The vast majority of the last three months had been spent in his ready room reviewing readiness and repair reports, rather than sitting in his command chair exploring the galaxy. Soon, he knew, that would be over and the Rosenante would be in action, doing what she did best, exploring the galaxy and pushing the frontiers of knowledge. A smile crossed his face as he glanced over to a small container that contained a few special items. The smile grew as he considered them and then he made a decision. With a quick tap, he tapped his commbadge, which replied with a merry little chirp. "Salid to all Department heads and Assistant Department heads. There will be a senior staff briefing at 0900 hours in the observation lounge, attendance is mandatory. Salid out." --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Bridge - COPS Lt Tom Jackson, Day 90 - 0816) Tom was manning the main OPS station on the bridge. Captain Salid's annoucnment diverted his attention from the task of preparing his report to the FO. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante – Deck 28 – ACEO Lt. T’Kron - 0817) T”Kron checked the Antimatter Storage again and after consulting the gauges, he nodded to Ensign Kowalski and Crewman Helsinki. “The containment is adequate and running at acceptable levels with little variance. It has now been inspected.” He marked it off on his PADD. The two of them looked at each other and sighed with almost imperceptible relief. Just then T’Kron’s commbadge chirped. =/\= Salid to all Department heads and Assistant Department heads. He had just come off a week of night shifts and was looking forward to a good day’s sleep. “Ow that is just not fair.” He through the bed sheets off him and staggered to the shower. I’ll contact you when I can.” Chance said “We love you to boy. Stay out of trouble” Ed said. “Bye-Bye sweety.” Margaret said before ending the transmission. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge- CO Captain Ahmed Ibn Salid, Day 90- 0835) The captain strode into the observation lounge with a spring in his step. He was the first to arrive and so he placed the boxes down at the end of the table where he normally sat before moving to the replicator to make himself a cup of Turkish coffee. Still smiling at the knowledge that the ship would be ready for launch in just a couple more days, he moved over to the large windows and watched as the work bees and Engineers in EV suits buzzed around the ship like a swarm of bees around their hive. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - 2O/CTAC Lieutenant T'Larah Sullivan - 0840) This being only days before the Rosenante was to be ready for their next mission, T'Larah didn't want to start off her mission back to one hundred percent, on the wrong foot. So she showed to the Observation lounge early. As she stepped over the threshold for the first time in what seemed like an eternity, she collected her self and nodded to each of the early meeting goers. She sat down with her PADD and waited for a conversation or the briefing to begin. (Reply any Present, room for more) Some time went by and the observation lounge filled up quickly. Briefly after everyone's arrival the Captain started the meeting. "God morning Everyone." he said, opening the meeting formally. "As you all know it's been a long and hard three months to get the Rosenante restored and ready for action. Earlier this morning I received the yard Engineer's reports and it looks like this long repair job is finally coming to an end. The Yard Chief believes that all the last of the repairs will be completed with in the next 24 to 48 hours. once that's finished, we have been authorized to disengage from the repair bay to make room for the USS Delaware which will be undergoing a classification refit." "I will need all departments to report readiness for departure no later than tomorrow night at 2400 hours. I want all crew for all departments recalled and back on board no later than 1700 hours tomorrow night and all ship's stores inspected and replenished by 2200 hours." "Reports will be on the first officer's desk no later than 0800 hours on Stardate 2408.07.21. Commander Caskie will brief me on the ship's readiness status and condition no later than 1130 hours on that date." ~Tactical is already prepared, the report can be on her desk directly after this meeting. Just a few more people finishing up their leave and we will be green in shifts.