Oh and Mr. Rosenbauer, thank you for the invitation. I appreciate it" She continued. "Alright, I'm on swing duty for the next week starting tomorrow, so let me check the schedule. Josh was quite surprised to actually here someone call her Jennifer. The only folk who had ever called her that were her parents and one particular teacher at school who she had absolutely hated at the time. He had taught biology at Kirkwall High and for some reason she never, ever, seemed able to please him. Every time she was wrong about something he would pick her up on it and would start every sentence about it with. 'Well, Jennifer I guess you got it wrong again.' It wasn't until years later that she realised that everything he had said was deliberate and designed to make her try harder. It had worked, however she still sometimes got the chills when someone called her by that name. "I'm on swing duty for the next week starting tomorrow, so let me check the schedule. I'm pretty sure I'll be off Friday night. What do you say we plan tentatively for 1900? I make a great veal parmigana and we can have some spaghetti marinara if you'd like. I've got a great bottle of wine and I'll make everything from scratch. What do you say to that? Oh and Jennifer? You can call me Mike." Josh grinned at him. "That sounds fine to me Mike. Barring any unforeseeable problems in Sickbay I should be free well before them. How about if I bring dessert then. I'm not exactly the greatest cook but I make a pretty mean Zabaglione. If that's fine by you, it's fine by me." "I think we have a date." (reply Caskie) "You, know I'd love to stay and chat, but I have a report to file and a security escort to arrange for our guest here. I'll see you again on Friday, just let me know if something comes up and we can reschedule." (reply Caskie) Mike smiled and turning headed for the door. The stars immediately took a dip away from the center of the display, and then began spinning around properly in a normal helicoidal fashion. "So, what do you think the problem could be?" asked Ensign Weaver. "The display is very dim. The holographic simulation is obviously not getting enough data at the correct speed or the power is too low," said T'Kron. "That could be caused by the power bus or by other components affecting the data feed. The spinning effect that you could be referring to is the result of the use of the ship's spiral drive, but the display system should be able to compensate for that as well." "I checked the manual." Dorian tapped a PADD on his desk. "And I needed to reconfigure the ODN regulator of the console for the data speed. I'm pretty sure I have it nailed down to cue. As for the power..." he threw his hands up in the air. "I've never been much for live power conduits. That is where your expertise comes in, right?" Dorian tried to flash a smile, but still felt a little powerless. T'Kron nodded and pulling out his tools and laying them out, he pulled the cover off of the science officer's console and began using his tricorder to check for shorts and malfunctions. Dorian couldn't help but peer over the engineer's shoulder as he worked. "I know I said I wasn't the one gifted for all your technical wonders, but shouldn't that little gizmo there be, well, not dangling against the isolinear board like that?" ~And now, now you've really put your foot in your mouth.~ T'Kron remained unflappable as he studied the continuous results of his scans. "Ensign Weaver, if you would like to participate in order to learn to make repairs to this equipment in the future, perhaps you could pick up a tricorder of your own and scan another part of the console, such as the power feeds." ~Fair enough.~ Dorian blushed and scrambled to find a tricorder. After a few seconds of fumbling with drawers and cabinets, he found one inside a cabinet conveniently labeled "Scanning Equipment." "Got it, Sir." Dorian removed the panel at the base of the console and started slowly scanning the wiring. "What am I supposed to be looking for, exactly?" "Check that power is coming through the feeds at 5.30 gigawatts per second," replied T'Kron in his matter of fact style. "There should not be more than a .2 variance." Consulting his tricorder again, he added, "I have found a short in the photonic flux imager. That may help improve the holographic display." Dorian scanned attentively, slowly to make sure he got a good reading. "The power feed's source is within the parameters you specified. I think you've found our culprit." Good, now he wouldn't have to go through too much backlog to catch up with his work. Reaching in with his spanner, T'Kron did a quick shut off of power to the component; the display disappeared. He repaired the small short. Restoring power, he noted the display was much brighter, had steadied and ceased its spiral motion. Dorian breathed a sigh of relief. True, this had been in no way life threatening, this was