"Lieutenant Sullivan, your presence is requested on the bridge, please acknowledge." came the voice. "Sullivan here. Understood." she responded. She got up and headed to the bridge. Soon T'Larah's sandalled feet stepped off the turbo lift and on to the bridge. Still wearing her robes, she earned a few quizzical looks and a stare from the bridge crew. "I was told to report to the bridge." T'Larah said stoically to the young Lieutenant, obviously not the Captain. "Yes Lieutenant, we have just been informed that our original itinerary for meeting the Rosenante, has been moved. I was told to inform you." he said matter of factly. "So, I'll be staying longer?" she inquired. "No actually you will be leaving us quite a bit sooner." he informed her. ~ A wormhole?~ T'Larah thought as her left eyebrow raised inquisitively. "Shorter? Please explain." she said curiosity piqued. "Absolutely, you see, we were told and expected the Rosenante to be in the Optima Prime system, which is approximately one week away from Vulcan. We were now told that she has been called away to Davros III, which is considerably closer. Our ETA is now 1900 hours today. So you and the other officer should prepare to disembark soon." Lieutenant Xim explained. "Other officer? I was told I was the only officer arriving from Vulcan to the Rosenante." T'Larah tried to clarify. "Yes, but did you think we were only transferring personnel from Vulcan?" Xim inquired. ~Logical argument.~ T'Larah praised him in her own head. "Very well, which transporter room should I report to?" she asked, preparing for her arrival to her new home. "We will know closer to arrival time, you will be paged." Xim said. "Very well, was there anything else?" she asked clasping her own wrists in front of her so the long sleeves of her robe met, creating a nearly seamless single sleeve. "No, you can go." Xim said smiling, he obviously enjoyed the power being the watch officer gave him. T'Larah stepped off to go prepare. ~I wonder who the other officer is?~ T'Larah wondered to her self. (Reply None) (Posted by Todd) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Davros III Mining Colony – Mining Tunnels - CMO Lt (jg) Josh Caskie - Day 8 -1757) Josh thought about everything that she had heard and an idea began forming in her brain and she turned back to Nachook. "Would it be possible for me to extract the matrix from your body without damaging you? If so then we could load in into a photon torpedo and fire it at the planet from our ship." (Reply Nachook) "Ok, why don't we go see Commander Salid and see what he says." Josh crossed to the FO and informed her of her idea, waiting to here his decision. (Reply Ahmed) (Posted by Marilyn) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Davros III Mining Colony- Tracker - Sharott Nachook - 1758) The human that Nachook now called Josh, continued to use her hand scanning device to study the details of his anatomy. It was a bizarre looking device with only a single data display area. How the Humans could handle only one data input at a time was difficult for Nachook to comprehend. After a couple of moments, the human looked at him with her two unsettling eyes. and spoke. "Would it be possible for me to extract the matrix from your body without damaging you? If so then we could load it in into a photon torpedo and fire it at the planet from our ship." Nachook blinked for a few minutes as the translator worked through her words. "The matrix is a highly advanced viral soup that is released into an airborne state upon contact with any atmosphere. It resides in a central holding sack inside my body. The Sack is vestigial, a leftover from where the males of my species incubated the eggs of our kind. The sack membrane is interlaced with blood vessels, once the enzyme breaks down the inner sack wall enough to breach the blood barrier I will begin to exhale the virus, which in turn will begin to consume my body. Perhaps if you had a sophisticated lab and could work under very hazardous conditions, it could be done. There will be a risk of immediate death to anyone performing such an operation. Removal of the matrix has been performed before, but very rarely." he replied. The human regarded Sharott for a few moments in contemplation. "Ok, why don't we go see Commander Salid and see what he says." Nachook followed Josh to the Commander, at first a little confused by the term 'go see' when he could clearly see the human from their current location. He stood unmoving as the human female reviewed her idea for the approval of the Alpha male human. When the repairer of injuries to the body was finished, Nachook noticed that the human male furrowed the flesh on his face. He then asked a single question. "Can you absolutely guarantee me that you can contain it in such a way that it can not possible get free into the ship's system? As I understand it, this is so virulent that if it escapes every life form on the ship will be killed." (Reply Caskie) (posted by Daniel Greene) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Davros III Mining Colony- FO- Lt. Cmdr. Ahmed Ibn Salid- 1800) Ahmed had listened carefully to the report that Ro'Dal had given concerning the encounter that Bravo team had experienced. The more he thought about it the more he realized that they were in an untenable position. ~It's time to go and seek an alternate method.