Subscounciosly he rubbed his face. He was glad to have his own face staring back at him from a mirror. He was brought back to the present by the Captain;s message "Attention all hands this is your captain speaking. The following personnel are to report for a senior staff briefing at promptly 1600 hours in the observation lounge: Jackson, Lopez, Ichijo, Sullivan, Matrix, Rabhartaigh, O'Neill, Sanok, Smith, Remey and Rosenbauer. Captain out." Tapping his comm badge, Jackson replied "Aye, Aye Sir" and tapped the link a second time to close the channel. Tom suspected Ahmed had something in mind. his friend was not one to give up easily when presented a problem. He guessed that it was due to the engineer in his friend. Gathering his material, Jackson headed off to the meeting. (reply: None) (posted by: Bill W.) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante Observation Lounge Lt tom Jackson COPS Day 8 1545) Tom had not said a lot during the meeting. He wasn't happy with the Co's decision to place himself in the center of the storm. He had struggled with keeping his mouth shut figuring Ahmed knew what he was doing. But like previous subordinates before him he now felt compelled to speak up. :Sir, If I may? I have a concern" Jackson said. (reply: CaptaiN Salid) ""I am concerned about your taking command of an AWAY Mission SIr. I beleive Starfleet Regulation 12 (Chapter 4) specifically prohibits this does it not?" Tom continued. (reply: CO/FO) It was not Tom's intention the Co's ability but Tom figured the CO was privy to much more data than the rest of them and hence more of a valuable target. Tom Jackson wished he had not said a thing after the reactions of the others played out. (Reply: Any Present) (Posted by: Bill) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - AFO - Lt Cmdr T'Larah Sullivan - 1602) T'Larah was obviously late. If a Vulcan with her emotional control could actually hate something, being late would be it. When she went to leave her quarters Norman jumped up on her and would not let go. It took her twenty minutes of pulling, prying and carefully dislodging each claw separately to get out of her quarters door with out Norman attached to her uniform. Two minutes. T'Larah walked into the Observation lounge two minutes late. Which to someone like her two minutes late was an enternity. She already knew that the Captain would want to speak with her at the conclution of the meeting. She was the last to take her seat and as soon as she did, Ahmed waisted no time beginging the meeting. "Okay, I've been looking over the quick reports that have been submitted by this team concerning your experiences on the planet. I have an impression of the society that we are dealing with, based on those reports as well as the findings from the social science team that have been collecting data on the Irlixians during your absence." "A plan was suggested that I am inclined to try. The basic premise is that we confront the leader of the Irlixian union directly in front of his people, and make our demands known. I've been considering our level of interaction with the Irlixians and have determined that we are more likely to get what we want through a more subtle approach than direct confrontation." "To those ends, I have had our team determine the location and whereabouts of the entire Irlixian leadership of the four political powers on the planet." "It is my intention to hijack the entirety of the planets communication networks so that our address to the population of the planet can not be interrupted by any government powers. During the Supreme Commander's speech, we will beam a team into the facility to act as a back-up in case something goes terribly wrong." "Jackson, Rabhartaigh, and Remey, will be on that team, which I will personally command." "While we are conducting our portion of the mission, which will be to address the assembled media at the Supreme Commander's press conference, and basically initiating official contact between the UFP and the Irlixians, a second and third team will be standing by to conduct their portion of the mission." "Matrix, Sanok, Nunez and Smith will be using the event as cover to infiltrate the Supreme Commander's personal office in the capital building to locate the exact coordinates of the Hostages. They will then find a way to disable the shields defending that facility if that turns out to be the location, so that the rescue team can begin to move to recover our officers. Once they have found the information we need the third team will swing into immediate action. Lieutenant Matrix will have command of this team." "Lopez, Ichijo, Rosenbauer, and O'Neill are our rescue team, under Mister Rosenbauer's command. Their job will be to recover our officers. Once they are on their way, Matrix's team will beam into the facility and attempt to ascertain the condition of the Bohrs. They will prepare it for take off. They will make preparations to destroy the ship if it can not be reasonably recovered. They will also locate the Medea and make arrangements to destroy that vessel as well. They will not initiate either of those actions without my or Commander Sullivan's express orders." "Rosenbauer's team will recover the hostages and lead them to the Bohrs. If this is impossible they will be returned to the ship by transporter. Once the crew is recovered, they will be folded into the recue team, so everyone on that team will be carrying extra equipment." "I fully expect that once the Rosenante decloaks that the Irlixian military are going to make a run towards us. At their best speed in system, we'll have a little under thirty minutes. Commander Sullivan and Lieutenant Raschen will remain on the Rosenante to conduct any military actions necessary to protect this ship and to render support for the rest of the mission." "I also suspect that the Irlixians did not develop the level of technology that they have from a crash. It is my opinion that there is a cosmetically disguised member of the Rhone Union Government that is actually a Starfleet officer, responsible for violating the Prime Directive. Mister Remey will be responsible for confirming that suspicion. If that indeed does turn out to be the case, we will be taking them into custody." The Captain then turned his eyes towards Ios. "Ios' job is going to be the most difficult. " he continued, "We will be making our presence officially known to all the inhabitants of this world and we will be making a statement that we will only consider formal diplomatic ties with this world when a planetary government is established. To that affect, we will also be announcing that we will be dealing directly with Ios and only Ios as the recognized ambassador to the Federation. At her request, we will be giving her the opportunity to establish a fair and just government, who will be able to join the interstellar community. We're going to give her the chance, what she does with it, will be up to her. There will be further exchange of technology with the Irlixians and we will be recovering or destroying the two ships that started this whole mess in the first place." The captain looked around the table, meeting the eyes of each of his officers in turn. "I fully expect comments on this plan of action as I've laid out. Each will be considered. Final adjustments will be made prior to mission launch which will be scheduled tonight at 2015 hours. Who would like to begin?" T'Larah waited for the other officers to state their ideas before she continued with her own. (Reply none) (Posted by Todd) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - ACSO Louis Remey, Day 8 - 1603) The air of the Lounge was muted as the officers awaited the Captain's arrival which was slightly on the late side but Ahmed strode in with a purpose, no doubt he had spent all his available time considering the situation. By his facial expression he had lent considerable weight considering a decision and was firmly set on a plan of action. The inclusion of the Irlixian Ios was notable as was the absence of Commander Sullivan. He made directly for the head of the table and launched into his dialogue as soon as the others had taken their seats.. During the Supreme Commander's speech, we will beam a team into the facility to act as a back-up in case something goes terribly wrong." "Jackson, Rabhartaigh, and Remey, will be on that team, which I will personally command." Louis gave a slight start at the announcement. That the Captain would be leading a team of four to the planet was startling but no more so than his inclusion on the team. The premise of the plan was simple, use the Irlixian's own airwaves to bypass conventional diplomatic channels. This would be a shock to the populace but indelible proof that another civilization was indeed here and aggressively challenging the right of their government to the hostages they held. This could be construed also as a challenge to that governmental authority which could mean repercussions but at the same time the Irlixian populace if they had any backbone at all might well begin exerting pressure upon their government. The prospect of a greater war than that being waged upon their planet which could extend into space should certainly not sit well with the majority of the civilian population. Should the Rhone government decide to widen their war it would be no secret then. And if that address carried peaceful overtures governmental disinformation and dogma would be unlikely to carry sufficient weight to stick any charges to this Federation vessel that would not be seen through. The question then was what Ahmed expected from the exchange. How sick was the populace of the current hostilities and would the prospect of a widened war galvanize them to action? To all appearances they were maintained at least marginally well but their time on the planet had shown that the civilians were uneasy at best as to the status quo, this might be the lever needed to tip them into aggressive action. It could also undermine their governmental authority enough to make their goals here doable. At the least it could conceivably distract the Rhone government enough to allow the Rosenante contingent enough breathing room to carry out their objectives. This then would be the primary hoped for effect, the fallback plan would depend on how much they stirred up the Irlixian noncombatants themselves. "While we are conducting our portion of the mission, which will be to address the assembled media at the Supreme Commander's press conference, and basically initiating official contact between the UFP and the Irlixians, a second and third team will be standing by to conduct their portion of the mission." His supposition had been correct then, Captain Salid was counting on the distraction it caused to allow the machination to succede. "Matrix, Sanok, Nunez and Smith will be using the event as cover to infiltrate the Supreme Commander's personal office in the capital building to locate the exact coordinates of the Hostages. Commander Sullivan and Lieutenant Raschen will remain on the Rosenante to conduct any military actions necessary to protect this ship and to render