just a science lab filled with holograms after all, but he'd have hated to have worked for nothing, and wanted to be as productive as possible. Especially on such a large ship, with such a need for personnel as the fleet was feeling right now, he needed to be on top of things. "Your help here is much appreciated, especially on such short notice. You're quite skilled." Dorian somehow refrained himself from the impulse to shake T'Kron's hand. Now that would have been an unmistakable faux pas. Picking up his tools, T'Kron replaced them into his toolkit. Recalling the courteous human custom of thanking and receiving thanks, T'Kron tried to respond appropriately. "You are welcome, Mr. Weaver. Remember to scan each component of the system the next time you have difficulties. I hope this has helped you to learn more about the equipment you are using." T'Kron picked up his tool kit and headed for the door. "I must return to Main Engineering." Nodding politely to the Science officer, T'Kron left Astrometrics. He had not met Chef Marcia Gastineau but had been directed by the CO and FO to set up a buffet for selected ship's officers. The Broth was exceptionally delicate and had to be stirred constantly once it reached a temperature just below it's evaporation point. If she stopped or slowed down too much, the entire concoction would be lost in a puff of fragrant steam, and she'd have to start all over again. =^=Chief Sheridan to Chief Gastineau=^= ~What the?!?~ she thought as she instinctively jumped at the sudden sound and the broth popped and evaporated in a complete waste of her time. The bar was straight across from the elevator each taking one corner of the hex. There were four side stages, each with a female dancer enthralling a handful of male patrons swiping credits away at the readers, competing for the dancer's attention. Dominating the room, the center stage was the largest, boasting two dancing poles and a dancer for each, dancing together and separately for one single synergic show. All the floors except for the stages were covered in a dense red carpet. The stages were a smooth reflective obsidian, probably mined from some volcanic planet polished to perfection. Tables were arranged facing the nearest stage except for a cluster on the right which were the VIP tables, reserved for the Captains and high paying regulars, which Ed was both. Nestled between two of the side stages and elevated to give a better view of the center stage. Ed's walking in sparked a reaction from the female employees. "Hi Eddy." half a dozen beautiful scantily clad females of various species said pleasantly simultaneously. ~It's good to be me.~ he thought. "Hey ladies, so who gets to come with me to my table today?" he said with an ear to ear grin. Those six ladies came rushing to Ed's side all speaking so fast and loud he had trouble telling what came from whom. "Pick me Eddy!" " I'll make it worth your while!" "You owe me!" "She got you last time!" Some of them started pushing and shoving to get closer. "And you." Ed pointed to an Orion girl with raven black hair and a pale jade skin. She wore a cocktail dress, if you could call it a dress, consisting of just enough material to make four small handkerchiefs, held on by two thin straps tied together where her shoulders met her neck. All the other girls let out sighs of disappointment at the same time while the lucky Orion girl giggled with glee. She immediately draped herself on Ed's arm as if she belonged there. She pulled Raschen's weathered face to look at her as she looked up. "Buy a girl a drink?" she asked seductively. "You read my mind." Ed said as they walked to his usual table. ~Take your time kid, I'll be waiting.~ He thought hoping Chance really did take his time getting there. So much so in fact that her stomach started to grumble, reminding her that she hadn't eaten since breakfast. The smells were enticing and drove Josh immediately over to the table. Eyeing up all the goodies she could see a great deal of her favourites. Lobster Bisque, salmon and beef to name but a few. With her fingers twitching to start in on the food, Josh quickly decided to pick up a glass of sparkling white wine and move over to the others present, thankfully as far away from the food as she could get but still be in the same room. It didn't take long before the other officers started to arrive. Lieutenant Sullivan was one of the first and the Vulcan officer took a few moments to peruse the food laid out for everyone's consumption. Marcia smiled, since T'Larah did not make any unwelcome remarks or gestures that indicated that she was very disappointed. It was rumored around the ship that T'Larah Sullivan was one of the most difficult people to please aboard the Rosenante. She was know to be very particular about how she liked things. If Marcia could please her, then all was well in the universe, at least for the time being. "Everything meet your standards of approval Lieutenant?" Marcia asked as she approached T'Larah. "No, I see that you have prepared a vast plethora of food, and it all looks well prepared, but if you don't mind, I will stick to the Vulcan dishes you have prepared." she said in a kind tone. ~Well at least she was honest.