~ he thought. He motioned for Ro'Dal to accompany him. he wanted the security officer close by, in case there was further problems. Ahmed stepped over to Chief Fuller. It was clear that he was a very skilled Field medic. He was a definite asset to the team. "Chief Fuller, a word please?" (reply Fuller) "About Janeway, can he be moved? I believe that we will be moving out very soon." (reply Fuller) "Excellent, recruit anyone you require to assist if need be. Be ready to move out in the next five minutes." (reply Fuller) Once Fuller had moved away to carry out his orders, Ahmed turned to the security officer. he pulled a medical tricorder from the extra equipment that Fuller had brought and walked over towards the spot where Abernathy lay. With a single glance at Ro'Dal to ensure that she was close by, Ahmed conducted a detailed biological scan of the fallen crew member. what he saw didn't surprise him considering everything that the Alien had told them about the nanite colonies that now coursed through Abernathy's body. He held the tricorder out to the security officer. "It appears that Mister Abernathy is deceased. His biological functions appear to have stopped. The only activity I am showing is the nanites coursing through his body. Ensign Ro'Dal, so you see any indication that Mister Abernathy can be saved at this time, considering our situation and his current biological state?" (reply Ro'Dal) Ahmed regarded her for a few moments before asking her another question. "Do you still feel it is prudent to withdraw from these mines and find an alternate means of handling this problem?" (reply Ro'Dal) "Ensign, get everything ready to move out. We're leaving very shortly. I want you to plot the fastest most direct route out of these mines. I want to be outside as soon as possible. I will consult with you in five minutes time." (reply Ro'Dal) Ahmed stood and slung the spare medical tricorder over his shoulder. He turned just in time to see Caskie and the Opthidian approaching. When the duo had arrived, Josh pitched Ahmed an alternate plan to resolve the current situation from the relative safety of the ship. All things considered there seemed to be a better chance of her plan succeeding rather than his own thought of himself and Ro'Dal trying to breach the deeper levels of the mine and fight their way to the breeding pool. As it was, it was likely to be a hard fight out of the mines, in a direction that they knew. He could only imagine the problems that the team would face trying to wander around in the depths of the mine looking for a single location, while trying to keep themselves alive. Josh's plan must have had some merit in order to have convinced Nachook to consider leaving the mines with no guarantee that they would be able to get this deep again. The thought of a virus that consumed flesh getting loose and ravaging the entirety of the ship held no joy for the first officer. But still, if the choice was the possible death of the crew, against the possible death of countless billions, should these nanites somehow manage to escape the planet, he'd rather loose the ship and Ahmed was certain that the captain would agree with him. Being out of communication left him little option to confer. That meant he was on his own. The decision and all it's implications were squarely placed on his shoulders. When she had finished Ahmed looked her squarely in the eye and asked. ""Can you absolutely guarantee me that you can contain it in such a way that it can not possible get free into the ship's system? As I understand it, this is so virulent that if it escapes every life form on the ship will be killed." (reply Caskie) He thought for a few moments. Finally, he nodded, "Okay, you've convinced me." he replied, "What about Abernathy and the other miners? It's my understanding that they are beyond hope and that they have been killed by the nanites so that their bodies could be colonized. Do you concur with that assessment Doctor Caskie?" (reply Caskie) Ahmed nodded heavily. He turned his head up to look at the officers with him. He could tell that their nerves were on edge. "We're moving out. We will be moving as quickly as possible. Mister Ro'Dal, you will be leading us out. Mister Janeway, You and I will bring up the rear of the group. Everyone else will be between us. Watch your intersections, and do not hesitate to provide any