support for the rest of the mission." The plan was intricate and hinged on perfect timing but if that was achieved it stood a good chance of succeeding. Any hiccups in that master plan however could spell downfall to the mission. Every effort would have to be exerted to insure its viability including up to the minute intel. "I also suspect that the Irlixians did not develop the level of technology that they have from a crash. It is my opinion that there is a cosmetically disguised member of the Rhone Union Government that is actually a Starfleet officer, responsible for violating the Prime Directive. Mister Remey will be responsible for confirming that suspicion. If that indeed does turn out to be the case, we will be taking them into custody." Louis sucked in a breath, his input would be vital in that area, baselines for the Irlixians were well documented and any variation from that norm would be quickly noted. Scans would have to be done quickly though, they would not be given a lot of time to dally. Captain Salid then addressed the Irlixian in the room. "Ios' job is going to be the most difficult. We will be making our presence officially known to all the inhabitants of this world and we will be making a statement that we will only consider formal diplomatic ties with this world when a planetary government is established. There will be further exchange of technology with the Irlixians and we will be recovering or destroying the two ships that started this whole mess in the first place." That promised to be the stickiest part of the master plan, the formation of a planetary government among warring factions would be a difficult job though its initial stages would be the simplest with the Rosenante supplying the muscle. How she would deal with the intrigues of the power struggle amongst them would be the telling point. Was she even the best choice for the job, strong minded enough to strong-arm the factions into a cohesive government? She was all they had at this time and would have to do. Salid's eyes met and held his eyes along with the others, Louis nodded as he did so. . "I fully expect comments on this plan of action as I've laid out. Each will be considered. Final adjustments will be made prior to mission launch which will be scheduled tonight at 2015 hours. Who would like to begin?" Louis stood. "Captain if I may interject, your plan is bold and ambitious but workable in the short term if we show restraint I believe. The Irlixian initial reaction though is problematic, I would suggest a short interruption of power at the site of their meeting as it starts and our broadcast begins. This will add a bit of confusion without doing damage and we can make our appearance with greater alacrity." "If we go in without disguise we run the risk of having my scans noted as a hostile gesture BUT it adds to the viability and evidence given by our broadcast. I will work on some less noticeable scanning method. " "The most difficult part of this plan outside of the intricate timing of the noted assignments would be the end game, that of forming a cohesive planetary government, the Rosenante or some other equal force will have to be stationed here in the interim with Ios closely guarded, it stands to reason that the representatives of the current governmental authorities will not take well the terms that will be dictated to them." (Reply: Salid, any) (posted by Charles) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 8 - 1605) Ahmed noted Remey with a nod. Louis stood. "Captain if I may interject, your plan is bold and ambitious but workable in the short term if we show restraint I believe. The Irlixian initial reaction though is problematic, I would suggest a short interruption of power at the site of their meeting as it starts and our broadcast begins. This will add a bit of confusion without doing damage and we can make our appearance with greater alacrity." "An excellent idea Ensign. I'll implement that into the plan." "If we go in without disguise we run the risk of having my scans noted as a hostile gesture BUT it adds to the viability and evidence given by our broadcast. I will work on some less noticeable scanning method. " "I agree, I considered our appearance for this portion of the operation carefully. After speaking with Ios, I determined that using our native forms would have a greater and more positive affect, than instilling a sort of fearful paranoia amongst the Irlixians. Almost all Irlixians have see corpses of Humans, Andorian's and other federation species as a result of the crash. What they have not seen is the living breathing members of those species. They've not heard us speaking, nor seen how we act. It is our combined belief that a certain degree of awe at these new experiences will aid in delivering our message beyond what the media outlets will offer." Ahmed responded, "but I can definitely see an advantage to the more clandestine scanning method. See what you and Rabhartaigh can come up with." Remey continued. "The most difficult part of this plan outside of the intricate timing of the noted assignments would be the end game, that of forming a cohesive planetary government, the Rosenante or some other equal force will have to be stationed here in the interim with Ios closely guarded, it stands to reason that the representatives of the current governmental authorities will not take well the terms that will be dictated to them." Ahmed smiled. Remey was a sharp one and he was bringing up the exact sorts of questions and comments that Ahmed was hoping for. "I agree." Ahmed said with a nod. "The reason I was late to the briefing was because just prior to this meeting I was on the line with the Federation Diplomatic Corps concerning this action. After much discussion with the head of the corps and with federation Councilwoman T'Vyr of Vulcan, it was agreed that as we the Federation are responsible for this unbalanced social and technological situation, that we be the ones to aid in rectifying this process in a humane and politically sound method." "As such they have agreed to dispatch three federation starships, One of which is to act as a mobile meeting facility and which will carry a federation diplomatic Team here to carry on this work once we've finished. This plan was approved by the Federation Foreign Policy Committee just minutes ago, we have all the diplomatic and if necessary the peacekeeping support that we require for this mission. I do want to make one thing very clear. Our goal here with this political maneuvering is not to force the Irlixians into unifying and implementing just social and governmental reforms, It is simply to nudge them along that path through enticements. We will not be forcing anything on anyone. We will help them and guide them if they want our guidance, through the support of social programs and scientific advances that will help them maintain their environment, reduce or eliminate warfare on their planet and aid in infrastructure building." "In that vein, Ios will be our appointed channel of communications there. We are not going to demand that she be placed in charge, nor are we going to assert any political clout to force any reforms that we want. However, should the Irlixians wish to join the interstellar community and mature their political and social evolution with our assistance, they will need to perform a few key tasks if they wish to continue to work with the United Federation of planets." "Any one else have comments or concerns?" Ahmed asked. (reply any) (posted by Charles) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 8 - 1606) The Captain's address wasn't long, and so it wasn't hard for Eian to pay attention. But he did find himself resorting to tapping his heel silently under the table. He wondered if anyone noticed the action shaking his body slightly, but he doubted it--everyone was focused on the Captain. Eian was also focused on the Captain, but kept his attention to Salid's words by diverting his visual attention to his crewmates' faces. Studying their reactions to their orders, how they perceived the Captain's plan, and their feelings about the mission to come was an excellent way of paying attention to what Salid was saying. As those with Attention Divergence/Hyperactivity Disorder knew well, the more meaningful things one paid attention to at the same time, the better their attention focused on each of those things than if they were to try to handle just one. And it was especially helpful to occupy different senses at once--concentrating on looking at something different than what one was listening to, while simultaneously occupying physical senses by tapping one's foot or fingers, proved to be optimal for paying attention. And so when Eian got his orders, he had no problem processing the information quickly and efficiently. He couldn't help but feel a bit of excitement. He was ecstatic he was going on the rescue mission--while tactics and strategy were his strong points, he was most comfortable in the thick of the action. He was the kind of engineer that would rather crawl through the Jeffries tube and manually fix the problem than enter code into the computer, and the kind of tactician who would rather test his theory on the battlefield than in a simulation. As he found himself thinking about the rescue mission, he realized his attention had wandered from the meeting for a moment. When he 'came back' to the conversation, Remey and Salid were discussing whether they would go in disguised or not. He was able to pay attention to the rest of the meeting and he didn't think he had missed anything of major importance. Finally, the Captain asked, "Anyone else have comments or concerns?" "Sir," Eian answered, "I have one. I'm sorry I haven't had the opportunity to introduce myself--I'm Ensign Eian O'Neill." (reply Salid) "Thank you, Sir. I was wondering if we have a map of the facility from which we're rescuing the Bohrs' crew, and if so, I'd like to suggest we run a quick holodeck simulation. I have a skeleton program that allows one to input the basic boundaries of the mission and then serves as a tactical simulation. It takes less than five minutes to program, and requires minimal information about the mission to be effective." He had helped program the holodeck skeleton program in the Academy, along with two other cadets. It had been a fun 'weekend' project that ended up boosting their grades on most tactical simulations, as they all had extra practice. It also proved to be an excellent workout. (reply Salid) (posted by Morgan G) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante-Observation Lounge-CTac/Sec-LT Chance Raschen-1608) Ahmed strode into the Observation lounge as if he were in charge, which incidentally he happened to be. His stride was long and unhurried and he was as confident as he could be in the next stage of the mission. Chance recognized that particular "strut" because he himself used it many times when he was a ship's captain in the Irregular Federation Forces; even as a Doenitz privateer. Once everyone present had taken their seats, the skipper began the briefing. The captain laid out a very detailed