Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1351) "Fine Commander, just haven't gotten out of the lab much," Megan said, giving a shaky smile. "Lab lights aren't always good for the complexion." Ahmed smiled at her. "I can understand that Lieutenant. I hope at some point your planning on enjoying some R&R time while we're here?" (reply Tallos) There was a long pause before the Gorn broke the silence. "What can we help you with, sir?" The large Gorn asked finally, observing the Commander. Salid turned to face the ensign. Serixs was a large stocky being, not at all the sort that Ahmed would want to meet in a dark alley. According to his crew dossier, he was sharp as a shard of fractured essonite crystal. "Well, I just received a report indicating that you were both involved in some special ongoing research. I'd of course love to help get you settled on the ship with adequate space, equipment and personnel, but before I can do that I need to know about your research. What it entails, how hazardous it could be, and an assessment of what resources and personnel you believe you'll need to continue your research." "Do either of you have that information available for me?" "Yes, sir," Serixs said, handing him the PADD he was working on with the data he had gathered on the aerodynamic profile he was given to analyze. "I was just about to show the work to Lieutenant Tallos, if you would care to come along?" (reply Tallos) Ahmed took the offered PADD and flipped through the screens rapidly. The information was detailed and innovative. It had the potential to make a significant change in the way designers thought about aerodynamic principles. After a moment, he looked up and handed the PADD back to the Gorn officer. "Very intriguing work Ensign," he said nodding his head, very impressive. And yes, I'd like to see more of your research." He turned to Tallos. "And of course, yours as well Lieutenant. " (reply Tallos, Ssarumon) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - Outside 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office - Lieutenant JG ACMO Nissa Whetari - 1418) Rolling her head back and forth, Nissa rubbed her eyes and ran her hand up the nape of her neck into her dark red hair. Her trip to the Starbase had been a long one and, while not especially busy, the days of traveling left the young Aldean visibly fatigued. Nissa knew that she should head to her temporary quarters first, drop her rather heavy duffle on a chair and wash up before presenting herself to her new CO. ~Yeah, and I wouldn't be at all tempted to order some food and curl up on the bed with a mug of cocoa and one of my antique books.~ Giving a wry smile, she decided to just report in and get what she needed to do done so that she could rest and get rid of her minor headache in peace. Standing erect out of her slouch, Nissa adjusted her duffle and shifted her medical kit in its old black Terran leather bag. Her rikira, the healer house woman whom she had fostered with since age four, had presented the bag to her upon Nissa's graduation from a medical school on Earth. Yarima knew of Nissa's love of antiques and had found the bag in a small shop on Charles Street. Few of the adults in the healer house approved of one of the first of the new generation going off to Earth, though several recognized that the fear and xenophobia of Aldea's past was waning and that this would be a beneficial experience. Nissa took the bag as a symbol of Yarima's acceptance and pride at her decision to train on Earth. Encountering a Yeoman before the door that she had been pointed to by several crewpersons, Nissa stopped and smiled. "I'm Lieutenant Junior Grade Doctor Nissa Whetari reporting in to Captain Rivers...please?" (Reply Yeoman Addams, Rivers) (Posted by Sarah Feldman) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office - Yeoman Addams - 1419) A pretty young lieutenant in medical or science blue stopped in front of Addams' desk. As the Yeoman looked up enquiringly, the Lieutenant said with a smile, "I'm Lieutenant Junior Grade Doctor Nissa Whetari reporting in to Captain Rivers...please?" Addams smiled back. "Certainly, Lieutenant. One moment please?" She pressed a button on her desk. "Captain Rivers? Lieutenant Dr Nissa Whetari is here." =/\= Thank you, Yeoman, =/\= came the reply. =/\= Send her in please. =/\= "You're to go right in," Addams confirmed to Lieutenant Whetari. "You can leave your bag here with me if you like?" (reply Nissa) (posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office - CO Captain Susan Rivers - 1420) As the door opened and the doctor walked in, Susan took a good look at her. She liked what she saw, the young Aldean looked confident and enthusiastic, although she also looked pretty tired. "Welcome, Dr Whetari," she said with a smile. "Please sit down, won't you? Can I offer you some refreshment? A drink? Something to eat?" (reply Nissa) Susan returned and placed the order from the replicator on the desk. For herself, she'd decided to give the green tea a try again. This time with a slice of lime. "I see you're joining us from the Paladin?" she said, reading Whetari's record. "and... your transport has only just arrived?" She looked at the Aldean. "Doctor, that argues either a commendable enthusiasm or a desire to get a possibly unpleasant chore over and done with as soon as possible." Susan smiled suddenly, forestalling any reply that might have been forthcoming. "No matter. I'm pleased to meet you and *after* you have settled into your temporary quarters and had a rest, I suggest you contact Dr Jennifer Caskie, who will be the CMO on the Champlain. I understand you were the Paladin's CMO so I hope that won't cause any problems for you?" (reply Nissa) Susan nodded. "I'm sure Dr Caskie would be glad of any input you have - although of course, full departmental arrangements will have to wait until the Champlain arrives here. You will also be working with Dr Henna-star, the ACMO currently aboard. No doubt she will be able to tell the two of you a lot about the departmental staff and the current arrangements there." (reply Nissa) Susan sipped her tea and grimaced. The lime was an improvement, but not much of one. She sighed and put the mug back on her desk. "Have you any questions you'd like to ask?" she said. (Reply Whetari, any) (Posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office – Lieutenant JG ACMO Nissa Whatari - 1422) "You're to go right in," The Yeoman confirmed to Nissa. "You can leave your bag here with me if you like?" “Eh…thank you for the offer, but I’m not sure if I could pick it up once I put it down.” Nissa explained with a smile and a nod as she entered the office. The woman that Nissa encountered in the office was not quite what she expected. Captain Rivers was, or appeared to be, a tall Bajoran woman with a more relaxed manner than Nissa was accustomed to. ~Relaxed now, anyway,~ Nissa reminded herself. "Welcome, Dr Whetari," Rivers said with a smile. "Please sit down, won't you? Can I offer you some refreshment? A drink? Something to eat?" “Some White tea with vanilla, no sugar, please.” Nissa responded, wanting to save her chocolate experience until her could reprogram her replicator with her special chocolate blends. "I see you're joining us from the Paladin?" Captain Rivers said, reading what Nissa assumed was her record. "and... your transport has only just arrived?" River took stock of Nissa and replied. "Doctor, that argues either a commendable enthusiasm or a desire to get a possibly unpleasant chore over and done with as soon as possible." If Rivers hadn’t been her new CO, Nissa would have cracked a smile. ~Well, to be fair, a little of both, though more of one,~ Nissa thought. Before she got the chance to reply, the Captain spoke again. "No matter. I'm pleased to meet you and *after* you have settled into your temporary quarters and had a rest, I suggest you contact Dr Jennifer Caskie, who will be the CMO on the Champlain. I understand you were the Paladin's CMO so I hope that won't cause any problems for you?" “No, Captain. It was an interesting challenge learning how to manage and arrange a department, but I am looking forward to working more directly with patients again.” Nissa replied with a slight smile. Captain Rivers nodded. "I'm sure Dr Caskie would be glad of any input you have -although of course, full departmental arrangements will have to wait until the Champlain arrives here. You will also be working with Dr Henna-star, the ACMO currently aboard. No doubt she will be able to tell the two of you a lot about the departmental staff and the current arrangements there." “Every department is always different – I look forward to working with Doctors Caskie and Henna-Star, Captain.” Answering quietly, Nissa watched as Rivers took a sip of whatever was in her cup. She suspected from the look on her Captain’s face that Rivers found the concoction unpleasant at best. The Captain sighed and set her mug down. "Have you any questions you'd like to ask?" she said. Opening her mouth and gaping stupidly in thought for a moment before shutting it quietly, Nissa realized that she couldn’t think of anything in particular to ask the Captain. She did what reading she could with regards to the Champlain on her journey and she would learn more about the medical department from her new Chief. “Not that I can think of at the moment Captain, though I would like to say that I look forward to working with you and that I make a fine cup of hot cocoa if you are interested in changing beverages.” Nissa finished with a friendly and sympathetic smile. (Reply Rivers, iyw) (Posted by Sarah Feldman) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office – CO Captain Susan Rivers - 1425) After a moment or two's consideration, Dr Whetari replied, “Not that I can think of at the moment Captain, though I would like to say that I look forward to working with you and that I make a fine cup of hot cocoa if you are interested in changing beverages,” she added with a friendly and sympathetic smile. Susan glanced down at the contents of her mug, then back up at her new ACMO with an answering smile. "Oh yes please!" she said with genuine gratitude. She sighed. "The thing is," she began, "I'm -" She broke off for a moment. She wasn't used to telling people, but this wasn't just anyone. This was a doctor, and would be working with Josh. So sooner or later she'd get to know anyway. "I'm pregnant," Susan finished, a little reluctantly. She still had moments when she resented it and the restrictions it was putting slowly but surely on her lifestyle. "And I was advised to cut down on the amount of raktajino and coffee that I drink. I'm trying to find something else I like - without much success I'm afraid." She gestured to the mug. "Green tea. No substitute, and not even a pleasant taste. So yes, I would *love* to try your cocoa!" (reply Nissa, room for more iyw) "I'll look forward to that cocoa," Susan said smiling. "But for now, Doctor, I think you should find your quarters and get some rest. Although you can consider yourself on leave for the most part, there will probably be one or two meetings either before the Champlain arrives in two or three days time, or immediately after. In the meantime you might want to contact the FO, Lt Commander Salid and other of your new crewmates, as well as Dr Caskie." She smiled again. "Welcome to the crew, Dr Whetari. I look forward to working with you." (Reply Whetari, iyw) (Posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office – Lieutenant JG ACMO Nissa Whatari - 1427) "Oh yes please!" Rivers said with genuine gratitude, referring to Nissa’s offer of hot cocoa. With a sigh, the Captain continued.” The thing is…I'm -" Rivers hesitated for a moment, seemingly considering her options. Nissa raised a curious eyebrow, with a look of concern on the rest of her face, making her eyes water slightly. "I'm pregnant," Rivers confided to Nissa a bit reluctantly. “And I was advised to cut down on the amount of raktajino and coffee that I drink. I'm trying to find something else I like - without much success I'm afraid." Her CO gestured to the mug. "Green tea. No substitute, and not even a pleasant taste. So yes, I would *love* to try your cocoa!" “I can certainly whip some up. I have a whole set of replicator programs that I carry with me to improve the food in my quarters. I worked part-time in the summer at a chocolate shop before I started Medical school and I learned how to make a wonderful cup of hot chocolate.” Pushing her hair back behind her ear and talking a slightly more relaxed position, Nissa shook her head with a smile. “I enjoy both white and black tea, but, for whatever reason, I have always