She had crept out of Matthew's quarters five minutes earlier, acting on a compulsion to get out and wander a bit before she had to study again. There was a lot she had to know, including the language called Federation Standard and what their written words meant, before she would be entitled to call herself a Citizen of the Federation, and she had been applying herself to the daunting tasks, wanting nothing more than to please Matthew by doing so. Now she was feeling a little rebellious, she was tired of being cooped up in his quarters. It was time for a break. Arania had been told about ten forward, it was where people congregated to dine and socialize and she had been wanting to investigate the place for quite a while, and now here she was standing before the closed doors. Just two more paces and the doors would open automatically for her to enter. Hesitant now that she was here, she stood for a moment contemplating returning to quarters, a little afraid of meeting new people now the prospect was imminent. ~Don't be a vroon (fool), Arania, everyone is nice on the ship and you are hungry, they will feed you!~ A tantalizing smell assailed her nostrils, causing her stomach to growl and gnaw at her ribs. Needing no further prompting, Arania moved forward. The doors parted and silently and cautiously, she entered, inhaling the delicious smell of what she recognized as being ~Caw-fee!~ (USS Boudicca - Inside Ten Forward - Arania - 0508) It was remarkably devoid of people, only a sprinkling of diners were sat at various tables, and behind the counter stood a woman whom Arania noted, resembled the people from her world's eastern hemisphere. A human looking man was seated at the counter drinking a cup of the tantalizing brew that had drawn Arania inside. As Arania moved closer to the counter she saw that the yellow-skinned woman was exactly the same height as Arania, though once the young Iradonian slithered on to a stool, she was a head taller than the other woman. "Greetings!" Arania smiled at her and then at the man a couple of stools away. "I wish some of that?" She asked, inclining her head towards the man who was sipping from his cup. "It is called caw-fee, no?" (reply Mei-Ling) "I hunger also, but no credits do I have." Arania's Federation Standard was far from fluent. "I can make music to trade?" She added, hoping to barter her songs and music for the food and bringing out her pipes to show as proof, that indeed she could provide what she promised. (Reply Mei-Ling, Donald, Any) (Posted by Sal) (USS Boudicca - Ten Forward - Bar Manager Mei Ling Hikaru - 0509) A woman Mei Ling had only glimpsed before entered and sat herself down on one of the stools at the bar. "Greetings!" the woman said, smiling at Mei Ling and then at Donald. "I wish some of that?" She asked, inclining her head towards Donald's coffee. "It is called caw-fee, no?" "It's Arania, isn't it?" Mei Ling asked. She had heard of Matt's new lady. All the talk on the ship made its way to Ten Forward, sooner or later. Usually sooner. "And yes, it's coffee. I'll get you a cup," she added with a smile, reaching below the counter and bringing out another cup and saucer and pouring some coffee into it. "You can add cream and sugar too if you want," she added, indicating a small jug and a sugar bowl. "My name is Mei Ling, by the way." "I hunger also, but no credits do I have." Arania said. "I can make music to trade?" she added, bringing out a set of pipes. Mei Ling smiled. "It's all free," she said. "You don't need to pay for anything you eat or drink here, Arania. Though any time you feel like it, it would be nice to have some music in here. I'm sure the other customers would love it! What would you like to eat?" (Reply Arania, Donald, Any) (Posted by Liz) (USS Boudicca - Ten Forward - Arania - 0510) Arania was feeling a little shy but she smiled to the yellow-skinned woman and the man who sat a couple of stools away as she greeted them both politely. "My gratitude," Arania replied, her smile growing, "some cooked bird layings would break my fast well, with perhaps some black bread layered of butt'r." Arania made a motion of spreading something over the palm of her hand. "Lots butt'r!" She added and giggled. "And music I *love* to make always." Her smile turned into a big, delighted grin and her fingers instinctively took up their playing position on the pipes as she looked around at the people eating their meals. They all looked like they needed something to give them a boost. Arania lifted the pipes to her eager lips and began to play a dancing melody, it was crisp and light with a spring in it that could set toes tapping. There were several already lining up in