Basil was mildy surprised, Eian didn’t seem to have the demeanour of an engineer. Then again Basil’s experience of engineers were confined mainly to freighters and Eian didn’t have the demeanour of any freighter crewmember basil had known. For a start they were actually talking rather than the usual brooding, drinking or fighting. Basil continued to ask Eian about how he became an enginnerr Eian smiled. "Well, that's an interesting story. I actually started off majoring in Tactical/Security at the Academy. I've always liked weapons construction, though, so I took some classes in weapons engineering. Then I ended up taking some time off halfway through the Academy, and I worked as a drydock mechanic for a year and a half. It counted toward an engineering degree, so I didn't have to take too many extra classes when I got back to the Academy. And that's what Starfleet needed when I graduated, so here I am." ~Ahh that makes a bit more sense~ Basil probed whether Eian was happy with his choice Eian shrugged. "You mean staying on as an engineer after my first promotion? Yeah, I think I did make the right choice. I like the Rosenante and I plan to stay on board at least until my next promotion...I've made something of a home there, for what little time I've been on board. I like my crewmates, I think the Captain is great." Basil checked the time, he needed to go. “Thank you Eian. Look I need to go, thanks for your time, its been a pleasure. Maybe we’ll meet again, take care” (Reply Eian, iyw but no need) (posted by Warren Simkins) ======================================================= (USS Boudicca - Ready Room - TAC/SC Lieutenant(SG) Detron Trei - 08.11) Detron heard the ruling given from Captain Durand that he will on a period of probation 6 months. He glared at the console smiling ever so sweetly at him [Please insert slide] A padd flew across the room and bounced off the wall. Narvak stormed over to the Padd and glared at the offending item, he would have felt better if the device had exploded into a million pieces, as it was, there was not a scratch. Life had not gone well for Narvak and it started before he was even born. He sighed and shook his head, his parents were rescued by Starfleet when their freighter had lost power and was left drifting. He could understand the gratitude, but to offer up their unborn son to Starfleet like some soft-headed religious zealot was going way too far. His mother always was always in the deep mud. So there he went, then at the academy, they had the audacity to tell him that Science was a better fit for him then engineering. Now look at him, stuck in a lab, repeating pointless scans on this night of great parties. Narvak sighed, picked up the padd and tossed it onto the table. To top it off, the jerk seemed to be doing me a favor “You could have ended up in front of the Captain on charges” The Tellerite mocked. “I don’t think so; the Captain doesn’t seem like a whiner” (Reply None) (Posted by Jack) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Boudicca - Corridor heading to sickbay - ACMO Basil Candle - Day 3, 01:34) The captain replied “There are several other things Doctor, but I only ask you handle those within your field. I’m certain you’ll more than have your hands full. Mob rule is spreading on the station Doctor... take no unnecessary risks, and make sure your people stick together. We’ll be sending more help your way as soon as we muster it.” “Acknowledged sir” and not longing to delay the Captain he signed off. ~Mob rule on a failing starbase? This sounds better and better~ --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Bridge, CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 3, 0216) “My operations officer tells me that they are working on that contingency now. I’ve also instructed the Chief Engineer to see about feeding power to the station through the umbilical system once the warp core is operational as we discussed earlier Captain.” "Very good. I received a report just a few minutes ago that our modifications to the umbilicus will be completed shortly. I have also had doctor Ru'at establish a medical station outside the docking arm just inside the promenade. Lieutenant Soma is providing security there. I thought it would make a good staging point. It is my intention to set up a mobile command center there. I'll be sending a number of spare commbadges there to allow those personnel who were not wearing theirs to get ready replacements." (reply Caskie, Durand iyw) The Boudicca's chief Engineer joined the channel advising that some data had been sent to the boudicca for acknowledgment. Captain Durand had the foresight to forward it on to the Rosenante as well. Ahmed stepped up to the science station where one of the junior officers was posted. =^=Captain Salid, this is Durand. Did you get the data packet we just sent you?=^= "We're looking at it presently, Captain." Ahmed replied, Then gave a glance to the science officer sitting at the console looking at the data. "It's most definitely a xenomorphic insectoid analog, sir. Looks as if it has adapted to inhabit space, very complex design, looks to be very resilient. This data isn't quite complete though, to really identify it, I'd need a specimen. I have roughly twenty-thousand similar species in the database, each that seems to have just slight variations." The officer reported. Ahmed nodded, "Do what you can I'll see about getting us a specimen." The captain then went back to the open commchannel. "Did you catch all of that Captain Durand, Commander Caskie?" (reply Durand, Caskie) NRPG: Of Course, there is a sample in O'Neill! I'll get him aboard ship and start surgery in just a little while. Ahmed turned back towards Jackson. "Mister Jackson, Issue a warning to all our personnel and have those with commbadges relay the message to all starfleet personnel. Also spread the word that spare commbadges are available at the emergency management station at the end of the Docking arm." (reply Jackson) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante Bridge - Docked SB 989 2O/COPS Lt Tom Jackson Day 3 0225) Thomas J. Jackson was whipped. The work had gone along unabated. around the clock This was another time where the dual warp cores where a blessing. The Rose, when docked, always kept a core in standby mode. reports from tehj Boudicca were encouraging. She was making progress. Jackson wanted a hot coffee and wanted it badly. Deciding they all could use food and drink, Tom signalled the mess hall asking for a lite round of food and drinks for the bridge. As the refreshments arrived and Tom signalled for the yeoman to offer the first choice to his dearest friend Ahmed Salid now his Commmander. (re[ly: Captain IYW) Captain Salid issued Tom additional orders by saying "Mister Jackson, Issue a warning to all our personnel and have those with commbadges relay the message to all starfleet personnel. Also spread the word that spare comm badges are available at the emergency management station at