found Green tea to taste like mown grass smells. I do believe that there are several Bajoran beverages that are recommended during pregnancy, though I am not certain how they taste. You generally should stay away from caffeinated drinks, though I may be able to work with one of the engineers to program a replicator with pregnancy-safe coffee, with all the taste and none of the caffeine or other worrisome compounds. Raktajino may pose more of a challenge, though. I could also have the replicator alter my white, milk, and dark cocoa drinks to remove the caffeine, though it is non-existent in white chocolate and negligible in the other two. I will warn you, though, that my hot cocoa is rather like drinking a melted bar of chocolate than most other cocoas that you may have encountered.” She finished, already wondering how she could create a replicated coffee that was safe for those pregnant. ~How to…hmmm…Eh…I should focus on getting it right for my Captain first,~ Nissa thought. She considered congratulating Rivers on her pregnancy, but she remembered a friend in medical school who found all the congratulations, questions, and well-wishes tiresome after a time, especially through the first few months. It was a nerve-wracking period full of changes and fears and Nissa didn’t see any need to add to that. (Reply Rivers iyw, room for more) "I'll look forward to that cocoa," Rivers said with a smile. "But for now, Doctor, I think you should find your quarters and get some rest. Although you can consider yourself on leave for the most part, there will probably be one or two meetings either before the Champlain arrives in two or three days time, or immediately after. In the meantime you might want to contact the FO, Lt Commander Salid and other of your new crewmates, as well as Dr Caskie." Her new CO smiled again. "Welcome to the crew, Dr Whetari. I look forward to working with you." “Thank you, Captain – and I you.” Nissa replied with a smile and a nod, before departing the office and heading to her quarters. ~Sleep and chocolate...precious, precious sleep.~ (Reply Rivers iyw) (Posted by Sarah Feldman) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - 52nd Fleet HQ Administrative offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office – CO, Captain Susan Rivers - 1429) Susan found her mouth watering at the doctor's description of the hot chocolate. She appreciated the offer of the caffeine-free coffee too, though she did wonder how well it would taste. ~and no buzz~ "Thank you - I'd really appreciate that!" Susan said. Once Dr Whetari had left, Susan scrolled through the list of reports awaiting her attention. One caught her eye, and she read it first. It concerned a near-riot on one of the Promenade levels, involving a group of Klingons and some of the Boudicca marines assigned to the Champlain. When she reached the end, her eyebrows shot up and she tapped her commbadge. "Captain Rivers to Commander Salid. Can you spare me a few minutes of your time, please?" NRPG: I don't believe anyone has actually posted that they did or did not inform Susan about the riot and the arrests. So at this point it could be from anyone, although I know from Daniel's post that Ahmed was thinking about it ;) First one to post it gets the brownie points :p RPG: (Reply Salid, Any) (posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva -Turbolift-- FO- Lt. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1430) Ahmed was reviewing the requirements for the special research on his way back up to the administrative level when his commbadge chirped for attention. =^=Captain Rivers to Commander Salid. Can you spare me a few minutes of your time, please?=^= "Of course Captain. I'm in the turbolift heading to the administrative levels currently. I will be there shortly." he replied. (reply Rivers) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Administrative Offices, Captain Rivers's Temporary Office - CO, Captain Susan Rivers - 1431) Receiving Salid's assurance that he was on his way set Susan searching through the pile of PADDs. She found what she was looking for, a report from her new FO on the 'incident' on the Promenade. She laid it side by side with the report she had received from Starbase Security, and compared them. A smile spread across her face as she did so. (reply none) (posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Administrative Offices- FO- Lt. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1435) As Ahmed approached the Captain's office he spotted Yeoman Addams and smiled. "Yeoman," he said, " Could you please advise Captain Rivers that I have arrived as requested?" (reply Addams) After a few moments, Ahmed was ushered into the Captain's Office. He stood easy. "You wanted to see me Captain?" he inquired. (reply Rivers, Addams) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Administrative Offices- Yeoman Addams - 1436) Addams recognised the commander as he approached her desk, smiling. "Yeoman," he said, "Could you please advise Captain Rivers that I have arrived as requested?" "Certainly, Commander," she replied, smiling back at him. ~He really is very good-looking...~ She pressed the comm-button on her desk. "Captain Rivers, Commander Salid is here to see you, as requested." =/\=Thank you, Yeoman. Please ask him to come in.=/\= Addams twinkled up at the commander. "You can go in now," she said, smiling. ~I wonder what he does when he's off-duty?