her mind and where one tune ended another began. Commander Zzt, 1159) Zzt was sitting on the floor, in his usually space on the floor, looking over a PADD he held in one paw. With the upgrades to the Boudicca finished, Zzt had turned his attention to the next set of upgrades. He was using data he had collected during his tenure as CEO of the Nimitz. Some of it was extremely advanced and Zzt was enjoying himself trying to figure out exactly how to get some of it to work with Star Fleet technology. With his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth and his toe claws wiggling merrily, Zzt tapped away on his PADD waiting for the mission to start. He looked up as he heard the doors open and saw Captain Sevant walk in. Zzt blinked when he saw the person who walked in right behind the Captain. Zzt sniffed the air as his eyes went wide in surprise. ~It is HIM!~ Zzt thought catching that scent he knew so well. "FELLGROOD!!" Zzt yelled as he jumped to his paws. He charged quickly across the room to Falthgood and grabbed his old friend up in a hug, lifting Falthgood completely off the floor. He then licked Falthgood's face several times before hugging him again. Zzt set Falthgood down and smiled down at his old friend clapping his paws together merrily. "Zzt glad see you," Zzt said, his attention completely on Falthgood. "How you be? Zzt miss you. You miss Zzt? You want have milkshake with Zzt later?" Zzt then noticed Falthgood's collar and the four gold pips on it. "CAPTAIN!!? You Captain now!? When that happen? Congratulations!" Zzt threw his arm around his old friend again and gave him another small hug of congratulations. (Reply Falthgood IYW) Zzt's eyes widened as he suddenly remembered something and held up a claw to Falthgood. Zzt patted his chest and sides with his paws until he found the pocket he was looking for. Zzt pulled out a large pair of sunglasses, the same pair Falthgood had given him when they had served together on the Nimitz. Zzt lifted the sunglasses up so Falthgood could see them then positioned them carefully on his snout in front of his eyes and put the ear pieces over his ears, making himself look absolutely absurd. Zzt grinned and nodded approvingly to Falthgood. Zzt then noticed Captain Sevant out of the corner of his eye and looked in his direction...and stopped cold. Zzt knew that look and cringed visibly. He looked at Falthgood and then back at Sevant. Zzt then scurried back over to his corner like a whipped puppy and quickly sat back down trying to look lost in his PADD, his sunglasses sitting lopsided on his snout. (Reply Falthgood, Sevant, Any at Meeting) (posted by Wes) (USS Boudicca - Observation Lounge - ACEO Lorimar - 1215) Bob had been listening with rapt attention to first the Captain (Admiral!) and now the First Officer (Captain!) as they had spelled out the task before them. He pondered the roles that engineering might and must play in the drama-to-come as Stakes outlined the sweeping changes aboard ship. Bob smiled and gave a congratulatory nod at each named officer as they received promotions, reassignments and temporary duties. ~A great group of lads and lassies they are, each mair than deservin' ah'm sure. WHAT DID HE JUST SAY?~ "Mister Lorimar? you are hereby promoted to the rank of Ensign senior grade, to follow suit and to denote your exemplary service so far. " Bob paled a little, then blushed at the mention of his name. He found his voice after a moment and managed a polite, but stunned, "Thank you sir!" before lapsing back into a stunned and embarrassed silence. ~An 'attaboy'? >From Stakes? Why? All ah've done is help fix a few things that were broken... any guid engineer would do the same, and faster no doubt... ~ He fought the urge to pinch himself to ensure he was not dreaming, the returned his full attention to the matters at hand. Bob listened intently to the next few minutes of briefing, taking notes as appropriate. Just as he thought the meeting was about to break up, something very unexpected occurred. As all the monitors went dark, the doors hissed open and a small group of yeoman carrying trays holding glasses and carafes walked in. One's nervousness was betrayed as she approached the table, Bob could hear the faintest *tinkling* sound as the yeoman's hands shook just enough to rattle the tray and its contents. Bob smiled at her as she filled glasses, as much to ease his nerves as her own. She paused just for an instant, returned his look with a thankful one of her own then withdrew with the others. "... Ladies and gentlemen, rise, please and join me" said Stakes. There was an audible scuffing of chairs as Bob pushed his chair back and rose to his feet. Stakes picked up the glass before him, and Lorimar followed suit. Bob studied the contents of the glass in his hand, admiring its purity. He smiled almost to himself as he silently wished it had the smoky hue of a good single malt. ~Ah well... tis wonderful water, ah'm sure.