the end of the Docking arm." "Aye Aye Sir" Jackson replied crisply. Tom quickly typed a message and broadcast it to all ship's personnel, adding spare Comm badges were available as the Captain instructed. The warning concerning he possible cause of the current situation was also added. "The information has been sent out - I see an upsurge in the a mount of comm traffic as well sir" Jackson reported. (reply: Captain) "Jackson to Ensign Smith - come in" Tom sent. (ereply Robbie) "I order you to take a couple hours off. You've been at it for 20 plus hours - I need you rested. Understood Mr Smith?) I will stay back for the stand if it comes to that. You run interference between Saint Jean and my position as the situation progresses. Anything else you can add?" Trei asked him. "No sir, nothing other than that these people are scared for themselves and their families. They've all heard what happens when you lose life support and they're petrified by it. We just need to keep in mind that while they are a threat, that they are also just people." --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Sickbay - aFO Cmdr Josh Caskie - Day 3 - 0240) The nurse finally returned with the results of the blood work for Ensign Signos and Josh took a look at it. Frowning she turned to the nurse. "Ok start her on whatever broad spectrum antitoxin we have available and keep doing a fresh blood work analysis every half hour. Keep me informed." Just as the nurse turned away to comply with Josh's orders a young engineering crewman that she recognised from the Boudicca rushed into the bay and almost thrust a padd into her hands. "The report from Ensign Jacobs sir. I'm sorry I took so long to get here I had to make several detours to avoid the crowds and the fires." Josh took the padd and thanked him. "Understood and thank you. Please return to Ensign Jacobs and let him know that the Boudicca and the Rose will soon be not only transferring some power to the station through their warp cores via the umbilicals but are in the process of sending as much security, engineering and medical help as they can. I still don't have any updates on when, but hopefully soon." As soon as the crew member left Josh started scanning the information on the padd and immediately crossed back to her other patient to check on him. Now at least thanks to the padd she understood or at least thought she might understand pretty much what was wrong with him and also what had so severely compromised the station. She was just about to tap the comm badge she had appropriated from Lt Trei when a shout went up from the back of the bay. "Communications are up and running, at least partially I think." Making a beeline for the back of the bay Josh hit the panel and opened a channel. "Caskie here. I have two patients needing an immediate beam out to whatever ship can take them. One is suffering from a form of blood poisoning and has already had the first dose of broad spectrum antitoxin administered a few minutes ago. Given that we are still so short staffed down here she would be better off in one of the ship's sickbay than here since her blood work will need to be monitored every half hour and further doses of antitoxin administered as needed. The second patient is unconscious, suffering from odd fits and given the information that has just been relayed to me via a runner from Ensign Jacobs, I think he needs a full body image scan and possible surgery. Our imaging system is down until main power is up and running again and to be honest I would rather not perform surgery on him without a full scan since I cannot be one hundred percent sure about what is causing his problems." (Reply either ship) "Understood and standing by. The patients are located on biobeds 5 and 6. I will leave the padd regarding the patient on biobed six on his bed so that medical can review it. It might also be wise to send the information on this padd to both Captains. Ensign Jacobs may already have done so, but just in case he hasn't I am since I think it might have a bearing on what could possibly have caused the malfunction on the station. Caskie out." (Reply Bouddica and Rosenante) (Posted by Marilyn) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Sickbay - ATAC/SC Ensign(jg) Jessica Signos - Day 3 - 0244*) That's the problem with blood work it always takes time, and with the abnormality that runs though Jessica's veins, probably made it take all the longer, also not to mention a few raised eye brows of 'this can't be right.' During which time Jessica spent quite aware inside a body slowly shutting down. She knew enough about poisons, that the more consentrated and the small the victim did not bode well. There was activity around her even if she did not know what it was. That only served to confuse her all the more, has she tried to keep her mind calm. A nurse walked past, or what Jessica assumed was a nurse though half laden, foggy eyes. Handing a familiar face a PADD. ~Who is she?~ Jessica asked herself tiring to get her mind off her current predicament. But her body denied her the ability to contemplate it for long. She felt it, deep with in herself a heaviness, pushing down on her chest, a sadness in her heart has her breathing began to slow and her vitals dropped. A voice cut though the fog of her mind, even though who it belonged to would forever remain lost to her. "Get that damn antitoxin in her now! We're starting to lose her!" The person who spoke could of been right over her, but to Jessica the words seemed shouted from a far, has her world went black. She came back, from the darkness gasping for air, the pain on her chest while still there was lessened, and her head cleared a bit. She could still not move but her mind took comfort that someone, somewhere, had brought her back from the brink. It was the first positive thought she had since the dart had struck her. ~ I will make it.~ Has the darkness found her again. this time not one of death but of peaceful sleep. Hopefully I’ll see you there” Basil went to his office and looked at the starbase’s map, trying to organise a route through the corridors to the main sickbay. He could see his team milling outside his office, he left the room and he addressed his team “Okay everyone, simple rule, stay together, keep in visual contact at all times. The plan is to reach the main sickbay and support those within.” With that Basil turned to lead the way through the ship to head to the Starbase. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Main Sickbay, Doctor Emily Post, Day 3 0250) With the CMO, ACMO and the remaining Senior Doctor on the ship on the Starbase, Emily had inherited the position of 'Senior-most Medical Person responsible for all sorts of things during a crisis.' They had started taking in some of the more serious casualties that had been found on the station, and the entire Medical Staff of the Rosenante, at least those that were aboard ship were packed into the two sickbays handling medical supply logistics, handling triage and dealing with imaging and tests as needed. Doctor Ru'al had established a complete mobile Medical station on the Starbase, near the docking arm, so that she could triage personnel, and stay close enough to the ship to either withdraw from the starbase or have the aid of additional security as needed. Doctor Ichijo had gone to aid Josh on the Starbase, while nothing had been heard from Doctor Lopez since the incident had begun. No one knew if he was alive or dead, but she certainly hoped that he was just out of contact and not injured or dead somewhere. Despite his brusk manner, Emily liked him well enough and supposed that he was a good person under his hard professional exterior. =^=Caskie here.=^= The sound of the commander's voice brought Emily back to the here-and-now. =^=I have two patients needing an immediate beam out to whatever ship can take them. "Doctor Post on the Rosenante here, commander. We can take them both. I have available bed space and a staff ready to get to immediate care. We will commence transport shortly." (reply Caskie iyw) Emily dropped the information to Dawson in the transporter room and received an immediate reply. She assigned the two new arrival patients to biobeds seven and eight, and then told Dawson to initiate transport as soon as he was able. She didn't have to wait very long before the sound of the transporters filled the room and both the patients were laying on their assigned biobeds, with their PADD containing their medical data waiting for the attending nurses. You'd have thought that triage and trauma nurses were in some way related to Earth Piranha, with the way that they surged forward to start handling things. This effect was a direct result of the readiness training that Caskie had put forward during her tenure as CMO of the Rosenante. Doctors Ichijo and Lopez had maintained the training and readiness, which meant that the Sickbay was running like a thoroughbred in the last stretch of the Derby. Emily stepped forward and was handed the first of the PADDs. The name on it read Signos, Jessica. She was a member of the Boudicca crew. A quick glance at the data provided showed that she had been affected by some sort of neuropoison, which had as of yet, been identified. "Get this woman a complete biochem work up now. I need to know what toxin is causing her stress, so that we can neutralize it. in the meantime judging by her vitals, we need to give her another dose. Give her 50-mg Isodorine followed by a bag of Sebdurin-F on continual drip." "Yes Doctor." One of the nurses replied. "I want to see those results as soon as they are back from the lab." Another yes doctor followed and Emily moved forward to the man that was laying in biobed eight. She recognized him as Lieutenant O'Neill from Engineering. She grabbed his PADD and gave it a quick glance, and then accessed his Medical history. It became readily apparent that there was a chemical reaction between his medication and some biochemical that was coursing through his veins. His Vitals indicated some brain swelling and potential brain trauma. "I want Mister O'Neill in Imaging stat. Give him the full spectrum of images, focusing on his cranium and upper body." Two nurses muscles Eian onto an antigrav gurney and took him to Imaging almost immediately. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Bridge, CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 3, 0253) =^=Captain Salid, this is Durand. I’m pleased to report that the USS Boudicca is a going proposition again.=^= Ahmed smiled at the message. "Excellent news, captain. I am pleased to report that we have 20% of the starbase powered, with a focus on Life Support and station keeping. Also I am showing that we have roughly 45% of communications back on-line and running through our relay." (reply Durand, Jackson, Caskie iyw, Any) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989 - Main Engineering - ACEO Ensign(jg) Henry Jacobs - 0258*) Jacobs had spent the last 15 minutes unlocking the stations reactor with the information he received from the Rosenante. It was clear that Lieutenant O'Neill had a genius mind and it even made Jacobs a little peeved that he had not had the understanding to unlock the reactor on his own. Jacobs began to hear the bulkheads buckling as the creatures continued to eat all around him. Two of the damage team members returned to the console that Jacobs was working at in order to render some assistance. "First thing guys we need to set up force fields to prevent contact with the creatures. I am just getting power back up in here from the reactor, soon as i am finished we can set up actual force fields. Temporary ones will have to do with the help of the portable generators." The other two men grabbed portable generators and moved to opposite ends of engineering to set up the force fields while Jacobs continued to enter commands into the one working console in Main Engineering. After several key strokes the console across the room lit up with power. ~Good there is the power distribution terminal. Next should be..~ Before he could finish the thought the two consoles to his left illuminated to his delight. ~And there goes matter and anti-matter control along with the core regulation terminal~ Power seemed to be returning to Main Engineering but the issue was now how to return power to the rest of the station. Near the engineering entrance was a station readout display, Henry noticed power moving from the Boudicca through the umbilicas. It seemed the Boudicca had the warp core back online and was trying to lend some power to the station. Jacobs and the damage control team began to repair what they could with what they had. The job was too much for this small group to handle; hopefully help would be coming. (Reply ANY) (Posted by Darryl) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989, Main Engineering, SO, Ensign Tyrone Cooper, Day 3, 0300) Tyrone had been trapped in the holodeck where one moment he had been hiking in the Swiss Alps, and the next he was standing in the center of a no-longer functioning holodeck. It had been only fortune that a small group of starfleet personnel from the station had opened the doors and allowed him to escape the deck. He had discovered that there were three engineers, four security officers and an operations officer in the group. They had all been off duty in an adjacent holodeck, but between them had managed to muscle the doors open, a task that had been well beyond the singular strength of body that Tyrone could bring to bear. Once he had told them that he was starfleet, they seemed to naturally fall into step under his command. He did not give them his rank, nor did they ask. As a result when he had suggested that they head to the station's main engineering area, they hadn't even hesitated. The small group had scared off a couple of small roving bands of looters without incident, and had even managed to find a pair of damage control lockers along the way. There, they