~ she thought. "Now that that point of business is finished, it's time to move on to another matter of importance." He said as he stood. "Commander Caskie, front and center." Ahmed called. Once the First Officer was standing before him he smiled and continued. "Commander, in light of your excellent attention to detail and your dedication to the safety and well being of this ship and her crew, and for exemplary performance under extremely hazardous circumstances, I hereby promote you to the rank of full commander, with all the duties, privileges and responsibilities associated with your new rank." Ahmed reached up and removed the hollow pip from Caskie's collar and replaced it with a solid one. "Congratulations, Commander, you've earned it." (reply Commander Caskie) Once the newly appointed Cmdr. had resumed her seat, The Captain continued. "Lieutenant Sullivan, front and center." T'Larah rose smartly and executed appropriate facing movements and marching at a half step until she was posted where the Captain indicated. "I know that things have been challenging for you lieutenant, but I also know that you are an exemplary officer. Star Fleet command agrees with my sentiment wholeheartedly, so it is my honor to award you the Starfleet Double cross for Sacrifice of your own life during the Bastion fire fight which saved the Life of Lieutenant Chance Raschen from otherwise certain death. it is not very often that this award can be presented to the recipient as it's very nature is normally given posthumously. I am very pleased to be able to present it to you today." Captain Salid reached down and picked up the box containing the medal and opened the box, displaying it for Sullivan. "wear it with pride." he stated as he closed the box and handed it to her. "Thank you, Most people have to play the hand they're dealt, but it seems I have been dealt another hand. I am proud to get the chance to serve with you all again." she said and tucked the small replicated mahogany box under her sleeve crisply. She was about to move out, but the CO unexpectedly continued. "In addition, It is also my honor to promote you to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. This is in honor for the continuing high level of performance and the unfailing completion of your duties despite whatever difficulties that may come. I also present you with the privileges, responsibilities and duties of your new rank." Ahmed reached down and picked up the single hollow pip from the box sitting on the table and added it to Sullivan's lapel. "Congratulations commander Sullivan." "This is unexpected." she stated honestly. "Thank you, sir, I will not disappoint you, or any of you." she said to the assembled officers. She moved out smartly and continued to her seat, a few grams heavier. (Reply Any) (Posted by Todd) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Ready Room- FO - Lt Cmdr - Josh Caskie - Day 90- 0850) Having fed her growing menagerie and after taking Luadhas for a walk on one of the holodecks Josh had settled the dog in her basket in the FO's office. Gather up all the padds she needed she had made her way to the Ready Room. Smiling and greeting the Captain she had requested her usual cup of Lapsang Suchong from the replicator and sitting down beside him she had began to work her way through her padds until the room had filled with the rest of the Senior Staff. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - ACEO - Ensign (jg) Mitena Rixx - Day 90 - 0852) Mitena had left her post in engineering two minutes earlier then she thought she needed to. She didn't want to be late to her first staff meeting as an assistant department head. In her prior posting she'd only ever got to hear the news from the staff meetings second hand. Even though it was technically 'work' she felt very happy to be attending. She smiled at the other officers as she came into the Observation Lounge. People had already begun taking their seats and she followed their example. Finding a place to sit, she took out her PADD and reviewed some of the notes she'd made from the morning's checklist. Once the meeting had started, she put away the PADD and listened attentively to the Captain as he passed out service awards and promotions, glad to be able to finally put names she'd heard with faces. As the meeting began breaking up, Mitena returned her attention for a moment to her PADD and noted the Captain's expectation of having the readiness reports by tomorrow at 2400. (reply none) (posted by Ruby) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante – Chief Counselor’s office – Lt. (jg) Jon Nayati – 0855) Jon was reviewing the psychological reports by the two ACCONS that had taken up much of his clinical duties since he had been made the Rose’s 30. Both his ACCOUNS had done well with those various PTSD issues related to the stressful confine in the monstrous Harvester barely four months ago. Both the Terran Hensley and empathic Beta Zed, Krisa had counseled crew members both individually and in groups. Krisa had been better with individuals but the logical and clinically trained Hensley had done better in the group shops he’d undertaken. Together Jon’s two ACCOUNS had produced some really spectacular reversals related to PSTD symptoms related to the crew’s terrible incarceration in the monolithic Harvester. Jon had just finished off the preliminary drafts for letters of commendation for Ensigns Andre Hensley and Krisa when Captain Salid’s commanding voice arrested his full attention. =^=Salid to all Department heads and Assistant Department heads. Since she had been assigned to make the duty rotation shift by Lt. Raschen, V’Shera assumed she would be allowed to attend the staff meeting. Checking the duty roster for a tactical officer for a temporary duty replacement, V’Shera found an appropriate name for the job. ~Ensign Steven Belgrave, native of Mars Colony II, fresh out of Terran Star Fleet Academy. The Rose was his first ship. Fortunately, he missed out on all the fun we had inside the damnable Harvester.