~ "I don't mind at all. After a few moments he realized he'd heard enough and moved to the head of the table. He had just settled into his seat when he noticed Josh arrive. She eyeballed the table hungrily and Ahmed was glad that he had decided to order dinner for the briefing. Mister Raschen soon arrived bearing a bottle of what appeared to be alcohol. At first Ahmed frowned, but then he decided it wasn't such a bad thing provided that no one imbibed enough to impair their judgment, beside while they were on the planet they might be drinking alcohol. He found it unlikely that there would be synthehol available. “Good evening everyone” Chance said. "Good evening Mister Raschen" Ahmed replied. Ahmed replied. "You may, of course share your home-made whiskey, but only in moderation. We still have a mission to undertake later tonight." (reply Raschen) Not long after that, the remainder of the senior officers and away team members arrived, followed by Lieutenant Ro'Dal. She gave a quick greeting then took a seat. "Well now that everyone has arrived, we can all help ourselves to some of Chef Gastineau's fine cooking." He joined the others in the buffet line and once they had all filled their plates and started eating, Ahmed began the meeting in earnest. The idea here was to be informal, and so the briefing would be conducted in a conversational style. "As you all know we will be arriving at Barakos VI around 2000 hours. Once we arrive, we will be sending down away teams beginning at 2230 hours. The goal of the mission is to acquire intelligence that will lead us to the location and the eventual rescue of the Prince. Now I'm not going to tell you how to behave while you're down there. You'll have to do what's best in the situation that you find yourself in, but I will be looking at detailed reports when you return, and if I deem that you have done anything that is beyond reasonable, we will be having a discussion." Ahmed sipped his coffee. "Here's how I'd like to see the teams. Team One will consist of T'Larah, Raschen, Sheridan and Mister Smith , You will be heading to the Entertainment center, which as I understand it is a combination brothel, bar and gambling Hall. You will be meeting with Easy Ed, a bounty hunter to discuss possible intelligence and to try to develop leads. Lieutenant Sullivan you can select any Marines or security personnel you'd like to add to the team. While this is Mister Raschen's territory, Lieutenant Sullivan will have the final command authority over this team." (reply T'Larah) "Team Two will consist of Lieutenants Janeway, Bird and Dralar. You will be meeting with a smuggler named Orldar Massox. I will provide you with a dossier. He will be conveying to us, credit certificates and latinum credits for our operation. These certificates will need to be authenticated at a trade house into usable credit. Dralar has some experience in this and so will be helping in that task. You will need to acquire a shuttle that you will use to return to the ship later. This is because latinum can not be transported and we will need the bulk of the coin to bribe persons of interest for information. You will need a solid security or marine escort to keep the monies secure. Lieutenant Janeway will be in command of this team." (reply Janeway) "And team three will consist of Ro'Dal, Caskie, T'kron and Weaver. You will be reconnoitering the Slave market on the off chance that our Prince has ended up there. See what sorts of scuttlebutt you can uncover and see if you can find any other Cartenian that may have been taken when the prince was abducted. I want you to take Nunez with you, other than that, you can choose any other security and/or marines to go along that you'd like. Lieutenant Ro'Dal will have command of team three." (reply Ro'Dal) "Everyone else I have not mentioned will remain aboard the Rosenante." Ahmed took another sip of his coffee. "The mission objective is apparent, the means to achieve it are not. You may be called on to improvise. I remind you that you are officers, but that you also have a moral obligation to complete this objective and prevent the needless deaths of millions in the continuation of this war. Ever since then she'd grown hungrier by the minute, and had decided that under no circumstances was she going to sit in the Captain's Mess and be tortured for ages by the delicious aromas that were already assailing her nostrils, and causing her stomach to turn somersaults inside in what felt like a frantic search for something to eat. ~My stomach is gnawing at my spine, when do we eat?