~ (reply none) (posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Administrative Offices, Captain Rivers's Temporary Office - CO, Captain Susan Rivers - 1437) "You wanted to see me Captain?" Salid inquired, standing easy. "Sit down, Number One," Susan replied. She waited until he had done so before continuing. "I received a report from someone in Starbase Security about a 'near riot' on one of the Promenade decks. The report mentions the involvement of some of the Boudicca marines attached to the Champlain," she added, watching his face. "The report names those arrested, but makes no mention of the assistance of the First Officer of the Champlain in sorting things out afterwards." (reply Ahmed iyw) "I also have a report from my First Officer on the incident. If I may say so, Commander, masterfully done. Rather more masterfully than Lieutenant Horatio Ortez, the Security Chief here on the base, managed with his. In fact," she said, considering the matter, "He strikes me as the kind of of jobsworth who would be best employed as Janitorial Supervisor. I'd be surprised if he's long in the job once Lise - that is, Captain Arianna - gets back. I don't know if he bothered to speak to you himself?" (reply Ahmed) Susan nodded. "I'm not surprised. Anyway, I had missed your report somehow first time through, and I had wanted to ask you to look into the matter for me. But I see you have already dealt with it, so it only remains for me to tell you how impressed I am with the way you did it." She grinned suddenly. "And what an excellent report you submitted. I really do think we're going to deal well together." She thought for a moment, then added, "I think it would be a good idea if we got to know one another a little, don't you? I'd like you to come to dinner, maybe not tonight as today has been rather busy - how about tomorrow evening? And if there's anyone you'd like to bring along, they would be welcome too. As it's meant to be a social occasion, not a work one." (Reply Salid) (Posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva -Administrative Offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office-- FO- Lt. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1440) "Sit down, Number One," Susan replied. He nodded and complied. "I received a report from someone in Starbase Security about a 'near riot' on one of the Promenade decks. The report mentions the involvement of some of the Boudicca marines attached to the Champlain," she added, watching his face. "The report names those arrested, but makes no mention of the assistance of the First Officer of the Champlain in sorting things out afterwards." "Not an unimaginable oversight captain," Ahmed replied. "I also have a report from my First Officer on the incident. If I may say so, Commander, masterfully done. Rather more masterfully than Lieutenant Horatio Ortez, the Security Chief here on the base, managed with his. In fact," she said, considering the matter, "He strikes me as the kind of jobsworth who would be best employed as Janitorial Supervisor. I'd be surprised if he's long in the job once Lise - that is, Captain Arianna - gets back. I don't know if he bothered to speak to you himself?" "No Captain, I didn't have that pleasure I spoke with a Lieutenant Parsons. He was the presiding officer and was most discrete." Ahmed replied. Susan nodded. "I'm not surprised. Anyway, I had missed your report somehow first time through, and I had wanted to ask you to look into the matter for me. But I see you have already dealt with it, so it only remains for me to tell you how impressed I am with the way you did it." Ahmed just regarded her, unsure whether her praise was genuine or sarcastic. It was a thin line sometimes. She grinned suddenly. "And what an excellent report you submitted. I really do think we're going to deal well together." ~Okay I think genuine.~ he thought as she continued. She thought for a moment, then added, "I think it would be a good idea if we got to know one another a little, don't you? I'd like you to come to dinner, maybe not tonight as today has been rather busy - how about tomorrow evening? And if there's anyone you'd like to bring along, they would be welcome too. As it's meant to be a social occasion, not a work one." Ahmed thought about it for a moment. He just let the compliment pass him by. He understood the captain's statement well enough or at least he thought he did. Time would bear his assessment out. "Of course Captain. I'd be delighted to attend. Although I'm afraid I find myself a bit short of female companionship currently. I'll probably attend without an escort. Shall I bring anything?" (reply Rivers) "Very good." Ahmed replied, then wishing to get back to business changed the subject. "I have also finished all the furnishing transfer requests for the new crew and families transferring on to the Champlain after she arrives. I am currently working on the special equipment requests and space allotments for Lieutenant Tallos and Ensign Ssarumon. If everything goes according to schedule, I'll have a rough outline of our training regiment ready for your first review by tomorrow 1300 hours." (reply Rivers) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva -Administrative Offices, Captain Rivers' Temporary Office-- CO Captain Susan Rivers - 1441) "Of course Captain. I'd be delighted to attend," Salid replied. "Although I'm afraid I find myself a bit short of female companionship currently. I'll probably attend without an escort. Shall I bring anything?" Susan shook her head. "No need, Commander. It's purely an informal occasion, though, so no need to wear uniform." "Very good." the FO replied, then changed the subject. "I have also finished all the furnishing transfer requests for the new crew and families transferring on to the Champlain after she arrives. I am currently working on the special equipment requests and space allotments for Lieutenant Tallos and Ensign Ssarumon. If everything goes according to schedule, I'll have a rough outline of our training regiment ready for your first review by tomorrow 1300 hours." Susan noticed his change of subject but said nothing, although she wondered if Salid were a little wary of the idea of socialising with his Captain. She felt, however, that since they would have to work closely together it could only be a good thing if they were to get to know one another better. She was only too aware of the need for the CO and FO to function effectively as a team, and had no intention of repeating earlier mistakes in that area. "Very good, Commander," she said aloud. "Please make sure you also liaise with the staff on board the Champlain. I'm hoping to establish contact with her acting Commanding Officer later this afternoon, and I'll fill you in on what I learn aferwards. So far I only know what Command has told us; I'd like to get the details from Lieutenant Frazier myself. I get the impression that there's more to the story of this ship and her crew than the bare details we've been given so far." (reply Ahmed iyw, room for more) She handed him some PADDs. "These are the crewmembers who've reported in to me so far; there are also details of two transfers." She smiled wryly. "Already. One is the CONN officer who brought the new shuttles and runaobuts - it seems