had loaded up on all the gear they could possibly carry, which was just about everything in the two lockers and continued on their way. Even before they had arrived, Tyrone could tell that there had been an explosion of some sort. He moved through the corridors until eventually he spotted the control room, which apparently, some Starfleet officers had already reclaimed. The compartment was abuzz with activity, the likes of which were commonplace during disaster recovery work. Cooper was smart enough to know that he didn't need to be a burden so he waited for a pause in the activity before making the presence of his team well-known. "Excuse me, who's in command here?" he asked. (reply Jacobs) "Tyrone Cooper, I'm with the Rosenante. These guys are station personnel. We acquired the contents from a pair of damage control lockers on the way here. How can we help?" Tyrone nodded. "Okay you three, clear these bodies out of the compartment." he commanded the security officers, "then set up a watch outside. be vigilant of looters and rioters. They acknowledged their orders and then Tyrone looked to the others in his group. "Set up the structural integrity generators so that we don't have to worry about a collapse, and then start work on setting up the force fields to prevent contact with those .... things." Once again the team acknowledged his orders and set to work. "Okay Mister Jacobs, I'm all yours. Where do you want me?" "Caskie here Kimiko what can I do for you?" =/\= I and my party are at the junction of corridor 9C about five hundred yards from the front door, and have met with a barricade, I don't believe that we can avoid doing something unpleasant, unless you happen to have a spare squad or two in there. =/\= Josh simply started laughing. "Oh if I only had. I have a total of four security people here most of whom are guarding the main sickbay doors at present to stop unwelcome visitors dropping in. However, since you are so close how about I send my team to attack the barricade from the rear whilst your group attacks it from the front. Given that most of the barricades have been built by fairly scared civilians a joint attack from both sides might be enough to scare them off and let your team through. However please tell your security to aim high. I would rather not add to the casualty count if we can help it." =/\= I understand, we will be with you presently. =/\= Josh tapped he badge one more time. "Understood Kimiko, we badly need any help we can get. I'm briefing my security team now." Josh managed to catch Eva's eye and motioned her to follow. Kneeling down between Trei and Rosenbauer she filled them all in on what she needed. "Dr Ichijo is stuck 500 yards down that corridor at a barricade. I need all of you to go attack the barricade from this side as her security team attacks it from theirs in the hope that the civilians will abandon the barricade and the doctor and her team can get through to here." She pinned her comm badge to Mike's chest and smiled briefly. "Comms are up and running again and you are designated as comms officer for this. Make sure that everyone understands to fire as high as possible. I'd rather not have an influx of phasered civilians to deal with too. That said, I need Dr Ichijo's team here asap so do whatever you need to do to get them here. Understood." She informed Detron, Sait Jean, and Rosenbauer of the plan to attack the barricade from the rear. A Rosenante officer he didn't know would attack from the front. Detron set his phaser to mid stun as in any other rush scenario. They were instructed to aim high which he intended to do. "OK People. We have our orders. I'll take lead. Rosenbauer and Saint Jean flank each side of me. Lets move." Detron waited for them to confirm the orders. ~It looks like round 2 with the circus and I am going to be the charging elephant.~ (Reply Rosenbauer, Saint Jean) (Posted by Edward) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase 989, Sickbay & Corridor, SO Ensign Mike Rosenbauer, Day 3 0313) Things weren't getting much better. As predicted as the civilian population returned to their quarters only to find that they could not gain entrance, they had once again migrated back to the common area. By this time frustration was beginning to intermix with fear and tempers, already frayed, were beginning to snap under the pressure. Twice in the last hour, Mike and the small security force had been forced to disperse a gathering mod with stunning phaser fire. It hadn't been a desperate situation yet, with the resolve of those mobs dead set on taking sickbay and the modicum of light that was available and for that Mike was grateful. Better to be sequestered away right now rather than be part of the mob. Caskie and Eva joined Mike, Trei and Hardesty near the door. When they arrive, Jennifer crouched and Mike instinctively joined her. "Dr Ichijo is stuck 500 yards down that corridor at a barricade. I need all of you to go attack the barricade from this side as her security team attacks it from theirs in the hope that the civilians will abandon the barricade and the doctor and her team can get through to here." Mike nodded. She pinned her comm badge to Mike's chest and smiled briefly. "Comms are up and running again and you are designated as comms officer for this. Make sure that everyone understands to fire as high as possible. I'd rather not have an influx of phasered civilians to deal with too. That said, I need Dr Ichijo's team here asap so do whatever you need to do to get them here. Understood." "Yes sir." Mike answered, then gave her a broad smile. Trei wasted no time in taking charge, which as ranking officer was his place. "OK people. We have our orders. I'll take lead. Rosenbauer and Saint Jean flank each side of me. Let's move." "Understood sir." both Mike and Eva replied, before doing a quick hand of paper-rock-sissors to determine who would be right flank and who left. Eva won the toss and decided upon the left flank, which suited Mike just fine, he preferred to be on the right anyway. The relief team made their way down the corridor leaving poor Ensign Hardesty as the only security officer on watch in Sickbay. Mike had faith in the young man, so far he had shown decorum, good judgment and resolve, traits which would serve him well in his career with the fleet. The team wasn't far from the barricade, but the corridor to either side was filled with wounded and their families that had huddled as close to the Medical bay as could be permitted. That, of course made the situation more dire, since if these people rose up in riot during the action, they'd be well within the comfort zone preferred by Mike and the others. The moved forward for a short while before they spotted the barricade. It was a simple affair, made up of rolling carts turned on their side and filled with whatever detritus the mob could lay their hands upon. This crew looked a bit more determined, which showed they were foolish. Just the act op putting up the Barricade