plan outlining how they were going to seize control of the planet's broadcasts, revealing themselves to the locals, and rescue the Federation members still held captive on the planet below. The part that really caught Chance's attention was when Salid said "I fully expect that once the Rosenante decloaks that the Irlixian military are going to make a run towards us. At their best speed in system, we'll have a little under thirty minutes. Commander Sullivan and Lieutenant Raschen will remain on the Rosenante to conduct any military actions necessary to protect this ship and to render support for the rest of the mission. "I also suspect that the Irlixians did not develop the level of technology that they have from a crash. It is my opinion that there is a cosmetically disguised member of the Rhone Union Government that is actually a Starfleet officer, responsible for violating the Prime Directive." After the skipper was done talking with Ios and Remey, "Any one else have comments or concerns?" Ahmed asked. Raschen raised his hand and asked "Sir, what makes you think that it could be a Starfleet officer and not some despot running from the authorities and finding some backwater planet where he can become a major influence?" (Reply Salid) (Reply Salid, any who wish) Posted by Charlie Raschen --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 8 - 1610) "Sir," one of the new officers stated as he stood, "I have one. I'm sorry I haven't had the opportunity to introduce myself--I'm Ensign Eian O'Neill." "Welcome aboard Ensign." Ahmed replied, "Please continue." "Thank you, Sir. I was wondering if we have a map of the facility from which we're rescuing the Bohrs' crew, and if so, I'd like to suggest we run a quick Holodeck simulation. I have a skeleton program that allows one to input the basic boundaries of the mission and then serves as a tactical simulation. It takes less than five minutes to program, and requires minimal information about the mission to be effective." Ahmed shook his head as he answered. "I'm afraid not Ensign. All we know is it's rough location. If this facility turns out to be the site of the rescue operation, which I feel is likely, there will be a few things that we will need to keep in mind." The captain replied. "First, The mountain that this facility is buried in, is comprised of an ore which contains high concentrations of Magnesite, which means sensors are going to be useless in getting us a layout. Also that means once inside, the rescue teams commbadge communications will be limited to the confines of the facilities, although in theory they could be relayed from the Bohrs communications relays to the Rosenante. Secondly, we are expecting a reasonably large number of military personnel there, so stealth will be essential for the success of the team. Speed will be the other factor. You'll have to plan to the best of your ability with very little hard intelligence." (reply Any) Chance then spoke up. Raschen raised his hand and asked "Sir, what makes you think that it could be a Starfleet officer and not some despot running from the authorities and finding some backwater planet where he can become a major influence?" "Good Question," The captain commented. "It looks like there are a number of clues pointing towards a Starfleet officer. First and foremost is the level of technical development as well as the types of technology that we are seeing. They are major complex systems that an untrained person simply wouldn't be able to reproduce without specialized training. Additionally, there is Ios' historical description of how the Rhone Union was founded. " "I find it unlikely that a despot on the run would take the time to study Federation warp design or be able to develop advanced shield technology or replication technology before attempting to seize power. It seems more likely that our individual was attempting to conduct damage control caused by the unexpected crash of the Medea and crossed the line. It most likely started off as a matter of humanitarian intentions which later morphed into something more egotistical. It is my belief that the individual in question was most likely already on the planet, perhaps as a cultural observer. That this individual has extensive starship systems design training rather than social engineering training and that they were already cosmetically altered to appear to be Irlixian. I would also surmise that one of the technologies that was recovered would have been a holographic emitter assembly and the EMH program files and systems from the Medea, or else they have been visiting the Medea on a regular basis and the EMH is likely fully functional." "Whether a Starfleet officer or a despot on the run. The fact remains that there is still a violation of the prime directive that needs to be addressed here." (reply Any) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - ACEO, Lt. Steven Matrix, Day 8 -1611*) The depth of the discussion in the meeting wasn't entirely unexpected, but the plan to infiltrate the Irlixian home world was ingenious but dangerous nonetheless. Matrix listened intently to the discussion and what the Captain would require of his crew. The Captain continued..."Matrix, Sanok, Nunez and Smith will be using the event as cover to infiltrate the Supreme Commander's personal office in the capital building to locate the exact coordinates of the Hostages. They will then find a way to disable the shields defending that facility if that turns out to be the location, so that the rescue team can begin to move to recover our officers. Once they have found the information we need the third team will swing into immediate action. Lieutenant Matrix will have command of this team." Matrix was surprised by the dramatic plan and more so by the Captain's decree that Matrix lead an away team. Matrix hadn't entirely healed from his injury, but he hadn't much time with the doctor to determine his physical limitations. The pain was manageable, but he didn't yet have full range of motion in his left arm and shoulder. The Captain ended his primary comments with a question to the staff. "I fully expect comments on this plan of action as I've laid out. Each will be considered. Final adjustments will be made prior to mission launch which will be scheduled tonight at 2015 hours. Who would like to begin?" Matrix adjusted his sling has he stood up to ask a question, "Sir...the Irlixian's do indeed possess a level of technology surprisingly advanced. We hadn't anticipated the advanced level of their technology, nor the tactical prowess of their security forces. Given our last engagement and my personal interaction with one of their weapons, what are your orders with regard to engaging hostile Irlixians?" asked Matrix. (Reply Salid) "Yes Sir, my concern is with penetrating the Supreme Commander's office. To be sure, they will be heavily guarded and likely a strategic quagmire for a properly armed security team, let alone a small infiltration force." replied Matrix. (Reply Salid) Matrix smiled, "Absolutely Captain. I'm sure my engineering crews can improvise and adapt." replied Matrix as he retook his chair. (Reply Salid, any) (Posted by Steve) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 8 - 1612) Next up was Lieutenant matrix, who surprisingly enough was wearing an arm sling. Ahmed could only assume that he'd be cleared by medical prior to the mission, otherwise matrix would have to remain on board ship. "Sir...the Irlixians do indeed possess a level of technology surprisingly advanced. We hadn't anticipated the advanced level of their technology, nor the tactical prowess of their security forces. Given our last engagement and my personal interaction with one of their weapons, what are your orders with regard to engaging hostile Irlixians?" The Lieutenant asked. "As always, mister Matrix," The captain responded, "We should do our absolute best to minimize casualties. Phasers are to be used on personnel only in the stun setting. Of course avoiding detection would be the first and best means to accomplish our mission goals here. Should that fail, a quick and preferably quiet interdiction would be best. We do not want needless casualties as they would make our future relations here very complicated." "Yes Sir, my concern is with penetrating the Supreme Commander's office. To be sure, they will be heavily guarded and likely a strategic quagmire for a properly armed security team, let alone a small infiltration force." Matrix continued. "I suspect that a great deal of the Supreme Commander's direct security will be at his present location and will therefore not be a threat. I do still anticipate that there will be some security on scene, although I would think that they would be a significantly reduced force from their normal numbers." "I leave it to you to come up with a means to infiltrate, avoid detection and accomplish your team's objectives without alerting the Irlixians, if at all possible." Matrix smiled, "Absolutely Captain. I'm sure my engineering crews can improvise and adapt." replied Matrix as he retook his chair. (reply any) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - AFO - Lt Cmdr T'Larah Sullivan - 1615) "Sir," one of the new officers stated as he stood, "I have one. You'll have to plan to the best of your ability with very little hard intelligence." "Ensign, even with out a lot of hard intelligence a few runs through our best guess simulations shouldn't be discounted. I'd like to take a look at your program shortly after this meeting. You can bring your program to the holodeck and we can put some variables in it. Ios has been to the facility if she is not busy doing other things her direct input would be appreciated, as the only person that has been in the facility that is here." T'Larah then turned to Ios. "Ios, if you can't find time in your ambassadorial schedule we can make do with the information you have already provided us." (Reply Ios, Ensign O'Neill) After the discussion was over Lieutenant Raschen spoke up. If there was one thing Chance was good at, it was playing devil's advocate. T'Larah was pretty sure that in his former line of work, and as good as he was at it, he may have been regarded as some sort of demon. "Sir, what makes you think that it could be a Starfleet officer and not some despot running from the authorities and finding some backwater planet where he can become a major influence?" "Good Question," The captain commented. That this individual has extensive star ship systems design training rather than social engineering training and that they were already cosmetically altered to appear to be Irlixian. I would also surmise that one of the technologies that was recovered would have been a holographic emitter assembly and the EMH program files and systems from the Medea, or else they have been visiting the Medea on a regular basis and the EMH is likely fully functional." "Whether a Starfleet officer or a despot on the run. The fact remains that there is still a violation of the prime directive that needs to be addressed here." "I agree, the time line is too short. With out at least someone to help them interpret