Ro'Dal - 1804) Chewing always seemed to help Ro'Dal think better for some reason, or maybe it was because her stomach was no longer complaining that allowed her mind to concentrate better, consequently as Nodel and she were eating their meal, the Takaran decided that they could do nothing until they actually knew who 'The Voice' was and whether the person was up to no good. So she told Nodel that he could easily travel through the air supply tubes of the ship, and could make his way to the guest quarters where he could listen to them talking. "....You'd have to be very quiet of course… But once you know which person the voice matches, you can point him out to me when I show you their pictures on computer terminal." She suggested, absentmindedly waving her fork gently in the air at him as she spoke. Thankfully Nodel didn't appear to be frightened by the prospect of subterfuge, Ro' got the feeling that he was quite excited about it. Nodel bobbed in the manner that Ro' had come to know, meant affirmative. "Nodel will do this," he replied, "But how will Nodel know where to go? Nodel also promise Nodel will be quiet." he replied. "Good, thank you. It will be simple enough to guide you where you need to go." Ro' stated confidently. "We will go to the deck above the guests' quarters and from there it's an easy route to them through the tubes, if you can count your fingers, then I can tell you how many junctions you must pass before changing directions and how many more to pass before you arrive at your destination." Ro' tilted her head and regarded her small, furry friend. "Can you count your fingers, and do you know left from right?" (reply Nodel) Nodding enthusiastically, the Takaran told Nodel that he'd done a great job of counting. "Then finish your meal and we'll get going. At this time of day they will also likely be gathered together to share a meal." Ro' tucked in to the remainder of her meal and a few minutes later they were ready to start on their investigations. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Deck 4 - Personal Quarters - Nodel - 1809) "Can you count your fingers, and do you know left from right?" Nodel bobbed, "yes Nodel can count, see?" He then proceeded to count off all three of his fingers and then both of his opposable thumbs, for a total of eight. "And this is port side left, and Starboard side right." he said holding up the correct hand for each definition. "Then finish your meal and we'll get going. At this time of day they will also likely be gathered together to share a meal." (USS Rosenante - Deck above guest quarters - Jeffries Tube - Nodel - 1828) Nodel had followed Ro' out through the corridors and into the smaller tunnels that she called Jefferies Tubes. Nodel wondered who Jefferies was and if he would be mad if he discovered that they were there. After a while, he forgot that he had wanted to ask Ro'Dal about Jefferies being angry, this instance just happened to correspond with the discovery and removal of a sir system grating. "When you reach the bottom of this tube turn right and travel past five junctions, at the sixth one you turn left and go past eight more junctions. On your right you should find another grill like this one which will be for first of the guest quarters. If nobody is there keep going to the next grill and then the next until you can hear someone. There are several along that tube that lead to the guest quarters." "Nodel understand," The Amthopoid stated. "right, pass five, left on six, pass eight, then look to right for grill." (reply Ro'Dal iyw) Nodel bobbed for a moment, then leapt almost with a suddenness of a spring snapping and discharging it's compressed energy through the opening in the air duct and out of sight." --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Deck above guest quarters - Jeffries Tube - Sec.O Lt. Ro'Dal - 1826) Before leaving her quarters, Ro' had refreshed her memory of the air supply tubes configuration on the deck where the guests were located, and also where to access them in the maintenance tubes on the deck above. Now Nodel and she were seated in the Jeffries tube with the loosened grille of the air tube between them, while Ro' told him which direction to take and how many junctions he had to pass before changing direction. "When you reach the bottom of this tube turn right and travel past five junctions, at the sixth one you turn left and go past eight more junctions. On your right you should find another grille like this one which will be for first of the guest quarters. If nobody is there keep going to the next grille and then the next until you can hear someone. There are several along that tube that lead to the guest quarters." (reply Nodel) Giving the small being a hug of encouragement, Ro' lifted the loosened grille away from the vent and wished Nodel 'good luck'. Even quietly mumbling as he went so that he wouldn't lose count. At the first grille to the right, he stopped and quietly moved forward so that he could peer through the grating at the room beyond. There was a voice there, and it seemed to belong to a male that was standing in the middle of the room. He was muttering something that sounded almost like a whispered prayer, as he stood upright on only one foot. The second leg was bent at the knee in such a way that it allowed the foot to rest on the inside of the knee of the right foot. His hands were clasped together. The lights were dim. Nodel wondered what the male was doing, but he didn't linger since he realized rather quickly that this older man was not the voice of the slaver he had heard hidden behind the strange flora in the Trade Winds. Nodel turned and silently padded further along the air duct again. At the next grate, a man was sitting and working on a computer. He was very quiet, and while Nodel sat and watched him with a little interest, it quickly became apparent that the man was not going to speak any time soon. That determined, Nodel crept onward with the thought that perhaps if he returned later the man might say something. The third grate was another boring view. The man there was just sitting looking out of a window looking at some sort of handheld padd. He like the last man was not talking. Nodel again decided to move on and come back later. Long before he reached the fourth grill, he could hear voices. He edged closer listening. "…I mean seriously Bettan what were you thinking? You infiltrated the Rosenante's computer system and now there has been an attack by their own holographic soldier…" "Marine admiral." "Marine, whatever. How do you think that is going to look to the Federation captain?" "My job is as an intelligence asset Admiral, that's why you brought me along. That means, making sure that the Federation officers are not in league with the Orion Syndicates.