was hindering the very efforts that were needed to help these people. How a sentient species capable of Starflight could resort to such rough mob-rule tactics and panic so completely was well beyond Mike. Once the barrier was in sight, Mike tapped his commbadge, "Rosenbauer to Ichijo." (reply Ichijo) "The security team from sickbay is now within sight of the barricade blocking your route. We are preparing to engage. They have no place to run except through our lines, so I highly recommend that we stun them in order to guarantee our safety and the safety of those nearby, There are a lot of wounded and families in the corridor behind us." (reply Ichijo, Trei) Eva gave him a nod, his recommendation to her was as good as an order. Mike continued with his message to the Doctor. "Lieutenant Trei will set things off, follow our lead, Rosenbauer out." Mike closed the channel. He moved a little closer to Detron. "Sir I see at least three phasers in that group there. One on the far left and two on the right side, see them?" Mike said pointing them out for all to see. "Since we have no way of knowing what setting they are on, I suggest we start by stunning them and that when this is all done that we confiscate those phasers." "If that is your appraisal, then that is what needs to be done, on your mark" =^=Lieutenant Trei will set things off, follow our lead, Rosenbauer out.=^= Kimiko nodded to the head of the security detachment. Officially she probably needed to give a verbal order, but she couldn't give the order to shoot scared men and women. ~What did you think, Rosenbouer would come out and ask them politely to leave and they would. He saw the phasers and made a mental note of how to attack. "I see them. I will rush the center drawing their attention. You two take care of my flanks. Set phasers to mid stun and use them as needed." Detron ran at the barricade drawing attention to himself. He took out several of the mod without using a phaser. He fell back a few steps and waited for his flanks to act. Basil’s team journey through the Starbase they all were reminded of what desperate races would do lay their hands on the most basic of necessities. They had encountered bodies and he couldn’t resist stopping by just to see if he could do anything. The first ones they found had been crushed, the evidence was clear and it sickened him. It was after they started to find a lot more that he decided they shouldn’t waste more time with the dead, they needed to get to sickbay to help the living. The problem was the route that Basil wanted to take was as good as the current lighting system in the Starbase. Instead, thanks to barricades, impromptu blockages and non-functioning doors they were forced to make detours. Basil was trying to put on a brave face as he had realised a mistake he had made. In his rush to leave the ship to help he had left without a security detail. In part it was his inexperienced with something of this magnitude before. He had heard of such things happening but they were mainly, planet side events. Also as they progressed deeper into the starbase’s heart of darkness Basil was coming to the conclusion they made for great targets. They all were wearing Starfleet uniforms so this either made them a target or people who should have immediate solutions. He hoped he would get to the sickbay before anything would happen but …. “Dr Candle, we’re being followed” said Veron, a tall red-tinged skinny male nurse who had been at the rear of their party but had pushed forward to warn Basil. “I know, “ Basil replied. Whoever had been following them … no it smacked of more than that, stalking, hunting them, had not been subtle in their pursuit. Basil considered they had plenty of opportunity to attack but hadn’t, that was worrying him, why? “I think they’re just worried about us as much as we are about them.” he smiled what he hoped was reassurance, “.. thank you, Veron.” Again he tried to sound firm, confident. As Veron reluctantly returned back to the rear of the team Basil tapped his communicator and hoped it worked, “Candle to 989 main sickbay” he was trying not to draw attention by speaking quietly, (Reply any in sickbay, any nearby) “We are trying to get to sickbay but we are being followed. McLaren, Ensigns T'Vyr & Mosh, Day 3 0325) T'Vyr wiped the green blood from his left eyebrow that had gathered there from the cut on his forehead. He, Mosh and Lieutenant Commander McLaren had barely survived the crush of the initial riot near Braak's nearly two hours ago. True to the training of the ex-Rangers, they had relocated to a safer more defensive position until such time as they could feel it was reasonably calm enough to make their way to the beacon that Mike had deployed nearly two hours ago. The three of them had availed themselves of some phasers and a Klingon Disruptor along the way and had been making their way through the station when they spotted a Starfleet team in Medical blue making their way towards the same general area that T'Vyr were also hoping to reach. They had followed at a distance at first, watching to see if anyone seemed to have plans against the medical team, but things seemed to have changed. It appeared as if they had been spotted. "They've seen us I think." Mosh commented, as he fingered a deep blue bruise that dominated his left cheek. "I think you're right." Matthew replied. "I guess it's time to let them know we're on their side, eh?" T'Vyr raised an eyebrow, "Indeed, it may perhaps increase our chances of avoiding a potential conflict with other Starfleet personnel." Matthew huffed and increased his pace, holding his hands up, one of which held the disruptor, so that they could easily bee seen. "Starfleet medical team!" He shouted as he closed the distance. "I'm Lieutenant Commander McLaren assigned to the Rosenante. I have two security Officers with me. We'd like to join your party." (reply Candle) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Surgical Bay One, Doctor Emily Post, Day 3 0340) Emily stood, sterile hands raised as if preparing to conduct an orchestra. To her left the display was showing a realtime scan of Eian O'Neill's cranium. At the base of the brain, surrounding the brainstem were three, perhaps four insect-like creatures, which seemed to have latched onto the stem and were doing something that wasn't natural to his mind and his body. The engineer was heavily sedated as well as restrained. The surgery would be difficult enough without any interference from a potentially mobile patient. As the only certified Neurologist on the ship, and with Doctor Lopez still missing, the surgery fell to her to perform. It wasn't something that she relished, although she knew that without it, O'Neill would probably die. She took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly through her surgical mask. "Scalpel." she called. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Surgical Bay One, Doctor Emily Post, Day 3 0430) Emily let out a sigh of relief as she allowed the stress of the surgery to leave her body. Twice O'Neill had nearly expired on the table, both times when she had tried to surgically remove the creatures that had attached themselves to his brainstem. In the end, she had decided on a much more unorthodox means to remove the parasites. A small isolinear tag was affixed to the hard metallic outer shell of the creatures, and then with many crossed fingers, Ensign Dawson had activated the transporter and isolated the infestation and transported them out of O'Neill's body one-by-one. Then all Emily had to do was repair the surprisingly minimal damage that remained after the extraction. They had used neural regenerators, then bone knitters and finally dermal regenerators to repair the physical damage to the engineer. Once that was done, they re-dosed him with his normal medications and moved him to recovery. He would be just fine when he came around. In the meantime, Emily looked to the reinforced clear polymer container that held the five insect-like parasites that she had managed to have removed. "Doctor Post to Captain Salid." =^= Salid here, go ahead doctor.=^= "Captain. I have something here in surgical bay one that I think you should see. Some sort of insect-like creature that I just had removed from Ensign O'Neill's brainstem." =^= On my way=^= the captain replied before the channel closed. Emily took the time to clean up a little more and make certain that the insects weren't able to escape. They seemed to be having a great deal of difficulty dealing with the polymer container, Which Emily thought seemed to be a very good thing. They would occasionally try to pierce the container with their hard metallic covered tail. Fortunately they weren't making any headway. The doors to the bay slid open and Captain Salid stepped into the compartment. He was accompanied by a science officer. "Show me the specimens doctor." he said simply. Emily gestured to the countertop where the container rested. The insects inside were agitated and squirming around anxiously. The captain knelt down and took a good look at the creatures. "Are these the same creature as those shown on the data packet?" he asked. The science officer followed the captain's pose and regarded the prisoner insects for a few moments before replying. "I think so sir. I can't be a hundred percent certain though, but they certainly look very similar." The Captain frowned for a moment and then tapped his commbadge. "Salid to Ensign Narvak" (reply Narvak) "Ensign I have a biological sample of an insect that will be sent down to you shortly. It was acting as some sort of parasite in one of our crew. I need it categorized and identified, and then I need to know of a good way to kill the damned things without harming their hosts. I will be contacting captain durand of the boudicca to see if they have any personnel that can assist you in your studies. Needless to say you must handle these things with extreme caution. They are aggressive and very potentially dangerous." (reply Narvak) "Very good, Salid out." The captain turned to the other science officer and ordered him to convey the parasites to one of the science labs. The man took the specimens and left the surgical bay. The captain then turned back to Emily. "How is O'Neill?" The woman smiled as she replied, "He'll be just fine captain. there was next to no damage at all. I did more damage getting to them then they did to him. He's physically back to normal, we just need for him to wake up so we can make certain that he's not suffering from any adverse affects." Ahmed nodded. "And what about the Boudicca Crew member, Signos?" he asked? Emily was surprised to see that the captain even knew she was aboard. But she answered him easily enough. "She'll recover as well. We've managed to flush almost all the toxins from her body. We'll remove her from the sedatives and bring her around shortly. Then we'll know for certain how she is." Again the captain nodded. "Was it these creatures that poisoned her?" he asked. Emily shook her head as she replied, "No sir. it was a biologic-based neurotoxin that is very similar in chemical structure as that of the fugal fish from the South China Seas. Very deadly, but in no elated to these things at all. I don't have any idea how she was exposed to it, but she'll be fine, she's well past the danger zone and very rapidly recovering." "Good." Salid replied, and then stepped away from her. Emily excused herself and headed back into the medical bay as it was obvious that the captain wanted a moment or two of privacy. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante, Surgical Bay One, CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 3, 0432) Once Doctor Post had left the compartment, Ahmed took a deep cleansing breath. He had been holding in a great deal of stress since the entire situation had begun and this moment was the first that he had actually received some good news, although it wasn't as good as it could have been. But they were still a long way from getting the station fully operational. He was beginning to feel very fatigued, and promised himself something to eat and a few cups of the new dark roasted coffee soon. The caffeine in it would be a significant boost to his ability to remain focused. After a moment or two he tapped his commbadge. "Captain Salid to Captain Durand" (reply Durand) "Captain, I wanted to give you an update on our progress and to keep you advised of some new developments." (reply Durand) "As of a few moments ago, my sickbay has advised me that one of your crew, Signos, is rapidly recovering from toxic exposure to a biological poison. Once she is able to be discharged I'll see to it she reports in to you." (reply Durand) "In addition, we have acquired some specimens of the mysterious organisms that you sent the warning about. We haven't been able to identify them yet, but I have some people working on it as we speak. If you'd like to send someone over to assist, they'd be welcome, just have the contact ensign Narvak. Of course once we find anything out, I'll pass it on to you immediately. You might find it interesting to know that five of these things were recovered from the body of my ACEO, Lieutenant O'Neill. They had wrapped themselves around his brainstem. He is recovering rapidly once they were removed. I'll have Doctor Post send the complete surgical transcripts to your medical department within the next few minutes." (reply Durand) "We have established a treatment station and rally point at the end of the docking arm at the promenade level for medical, personnel and logistics coordination. We have also dispatched a medical team to main sickbay on the Starbase. With everything that's going on I have not received any updates as to the condition of the starbase's engineering situation. There wasn't a single trace of the poison in her almost child-like body. She turned to the nurse. "Take her off the sedative and bring her around. Then run a battery of neuro-response tests to make certain that there's no permanent damage. If she checks out, release her from sickbay." But when he awoke, he found that the figure was now sitting closer to him. He was still a small boy, not the man he had become. He looked himself over, and saw that he was okay. But very, very small. ~~Why am I so small?? I look about ten years old!