Elith Rejal – 0532) "Augh!" Elith gasped as he was forced awake by a sharp pain in his arm. Usually, his body would wait until he had awoken before it started to bother him, but it seems like his arm started acting up at just the right moment. "Wonderful." He sighed, "Computer, time." [The current time is 0532 hours.] "Even better." He tried to flex his arm, only to be met with more pain. Today was one of the few days he had that he was able to actually sleep a good amount, and with his exhausting last few days fixing freighters, he was looking forward to it. Then again, he couldn't really be surprised, his arm usually bothered him on otherwise good days. He sat up in his bed, and looked around the room. He remembered almost immediately where he had kept his painkillers, and then reached over with his good arm to the nightstand containing the hypo. After injecting himself, he walked over to the replicator and ordered a glass of kanar. He knew full well that it was a bad idea to mix the painkiller with kanar, even if it was synethol kanar, and he didn't care. He knew he wouldn't be getting any more sleep that night, the kanar at least made him feel better about the situation. As he drank, he looked around his room again. His mind wandered to back when he first sustained his injury, that caused his arm to act like it did. During a skirmish in the war, he was fighting off a Federation boarding party on his cruiser, when he was shot with a kill blast in his right arm. It was only a glancing shot, but it still hurt like Hell. He almost had it amputated, but eventually the Cardassian medics found a way to restore functionality. However, due to the way the blast hit him, his arm would occasionally ache at seemingly random intervals, causing Elith to always carry around a hypo containing potent Cardassian painkillers. When he had enrolled in Starfleet, he tried a few Federation painkillers to see if they would work better, but they never did. He even had some Federation doctors look at it, but they couldn't permanently fix it either. Not that Elith minded. He hated his arm whenever it started to ache, but he was reluctant to really find a way to fix it. He couldn't really explain why, but he thought he would lose something if he ever did get it fixed. Besides, it was certainly a character building trait, as he often joked to himself. After he finished the glass, he stood up and contemplated his options. He could try to fall asleep for the two hours until the alarm, but he knew that would be fruitless. He canceled the alarm and decided to start his day earlier than he wanted to. After spending a few uncomfortable minutes getting ready and putting his uniform on, he stalked the halls of the Mithrandir. His ultimate goal was to go to Main Engineering to see what freighter needed repairs now, but he would get to that when he felt more awake. It wasn't like Elith to be lazy like this, but his arm's ache changed his disposition ever so slightly. (Reply any) (Posted by Matt Kirk) (Tarellian Vessel Wanderlust - Prime Director, Dak Osiris & CoSF Col. Reville - 0905) "As you can see Prime Director," Colonel Troy Reville stated, waving one hand to indicate the cargo bay in general as the two men stepped in to the hot, stuffy bay, having met and escorted the PD from the docking bay.  "The living conditions are cramped and undignified, we have no privacy apart from a curtain on our bunks.  We are crammed in here like a can of little fishes!" Col. Reville was not a happy man, not just because he, like everyone else was suffering the indignities of their confined space, but because he was the one that had to listen to the whining and mewling of the people.  Apparently they thought that if they complained to him about it, that he could do something and no matter how often he told them he couldn't change things, they continued to berate him with their problems. Dak sighed softly, this was exactly the reason why he had wanted to be with his people instead of having special privileges aboard the USS Mithrandir, so he could show them that he was sympathetic to their discomfort because he also shared it.  He felt that he and his family should be just as inconvenienced by the cramped conditions as everyone else, but his wife and the CO of the Mithrandir had thought otherwise, and for Reyna and the children's sakes he had accepted the arrangements made for them.  Now, even if he were to tell them that he understood their situation and its inherent problems, they wouldn't believe him after all he was the Prime Director and got special treatment. "I know how it is, Troy and I am sorry it has to be this way, but we needed the majority of the other ships to bring along important equipment and cargo that is crucial to our survival in the next colony, plus the Federation didn't come through with as many ships as it had first told us would be assisting.  I am as incapable of improving their lot as you are." "Hey look!!"  Someone shouted, a woman, her voice riddled with malice and sarcasm.  "Look who has come from his nice, cozy family quarters on the Starfleet ship to see how the peasant scum are living!!   It's our Prime Director, Lord High and Mighty bloody Dak Osiris!  Where's your little pampered wifey and kids Dakkie?  