Tollian Yalix-1251) ”I think it’s going to be tuff one,” Carft quoted with a grin. "Any suggestions you think we need to look at specifically?" Donald asked, as he picked up his padd to go over the current ship status. Carft gave a look at Tollian, “I don’t think so, Tollian?” Carft asked a bit unsure. "Nothing other than the ones I have already mentioned." (reply none) (USS Boudicca - Corridor-AOPS Lt. Tollian Yalix-1253) “So … what do you think about the new crew and staff?” Carft asked as Tollian and he were both walking through the corridors. "So far I can appreciate Johnson's amiability and Commander Stakes efficiency. I have not yet had an opportunity to meet the new ACMO. I also believe that the engineering department is in good hands." the Efrosian replied. Carft nodded as an indication of understanding “You know actually I’m a bit worried about this new mission more then I’m letting on, what do you think?” he asked. Tollian stopped. "If you want my opinion on the mission, I can only say that I have been preparing for this moment, or a moment like it my entire life. My people believe that their life is lived towards the accomplishment of a single great fateful moment in time. If you are always preparing then when that moment arrives, you will be ready to fulfill your destiny. If you are not ready, then you're destiny remains unfulfilled and when you leave this life you are reincarnated to try again." He started walking again, motioning to Carft to accompany him. "There is a cycle to this belief. There are different types of destiny. There is the destiny of Love, Honor, Compassion, Duty, Peace, and Prosperity. An Efrosian lives through consecutive lives, through reincarnation. Once they have fulfilled all 6 destinies, they then transcend to another plane of existence. To an Efrosian, the body is merely a physical vessel to hold the being that is the truest form of our people. If they fail to fulfill a single destiny, they begin anew. In this manner we are always growing as a people and learning what it means to be at harmony with the universe." "So when I tell you that I am prepared. I mean just that. I have no worries that I will perform badly. I have no sorrow for the thought of lost comrades or even the loss of my own life, because I believe that we will all be reincarnated and eventually we will all transcend." (reply Carft) (posted by Daniel Greene) (USS Boudicca - Donald's Office - OPS Lt (jg) Donald Johnson - 1400) Donald was talking to Chrystine Nicklaus, a chief in the department, who he found quite helpful since he had met her when he came onboard. She really helped him get to know the enlisted men on the ship, a task that wasn't easy at times. But having been an enlisted man himself, he knew it could boost morale when one of the higher ups visited or at least made the effort. "Okay, that's what I need you to do. I know it's tedious, but I'll be helping out too." Donald said trying to be encouraging. Chrystine bit her lower lip as she stared at the padd in front of her that entailed the task they had been discussing. Finally she said, "Okay, well I definitely want to make sure if I need one of these that they work, so I'll get on it. And don't worry, sir" she said, looking up with a wry smile, "I'll make sure to save some for you." Donald laughed, "It's a deal. We'll start first thing in the morning." "Aye, aye" she said as she hopped off her chair and headed for the door. "Bright and early" He chuckled again before returning to the stack of padds on his desk. He noticed a message was waiting for him. ~Ahh... the commander has responded.~ he thought as he accessed the message. ~Hmmm... wow, that's a challenge. ~ he thought as he sat back after reading the message. ~Well, better get started, where are those specs for Mako's~ He tapped off a quick message back to Stakes that said, "Message acknowledged, we'll get right on it with the science department." (USS Boudicca -- Turbolift - Capt Falthgood - 15.24) "... Now, can we dispense with the bull?" "I suppose..." Arianna began, glad that for the first time in months she could be herself. "That, I have no choice. And either I comply, or end up in the brig. Captain" she said wryly. "What do you want?" Falthgood grinned large, the very image of a deaths-head. "Better, I'd hate to start with blackmail so very early in our conversation." He turned slightly, "Computer, resume." The turbolift began again. "We will begin again when we're in more... secure... surroundings." (reply: if desired) The turbolift closed not many moments later, and the door opened. Falthgood stepped out with the Captain right