She looked tired and her hair looked in need of a little pampering, it was hardly surprising though considering the last mission she had just been a part of, that mission had tested everyone to their limits and then to add insult to injury, it had thrust them five years forwards in time . These were surely strange days... Samantha pondered on that for a moment or two, bizarrely the notion made her smile, perhaps for the first time in the last few months... years... whatever. One could go crazy at this! Either way the truth of the matter was that she had just aged five years without any extra wrinkles! Wasn't that every woman's dream? ~Awesome~ Samantha opened her eyes wide and then tightened her facial muscles whilst biting down to assist in that task, then she allowed her muscles to relax and tilted her head to one side, smiling neutrally to herself as she did so. ~Hmm, not too bad I suppose~ Samantha turned away from the mirror and then moved towards her desk, the console upon it was active and awaiting voice confirmation for input. It had actually been initiated minutes beforehand but Samantha had been, shall we say 'sidetracked' by thoughts of her own advancing years, hence her facial muscle play and mirrored contortions beforehand. Taking her seat though she put aside all of that and concentrated on her report to Starfleet, the one that would attempt to explain this bloody mess! "Open confidential file Gunnell One, confirm voice print ID - Dr Samantha Gunnell, Chief mission scientist to project Oberon" [Voice print identification confirmed - opening file Gunnell One] Gunnell settled back into her chair and took a deep breath, then she began. "The Subspace river is nothing at all like we imagined, indeed it is not even 'What' we imagined it to be", she began, "it's core is composed of a highly evolved DNA based matrix giving it a..... sentience' of a kind, it is certainly aware to a degree and capable of satisfying the prerequisites of a lifeform - it responds to external stimuli, it reacts to attempts to manipulate it and it adapts to it's surroundings and protects itself from incursion", she added, her voice momentarily becoming a little hoarse and prompting a pause now as she stood and moved towards the replicator. "Iced tea", she commanded, and the replicator promptly performed it's usual particle based magic, ending in the required beverage appearing within it's reception port. Samantha took the cup and then returned to retake her seat, taking a sip of the contents before continuing on with her report. "The Borg, bless their metallic based cotton socks, succeeded in manipulating just one routine embedded within the rivers DNA matrix, namely, the part responsible for seeking out class M worlds for seeding by...... I believe, the Founders", said Gunnell, "indeed I have seen similar coding and RNA sequences much closer to home to support this hypothesis, our own DNA in fact!", she added. "It would appear that the Borg were interested in isolating this routine for one purpose and one purpose only.... to travel instantaneously to any point and any time" Samantha took another sip of her iced tea and then placed the cup onto the table whilst contemplating what she had just said. All of this was incredible to say the very least, but on this occasion the Borg had seemingly initiated something that had actually assisted the Federation in some way, it seemed that in their meddling they had stumbled upon a part of the very tool the founders had used to create life itself.... and the Federation had been using it as a means of travel, a simple highway conduit! Gunnell continued on... "The river we all know and are familiar with has undergone radical changes, not the least of which being it's sheer size following our five year jump forwards in time. Indeed, what began as a remnant tendril of something that was once much larger, has now re-established itself to it's prior state via execution of the isolated program contained within it's construct and subsequently executed by the Borg.... as a consequence to this, it would appear that our simple 'highway conduit' has now become a fully viable subspace network reaching into area's of space we have never before had access to, let alone contemplated exploring", said Gunnell. The rim of the cup again made contact with Gunnell's lips as she took another sip of her iced tea, then she pulled up the charts she had prepared earlier on the subspace extension's of their 'remnant', noting again as she did so it's vastness before commenting on it's current status for the benefit of the report. "The subspace field itself appears to be currently stable according to all tests presently available to me, it must be remembered though that we are dealing with an entity... and I use that term whilst fully aware of all meanings and ramifications, that may be contra to those tests", said the Doctor, "at this precise moment however, I must conclude that it is indeed stable and holding form" Gunnell then stood and walked towards one of the windows of the research block to look out of it, it was currently night and the stars were twinkling in the sky as she gazed into the inky blackness of it all. For a moment she attempted to visualize what had occured, seeing it all in her mind now as a huge web interconnecting with everything that