Dr. Caskie was rather relaxed and friendly, but Nissa wasn’t sure what else to speak about. She did get the feeling that her formal nature made her new CMO slightly uncomfortable. The long silences and formal discussion topics were natural to Nissa, but she had noticed on Earth that many humans preferred a more relaxed interpersonal style. “I have to apologize for my sometimes overly-formal nature and my awkwardness, Doctor. I have found that it can make people uncomfortable, but I find it a difficult habit to change. Regardless of how I may perform in social situations, I do hope that you will find me to be a competent physician and a valued member of your staff.” Josh sighed and smiled a Nissa. "Doctor, whilst I will not lie to you and say that how you perform in social situations is not pertinent to how you deal with patients, it is not the be all and end all of any evaluation I may make on you. I may be a friendly, chatty type of person. That does not mean that I think every single member of my staff has to react exactly the same way, or indeed deal with patients and staff the same way I do. I understand that your race reacts more formally than humans do. So do Vulcans. That however has very little bearing on how you conduct yourself in sickbay. It is your conduct in Sickbay that I will evaluate not how you interact with everyone else. You are free to choose your own path in that respect. I only hope that eventually you and I will come to regard each other as friends and not simply co-workers." "This meeting was simply meant to be a get to know each other type of meeting, although we have covered more topics than i intended and I thank you for that, If you have somewhere else you need to be now then please feel free to leave, if not then please feel free to stay and chat. Either way you are under no obligation. The choice is yours, (Reply Nissa) (Posted by Marilyn) === (Starbase Geneva - Promenade, Taste of Rome Restaurant - Yeoman Letitia Addams - Day 1 - 1919) "... So now you know everything about me," finished Ahmed. "Go sailing with me tomorrow, Letty?" he said. "I have a holosuite set aside for 6 hours. It's a Bajoran sea simulation. We can have lunch and just get to know each other. It will be fun." "I'd like that!" Letty said, eyes shining. "It does indeed sound fun." At that moment the waiter returned, triumphantly bearing an unopened bottle of champagne, which he showed to Ahmed for his approval. As Ahmed explained to the waiter what they actually *did* want to drink, Letty sat back and listened. When the waiter had gone, Ahmed having agreed to pay for the champagne anyway, she smiled at him. "That was a nice thing to do," she said. Colonel Drizzt - 1752) Drizzt, his antenna twitched, stopped for several moments and listened to what was coming out of the living room. He was half dressed, finally dried off from the shower, and starting to feel like he might want to live again. "I'll give them this," Drizzt said as he pulled a loose fitting tunic over his head to cover his scarred blue hide. "The kid knows how to talk... and if he was ever shy, it doesn't show now." He paused again for a second as he continued listening, and then suddenly started chuckling. "I have trouble imagining Captain Sevant referred to as 'Uncle Cally'. How did he ever take to that?" (reply: Rivers) Drizzt ran a hand through his short, white, hair to straighten it and with his ministrations done... paused to watch Susan finish hers. "I have trouble imagining Captain Sevant referred to as 'Uncle Cally'. How did he ever take to that?" Susan paused in the act of combing her hair and looked at him via the mirror. "Very well indeed," she said slowly. "Those were very different days, before he lost his family. The kids used to play together - Jayne and T'Loren Sevant, and Loren and Shun - when we were all on the Nimitz together. Then they and their mother were killed - " she broke off. "It's a long story, and not a very happy one, really. I'll tell you it all later, if that's OK?" She looked at her reflection without really seeing it for a long moment, then firmly put the memories back where they belonged for the moment. Picking up the comb again she finished off her hair and stood up. "I'm ready," she said, slipping her feet into the dark green shoes that matched the new dress she wore - one of the ones she had bought on the shopping trip with Josh. Emerald studs flashed in the lobes of her ears. Susan looked at Leonal with approbation. "You look very nice, ashke," she said, giving him a kiss. "Nice enough to take out," she joked. "But we'd better go greet our guests before Shun talks them to death," she added with a smile. As they entered the living area, she heard Letty say to Shun, "Well now, I guess you could call me his girlfriend." Susan's eyebrow raised a little, but she smiled and said, "I'm