the theories of the technology would be something like a Terran 14th century gentleman scholar would be able to interpret a Russian nuclear submarine and it's function. It would take generations. No offense to the Irlixians, but as ingenuitive and brilliant as your race is a whole still could not have reverse engineered the technology that quickly." "We have three more available mister Raschen should they be needed. What did you have in mind?" Chance focused on his captain. Ahmed met his eyes. "Sir, if we can place a few around the planet, they will make it easier for us to highjack their planetary comms. Plus we can use them to monitor for any launches from the far side of the planet, just in case." Ahmed considered the suggestion for a moment. The stealth probes were a very large asset, but they were finite. If he used all of them now, it might well be a while before more could be replicated to replace them. "Alright. I'll authorize the use of two of our remaining three. We'll keep the third one in reserve, just in case we should need it." "It might also be a good idea sir to place the ship in a geosync orbit over where most of the native's spacecraft will be launching from; and orient the Rose so her nose is pointed toward that location to make it easier to targets hostile vessels." Ahmed glanced at Sullivan. "I'll leave the placement of the ship to the officers that will be commanding her during the mission Mister Raschen. You can discuss those tactics with commander Sullivan after the briefing." Ahmed caught a gesture from Ichijo indicating that she had something to add. "Doctor?" He intoned and indicated that she should speak with a gesture of his right hand. "I have a couple of observations to make. Ios, we'll have your mother beamed aboard prior to the start of the operations. I'm certain that between you and Mister Rosenbauer that Mister Dawson, my transporter operator, can locate her and have her safely here in no time. Is there anyone else we should be concerned for?" Ios shook her head as she answered, "No captain. Just my mother." "Very well then." Ahmed responded, continue doctor. "OK, secondly, perhaps a variation of Remey's concern. I've decided that the best way to deal with this would be to renounce my citizenship to the Rhone Union and not accept any citizenship from any of the other governments. I will make an argument that what we need are Irlixians, not factions, but a single unified voice for the people." "It may not work," she added after a moment's pause, "but I can't know what direction to take this until I can open a dialog of conversation. I expect that it will be a very trying process, but one that will be infinitely worth any difficulties that might take place if our..." She placed he had over her heart, "... My goal is to be achieved." Ahmed nodded, " Ios I think is the only hope that we have of truly establishing any sort of rapport here with these people. We're going to have to trust that she is sincere and is willing to take big risks to work towards this unification." Ios nodded, but said nothing more. "Lastly, would it be feasible to utilize the same trick used by our ensign in the shuttlecraft, to disable the energy weapons in the areas that we might venture in?" Kimiko finished. Ahmed had no idea what she was referring to, so he could only look at the two new officers. "Ensigns O'Neill, Rabhartaigh, can you enlighten me?" he asked. It was one of the oldest images in the cube, a pre 2400 image from home. It had been a turning point in his life. He kept looking it and said, " There is this branch of science, called social engineering. The main concept of it is to present the choice we want as the choice they came up with. Internal choice is always more effective than external." ~ The alliance was our choice, or so it seemed. ~ " Mere highjacking of media does not really allow us to do more than to present the external point. To change the perspective we might want to employ constructive media programming. To scourge the media of all factions for all the opinions, how ever fleeting, positive to our goals." Machaire turned the cube and watched as the faces changed, smiles grew less frequent, people just vanished and more closed expressions were growing to be a norm. " From the material in existence one can build a new history, more unified view of future, a progressive option. An option which actually seem to have been the goal of the leaders in the past but for some reasons, mainly those reasons which are against us, has been ignored. He changed datapath in the cube and instead of family path started to follow the images of leaders of old. The butchers and killers who stood as leader because it was easier to ignore their deeds than to call for justife and forfeit the peace they forged. " It would not take all that much time to compile suitable soundbites from the Irlixian media files to be used as first wave of attack uppon the opinions of the masses and leaders alike. I rigged the shuttle to emit a standard EM field using the directional controls, one undamaged phaser bank, and a gel pack. I'm pretty sure we can do better with that with the resources the Rosenante has, but the basic idea is the same. The EM field jams their phasers' frequency, and renders them completely useless. Meanwhile our phasers are tuned to a frequency with a polarity effect to the EM field--it's like a vertical carrier wave going through the mesh of a horizontal blocker." Ahmed considered the words of his new science officer for a moment before replying. "You ask does Starfleet have the right? And I answer, no they do not." Ahmed paused for a moment, "However, they have a responsibility to aid the Irlixians in regaining a balanced control of their present and they have a responsibility to guide them towards eventual unification and peaceful co-existence, only in as much as we are guiding and not forcing. Influence and the exercise of will upon another are very different things, and were it not for the fact that all of this was started by a federation starship that apparently crashed here, and by the potential interference by some federation officer or officers that survived that event, I can not think that the Irlixians would have chosen a bloody conflict and political divisiveness if we had not provided fuel for the fire." "Starfleet Command, the Federation Council and the Diplomatic Corps all seem to agree that we have a degree of responsibility in the perversion of this culture and that we have a duty to aid them in getting back on track. I agree with that assessment. I also can clearly see your point and I can safely say that your very ideas will most likely be debated hotly in the Federation Council chambers for some time to come, Mister Rabhartaigh." When this briefing is over, I'd like for you to put some of that talent to work and come up with a smaller version of that that the second and third away team members can take along with them in their mission." (reply O'Neill) Ahmed looked around the table. It seemed that the meeting was about to wrap up when his old friend Jackson spoke up. "Sir, If I may? I have a concern" Jackson said. "Of course lieutenant, let's hear it." Ahmed replied, motioning for his Chief of Operations to speak his mind. "I am concerned about your taking command of an away mission, sir. I believe Starfleet Regulation 12 - Chapter 4, specifically prohibits this does it not?" Tom continued. "It does lieutenant. I won't argue that. However I will point out also, that there are numerous Starfleet regulations that also give the captain a great deal of latitude whenever the potential for loss of life, ship or when the security of the Federation is at stake." "It is my opinion and belief that all three of these conditions exist. Allow me to explain." "First there's the potential loss of life and the potential loss of the Bohrs. We have seen clear indications that the Irlixians in control of the Rhone Union have a lack of moral fortitude and would cause needless harm to personnel and materials to advance their own agenda. This was apparent with the attack on the Bohrs as it was with the attack upon our own away team when they beamed to the surface." "Therefore, Under Starfleet General Order 24, and I quote, 'If a commanding officer deems that an individual or group of individuals pose a threat to Starfleet personnel or Federation civilians, he may take any action deemed necessary (including the use of force) to secure the safety of those threatened.' "As to my authority to interpret the prime directive and act against those responsible for it's violation. I would refer you to Starfleet General Order 30 and General Order 10, which state explicitly, and I quote, 'Starfleet Command recognizes the right of each ship commander to interpret the specifications of the Prime Directive as he sees fit, consistent with the conditions of other existing General orders in effect, and based upon circumstances that may arise in dealing with newly discovered sentient races.' and 'If there exists eyewitness testimony by senior officers or similar verifiable evidence that an individual has violated the Prime Directive, said individual may be relieved of duty by a duly sworn representative of the Federation government and placed under immediate arrest. The governmental representative shall then take such action as he deems necessary to minimize the results of the violation.' And finally, as to my authority to conduct negotiations with the Irlixians on this matter, I would refer you to Starfleet General Order 11, which states and I quote 'Starfleet officers with the rank of captain or higher are granted full authority to negotiate conditions of agreement and/or treaties with legal representatives of non-Federation planets. In such circumstances, the acting officer carries de facto (by default) powers of a Federation special ambassador. Any and all agreements arranged in this manner are subject to approval by the Commander in Chief of Starfleet Command and the Secretary of Starfleet.' "So you see, I feel that my duties under these general orders outweigh any restrictions placed upon my leading the away team as defined under Starfleet Regulation 12 - Chapter 4." "If you feel they do not, then you are free to make a formal protest and sit out from the away mission. I would hope though, mister Jackson that you'd decline to withdraw your support, because I will need the aid of every single able bodied Senior officer on this ship to make things right." "The Irlixians are depending on us to police our own and to help them restore their natural political, cultural and social evolution." (reply Jackson) Ahmed nodded. "I knew I could count on your support, Lieutenant. Just as I know I can count on every officer here to do the right thing. If anyone believes that they would be in violation of their personal morals or that they would be in any way violating their oaths as Starfleet officers by breaking any of the fleets rules or tenants, I urge you to make the fact known and I will dismiss you from the away team assignments as I have detailed them." (reply Any) Ahmed looked around the compartment. No