they presently knew. Somewhere out there the Founders, those that were most likely to be responsible for the river's existence, had probably become aware that their tool had once again become active, how that would affect them all now though was a question that begged to be answered of course. Would the Founders return in a hostile capacity.... or would they simply retract the evolved river to source once again? Considering the reasons they had given life in the first place the former appeared unlikely, the latter however was indeed quite possible. Either way, the river... this super highway, did not belong to any of them. How would they even control access to it, how would they prevent other, possibly hostile races using it in order to gain access to Federation territory? The questions were many but for now, most would remain unanswered. Gunnell tore her attention away from the area of space available to her via her viewport and then returned to her desk to finalize her report. "Is the river still a safe means of travel? I cannot answer that right now, I have however ascertained that the river responds directly to the same resonant interference patterns seen when a vessel adjusts shield geometry for access to what we have always termed it's 'flight corridors', it is therefore feasable that access can be attained in the exact same manner, although I am at present recommending a complete abstainence from it's use by manned vessels until further notice - the safety of the river as a continuing means of travail are thus, still an issue", she added. Doctor Gunnell then leant forwards in her chair to insert a data cell into the terminal before her. "I am including with my report, all scientific data obtained so far pertaining to the entity we know as the river, the tests are ongoing of course, all results are being correllated and logged pending final analysis..... End report, append to existing. Copy's to be forwarded to Dr's Floyd and Betcheman, Admiral's Jopek, Gr'iann, Durant, Linden and Sevant" [Appending to existing file - forwarding to corespondents as requested] Gunnell slowly settled back into her chair and then drained the last of her iced tea from the cup in her hand before opening a channel to the Tan'Talus deep space array, the communication took a short while of course, but soon, a familiar face appeared upon her monitor. Gunnell smiled.... "Robert, it's been a while.... how are things out there?" He turned off the computer terminal in front of him. Chief Petty Officer Rock brought his fingers to his temples and began to rub. He had just finished with one of the most bizarre cases he had ever encountered in his starfleet career, in his life ever. Months ago or was it years ago he began an investigation of marine Rameriz's death. It was top priority, but unfortunatly it quickly got shuffled in the mix of the entire 52nd fleet being pushed ahead 5 years into the future. The weeks that it took for the 52nd fleet to arrive at Khitomer Jaret took every opportunity to follow the investigation, but time was of short supply with the security of the ship being one of its highest priority during that time. Jaret wanting justice for the marine, and the marines aboard the Spectre constantly reminding the CPO about the case, kept him on his feet and followed any leads that developed during the trip. He had the answer almost instantly to the murderer of Rameriz when he first investigated the crime scene, however the suspect that Jaret accused was the reason the case was the most bizarre in his life. A hologram, specifically, Rameriz's twin hologram had murdered the marine. There were, and still was an argument that a hologram could not commit a murder. However controversial the situation was , Jaret was the investigator in charge of the case and it was what he was going to report to the JAG department. He believed that he had taken all necessary steps in proving his theory and was able to back it up with hard evidence. He also knew that he had gone above and beyond his duty to dig into the case even deeper than necessary. He believed he worked harder on this case than any other because the Spectre marines were so attached to the case. Either way he was finished...for now. He would now leave it up to the lawyers to fight it out in the court room. After the dreaded and rare headache disappeared Jaret stood and decided to begin his R and R which was granted hours ago. (reply none, any) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre - Deck 6, Crew Quarters - CPO Jaret Rock - 12:30) For the first part of Jaret's vacation he was going to speak with his children. He was able to receive and send back a small sound byte to them once communication was open again on the Spectre. Unfortunately with the recent investigation of his he had not had the time to sit down and speak with them. He opened the computer monitor and patched the communication through. His kids saw their dad for the first time in 5 years. They of course were in their 20's, and because of the time jump they were now almost in their 30's. The kids began to cry as they looked into their fathers eyes again. "We missed you dad," the oldest, Philip, said. "I missed you too," Jaret responded. Seeing his kids cry in front of him made his voice chatter and his throat fell like it had something stuck