sorry we kept you waiting. I see you've already met Shun and Loren -" she looked at the sofa. "Loren, put your book down now please. We have guests." "Sorry," Loren mumbled, putting her PADD down. "Do sit down," Susan continued to Ahmed and Letty. "Can I get anyone a drink?" "It's a long story, and not a very happy one, really. I'll tell you it all later, if that's OK?" Drizzt paused and nodded. He'd heard rumors that Sevant hadn’t been the hardass he once was, but his family had been murdered by agents of the new Regime before there'd been a new regime. None of it had ever been confirmed though, and a Marine didn’t have the access or reason to dig through personnel files- especially not to satisfy rumor. From her tone, Drizzt presumed that the rumors had more then a grain of truth. He was a bit confused about 'their mother being killed', though. He clearly remembered Victoria Sevant, his wife. Though, now that he thought about it, there was rumors about that as well. She'd just shown up on board, and suddenly the Captain had changed himself... not much, just enough to be noticed by people who were used to reading hidden intentions. Now that his curiosity was stoked, she'd definitely have to say something about it later. "I'm ready," she said, bringing him out of his woolgathering. He smiled, she looked great. And the colors she chose instantly put him at ease. "You look very nice, ashke," she said, giving him a kiss. "Nice enough to take out," she joked. "But we'd better go greet our guests before Shun talks them to death," "Heaven forbid..." he said as he gestured for her to precede him out the door. "Well now, I guess you could call me his girlfriend." Susan said after she stepped out. Leonal had obviously missed that question. The Captain smiled and said," I'm sorry we kept you waiting. I see you've already met Shun and Loren -" she looked at the sofa. "Loren, put your book down now please. We have guests." "Sorry," Loren mumbled, putting her PADD down. The First Officer, whom Drizzt had only met once, stepped forward like a peddler and offered up a couple of bottles. "The Andorian Whiskey I bought… the champagne was something I did not request, but seemed to have been convinced it was in my best interest to buy." "Oooh," Drizzt said, just loud enough to be heard. He took the bottles from Susan and looked at them. "This should be interesting." "Do sit down," Susan continued to Ahmed and Letty. "Can I get anyone a drink?" "Thank you, please. Do you have any chilled pomegranate juice?" he replied. Drizzt left Susan to do her thing as he went to the small wet-bar that the quarters sported. He placed both bottles down, and stepped back over in time to hear conversation turn to books. He took a seat next to Susan and watched. The only person here he actually knew was Susan, this would be the very definition of awkard for him. Being a Marine didn’t mean he had no social graces, quite the opposite, but that didn’t mean he was a chatter-box either. (reply: any) === (Starbase Geneva - Captain Rivers' Quarters - FO - Lt. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid - 1758) "Let's see, " Ahmed replied, " My name is Ahmed, I am indeed 'Auntie Susan's' new FO. I do not know Uncle Cally. I do like pets. I'd love to see your Kemrian frog-bear later. I'm sorry about your rhyl…. And you'll have to ask Miss Addams that last question. It's best for her to answer it." He turned and grinned at Letty. "Well, you heard the boy?" he quipped then chuckled. Ahmed had just finished chuckling in time to catch site of Captain Rivers and Colonel Drizzt entering the room just as Letty was answering Shun's question. "Well now, I guess you could call me his girlfriend." she replied. Ahmed just smiled and shook his head. He reasoned that was just Letty's way of staving off the eventual "why not?' question that would have come from any other answer. The Captain smiled and said," I'm sorry we kept you waiting. I see you've already met Shun and Loren -" she looked at the sofa. "Loren, put your book down now please. We have guests." "Sorry," Loren mumbled, putting her PADD down. Ahmed took a couple of steps forward and offered the two bottles of Alcohol to the captain. "The Andorian Whiskey I bought… the champagne was something I did not request, but seemed to have been convinced it was in my best interest to buy." he said smiling, he was such a sucker for a soft sell. Then it dawned on him that he didn't remember there being anything in the captain's records about her having children. The same was true of the Colonel. They were obviously wards that had been taken on by Sam Kaneshiro, Susan could have adopted them. Or there might not be any relationship there at all, other than that of child and ward. "Do sit down," Susan continued to Ahmed and Letty. "Can I get anyone a drink?" "Thank you, please. Do you