one seemed to indicate that they wanted out of the mission. He smiled. "Very well then, You are all dismissed. My Team will assemble in transporter Room one at 1800 Hours. Mister O'Neill, Please make your devices available for use prior to the deployment of the away teams. Mister Sullivan, a word please." (reply All) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge - CO, Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 8 -1636*) When the last person left Sullivan stood and assumed parade rest, "Sir." "Relax commander, I'm certain that you had a very good reason for being tardy to my briefing." Ahmed stated as he gestured for her to relax somewhat. "I wanted to discuss with you some standing orders that I want you to adhere to, during our upcoming operation." (reply Sullivan) "First I want to make it clear that you are to make this ship and those serving aboard her your first priority. If you encounter stiff Irlixian military action you are to withdraw back to Federation space." Ahmed held up a hand to forestall any argument that she may put forward. "This first order is not negotiable, Commander. So don't push the issue with me on this one." (reply Sullivan) "Secondly, If we manage to succeed in our portion of the mission, we will need to be able to recover the away teams quickly and efficiently, so therefore if you are forced to engage Irlixian ships, you are to draw them away from the planet, disable them and then return. You are to do everything within your power to minimize and if possible prevent the deaths of any Irlixians on those ships." (reply Sullivan) "Third, should I be killed or captured, I want you to personally hand deliver a report that I will leave in the ship's safe to the head of the federation Diplomatic Corps. We have an obligation to these people and I don't want that obligation forgotten just because I may not be here to force the issue." (reply Sullivan) "Of course, these are merely plans to discuss possible failures of the mission. I do not plan on failing this operation. Do you have any questions, Commander?" (reply Sullivan) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - ACEO Ensign Eian O'Neill - Day 8 - 1637) "I assume, then, that this is something we can reproduce," the Captain responded. "When this briefing is over, I'd like for you to put some of that talent to work and come up with a smaller version of that, that the second and third away team members can take along with them in their mission." "Yes, Sir," Eian said, and wrote that down on his PADD. Now he had two things to do--go over the holodeck tactical program with Commander Sullivan, and reproduce his EM Jamming field. He drew small check mark boxes next to his tasks so he could later check them off. The meeting was almost over, and Eian was glad. He was getting slightly antsy and wanted to get on with his preparation for the mission. When the Captain's body language said that he was about to wrap up the meeting, Eian posed himself in his chair to get up as soon as Salid said the word 'dismissed.' But then Lieutenant Jackson spoke. "I am concerned about your taking command of an away mission, Sir. I believe Starfleet Regulation 12- Chapter 4, specifically prohibits this does it not?" ~Oooh, no~ Eian thought, and sat back in his seat. ~The only way the Captain can answer this is to quote Starfleet Regulations back.~ "It does, Lieutenant. I won't argue that. however, I will point out also, that there are numerous Starfleet Regulations that give the Captain a great deal of latitude whenever the potential for loss of life, ship, or when the security of the Federation is at stake. It is my opinion and beleif that all three of these conditions exist." ~Great! That's a perfectly good explanation~ "Allow me to explain," Salid continued. ~Awww, crap.~ "First there's the potential loss of life and the potential loss of the Bohrs. We have seen clear indications that the Irlixians..." ~And that's about where I check out,~ Eian thought. His thoughts began to wander to the contents on his PADD, and as he silently tapped his heel under the table he began to sing the age-old Christmas carol 'Star of Wonder' in his head while simultaneously playing out a scene from one of his favorite holodeck programs, the re-enactment of the crossing of the Delaware River in the American Revolutionary War, followed by the attack on the Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey. ~I still want to go to Trenton some day...~ "As to my authority to interpret the prime directive and act against those responsible for its violation, I would refer you to Starfleet General Order 30 and General Order 10, which state explicitly and I quote, "..." Every now and then Eian "came up for air," but each time he did, he found the same discussion going on and went right back into his 'focus retention world'. That was what his ADHD coach had called it--it was a state of mind that would allow him not to fall asleep or disturb the meeting, and would leave him able to focus afterward. ~The irony is that a lot of famous law makers were on that mission, crossing the Delaware. Wonder if they could sit through meetings like this...?~ "And finally," Salid began to conclude, and that word brought Eian out of his entertained state. ~Finally!~ "As to my authority to conduct negotiations with the Irlixians on this matter, I would refer you to Starfleet General Order 11..." ~Well...I was close. I *am* close. I should wrap up the crossing of the Delaware so it doesn't feel incomplete.~ In his head, Eian fast-forwarded to the actual attack. "So you see, I feel that my duties under these general orders outweigh any restrictions placed upon my leading the away team as defined under Starfleet Regulation 12 - Chapter 4." ~Three more Hessians to go. Hang in there, George.~ "The Irlixians are depending on us to police our own and to help them restore their natural political, cultural, and social evolution." ~Please don't say much, Jackson...~ "I knew I could count on your support, Lieutenant. Just as I know I can count on every officer here to do the right thing." ~Woops, sounds like he's talking to all of us now.~ He would have to get back to George Washington and the Hessians, set to the soundtrack of "Old Earth Carols" later. "If anyone believes that they would be in violation of their personal morals or that they would be in any way violating their oaths as Starfleet officers by breaking any of the fleet's rules or tenants, I urge you to make the fact known and I will dismiss you from the away team assignments as I have detailed them." Eian put on his best poker face and gave the Captain a convincing nod. "Very well, then, you are all dismissed," Salid said, and Eian nearly jumped out of his chair. "My team will assemble in transporter room one at 1800 hours. Mister O'Neill, please make your devices available for use prior to the deployment of the away teams. Mister Sullivan, a word please." "Yes, Sir," Eian responded as he headed out. of the room. He figured he could go to Engineering for now and rig the device, and then as soon as he was done with the basic programming, he could go catch up with Sullivan to give her the holo-program. ~Well done, Eian. You survived your first meeting and you didn't fall asleep, start humming, or otherwise make a fool of yourself. Between the undercover mission to Irlix, and how busy things had been since returning to the ship, Sanok had not had time to meditate. There wouldn't be much time before he had to leave again for Irlix, but he would be able to fit in a quick wh'ltri. He lit his meditation lamp and sat on the floor. Sanok's awareness of his surroundings, blended with his sense of time, and faded into nothingness. All of existence was in his mind. Allowing himself to travel on this sea of new reality, Sanok found himself reliving his experience on Axtis III with his friend, Ben Soma. Sanok and Ben had served together on the USS Mithrandir. After several stressful missions, Ben needed time away from his duties. Arranging leave time for them both, Sanok took his friend to Axtis for a martial arts tournament, something Ben loved. Unfortunately, the two were thrust into the middle of a murder mystery. Sanok realized that he missed his friend. Traveling from Axtis, a planet where the people that ran it believed in living without technology, like life was in wilderness times, Sanok found himself sitting in sickbay, Ben in a coma from another mission. He was reading a story to Ben, a story about a Samurai warrior, hoping it would reach deep inside his friend and draw him back to consciousness. Unfortunately, Sanok was needed elsewhere, and was transfered before his friend could awaken from his injury. The time jump anomaly struck, and Sanok and Ben had lost touch. The incident was classified, so he did not know where Ben was now. He missed his friend. Sanok's eyes opened at the sound of a loud chime. Blinking, he checked the time. He had set an alarm so he would have time to prepare to return to Irlix. Blowing out the fire in his lamp, he got up and began to prepare. Sickbay was almost devoid of people. “Hello...anywhere here?” said Matrix as he looked around. The emergency medial hologram materialized just in front of Matrix. “Yes Lieutenant, what is the nature of the medial emergency?” the EMH Mark I asked. “Or let me guess, your shoulder is bothering you. Are you in any pain, Lieutenant?” the EMH continued. “Well...yes, somewhat, but my question is whether I’m fit for duty and specifically well enough to lead the away mission I’ve just been assigned to?” replied Matrix. “Lieutenant, please come over and sit on one of the bio-beds and let me take a look at that shoulder.” requested the EMH. As Matrix made himself comfortable the EMH adjusted Matrix’s sling, pulling his arm out and testing for ease of movement. “Just relax Lieutenant, I just want to see how your range of motion is. Please tell me if you are experiencing any pain or discomfort.” “Here?” asked the EMH. Matrix shook his head. “How about now?” Matrix shook his head again. “...and now?” “Yes...doctor that hurts.” replied Matrix. “On a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the worst, what would you rate the pain you’re feeling when your arm is in its current position.” asked the EMH. “Just relax Lieutenant.” “I’d say that is a 6 or 7 doctor.” replied Matrix. “Well I’m not feeling any grinding when I’ve articulated your arm. The bio-scanner is showing that the damage was repaired nicely and is healing well. There is no internal bleeding present and the ligament and muscle damage was repaired nicely by the doctor.” said the EMH. “I can prescribe something for the pain and it will make you more comfortable, I think you might be fit enough for duty Lieutenant, but I would like to get the doctor’s input before you’re released officially.” he continued. “I’m not sure where she is at the moment.” =^= Emergency Medical Hologram to Doctor Ichijo, please report to sickbay...you have a patient waiting.