behind him... and straight into three phaser-rifles in their face. His hand-picked Security and Marine watchdog crew was looking at him like he was some interesting specimen from the depths of Tellar. "Captain Falthgood." The Captain of the Guard said with his finger on the trigger. "Passcode." Falthgood grinned again. He'd instituted some strong security for everyone, including himself. Shape shifters weren't common, but they weren't uncommon either. "Mamma's gonna take us by the hand and lead us to the promised land." He said. A couple seconds passed, and then the guards put up their weapons. Two of them went back to parade rest, while the guard slung the phaser in the crook of his arm. "Pass, Captain." He said without apology. And really, why would he apologize? He was doing exactly what he was supposed to do. "This officer with me, Lieutenant al-Sharif, is to be put on the daily rotation of pass-codes. She will need instant access to the Device." Falthgood said. "See to it that she gets clearance." The Captain came to attention, "As you wish, Captain." "Come, Lieutenant." He said without looking as he stepped beyond the guard ring and next to the giant device sitting in the cargo-bay. (reply: if desired) "I had considered what to tell you, and what not to tell you, but it occurs to you that you have as much riding on the next few days as we all do. Therefore, Captain Arianna, I'm going to completely level with you...something neither of us is apparently in the habit of doing." He said as he sat on one of the covered portions of whatever was sitting on the cargo-bay floor. It was huge, and still covered in the anti-radiation blanket it had been beamed over with. Falthgood hated being near it, so he hadn't uncovered it. "It occurs to me that I could easily be killed in the coming days. Until now, nobody has known any of my dirty little secrets. You're about to learn one, because there is nobody else on this ship I would entrust it too. If I fall, you will need to know what to do... and how to do it. And before you ask, no, you have no choice but to learn." He looked back up without a pause. "This is the Trinity Device, one of the many things I found while working with Doenitz. I had hidden it against the day that Doenitz decided to hunt me down, or start doing naughty things such as launching civil wars. If you want the truth, I was hoping I'd be able to leave it buried... but the universe doesn't usually accede to our wishes or demands." Zach sighed, almost melancholy. He pulled a PADD from one of his myriad pockets and handed it to her. "But before we go into how to work it, watch this. These are the secure logs from the Sycophant, they'll explain what it does better then I could ever describe... and you'll see why this will be our last weapon... one I pray we never have to use." (reply: Lise, any) (posted by Trout) (USS Boudicca - Main Engineering - ACEO Ensign Lorimar - 1525) "Absolutely, Ensign, excellent idea. However, we'll still shave the 18 seconds off. But the coordination of the first set of diagnostic procedures so that we know what is involved would be beneficial. My suggestion would be to start running those simulations that are found under the heavy combat section in the computer. While we may in fact be dealing with new life-forms who cause unknown damage to our systems for unknown reason, I feel that our time may be better spent dealing with the battle simulation systems. Do you agree?" Lorimar looked at the CEO and smiled in agreement. "Certainly Lieutenant. We can get your eighteen seconds, and a fair bit more ah'm certain. 'Heavy combat' may be a wee bit of an understatement, if things go the way the Admiral and Captain seem to expect they will." His smile quickly faded thinking of what was to come. "We also should get a skill set together for the various engineers, figure out who is best suited to run what, and who the back up section leaders will be. Would you like to assist me in that process?" "Of course ma'am," Lorimar replied quickly, 'Ah can start on that right away, with your permission? Ah'll begin with a check of the personnel files to see who has what specialized training and experience. Ah've seen a few things during our work-ups that ah wished to comment on..." His statement was interrupted by the arrival of Captain Falthgood, whom Bob had met earlier at the briefing. Bob had been unimpressed then, and was less impressed now. "Mister al-Sharif, you're with me" The captain stated. ~Ah see that guid manners go oot the window when ye make rank,~ thought Bob disgustedly. ~If that is the case ah'll be content to stay an ensign forever! Which... I suppose ah will at any rate, given the way I am...