-" "They're our allies, Bettan. They're not Arturians!" the older man howled." "They may not be Arturians, but I have no way of knowing if they are a danger unless I spy on them to be certain." "But look now what's happened!" came the response. "Did you..? Are you..?" "No Admiral I am not responsible for the attacks." the other man answered. Nodel found this very interesting. It seemed that these two men were spying, just like he was. "And what do we tell them if they discover your illegal entry?" The admiral asked. "Have you thought of that?" The younger man, presumably Bettan frowned and turned his back to the Admiral. He walked a few paces away and looked out the windows for a few moments. He then spoke, "We tell them nothing. If they do their job well, they'll see that someone was only spying on the Arturians, and the Captain of the ship. They won't be able to link it back to us. It's just not possible. They may think it was a member of our delegation, but they'll only have a strong suspicion. They'll have no proof." "For all our sakes I hope you're right." "I guarantee I'm right, Admiral. I wanted to be certain that the ship was honestly looking for the Prince. I couldn't just take their word for it. " The older man nodded. Then stepped over to a chair and dropped down in it as if he were exhausted. "There is something else Admiral." The man's tone was serious. "What more could there be?" the older man asked in a fatigued voice. "Raschen, their Security Chief, he has something of a history with the Orions. I stole some files from the Arbiter's Aide Rhone while she was in sickbay, checking on T'val. She's really quite the amateur. He used to work for the previous president of the Federation, Doenitz, and also for the Orions. He's not a very nice man. I think he could very well be hindering our efforts in recovering the Prince. There's a good chance that he has sufficient access to the ship's computer to do so." "Do you have any proof that he's been working against us?" the admiral asked. "No, but I can get it, if you give me enough time." "I don't know." "It's risky, but we knew the risk when we chose to serve our people. If Raschen is working for the Orions, we have to find out for whom and we have to make certain that it stops." Bettan stated. "We could go to the captain with the information." "And what, ask him to relieve his own security chief because we suspect he has affiliations with the Orions?" he asked rhetorically, " Do you really think that the captain of this ship is unaware of the history of his security chief?" "I…..-" the admiral began. "Exactly my point." Bettan continued, " We need irrefutable proof before we go to the captain, otherwise he won't take this information seriously. It will be dismissed as a fact that he already knows. It won't get the due diligence that it deserves." "I suppose you're right." Bettan nodded, then finally turned back around to face the Admiral. "The Arturians should never have been allowed in on this recovery mission, they pose too great a risk to the Prince." "But T'val seemed to think otherwise." "And look at what trust got T'val. He's three-quarters dead, attacked by a holographic assailant that was most assuredly hijacked and programmed by the Arturians." "Why would Molors attack T'val? It doesn't make sense." "It's doesn't have to make sense, it just has to happen. The Arturians will lose a lot if this peace process is finalized. We have a stronger economy and a bigger military. For them this isn't a joint-rule peace, it's surrender. I've listened to them talking, that's what they believe. They've even said that they think T'val is in league with us. If that's true do you think it would be a far stretch for them to think that T'val's negotiations may be somewhat one-sided, favoring us?" The admiral remained silent for a moment. "Perhaps you have a point." he finally said, "I need to think about this new development." Bettan nodded, "Of course." The younger man, then turned and exited the room. (reply none) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Deck above guest quarters - Air Ducting- Nodel - 1845) Nodel left the vent where the two men had been talking behind him when the younger man had left. He had encountered that younger man again in the room adjacent, but just as importantly, he had also encountered some sort of case just inside the air duct outside the room, not belonging to the man in question, but to the next room over. He edged forward, forgetting about the younger angry sounding man, since Nodel realized that this was not the same man whose voice he had heard earlier at the Tradewinds. No instead, he went to investigate the case. It was funny looking, almost a cube, except it was taller then it was wide or long. It was colored a deep blue that almost bordered on black, and it had three small green disks set near what Nodel thought might be the latching mechanism. He somehow instinctively knew this was a biometric scanner, perhaps for finger prints or DNA. The surface of the device had been thoroughly cleaned, Nodel's sensitive nose could smell the chemicals used to clean it. His attention was drawn back to the grate when there was a sound from the room. It reminded him of a door chime. Nodel turned to look through, just as a voice, THE VOICE, said, "Enter." Immediately Nodel realized that was the same voice that he had heard both on Barakos IV and at the Tradewinds. Nodel edged over to look into the room through the grate as the Door opened and a man walked in. It was an Arturian, Nodel knew this because he had seen and met all the Meldovians on board the ship. "Sorry to bother you Joldo. The general needs to see you." the new arrival said. "I'll be there in a moment." he replied and then rose from his chair to head towards the door. Nodel caught a glimpse of the man's face, whish wasn't as important since he knew the man's name. He turned and headed up the air duct. He made it as far as the next room, before he stopped and went back for the box. ~Ro' might want this~ Nodel thought. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Deck above guest quarters - Jeffries Tube - Nodel - 1915) Nodel slid out of the air ducting bottom first. He stretched out his legs until he touched the floor then turned to see Ro' watching him. "Nodel knows." he said weaving from side to side in excitement., "And Nodel brings Ro' a present that Nodel finds in the Air Duct." The small creature stood on his tip-toes and reached into the air duct opening and pulled the strange looking box out of the duct. It had no hand holds, so0 he had to carry it with both hands. "See what Nodel Finds?" he asked Ro. (reply Ro'Dal) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Deck above guest quarters - Jeffries Tube - Sec.O Lt. Ro'Dal - 1916) It felt like Ro' had been waiting over an hour for Nodel's return although when she checked her chronometer for the third time she saw it had been about 45 minutes. She sensed more than heard the movement at the air duct entrance and smiled with relief as Nodel slid out of the air ducting bottom first. He stretched out his legs until he touched the floor then turned to see Ro' watching him. "Nodel knows." he said weaving from side to side in what she took for excitement, "And Nodel brings Ro' a present that Nodel finds in the Air Duct." ~ A present? What does he mean? ~ She wondered as he stood on his tip-toes and reached into the air duct opening. Nodel pulled out a strange looking box and holding it with both hands, held it out to his Takaran friend. "See what Nodel Finds?" he asked Ro. "Where did you find that?" Ro' asked as she reached for the box and took it gently from his grasp, it looked like a biometric scanner but surely her little friend hadn't actually gone into on of the guests' rooms. (reply Nodel) "Obviously they were hiding it." Ro' stated and looked at her furry friend. "Well done, Nodel, I knew if anyone could do this it would be you. Now tell me what you know?" When Nodel told her the name of 'The Voice' was Joldo and then everything he had overheard, Ro' nodded solemnly. "We have to tell my superiors about this, my little friend, but I am adverse to telling Ensign Raschen even though he is my department head, given what you have just told me, I must consider that the Meldovians could possibly be right in suspecting him.... I must go to see the Captain about this." She gave a nod, she had made her mind up. "Let's go then, there is no time to waste." The two of them made their way through the jeffries tubes until they reached Deck 1, where Ro' opened an access hatch and crawled out into the corridor that led to the Bridge. Once they were out and the hatch closed behind them, they made their way to the Bridge. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Deck above guest quarters - Jeffries Tube - Nodel - 1917) Nodel slid out of the air ducting bottom first. Nodel knows that Jodel is the voice Nodel hears through the bushes and on Barakos. Joldo is the Slaver that Nodel tells Ro about. Why is it in the air duct?" "Obviously they were hiding it." Ro' stated and looked at her furry friend. "Well done, Nodel, I knew if anyone could do this it would be you. Now tell me what you know?" Nodel launched into a detailed description of the conversation between the man named admiral and the man named Bettan. He also described the other rooms that he saw including the man balancing on one foot. When he is finished, Nodel's shoulders sagged and he lowered himself to the floor as if expending all his energy in the retelling. "We have to tell my superiors about this, my little friend, but I am adverse to telling Ensign Raschen even though he is my department head, given what you have just told me, I must consider that the Meldovians could possibly be right in suspecting him.... I must go to see the Captain about this." She gave a nod, then declared, "Let's go then, there is no time to waste." Nodel sprung to life, bounding from the floor to a conduit hanging from the ceiling. He clamped both feet and hands around the round piping and nodded his head and shoulders. "Nodel agrees." he stated and followed Ro towards the bridge. (reply Nodel, Salid, any) (posted by Sal) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge- CO- Capt. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1930) Ahmed passed off the padd with the latest reports and then closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose between his left thumb and forefinger. The day had been exceptionally stressful and there had been casualties. He released his grip, and opened his eyes and decided to look around the bridge. He turned his head and immediately noticed Lieutenant Ro'Dal. "Do you need something Lieutenant?" he asked her. (reply Ro'Dal) Ahmed nodded and came to his feet. He made a quick glance around the bridge and his eyes settled on Lieutenant Dralar. "Mister Dralar, you have the CONN." he ordered "Aye sir," the Skorr officer replied then left his station to move towards the center chair. A bridge specialist took his place at the Helm. "Follow me Lieutenant" Ahmed said to Ro'Dal, noting that she had her new ward Nodel along with her. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge- Sec.O Lt. Ro'Dal - 1931) "Do you need something Lieutenant?" Captain Salid asked when he noticed her waiting patiently for his attention. "Indeed I do, Sir." Ro' stated with a nod, her face serious, her eyes worried. "Something urgent has come to my attention that I feel could possibly prove detrimental to the safety of this crew and ship. It is imperative that I speak with you in a more private setting, Captain." Salid nodded and rose to his feet, glancing around for someone to leave in charge of the bridge. "Mister Dralar, you have the CONN." he ordered The Skorr officer acknowledged the order and left his station to move towards the center chair. Another took over the helm, and the Captain told Ro' to follow him as he led the way to his Ready Room. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Ready Room- CO- Capt. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1932) As they three entered the ready room Ahmed spoke aloud to the computer, "Computer restore default Ready Room door settings." [settings restored] "Can I get you something from the replicator, Lieutenant, ermmm Nodel?" (reply Ro'Dal) "Nodel likes fruit juice." Ro's small companion said. "Okay." Ahmed replied and then filled the requests of his guests as well fulfilling his own desire from the replicator. He placed the items on the desk between them then took his chair. "Okay Mister Ro'Dal, what can I do for you?" he asked, then sipped his pomegranate juice. (reply Ro'Dal) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Ready Room- Sec.O Lt. "Water, room temperature will suffice thank you, Captain." Ro' responded, feeling it would be impolite to refuse her superior officer's consideration and she was aware that she was thirsty. "Nodel likes fruit juice." Nodel replied. "Okay." Ahmed replied and then filled the requests of his guests as well fulfilling his own desire from the replicator and placed the items on the desk between them before he sat down. "Okay Mister Ro'Dal, what can I do for you?" he asked, sipping his drink. Almost with ceremonial care, Ro' gently placed the box that Nodel had given her on the desk in front of the Captain and then relayed their story. She told him about 'The Voice' that Nodel had recognized as a slaver's voice in Tradewinds and about their plans to discover to whom the voice belonged, the finding of the box and where it was found and the ultimate outcome of their investigations. "I am aware that I probably should have taken our findings to Ensign Raschen, Sir, but after hearing what was said about him, I felt I should bring this to you." The plan was very ambitious and from his point of view, a miracle if they could pull it off, especially under the constraint that they had to do it while keeping the phaser arrays online. He wanted to make certain that the captain knew he was also on the job. "That's a tall request. Even with the phaser array and backup systems we had access to while we were docked at Geneva I'm not sure we could do it." chimed in Matrix. =^=Sir, any ideas?=^= Sheridan asked obviously the question was directed to either T'Kron, Smith or the Captain, He was uncertain which. Matrix could see the ensign's brain working through the problem and noted him shaking his head. ~I agree Ensign...I agree.~ =^=Sir we could power down one phaser array at a time as we modify them. It would take longer but we would of course lose the phaser fire field when it is down.=^= Said Smith. Matrix responded, "I don't think we have any choice but to power down those systems. The energy transfers required...unless......I have an idea. Give me about 30 minutes to run some tests. Matrix out." Smith and Sheridan can assist in handling the potential problems with the power network and T'Kron can oversee the coil modifications and the overall project coordination." "Now, here's the hard part. You'll have to be able to make your modifications without taking the current phasers off-line for any significant length of time. And we won't be able to test them while we are here in Orion space, unless we are forced to use them." "Mister T'Kron will be in charge of the modifications as it falls under his jurisdiction as ACEO. You can of course confer as needed with Lieutenant matrix, but I'd prefer for him to handle the general operations in Main Engineering while you three work on this project." "Do any of you have any questions?" Robert shook his head as his mind began to run through what they had been assigned to do. ~Can’t take the system off line of time so a total modifications in one go is out of the question. It would be the quickest way but then we would have not weapons~ Robert looked at the others. He had an idea and decided to get the ideas rolling as this might be a bit tricky. “Sir we could power down one phaser array at a time as we modify them. The fact that they could not take the phasors offline for extended period made sense but at the same time complicated