in it. Even for a man in security that has served Starfleet for over 20 years and had seen some of the most gruesome and bizarre things in his life; a tear began to swell and it eventually fell out and flowed down his face. "I love you and will try to come home as soon as possible," Jaret wanted to say upfront and as fast as possible. He wanted his kids to know that he knew how hard this has been on them. "We love you too, and we hope to see you very soon," the youngest, Daniel, said but then he trailed off. Philip picked up where Daniel stopped, "There is some things we do need to talk about first..." Jaret could only think of the worst possible news that he was about to receive. Ever since communications were opened a month ago the Lt Cmdr had not received a single piece of mail from anyone. There were a few explanations that Calvin could think why he hadn't heard anything from anyone, but those thoughts were ones he didn't want to have. He had gone through all the channels he was privy to to learn any information he could on his parents or his past girlfriend. 5 years is a long time and he could understand that Elizabeth possibly could be married and with kids and it could be weird for her to contact Calvin even if she wanted to. Calvin knew he wanted to hear from her, but he wasn't able to find any kind of record of her either. As for his parents if was believable for them to have passed away, but the security officer hadn't found any funeral proceedings with his parents’ name attached. Of course his parents were scientist and could be gone on a science project and not be able to contact him or even not known that the 52nd fleet had mysteriously reappeared after 5 years. The Security Chief sat at his desk and opened his login screen to find a few messages waiting for him. A hope built up inside of him wanting one of the messages to be from his parents or someone that knew about his parents. Unfortunately his hopes were crushed again as the messages were just pending approval security issues that needed to be attended to. Calvin slowly but accurately went through the security messages as the comm channel on his computer came to life. He tapped a button and a security officer appeared on his screen. =/\=Chief Capps I am Chief of Security Floyyd on Starbase 24.=/\= Instinctively Calvin pulled the contact list of officers from Starbase 24 and the gentleman on his view screen was the same individual on his list. "Yes Chief how can I help you?" =/\=I wanted to personally contact you and to inform you of the current situation.=/\= The Starbase Chief continued on to the facts that had currently been populated during their very short investigation. He also informed Calvin that the Spectre Captain and First Officer had been notified. "I would like to come over to the Starbase and assist with the investigation of finding this mystery woman Chief." Calvin enjoyed always being informed and the only way to know all the time was being directly involved. =/\=I would appreciate any help Chief Capps, in fact I was hoping you would offer your help.=/\= "I will assemble a team and beam over to you as quickly as possible. Capps out." (reply any, none) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre - Deck 10 - ATAC/ASC, Ensign Barac Storm - 06:47) Barac had gotten a PADD with the Spectre's deck plan when he got his orders to report. He had spent a great deal of his time studying those plans on his way Starbase 24 to join the ship, so it was with a certain amount of confidence that he strode toward the Security Chief's office. He behaved and looked like he belonged where he was and few people looked at him twice. At the Lieutenant Commander's door Barac stopped and knocked twice, then waited patiently. (reply Commander Capps) Upon hearing acknowledgement, Barac entered and came to attention, saluted then presented his orders to report here. "Ensign Barac Storm reporting as ordered Sir." (Reply Commander Capps) (Reply Commander Capps) (Posted by Raymond Dyer) (USS Spectre - Security Chiefs Office - TAC/SC Lt Cmdr Calvin Capps - 06:50) Calvin closed his comm panel and began to think of which security team he would like to take with him over to Starbase 24. Immediately after his screen went black and the UFP symbol appeared he heard a knock on his door. It seemed it would be a chaotic day for the Chief. “Enter,” Calvin responded to the call. The doors slid open and an Ensign walked through the door. "Ensign Barac Storm reporting as ordered Sir." “At ease Ensign Storm,” Calvin stood up from his chair and grabbed the PADD in the Ensign’s hand. He opened the file and placed his security code in the password panel. The orders were confirmed. Calvin knew of the arrival of Ensign Storm; he was told about some new personnel last night, but he didn’t think the first one would arrive so early. It was a bit unusual, but help was needed and Ensign Storm could certainly be used. Calvin walked around his desk and began to walk out of the office. “Ensign Storm, please follow me,” the Security Chief said in a hurry. (respond Storm) The two officers walked down the corridor making their way to the transporter room. “Ensign, we are en route to Starbase 24. One of our security officers was attacked this morning and he had to defend himself. (respond Storm) The two arrived at the