply. "One last thing, Commander, have Mister Maddox and Mister Remey start a detailed sociological study of the Irlixians using whatever data might be available. Reports and paperwork were part of the job of being a ship's captain. It seemed that in order to achieve that position, where you could explore and defend as you felt necessary, you had to master the bloody paperwork as well. The doors to the Observation lounge slipped open and Ahmed noted some of his senior officers arriving in preparation for the reports and briefs that were coming their way. For his part in things, he had reviewed the Champlain's logs from the first encounter in the Irlixian system. While Commander Sullivan had at first thought that he had been present, when in fact he had not joined the ship until after the incident, There was still a great deal that he could surmise from the original reports as well as from the newest data contained in the Bohr's Buoy. He glanced up and noticed his old friend and colleague Tom Jackson move over to one of the portals and glance out at the stars as they spiraled around the ship. The streaking stars making that particular motion was a result of the nearly invisible conduit generated by the Spiral Geometry Warp Drive. The field caused the light from outside the conduit to warp and twist around the outermost edges of the field. It had been this constant spiraling visual affect that had given the system it's unique name. There was something surreal and beautiful about it, something almost supernatural or divine in a manner of speaking. It was relaxing and because they didn't use the drive often because of the affects of continual use, it was even more enticing to take a look whenever you could. Ahmed had even heard of spiral parties being held in Trade Winds for the crew during times when the drive was being employed. And now that they actually had a bartender and manager for the place, Trade Winds seemed to finally transform into a social hub of the ship as was intended. The captain still wasn't entirely certain how he felt about having an ex-Romulan from the mirror universe on his ship, but he was willing to trust chances judgment where she was concerned. After all if he couldn't trust his Chief of Security and Chief of Tactical, who could he trust? As the Officers filtered into the room, he made note of how young they all were. He wasn't too much older than most of them, yet only a few of them had seen the sort of things that aged you prematurely. Sullivan, Raschen, Jackson, Matrix; these were the officers that had served in the civil war. The others had seen some very limited action or had graduated from the academy as the war drew to an end. It was these officers that he considered the younger members of the ship's crew although they really weren't too much younger if at all than the captain himself. People made their way to the replicators, settled themselves and made a little small talk. Even Jackson eventually returned to his seat. The crew sitting before him were experienced, skilled and dedicated. Regardless of their age, they always got the job done. As the last of them settled into their places, Ahmed glanced over to his right, the position which, until just recently, had been occupied by Jennifer Caskie. Her presence was missed, and despite the fact that Sullivan was a capable and skilled officer, Ahmed missed her. He smiled at his acting first officer, nodded towards the chronometer which just flipped over to 0900 hours and smiled. It was time to have Sullivan conduct her first briefing as First officer. Tom was starring out at the stars as they spiraled around the ship; looking as if contemplating the universe. “How are we doing this morning?” Raschen asked to no one in particular. After depositing the padd on the table he took the seat and waited for the others to arrive. When the commander entered he gave her a welcoming nod. (Reply any present) Once the meeting started he listened intently. "Four days ago just after oh eight hundred star time the USS Bohrs came under attack in the Irlix System. This attack was so quick, decisive and crippling in nature that all they were able to do in response was jettison their log buoy. As until six years ago Star Fleet considered the Irlix System inhabited by a pre-warp industrial to information age society. That theory was proved in error when long range sensors from one ship in the 52nd fleet the USS Champlain detected a Starfleet warp signature. The Rosenante was sent to investigate. The civil war had delayed first contact and until the resources were available to dispatch a dedicated first contact vessel, Star Fleet sent a small manned scout ship with a cloaking device to keep tabs on them. That vessel was the USS Bohrs. I sent the logs and sensor data from both vessels to our subject matter experts here on the Rosenante for their analysis and recommendations. I will start with science, for their sociological findings." Louis took a deep breath then stood to his feet. "The Irlixians have some striking visual characteristics which I won't get into now and their home planet is class M. Their technological development was last classified as being similar to Earth's in the mid twenty first century with a corresponding computer development. Bizarrely they are reported as possessing warp drive as the commander stated which is beyond that reported state of development and how they acquired that technology is unknown. Obviously they either had either a branch of their sciences which took a quantum leap beyond most of their capabilities or acquired the technology from another civilization. It is possible both of those possibilities are interrelated." "At last contact the Irlixians were divided into four governmental entities based on each goverments control of one of its four major continents which are the United Confederation of Irlix, The Rhone Union, The Banok Empire and the Nuverick Empire. Having