~~ Of course, when he was ten years old he had looked about seven. He looked up to the figure. "Who are you? Where am I?" His voice sounded like a child's, but strong. The figure turned, and Eian could see no details on their face...couldn't tell whether they were male or female. Just larger than him, and in charge. He felt an incredible calm overtake him. "You've just been through a large struggle," the figure said in a gender-neutral voice. Eian sat up. "Where's my mother?" he found himself asking. "I'm caring for her. And your father and brother, too, just not in the same place." Eian couldn't see the figure's smile, but he knew, somehow, that they were smiling. He felt reassured. Scooting closer to the fire, he sat on the log next to the figure. For some reason, even this close and even by the light of the fire, he could only feel the figure's presence. He couldn't see their face even still. "What happened?" "The insects you encountered were harming you--it took quite a lot to bring you back. You were in grave danger multiple times. But you're safer now." Eian noticed the figure said 'safer', not 'safe.' "Then...does that mean I'm still in danger? Where am I?" "You're in sickbay," the figure stated, as if it was obvious. "And yes, you'll always be in danger. That is the nature of the place you come from. But your soul is safe." He nodded. "I know that," he said, but nothing about the comment annoyed him. Then, without realizing he was going to say it, he asked suddenly, "Will you always be there? With me?" The figure wrapped their arm around Eian lovingly, and said in a kind, parenting voice, "Of course, as long as you want me there. I love you, Eian." Eian smiled, and rested his head against the figure. Their embrace was warm and welcome, and Eian never wanted to leave. But despite this, the figure said, "Now it's time for you to return to sickbay." With the flames crackling and the crickets chirping softly, the calm woods was so peaceful and the figure's embrace was so comfortable...the last thing Eian wanted to do was go back to sickbay, where he would undoubtedly be in pain. The figure knew his thoughts. "I know it's difficult to return. It's not a perfect world, Eian. When you leave here, you'll have to face what's there." "I'd rather stay here with you," Eian said. "But you'll be with me, and I'll be with you. You'll just have others with you as well. As I said, it's not perfect. But what you have to do is to recognize the bad, and then manage to get to the good. And there will be plenty of good. Plenty of moments like this." "Not as good as this," Eian argued. "No...but you'll be here again. You'll have plenty of time for this. Use your time there to look for moments like this, and work to make moments like this." Eian looked up, and the figure released their embrace on Eian and patted him lovingly on the back of the head. "Stand up," they said. "Go in peace." He had no choice. He felt himself being drawn into the dark woods, away from the fire, away from the figure. He walked deeper and deeper into the woods, until he couldn't see a thing. And then he heard some interesting sounds... --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Main Sickbay - ATAC/SC Ensign(jg) Jessica Signos - Day 3 - 0450) It felt like waking from an nightmare, the last she could vaguely remember was being on the station has the first dose of antitoxin flushed into her system. She opened her eyes slowly amazed that they responded and the light light form the Rosenante's sickbay flooded her vision. She blinked her eyes has they slowly adjusted to the light. "Where am I?" she spoke softly has to not strain her voice. Slowly she tested her body, and she smiled has it sluggishly responded to her commands. but It at least responded. She held her hands before her flexing and unflexing her fist. (reply Dr. Post.) She looked over to the doctor at her bed side. "I see, Thank you." (reply Dr. Post.) Jessica tried to lift herself to no avail. She had some of her motor skills back but it would still be a bit more time before she made a full recover. But recover she would, the protein imbalance that preserved her youth had also prevented the toxin from taking deeper hold and aided the antitoxin on cleaning out the poison, leaving no permanent damages. She looked over to the bed next to Her, and seeing the sleeping body of Eian she asked the Doctor. "Will he be alright?" Her voice was strained coming off the toxin, concerned for the safety of a friend, and one she would become more. "are you alright, how do you feel?" she asked slower, softer at seeing him start to come around. An slender hand reaching for him. (reply Eian.) "Thank the Heavens you'll be ok." He felt her small hand slip into his, and he smiled. He turned towards her, and was alarmed to see her in another biobed. But she looked to be okay... "I uh...feel like I forgot to pay the extermination bill," he said, and cracked a goofy smile. "Thank the Heavens you'll be ok." She said, and smiled brightly at him. Then she continued in a lower voice, "Thank you so very much, I would of been lost with out you." He chuckled slightly. "I think I could say the same," he said. He looked over in the direction of the doctor, and said, "And, of course, I'm sure she had something to do with it too." (reply Jessica, room for more) It was then that he noticed Salid. Unfortunately, so did someone from Starfleet Operations, and Starfleet Security, along with an agent from Starfleet Intelligence. From what Raschen had gathered from what had been explained to him, Starfleet had come to the conclusion that pirate and renegade attacks of Fleet Transport Tugs along the Neutral Zones, border regions, and some portions of the interior have become more and more frequent. In an attemp to thwart these attacks, it had been decided that sensitive cargo, replacement parts and/or personnel be taken directly to the intended destination using ‘Blockade Runner’ type cargo ships with lower mid-grade Starfleet officers with experience as vessel masters in command. Other positions of the crew may be made up of members of Starfleet, Marines, Flight Command and/or civilian contractors. Next thing he knew, Chance had a set of sailing orders from Starfleet, and a Bill of Ownership for a small vessel from Impetuous Industries. The Private Vessel (P/V) Tranquility started off as an unarmed, yet well shielded, cargo conversion of a Raven-class vessel that was used to test small Warp-Engine designs to help smaller ships go almost as fast as capitol ships at speeds of up to warp 8 and still be highly economical. Now in addition to what she had been, the Tranquility now had a ventral