fire as necessary to get us clear of here. When we are clear, we are to beam directly to the ship. Mister Nachook, I would appreciate it if you Doctor Caskie and lieutenant Bird would position yourself in the middle of the group. Mister Matrix, you'll be with Janeway and I. Chief Fuller, position yourself wherever you need to. Okay people, Double time, let's get off this planet. Move out." (reply All on Away Team) (posted by Daniel) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Davros III Mining Colony- Sec.O Ensign Ro'Dal - 1801) Ahmed motioned for Ro'Dal to accompany him. Immediately she walked over to him and followed him over to where Chief Fuller was and silently listened to their conversation about Lt. Janeway and whether he could be moved. Once Fuller had moved away to carry out his orders, the FO turned to the Takaran and pulled a medical tricorder from the extra equipment that Fuller had brought. He then walked over towards the spot where Abernathy lay. Again, Ro'Dal followed him, a little anxious that he could be putting himself in danger by his close proximity to the fallen man. Ro'Dal watched him as he conducted a detailed biological scan of Abernathy, or what used to be Abernathy and held the tricorder out to her so she could see the readings. "It appears that Mister Abernathy is deceased. His biological functions appear to have stopped. The only activity I am showing is the nanites coursing through his body. Ensign Ro'Dal, so you see any indication that Mister Abernathy can be saved at this time, considering our situation and his current biological state?" "Negative Sir." She shook her head. "A dead man cannot be saved, my concern is with the living here." Ahmed regarded her for a few moments before asking her another question. "Do you still feel it is prudent to withdraw from these mines and find an alternate means of handling this problem?" "My opinion remains unchanged, Commander. I believe we have spent to many hours down here already and the longer we stay, the less likely we are to get out of here alive." She replied honestly, her face sober. "Ensign, get everything ready to move out. We're leaving very shortly. I want you to plot the fastest most direct route out of these mines. I want to be outside as soon as possible. I will consult with you in five minutes time." Ro' sighed with relief, at last the FO was listening to her sound advice. "Yes Sir, I will do so immediately." The Takaran security officer mentally went over their long journey into the depths of the planet. She had memorized their trek through the maze of tunnels and on revising the journey, she knew that going out would be quicker as there would be no need to scrutinize the off shoots, that led to dead ends. She walked over to one of the two men guarding the chamber entrance and told one to fetch the two Alpha team members, who had gone to watch for possible infiltrators along the tunnel Janeway and his Beta team had come down. When he had trotted away, she returned to where the FO was to await his consultation just as he was asking the Doctor a question. "Can you absolutely guarantee me that you can contain it in such a way that it can not possible get free into the ship's system? As I understand it, this is so virulent that if it escapes every life form on the ship will be killed." (reply Caskie) He thought for a few moments. Finally, he nodded, "Okay, you've convinced me." he replied, "What about Abernathy and the other miners? It's my understanding that they are beyond hope and that they have been killed by the nanites so that their bodies could be colonized. Do you concur with that assessment Doctor Caskie?" "Sir, if I could interrupt, I would recommend a phaser set on overload. It should erradicate all the corpses, and we will be well away from the area by the time it explodes. We know there is another way in down the Beta team's tunnel, if we need to return." (reply Caskie) Ahmed nodded heavily. Chief Fuller, position yourself wherever you need to. Okay people, Double time, let's get off this planet. Move out." Ro' was pleased to see that Lt. Janeway was conscious though he still looked a bit fragile, still she considered that she was still in charge of the security until the FO told her otherwise, so she spoke up. "Commander, I must strongly object to you bringing up the rear, we have Security officers who are fully capable of doing so, you are the ship's First Officer and to important to the ship, the Captain and the crew to place yourself in more danger." (reply All on Away Team) (posted by Sal) --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Davros III Mining Colony - Mining Tunnels - Chief Field Medic SCPO Nathan A. Fuller - 1802) Commander Salid and the other Security Officer that wasn't on the stretcher, started Nate's way. ~They make 'em so young now... was I ever that young?