transporter room and entered. Calvin immediately stepped on to the pad and gestured to Ensign Storm to join him. “Our job is to assist Starbase 24 with the search. It is imperative that we find her.” (reply Storm) “Energize,” the Security Chief ordered to the operator behind the transporter console. The two officers walked down the corridor making their way to the transporter room. “Ensign, we are on route to Starbase 24. One of our security officers was attacked this morning and he had to defend himself. Our officer is in the medical facility on Starbase 24.” "Do we know his assailant?" It seemed an attack on a serving Starfleet Officer was not as far fetched an idea as Barac would have thought. "The person that attacked him is a rouge female that was able to escape Starbase 24 security’s custody,” Calvin continued to update the Ensign. Barac was wondering why we were going to the starbase if the criminal wasn't there anymore. Seemed to him they should be going where ever this woman had gone. Not having much to go on he decided the better part of valor was to just follow and listen for now. The two arrived at the transporter room and entered. Calvin immediately stepped on to the pad and gestured to Ensign Storm to join him. “Our job is to assist Starbase 24 with the search. He hated being transported but it was not a good time to be squeamish. “Energize,” the Security Chief ordered to the operator behind the transporter console. He began his request to start at 0610 hours from that door to locate, and he loaded the picture of the suspect, this woman and follow her movements through the Starbase. He asked for any ships leaving the Starbase starting from 0620 this morning with their course and destination. Chief Capps and Floyyd watched as the Ensign moved over to the console. "Colonel Vera if you would be so kind as to provide me with a list of the empty passenger cabins and perhaps an escort to guide me to them it would speed things along. It is not our intention to hold you up any longer then is absolutely necessary. Barac felt having a crewmen along would also remove any possible allegations of an illegal search. Colonel Vera frowned but saw the value of speeding the search, "Pursuer Landon, please show the Ensign all unassigned passenger quarters, and wherever else he might want to go." The Colonel looked at Barac with a scowl, "Anything else?" Barac smiled, "Thank you Colonel that will be sufficient." Barac turned to the Pursuer "Lead the way Mr. Landon, the sooner we start the sooner we finish." Calvin turned and made his way to deck 4 to crew quarters. He ordered a drink and then waited for it to come. In his hand, he held a PADD, filled with messages from his relations. It was so weird to him, having experienced only a short amount of time, while they had experienced 5 years. His sister was married now. And he had a nephew. His brothers wanted to get together, not making it seem like they missed him, but he knew that was what they were saying. He wondered what it would be like to see them again. A waiter came with his drink. He looked down into the mug as it was set down. Aldlar realized that he felt... Lost. Everywhere he had belonged was changed by 5 years, and he had no clue what it was like. A brooding silence fell over him as he thought of the changes. The gentleman that had just entered the bar though seemed an unusual fellow, he looked a little awkward himself, indeed the expression upon his face could be best described right now as 'pensive', or perhaps 'introspective', either way Happy was intrigued and if for no other reason than to escape the Ferengi's incessant preamble, she knew she had to find out which of the sentiments could be best ascribed there.... and anyway, it would also satisfy her somewhat unusual need to make everyone else more like herself, ie Happy! Well, except for the odious Ferengi of course.... Morrisey, the waiter employed in O'Malleys had already taken the mans order and then taken the drink to him of course, the Starfleet officer had taken little notice of him other than to say thanks and had then simply stared into the contents as though light years away. Happy raised an eyebrow, drew herself a starburst, one of the few perks of the job and then idled on over to the gentleman in question. He greeted himself to 14 different crew members, told the same story 14 times and received the same negative response 14 times. He was beginning to become frustrated, but he knew that a search of this magnitude was tedious and time consuming. The problem with the plan was that time was an issue. The starbase couldn't hold every ship forever. Protocols would need to be followed and those protocols would eventually limit the power the starbase had over the ships docked. The Lt Cmdr pondered briefly if there was a way to limit which ships to search, but nothing came to mind before he made it to the next door. He pushed in the chime button and waited for a response. Seconds later a female Bajoran welcomed the Security Chief at the door. For the 15th time Calvin explained the situation in less than a minute and showed the picture to the crew member. Another negative response followed the explanation. He thanked the Bajoran woman and made his way to the next door. But this was not the time or situation, worse for himself and