have any chilled pomegranate juice?" he replied. (reply Letty) Ahmed sat on the couch next to Loren, careful not to crowd her. Letitia sat next to him. Accepted the drinks from Susan, handing Letty's off in turn to her. He took a sip. It was very good pomegranate juice. "So what are you reading?" he asked the girl. (reply Loren) "I don't believe I've ever read it. May I?" he asked indicating the PADD. She handed it to him, taking note of the page that she was on and began the book from the beginning. He flipped through the screens rapidly, noting each page in turn. When he had completed the work. He returned it to the page that she was on. "That looks to be a very interesting book. I hope you're enjoying it." he commented. (reply Loren) "Yes I did." he replied. (reply Loren) "Pick any page that you like. And I'll show you." (reply Loren) Ahmed closed his eyes for a few seconds and recited the entire page, verbatim. "See?" he asked. (reply Loren, Any room for more) "Well Captain these certainly are very nice quarters. One might think you were a visiting dignitary rather than a Starfleet Captain." Ahmed commented off hand a smile settling across his face. (reply Rivers, Drizzt room for more) === (Starbase Geneva - Captain Rivers' Quarters - CO - Captain Susan Rivers - 1830) At 1830 on the dot, Modor entered from the kitchen. "Dinner is served," he said with a flourish, placing a large, multi-sectioned dish on the table. Susan's eyes widened. She had completely forgotten about him - or more accurately, she had forgotten to tell Leonal that their chef was a Tellarite. "For starters we have Filfil rumi mahsi MaAa lon or stuffed sweet peppers in honour of the Commander and his guest," Modor continued, bowing in Ahmed's direction, "Hasperat in honour of the Captain and her wards and sautéed Andorian tuber root in honour of the Colonel," he finished, again bowing politely, this time to Leonal. "Well, come and eat!" Modor said crossly. "Otherwise the next course will spoil!" And he stomped off back towards the kitchen. (Reply any) (Posted by Liz) === (Starbase Geneva - Captain Rivers' Quarters - MCO - Lt. Colonel Drizzt - 1831) "Dinner is served," Drizzt did a double-take and his eyes narrowd slightly as a furball stepped out of the kitchen. He took a breath and looked at Susan, his eyes still narrowed, and made a note to have a... chat... with her later. ... Andorian's generally hated Tellarite, and Vice Versa. "For starters we have Filfil rumi mahsi MaAa lon or stuffed sweet peppers in honor of the Commander and his guest," Modor continued, bowing in Ahmed's direction, "Hasperat in honor of the Captain and her wards and sautéed Andorian tuber root in honor of the Colonel," Drizzt, who'd just been taking a drink to clear the sudden bad taste in his mouth, almost choked. "Well, come and eat!" Modor said crossly. "Otherwise the next course will spoil!" And he stomped off back towards the kitchen. "Ladies, would you mind accompanying me to the dinner table?" The First Officer asked a few moments later. "After you, Commander." He said as he stepped up to Susan. "And you," he said in a much quieter tone, "As tempting as the idea was when I first saw our... cook, I don't have to get my revenge on you anymore. I just have to watch you eat dinner." His smile was toothy as they stepped into the dining area. The Hasperat and sweet peppers looked delicious. The stewed Andorian Tuber Root looked like someone had poured some spices poured on the contents of a used toilet, with some strawberries mixed in for color. The tubers were soaking in a brown greasy gravy, which was fairly traditional. As far as Tuber's went, it looked to be prepared properly... which was to say; even the sight of it disgusted him. He'd grown up on the stuff. It was a dish that used to be served in the worst Andorian Prisons. In these more 'enlightened' days, it was still something of an acquired taste- something like Liver and Onions on Earth, Leonal was given to understand. It was a taste he'd most certainly never acquired. What's sad was, the Tellarite probably thought he WAS doing Leonal an honor. It was said that Tellarites thought this stuff was a delicacy. Well, they were welcome to it, as far as he was concerned. He pulled out Susan's chair and smiled large, "Bon appetite." (reply: Any) (posted by Trout) === (Starbase Geneva - Captain Rivers' Quarters - FO - Lt. Cmdr. He tossed them onto the desk a moment later and leaned back in his chair, the Marine hadn't so much as twitched in the minute or so it had taken to read. He folded his fingers together, "Interesting jacket you have here." He finally said. "I like to think of myself as a deadly man, a great sniper- an excellent Combat Engineer." His antenna twitched and he glanced at the PADD again, "It seems, though, that greatness has come among us. This says you're one of the