no unified planetary goverment obviously leads to tensions between those governing entities. Our information however is considerably out of date and it is likely there may have been some changes since the planet was last visited. There are a lot of blanks in our knowledge which we will hopefully be able to fill in during our current mission." After speaking he returned to his seat and listened to the other reports. She had seen the table before, but never took the time to really look at it. She also noticed her burgundy collar, and remembering seeing her comrades go before her, changing the inner shirt of their uniform. Frasier, Janeway, and more recently Caskie. She found that she did that more now, with her second chance at life. As she was just about to take her new seat, to one side of the Captain, she paused. As if sitting down this time, in this chair had significant meaning, and to everyone in the room, including Sullivan, it did. LCDR Sullivan stated. “Well ma’am; after reviewing the logs from the Chaplain, it is my professional opinion that a vessel like the Bohrs had absolutely no business being there.” Raschen started. (Reply any) Chance called up a pair of holo-images of 2 different Irlixian warships to be displayed over the table, one from the Chaplain logs and the other from the Bohrs’.  Pointing at each image in turn, he explained “These images were captured several years apart; the first is from the Chaplain during our Civil War, and the second from the Bohrs three days ago. “Judging from the way the basic ship’s structure is laid out; it lends itself to the idea that the Irlixiana view travels through space much like over the sea.  At a glance each ship roughly resembles a 100 to 200 meter long, triple hull Catamaran; with the Warp Nacelle(s) running down the length of the ship taking the place of the center hull. “Also from the logs I was able to ascertain that the weapons on the Irlixian vessels are not placed like most modern warships, but more like tall-ships where the cannons were placed down the length of the ship, hence the term ‘broadside’. “The outer two hulls house the phaser emitters.  The smaller one fired 7 phasers off one broadside. Taking into account the symmetry of the vessel; I concluded that this is a 16 ‘gun’ ship, were the larger one is closer to 24.  The 2 outer hulls also provide additional protection to the warp-drive. “On the bow of the ship appears to be a 21st Century Rail-Gun.” (Reply any iyw) “The Rail-Gun was supposedly capable of launching a projectile up to 300 kilometers with pinpoint accuracy along the Earth’s surface.  In space, at least in theory, it could work.” “However, despite being compact with relatively weak offensive weapons, these ships are fast, maneuverable, and very well shielded.  These things could have destroyed the Bohrs by ramming her and it would have felt like a speed bump.” (Reply any iyw) “Militarily; it appears that one government is beginning to adopt the ‘There’s no Defense like a good Offense’ philosophy.  Beyond that I can only speculate, but I know what my gut tells me.  Upgrade the phasers and replace the Rail-Gun with torpedo launchers and those ships would make damn good attack craft.  Any questions” (Reply any iyw) (Reply Sullivan, any iyw) Charlie Raschen --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante – Conference Room – Chief OPS – LT Tom Jackson Day 6 0856) Tom arrived a tad early. He had much on his mind and wanted a bit of quiet before the mission brief began. He laid his items on the conference room table and walked to one of the portals and looked out. The calming aspect of space's vastness always helped settle his mind. The standard exploration mission they had started on had turned into a rescue mission. Tom;s 'sixth sense' was tingling. Jackson ansently sipped on his strong, dark coffee. He had had less toget ready for the meeting than some of the others. He had worked with medical and made sure they had current medications and supplies. Engineering had been in a good state. Steve Martix, Ensign Rixx and company had absorbed five years of technology enhacments and changes. In fact all their departments had gone back to 'school' and had played catch up. The changes ship wise had been impressive but then the Rose's crew was the best ship in any time frame. Tom Jackson was proud to be a part of such skillful personnel. He further reflected on the growth of several of them - Martena Rixx, Sam Lopez and Kimiko Ichijo had all grown tremendously since their arrivals on the Rose. That thought cause Tom once a gain to think about himself. Had he grown? he wondered about that a lot lately. The younger officers (not really that much younger than Tom) were very quick studies. ~They are good to keep an old man like me hopping~ Tom laughed to hmself. Khoda Rhone, the very being for whom the city and in fact the entire Rhone union was named was an older man, nearing his late fifties. His once striking deep earth brown hair had turned to more of a dun tan over the years, and his eyes had taken on a distant look that marked his constant planning and scheming. He was the supreme power over a portion of the planet that easily encompassed the better half of the planet. His word was law and the fact that he and he alone completely understood the alien technology that had brought about his rise to the upper echelons of power on the planet was a testament to his intellect and his importance. He was standing now, in front of the massive clear aluminum windows that afforded him an amazing view of his capital city. It's inhabitants were busily going about their business, developing the technology that would allow a more widespread introduction of the captured alien technology into the private sector. Already, he had established deep soil facilities where matter/antimatter reactors generated massive amounts of power to provide clean energy to the cities of his union. The