Fleet Command has more need of his skills than we do. And the second is Ensign Linskens, who was to have been assigned to the Science Department. In view of the psychological report from the counsellor on the Boudicca, Command has decided to go with his recommendation that Linskens be kept away from combat duty until his sessions with Starflleet counselling are completed. And since the Champlain is being reassigned temporarily as a ship of the line, he will remain here on Geneva for the time being." The memory of John Linskens dragging himself to the Boudicca's Sickbay after his encounter with the marines from the Exeter who had boarded the ship, and the expression on his face then, would stay with her for a long time. And then there were his experiences on that d*mned mission when they'd gone to look for Eva and everything that could have gone wrong had seemed to do so; not to mention what she'd picked up from reading his service record... no, all in all, keeping Linskens away from combat could only help his recovery. Belatedly she remembered that Salid would have known Linskens briefly on the Nimtiz. "I believe you served with him for a short time?" she asked. "I didn't know him well on the Boudicca, but I owe him a lot, as do quite a few others, and I believe the decision to transfer him to the Geneva Science Department to be in his best interests." (repy Ahmed iyw, room for more) Susan looked at her FO thoughtfully for a moment, then said. "Mr Salid, whilst I very much appreciate the way you're throwing yourself into your new position, I recommend you use part of your time here at Geneva to have some R&R too; once the ship gets here that might not be an option. I don't want to have to make it an order, but I will if I have to. I don't know when any of us will get the chance again, and we all need a break from active service, even if only for a short time, in order to function to the best of our abilities. I will be doing so myself, and I expect you to do the same." (reply Salid) (posted by Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - Deck 24, Promenade - CO Captain Rivers and CMO Ensign Dr 'Josh' Caskie - 1500) Susan raised a hand in greeting as she saw Josh waiting for her at the appointed place. "I'm glad you could make it," she said. "I could do with some serious retail therapy after S- after all the meetings I've had." Josh grinned in greeting, but taking her medical tricorder scanned Susan. Noticing the Captain's reaction, Josh smiled. "Don't even think of rolling your eyes at me like that. I am still your doctor and I still need to keep a close eye on you. So you can roll your eyes at me all you want and it won't make a blind bit of difference." Susan poked her tongue out at Josh and then grinned. "If all the poking and prodding you've given me so far are anything to go by, then I'd be surprised if that thing tells you anything you don't know already. But if it makes you happy... So what does it say?" she finished curiously, trying to look at the instrument. Josh grinned back at Susan. "It says that you are indecently healthy although some of your aminopeptides do seem to be out of balance at present." Sitting down at the nearest table and watching Susan join her Josh signalled the nearest waiter over and gave her order. "Lapsang Suchong, no milk and no sugar either and can you make a real Bajoran Root Tea?" The waiter nodded and Josh told him to bring that too. Looking across at Susan she smiled. "You are probably missing some main nutrients that Bajorans normal have in their diet., Bajoran Root Tea will probably help provide most if not all of them. " Susan sighed. "I was just going to ask what amino-thingies are. But now I know. They like nasty stuff that tastes like targ-p... tastes very unpleasant." She looked at Josh. "And if you think I'm going to drink that disgusting stuff, instead of raktajino or a decent coffee... I'd rather drink green tea and that's saying something!" Josh simply smiled across at Susan and raised an eyebrow. "Well, by all means if you really want to drink green tea then yes you can. I don't think it will do you any harm. But if you think we are leaving here before you drink the root tea then I suggest you get comfortable. I have nothing else to do just now. Do you?" Susan rolled her eyes. "Fine - but I want something to take the taste away!" She addressed the waiter. "I'll have... a large slice of almond tart, with a side order of Andorian yoghurt and chillies." She looked at Josh a little defiantly. Josh nodded knowing that she had won this argument and knew that every other one would be easier. "I know that Root Tea has," and she smiled, "how shall I put it,,,, a particularly vile taste until you get used to it. But, you will probably find as your pregnancy progresses that you find it more and more pleasing. It is something that Bajoran women need during this time. Have you been sampling various teas in the hope of finding something you liked?" Susan nodded. "Yes - but only because I heard that I shouldn't be drinking so much coffee!" Josh raised her eyebrow again and laughed. "Ok, now I believe that we have some boots to go and find. I would suggest two sizes. One for your normal feet, which we should just about get away with and one wider. Your feet will spread soon." Susan looked at her. "My feet will WHAT?" she said, horrified. She gave Josh a long, considering look. "And what *else* - apart from the obvious - can I expect in the way of physical changes?" she demanded. Josh put down her cup and regarded Susan slightly amused. "Well apart from the obvious, and I take it you do understand the obvious symptoms of pregnancy, yes your feet will swell. You are carrying a lot more weight on them. That means that your entire way of walking will change and will keep changing as the baby begins to grow. Your pelvis will move as the baby grows to allow it to be born. Are you sure you want me to continue just now? These are things you really do not need to worry about until later." "I'd rather know the worst to expect," Susan said grimly. "But if it's that bad you better save the rest till later. I want to enjoy this afternoon!" She poured the yoghurt and chillies over the tart, then swallowed some tea as quickly as she could before taking a large spoonful of the tart. Josh sighed, looked over at Susan and finally reached over and