and a dorsal retractable indepindent Phaser turret. The last time Chance captained the Tranquility, he transported Caskie and her late husband’s remains home to Earth, as well as return Sullivan and her Katra to Vulcan for ‘The Re-fusion’. Raschen had also been surprised about the crew he had been allowed to assemble. Terry Duke, and Terry Walker; both men along with Duke’s wife, Maggie Tamblyn, had served with Chance, not only in the war against the Cardassians, but on the USS Dennison as Doenitz Loyalists sent undercover to steal her and use the Dennison against the 52nd at the battle of sector 001 at the end of the Civil War. Instead, moments after they (and others) gained control of they ship, they returned it as part of their defection; after the Civil War Duke, Walker, and Tamblyn left the service. Lieutenant-Major Brandy Shea of Flight Command, Walkers wife, Raschen first met her when she was part of the Tranquility’s crew the last time he captained the ship. And finally an El-Aurian; lieutenant-Major Lucien La Croix, a Marine Corps trained assasin who had come out of retirement; La Croix had faught alongide Raschen during the Federation-Cardassian War under the codename Nightcrawler before retiring and becoming a mercenary after the war ended. Raschen and Shea were sitting as captain/co-pilot and 1st mate/pilot; Duke was sitting at the operations cosole, and Tamblyn sitting at engineering while La Croix and Walker stood on the bridge watching the effects of the starfield outside of the ship as the Tranquility came out of warp. None of them were really prepared for what they saw when Starbase 989 came into view. Chance knew to expect to see the USS Rosenante, but not the USS Boudicca as well. Chance and his crew were under the impression that they were going to randevous with the Keltoi-class ship at another location, but they were not adverse to conveinence. The Tranquility crew could all tell that something was wrong on the station. Hopefully it was something as simple as a power outage and everything was well in hand. But let’s face it, when you see more lights on a ship than on the base the ship is moored to; something is wrong. What made things worse was the fact of how close they were to the Romulan Neutral Zone, and that they had just dropped out of warp in the starbase's A/O (nrpg: Area of Operation) and neither the station or any of the ships have tried to make contact with them. "Duke, set us up on a three-way communication with both the Rose and the Boud." Chance ordered his ops-man. "Sure thing skipper." he said. Then after punching in the nessecary commands "Alright Chance, you're on." Looking out the forward viewport at the 2 ships they were approaching "Federation Starships Rosenante and Boudicca, Federation Starships Rosenante and Boudicca; this is Lieutenant Chance Raschen, captain of the Federation vessel Tranquility on approach to Starbase 989; request docking assignment near both vessels. I say again, Tranquility requests docking assignment near both vessels." (Reply any) "I have some cargo with special 'No Beaming' instructions for both vessels from Starbase Geneva and Mars Shipyard. Signature of recieving official is required for some of it." (Reply any) "Some of its somekind of hardware upgrades for the CES (nrpg: Communications Encryption Suite) along with the software and the rest is some other ships parts and what-not. My open channel verification code is Starwolf-3552." Raschen said. (Reply any) (Reply any) Posted by Charlie --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Boudicca – Bridge – CO Captain Durand – 0840) Things had stabilized nicely – aboard the Boudicca, at any rate – in the past several hours. The recall of off duty personnel had been completed, and although the ship was still standing at yellow alert, there appeared to be no immediate danger to her. Regulations and prudence required they maintain a state of heightened alert however. Durand caught Roberts stifling a yawn and was about to comment when he felt the contagion spread and overtake him. He in turn tried not to, and was mostly successful. The crew had more or less been up for over twenty four hours now, and fatigue was stalking all of them to some degree. He stretched quietly in the confines of the command chair, then rose and took a moment to indulge in a few isometric exercises to work the rest of the kinks out and maintain full alertness. Roberts got his attention. “Sir, incoming message from the P/V Tranquility.” Alan turned to his left to face forward and asked Roberts to put the message on the main viewscreen. The image of a man that appeared was one who seemed to be near Durand’s age, with a confident, relaxed demeanor. ~ Little old for a Lieutenant,~ he thought to himself as he observed the two solid pips on his uniform. The initial portion of his message was a docking request. To the best of his knowledge, docking control was not operating as yet. =^=I have some cargo with special 'No Beaming' instructions for both vessels from Starbase Geneva and Mars Shipyard. Signature of receiving official is required for some of it.=^= “Lieutenant Raschen, this is Captain Durand commanding the Boudicca. We have received no notification to expect any cargo. Would you be kind enough to transmit your manifest please?” He hated surprises. Even ones from Starfleet. Without official orders, he was having none of it. =^=Some of its somekind of hardware upgrades for the CES along with the software and the rest is some other ships parts and what-not. My open channel verification code is Starwolf-3552.=^= Raschen said. Without being told, Roberts ran the verification code against the database. Durand had moved to interpose himself between the ops station and the viewer, effectively blocking anyone on the other end of the signal from seeing Roberts. Doug gave the captain a wordless thumbs up; the code verified. He addressed Raschen again. “Lieutenant, there have been some… technical issues aboard the station, I don’t think you will get a response from docking control. If you would care to parallel moor with us, you are welcome to hard dock to our primary starboard gangway. Is that acceptable to you?” (Reply Raschen, assuming ‘yes’) “Very well Lieutenant, we’ll extend the gangway and mooring umbilical. I’ll have my people escort you to the bridge.” (Reply Raschen, Any) After the channel closed, he tapped his commbadge. “Durand to security. A Raven class vessel will be mooring alongside us. Would you send someone to the primary starboard gangway to escort their captain to our bridge.” (Reply Security) Another tap and he finished the job. ‘Engineering, we have a Raven class ship approaching, they are going to parallel moor with us… would you accommodate them at the starboard gangway with whatever umbilical support they need please?” (Reply Engineering, Any) (Posted by Russ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- End Compile ---------------------------------------------------------------------