=^= (Reply Ichijo) “Lieutenant, please have a seat on the bio-bed while we wait for the doctor to arrive.” said the EMH. “Thank you doctor.” replied Matrix. Under an all black uniform, he wore a suit of ablative armor. On his belt, he had two hand phasers, each with an extra energy cell, and a tricorder. Hidden in his right boot, was a knife. Goggles that could be used to provide night vision or infrared vision, depending on the setting, rounded out his repertoire. Ready to get this mission going so Starfleet personnel could be rescued and returned to their duties, Sanok went early to the transporter room, before his team was called to report. Fornix stated holding his hands out so that he could show him that the phased pistol was still on his belt. "What gives you the right to lock me up anyway?" Ben inquired. "Who are you and what do you want from me?" He hurled the bunk into the force field again and watched it flare, this time it didn't seem as bright. "I am Fornix." Fornix stated. "Please desist, I don't want you to be harmed. If you continue I will use my phased pistol to stun you through the barrier. It is very unpleasant." Fornix tapped his right hand against the handle of his pistol. "You know I could keep this up for hours." Ben goaded the guard. "Perhaps, but I would stun you before the shield collapsed." The Lieutenant responded. "You would be unconscious and would awake uncomfortable.  And I would be forced to write up a large amount of paperwork concerning your behavior. Even more than I would now."  "Neither of us win such a scenario. Wouldn't it be better to talk rather than disagree?" Ben thought of laughing again, he already had waken uncomfortable. But maybe talking would be as effective or more so then a show of force. He considered his next move very carefully. "Alright, I know you have friends comming, keep them away and I'll consider playing nice." Ben responded. "Very well. If you promise to behave I will keep the back up away from your cell. And then we can move you to another cell that you have not destroyed and I will speak to you about your situation. But if you resist, my companions will have no worries about stunning both of us to prevent your escape. And taking my gun will do you no good as it will only work for Irlixians, one of your companions already tried it. Besides my superiors would thankfully interrogate your shipmates to locate you should you escape. They are not known for their pleasant and sunny dispositions." Ben found the response almost funny, he had no real need for a weapon anyway. He had planned on close quarters combat and silent take downs during his preplanned escape attempt. The thought of others suffering because of his actions should he fail to release them wasn't a pleasnant thought, for now he would play along and resist. He actually liked the thought of having somewhere to lay down other then the floor, he was more tired then he'd been letting on. He dropped the bunk to the floor with a crash and crossed his arms across his chest. "I understand that it is most likely your duty to escape your confinement. I was a soldier in the war and was captured. I understand your thinking on this matter, but I also know that now would not be a very good time to escape? Where would you go? Where would you hide?" "What makes you think I'd leave." Ben responded. "You just informed me there are more of my people here, I'd seek them out. With enough of them freed hiding wouldn't be necessary." The sounds of approaching footsteps could be heard comming down the corridor, the cavalry had arrived. Ben watched as Fornix held up his hand to stop them. "Stay back . The human has calmed down. We will move him to another cell. If he attempts to escape stun us both, then move him to a new cell." The squad grunted in reply, Ben again felt life laughing. In such close quarters they would have to stunn everyone to be sure he had been taken down. There was the possibility that he could take most of them down in simple hand to hand combat given the chance, he might even escape without a shot fired and by the time anyone realized he was gone he could have released most of the prisoners. How many guards could there be posted here anyway, how many prisoners were being held here. Too many questions. "Please human. Do not cause us trouble. Do I have your words?" Fornix said. Ben considered his response, would it be considered dishonorable to break you word to a foe? He was taught that your word was your bond back when he had undergone his training. He had given his word then to follow certain rules, rules that now got in the way of what he wanted to do. He was also becomming annoyed at being refered to as Human all the time. "I will cause no trouble." Ben responded. "As long as you stop calling me human, my name is Ben." Ben then took several steps back into the cell before the guard had to demand he did so. He proceeded to sit crossed legged on the floor, a position that offered no hostilities and left him almost defenseless. He placed his hands on his kness and waited for the guard to drop the forcefield and enter the cell. (reply Fornix) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, Guard, Lieutenant Fornix, 1816*) The human made a strange noise as he hurled the bunk into the force field again. Fornix thought it sounded almost like a laugh. "Why don't you make me stop." Ben responded as he picked the bunk up and prepared to throw it again. "Wait please." Fornix stated holding his hands out so that he could show him that the phased pistol was still on his belt. "What gives you the right to lock me up anyway?" Ben inquired. "Who are you and what do you want from me?" He hurled the bunk into the force field again and watched it flare, this time it didn't seem as bright. "I am Fornix." Fornix stated. We will move him to another cell. If he attempts to escape stun us both, then move him to a new cell." There was a grunt of acknowledgement from the squad who readied their weapons. The security guard turned back to the Human. "Please human. Do not cause us trouble. Do I have your words?" (reply Soma) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, Guard, Lieutenant Fornix, Day 8- 1817) "I will cause no trouble." The Human responded. "As long as you stop calling me human, my name is Ben." "Ben," Fornix repeated, trying on the alien word to see how his mouth liked it. It had an unusual shape and sound and he found it to be rather pleasant. "Ben, thank you." Fornix stated. Then he reached down and keyed his radio to activate it. "Disengage security barrier for cell 18-A for prisoner transfer," he said into the device. =/= Disengaging.=/= came the reply. A moment later the barrier shimmered and disappeared. Fornix grabbed a pair of his magnetically sealed handcuffs from his belt and stepped into the cell. "Please stand Ben." He said, " and face the wall away from me. I will need to restrain you." (reply Soma) One the Human had complied, Fornix stepped forward and gently took the alien's left ram and moved it behind his back where he fastened the first of the magnetic cuffs securely in place. He then repeated the process for the left, securing the prisoner. "Thank you. Now we will leave the cell." Fornix announced. (reply Soma iyw) He led Ben out of the cell and down the hallway several dozen feet away. The other security officers were still a couple of dozen feet away, just far enough to be able to stun them before any wild charge could reach them. Fornix reached down and keyed his radio again. " re-establish barrier on 18-A and disengage barrier on 6-C" =/= Affirmative.=/= came the reply. A half second later the barrier for the new cell disengaged and Fornix gently guided Soma inside. He then removed the magnetic cuffs and backed out of the cell before calling for it to be re-established. Once the new barrier was in place, Fornix relaxed visibly and dismissed the back -up. "So Ben are you hungry?" I can have some food replicated for you." (reply Soma) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, ATAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, 1819) "Please stand Ben." He said, " and face the wall away from me. I will need to restrain you." "As you wish." Ben replied. Ben complied with the request and Fornix entered the cell and placed the restraints on him. It had taken all Ben's self control not to attack the guard once he had taken his left arm, it would have been easy to knock Fornix out but the rest of the back up was another story. He could have gotten one or two of the others in the time it took them to react, but it would have been a futile attempt in the end. "Thank you. Now we will leave the cell." Fornix announced. "I don't see where thanking me is required, I don't have much of a choice here." Ben replied. As Fornix led him from the cell Ben couldn't help but think back to the last time he'd been in confinement, the circumstances were similar but he wasn't restrained. He was treated as a guest for the most part, everyone was polite. Fornix reminded him of those people, though missguided they were only doing what they were told to do. Maybe He could gain Fornix's trust, so far his guard hadn't been hostile towards him and had also shown semi genuine concern for his well being. That could be turned to an advantage if Ben worked it the right way. Fornix keyed his radio and re-established the field on the old cell and opened the new cell, led Ben inside removed the restraints and then moved out of the cell. Fornix hadn't issued any instructions but Ben decided to play nice, he didn't move as the restraints were removed and waited until the forcefield was in place before turning to face Fornix. His guard dismissed the backup he had called for earlier and the two were now alone. "So Ben are you hungry? I can have some food replicated for you." Ben did feel somewhat hungry and thirsty and his head still ached. Fornix had offered the food but Ben wondered if his generousity would extend to pain relievers. Nothing ventured nothing gained. "A sandwich and some coffe would be appreciated." Ben responded deciding against the hunger strike this time. Ben placed a hand to his head as he sat back on the bunk in the cell. "Maybe some ibuprofine or acetometiphine if it isn't to much trouble." He added. (reply Fornix) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, Guard, Lieutenant Fornix, Day 8-1820) "A sandwich and some coffee would be appreciated." Ben responded. Fornix just looked at him with a confused look on his face. "What sort of food is this sanwich and kawfee?" he asked attempting to use the federation words that Ben had used. "Maybe some ibuprofen or acetometiphine if it isn't to much trouble." He added. "And these things also, I do not know about." (reply Ben) "A stimulant drink I can provide as well as a piece of meat wedged between two slices of local bread." Fornix responded with a broad smile. I have a program for pain killers that should be compatible with your physiology. " "Computer activate Emergency Medical Hologram in cell 6-C" Fornix intoned obviously very happy to be able to say the entire phrase in Federation. The EMH program shimmered to life. "Please state the nature of your medical emergency." It intoned in it's normal programmed litany. Fornix pointed to Ben. "He is in need of pain