top rated snipers in This Mans Corps... indeed." He looked back up, "Do you take pride in your abilities, Marine?" (reply: Tam) Drizzt stood up and walked over to the sniper. Walking through the door he dropped his kit bag on the floor and snapped to attention. "Gunnery Sergeant Rellam Tam, reporting for Duty, Sir." Rellam said, his voice level and calm, remembering almost fondly a time when he would have yelled that sentence instead of simply saying it as a simple fact. Taking his PADD he held it out to the Colonel and waited, stock still, for the colonel to read them. He folded his fingers together, "Interesting jacket you have here." He finally said. This says you're one of the top rated snipers in This Mans Corps... indeed." He looked back up, "Do you take pride in your abilities, Marine?" "No sir," Rellam said simply. The Colonel had his jacket, and he knew from past experience that his psyche profiles were flagged for immediate reading, but he also knew that they said he was perfectly fit for duty, even if he took a different view of that than they would like. Drizzt stood up and walked over to the sniper. "Do you hear voices in your sleep, how's your conscience these days, Gunny?" "No sir," Rellam said, which was the truth, his dreams were usually silent. "My conscience and I have come to an agreement, I do what I have to, and it doesn't complain." Rellam said with a shrug. "Sir, I have never hesitated to take a shot, nor through action or inaction placed my unit, or spotter in any danger that wasn't inherent to the mission at hand." (reply Tallos) (Posted by Ruby) === (Starbase Geneva - Conference Room 2233 - CMO Josh Caskie - 1105) Josh had waited before answering Dralar to see if Nissa would reply first. She had no intention of telling him what name to use with Nissa, and to be honest she was indeed waiting to see what the doctor would prefer her other shipmates to call her. She knew that the Aldean was more of a formal person that Josh was, and as far as Josh was concerned that wasn't always a bad thing, either for a doctor or for a person. People differed and just because Josh could be chatty and social it didn't mean that she expected everyone else in her department to react the same way. Eventually, when her reply came Josh almost cheered. Nissa had held her own and instead of bowing to Josh's informal way of doing things had held out for what she felt more comfortable with. That proved, at least to Josh, that here was someone who felt comfortable in herself and refused to conform simply due to pressure. Her next comment took even Josh by surprise as Nissa began discussing the Skorr database with Lt Dralar. “Thank you for your foresight, Lieutenant Dralar. These records will be exceptionally helpful as we study them in preparation for treating members of your species. We will most likely prioritize the data by keeping all descriptions of common and critical diseases and epidemics, all information related to emergency medical procedures and necessities, any information pertaining to chronic conditions and general Skorr physiology. The data for most of the case studies will almost certainly have to be compressed into an external storage device, backed up, and stored here on the Starbase under secure conditions, this way we have access to them if necessary, but we can still store data on the ship.” Nissa said with a calm nod, looking to Dr Caskie for any additions to her explanation. Josh smiled and nodded at them both. "Dr Whetari is correct. Given the amount of data you are talking about, we will only be able to store common diseases, treatments and medical procedures in the medical database, however, I wonder if it might not the possible to find some spare storage capacity in the EMH database for anything else we might decide is relevant, or necessary. We can't use all of the EMH spare space but perhaps if there is any information we need that the medical database can't hold, we could use some of it's capacity." I formally greet you in return and recognize you as a fellow officer of the Champlain. I will refer to you as Lieutenant Dralar during duty hours, unless you prefer a more complete greeting.” Nissa replied. "Lieutenant Dralar is sufficient until such time as we find ourselves on less familiar terms. I shall abide by your request Doctor Whetari." Dralar clucked quietly again. "As I have been assigned to your vessel, and there are no Skorr physicians to see to any injuries I may have while aboard. I have taken the liberty of asking that the entire Skorr medical database be uploaded to the Starbase's main computers prior to our departure. I know that is not normally my place to do such a thing, but as logistics officer, it was an easy task to fulfill. It is my understanding that the data transfer will be completed within 6 days time, once the data ship arrives