~ Nate thought regarding the female security officer. "Chief Fuller, a word please?" asked the Commander. Nate quickly glanced at the readout on his tricorder, all Janeway's vitals were in the green. He could leave him for a moment. Nate stood and walked to where the XO was. "What can I do for you, Sir?" Nate asked cordially. Usually when senior bridge officers approached him, it was to either ask the status of his patients, what the duty limitations are, or when they can come back to duty. This, surprizing enough to Nate was none of the above. "About Janeway, can he be moved? I believe that we will be moving out very soon." he asked. His tone suggested to Nate that the Commander cared about his junior officer. Which in Starfleet wasn't uncommon, but all to often the senior officers focused on the bigger picture too much, insisting that hurting a few people is fine as long as the mission is accomplished. He was pleased that this XO broke the mold. "Yes he can be, he's going to feel like he can get up soon, because his blood pressure is returning to normal. However, we are going to have to keep him on the litter for a while longer, we can replace the fluids, but without the sick bay and the hemo-synthesizer, he won't have as many redblood cells as he needs to function normally. He could resume normal activity for a few minutes at most, but it would be more like working anaerobicly, and he would get really woozey pretty quick. He'd need to stay on the stretcher, except for emergencies, until we get him back up to the ship. One other liter bearer and we can bring him with us." Nate explained. "Excellent, recruit anyone you require to assist if need be. Be ready to move out in the next five minutes." he said and Nate went back to Janeway checking his vitals. Still green and getting better. In the next few he should be coming to a little more permanently, as his body produces a few more RBCs and adjusts to the lower oxygen content. Chance knew from experience as a privateer that she was correct, and let his thoughts be known when he said in with a calm that he did not feel “Sir, with all do respect; you really should be more toward the center of the group. Leaning back in her chair she stretched her arms, feeling stiff. Looking sympathetically at the Counsellor beside her, she said, "Go and get some rest, Olen. I've lost count how many hours you've been up. And yes," she added, holding up a hand to forestall his objections, "I know I have too. But if you grab a few hours now, I promise to do so later." She watched him leave and then ordered a raktajino for herself, and a ration bar which she knew contained a mild stimulant. As she ate it she smiled wryly, imagining what Josh would say to her later, if she found out. (USS Rosenante - Bridge - CO - Captain Susan Rivers - 1825) Having relieved the OIC and got a status report, Susan sat in the command chair and reviewed the reports from all the departments. She knew the away team were incommunicado whilst they were in the mines but she hoped to hear from them soon. In the meantime she had work to do, in relation to her extensive talks with SFHQ. Absorbed in her work as she seemed to be, anyone observing her closely would notice that her eyes kept straying between the comm channel, the viewscreen, and the chronometer. She was quite surprised when the new officer, Raschen backed her up, offering to bring up the rear with Janeway. Perhaps it would make her point more forceful, coming from a non-security officer. To her amazement Cdr. Salid conceded to her logic. Ro'Dal was rendered speechless and listened quietly to the conversation between the FO and Ensign Raschen. ”I understand sir that we have to fight to run away; and that anyone that falls behind gets left behind, sir. Where do you want me sir, bringing up the rear or on the flank?” The FO's reply was terse. "Mister Raschen, I believe that I already answered that question. Had you been listening, you would have caught it, but since you do not seem to have been focused, I think it better that you are positioned on the flank as I originally ordered." “Roger that sir.” Came Raschen's reply. The First Officer turned back to Ro'Dal. "Make whatever arrangements you need to dispose of these bodies and set up our escort." "Yes Sir." Ro' replied with a nod and turned away to speak with Hezan, telling him to set his hand phaser to overload once the party was out of the chamber, and then catch up to bring up the rear with Lt. Janeway. "Give us a 30 second lead." She told him. Hezan nodded and moved to where the nanite infested corpses were lying. Slinging his rifle over his shoulder he unholstered his hand phaser, then waited while Ro' moved to the chamber entrance they'd come in by. "Listen up everyone, now that the discussion is over about where I will be found in this formation, everyone adjust your phaser settings to vaporize. Check your fire and stay vigilant." The FO ordered and moved to the center of the formation. He turned to look at the assembled crew, raised one hand above his head and dropped it dramatically as he ordered, "Move out!" Ro' didn't have to be told twice, she flipped her rifle setting to vaporize, turned on her wrist torch and gave Hezan a nod before leading the way out of the chamber back into the darkened tunnels at a fairly brisk pace. Approximately two minutes later the ground shuddered beneath their feet as the phaser exploded, but by then she had led the party far enough away so that only a few small rocks pelted them from the tunnel ceiling. ~If that didn't finish them off, nothing short of a torpedo volley will.