taking a spoon removed all the chillies off the plate. "That won't help your digestion. Go easy on the spices please, now, shoes?" Susan gave an exaggerated sigh. "No coffee, no spices... all I can say is making love had better still be ok." She shook her head. "No wonder I didn't want to have kids!" She regarded the remains of the tea with distaste. "And this to drink too." She swallowed the rest in one gulp and pulled a face. "OK, shoes. But no more vile drinks!" Josh smiled across at Susan and grinned. "One cup of Bajoran Root Tea a day is enough. and now thankfully we do go shopping. I have seen the most beautiful dress, but whether I will ever use it...............and the shoe shop is just two doors before it. Can we go now or are you going to sit their and complain again." Josh stood up and looked down at Susan. Susan grinned as she stood up. "No, I can complain as I walk," she joked. "And talking about dresses - I suppose I should look for something in the sack line, for later? and something really nice, for now... Where did you say that shop was?" (Reply none) (posted by Marilyn and Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - Deck 24, Promenade - CO Captain Rivers and CMO Ensign Dr 'Josh' Caskie - 1520) Susan and Josh walked into the shop. It was fairly dark, not somewhere you would think that would be somewhere that you would get a decent pair of shoes, but Josh prodded Susan forward and began talking to the alien behind the counter explaining what was needed. In no time at all Susan had been placed in and chair and her feet had been measured. The alien hesitated for a second and then turned to Susan and asked how far pregnant she was. Susan stared at the shopkeeper. "How did you..." she began. Then she looked at Josh. "Did you tell him?" she asked. Josh howled with laughter as Susan turned towards her and asked if she had told him about her pregnancy. "Susan, this shop specialises in fitting shoes, Do you think they are stupid, do you think they have never looked at someone who is pregnant before. Would you rather get your boots here or would you rather go back to the base and explain to them?" "I didn't think it showed yet," Susan muttered crossly. She looked at the alien. "I'm six weeks pregnant, if you want to know." The shopkeeper smiled at her, "No, not yet, but your feet tell me that you will need a slightly wider boot soon. I can make you two pairs if you want. One that will will fit your more narrow Bajoran feet at present and one that will be comfortable once you are heavily pregnant." "Yes, please!" Susan said, repressing a shudder at the words 'heavily pregnant'. That sounded remarkably like it was going to be distinctly unpleasant. She glanced at Josh and wondered how human women put up with all this for nine months instead of five. At least she *hoped* she only had to put up with it for five. "I'd also like some shoes, with heels, black if you have them and umm........ yes dark green ones too. For going out." Josh smiled and nodded knowing that it didn't matter how many heeled shoes that Susan ordered she wouldn't be wearing them for long. Turning to look somewhere else so that she wouldn't be seen to smile she found herself facing one of the other counters, facing a plant. This was something that Josh was not interested in at all so turning away she looked back at Susan and taking a step towards her had just began to smile when the alarm went off. Josh whirled round towards Susan just as she met her and both of them began to dive out the door. The laughter from both of the salesmen finally stopped Josh and she turned towards them. Glaring at them she waited for an apology as Susan came back through the door. One of them stopped laughing enough finally to explain that the alarm was not an alarm and pointed towards the counter. Josh gazed over there but all she could see was a small plant sitting there and bristling she prepared to shout at someone. Susan, looking in the direction of the pointing hand and seeing nothing but a plant, turned back to the shopkeeper. "Well if it's not an alarm," she said, raising her voice slightly to be heard over the noise, "then what is it and could you kindly turn it off?" The owner smiled across at Susan. "I can assure you it will turn itself of once it's new owner accepts it." He glared across at Josh still standing at the door but Josh kept ignoring him. Susan took a deep breath. "Please," she said loudly, the noise really was deafening, "*What* is it that the new owner has to accept, exactly?" She had guessed from the glare that he meant Josh by 'the new owner' but what was she supposed to 'accept'? The owner merely smiled. "I apologise for not being more precise. This is an Alderan Pitcher plant and I am sorry but once it decides who it wants no-one dare argue with it." He glared across at Josh and smiled. " It seems to be yours now." "Oh no, oh no, oh, definitely no. I don't want a pet, a child, or whatever that damn plant is. No way is it mine." Susan began to laugh. "Oh yes it is, Josh! I heard about these once. He's right, the only way to stop it is for you to accept it." She sat down in the chair again, still laughing. The noise was giving Josh a headache and when Susan turned around and told her that the only option Josh had was to accept the plant then Josh simply smiled. "Oh I don't think so." She eyed the plant up and down and smiled. "I'm fairly sure that I can run faster that it can." Susan shook her head. "You don't realise, it won't stop that noise until you accept it. And I'm pretty sure the shopkeeper would be within his rights to insist you remove your property from his shop. It's a plant, Josh. A noisy one at the moment but a plant. How much trouble can it be?" Josh groaned, "Noisy is the problem honestly. Can we not just shoot it please? And no, I never agreed to accept that monstrosity. It is not mine and I refuse to take charge of it." Susan stood up and walked over to the plant, which continued to scream. Ignoring the noise with difficulty she picked it up and walked over to Josh. As they got nearer, the plant got quieter and as Susan reached Josh it stopped screaming and began to make a soft, crooning noise. Josh watched Susan carry the plant over to her, and trying not to wince back she stood there as the plant suddenly started to coo as it came near her. "You owe me Susan." Josh grinned. "You