I don't see them all cooped up like cattle in a pen." There were murmurs of agreement from others and the murmurs turned to shouts of outrage as the crowd began to press forward towards the two men. Col. Reville drew his phaser gun and aimed it at the mob that was beginning to form, causing them to still and stop in their tracks but not stopping the growing growl of discontent. Something wet and squishy flew through the air and splattered against Dak's chest to slither slowly downwards to the deck at his feet.  Ignoring it, Dak stepped forward and held up his hands, open and palms facing the crowd. "I know you are angry and I understand the reasons why.  You have every right to be so, nobody should have to live like this, on top of each other, no privacy, it's hot and cramped and smelly, I know, and I am sorry but you know as well as I that this is how it must be until we reach our destination." Mutterings and unhappy grumblings were his reply but he pressed on, at least they were listening and not trying to beat on him. "Things will be better when we arrive.  This is only for a few more weeks and then we will be breathing in fresh air again and building our new homes on our new world.  I promise you, I will be working just as hard as the rest of you to start our new lives." A gruff male voice spoke up, and Dak picked out who it was.  "S'alright for you to say Mistah Prime Directah, you what's living on thet fancy starship, mos' probbly in big VIP quartahs.  You dun 'ave tah pud up wiv dis crap do ya?"  He raised his right hand and saluted Dak with a rude upthrust finger. Dak shook his head.  "No, I don't have to put up with this but it wasn't my choice to be billeted on that ship, I wanted to be with my people and share your discomforts.  That is the honest truth, but which of you would deny your family those quarters, if you had the chance?" Troy Reville -1604) "Colonel Sir, you'd better come quick there's a fight going on in sector 44!!" A pale young face peered round the open door at Colonel Reville who was reviewing his security force personnel's duty schedules in a small storage cupboard he'd commandeered for his office-come-bedroom space, but immediately he dropped what he was doing and hurried after his officer, to where there was quite a commotion going on. People were shouting, and fists and feet were flying.  There were a couple of Starfleet security people knocked out cold including a young man that Reville recognized as the ATAC Ensign Ben Soma, who had tried to persuade the Colonel to allow him to question the refugees when they were still on the planet.  There were a couple of civilians viciously kicking the stuffing out of him as he lay unconscious on the deck. Reville wasted no time, he rushed forward and immediately grabbed one of the assailants and smashed the butt of his phaser with all his might into the man's face.  As the ruffian dropped like a stone to the deck the Colonel lashed out with his boot and connected with the other assailant's jaw, there was an audible /'crackkk' /as the jaw broke under the blow.  He too dropped to the deck while Reville raised his phaser and turned slowly, aiming it at anyone among the onlookers who even looked like they wanted trouble. "Get these people to the sickbay then take those two to the Brig!"  Reville ordered two of his security force, "the rest of you stand guard and keep your eyes and ears open for any further trouble." A chorus of 'yes Sirs' answered him, and with a grunt the Colonel returned to his cubby hole.  Now it was up to the starfleeters in sickbay to report the injuries of their comrades, meanwhile he would write up his own report about the civilian part in the trouble. ~ What do they expect, tempers will be frayed in these kind of living conditions. ~ (reply any on Wanderlust) (posted by Sal) (USS Mithrandir – Officer's Lounge deck 4 – AOPS/CONN NN BJ Stone – 16, 1813 )  BJ was taalking with Morgan and Martzia in the Lounge. "Forgive my ignorance but who is Tommy?" Morgan asked BJ and Martzia.   BJ almost laughed when Morgan asked about Tommy.  "Tommy is a sentient friend of Mei Ling.  I've only met him once but he seems like he will be a lot of fun to spend time with.  From talking with Mei Ling it sounds like Tommy knows a lot of songs.  I hope they can both show up.  Mei Ling probably knows everyone so she could really help us all with introductions."   BJ saw a group of people pulling out instruments.  "So Morgan, do you play any music or maybe sing?  I want to join those people over by the table and see if I can get into a jam session."   (Reply Morgan if U want)   BJ caught Martzia's eye and, with a nod of his head and a slight lift of his guitar case towards the other musicians he mouthed "I'm gunna go jam," as he could see she was making a call.   BJ walked over and joined the five other musicians and quickly introduced himself.  It didn't take long for the six to make introductions, set up, and then find a few fairly popular songs that they all knew.  The first couple of songs were a little rough on the edges but as they played together and had a chance to bond the music became much tighter.  They even played a couple of requests.  BJ was having a great time.   They took a break after playing for about 20 minutes.  BJ shared with his newly met crewmembers that there was wine and snacks over by the table where he had met Martzia and after putting down the guitar he went over to the table for a drink and a snack.   (reply Morgan, Martzia, any) (posted by Mike Barrett) (USS Mithrandir – Officer's Lounge deck 4 – ACSO Martzia– 16, 1814 ) "Forgive my ignorance but who is Tommy?" Morgan asked BJ and Martzia.   "Oh, I will let BJ tell you about Tommy." I have to go set up the boards. Martzia walked over to a box setting in the corner. "Okay, I have here a Master Scrabble set and another favorite a backgammon board. Keep the betting down please. I don't want to get into trouble the second day on the ship." She set them out on two of the lounge tables. The scrabble set had the standard four microPADD configuration and of course was able to play in any federation known language that used symbols, musical or numerical included.   The backgammon boards were in the old pub style, made of an antique wood, with beautiful carvings on the side of the boards and outside boxes. Opening them up, she set one on the table next to her and one on the table in front of her. Several had people came over to see what she was up to. She opened the one in front of her and pulled a jeweled Theater length holder out from inside the box, then placed it in her mouth, and clenching it between her teeth looked up and asked, "You gonna roll or watch?" Then she rolled one of the dark dice. Martzia stated clearly between clenched teeth and turned the dice to 16.  The pip count was close but she had faith in her strategy and skill with both the stones and dice.  "Come on."  Martzia said.  "The game is still wide open."  She also knew people and Seana was not one to take risks lightly.  She knew she would fold.    The girl looked at Martzia from beneath her short cropped hair and hanging bangs.  She blew the bangs out of her eyes and replied.  "Nope, too far gone for me." She tossed in the dice to the board. "You win another round Martzia. Hey, anyone else game." She looked at the others around the table. Several vied for the seat she had.   Martzia added, "I am taking a break folks but here enjoy yourselves. She put her dice in another officer's hands and patted his shoulder as she stood." Carson here gets my lucky dice. She laughed and turned to her last victim.   "Come on Seana let me get you a drink. You played well." She walked her newest friend over to the tables where BJ was chatting with others. Martzia poured Seana a glass of the wine from an ornate bottle someone had brought and set on the table.  After handing her the glass she picked up a small dish of chocolate. "Here you will enjoy this it is K'tarian chocolate, the best." Turning to BJ. He overheard Martzia call her Seana. Turning to BJ Martzia said, "You look like you have been enjoying yourself.  I have met a few new people and it would seem you have been doing the same." Martzia too a sip of her drink. "What was that last song?  I don't think I have ever heard it."   "Oh, that was Touch my Lobes, sort of a Ferengi love ballad that's kind of popular in some of the seedier drinking establishments you'll find on most planets," BJ said with a grin.  "Tommy probably knows all of the words to the song," BJ said with an even bigger grin.  "Samuel was working the Ressikan flute and that really makes the song a lot of fun."   BJ took the opportunity to introduce some of the people he had been playing with to Martzia.  She looked radiant tonight and seemed to be having a blast.  "You know Martzia, this was a really good idea you had - thanks for helping to make this a pretty cool get-to-gether."   "I saw you were working one of the tables while we were playing.  I couldn't see what game you were playing but it looked like you were rolling dice.  Did you kick some butt and take names?"  BJ asked with a grin and a twinkle in his eyes. I need to study more earth history to be sure. During that time perhaps some of the most beautiful music ever written on the planet came into being. You are studied you may not know of any. (Reply any) (Posted by Mike Barrett) (USS Mithrandir – Officer's Lounge deck 4 – ACSO 16, 1900)   The noise was a bit louder than normal for the Deck four officers lounge and the crew seemed to be all having a good time. BJ and Seana and the rest of the group were playing an interesting piece and a few of the others were dancing in a folk style, Martzia wasn't sure from what area of the galaxy but it was attractive and lively. ~He sure has a diverse repertoire.~ She thought as she sat on the sofa in the corner watching the action. It had been a long journey through the academy and to here. It just seemed time to begin making new alliances.   It wasn't as if ship life was new to her but making close friends had always been difficult. She had many friendships more than some less than others. She was the type that always tried to help out the lost one to repay the gift she had received. The question came up in her mind again. How did she get abandoned and why are there so few? Just how many other Chameloids are there in Starfleet. If she heard again, 'Well, we don't see many of your type.' she thought she would choke. Never had she ever entertained finding the home world or even researching into her species. She knew basic anatomy and physics. Bekele had seen to that, but nothing else. Perhaps it was time to finally look into the history of her people and find out. Did she dare? In actuality she didn't think it was such a good idea. No, that would be a betrayal. ~Time to quit pondering that nonsense.~   She watched as a couple in the corner began to dance slowly and seemed to be enjoying the break from the stresses of duty and another group chatted and laughed over a game board. There were the security folks all arm wrestling and back slapping and a few of her science staff that seemed huddled over the latest discussion on whatever new discovery had been listed in the Journals. Yes, she thought in whole it was a success.   