~ Ro' thought as she increased the pace a little more, anxious to get out into the fresh air again. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ( USS Rosenante - Main Engineering - Engineering Specialist - Crewman Carol Anderson -1825 ) " urrrgggghhh " grunted Carol , but she managed to stop short of smashing he fists in temper into the panel in front of her . --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Ready Room - Crewman Shadow to Sretalles - 1826) Shadow woke with a stretch from where she'd fallen asleep on the arm chair in the Captain's Ready room. She rubbed her eyes and looked around to notice the Captain and her counsellor had apparently left her there to go find their own beds. She stood and stretched and looked around again. There were PADDs to straighten, reports to finish and file and plenty of work for one yeoman who probably should have been prodded awake by her captain hours ago. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge - Crewman Shadow to Sretalles - 1827) Arms full of PADDs, Shadow came out on the bridge to find her Captain in the command chair, reviewing what was probably away team reports. Tail lashing Shadow walked down to the command chair and stared at her Captain until she was given leave to speak. (Reply Rivers/any) "You have not eaten. You have not drinken." Her standard was failing her a bit in her agitation. "How will crew morale be if you fall over on your nose?" (Reply Rivers/any) Shadow sniffed, not believing a word of it. She turned on her heel and stalked to the back of the bridge where she dumped her stack of PADDs on the auxiliary table monitor thingy and ordered up a pocket pizza and tea for her captain. She marched back down the bridge to hand it over and gave her Captain a look that said "I dare you not to ingest them!" Once she was satisfied her Captain was going to be sensible, Shadow went back to her pile of PADDs and picked them up and slipped into the turbolift. Really, some people could be very silly! It didn't even occur to Shadow the changes that had occurred to her since coming into Captain Rivers' service eight months before. She would never have dared to scold an officer, let alone a Captain in a public place. It had been almost impossible for her to even *talk* in public. Someone, possibly a certain holo-marine, had been a terrible influence. "Yes, Shadow?" Susan asked, a little curious as to why she was there. "You have not eaten. You have not drinken. How will crew morale be if you fall over on your nose?" Susan bit her lip. Shadow's concern was evident, and not to be laughed at. "I have had a raktajino and a protein bar," she offered. Shadow sniffed with obvious disbelief and stalked to the back of the bridge. Various sounds behind Susan indicated the use of the replicator and she wasn't too surprised when Shadow returned and presented her with some kind of small pizza and a cup of tea and a look that almost seemed to dare Susan to refuse them. "Thank you, Shadow," Susan said, choosing the easier option of eating and drinking rather than argue the toss with her yeoman in the middle of the Bridge. An argument she was not convinced of winning in any case. As she watched the young Siaovan depart, Susan smiled. She had really come on a long way from when she first came aboard the Champlain and wouldn't say boo to a goose, as it were. The pizza was as disgusting as it looked but it was warm and filling, and the tea was fragrant with bergamot and did have a stimulating effect. Susan made a mental note to thank Shadow later. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Davros III Mining Colony - Lawson Residence - Sec.O Ensign Ro'Dal - 1839) It felt like they had fought their way out of the depths of hell. The nanite hosts had pursued them almost all the way. Some had even attacked their flanks in an attempt to ambush them from the various dead end tunnels along the way. Poor Hezan had fallen victim to them, his bloodcurdling screams making every hair on her body stir, and he had been mercifully vaporized by the FO before Ro' had a chance to do it. She knew that if she had been infested, she'd have wanted to be terminated quickly, so she was prepared to do it. The exhausted party scrambled into the residence. Once they were all inside, the FO ordered her to assemble her team and make two lines to cover the shaft. With a whistle and a signal, Ro'Dal got her security team in position while the Commander hailed the ship. Ahmed tapped his commbadge. "Away team to Rosenante. We require immediate emergency beam-up for fourteen, one is not wearing a commbadge. Energize immediately." In the murky darkness of the shaft, Ro' caught a glimpse of movement. "Here they come!" She warned her team and began firing down the tunnel as the miners resolved into viable targets. (reply Rosenante) "To the rear." The FO called out and fired. Ro' spun around and saw another group of miners moving towards them. It looked like they were hemmed in. There was no escape except up. "You, you, you...Cover the rear." She ordered three of the security officers and continued to vaporize body after body, thankful she had brought several fresh power packs with her. ~Now would be a great time to transport us out of here!~ She thought, and felt the welcome tingle of the transporter beam get a hold on her. The away team had lost another dedicated security officer in the withdrawal and Ahmed had vaporized the officer himself rather than order anyone else to undertake the task. Now the away team, exhausted from an uphill run, fighting the entire way, spilled out into the Lawson residence. The thirteen personnel were breathing heavily, trying to such the air into their tired lungs. Behind them, there were wails as the infected miners made their way up the tunnel behind them. "Mister Ro'Dal. Give me two lines here, shoot at anything that comes up that shaft." Ahmed ordered. (reply Ro'Dal) Ahmed tapped his commbadge. "Away team to Rosenante. We require immediate emergency beam-up for fourteen, one is not wearing a commbadge. Energize immediately." Already Ro'Dal's security team were firing down the tunnel as the miners resolved into viable targets. (reply Rosenante) Ahmed raised his rifle as a smaller group of miners shuffled into view at the back of the small room, behind them. "To the rear." Ahmed called out and fired, disintegrating the closest miner. There position was untenable and Ahmed could almost smell the fetid odor of decay on their breath they were so close. He fired a second time vaporizing another miner. A third reached out for him, then the familiar tingle of the transporters whisked him away to safety. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante - Bridge - CO - Captain Susan Rivers - 1842) It was with immense relief that Susan heard Ahmed's voice over the comm. =/\=Away team to Rosenante. The ones that had phasers opened fire. As the security officers started returning fire from their positions, Chance started returning fire from his as well when he started feeling the tingle of the transporter beam grabbing him. He was hoping to find himself in the quarantine chamber, but was just as surprised as the security member with him was to find themselves still on the planet. As the shoot out re-commenced, Chance noticed that one of the Zombies was about to get the drop on his battle buddy. “Look out” Raschen yelled as he shoved the man to the ground as he turned and fired at the Zombie. Raschen vaporized the uniformed zombie as its phaser beam hit him in the chest, lifting him up off the ground and back over the un-injured security man. While Raschen was in the air about a half meter over his battle buddies body, lying on the ground, Chance felt the hold of the transporter beam again. This time they found themselves in the quarantine chamber on the Rosenante. When the transporter effect let go of them; the security man was face down on the floor and Chance, unceremoniously fell flat on his back onto the deck, with his legs drapped over the other man. Looking around and seeing everyone else there, Raschen stopped worrying about the fire fight and asked the other man on the floor “You alright, buddy?” as he noticed the smoke rising from his his chest from where the phaser shot burned a hole in his uniform. “Yea, I’m good; you?” As he opened up his uniform, revealing his energy-absorbing body armor, all Chance could say in reply was “Good God almighty; that hurt.” As he rubbed his chest and was thankful that he wasn’t injured in anyway except maybe his “pride”. --------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Rosenante- Medical Quarantine-Sec.O Ensign Ro'Dal 1844.5) As soon as she materialized in the quarantine section of Sickbay, Ro'Dal did a quick tally of bodies. ~Krat turds! We are not all here.