~ She thought, eying the buffet table with desperate longing, where an assortment of delectables was displayed. ~If the Captain makes us wait to eat much longer I will be forced to chew on the table top.~ Ro' looked at the table and nodded to herself, it might be a little hard chewing but she was sure she'd manage. Raschen had brought some moonshine with him but Ro' politely declined some when offered it as she considered that she was working still, even though it was a dinner meeting, besides she preferred ale or wine and rarely drank hard liquor. The Captain wasted no time in addressing their mission, telling them that he was sending down three away teams, team one headed by the FO was to go to the Entertainment center, team two by the 2O, was to go to meet a smuggler named Orldar Massox and team three headed by herself would be going to the Slave Market to look for the kidnapped Prince and/or any other Cartienians. She had acknowledged his trust in her abilities with a smile and a 'yes Sir', and gave Dr. Caskie, T'Kron and Weaver a nod, but then had asked: "What exactly is scuttlebutt, Sir?" After a few minutes the ringer on his terminal started going off. After sitting in his desk chair, Chance pulled on a grey T-shirt that had a picture of the Federation Irregular Forces flag on the left breast that read 'Auxiliary Power Redefined' under it. "If you're not an insanely gorgeous woman, I don't want to hear it right now." Chance declared after hitting the connect button. Shaking his head, Chance got back up out of bed thinking ~No rest for the wicked. ~ But said "come in." As he recognized the Arbiter's Deltan aide, Chance asked "Is there anything I could do, uh, for you Miss Rone?" "Yes, mister Raschen there is. Or perhaps I should say Captain Temerarious?" She added with a questioning tone. Raschen raised an eyebrow as he noticed the look in her eyes that said 'I know about the skeletons in your closet'. Then he nodded his head and said "Alright come on in and have a seat in the rocking chair" as he went over and grabbed his surveillance inhibitor off of the table. "You seem to have done pretty well for yourself since the end of the war. I wonder if they know about how you..." Putting up his hand, Chance interrupted her in mid-sentence "Stop right there, before anything else is said; how private is this conversation to be?" "Oh, I'd say it should be very private," she replied with a feminine coo. "You know just between the two of us." She watched as he turned on the device and set it between them. "Old habits die pretty hard don't they? I heard about the Star Hawk. That was a shame I understand she was quite the privateer's vessel." “She was designed for a bounty hunter, built as a blockade runner, and was perfect as a smuggler. She was great for what I used her for.” "It should be pretty straightforward to you what I want from you Chance. I want you to do me an itsy-bitsy little favor." Chance had a hard look in his eyes as he raised an eyebrow “There’s no such thing as an ‘itsy-bitsy favor’ so cut the crap lady; what is it you want.” He said in a pirate’s style business tone of voice with his hands on his hips. "Help me find and recover my sister from Orion Slavers while we are in their space." “The sister that disappeared a while back; No way, it’s impossible.” As he responded to what Rone said, Chance pulled out a chair and sat down in it. "Nothing's impossible, Chance. Certainly you understand that, a man with your renown amongst the Orions could easily pull off something that simple. Help me with this and in return I won't have anyone re-open any investigations into some of the darker aspects of your F.I.F career. I know that such an investigation would uncover a lot of information about some very powerful and secretive people. Some of whom would rather see you dead then reveal their roles in certain unsavory aspects of their participation in events past. And besides, I know about how some friends of yours ensured a particularly lenient trial when it came to the Dennison or have you forgotten?" “No I haven’t forgotten; and considering that they still hadn’t paid me for ‘services rendered’ I think it was a fair trade. But if you talk, those people you mentioned, they will kill you long before they do me because you’re simply just another bureaucratic aide sweetheart, were as I…” Chance paused as he stood up, walked up to the aide, put his hands on the back of the chair she was in, bent down, and brought his face close enough to hers that he could lick her lips if he chose to, “I am a rarity amongst the stars.” Chance said as he almost hissed the last couple words with his teeth clinched together and a hard look in his eyes. "You know the problem with being a rarity, Chance? Everybody wants you and no one wants you to be possessed by anyone else. I can name at least half a dozen individual governments that would love to try you for crimes against their