~ "To the restoration of purity in our lives." ~Ah'll drink tae that!~ thought Bob. Aloud, he breathed a very quiet but surely audible "Amen." (Reply Any, IYW) (Posted by Russ) (USS Boudicca - Observation Lounge- CEO- Lt. Matthew McLaren-- 1220) Matthew listened with rapt attention at the audacious plan that he knew deep in his soul they were likely to fail. He had known the MDF intimately years ago. He had done a training stint on the unmanned stations just after he had graduated the academy. Certainly after all these years with the war on, they'd upgraded the system. The data that the admiral was presenting looked dated to McLaren, who as a trained engineer, always assumed that there had been modifications or upgrades to any piece of hardware that had been in service for more than twelve months. Worse, was the fact that the Admiral didn't seem to have a tactical plan more defined than , 'were going to punch a hole in it and head straight for Valhalla and Mars!' Matthew may not be a command or flag officer, but even he understood that an offensive as complex as coordinating 400 ships-of-the-line needed something more than that. There should be approach vectors, squadron organization, a hierarchy of command staff in the event that the Task Force Commander was killed in action. There had to be more than the fundamental military version of a smash-and-grab. The addition of the Neg'Var class ships, eased his mind somewhat, but then the Task Force would need to protect them as well. That wouldn't be an easy task. Matthew seriously doubted that the Doenitz Fleet would simply sit back and let them pick off the emplacements with impunity. The First Officer made Captain cleared his throat. Matthew's eyes were drawn to the man like a moth were drawn to a flame. In the months since he had joined the ship, Matthew had come to respect the man. He was an efficient officer. And while a strict disciplinarian, he was fair which was an uncommon pair of traits to find in a senior officer. "Let it be clear to everyone," he said looking around, but not to anyone in particular, "that the nineteenth will have to do what is required and so that the nineteenth can do what it is required to do, the Boudicca will have to do what she is required to do. At all costs. Keep that in mind, we will not fail. To ensure that we will not fail, there will be some changes to the crew positioning." Matthew listened intently, anticipating only minor changes, but getting something more than he had thought was coming. "Mister McLaren, you will work with me to introduce a few ... specialties. I have first line knowledge of the ships and situations that we will encounter and that will allow us to prepare some specific defenses. For that reason you will be detached from normal engineering duties." Matthew blinked, he was speechless. ~Detached from Normal engineering duties?~ he thought. He just nodded, taken aback by the sudden unexpected change. "Mister al-Sharif, you will command Boudicca Engineering until Mister McLaren is available again, but you will assist him with any of the work that is required by him. Mister Zzt, I will expect you to assist both engineering groups with their work. Oh, and Mister al-Sharif, so that any confusion may be prevented, you are hereby promoted to the rank of Lieutenant junior grade. Mister Lorimar? you are hereby promoted to the rank of Ensign senior grade, to follow suit and to denote your exemplary service so far. " "Thank you sir!" Lorimar stuttered. At least Matthew hadn't been the only one surprised. At least Archibald had made good choices. They were fundamentally the same decisions Matthew would have made, had the decision been his to make. "Mister Stolev will become my First Officer. As such, he will be unavailable to assist the Security Department. Mister Lorak, you will be his replacement and lead the security and tactical department. It will be your job to ensure that any boarders will be dealt with expediently. You will not be able to count on any Marines left on board, as they will have other tasks. The ship's survival is not our first priority, the success of the mission is. However, as I appreciate that your task has increased significantly, you are hereby promoted to Ensign senior grade as well." Archibald let his words rest for a second. "Mister Stolev, on board the Star, it took the complete crew two minutes and thirty four seconds to go