~ "Ensign Lorimar, it appears that my attention is required elsewhere" Bob turned and looked up at the Captain, somehow containing his urge to jump atop a console to look him in the eye. "I am leaving you in charge of everything here until I return, and then, we will continue with the assessment?" "Aye Aye Lieutenant. We will keep her together until ye get back. With courtesy and respect as we do it..." He shot another glance at Falthgood, but refrained from saying anything further. Bob smiled and bowed his head at Arania. "A pleasure meeting ye, Arania... enjoy your evening." Bob realized that Lt. Yalix was having a comm badge conversation with... Lt. Johnson, also from OPS. "Sir, I have need of your assistance on Deck 3, section 24. It is a matter of some importance, sir. Please do not tarry, Yalix out." "You're pants appear to be of nutritional value to this animal ensign. I suggest that once this animal has been returned to it's owner that you return to your quarters and replicate yourself a new pair. A hole in the knee of you uniform trousers is hardly regulation." Bob was barely able to contain a chuckle at that. "Aye sir! Anything for the ship Lieutenant. Better my pants than... something vital, and I will get a new pair when I return to quarters." He smiled at Yalix, then continued, "Thank you again for the help sir... ah suspected ye could find this wee goat's rightful place aboard." ~Well at least ah know that if the replicators go out an ah'm hungry... ah can survive by eating my own pants...!~ (Reply Any, IYW) (Posted by Russ) (USS Boudicca - Corridor-AOPS Lt. (USS Boudicca - Personal Quarters - ACMO Gates - 1845) "Good night, Georgia, it was a pleasure meeting you." Georgia felt herself sag slightly with relief. ~thank goodness he got the message so I didn't have to be too rude~ The Counselor turned and started to walk out but halted midway. "Oggie Boggie," he said solemnly without turning. "That *would* offend me. I hate that name. It's so .... demeaning." As he continued to walk out, Georgia felt momentarily guilty for turning down his invitation. He almost sounded like he needed the company more than she did. ~but not tonight, definitely not after the day I've had, who knows where the food would end up~ She pondered his last words, wondering who had given him the name "Oggie Boggie", because it had certainly made some sort of impact on him, whether he realised it or not. ~just don't let him into your head too much~ (reply none) (posted by Wendy) (USS Boudicca - Sickbay - ACMO Gates - 1935) "I beg your pardon for startling you, doctor. I am Staff Nurse Mason." ~wondering what sort of butterfingers you have for a boss, I'll bet~ They both began to bend to pick up the Padd, when a newcomer appeared in the doorway. "Hello, who are you?" Georgia straightened hurriedly, and smiled at the Doctor. "I'm Georgia Gates, the umm new ACMO." She stood uncertainly , not sure whether to offer a hand for a hand shake, or whether to leave it. "I am pleased to meet you, I am Doctor Jahlen." Georgia nodded her head slightly in acknowledgement, and then struggled to find something more to say. Nurse Mason took the opportunity to pick up the dropped PADD and handed it back to her. "I apologise for dropping the PADD, Doctor," Mason said smoothly, holding Georgia’s eyes with her own. "I'm not usually so clumsy." ~what? I don't understand, it was me who dropped it, ~ She gazed at the nurse, feeling slightly confused and wondering what was going on. "If you'll excuse me I'll leave you and Dr Jahlen to get to know one another," Mason added. "I'll be checking the rosters for the next few days if you need me." Georgia smiled her thanks, not just for the dropped Padd, but for the obvious time she had already put in to organising Sickbay. She could tell Mason was going to be a real asset to her. The J'Naii Doctor on the other hand, Georgia was unsure of. She hated meeting new people at the best of times, but to be meeting someone who's job you've just taken over was even worse. Pasting what she hoped was a friendly smile on her face, she gestured for the doctor to take a seat. "So, um Doctor Jahlen, from the looks of things you've been running Sickbay. Please feel free to give me any ideas you have on how to run things more efficiently. And if there are any areas that we perhaps need to work on." (reply Jahlen? iyw) (posted by Wendy) (USS Boudicca, Sickbay - MO Dr. Jahlen - 1936) The new face introduced herself as Georgia Gates, the new ACMO. "I am pleased to meet you, I am Doctor Jahlen." Dr. Gates nodded