matters. Sheridan didn't;t really have anything to add but looked over at the acting Chief of OPS. Phil glanced at Ensign Smith and saw the same look he was wearing - what to do to minimize exposure. As the session broke up Phil gestured at Ensign Smith and walked over to where he was standing. "Sir, any ideass?" Sheridan asked. (Reply: Ensign Smith) The SCPO listened as the Ensign spoke. About all they could do was to made the modifications and changes a small group at a time - thereby limiting the loss of firepower. You'll be responsible to keep tactical advised at all times on which phaser arrays are down at any given time. Coordinate your efforts through T'Kron. In the meantime, I'll be on the bridge," said Captain Salid. After the Captain left, T'Kron turned to the other two. "We have the aft phaser array, the starboard array, the port phaser array, and the forward phaser array. Those are easier for us to access. The ventral phaser array which is located underneath the ship, and the dorsal phaser array which is located on the spine of the ship, are a harder to access easily but not impossible. To work out the process of what we will need to do, I would suggest we begin with the forward phaser array." (Reply Phil Sheridan, Robert Smith) (Posted by Sheila) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Phaser Control – Sr OPS NCOIC -SCPO Phil Sheridan - 0935) As the engineer T'Kron spoke, Phill nodded and picked up his toolkit. "Lead on Ensign" Phil replied to the suggestion that they start with the forward array. Sheridan waited head to the designated area. Sheridan wasn't a great engineering tech but he could do OK and the Vulcan engineering ensign seemed to know what was going on. "Ensign, how would you like me to start?" Phil asked. (reply: T'Kron IYW) "Aye Sir" Phil replied and turned to the task at hand. (reply: any/none) (posted by: Bill West) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Deck 7 Lower Engineering, Weapons Control Systems Center- Weapons Systems Analyst/EO Lt(jg) Stacey Martinovich - 0950) "No," Stacey said in her thick Australian accent. She gestured to the monitor with one finger, almost as if she was going to stab it. "We can't work the bank that way, it'll cause a feedback through circuit 10-D and short out the entire HISS web for the ventral section." She touched a couple of buttons and brought the area into tight focus, "On the other hand, if we crosswire junctions 10 and 11, we might just be able to pull off a few shots without dropping our pants." Her assistant Weapons Analyst shook his head. "That would cause a feedback through the EPS systems." "One that we could control, if we dampen down here and here." she said, gesturing to a couple of control conduits. "The boss won't like that," he pointed out. "It doesn’t matter. March orders are to bypass the HISS, none of these systems were designed for it..." she shook her head and pulled the image back out to a generic Master Systems Display for the weapons subsystems. She pulled her hair out of her eyes, "Run me a power distro report for these systems, we can decide which to re-route then." "Yes Lieutenant," he said before stepping off to a secondary console. The Analyst face-palmed for a moment as she ran numbers and scenarios through her head, looking for the best way to reroute her babies into a configuration that wouldn’t either blow up the ship, or destroy their stealth capabilities completely, while still allowing phaser control. She covered her mouth and wrapped her free hand around her stomach as she opened her eyes again and stared at the systems screen again. “Morgan, take a guess at how effective the HISS would be while firing, assuming the phasers had a separate power source?” Ensign Morgan, her Assistant, paused in his work for a moment as he considered that. “Assuming we weren’t pulling phasers from the same source as the HISS?” he mused for a moment. “We’d be lit up like the fourth of july while firing and for a few seconds after, before the web could render us a black hole again. It’s not a cloak, after all.” “So emissions control wouldn’t be as important, not while we were actively firing.” She mused herself. “It occurs to me that we could reduce the stress on the power distribution system if we could route generator power through the secondary systems- to feed the beast.” “We’d have to bypass all the emissions control systems to kick the fusion generators online,” he said as he turned with a PADD in hand. “And even so, we couldn’t run them long without completely swamping the HISS.” “Right, but if we’re desperate enough to need weapons while trying to hide… will it matter?” she asked to nobody in particular. She didn’t know what the Captain wanted, or why he wanted this at all, she’d just been told to start planning the changes to her precious phaser banks. “We can add it to the list, it’s a possibility. The HISS would still be 75% effective after five minutes, with or without the power and exhaust emissions from the fusion reactors.” She turned and took the PADD from the ensign, “I’m going to prepare a brief, start backing up the current computer configuration of the EPS and Phaser systems in case we have to undo the changes we make in a hurry.” “Right, Boss.” She nodded absently and began making her way through engineering. She had to have a small chat with her boss. If anyone on this ship could figure this out, Martinovich had as good a chance as any if not better. "Matrix to T'Kron, I've got an idea about your phaser issue if you'd like to hear it?" (Reply T'Kron) "We have a Weapons system specialist on board. She's already been alerted that you'll be needing to make some changes. I didn't give her many specifics, but I'm certain that she will be able to assist you. She's very good at what she does." said Matrix. (Reply T'Kron) " Go ahead and contact her, she's Lieutenant (jg) Martinovich" responded Matrix. She had never been as much as a minute late for a briefing or a meeting and yet here she was late for a mission of all things. Running almost full pelt into the transporter room she back pedaled furiously and apologised. "Sorry folks. Cat trouble." Knowing that it was the Second Officer who was leading the away team and knowing that she was partly Vulcan Josh expected an acerbic comment at the least about her lateness. "Completely understandable." was the comment Josh was met with and her mouth hung open for a second or two until her brain caught up with her. ~Ah, Norman. Well, you can thank your lucky starts this time Josh that she has a cat too. Let's try not to do it again though.