at the station. The amount of data is huge and contains every case history of every patient on Skorria, as well as the latest medical techniques." He paused. "I have been told that it will not fit within the Champlain computer's storage medium. So I am uncertain how you will wish to prioritize the data?" Nissa raised an eyebrow at Caskie and took the lead in responding. “Thank you for your foresight, Lieutenant Dralar. The data for most of the case studies will almost certainly have to be compressed into an external storage device, backed up, and stored here on the Starbase under secure conditions, this way we have access to them if necessary, but we can still store data on the ship.” Nissa said with a calm nod, looking to Dr. Caskie for any additions to her explanation. We can't use all of the EMH spare space but perhaps if there is any information we need that the medical database can't hold, we could use some of it's capacity." "That seems as if it would be a good idea. My people chose not to develop holographic physicians for a very good reason. Having encountered one here during my stay on Geneva Station, I am still surprised that they are not deleted outright and the space better utilized for some better application." he replied. "Ah.. It appears as if our illustrious looking first officer is preparing to begin. Perhaps we may continue this conversation later, Josh and Doctor Whetari?" Dralar replied to Dr. Caskie’s statement regarding the EMH. Nissa suppressed a chuckle. Though she personally found the EMH useful, Nissa knew that many officers and some species found the entire idea foolish. She thought of making a comment, but she noticed that other folks in the room started quieting down and it appeared that the meeting would be starting soon. Dralar spoke, also noting the meeting’s impending beginning. "Ah.. It appears as if our illustrious looking first officer is preparing to begin. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid - 1115) Ahmed watched as the various officers filed into the conference room. Several had already helped themselves to refreshments and most had struck up some semblance of a conversation with their fellow officers. Ahmed had taken the time to review every single one of the dossiers that matched the faces in this room. He understood what the records said about them, their efficiency ratings, psyches, awards, commendations and past assignments. But there wasn't one single shred of evidence that would tell him if they would be able to handle what was coming. "Good Morning Everyone!" he began. And waited for the general chatter to subside. "As you all know this is a staff meeting for the newest officers, currently here at Geneva awaiting the arrival of the USS Champlain. The information and discourse that will be presented here for you today is to be kept in confidence. Therefore I would like for all none Starfleet personnel to please wait outside." Ahmed looked at Dralar, and it took the Skorr Lieutenant a few moments to realize that Ahmed was talking about his assistant. Dralar turned and nodded at Sendam, who obediently walked up the stairs with some concerted effort and exited through the doors. "My Name is Lieutenant Commander Ahmed ibn Salid. I have been assigned as the First Officer for the Champlain. I was previously the Chief Engineering Officer aboard the USS nimitz, under the Command of Captain Devon Sash. That said, I am very pleased to make everyone's acquaintance." "Since this meeting is expected to be a rather long one, I encourage each of you to help yourselves to the buffet and drink service during this basic briefing." He paused and looked around the room. " The officers in this room, myself included are replacements from members of the Champlain's officer corps. Many of us will be replacing fellow Starfleet officers that have recently fallen in a conflict with a Doentiz vessel the USS Wyvern." "This means that there will be a good chance that there will be despondency among the ranks at that loss of friends, superiors and family members. The previous captain of the vessel Captain Edward Wolfe was a former shipmate of mine on the Nimitz, where he served as first officer. He and many of the other officers who were lost were good solid men and women who dedicated their lives to upholding the ideals that we all fight for." "The current condition of the vessel means that there will be a great deal of work to be done. There are casualties to treat, departments to reorganize and retrain, fears to overcome, repairs to conduct and training to be undertaken." "Captain Rivers and I have been in discussion concerning all of these matters, and we are confident that you will be able to handle anything that we throw your way." "Make no mistake, the next couple of months will be difficult, grueling time for all of us. It is the intent of