people. The kinds of governments that would put considerable pressure on the Fed president, and the council to see to it that you are turned over to them; And despite what you may think about me being just another aide, you'd better reconsider your opinion of me." Chance grabbed the grey pants with gold piping and dark blue button-up shirt that was draped over the back of the rocking chair that Rone was sitting in and he started to change shirts as he spoke in a much gentler and almost playful tone of voice “Quid-Pro-Quo darling. I know what you want, although you haven’t told me anything about her; but what do you have to offer as payment for my services? Besides your silence that is, because I can insure that right now all on my own.” "By killing me?" Metia laughed, "Please I'm not an amateur. There are well over a dozen data packets primed and ready. Each of which will be transmitted automatically if I don't check in by a certain time through a certain channel. Besides that if you want something a little more tangible..." she let her voice trail off. As Rone spoke, Chance was putting his pants on over his gym shorts. “Please; surely she is worth more to you than that?” He flatly asked sarcastically as he started to put on his boots that his pants got tucked into. "She's worth more to me than you are Raschen; she’s worth more to me than this ship and her crew too. You might want to consider that as well. You'd be amazed at what I'd do to protect my little sister." Once he finished getting his boots on, Chance walked over to the table that had his weapons on it “Yeah, to bad you can’t protect what you can’t find, otherwise we wouldn’t having this little chat now.” He said in an almost uncaring manner. She stood up and strolled over to a cabinet. "Have you heard from your mother lately Chance?" “Why; are you about to tell me that you’re my new step-sister and that I would be doing this cause you’re family? Chance asked sarcastically because he actually did stay in regular contact with his mom, Margaret, at least once every other week; if not every week. "Oh no, but right now as we are speaking she is currently on her way to a very nice hotel because of a contest she's won, where people I know will be very near at hand. Of course, she'll have a fabulous time." Metia said smiling there was a hardly veiled threat contained in her eyes. As he listened to what she had to say, Chance put on his western gun belt that he carried his Colt Peacemaker styled disruptor pistol; his suspenders/shoulder holsters that held his 2 Bowie knives and twin phase pistols in; and pocket watch/flash bomb. After a slight break in the conversation, Chance finished gearing-up and put on a long jacket that went down to his knees and covered all his weapons. Chance said in a simple, polite, but forceful tone “So why go through the trouble to find me? Why do you want my help?” he asked in a curious but almost uncaring manner, but had a gut feeling that he already knew the answers. "I wasn't originally looking for you, but it just so happened that when I found out you were on the Rosenante and that this same ship was going to undertake the mission to find the Prince... Well let's just say that my interest in you blossomed. After all the famous Chance Temerarious couldn't possibly fail now could he?" He walked over to her as she spoke and interrupted her saying “Okay…Okay... Okay! I’ll help find your sister; just shut the hell up alright? Here are my terms though; you will be reimbursed me for every bit of coin I spend on this little scavenger hunt plus 20%. If need be we can find other means of payment that might not require you to use this” he said as he smacked her on her butt. Metia started slightly when his hand landed. It stung slightly. She turned towards him and gave him a wicked little smile. "Why Mister Raschen, I didn't realize you had it in you to treat a lady so." she added feigning innocence. She bat her lashes at him a couple of times then wiped the smile off her face. Chance held his hand out to her and asked “Do we have an accord?” Metia took his hand in a firm grip. "We do, but only concerning your own monies, not those provided by the ship." “Good” he said as he handed her a PADD “Now give me a general, ball park physical description of her without a name, but be very specific about her skills, abilities, and intellectual attributes.” "Easy enough. She's my identical twin. So now you know what she looks like. As far as skills, abilities and mental attributes, She's a skilled diplomat, very skilled in negotiation. She was a dancer before that. Good with numbers and very artistic. But most importantly, she's a Deltan Female." She said as she added several other items to the PADD. As she put the information he wanted into the PADD, Chance gathered up the last little odds and ends of his equipment so he could leave for the mission and visit his grandfather.