~ The second officer then ran through what their mission was and what they could expect asking for questions or input and Josh immediately piped up. M’Epak turned to Sullivan not wanting to be left out at the chance to fight the enemy she said. “Sir the KDF deploys combat nurses with away teams and ground assault units. We perform emergency medicine to the patients at the scene and then assist in their transportation to sickbay or medical facility. ” The Klingon informed her, confirming her assumption. Her briefing continued until the matter was brought up about the environmental shield and the transport inhibitor. "Well, it really depends on whether you want it done by finesse or brute force. We can have the emitter destroyed, by any number of means, or we can sneak in and, with enough time, disable to system without damaging it." Dorian stated. "At this time I'd prefer not to damage anything as our actions at this point could be considered interstellar espionage or at worst an act of war, all which in the Orion Syndicate are punishable by death or slavery." Sullivan said matter-of-factly. "Personally, I wouldn't mind damaging it. It would make sure that if things get hairy, we have all the time in the world to beam out. And besides, those Orions have forfeit their rights by engaging in illegal activities as such. If some get injured, so be it." Weaver said. "Ensign Weaver, the logic of your reasoning for wanting to destroy the shield and inhibitor is slightly flawed. While the kidnapping of an individual and slavery are against the laws and statutes of the Federation, and most space faring races, keep in mind that slavery is not illegal in Orion Space, and is in fact a flourishing practice. Many races including humans have overcome this. While your reasoning to have a readily and nearly instant escape route for all away team members is correct and even excellent logically, we cannon force our cultural moors and values on another society. The only reason that this mission is not in the purview of the diplomats is the possible loss of life that will occur if the prince's rescue is not effected in our allotted time period. We cannot wait for the months or even years it would take to affect the release of the prince and his retinue by diplomatic means. That does not change the fact that you are in Star Fleet and are held to higher moral standards then any Orion citizen, is that understood?" T'Larah asked, she wanted to make absolutely certain that it was understood what could be a result of even the smallest piece of this mission should go awry. (Reply Weaver) After finishing his response, "What do you think of the terrain surrounding the shield and compound?" T'Larah asked no one in particular, Weaver responded. "The vegetation is going to make our going slow, but will shield our approach. These scans aren't extensive enough to show if some kind of predator is going to harry us on the way to the compound, but I'm guessing that "the locals" must have discouraged any big animals from staying near the structure." the scientist said. "Correct, the foliage will provide an excellent source of concealment, but it will not provide cover. The speed of approach is not as concerning as you may believe. Once we get near the compound violence of action will speed the mission. The standard sensor sweep did include other non-intelligent forms of life. To include mammalian and any life form larger then that of a small dog. That would not preclude walking trees, or anything more exotic, but I encourage all members to keep their wits about them and realize that there could be unforeseen threats." T'Larah said. "Aside from that, I don't know how much I can help with this away mission. Not that I'm asking to be left out, by any means." he lifted his tricorder. "This is going to limit the information I can give you, however." "You will be of plenty assistance, I may need you to bypass any computer security in the compound. If we do a communications probe of the villa to ascertain any security protocols, and there are no ships in orbit to piggyback our signal on. If we attempted to clandestinely ascertain that, the is a possibility that we will be discovered in orbit then they could send a communication out. Secondly I will need you to disable the communications array." (Reply Weaver) "The only stipulation I will put on your methods are that loss of life is to be kept to a minimum." (Reply Weaver, any) (Posted by Todd) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Transporter Room 1 - SO- Mike Rosenbauer - 1040) Once all the questions were completed, Sullivan finished the briefing and the teams took their position on the transporter pads. Mike and his small security team would beam down first, establish a perimeter and then signal when the remainder of the away team would beam down. The senior security officer nodded to the transporter chief to let her know that they were ready to go. A few moments later the transporter charged up and the security team was being transmitted through space towards their destination. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Haldor II- Jungle- SO- Mike Rosenbauer - 1041) The security team materialized in a circle, each facing away from the center. The jungle canopy was thick enough that it forced the majority of the floor into a deep duck-like shadow. Everything had a strange blue-grey tinge to it and for a moment Mike wondered if that was an affect of the canopy before he remembered that Haldor II's star was a blue giant. Turning slightly so that the man on his left could see, him, he gave a series of hand signals that conveyed his orders to advance in a circle but to remain in visual contact. He in turn passed the signal around the circle in a clockwise motion, each man conveying it to the man on his left. When it reached Mike, he said simply and quietly, "Move out." All of the security men moved forward at the same time. They couldn't advance too far. The trees were too think to allow for good line of sight so, roughly 10-meters from their original positions they came to a halt, not because of any order than Mike had given, but because each man stopped and took a step back when they could no longer see then men on either side of them. The security team was well trained and they dropped into a crouched position. Mike again gave a series of hand signals to the man on his left asking if anyone saw anything. A few moments later the negative response was returned. Mike tapped his commbadge, "Alpha team to beta Team, all clear for transport." There was no reply. Instead, the sound of the second away team transporting into position sounded and they materialized in the same position that Mike's team had arrived on the planet. Sullivan moved to Mike's position and knelt beside him, Mike gave his report quietly. "The perimeter of the shield is 1.98 clicks due north of our position." he pointed. "I am detecting a few higher order lifeforms, but nothing that should be predatory to a group our size." (reply Sullivan) Mike turned to his people, "We're moving, maintain pairs at 2 meters distance. One of ours and one of the other team members. Pair off and let's get moving." His people moved to team up with each member of the team that was not a security officer. Mike stepped back to where everyone else was assembling and starting to spread out. He noticed Tyrone teaming up with Jennifer. "I'll team with Doctor Caskie, Tyrone." Mike said as he reached them, "You team with Lieutenant Sullivan." Tyrone looked at mike for a moment, then glanced back at the CMO. "Sure thing chief." He said and then with a slight chuckle and a shake of the head moved to catch up with Sullivan. "Have anything you need a hand carrying?' Mike asked Jennifer as the team started moving in pairs towards the atmospheric shield. She watched as the first team spread out. Caskie moved over to her and spoke quietly to her so that they could not be over heard. "You already know why you are here. Get the prince back to the Rose asap. There are only three people on this team who can countermand those orders. Commander Sullivan, SO Rosenbauer and myself. I will take care of any casualties we might have on our team, you concentrate on the prince. If I am incapacitated in any way your orders stand. The prince is the first priority, the rest of us are expendable as far as you are concerned. Understood?" M’Epak looked at Caskie for a moment before nodded. “As you say Doctor.” As she saw Caskie checking her kit as Rosenbauer came over. She stepped away from them as she went through what Caskie had just told her as she also quickly checked her kit one last time. She under stood the reason why Caskie had chosen