~ A loud thud behind her had her spinning around to see what the noise was and then she let out a sigh of relief, the missing 'bodies' had just arrived in a rather undignified but amusing heap. The two men were lying on the floor. Raschen asked the other man, (one of her security team who was face down on the floor). “You alright, buddy?” “Yea, I’m good; you?” As he opened up his uniform, revealing his energy-absorbing body armor, all Ensign Raschen replied. “Good God almighty; that hurt.” As he rubbed his chest. Ro'Dal moved swiftly and helped them both to their feet. "Glad you dropped by." She said with a smile, then a chuckle and gave them both a hearty slap on the back. (reply Raschen iyw) "Report to your respective departments when you are cleared." The FO said as he was called forward to be scanned. Ro'Dal nodded though she didn't see the point as her boss was right there. What she really wanted was some sound sleep. Naturally the senior officers were scanned first while the rest of them waited for their turns. When the FO had hurried out, probably to report to the Captain, Ensign Raschen turned to Ro'Dal and asked: “Is it always like this, or am I just lucky on my first day here?” Ro'Dal looked at him, her face solemn and patted his arm. "Oh no!" She told him, "you are lucky!" She added, "you picked a quiet day to arrive!" The look on Raschen's face was priceless and Ro'Dal found herself guffawing with laughter that brought tears to her eyes, but it sure felt good to laugh. She suspected someone in power was trying to deliver a subtle hint. Tail twitching, whiskers being licked Shadow wasn't sure what she was supposed to do with the pile of PADDs in her arms. Chewing on her whiskers, she'd decided to retreat to her cabin and consider the matter. It wasn't as if she didn't have a terminal in her room. She just wished she had something to sit on. She'd asked at some point of the quartermaster to find her a stool so she wouldn't have tail interference. The chair had gone away, but nothing had ever appeared to replace it and she'd gotten distracted and never chased the matter. She had walked into her quarters to drop the PADDs in shock and glee. She'd run over to the window seat, where beside it, on the ground, sat a full sized harp of Earth style. Twitches in the grains, slight irregularity in the pegs, told her it was an instrument of handcrafting, not replicated. She sniffed the wood, not recognizing the scent, but tail twisting and looping in glee. She ran an experimental paw along the strings, heart dancing in delight at the pure sounds the instrument made. The next minute she was in the relative safety of the ship's medical quarantine. She used the word 'relative' cautiously since she was standing next to a ticking alien time bomb that could still kill everyone in the room if they didn't hurry up. The FO obviously thought exactly the same since before she could say anything he turned to her. "Get your people to clear us as quickly as possible. I need to speak with the Captain and you have very important work to do." Josh nodded. "Yes Sir." and hurried across to the communicator near the airlock. It was just like one of those wild west ghost towns that you read about in the history books. All it was missing was the tumble weed." "We located the residence of doctor Lawson and there we found what appeared to the remains of a lab. It was very obvious that some of the equipment had been moved elsewhere. From that lab there were two almost parallel tunnels leading downward toward the mine. As you know that was when I ordered Lieutenant Janeway, chief fuller and a second security team down to the planet. The idea was that the two teams could each explore one of the tunnels and possibly locate any survivors or clues faster." He picked up one of the pastries and took a bite. The orange marmalade was exceptionally good and Ahmed then realized how hungry he really was. He took a sip of his coffee to wash it down. "We searched for several hours without any sign at all of the miners. For a while there, I was even beginning to wonder if all 1500 of them had somehow managed to leave the planet. We came to a junction and heard what I could only describe as weapons fire. I ordered the team down the tunnel to the source as quickly as possible which opened into a cavern." "When we arrived, there was an… individual there, a member of the Opthidian species, who was defending himself from some of the miners. It was apparent that he had killed at least ten or twelve of them already. We announced ourselves and ordered the fighting to stop, but instead of being attacked by the visitor as I had originally expected to be, it was the miner's that attacked us." "Heavy stun doesn't have much affect on them. Even the kill setting isn't very effective. We lost Abernathy in that fight. He was infected by some sort of black ooze, which we were later informed was a nanite colony." "The Opthidian's name is Sharott Nachook and he explained a great deal to us concerning what was happening on that colony." Ahmed ate some more of his pastry and drank a little more of