owe me big I think." Josh grinned widely. "Ok, give me it. It's fairly obvious that I have to take it. So I will take it. What the heck do I do with it?" (Reply any, none) (Posted by Marilyn and Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Star Base Geneva - Deck 24, Promenade - CO Captain Rivers and CMO Ensign Dr 'Josh' Caskie - 1545) Josh, having finally had Susan pass her the plant noticed that it had gone quiet. She hadn't entirely given up leaving it somewhere, but for the moment she was happy to take it if only to get out of the shop. "Once you are finished picking shoes do you think we can move on?" Susan looked at Josh in surprise. "Sure," she said. "Let me just sign for these and we'll go." The shopkeeper proffered a PADD to Susan and she checked the details before pressing her thumb to it to confirm the purchases. "Thank you, Captain," the shopkeeper said, "Your boots will be delivered in two days, as will the shoes you ordered. And you have your other shoes right here," he handed her two bags, with a small bow. "Thank you for your custom. Please call again and if you're satisfied with your boots, please recommend us to your colleagues." Susan smiled. "Thank you for your help." Taking the bags with her, she nodded to Josh. "Ready to hit the dress shop?" she said hopefully. "And there's this lingerie shop I've heard about too...?" Josh, juggling the plant, simply stared at Susan "Oh yes. I have my eye on this dress, but I am not sure I will ever use it, so I want your opinion." Walking two doors down they both stopped and eyed up the dress in the window. Josh simply sighed and turned to Susan. "Ok, tell me what you think. Is it me?" Susan looked at the dress, then at Josh, and smiled. "Oh yes!" she said. "It really is! That teal colour will set off your hair perfectly. And the cut is perfect. You have to have it, it could have been made for you!" Without waiting for a reply, Susan grabbed Josh's arm and dragged her into the shop. "My friend would like to try on the teal dress in the window." As the saleswoman went to get it, Josh gave the plant to Susan. As soon as Josh vanished into the changing room, the plant began to scream. Susan ignored the looks she was getting, and when Josh reappeared, she said over the racket,"You HAVE to have that dress! It's wonderful!" Josh smiled and nodded. "I agree but the price........ oh who cares. Honestly I can afford it this once, so,,,,,,,,, wrap it up now before I change my mind please." She turned and motioned to the saleswoman in charge before she changed her mind. With relief Susan handed the plant back to Josh, and the silence was deafening but a relief. She spent ten minutes choosing a couple of dresses, one in a deep green that matched her eyes, and one a midnight blue velvet she fell in love with. "How about something to go underneath them?" she asked as they left the shop happily carrying their purchases. Josh smiled over at Susan. "I have no objection to you looking for that. But I don't need anything like that myself thank you very much." Susan just grinned as they entered the lingerie shop. "Josh, EVERY woman needs something like that." She showed her some pretty underwear, which felt soft and luxurious to the touch. "Now tell me you don't want something like that next to your skin?" Josh simply smiled. "I think it will look good on you. I think the white looks good. I'm not so sure about the red and the black. However this might be something you need to choose for yourself. My input might not be exactly what you need." Susan smiled. "To be honest I like all three. I'll take all three sets," she said to the saleswoman, then waited as her purchase was wrapped. Having checked and authorised the bill, she turned to Josh. "Where now?" she asked as they left the shop. "Well to be honest we are done," Josh answered. "Unless there is anywhere else you want to go. And to be honest I am pretty fed up carrying this stupid plant around." "I need to find a pet shop," Susan said. "I want to get Pangur a new bed. But I can do that alone, if you'd rather get your... plant back to your quarters?" Josh grinned. "Do you think the pet shop would take this plant?" Susan laughed. "Yes, right up to the point where it starts screaming as you leave." "Ah but do we really need to tell them that. I can run really fast. It certainly won't catch up. Just this once give me a break please. I can be out of the starbase and back on the ship before this pitiful little thing realises that I am gone" Susan grimaced. "You heard it in the dress shop. All you had to do was start to walk into the changing room. You're stuck with it, Josh." She smiled wryly. "And maybe now you know a little how I feel." Josh eyed Susan up and down and frowned. "Don't even go there. Been there done that." Susan looked at Josh seriously. "You telling me you didn't want your child?" she asked in a low tone. "Because I promise you, having children was not on my agenda at all. Not ever. And if we hadn't been stuck on that stupid planet for so long, maybe I wouldn't be now. This was not, EVER, supposed to happen to me. But now I don't have an option. I'm stuck with it. And I'm not going to pretend that something good didn't come out of it, of course it has, but that doesn't mean I have to like the reason for it." Josh looked at Susan and sighed. Yes we both wanted our child, but I will not tell you that is was not easy bringing him up on his own. But to be honest you need to stop fighting what is happening to you and start accepting it Once you do you will get on a lot better." Susan sighed. "I know you're right. But it's hard. One way and another I've been fighting my whole life. But I'll make you a deal. You accept your fate with that plant and I will accept mine." She smiled. "So you take it back and put your feet up - NOT on top of the plant! - and I'll get Pangur's bed and go back to the office for an hour or so. Deal?" Josh sighed, eyed up the plant and then eyed up Susan. Sighing she nodded. "Ok, deal." (Reply any, none) (Posted by Marilyn and Liz) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Administrative Offices- Conn/Ops- Lt. JG. Dralar- 1600) Dralar had watched as the station security had managed to defuse the riot using their phasers. It was hardly a fair fight. They outnumbered the rioters by a considerable margin and most of them didn't put up a