her head slightly in acknowledgment, and Nurse Mason picked up the dropped PADD and handed it back to Dr. Gates, apologizing for dropping it. Jahlen had never know Beatrix Mason to be clumsy *ever*, but if Mason said she'd dropped it then she'd dropped it, regardless of what Jahlen thought and that the puzzled look in Georgia Gate's eyes added merit to Jahlen's suspicions. It was no big deal. "If you'll excuse me I'll leave you and Dr Jahlen to get to know one another," Mason added. "I'll be checking the rosters for the next few days if you need me." "I guess that means I'll be back on Gamma again Nurse, so if you wouldn't mind making the changes?." (reply Mason) Georgia smiled and gestured for Jahlen to take a seat. With a nod of thanks Jahlen did so. Folding her hands together on her lap she crossed her legs and watched Dr. Gate's face as she spoke, her own face impassive and non-committal. Time would tell whether or not she would like Gates, but for now she was had no feelings either way, besides... working Gamma shift she was hardly likely to get to know the new ACMO very well anyway. She wondered if there'd be a new CMO any time soon. Didn't matter much, either way she was lowest on the rung. "So, um Doctor Jahlen, from the looks of things you've been running Sickbay. Please feel free to give me any ideas you have on how to run things more efficiently. And if there are any areas that we perhaps need to work on." "Yes, I have been in charge since Dr. Caskie was transferred, but I knew it was just an interim position. I also know that some times it is hard for a newcomer, such as yourself, Doctor, When they find themselves in a superior position to others who have been here longer." Jahlen smiled genuinely. "However Doctor, I am sure that none of us bear any resentment towards you... As for any ideas, my motto is: 'A neat ship is an efficient ship', so I have ensured the medical personnel pick up after themselves as they work and put things back where they came from... I have also discouraged any gossiping among them, it is counter productive to efficient use of their time...There is always something to do around here, even if it is further studying." Jahlen paused and picked a piece of lint off her pant leg before continuing. "But I do encourage them to talk to me should they feel the need, with the promise that I will remain non-judgmental, my office door is always open to them and sometimes it's something trivial they don't wish to discuss with a counselor... Also, we've been having at least one drill per shift, random scenarios covering all possibilities during battle. We have all improved in our response times." She wanted to make sure things were working as they should, and also prove she was prepared to work hard. ~guilt does funny things~ She finished with the Padd in front of her, yawned slightly, and had a stretch. She was doing her best not to think of what lay a few days ahead, and rather concentrate on the here and now. She was tidying up the last few things on her desk when she heard someone speaking to one of the nurses. "Excuse me. Might I see Doctor Gates?" She made her way out of her office. "I'm Dr Gates, how might I help?" (reply Donald?) "Take a seat and we'll give you a quick look over. When was the last time you had a physical?" (reply Donald?) Apart from the cough he was complaining of, the Ops officer appeared to be in reasonably good health. A thought entered her head. ~now he wouldn't be pretending to get sick to avoid the battle, surely~ She looked at him steadily. "From what I can see, everything appears to be within normal parameters. You say it only started today? I think for the moment we'll just give it the old fashioned treatment of strong lemon and honey drinks, and keeping warm. When was the last time you had a physical?" she said indicating a chair for him to sit in. Donald sat and replied, "I don't recall. A few months easily. Definitely before I transferred onto the Boudicca." He tried to be reasonably still as he was examined, it was the one thing he didn't really like about being sick. He felt like a piece of meat on display getting ready for the grill. Finally she said, "From what I can see, everything appears to be within normal parameters. You say it only started today? Thank you for seeing me. I just wanted to tell you that the Boudicca is now battle-ready. Last upgrades have been completed and the crew is as ready as ever. Did you see the last alertness exercise? Two forty-eight. It may not be a record but to shave off one and a half minute in just a few days. They deserve a commendation for that. Do I have