from a state of yellow alert to full combat readiness. From our last battles, I have measured the Boudicca crew to take 4 minutes and twenty seven seconds to do the same. I suggest your first priority will be to reduce that time considerably. You may hold training alerts as long as they do not interfere with out current mission of keeping up the pressure until the fleets have assembled completely." Archibald regarded his hands for a second. "Mister McLaren, Mr. Stolev and myself will form a triumvirate who will overlook the necessary changes to the ship and it's crew. You will all perform your normal duties but will assist us with everything that we require of you so that when the times comes, the first beams that will hit Starbase Valhalla will be fired by us. We will kill. We will die. But Valhalla will fall." ~A triumvirate? Was Stakes basically saying that Matthew was acting in the capacity of Second Officer. If stakes was the CO and Stolev the FO, and he was mentioned right alongside the pair of them, wouldn't that imply that he was Acting Second Officer ? I'll have to get clarification from the captain on that question.~ Archibald stood up and signaled to his daughter, Esme. She nodded, then clapped her hands and at the sound the doors opened as all screens turned dark at the same time. A group of yeoman entered, each carrying a tray with carafe and glasses. They filled the glasses from the carafe as they walked around the room, placing the glasses filled with clear liquid in front of each officer. As soon as every officer had a glass in front of them, they silently filed away again and the door was closed once again. Matthew eyes his glass with curiosity. The screens turned back on, to show a picture of serenity and peace, a small mountain stream against the background of a forested chain of mountains. "The water in the glasses in front of you has been bottled by me the last time I left Earth, the stream can be found just outside Auckland where I was born." Archibald continued. "You may look and will see no trace of contamination in it. It is pure, undisturbed, untouched by human hands. Clear mountain water has always been a symbol of purity. And as such it signifies our duty. To remove the contamination. To restore purity to the world. Ladies and gentlemen, rise, please and join me." Matthew stood. Archibald picked up the crystal glass and held it in front of him. "To the restoration of purity in our lives." Matthew picked the glass off the table and held it aloft. "Here, Here!" he said and drank from the glass. It was as clear and smooth as Archibald had promised and Matthew couldn't help but nod and smile. ~The man has taste!~ he thought. (USS Boudicca - Observation Lounge - Yeoman - PO Esmeralda Stakes - 1225). It took great effort on part of Esme not to wriggle (or giggle) when her father proposed a toast with the mountain stream water. She herself knew from first hand experience that the water the officers were now drinking might not be as clear as her father made it out to be. She herself knew several instances where she had little 'accidents' when swimming in the cold stream. And Billy just loved to blow bubbles in the water. Only from the other end. ~How gross can you get?~ she considered but then, remembering her brother and the stuff they did when her father was away, she inwardly grinned. ~VERY gross.~ Of course it had been many years ago when they swam in that stream, but still, it was the principle that counted, right? Luckily her father had never even contemplated offering a glass to the yeomen as well, which was definitely one of the times that his unbending nature was actually a blessing. She would have hardly been in a position to refuse to drink it and knowing what exactly had gone on in the stream, she didn't think she would have been able to drink it either. Never the less, that water had as much a meaning to Esme as it had to her father, perhaps even more. Because it stood for a time when things were different, for a time of endless playing and enjoyment, a time of togetherness. She sighed softly and bit her lips, cursing inwardly, when her father's head jerked slightly to the side. ~He knew, he always knew.~ she realised not for the first time. ~How does he do it?