her for this away mission and was honoured to be selected for such a task. She did feel slight bad because Caskie was her superior and if any thing might happen to her she would find it hard to pass. Even though Caskie had ordered her to give the prince her only priority she would take every situation as it comes. She looked at the Caskie and saw still talking to that she was having a discussion. ~they do talk me to then in the KDF, could be worse though~ She stood up and pulled the straps of her small medkit tight so that it would not fall of while they were moving. She doubled checked the quick release buckles and them ran her hand over the hilt of her Mak'leth. when she was sure that every thing was where it was supposed to be she back towards Caskie and Rosenbauer. Spinning on her heels Josh turned 360 degrees, caught the rest of the security team and, guess what, even more trees. Commander Sullivan immediately crossed to Rosenbauer's position and Josh, catching M'Empak's eyes nodded to her once. She was glad that M'Epak had spoken up in the transporter room regarding her roll in this mission. It meant that she was becoming used to Starfleet way of doing things and was beginning to fit in. Josh remembered a time just after the Klingon had transferred when some of her staff simply assumed that a combat nurse was there to protect them. Little did they know at the time that this was far from the role that combat nurses were deployed as in the Klingon Fleet. Their specific job was to make sure that any patient they had the care of would be protected to the best of their abilities and would be the first, and if need be, the only one beamed back to the ship. Josh had brought M'Epak along knowing this. If the Prince was here then it was everyone's job to rescue him, but it was M'Epak's job to make sure he got back to the ship regardless of whatever else happened. Josh moved closer and tipped her head towards M'Epak so that she could not be overheard. "You already know why you are here. Get the prince back to the Rose asap. (Reply M'Epak) Josh was checking over her kit one last time when one of the security team came over to her for the buddy system and Josh nodded at him, but two seconds later Josh heard a familiar voice order him away. Josh was just adjusting the straps on the medpack she was carrying when she caught the look that the security officer gave them both and frowning looked over at the SO. "Mike I need you to tell whoever is paired with M'Epak that her orders are to get the prince back to the ship no matter what. Unless Commander Sullivan, you or I revoke those orders that is what she will do." Watching him as he passed those orders on Josh nodded and sighing deeply turned to him. "I am sorry to say this SO, but I am unhappy at your choice of teams. The security officer who was willing to team up with me was more than adequate and I am at a loss to understand the changes you made Josh seriously wanted to cringe knowing what she had just said would not got down well. but she continued. Mike nodded, although noting that Caskie clearly chose to ignore his question concerning any aid she may require with her gear. He turned and spoke with Novak informing her of the Klingon's mission. Novak nodded and rejoined his buddy. "I am sorry to say this SO, but I am unhappy at your choice of teams. The security officer who was willing to team up with me was more than adequate and I am at a loss to understand the changes you made." Mike raised an eyebrow. And regarded her as she continued. "You are the leader of this security team. Your position is not guarding me but leading this team and I suggest you go do so and assign someone else to take care of me." "Doctor Caskie, I do not pretend to advise you on medical techniques and I would ask that you adhere to the same courtesy. I chose you as a teammate because of your relative location in the group. You have conveniently placed yourself at the halfway point of our little troop. Lieutenant Sullivan is the senior officer, that makes her at the lead and places me at the vanguard. I prefer to march at the midway point so that I can move either forward or backwards as needed. Officers that lead the way have a tendency to be very short lived heroes. And as to my duties…" He paused, realizing that he was probably going to make her very upset if he hadn't already done so. The oppressive feeling of the vegetation, and ambient humidity, was stifling. Right away, he started sweating profusely, as his body prepared for the strain. The straps of his field kit and the transporter enhancers he was lugging clung to his body and made him feel trapped, ungainly. He advanced and almost shoved into his assigned soldier. "Sorry." He barely mumbled as he wanted to keep noise down to a minimum, but still felt self-conscious. Off to his left, he could see a bit of a shuffle as two men seemed to discuss who would be assigned to Doctor Caskie. ~Come on, she can't be that hard to handle, I hardly think it's worth fighting about now.~ This was going to be a slow crawl, one he'd normally be delighted by, if only the goal wasn't as circumscribed and the number of firearms imposing. Josh stood rooted to the spot as she mulled over the lecture she had just been given and it wasn't until the security officer partnering M'Empak caught up to here and looked at her questioningly, that she started to move. Keeping behind Rosenbauer she stomped along glaring at the back of his neck for a minute or two, all the while having an internal argument with herself about their clash. Eventually Josh's short temper asserted itself. ~Typical arrogant, self centred, know it all, SOB. How dare you talk to me like that!~ However the quiet, logical part that made her a doctor suddenly asserted itself too. ~He's doing it because that is his job. He just told you that and you chose to ignore that fact.~ ~He didn't have to be so darn rude about it though.~ ~You just insulted his professionalism. What would you do under the same circumstances?~ Josh chuckled to herself. ~Well, I can think of one or two medical procedures that aren't actually pleasant.~ ~Indeed, you are a pagan Josh, he is a gentleman. Go apologise.~ ~?!!~ ~Right now Josh before it gets any worse.~ Huffing to herself since she knew she was in the wrong Josh quickened her pace and caught up with the Security Officer. Clearing her throat she caught his eye. "Mr Rosenbauer, I would like to offer my apologies. I was totally in the wrong in what I said to you earlier. It was both unprofessional and unwarranted and I would like to sincerely apologise for my comments." (Reply Mike, any) (Posted by Marilyn) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Haldor II- Jungle- SO- Jolene Rojas- 1049) Jolene was assigned to team up with the Klingon Combat Nurse. According to the team leader the Nurse had been told to retrieve the prince and to ensure that he got back to the ship without worry. 'Rosy' had ordered her to stick with the Klingon and keep her safe while she did her job. More specifically, she had been ordered to stay joined at the hip, which meant basically, where the Klingon went, Jolene would follow. They had started through the jungle, the security officer shadowing the movements of her charge. The Klingon was large for a woman, and well-muscled, and Jolene couldn't help but find that attractive. ~Not to mention the rumors of aggression.~ she thought smiling. Her girlfriend had transferred off the Rosenante almost two months ago and Jolene found herself somewhat lonely. That loneliness was beginning to cause her eye to wander somewhat, although she had managed to remain dedicated to Clarissa, despite the distance and the time that she'd been gone. ~Of course it would be easier if Clarissa returned any of her messages, or even initiated a call here or there.