~ Tapping her commbadge, V’Shera spoke. “Ensign Belgrave, V ‘Shera here.” The officer’s responses were crisp and immediate. =^= Ensign Belgrave here. What are your orders, Sir?=^= “You will replace me on Sensors while I attend a mandatory meeting called by our captain at 0900. You are to relieve me until that meeting concludes, Ensign.” =^= Understood, Ensign V’Shera. I should be there in two minutes. Belgrave out.=^= “Very good, Mister Belgrave, V’Shera out.” (Any on the Bridge, IYW) By the time the cross talk between she and Belgrave was completed, V’Shera heard Captain Salid’s footsteps approaching the observation lounge door. A moment later there a soft “whoosh’ as the observation lounge door opened and then closed again. No more than a minute after Captain Salid had stepped into the observation lounge than V’Shera’s keen hearing picked up the sounds of the bridge door opening. ~That should be Ensign Belgrave right on time, as usual. Very good for a human.~ V’Shera turned to face him. For a Terran he was shorter than her. Ensign Belgrave had blond hair, cut to regulation length, hard blue eyes and a thin lipped mouth. He would have been handsome but there was a durable quality in the craggy lines of his face. He was young, but V’Shera thought that he had good potential as a tactical officer. ~All he needed was a little seasoning, if the seasoning didn’t get him killed, of course~ “Ensign V’Shera, I am hereby relieving you of sensor duty. Do you have anything to report?” Ensign Belgrave asked formally. “Sensors are functioning at optimal capacity. There is nothing to report since we are in Geneva space dock. I am now transferring my post to you Ensign Belgrave. I will return at the conclusion of the captain’s meeting.” Stepping to one side, V’Shera did a smart about face and headed toward the observation lounge. A minute later V’Shera entered the observation lounge. She nodded to Captain Salid, found a seat appropriate to her lesser rank, sat down and waited for the rest of the large room to fill up. (reply Sullivan) Ahmed waited for Sullivan to resume her seat, when he called the next officer up. "Lieutenant Chance Raschen, front and center." Once Raschen had reported, Ahmed continued. "You are hereby awarded the Ribbon of Sacrifice in recognition of the injuries that you have sustained in the Service of the United Federation of Planets." Ahmed reached down and picked up a medal display case, which he then opened and displayed for Raschen. (reply Raschen) "Additionally, It is my honor and privilege to recognize your continuing contributions to this ship and her crew. Your expertise and insight have proven an invaluable tool and you have shown repeated good judgment and skill in the execution of your duties. Therefore in light of your desire to continue to outperform beyond your current rank, I hereby promote you to the rank of full Lieutenant, along with the responsibilities duties and privileges associated with your new rank." (reply Raschen) Ahmed reached up and removed the hollow pip from Chance's collar and replaced it with a solid gold pip. "Congratulations Lieutenant" (reply Raschen) Ahmed looked up at his assembled officers. "There are two other awards that are a bit more difficult to pass out now, as they are both granted to persons that are no longer with us. "During our last mission, Ensign Dorian weaver sacrificed his life in a successful effort to destroy a Hur'q transport inhibitor. His selfless action allowed the recovery of injured personnel as well as the arrival of security reinforcements and prevented the additional loss of life. In honor of his sacrifice, Starfleet command has issued him the Star of Hope." Ahmed reached down and picked up the display case. He opened it, displaying it to the officers assembled. "This medal will be sent to his parents, who have survived him, along with a letter of gratitude that I have written on behalf of the ship's crew." He closed the box and set it back down on the table. He picked up two additional boxes. "On Stardate 2391.04.19, the USS Epiphany went missing with all hands. Starfleet Command recognizes the dangers that all Starfleet crews face when striving to expand the knowledge of the United federation of planets. A thorough review of the logs that we recovered, revealed a few acts of selfless sacrifice including the difficult circumstances that members of that ship's crew had to face on a daily basis. As a result several members of that ship's crew have been decorated with various medals. On Stardate 2396.11.16, Elements of the Epiphany's crew rose up in mutiny against their captain. During this act, several members of the ship's crew who attempted to put down the mutiny were killed. Among them was Lieutenant Junior Grade Donald Caskie." Ahmed stepped over to Jennifer's position and held them out to her. "Commander Caskie." Ahmed said simply, "On behalf