Both captain Rivers and myself to conduct a series of reviews, training programs and preparations to ensure that the Champlain is prepared for the eventuality of conflict." "I am certain that some of you have already heard rumors of a coming conflict at the fleet level with Doenitz forces. The truth of the matter is, that eventually, that is a necessity. We can not hope to restore the UFP to her prior glory without undertaking such an endeavor." "If such an offensive will take place is not in question. The only details that we need are when. It is with the intention of preparing for that eventual struggle, that Captain Rivers and I have decided upon a very tough training regiment for the next several months." "We will be honing the Champlain into an effective crew and prepared vessel. While we both understand that she is an explorer, we face the unsettling reality that we are engaged in a life-and-death struggle with a ruthless enemy that will not show us any quarter if we should encounter them." "This has already been evidenced by the brutality that the USS wyvern showed when attacking the Champlain. And while there are likely to be people on both sides who revel in the conflict and the chaos that it brings, I want to press upon each of you the knowledge that there are still honorable members of Starfleet on both sides. These same people that believe just as reverently that they are fighting for the same basic principles that we are." "They just have the misfortune of being incorrect." There was a murmur of laughter at that comment. "Unless I am in a meeting, the door to my office will remain locked open at all times. This is my own interpretation of an open door policy. I hope you will all find my easily accessible, and I trust that if you have any concerns that you feel comfortable bringing them to my attention. I promise you I will give each matter careful consideration, and while I can not promise you that you will always like the results of my decisions, I will endeavor to be as fair as possible." "The Champlain is expected to arrive here at Starbase Geneva at approximately 1000 hours tomorrow. It is my understanding that the Captain is planning to hold a senior staff meeting and ship's review after the vessel has arrived and she has had the time to speak with Lieutenants Frazier and Janeway. There will be an announcement when she has decided upon the best time for the meeting. Each of you need to be prepared to get settled on board in a quick manner once the word is given. So if any of you need to pack please take the time to do so when this meeting is concluded." "There will be a lot of work to do, and there will be more information forthcoming once we have had an opportunity to speak to the senior staff of the Champlain upon her arrival." "In the meantime. I wanted to bring everyone together that was transferring to the ship, so that I could meet them and they could speak with each other. Once we are concluded with a question and answer session, if there is any time remaining after that, there will be time here to mix with your fellow officers and get to know each other. Or you may continue with your shore leave." "Does anyone have any questions for me?" She was keen to meet in person this young officer who had stepped into the breach in an admirable fashion, and had not only forced the surrender of the Nova-class Wyvern but had also held the crew together and brought both ships home. She had been impressed with Lt Janeway's achievements and was keen to form an impression of Lt Frazier. She had spoken with her over the coms but their discussions had been mostly limited to reports and other ship's business. Walking away from the group of officers, she requested the Starbase OPS to inform the Champlain that she would be transporting over, and awaited confirmation. Once received, she headed for the nearest transporter room. === (USS Champlain, Deck 6, Transporter Room 1, CO, Captain Susan Rivers, 1105) As she materialized on the pad, the two transporter officers present came to attention. "Captain Rivers, requesting permission to come aboard," she said formally. "Permission granted, Sir. Welcome to the Champlain." "Thank you," replied Susan, stepping off the pad. "Would you take me to Acting Captain Lieutenant Frazier?" === (USS Champlain - Ready Room – 3O/Acting CO Lt. Bree Frazier - 1107) Bree was in the ready room, making some final arrangements for Edward's memorial service, when the com chirped =^= Lieutenant Frazier, this is Transporter Chief McCrary. Captain Rivers has arrived, Sir. Shall I escort her to you? =^= Bree smiled, grateful for the break. There were so many stories yet to be told…. some that might never be told… but the last month of Bree's life had been eventful, to say the least. She had spoken only briefly with Rivers, and was looking forward to meeting her