Beckett they had started this fiasco and surely they were going to pay for it. ~He spiked me the git~ Teverine kept his anger in check taking a long sidelong glance at Beckett with nothing but vengeance in his mind. ~I never punched him hard enough… Well something to be rectified soon enough~ He had gone through a whole miryad of feelings from guilt to self-defence of Beckett from loathing to anger to utter discontent. He did not know his future in Starfleet but surely felt most of the blame lay with his peacock dressed counterpart who was sheepishly grinning at the female security guard occasionally winking none to subtlety at her next to him. “These officers would require at least an inspection.”, said Williams, in defence of his officers. Teverine snapped out of his own world of misery as William’s pointed toward the two men. He had been aware of the conversation on some base level as they spoke about the situation but after the holo-camera had played his misfortune he no longer really paid attention to the scene at hand. ~My life is over and all because this Purple and gold pillock next to me, thought it would be funny to spike my drink. ~ As he looked on he still could not meet the eye of Deston his immediate superior and felt the heat on the back of his neck as he almost felt Deston’s eyes bore into his soul. Teverine was disgusted with himself and his actions. His ranging emotions had now swung back to utter loss and despair. “I’m sorry sir.” Turning to Deston Teverine still looked to the floor as he apologised for his actions that had brought him here from his R&R. (Reply Deston) Teverine looked up as a new arrival entered the room as the force field deactivated. The medical Brigg was small with only room for two beds; the obligatory medical equipment was arranged throughout the walls and on trays neatly laid out next to the beds. This was obviously a room used for only the mildest of cases, the occasional broken arm or fractured skull, with a much larger Medical facility available on a different floor. Security force fields where in place throughout the room separating the beds and door. “I am Chief Security Officer Floyyd. You two are released with no charges.” Pointing at Teverine and Beckett he moved towards Isengard. Teverine stood in mild shock. He knew more repurcussions where to follow but what now. He stood sheepishly as he watched Floyyd talk to Williams. Teverine turned to Beckett who was grinning gormlessly as he always did as he tried to siddle closer to the female guard. Floyyd turned his attention quickly back to the two ensigns. “You two are to leave my station immediately and you are both barred from setting foot back on Starbase 24 for the duration of this visit. His head ached like hell. It didn’t help that someone was leaning over him, almost immediately, with a light… an action that immediately caused Walker to panic. He tried to lash out, but found himself blocked. “Doctor, he’s trying to use his telepathic center!” a female voice called out. “At ease Lieutenant.” The doctor said, backing off slightly. “We’ve filled you to the brim with neural-inhibiters. You won’t be using your telepathy for at least another hour – longer, if you force us.” Walker opened his eyes as a hypo was applied to his leg, which he found was strapped to the table. A sense of calm began to flow through him, leading him to the conclusion that he’d just been given a sedative. ~Stop, think. Think.~ he thought to himself as he looked around. He was in a secure facility, in an infirmary. What was he doing here? (Reply Williams, Any) The First Officer, the assigned security and the medical team tasked with Isengard's immediate care then left the room as requested, leaving the Captain alone with the Lieutenant. (Reply Isengard) (Posted by Alan) (Starbase 24 – Secure Medical Facility – TAC/ASC Walker Isengard - 08:03) Walker watched with dark amusement as everyone left the room. He was probably in for it now - but he expected no less. After what had happened, he fully expected to be court-martialed. One didn't stand toe-to-toe with security and expect anything less. Once they were gone, Walker crossed his arms. "Time for an explanation, I suspect." (reply: if desired, with room for conversation) The Security officer laid his still-aching head down on the pillow and considered for long moments what he was going to say. He also took another probe at his memory, but it was in pieces... as it had been since he'd woken up. If would probably take a lot of time to get any of his memory back, if it ever DID come back. "So, what did I do and why... isn't that the question?" he asked, rhetorically. "I don't get my kicks off invading other people's minds, Captain. I opened early, I've spent my life trying to keep people -out-. Furthermore, though I have a temper, a gojoan light stick will go out before a mere bit of rage will make me lash out and try whole-heartedly to break into someone's mind. I can't think of a single thing that someone would tell me that would make me drop everything and go on the offensive- not outside of an emergency situation, anyway." He paused for a moment, then continued with, "Understand, Captain, I look at life with a certain blithe amusement. I think the universe has generally gone to hell, and I rather enjoy watching people try to get