his coffee. "His people encountered the Borg roughly 500 standard years ago. Apparently their physiology doesn't allow them to be assimilated by Borg Technology. They fought a war and in the end the Borg left them alone. The Opthidian scientists had dissected several Borg drones during the war and had discovered a way to modify the Borg nanoprobes for their own medical uses. This continued for some time until eventually, the Borg Nanoprobes developed some sort of colony-like hive mind and became self-aware. They began to dominate living members of the Opthidian species against their will and when the realization struck, the Opthidian government tried to destroy the nanites." "The nanites adapted again in a very grotesque manner. They began killing their hosts and maintaining the bodies after death until they were no longer viable. The Opthidian homeworld had to be biologically sterilized to prevent them from spreading. From what I can gather eventually the Opthidians captured the original colony which they refer to as the matriarch and imprisoned it pending it's destruction." "Now here's where the details get a bit sketchy." Ahmed said then took another sip of his coffee. "At some point in the recent past, the Ferengi somehow managed to steal this imprisoned nanite colony and transport it here, where it is believed they sold it to Doctor Lawson. The good doctor is an expert on Borg nanotechnology and was living here with her young daughter, who was very ill with an incurable ailment according to Doctor Caskie" "We can surmise that Lawson conducted some experiments, maybe even infecting her daughter either with the knowledge that these nanites were self-aware or in ignorance. Regardless of what she knew, that seems the most logical means that this infection was spread. From there, the nanites took over members of the community exponentially until every member was a member of the colony." "Mister Nachook's people tracked the Ferengi here. They claim to have destroyed the Ferengi ship and admit to attacking Mister Raschen's ship in an attempt to maintain some semblance of quarantine. It seems that after their losses in the battle, they withdrew, possibly to conduct repairs when we arrived in the system." "They had dropped Nachook and perhaps a couple of others on the planet with the mission to find and destroy the nanite breeding pool, where apparently the matriarch lives. Mister Nachook claims that destroying her will result in the demise of all her immediate offspring as they are dependant on her for their cognitive abilities." Just shortly after all this data was given by Nachook, Jono shows up with what is left "of Beta team. He was injured and we gathered that they were surrounded and attacked by a large mass of infected miners. They lost Milano during their escape." "Nachook advised Caskie at that time that he carries some sort of viral weapon in his body that will wipe out the entire biosphere of the planet and make it uninhabitable for roughly 200 standard years. He is confident that the weapon will kill all the nanites present by depriving them of biological hosts and will kill anyone that should set foot there as well and prevent the nanites from managing to get off world." Ahmed finished his coffee and sat it on the table. "The catch is that Nachook was injured and some sort of biological process has started that will result in his death and the release of the virus in an uncertain amount of time. Doctor Caskie is confident that she can extract the virus, saving Nachook and that the virus can them be delivered to the planet via modified Photon torpedo, where it will destroy the biosphere and end the threat of it spreading from this planet." "We had to fight our way out of those tunnels. We lost Hezan there. I vaporized him myself." Ahmed looked into River's eyes, before continuing. "I've seen a lot of terrible things Captain, but I can not describe to you the sheer terror and fear that these things inspire. I am not a blood thirsty person, but these things need to be eradicated with all due prejudice." "That said it was my assessment, after my experience on the planet, that these nanites should be treated like a biological outbreak and should be eradicated before they place millions or even billions more at risk. I have ordered Caskie to proceed with her plan after she assured me that she could prevent it from spreading across the ship should there be a mishap. I believe that we have no recourse and that we should treat these nanites as we would Borg. There is no hope of negotiation and that any encounter will result in the supplantation of one species over the other at the complete eradication of the prior." "To carry through with this, I furthermore, recommend that we transport the nanite-filled hand back to the Sky of Tomorrow and that we undertake steps to destroy it and the freighter as well."