~ she wondered. ~He doesn't see it, he doesn't hear it, but he always knows. Empathic? But mother was the empathic one, one look and she could look straight inside you and see where the hurt was. She wetted her lips and wondered how 'they' were doing. Would 'they' be thinking of them, as much as they were thinking of 'them'. Her eyes glanced along the room until they stopped at her father's head. She knew that he thought of 'them' probably as much, or even more, as she did. The way he sometimes held the holo-photograph of the four of them, the last time they were all together, eight months ago, the way he suddenly opened his mouth to say something, only to remain silent as he looked around him to find that 'she' was not there. And always those gestures were followed by him straightening his back and smiling at her, determined to show strength so that others could cling to that. Others? No, other. Those shows were for her benefit only. And she loved him dearly for it. ~But why does he always have to be such a pompous a**e!~ She heard someone clear his throat and instinctively she looked up to the ring of officers to see if anyone needed anything. But they all seemed pretty content so she relaxed and wanted to continue her line of thoughts until she heard the throat clearing again, this time louder and she suddenly realised it came from the man in front of her! She quickly took a step aside so she could watch her father's face and frowned when he did not look at her. ~And why is he stroking his arm? And plucking lint of it??????~ Her eyes grew wide as she quickly looked down to see where her had found an offending piece of dust on her uniform until it suddenly hit her. "Yes, Sir," she said as she came to attention. "They have been delivered." She could feel his nod, rather than see his head actually moving, but it was good enough. She stepped back to her original position and imagined how the promoted officers would look when they returned to their quarters and found a white dress uniform there with their new rank pips and a note, explaining how they would be expected to wear that uniform for the whole day tomorrow, to signify their new position for all to see. For a stuffy man who would not even consider congratulating an officer with achieving a higher rank, as it obviously was their merit rather than luck that gave them the raise, he sure knew how to make sure they all would know it. ~*MY* Dad,~ Esme thought with a grin that disappeared as quick as it appeared. By the time he had run the short distance to it, he had his uniform in a fair semblance of order. "Main Engineering," he barked at the car controls as he was reviewing Red Alert protocol in his mind. He ran the rest of the way when the turbolift arrived, just barely clearing the doors of engineering as they opened before him. He raced to the Master Situation Display and picked up where the duty engineers had started. His hands fairly flew over the controls, the months of practice and practicality paying clear dividend. Other crew ran in behind him, joining those already present. Everyone moved swiftly, but clearly with purpose. ~ The Chief has a fine bunch here indeed, ~ he thought, proud to be counted among them. His eyes scanned the status boards rapidly, the computer assisted checklist scrolling in front of him as crew and machine blurred into one creature, with but a single purpose. He glanced at the chronometer on the panel in front of him. Command staff should appear to always be in control, especially if they weren't. "Sir, Mr. Laroon has apparently found something requiring my attention. And these were simulated drills so they all knew that they were coming. He realised that they had only just started but even so, with simulated and expected drills there would not be nearly as much confusion as during a proper and unexpected attack. Perhaps that would be something that he could discuss with Stolev. Perhaps some programs that would create ghost ships on the sensors? "Sir I know you got me message about the....Captain Rivers affair" he looked at Stolev for a second and then started talking. "I had the computer inform me when it had cracked the security codes on the traitor acting as Casely's computer. I came to look at what it found along with the evidence I had uncovered in his quarters to find any match." He stoped and looked around for a second and then back to Stolev. "Sir your going to have to take a look for yourself." He pointed to his computer screen and then pulled the chair out for the FO to sit. (Reply Stolev, Johnson iyw) (Posted by Jay) NRPG: Great, you made it back. Did you know that show didn't even hit the airwaves before it got cancelled. And they already had 13 episodes in the can. Pretty amazing isn't it? Okay, so what did you bring me? What's that? Eewww? How is that going to help us? Don't you remember the plan? Okay, okay, I'm sorry I yelled. I'll have this examined. We'll meet again. Get those photo's. They are key. The coast is clear, I'll see you soon. The code word is alfalfa. -USS Boudicca, NCC 49901 Star Trek: Freedom - http://www.startrekfreedom.com