one-upped on everyone else... including me. Things that would throw the average man into a rage generally make me laugh out of pure amusement. Which is also the reason I'm in security, and enjoy my job so much. I can stop the more obvious idiots, and I can appreciate the irony of those who get passed me. Which isn't to say I'm a psychopath, it means I do what I can to stop the flow of evil, and don't take on my shoulders the burden of those evils I can't best. anyway... " Probably not the best thing to admit to his Captain in a secure holding facility, but hey, anyone who could read between the lines of his psych profile could probably fathom as much. Walker closed his eyes tightly against the pain in his head, which was starting to come back, and frankly considered the Captain for a moment. He knew he was being recorded, it didn't matter. "Ninety nine times out of one hundred, if I say 'I am going to read your mind', there is absolutely nothing the target can do to stop me. I'm the mental equivalent of a juggernaut, and only a small group of people I know can best me... not including the random strong one out of other races, that does happen occasionally. I'm combat trained, I've got years worth of experience to draw from. That one time out of one hundred, assuming the target is not esper-blind, simply means I have to take more time: nobody has yet managed to stop me cold in my lifetime. However, that also means that the person I'm scanning is very good at blocking access to their mind. Captain, that woman- whoever she is- was the single best blocker I've ever had the misfortune to come against." He moved his head stiffly, "She was also a passing good combat telepath in her own right. While I was scanning her, I was mind-blasted, and that blast has scattered my short-term memory all to hell. I've got bits and pieces, I remember everything last night clearly, I remember everything after she was stunned and the attack stopped just as clearly... all five seconds of it before I was stunned. It's what happened before and during the attack that is all a jumble. I've spent every waking moment trying to work it out in my head - trying to remember what convinced me in a moment that a shields-down full attack on her mind was not only justified, but completely necessary." He snorted to himself, "That's one thing I still remember, a driving need to find out what she was about, it is really rather important- or was." The security guard fell silent again. It was strangely ironic that he'd be in this situation after the conversation they'd had on his arrival on the Spectre, how he swore he wasn't a threat. This was going to test that belief, and probably snap it. ~In for a pound.~ "I have force-scanned perhaps a dozen individuals in my life outside of battle. Each time was a matter of life-or-death. I don't know what happened, exactly, beyond snatches. Every time I try to think of those moments, before I put my hands on her throat, only two words come clearly to mind - the words 'Old Guard.'" Walker scratched his chin. “If they are who I remember them to be, I'm not important enough to seek out - especially not after five years of objective time." Walker smiled darkly, "I can't think of a good reason I'd be contacted, which was probably the point of scrambling my short-term... and giving me a damned good headache in the process. Among whatever other damage she did." He smiled larger, "But, of course, there's always the possibility that the thought was planted, too. What better way to confuse the hell out of an investigation then a mind-blast and a few words that would lead down an old war road? Hell, maybe I impregnated someone's daughter back on Earth and the father is getting back at me... heh." (reply: CO, any) (posted by Trout) (Starbase 24 – Secure Medical Facility – CO, Captain T'Vhor - 08:04) Once everyone had left the room, Isengard folded his arms across himself and looked to the Captain, his expression one of quiet resignation. "Time for an explanation, I suspect", he said, adding the 'I suspect' as though it may not have been such an obvious an option as it may have first seemed. The Captain nodded and then took a seat nearby, expecting the Lieutenant to go into some detail now. "Indeed, a blow by blow account is not necessarily required so long as the important aspects of the pertinent events are relayed in their entirety", said the Captain. Isengard layed himself back onto the biobed and remained silent for a moment or two, apparently contemplating those events... then he began. "So what did I do, and why... isn't that the question?", he began, then without waiting for an answer, thus indicating that the question was purely rhetorical, he continued on with an account of how he had always had to shut people out of his mind and as a consequence of that, his temper was perhaps not what it should be. Indeed it would seem that by his own admission, it positively flew into uncontrolled rage at times. The Captain listened intently throughout Isengards descriptive narrative, becoming clear that the man was bordering upon misanthropy at times, clearly he did not like people in general and one had to wonder how he managed to exist in an environment that placed him constantly in their company. Needless to say, the mans mental state right now was not the issue here