~ she thought bitterly. Not one time in the two months after she'd left had they communicated. Jolene had sent several messages each with no reply. At first she had thought that maybe Clarissa was simply too busy getting settled in. That excuse might have stayed valid for a week or maybe two, but now, she simply knew that Clarissa was avoiding her. She frowned at the thought, certain that was the case although, she tried hard not to really admit the situation to herself. She watched as the Klingon medic stepped over a fallen log and noted her excellent balance and form. There was something feral in her stride that Jolene found appealing. And if there hadn't been a need for almost perfect silence, Rojas would certainly have at least started some small talk. As it was, however, that really wasn't an option at the moment. (reply none) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Haldor II- Jungle- SO- Mike Rosenbauer - 1050) Mike was steaming mad. Jennifer had called his professionalism into question, all because they had shared a dinner together in his quarters. He wouldn't deny that he found her attractive and the conversation with her stimulating, but they were on the job, and Mike knew that there was no room for personal feelings when you were a security officer on an away mission. Of course he had bitten her head off, after she had stated her piece and that wasn't a very nice thing to have said on his part, Still, he wasn't entirely certain that he wasn't harboring some more personal reason for wanting to team up with her. ~Jesus Mike, what could you possibly be thinking, teaming up with Caskie like that.~ He knew what he was thinking. He'd had an interest in her, since she had patched him up on the Hypatia, just a few minutes after the destruction of the Champlain. She had smiled at him through the bloody haze, and had said, "don't worry, everything is going to be just fine, I'll take care of you." Or something similar at least. He'd known then that there was an attraction there, at least a one sided one. The guys in the squad had picked up on it. Even Jolene had told him that 'he had it bad.' How he had ever managed to finally ask her out AND for her to accept the offer was still shrouded in a fog for him. So now they were walking through the jungle, Mike a bit miffed over everything, and Caskie equally so. ~She'll never want to talk to me again~ he thought to himself, as he hopped atop a downed tree, nearly a quarter of a deck thick. He turned and reached out his hand. "Need a hand Doctor Caskie?" he asked her. Clearing her throat she caught his eye as she looked up at him. "Mr. Rosenbauer, I would like to offer my apologies. I was totally in the wrong in what I said to you earlier. It was both unprofessional and unwarranted and I would like to sincerely apologize for my comments." He could feel the tension in his shoulders softening and he almost cried out for joy. "Don't worry about it Doctor. It's completely understandable given the circumstances." he replied, ~And you weren't entirely incorrect in your assumptions.~ "All I can say in my defense, is that it has been a long night, and I get grouchy when I don't get my beauty sleep." "Completely understandable." he said again nodding, still holding his hand out to assist her in traversing the fallen tree. "However you might like to inform, what was his name, ah, Tyrone, that his last grin isn't going to win him any points with me during his next physical. Oh, and be sure to warn him that I will be conducting it personally." "You're planning on giving him a hard time, eh?" Josh grinned, "No, I probably wont, but we don't really need to tell him that do we?" "Might be a good idea not to mention that until we are back on the ship perhaps. I'd hate to cramp his style down here." Mike nodded. "Do you need a hand now or what? We're holding up the line and The other half is getting farther and farther ahead." He seemed pretty smart and that was always a bonus in her book. She wore her brunette hair tied back in a ponytail to keep it off her neck. Her brown eyes scanned the horizon, or what passed for the horizon, almost without stop as they moved. "So Dorian," she said quietly after they'd been moving for a while, "I don't believe we've been introduced properly, My name is Eva Saint-Jean. You can call me Eva." ~Just like all the other cute guys.~ she thought with a wicked smile. Mosh, although a security officer was enthralled with engineering. His Bolian extended family included thirteen engineers and six architects. This gave him a fairly ground basis for working out his ideas. He had joined security, because no one else in his entire family unit had ever done so before and he wanted to be somewhat different. "And so with a team of three.. One carrying the compensators and the buffer, one the power pack and the other the matter resolvers, you could have a mobile transporter pad for away teams." "I'm still working on some of the finer details, for example, the Heisenberg compensator is still too large and too heavy to carry, unless maybe you're a Klingon, and the power packs hardly hold enough charge for even one transport, but I'll get there eventually…" "I'm telling you, with a hand full of these things, you could set up and emergency planet side transporter hub in no time flat. I've just got to figure out how to solve the ACB problem and how to miniaturize the transporter sensor suite so that it can be included as well." (reply Matrix) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Haldor II- Jungle- SO- Tyrone Cooper- 1100) ~Rosy must hate me right now~ Tyrone thought as he struggled to keep pace with the Vulcan Lieutenant as she moved quickly through the jungle. The heat was oppressive, and Tyrone's uniform tunic was already soaked while Sullivan was hardly glistening. The Vulcan body was well suited to high temperatures but Tyrone would have thought that the humidity would have taken a toll on Sullivan. That most assuredly was not the case. It was almost as if the Lieutenant were taking a nice calm stroll on the holodeck. For Tyrone, it was like running a marathon in a steam sauna on a treadmill. The security man, thanked his African heritage for at least some resistance to the heat and humidity. A quick glance behind him told him that the others were even more impacted then he was. Perhaps that was why Mike had chosen him to shadow the away team commander. The terrain wasn't too terribly bad. Other than the occasional massive old growth tree blocking their direction of travel, some almost a third of a deck high, there was little undergrowth or obstacles to deal with. Twice Tyrone spotted a curious insect the size of a terran pigeon that buzzed by them. It looked bizarre, almost like a ten-legged millipede-like creature with dragonfly wings and shrimp eyestalks. Then there was the stinger. The creature was obviously large enough to kill small animals, but it didn't seem too interested in the members of the away team, other than as a passive observer. Tyrone imagined that the bug had some sort of venom glands as well, and so he was sharply on the lookout for any sudden buzzing inbound attacks. He glanced up to see Sullivan disappearing through a patch of ground cover. The ground cover itself was odd, since the canopy shade seemed to choke it all out. As Tyrone followed, he spotted Sullivan standing just beyond the foliage. On the ground there was signs of newer growth, although something didn't look