of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet Command, I am honored to present to Lieutenant Donald Caskie, the Cross of Fire and the Star of Hope. his dedication to his duty reminds us of our own. Please accept these on his behalf." (reply Caskie) Once she had taken the awards, Ahmed returned to his seat and looked back up at the assembled crew. "Does anyone have anything else to add before this meetings is adjourned?" (reply All Department Chiefs & Assistants) Daniel Greene --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Observation Lounge- COPS Lt Tom Jackson, Day 90- 0904) Tom sat and watched as the CO opened the meeting. The most touching moment was the awards to Cmdr Caskie's late husband Donald. Tom and Robbie's reports were on their way to the FO and CO. He didn't have anything to add and remained silent when the Captain asked if there was anything else. (reply: None) (posted by: Bill West) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Observation Lounge - FO - Lt Cmdr - Josh Caskie - Day 90 - 0905) Josh listened as the Captain opened the meeting and took notes as he began to detail their newest repair updates and their schedule for vacating the repair bay. Josh already knew that the Captain would be promoting people since she had already noticed the boxes sitting on the table beside him. However his first words surprised her. "Commander Caskie, front and center." Standing up she shot at glance at him. Commander, in light of your excellent attention to detail and your dedication to the safety and well being of this ship and her crew, and for exemplary performance under extremely hazardous circumstances, I hereby promote you to the rank of full commander, with all the duties, privileges and responsibilities associated with your new rank." As he changed her last half pip to a full one, Josh simply thought to herself that she really did not deserve this. As far a she was concerned the entire last mission had been a nightmare almost from start to finish and the reason that it had finished as well as it did had very little to do with anything that she, personally had done. Knowing that some comment was expected of her she arranged her face into a smile and thanked the Captain. Sitting down again was a relief and as the Captain called Lt Sullivan forward Josh smiled. Here indeed was someone who deserved recognition for their effort. Josh agreed wholeheartedly with the medal that the Lt had been awarded. Normally it was only awarded to those who died sacrificing themselves in battle for their shipmates and Josh wondered if T'Larah would appreciate the irony of this. Josh thought that knowing T'Larah she probably would. Josh also smiled and applauded when T'Larah was promoted to Lt Commander, knowing the promotion well deserved. Glancing quickly up at the Captain she noticed that he was enjoying himself, and, to be honest, why should he not. There was always a huge down side to being a Captain that probably only the Command Staff saw. Handing out medals and promotions was probably one of the better things he got to do. As T'Larah sat down Rachen was picked as the next victim and as the Captain awarded him both his medal and his promotion Josh nodded in agreement and applauded. The promotions Josh thought were obviously all done with but there were still three boxes sitting on the table and eventually the Captain looked up and regarded them all. "This medal will be sent to his parents, who have survived him, along with a letter of gratitude that I have written on behalf of the ship's crew." He closed the box and set it back down on the table. Josh immediately began the applause since she knew that had it not been for Weaver neither she nor the away team she was responsible for would have probably made it out of the Bastion alive. She had already composed her own letter to his parents explaining his actions in general terms and informing them that their son had not only saved her life but a great many others too. Finally the Captain picked up the last two boxes and Josh knew that the meeting was finally drawing to a close. During this act, several members of the ship's crew who attempted to put down the mutiny were killed. Among them was Lieutenant Junior Grade Donald Caskie." Ahmed stepped over to Jennifer's position and held out the two remaining medals to her. "Commander Caskie. On behalf of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet Command, I am honored to present to Lieutenant Donald Caskie, the Cross of Fire and the Star of Hope. his dedication to his duty reminds us of our own. Please accept these on his behalf." Taken aback Josh got to her feet once again. Reaching out and taking the medals from the Captain Josh smiled at him with her eyes full. "Thank you Sir. I think I will send one to Iain and one to Donald's parents. That is where they will probably be most appreciated." Since a good number of officers had arrived earlier, Jon took a seat at the back of the mostly filled lounge. Jon barely had time to sit down before Captain Salid began to speak. "God morning everyone," Captain Salid said. ”As you all know it's been a long and hard three months to get the Rosenante restored and ready for action. Star Base life eventually made an active star ship’s crew soft, bored and restless. It was time for the Rose to move out again.