introduction of centralized community Replicators made food widespread for anyone and everyone that needed it. No citizen would go without. They all received an allotment of replicator ration chips that would allow them to have anything they desired replicated. It was a crude way to do things, but with three or four such Replication centers in every major city, they could at least assist the populace to get the basic supplies that they needed. Of course the public facilities were massive. The Irlixians had not managed to develop the technology on a scale small enough to put them in every building, instead they had been forced to build the massive buildings as the drive fro the appropriate miniaturization technologies moved forward. The sun was high in the sky and rapidly approaching mid day. The antigravity sleds of the military and the government could be seen slipping past the ground based transportation used by the general population. Khoda smiled, at seeing how far the technology that he had provided to the people of this planet had been adapted and at how well it had been employed. He turned away from the windows looking back into his office. It was the most technologically advanced building in the entire Union. Components of the original alien starship's master computer were active here. Their database, technical schematics and a few other personal luxuries, such as the sonic shower and a personal replicator recovered from one of the personal quarters of that vessel were installed here. A few surprisingly resilient LCARS display monitors were aligned against one wall. Some had been stripped from the ship's main engineering center, a few from it's bridge and sciences area. Even Khoda was surprised to see that they had survived the crash all those years ago. He stepped over to the pedestals that he kept in his office. They were used to display certain objects that had come from the original ship. There was a Mark II Medical tricorder and an air hypo, both of which had revolutionized Medical treatment in the Union. The two pieces sat side by side on a single pedestal closest to the doors. His vision moved onwards, sliding forward towards the next pedestal which displayed a group of six commbadges. They were disabled of course, but the technology in them had been used to make the military and police communications more secure and capable. The universal translator had aided in interrogations of enemy spies as well. So even that technology had proven useful. The third pedestal and the once closest to his desk held a Type II hand phaser as well as a few very potent power packs for them. While he had not managed to reproduce the phaser as accurately as he'd liked, he had managed to produce a close enough semblance of them to arm his military with the weapons as well as provide the law enforcement officers of the Union with a version that could stun criminals. Their introduction had guaranteed that the Rhone Union would remain the most powerful power on the planet. The last pedestal held a PADD. While it didn't seem as amazing as some of the other artifacts stored here, it was by far the single most influential piece of technology around. It had been surprisingly easy to reproduce with the limited technology that the Irlixians had available to them at the time. The research and technology had been instrumental in revolutionizing the computers that ran the union. For the spread of information and for the computers that had become the economic and scientific backbone of the Union's total strength. Each of these pedestals were protected by a small personal force field, another piece of technology that he had managed to adapt. Larger versions of that very same force field was capable of being raised in a second around every major city and military facility in the Union. Mobile versions protected their three starships, as well as their fighter aircraft, ships at sea and tanks on the battlefield. It was only a matter of time before they completed the annexation of the other three powers on the planet, and then he would be the sole ruler of the entire planet. The great unifier. There was a soft chime from the door of his office and Rhone turned to regard it for a moment. He wore the normal Black and silver uniform of the military of the Rhone Union. The single daily uniform was very reminiscent of those found on the bodies of the aliens recovered from the ship. The black lower body of the one piece comprised the bulk of the uniform. The upper portion was a silvery metal color. At the collars were rank pins, or pips that were easily recognizable by any federation officer, since they mimicked theirs exactly. A braid of color at left sleeve denoted function; Maroon for Commanders, Gold for Logistics and Engineers, Blue for medical Doctors and Scientists, and Green for Soldiers. It had been a very easy thing to adopt, especially after the conflicts that had raged immediately after the alien ship had crashed. Rhone had seen the alien ship fall from the sky, and he knew then, that he would have to do something drastic to insure that the people of this world survived such an unexpected event. Another chime of the door sounded and Khoda snapped back into the present. No doubt the alien commander was here along with her military escort. "Enter" he called out and made his way over to the massive hard wood desk that dominated his office. The door slid aside, revealing the Captain of the Bohrs as well as a small group of RU soldiers from the Elite Division. Their commander Sevrith Novas, the head of the unit was in attendance as well. "The alien Captain is here, Supreme Commander," Sevrith stated matter of factly. "Her name is Sara Brightman." Khoda nodded, then motioned to her to sit. Brightman gave a look around the room, here eyes seeming to take in everything around her. They paused for a moment on the LCARS display as well as the artifacts that sat on the pedestals. NO