at last. "Of course!" Bree replied enthusiastically. "Bring her up right away!" Bree closed down her current screen… she could put off her personal invitation to the service to Captain Sash a little while longer. She shook off her ghosts and ordered some chicory coffee from the replicator, getting oriented to the here and now as she waited for her guest… her new Captain! === (USS Champlain - Ready Room – 3O/Acting CO Lt. Bree Frazier and CO Captain Susan Rivers - 1112) Susan looked curiously around the Bridge as her guide, who she had learned was called Chief McCrary, led her to the Ready Room door. "Thank you, Chief," she said. "Much appreciated." As he left, Susan turned back to the door and sounded the chime. On receiving permission to enter, she walked in and as she stepped forward with her hand held out towards the young woman in there, she smiled and said, "I'm very pleased to meet you at last, Lieutenant." Lieutenant Frazier was a tall woman, maybe an inch or so taller than Susan herself, and about the same age. She looked to be the capable officer Susan was sure she was, and no one without a great deal of grit and determination could have achieved what she had. Of that Susan was well aware. Bree returned Captain River's warm greeting with a smile as she shook her hand firmly. ~ She looks so delicate… but the eyes… ~ Bree could sense the strength in the tall Bajoran woman before her… and something else… but what? ~Later… ~ "Likewise," Bree replied simply, with a smile. "Can I offer you some refreshment, Captain Rivers? She glanced at the strong black liquid in the cup on her… Edward's… no, Captain River's desk, and added, "I'm having coffee, but chicory's not for everybody. What's your pleasure?" After the terseness of their previous encounters, Bree was eager to get a sense for this fascinating woman who would spearhead her beloved ship after it was repaired. Susan smiled. "I'd love a coffee," she said gratefully. "My usual poison is raktajino but I'm fond of chicory too. So I'll have what you're having, please. Black, no sugar." "Done", replied Bree as she approached the replicator. "And please, have a seat!" she said informally, gesturing at the nearest chair. There was something there in that request… a hint of rebellion, perhaps? Bree was not one to pry, but there were overtones in her sense of this woman that was pricking her curiosity in spite of herself. She repeated River's request to the rep, and collected the beverage. As she returned to Rivers with it, she couldn't resist the temptation. "Go easy on that, Captain. It's Louisiana gold, a far cry from green tea, but something tells me I need to keep it between us…" Bree grinned, hoping that she wasn't overstepping her bounds. But no doubt Rivers already knew Bree was half-Betazoid… she seemed like the type who did her homework, just as Bree did. There was something going on here that wasn't in the records… not yet anyway… and Bree hoped to find out what it was. She wouldn't pry, but she did stay alert to her tingling senses as she retrieved her own drink and curled herself comfortably into a chair next to Rivers. ~ Who needs a desk between us? ~ "OK, where do we stand right now, Captain?" Bree asked, directly, but in a conversational tone. "I'd like to get to know you a little," Susan said, keeping her own tone conversational. She thought she recognized a look at the back of Bree's eyes. One she had seen in her own mirror, many times, in the months it had taken to limp the Nimitz home to Geneva after the incident with those damned Romulans. She had an inkling that the two of them might be quite alike, although she knew that ideas like that, based on a few minutes talk most of which so far had been over the coms, were as likely to be wrong as right. But she had a feeling about this officer, who had against all odds brought her crew home. "And I think," Susan added, "that it would be a good thing for you to get to know me too. Later we should do the formal stuff about handing over command and all that, but for now, I think we should just talk." Bree listened quietly as Rivers spoke. She knew it wouldn't be hard to reach common ground with her, and she was glad that Rivers had seemingly picked up on Bree's real meaning. She was also, at this time, more interested it where she and her new Captain stood as people than as 'positions'. She smiled. "I'd agree with that," Bree said rather softly. "There's so much more to these ships than durasteel and conduit, and more to us than rank and position… but sometimes I think we forget that…" she said reflectively, looking around at the exoskeleton of a Starship's crew. "We are the heart of it… and at the heart of it, it's who we are that matters." Then she chuckled at herself, and at the strange, repetitive poetry that came from who-knows-where. Then she became more sober… she