~ Captain Salid continued, "I will need all departments to report readiness for departure no later than tomorrow night at 2400 hours. Fortunately Jon had had the fore sight to keep continual up dates of both his duties as both 30 and CCOUNS. The time table set down by Captain Salid would work no hardship on Jon. As Captain Salid moved on to the promotion and decoration part of the meeting, Jon sit back and relaxed. In light of his unexpected illness in the latter half of the Harvester escape, Jon was sure he wouldn’t be receiving any accolades today. (jg) Jon Nayati – 0909) His mind taken off the idea that he was going receive any kind award or promotion, Jon used the opportunity to pay more attention to those officers in his line of sight. Besides those officers Jon knew were scheduled for promotions and awards, there were also junior officers there that Jon didn’t except to see. Among those present were ensigns Sam Lopez, V’Shera and Martina Rixx. Of the three ensigns only Sam Lopez was the one Jon hadn’t met. He only had a brief acquaintance Ensign Rixx, whom he had met at Lt. Jackson’s party around a month ago. V’Shera had been on the Rose longer than he had, but Jon hadn’t had any opportunity to talk with her. From watching her killing Hur’q on the Rose and the Bastion, Jon knew that V’Shera was a formidable fighter. However, other than doing her duties and spending a lot of time in holodeck combat training, V’Shera didn’t seem socialize much those with outside her duty station. She wasn’t even too ‘close’ with her fellow Vulcans on the Rose. Lt. Sullivan was the only Vulcan V’Shera was reported have bonded with she transferred to the Rose. That was something that might merit a little further investigation,~ Jon thought to himself. While Jon was thinking about seeing V’Shera and all the rest, Lt Commander Caskie received her commendation award. Lt. Sullivan was up next. Salid spoke to T’Larah and the ship’s company. Sullivan were also promoted in rank as well. Both XO Caskie and Lt Sullivan seemed surprised by their promotions. Listening to Captain Salid talk about Lt. Sullivan being returned from the dead, twice, got Jon to thinking about the half Vulcan officer from a therapeutic point of view. Before she perished, Lt. Sullivan had transferred her soul, her Katra, to Lt. Raschen. Then she had been resurrected as a new Kobali, by the incredible neurobiological sciences of the Kobali themselves. Then she had been genetically reconfigured to her former half Vulcan body by the Kobali, but that T’Larah was then without her Katra. Without her Katra, Vulcans believed that T’Larah was without her soul. (The Kobali reanimators believed just opposite.) ~But if T’Larah was without a soul what kind of living being was she? Was a soul something beyond memories, past learning and personality? How many new memories would it to grow a new soul? (If a new soul could be grown at all?) Then she and Lt. Raschen had gone to Vulcan and, according to reports, where T’Larah had had her Katra restored her . Near death experiences were often exceedingly traumatic to those who had experienced them. Lt. Sullivan had survived an actual death experience, thanks to the Kobali scientists and then, to his of thinking, died again. T’Larah had been restored to having her original Vulcan body. That was a lot of physical and psychological trauma for anyone’s mind to endure, even a half Vulcan mind. Professionally, it might a wise idea to see T’Larah professionally, to access her continued fitness for duty. It might also be a good idea to see Lt. Raschen, as well. ~After all, he been carrying Lt. Sullivan’s powerful Vulcan Katra since she had murdered on the Bastion. Maybe his own mental integrity had been compromised because of the long time he had been forced to carry the new Lt. Commander’s soul? Could Sullivan/’s Katra have inadvertently left Lt. Raschen’s psyche traumatized?~ Jon made a mental note to check Captain Salid in advance about approaching both Sullivan and Raschen in connection doing fitness reports on each. While was thinking about all of this as Captain Salid gave posthumous awards to both Ensign Dornan Weaver and Commander Caskie’s husband, Donald, who had been resurrected, and the died, as a Kobali leader. It was the touching and poignant awards ceremony that Jon witnessed since he’d been assigned to the Rosenante. After the award ceremony was over Captain Salid if anyone there had any questions. Not wanting to express his wishes to talk to both Liniments Sullivan and Raschen clinically, Jon had no question s for Captain Salid. No one else in the lounge seemed to have any questions either. After a minute or so, Captain Salid adjoined the meeting. Singly and in groups of two and threes, the rest of the attending officers departed the observation lounge. V’Shera returned to the bridge. Captain Salid became occupied with other command duties. Jon departed the lounge at last.