killers." The EMH turned around and regarded Ben Soma. "What seems to be the problem Lieutenant?" he asked. "While the medical program helps you. I will go and replicate your meal." Fornix intoned and then left. (reply Soma) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, ATAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma-1822) This time Ben did laugh, not because what Fornix said was funny but because with all this technology they had his people had never heard of a sandwich or coffee. Ben considered his response carefully, he didn't want to offend Fornix because he may still be persuaded to help. The pain killers were understandable enough, Ben had called them by thier "Earth names" anyone outside of the Federation would no doubt be a little confused. "A sandwich is made by placing some form of meat between a couple slices of bread, coffee is an organic suspesion made from mixing water and the dust of a certain bean together." Ben explained. "The coffee is a form of stimulant that momentarily heightens ones alertness and can help to focus concentration." He allowed Fornix a few moments to absorbe what he said before continuing. "Acetometahine and Ibuprofin are simple pain releif medications, they have multiple aplications." "A stimulant drink I can provide as well as a piece of meat wedged between two slices of local bread." Fornix responded with a broad smile. I have a program for pain killers that should be compatible with your physiology. " ~It may not be coffee but it might do the trick, can't wait to see what he brings back for a sandwich~ "Computer activate Emergency Medical Hologram in cell 6-C" Fornix intoned obviously very happy to be able to say the entire phrase in Federation. The EMH turned around and regarded Ben Soma. "What seems to be the problem Lieutenant?" he asked. "While the medical program helps you. I will go and replicate your meal." Fornix intoned and then left. Ben looked at the Mark I EMH in near astonishment, what was it doing here and how did it get here? Ben watched Fornix leave and listened to his fading footsteps, when he was certain no one could hear he asked. "What are you doing here Doc." Then he remembered the reports of the Mark I's terrible beside manner. "Other then asking what my problem is." (reply EMH) "How did you get here? What happened to your ship?" Ben wanted answers, Fornix had stated there were others here like him but now it seems his people were incorporating Starfleet technology into thiers and possibly reverse engineering other technology stolen from a Starfleet ship. He wasn't sure what the EMH knew but he was going to find out if Fornix gave him enough time. (reply EMH) "Where am I?" Ben inquired. (reply EMH) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, EMH Mark I, Day 8-1823) Life for a holographic construct was anything but interesting while they weren't being called upon for some important task. As such, the doctor had remained in suspension more or less consistently for the last 28.678521457836555214 years. His limited access to two sites were far from the freedoms he had experienced when summoned aboard the Medea. In fact, after the crash, he had been summoned exactly 28 times before today, and all of those were in a much different location. "Please state the nature of your medical emergency." He intoned as he materialized, not in the well-appointed office as he'd expected but in a cell of some sort instead. A native Irlixian named Fornix pointed behind the doctor and explained. "He is in need of pain killers." The EMH turned around and regarded an individual standing there. He was in a Starfleet uniform, fundamentally the same as those he recognized, but the rank pips seemed slightly different. "What seems to be the problem Lieutenant?" he asked. "While the medical program helps you. I will go and replicate your meal." the Irlixian stated and then promptly left. "What are you doing here Doc? " The lieutenant answered, "Other then asking what my problem is?" The EMH frowned before answering. "It seems I am attempting to practice medicine, Lieutenant. Please be seated, there on the bunk and describe your symptoms." "How did you get here? What happened to your ship?" The man continued, still not cooperating. The Doctor sighed as it created a holographic version of a medical tricorder. He began some scans. "Lieutenant, please can we focus a little? I assure you that I will be glad to answer your annoyingly persistent questions, once I've ascertained your medical condition." The EMH sighed before continuing, "Now, from the top, Lieutenant. What is it that you are experiencing?" "Where am I?" Ben inquired. "Spatial disorientation, possible temporal memory loss, inability to focus..." The EMH pronounced, then made a show of reviewing his tricorder. "It seems that you have a mild concussion lieutenant, and an abnormally high stubborn streak. While I can treat you for the former, I'm afraid the latter is... untreatable." (reply Soma) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, ATAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma-1825) ~Smug, sharp as a tack this one. No wonder they were pulled from service~ "Spatial disorientation, possible temporal memory loss, inability to focus..." The EMH pronounced, then made a show of reviewing his tricorder. "It seems that you have a mild concussion lieutenant, and an abnormally high stubborn streak. While I can treat you for the former, I'm afraid the latter is... untreatable." Ben resisted the urge to slug the holographic Doctor on the grounds that there was no benefit to it, his fist would simply pass through the EMH and he would derive no satisfaction from it. "Forget the diagnosis for now Doc. How long have you been here and what can you tell me about this facility." (reply EMH) "Really, that long and you have next to no information to offer." Ben replied. (reply EMH iyw) He had hoped the EMH had been used a little more often and had a little more information to offer, now he did need to try and enlist Fornix's help. He was sure that sooner or later someone would come to get him out of here, he was hoping sooner rather then later. Looking back at the Doc he said, "Your tied into thier system, is there anyway you might be able to get a general idea as the location of the other prisoners and the layout of this facility." Ben asked. He then put his hand up to stop any retort from the Mark I. "Before you say your a Doctor and not a travel agent I want to remind you that you are also programed as a Starfleet officer, it's our duty to learn what we can about our surroundings and devise some kind of escape if possible." Ben knew dealing with the antiquated EMH wasn't going to be an easy prospect. It was right about one thing, Ben did have a stuborn streak. That streak was the result of situations similar to this. He didn't enjoy being confined, and it didn't exactly bring out his best side. (reply EMH) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, EMH Mark I, Day 8-1826) The EMH watched smugly as the Lieutenant tightened the fingers of his right hand into a fist as if contemplating violence. "Forget the diagnosis for now Doc. How long have you been here and what can you tell me about this facility?" The EMH raised a single eyebrow and then dismissed his holographic tricorder. "I have been here for exactly three minutes and twenty three, twenty-four, twenty fine..." Something in the Lieutenant's body language suggested that he was becoming irritated. The man's blood pressure was rising and he was beginning to redden slightly. "I see." The EMH continued. "You mean here as in the facility not as in here the cell. You should have been more specific Lieutenant. I have been in this facility 28.67 standard years." "If my internal chronometer is functioning properly I was first initiated outside the Medea's computer core on Stardate 2385.06.21 at time index 0315." "I know nothing of this current facility. All my activations have been in one of two places prior to this. The first was a science lab in this complex, the other was in an office belonging to Lieutenant Nakamura." "Really? That long and you have next to no information to offer." Ben replied. "Yes well," the doctor replied. "One finds it difficult to gather information when one is deactivated. That would be like me asking you to describe everything happening around your body after you'd died, lieutenant." "You're tied into their system, is there anyway you might be able to get a general idea to the location of the other prisoners and the layout of this facility." The EMH started to speak before he was rudely interrupted by the Lieutenant again. "Before you say you're a Doctor and not a travel agent I want to remind you that you are also programmed as a Starfleet officer, it's our duty to learn what we can about our surroundings and devise some kind of escape if possible." "I don't have those sorts of accesses, lieutenant. And even if I did, my programming has been considerably altered from it's original parameters. Lieutenant Nakamura put certain safety precautions in place to limit my access and to insure that I would be unable to work outside my parameters." "But your earlier assessment was correct." (reply Soma) "I am not a travel agent." The doctor replied smugly. (reply Soma) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, ATAC/SECLt. jg Ben Soma,1828) "But your earlier assessment was correct." The EMH stated. "And how's that Doc?" Ben engiured. "I am not a travel agent." The doctor replied smugly. "You don't say." Ben replied just as smugly. He woundered just what changes had been made to the Doc's programming and if he could still be useful. What information could he gather if he were allowed to examine the rest of the prisoners, would his base programming still be functional. Ben assumed they didn't make any changes to diagnostic subroutines or those regarding treatment, he just hoped they had changed his sense of humour and personality a little. "Alright Doc." Ben began. "A battle of wits isn't going to get us anywhere." (reply EMH iyw) "Now what I would like for you to is request to examine the other prisoners when Fornix returns. Say your concerned about their well being based on what you saw of me. A concussion isn't something one inflicts on oneself, say you are concerned about the treatment of the prisoners." (reply EMH) "Gather what ever information you can about the layout and the number of prisoners and thier condition. Then you'll need to report that information back to me." Ben said. "Oh, try to scan the area to see how many guards there are." (reply EMH) "Don't worry, I'll come up with a reason to get you back here later." Ben replied. He'd trip and crack his skull open if he had to, not knowing anything and being caged up like an animal wasn't Ben's idea of serenity. He wanted to know what he was dealing with so when the time came he could have a plan worked out that would minimise the chances of injury and increase the odds of escape. He still considered trying to convice Fornix to help him in an escape attempt, all it would take is some simple conversation and a push or two in the