reached out a little with her mind, decided she could trust this woman as she spoke. "I wonder… I wonder if we leave a part of ourselves behind, if the ships themselves soak up… something… of the people who love her and care for her… even after they're gone…" As much as Bree loved her battered ship, it seemed…. haunted to her sometimes. Then she looked directly at Rivers. "Know what I mean?" she asked. Susan looked at Frazier thoughtfully. "Yes I do," she said after a moment. The Nimitz had always felt to her as if Aragorn, Louise, Irmat and the rest, were all still there somehow. As if, on entering an empty room she had only just missed them. The last few months on the Boudicca had been too hectic for much reflection but it seemed to her the same there too. "It's as if they leave a part of themselves behind, a part that gets absorbed into the ship's soul," she said softly. "Everyone who loves a ship, whether they're living or dead, they'll always be a part of her. And she'll always be a part of them." Bree nodded. "They're part of our cycle of life… but life moves on…" In the quiet, she felt the growing connection between herself and Rivers. She didn't know what their futures would be, but now, they were a part of the same whole. Then it struck her… another mind, a special one, was with them, right there in the room. Again, she locked eyes with Rivers, smiling softly. "And new life begins…. doesn't it?" Susan looked at Bree for a long moment before replying. She caught the meaning behind Bree's words, felt that they were more than a comment about the situation with the ship. She had known before coming here that Frazier was an empath, but even so this surprised her. ~It shouldn't~ she told herself. "Yes," she replied quietly. "Yes it does. Even in the middle of war and death and destruction. Even when it's... unexpected." She suddenly realized with surprise that she no longer felt it was unwanted, and she smiled. "You're right," she said. Bree could feel the conflicted spirit in Rivers. She'd felt it many times before, in her former life, when her friends became pregnant despite all their precautions. Many times, Bree had reminded herself (and others, at need) that empathy was not necessarily the same as sympathy… but now, she felt both. Her heart warmed as she felt the conflict begin to melt into peace. She smiled. "Seems like no matter how far we think we've come, life will find a way to bowl us over when we least expect it", she said, gently but rather lightly. "Let me know if there's anything I can do to help… I could always tell you off-color stories to aid with proper prenatal mental development…" she said, feeling a giggle bubbling up underneath her words. It was time to put death behind her, and celebrate life again, starting with the pregnant Bajoran Captain in the Ready Room… Briefly, Bree remembered the personal invitation she had intended to extend to Sash as soon as Rivers left. But she knew he'd already received an official one… there was really no hurry yet. She stood and moved toward the computer terminal. "Captain, let's get you set up with your command codes… then if you aren't busy right this minute, maybe we could make our way over to the station and you could show me around a bit? I'm getting a little stir crazy here, Sir…" Bree said with a grin. Susan smiled back. "That sounds like a plan - but before we leave I'd like to send a message to all the senior staff? I'd like to call a meeting for departmental heads and assistants at 1400, here in the Observation Lounge. So we can all get to know one another. Then I think there'd be time for lunch, and a look at some of the shops?" Bree affected a look of concern. "Hmmm… well, it's been so long since I went shopping, I'm not sure I'll know how to act… but I'm sure it will come back to me… just like riding a bicycle, once you learn, you never really forget, that's what Madame used to say… we can complete the official transfer of command at the meeting this afternoon." she replied. She grinned broadly, and then she and the Captain took care of business. Bree called her people to the meeting requested by Rivers, while the Captain called up her own. The transfer of command codes was officially accomplished, and the two women agreed on a formal change of command as well, to take place at the afternoon meeting… but for now, they had done all they could do. Then Bree locked up the ready room with one backward glance and a soft sigh, and the pair headed toward the nearest doorway into the land of the living. He then quickly looked around to make sure no one was using the view screen and brought up the data on its large screen. He then got up and looked closely at it. He could see the blue lines which indicated the power flow snaking around the ship. There were areas of the ship which had red lines indicated a lack of power.