your permission?" Sevant put his PADD aside and nodded once, sharply. "See to it." The coldly logical part of his mind took those numbers and decided they would have to be even better if they were going to survive. The emotional side, the part his wife had awoken, almost mourned that he was thinking of his crew as machines. Such was war. The Admiral quirked his head as the acting Captain paused. He'd been around the man just enough to know that whatever was about to follow was going to be unpleasant... more so for Stakes then Sevant. "Sir, there IS one more thing, sir. I think it is about time for you to get the h**l off my ship, Sir. We are going to be in the frontline of the attack as will be all of your other senior staff. The risk of losing all of our senior commanders in the frontline is too big. In this case, it is time to eat your stupid pride and move to a ship to the back of the line, where you can direct the battle from relative safety. I appreciate that there will be little place of safety anywhere but having a force commander direct the battle from the midst of the battle is not just dangerous, it is also bl**dy stupid. Sir." Sevant's eyes narrowed. He'd been called many things in his life, prideful and stupid were -not- part of the usual norm. "Since you have already taken the liberty of speaking freely, I will respond in kind." Sevant said as he leaned forward in his chair, "There is no-where else I could possibly be. You are truly an excellent technical Captain, you know the rulebook front and back. But you, Mr. Stakes, don't appreciate the finer aspects of psychology." The Admiral stood and pointed to a map, the battle-plan that had been shaped up. "Nothing in this war has been about the rules. If we all followed the rules, none of the 52nd fleet would have defected. We're leading a battle against the very heart of the Federation; we're going to devastate the spiritual and political core of everything we've sworn to protect. Sure, we have a good reason. But that reason may not be enough when people see their home soil contaminated with radiation, their families destroyed by errant torpedoes. I will be heading that force, less for my safety and more to give our forces some strength-of-heart." He crossed his arms behind him, "And further, there is no guarantee that once the Line is breached that it will stay open. I NEED to be on Valhalla, Mr Stakes. Once our fifty are through, there's no promise that the rest of the 19th will be able to keep the gap open long enough for me to slip through. " He stopped, "There is no place of safety. "Okay, that's everything, come on before they shut this section off." said Ray, as he stalked out pushing a less full dolly. Lorak nodded "Commencing communication's lockdown sir, override command codes locked in, security is standing by" He looked at Archibald for a second and then back to his station. "I know, but fights happen and the weak need to be defended." countered Carl. "Hmph" acknowledged Ray grudgingly. "This whole debacle shouldn't have happened in the first place. They should have put scientists in charge of Star Fleet instead of that idiot Doenitz." Carl sighed, as he followed his smaller twin down the corridor. Other scientists were lugging what they could carry out, clearly as unhappy as Ray, just not quite so verbal about it. "Can you imagine how many resources we'll have to devote to non-scientific projects just to fix all the damage he's caused?" said Ray exasperated. Carl was surprised Ray was even aware of it, being locked up in his lab most of the time. "I hadn't thought about it, Ray" he admitted. "I suppose you wouldn't," said Ray dismissively. "It will be years before ships can go back out on exploratory missions. It'll all be spent on putting all the pieces together. Curse that fool!" He had spent most of the day so far helping his brother Ray move stuff out of his lab which was being shutdown to conserve power. Ray hadn't been in a very good mood and Carl couldn't blame him. His brother's work was very important, but the Boudicca being a battleship had other concerns at times than the pursuit of science. Carl was unusually tall for most of the medical staff. At six foot six inches, his physique would lead most people to assume he was a security officer if it weren't for the blue hue of his uniform. And they wouldn't have been so far off, he had been a security officer at one time. But now he served the medical department. He nodded and acknowledged some of his co-workers as he moved toward the back of the assemblage of nurses and doctors, as he didn't want to block the view of anyone.