right direction. (reply EMH) (posted by Milo Young) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, EMH Mark I, Day 8-1829) "I am not a travel agent." The doctor replied smugly. "You don't say." Ben replied just as smugly. "Alright Doc." Ben began. "A battle of wits isn't going to get us anywhere." "You are correct ,of course. Besides it isn't honorable for me to fight such a battle with an unarmed man." The Doctor quipped. "Now what I would like for you to is request to examine the other prisoners when Fronix returns. Say your concerned about their well-being based on what you saw of me. A concussion isn't something one inflicts on oneself, say you are concerned about the treatment of the prisoners." The doctor started to balk, but realized that the lieutenant had a point. "I can see your point, lieutenant. prisoner treatment is a concern. Beyond asking to see the other prisoners, what else should I be doing?" "Gather what ever information you can about the layout and the number of prisoners and their condition. Then you'll need to report that information back to me." Ben said. "Oh, try to scan the area to see how many guards there are." "And how exactly do I override my programming to report back to you?" The doctor asked. "Don't worry, I'll come up with a reason to get you back here later." Ben replied. The doctor looked at him. "If I may. I do have a question for you lieutenant." He finally stated. "It is obvious that you are not a member of the Medea crew, or I would have access to your medical records. As it is I don't even know your name. What ship did you come from? And I dare ask, how did you get here?" (reply Soma) The sound of footsteps sounded from the hallway and the doctor quickly replicated an air hypo loaded with a mild pain killer. He pressed it against the crook of Soma's neck just as the Irlixian guard stepped in front of the door. He was pushing some sort of small wheeled device, which looked almost like a miniature transporter platform on wheels. On top of the platform was a small plate and a cup. The plate held a roughly hewn sandwich while the cup held some sort of greenish liquid which was warmed than room temperature. Fronix tapped a few buttons on a small embedded console on the device and the food tray and cup of drink dematerialized from the device's top and reassembled just inside the barrier. "You're sanwich and stimulant drink." he announced as he pushed the small device out of sight behind a nearby wall. "Excuse me." the doctor said after forcing his eyes away from the sorry excuse for food. "But I would like to request that you allow me to conduct examinations of the other prisoners. This prisoner shows signs of rough treatment, which could have been life threatening." Fronix looked at the holographic doctor before replying simply, "no" "I see," the doctor stated almost defeated, before he came up with another direction. "Then I won't be able to tell if they are carrying any deadly diseases that pose a risk to you and your fellow guards. I guess you'll just have to take your chances." "Diseases?" Fronix asked, obviously interested. "Yes. diseases. Humans especially are known to carry a large number of viral and microbial diseases and infections which have been known to cause sterilization in those that contract it." "What?" Fronix said in surprise. "But I wouldn't worry, there's a slim chance that you'll be fine provided that you never came in contact with the human in any way. You're safe for certain if you avoided touching him. I wouldn't worry about it." "Wait. I did touch him though." Fronix stated. "I see. Well I'll have to conduct a complete scan of the prisoners first to identify any particular strains that may be present, before attempting to determine if any of the guards have contracted anything." "But..." "Have it your way." the doctor pressed. "I can't force treatment upon you. Besides you'll known in a few weeks when your, well... parts start to wither up and fall off." Fronix's eyes got very big then and the doctor maintained his normally disinterested veneer without much difficulty. "Okay, you can visit the prisoners, but when you get ready to scan the guards, you have to promise to start with me." Fronix demanded. The doctor rolled his eyes, sighed and said, "Of course. Now if you'll excuse me." Fronix nodded as the doctor dematerialized. The guard's eyes turned towards Ben then. "You don't HAVE anything like that do you?" he asked. (reply Soma) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, ATAC/SEC Lt. jg Ben Soma, Day 8-1830) "It is obvious that you are not a member of the Medea crew, or I would have access to your medical records. As it is I don't even know your name. What ship did you come from? And I dare ask, how did you get here?" "No Doc, I'm not from the Medea." Ben responded. "My name is Ben Soma. I was posted to the USS Mithrandir, but I'm on leave for personal reasons. As to how I got here, I don't actualy have a reply for that. The last thing I remember is hearing the proximity alert on my shuttle, then it shock and I struck my head on the console. When I woke up I found myself here." Before the EMH could respond the sound of approaching footsteps could be heard comming down the corridor. The Doc produced a hypo and pressed it to Ben's neck just as Fornix reached the cell pushing a cart with a crude sandwich and a mug of some steaming liquid on it. Fornix tapped a few controls and the plate and mug disappeared from the cart and reappeared inside the cell, then the guard pushed his cart out of sight. "You're sanwich and stimulant drink." Fornix stated. Ben moved to pick the sandwich and drink off the floor as the Doctor began to demand access to the other prisoners which Fornix immediately reply no to. The Doc then went into a rant about human diseases and how they could be passed on by mere touch and as long as no one touched the prisoners they'd be ok. Fonix then stated he had touched Ben and reluctantly agreed to the Doc's demand stating he was to be the first one to be treated. As the Doc dematerialized Fornix looked at him and said. "You don't HAVE anything like that do you?" Ben took a bite of his sandwich, considered the Doc's proformance and fought back the urge to laugh. He chased the sandwich down with a swallow of coffee, it was bitter but drinkable. He looked up at Fornix and said, "I'm no Xenobiologist Fornix, if the Doc thinks I might have passed something to you he might be right. Better to give him a little leway and let him fully examine all the prisoners just incase." Ben could almost see the colours changing on the guards face, the Doc had put a bit of a scare into him. Ben decided to press the matter a little further. "We could be carrying any number of pathogens that could be harmful, even fatal, if you contract them." Ben explained. "God only knows what could happen." Ben fought back a smile as he decided to tell a small tale of his own experience contracting an alien disease. "When I was a kid I contracted Andorian shingles." He stated taking another bite and swallow. "I don't know what was worse, the pain or having my eyes bleed. Spent three weeks in the med ward in isolation, thought I was going to die. Pain killers barely numbed the pain and nothing stopped the bleeding, don't remeber how many transfusions I got or how much synthetic plasma they pumped into me to keep me breathing." Ben slowly finished his sandwich as Fornix pondered what he may have been exposed to when he touched Ben inorder to transfer him to the new cell. "We could be carrying any number of pathogens that could be harmful, even fatal, if you contract them." Ben explained. "God only knows what could happen." Fornix balked as the Human began to regale him to the occurrence of one such unpleasant disease. "When I was a kid I contracted Andorian shingles." Ben stated taking another bite and swallow. "That sounds... Absolutely Abyssal" the guard responded, losing his appetite for conversation with the alien. "Perhaps I should leave you to your meal. Maybe I should go wash my hands or something." (reply Soma) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, ATAC/SEC Lt' jg Ben Soma-1834) "That sounds... Absolutely Abyssal" the guard responded, losing his appetite for conversation with the alien. "Perhaps I should leave you to your meal. Maybe I should go wash my hands or something." Ben regarded Fornix for a moment before speaking, he was starting to have a little fun with the guard and the Doc had set it all up. Maybe the Mark I wasn;t quite so bad after all, it did have some good points. "Fornix," Ben began, "if I had passed anything to you I doubt washing your hands would help you any. We're not exactly talking about the common cold here. Cleanliness will not prevent anything from being passed on. Years ago on my home planet they had STD's. Those diseases were passed on no matter how clean the individual kept themselves. The only protection you could have would be in the form of a hazmat suit." Ben watched the guard and found it enjoyable to watch his reaction, how is it that he was the one in confinement and the guard was the one who was suffering. "I could have passed something on to you simply by breathing on you." Before the poor fellow got to the point of throwing up or running for his life Ben added. "I'm sure the EMH will be able to stop any contamination before any permanent damage can occur." Ben smiled then. "If you let him that is. I'm sure your superiors will question you about letting him have free rein for a while, they might even threaten you with confinement yourself. It was a risk letting him go, but it was the right decision. Don't get me wrong, the benefits outweight the risks in this case. After all he is only a hologram, and a Doctor at that. He couldn't harm a fly, it goes against his programming." Before Fornix could rethink the wiseness of giving into the Doctors demands Ben decided to work on his plan a little. "Tell me Fornix, do you enjoy your job? Do you derive satisfaction from excerting power over others? Does watching others suffer bring you comfort?" Ben waited for the guard to respond, giving him something to think about other then diseases and STD's might help him a bit. (reply Fornix) (posted by Milo Young)  --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Seliya facility, Holding Block, Guard, Lieutenant Fornix, Day 8-1835) "Tell me Fornix, do you enjoy your job? Do you derive satisfaction from exerting power over others? Does watching others suffer bring you comfort?" Ben asked. Fornix frowned. "I'm not one of those types that enjoy causing pain or discomfort. I'm a soldier, just doing my duty." He replied. "If your people hadn't invaded our space, we wouldn't be having this conversation." Fornix stated, "In fact, I'd probably be trying to get you drunk and talking about women, except after what I just heard, the latter may not be such a good idea." "As for my Job, " Fornix shrugged in a very human gesture, "Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. But that's just the way it goes sometimes. And what about you Ben, what exactly is your job in your culture? And do you enjoy it?"