quite right about it. Ty bent down and used his fingers to probe the ground. He came up with charcoal pieces. "Looks like they burned off a circle of vegetation before they put up the shield. This is all new growth." he commented. Ahead of them was a manicured area, obviously to the other side of the atmospheric shield. Tyrone tossed a small piece of the charcoal forward. The shield buzzed and changed colors, the charcoal fell unharmed to the ground. The other members of the team were just now entering the 'clearing'. Tyrone pulled his tricorder out and took a couple of scans as the other started arriving. "The guards are about 15-minutes away from out current location, roughly northwest of here." he reported. The other is almost opposite of us." (reply Sullivan iyw, Any) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Haldor II - The Clearing - 2O/CTAC Lieutenant T'Larah Sullivan - 1103) T'Larah thought it was interesting that only two thirds of the away team followed her advice in wearing ultraviolet filtered goggles to protect against the blue giant's abnormally high UV out put. Her second eye lid would protect her, the humans had been warned that high output UV emission could lead to blindness, some declined the goggles offered anyway. The phototrophic uniforms the entire team was wearing had already adjusted to the local ambient light, colors and tones, providing near perfect camouflage. As the away team trudged through the jungle-esque terrain, T'Larah had reached the clearing. Her team mate Cooper had reached the clearing shortly after her, the heat was getting to him, perspiring profusely as he came up next to her, he bent down and examined the ground. "Looks like they burned off a circle of vegetation before they put up the shield. This is all new growth." he then grabbed a piece of charred plant material and threw it against the shield, which buzzed and changed colors, but in no way inhibited the trajectory of the material which landed un-harmed on the well manicured lawn on the other side. T'Larah nodded her agreement with his assessment. She brought her phaser rifle up to the high ready and looked through it's optics. T'Larah signaled with her other hand as the rest of the team began to enter the clearing. She signaled for them to fall back into the foliage to stay under concealment. "Where are the perimeter guards?" she asked. "The guards are about 15-minutes away from out current location, roughly northwest of here." he reported. The other is almost opposite of us." T'Larah adjusted the magnification on her optics to see just over one statute mile away, and began to scan in a north westerly direction. Quickly she found the guard in her sights. "I see him," she said barely above a whisper, "unfortunately he is moving away from our position, he is already out side of effective phaser stun range, are the guards moving in a clockwise pattern like in the briefing?" she asked. (Reply SO Cooper) "I want to take out the perimeter guards as close to simultaneously as possible with out having to break radio silence. Matrix, you and Mosh mover westerly around the perimeter. If you encounter visible sensor hubs on the way to the shack with the field generators, put them in a feedback loop so that they give no information to the control center. Take out the fields like we discussed, the stun grenades will be your signal. Neutralize anyone who attempts to approach the shack that is not starfleet. Go." she ordered. (Reply Lt Matrix, SO Mosh) "Rojas and M'Epak, when the shield goes down, make your way straight to the Meldovian. Use stun to neutralize the attendants unless you have no choice don't use deadly force. Once you have secured him, beam up the Meldovian, then report to Doctor Caskie's team and assist in their mission, understood?" T'Larah said. (Reply SO Rojas, CN M'Epak) "Everyone else will be following me, for an assault on the house. Doctor Caskie, you and your escort will be setting up a command/triage position in the main building. As soon as you find an appropriate location, let me know, I saw from the sensor readings that the galley appeared to be an easily defensible location, you may want to try there. Weaver, you and St. Jean will secure the communications array and wait for Cooper and I to assault the dormitories. When that is completed, the remainder of the away team will take the command post in the building and once that is complete, we will search for intelligence, we will take the leader back to the ship and the brig for questioning. Does everyone understand?" she said. What it really amounted to was that he was showing off to his captive audience. "Now, ladies and gentlemen if you look at this scar here." He traced it with his fingers from top to bottom. "Who can tell me what they think caused this?" One of the junior med techs spoke up. "It's a knife scar." The EMH rolled his eyes. "Yes crewman, of course it's a knife scar, any first year med tech could tell you that. But what kind of a knife scar is it?" From somewhere in the back a voice stage whispered, "A sharp one." and most of the folk crowded around the bed began to, if not laugh, at least cough to cover it, or suddenly stare down at the floor not wanting to catch anyone else's eyes. The EMH rolled his eyes but chose to ignore the comment. "This scar was caused by a Klingon Ma'kleth. Notice the two parallel scars either side. That's how you can tell. This reminds me of the time I ,,,,,,,,,," His lecture was stopped short by the patient grabbing his hand. “Stop it; that tickles” “Where am I and how did I get here?” The EMH quickly removed his hand from the patient's grasp. "You are in Sickbay Ensign. It seems that Holomarine Ramierez ran amok yesterday and you, fortunately, were one of our luckier casualties." Ensign Raschen snickered to himself "After last night, I think I know what to send my old competitors for Christmas" Chance quipped. The EMH rolled his eyes again. "I rather doubt that you will be allowed to send them a copy of that particular program Ensign, if that is what you mean." Realising that most of his audience has slipped away during his conversation with the ensign the EMH huffed. "Well, anyway ensign you are progressing nicely and once the CMO returns from her jaunt she will no doubt wish to examine you again." He made it sound like the CMO had taken the weekend off to go to Risa rather than being on an away team mission and flicking the covers back over the ensign he excused himself. "Now ensign if you will forgive me, there are other patients who need my attention." Not even bothering to walk the EMH flicked himself offline and appeared a second or two later at another bed. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1330) Ahmed shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Since the holographic marine had completed his rampage, leaving a trail of carnage in his wake, Ahmed had tripled the security officers monitoring the computer access. He had just concluded a communication with one of those officers. The captain had immediately dispatched a security team to the supposed source of the intrusion, only to be led directly to an unmanned station in main engineering. It was apparent that someone had gained access without authorization and that they had some sort of program in place that would prevent tracking it back to the source. He had of course ordered a complete computer core file search. The newest files that were discovered pointed a very terrible finger at his security chief. Ahmed took another sip of his Turkish coffee and tapped his commbadge, "Salid to Raschen and Janeway, please report to the ready room at once."