doubt she had already noticed the phaser pistols carried by her escort. She took a deep breath and then made her way to the indicated chair. She sat down in it without a sound and then turned to regard the Irlixian sitting before her. "Commander..." She began. "Supreme Commander!" Sevrith barked. Sarah started and then began again, "Supreme Commander, It was not my intention of making first contact with your people in this matter. My apologies for this. I regret that the situation has come to this." "Captain Brightman." Khoda replied, "You're people were spying on our world. Using a cloaking device. You had no intention of making contact. You regret only that you were caught in the act, and now that you face punishment for doing so." Sara shook her head. "I disagree, it is normal for us to study a culture prior to making contact. We were not spying. We were preparing." Her voice was clear and concise. Her eyes however showed him the fear that she harbored. "Your vessel is a small one. As was it's crew. All of your people are specialists in either science or engineering. They are useful. However I do not see that you are useful to me. I do not need a Federation Captain attempting to lead them to recapture their ship and escape." Sarah's eyes grew larger. "Sir I respectfully request that you open a dialog with my government. They will see to it that myself and my people are removed from your planet. We could usher in a new era of peace between our peoples." Khoda smiled. "I am well aware that the United federation of planets does not make accords or agreements with planets who do not possess a single planetary government. And I also know that the reason that you are here is because of the federation style warp signature that was detected years ago, by another federation starship." Sarah just looked at him. "It will do you no good to deny it, Captain. I know more about your federation, your technology and your government than you could believe possible." "I also know that Starfleet Captains are completely responsible for the actions of their crew. Your ship has been captured while spying upon vessels of the military of the Rhone Union. The penalty of which is death. " Rhone looked up at Sevrith and nodded. The commander of the Elite unit drew his phaser. "I am sorry captain but there is more at stake here than you realize. I have a great personal stake in the well being of this world. I will see it unified and I will use the expertise of your crew and your technology to do it. You are not needed." Sarah started to rise, her sudden realization damning as she did so. The beam from Novas' phaser caught her in the small of the back and the energy began tearing apart her molecular structure. A cascade of power spread across her body, ripping her apart painfully until there was nothing left. Khoda looked up at Novas. "Have the crew of the Bohrs detained at the Seliya Facility. The federation starship's sensors should not be able to detect them there because of the Magnesite deposits. Then put the military on alert and remind the populace to report bizarre on unusual behavior to the authorities." "You are expecting another ship?" Novas asked. "Oh yes, most assuredly." Khoda replied. "But we knocked out their communications in the computer attack, the could not have managed a message." he argued. "Of that there is no doubt, but I just realized that they would most likely use their ship's buoy to convey the need for help. I should have remembered that when I came up with the plan." "Remembered?" Novas asked. "For the extensive studies I've done of federation starship designs." Khoda answered quickly. But it's too late for that now." "Now we begin our work of salvaging the Bohrs and implementing it's newer technology into the ships of the fleet. Be certain to isolate and disable the commbadges that they use on their uniform before you move them." He paused for a moment. "Their medical technology is very advanced. There is a slim chance that they may be able to make themselves look like us. Be prepared for that possibility." Sevrith nodded, then worked his jaw. "I will see to it personally." "Good, now go. I have many things to consider." Rhone stated. The Irlixians turned and left the room following their commander. Khoda regarded the spot where the captain had been took a deep breath and started crying. (reply none yet) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (U.S.S. Rosenante - COPS Quarters Deck Day 6 Lt Tom Jackson 1800) Tom had turned the running of OPS over to Ensign Robbie SMith and SCPO Phil Sheridan. The briefing was completed and everyone was working on their assignments. The fact that the Irlixian had warp capability similar to the Federation's caused Tom some concern. NRPG: I am taking a 'slight' liberty here - i will assume OPS was also sent the packet of information Sec/Tac and Medical got. If I am in the wrong I can easily fix RPG: Tom read over the data again. Something was nagging him. Who had visited the Irlixian race? And why was it not in the SF database? The only mention was from the USS Champlain's log entries. Tom was not the type to like loose ends. I continued his readin. He learned they were a sentient humanoid race with purplish skin, markings and small, residual antlers which protrude from their cheek bones. the antlers are similar in appearance to those of Terran Gazelles, although considerably smaller. ~Wow~ Jackson mused silently. The diversity of species and their physical make-ups never ceased to amze the Chief of Operations. He wondered what it had been like in the times of Captain Jonathon Archer and James T.. Kirk to encounter new races and technology. Tom was so thakful his mom and late dad J.D. had stressed the importance of researching the pasts and trying to apply lessons learned. Something wasn't right here. Tom felt this and was determined to find out what it was and to fix it. He really liked solving mysteries.