very spirited fight once the Security force had arrived. Dralar had been fortunate in that he had withdrawn well before anyone had arrived to quell the disagreement. He had returned to his quarters to wash the Klingon blood from his foot scales. The thick purple substance was repulsive smelling and Dralar decided that anything with blood that smelled that badly, wasn't worth eating. He had returned to his previous task afterwards, which had been to report in to his new Commanding officer, Captain Susan Rivers. He stepped into the common outer office that Captain rivers shared with several other Starfleet officers in the headquarters. He had himself, until only recently, been assigned to a similar area on the far side of the station. He stopped at the first desk that he came to and asked the ensign to point out where Captain Rivers office was located. With a slightly frightened look on her face, she finally jabbed a finger towards the correct door. The Office door was flanked on one side by a human female yeoman. She was busy working on a report. Dralar approached her. "Excuse me Yeoman" he said, his Universal translator picking up the sounds he uttered sub vocally, then adjusting them for volume. "I wish to present myself to Captain Rivers for her review." (reply Addams) "Yes, of course, how rude of me. I am Dralar 45th prince of Skorria, Keeper of the Great Sky Key of Harridan, and Lieutenant Junior Grade in Starfleet, duly assigned to the USS Champlain in capacity of Operations Specialist and Helm Officer." he replied (reply Addams) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Starbase Geneva - Administrative Offices - Yeoman Addams - 1601) "Excuse me Yeoman," a voice said, "I wish to present myself to Captain Rivers for her review." Addams looked up, to see what at first appeared to be a giant bird standing in front of her. After a momentary surprise, she noticed that he was wearing an adapted Starfleet uniform. She blinked in surprise, then her professionalism asserted itself. "If I may have your name, Sir?" she managed to say with a creditable attempt at sang-froid, as if she dealt with bird-people all the time. "Yes, of course, how rude of me. I am Dralar 45th prince of Skorria, Keeper of the Great Sky Key of Harridan, and Lieutenant Junior Grade in Starfleet, duly assigned to the USS Champlain in capacity of Operations Specialist and Helm Officer." he replied. ~oh lor, do I address him as your Highness, or Lieutenant?~ she wondered as she checked her list of new crew. Eventually she decided on Lieutenant, as he was not only a Starfleet officer but assigned as an officer on the Champlain. "I'm afraid Captain Rivers is out of the office at the moment, Lieutenant Dralar," she said as she looked back up at the Skorr. "But she's due back at 1700 hours. You are welcome to wait here, or return, whichever is most convenient for you?" she added with an apologetic smile. You are welcome to wait here, or return, whichever is most convenient for you?" Dralar cocked his head in a decidedly bird-like fashion. He turned and surveyed the waiting area. After a moment's thought he looked back at the yeoman. "While I appreciate the offer, I do not see any furnishings that will meet my exacting body requirements. And since my people are not well know for waiting, but are instead a very active species, I think I shall simply return after the captain has done so." He regarded her again. She was so soft and vulnerable looking, but then again most species he encountered appeared that way. They were quite resilient, however, and very capable of handling themselves in most situations. "Might, I set an appointment for 1710 hours, to ensure that the Captain has adequate time to receive me?" (reply Addams) "Thank you, I find you a most agreeable sort. I shall return at the appointed time." he replied then left the area. Anything come up whilst I was out?" "A Lieutenant Dralar came by, Sir, wanting to report in. He made an appointment for 1710." "Thank you," Susan said as she made her way towards her office. "Send his details to my terminal, would you? And bring me a coff- an Idaarian spiced tea, please. With a couple of sandwiches. Tomato would be nice." "Yes, Sir," Addams replied as her boss entered her office. She sent the requested information to the Captain's terminal and then hurried off to the canteen for her order. A half-eaten bowl of a spicy Aldean soup was on the table next to a plate of bread, butter, and roasted vegetables. Mostly grazing while reading a rather interesting alternate history novel on her PADD, she considered recording a personal log now that she was on the Star Base, but then Nissa realized that she didn’t have much to say. She enjoyed her time spent on the Paladin, but she was happy to be relieved of her CMO duties. ~It will be nice to get back to just seeing patients and such,~ Nissa thought, wondering what sort of challenges she would face on the Champlain. Her new CMO might have a better idea than her, though there was no way to know until they were on the ship. Having to meet all sorts of new people was easily the least pleasant aspect of the job, as there was a part of Nissa that would rather just hunker down in a lab somewhere, listen to music, and be left to her own devices. ~You shouldn’t think like that; this is the beginning of a new adventure.~ ~Oh…do shut up. Adventure is a bit dramatic, don’tcha think? Was watching patients die of the plague really that much of an adventure? How much do you think all your simpering and soft words soothed their pain, when you couldn’t find the cure fast enough?~ ~I did my best. Maybe I helped people and maybe I didn’t, but at least I was there to try to help. What else can anyone do?~ Nissa answered her more cynical, doubting side. Sighing, she picked up the bowl and sipped her soup. Aldeans preferred their cuisine well spiced, usually with a good deal of heat, but also with interesting flavor combinations. The bread was a nice addition that Nissa discovered while studying on Earth. She had been amazed at some of the blander cuisines, though she had found foods in most parts of the world that she enjoyed. Regarding a roasted chunk of eaomti, a root vegetable similar to potatoes on Earth, crisp on the outside and mealy on the inside with the scent of garlic and ground trieka, Nissa wondered if she could have done more.