She watched the musicians a while longer and then decided to join in the dancing. "Okay, can a two legged girl learn this one?" She smiled and they waved her in.   (Reply, anyone) (Posted by Ber) (USS Mithrandir – Officer's Lounge deck 4 – ACSO Martzia – 16, 1935)   Martzia spied the Ops officer across the room as she gathered her games together. "We have to work through those samples together, remember?" He waved. "Oh, I remember. You just get those things you call hands around the sample this time." Martzia laughed. She watched as he shook his head at her and walked out. She placed her private things in a crate and headed for the door. She had an early appointment with the holo-deck thanks to BJ's advice. She really had taken a liking to his relaxed style. She was disappointed she hadn't seen him leave. She had planned to let him know what a great evening this had been for her. "Oh, well." He tried sitting up was immediately overwhelmed with pain. He felt as if he had been in a battle with a couple Klingon's. Then he remembered the riot in the civilian quarters, the last thing he recalled was getting kicked in the ribs. Trying to sit up again he heard someone approaching.   "Easy Mr. Soma, you’re in pretty bad shape. If you hadn't been pulled out when you were........well just be thankful you were pulled out. We don't have the medical facilities of your ship, this is just a triage and unfortunately you were not the only victim of the riot. We stabilized your condition but you are going to be stiff and sore for quite sometime, unless you return to your ship and see your own doctors."   "No, my duties are here on the Wanderlust. I'll live." Ben replied.   "As you wish, would you like to hear your report or would you rather rest a bit first?" asked the Medic.   "How long have I been out?" Ben asked.   "You've been here for nearly four hours, as I said you were in pretty rough shape." replied the Medic.   Ben sat up this time fighting the pain as he did. It had taken all his strength to do so and all his discipline not to cry out in pain, a Vulcan would have been proud of the effort if Vulcan's felt pride.   "I've rested long enough, what happened?"   "A riot broke out and you tried to intervene." said the Medic. "Why didn't you use your phaser?"   "I thought reason would work, guess I was wrong." Ben said gently feeling his ribs, which were very sore.   "The phaser would have worked better. Now Mr. Soma, you had four broken ribs, three fractured ribs, a punctured lung and a bruised kidney as well as other bruising. As you have no doubt noticed you also have quite the black eye." Explained the Medic, "The worst of your injuries have been dealt with, the rest you will have to deal with."   "Can I leave?" He asked.   "Your life is no longer in danger, you may leave. But I would suggest that you avoid any more fighting or strenuous activity." replied the Medic.   "Thanks for the advice." Ben said as he looked around the cramped medical ward.   All the beds seemed to be filled with injured civilians and a couple Starfleet personnel. He got off the bed and walked over to see who they were. They were a couple crewmen whom he had seen a couple times, the Medic assured him that they were in stable condition. Also amongst the injured were several blueshirts who looked as bad as he felt. The Medic said they would all live. Satisfied with the result Ben left the med bay as quickly as he could manage. He needed to report the incident to the Mithrandir. He decided he would contact Sanok, he was in charge of the efforts on the freighters. His friend would make the necessary report to the Mithrandir.   After he had found a more suitable location he sat down and winced as his ribs began to throb. He couldn't remember a time when he had been in such a mess. Tapping his commbadge he said,   "Soma to Sanok, there has been a riot on the Wanderlust. Though Sanok once lived with his emotions, this was something he could never understand.  Couldn't the people accept that this temporary inconvenience, was better than dying on New Eden? "Send me your report whenever you are able," said Sanok. "We're in a difficult situation.  I know you will do your best to handle every adversity." If it didn't have colonists the captain would have abandoned them and returned for them, but there were just too many colonists and the other freighters were too filled to hold any more.  As it was the over crowding was adding to the unrest that a month ago had led to a riot.  To supplement the security forces, operation personnel had been diverted to assist on the freighters. The biggest concern was supplies.  At the reduced speed, they would reach the new colony a week behind schedule at a minimum.  And food supplies would be diminished.  The original plan had called for bringing extra supplies in the event they trip took longer, but the decision to take as many of the New Edenites skewed the logistic process.  The science department at the time had been confident about minimizing disturbances in the expanse by avoiding as much of it with the Mithrandir's sensors.  However, that confidence had been slightly optimistic.  And it was based on the freighters remaining fully operational throughout the journey. The Federation's current state of rebuilding had unfortunately stuck these colonists with sub-par ships.  It was the Mithrandir's job to see that they made it to their new home.  Olorin just wasn't sure what shape they would be in when they arrived.