and before long, the real facts eventually began to surface from the mans own self analysis. The mystery woman had been just that it would seem, a mystery... even to Isengard! "...that woman - whoever she is - was the single best blocker I've ever had the misfortune to come against", he had said, the expression upon his face betraying a certain admiration for that, clearly it was not something he was used to at all. Then he mentioned the 'Old guard', his hand reaching up to scratch at his chin at the very mention of them. The Captain raised an eyebrow in typical Vulcan fashion, the Old guard conjured up many things in his mind, not the least of which were the old guard of Vulcan, those stalwarts of old tasked with the protection of the high command. Irrespective of this, the mention of the old guard had upped the ante somewhat, Isengard himself seemed to have no idea why they would be interested in him now but in the Captain's mind, he could not dismiss the possibility of a Doenitz loyal faction playing it's hand now in the light of the upheaval and instability within the fifty second fleet, caused by the recent five year jump in time. The Lieutenant lay there in his increasing uncertainty, then he added, with a certain degree of humour now... "Hell, maybe I impregnated someone's daughter back on Earth and the father is getting back at me.." The Captain raised an eyebrow once again at the notion. "It would be illogical to have gone to so much trouble to achieve such an extraneous outcome", he said, then he quickly returned to the core element of the very reason they were both talking alone now. "Lieutenant Isengard, in your dealings with both Starfleet and your current security assignments... is it not possible that our mystery woman may be a highly trained agent of a group intent on exploiting what has recently happened to the 52nd fleet?", he asked. He was only an Ensign and had not yet been on shift in the presence of his commanding officer. This was not the way had intended to be introduced. Teverine stood to attention as the Captain appeared, now he knew he was going to be sick. His counterpart Quinn snapped to attention next to him as the stern faced Captain looked at them briefly. This was not he assumed how the captain liked to be woken up in the morning. "Gentlemen", said the Captain with a gesture of his hand towards the door of a nearby room as he stopped, "Come with me please" Neither man replied as they walked liked the condemned to the swinging noose. Teverine could feel his heart racing like a thoroughbred as he walked into the Medical Annex. He watched as his Captain walked behind the desk and sat, his glare made Teverine feel uncomfortable, his grandfather used to give him the same look when he had misbehaved and he now felt like that naughty little boy again in this man’s presence. He almost felt the walls closing in on him as the doors shut, like the clinking of his prison cell door. "Who wishes to begin?" ~Oh this could not get any worse~ Teverine coughed gently fidgeting in his seat hoping Quinn would do the right thing and admit his part in this fiasco, looking over to his off and on friend he inwardly sighed, he did like him and almost simultaneously wanted to defend his friend’s actions and take the blame. ~If I can save one of us from the chop I’ll do it. ~ “It was my fault Sir I drank too much, this had nothing to do with Ensign Beckett, in my inebriated state I got carried away on the dance floor and accidently used my ability with more force than I had expected resulting in me err…” Teverine scratched his head and almost appeared to be sitting on pins as he shifted around his seat. He had begun sweating and now he could feel his top lip moist with the brought on fear. He could almost taste his impending doom. “Blew myself across the room Sir.” Teverine blurted out bowing his head in shame and humiliation. His actions where so unlike him, the one time he let his hair down and this was the result, he felt he secretly knew what Quinn was up to the whole time, the size of the drink and the taste was a dead giveaway, subconsciously he wanted to be drunk, he wanted to be a different person, he wanted a second chance and this was not what he had intended as the result into the foray. Quinn stood up his arms folded behind his back; he had never looked so serious. Teverine firstly felt relief and then pride as Quinn explained the whole nights proceedings telling the entire truth, taking the full blame for spiking Teverine and the forthcoming events of the previous night. ~I knew he would come good~ Teverine thought guiltily, as he suppressed a smile at his friends courageous actions. Even though he did mention the holo video, something he knew would surely appear again in his life if Beckett had anything to do with it, he knew that video was pure gold to a prankster like him. (Reply Captain T'Vhor) (Posted Peter Richards) (Starbase 24 - Promenade - Cprl, Lewis O'Hara - 12:55) It wasn't often that you saw a pirate walking through the corridors of a starbase, indeed it was pretty unheard of these days and yet, the bemused gazes of the onlookers scattered about the promenade bore testament to the fact that one was now amongst them! His heavy footfalls accompanied the jangling of the ornate gold buckles upon the leather boots that he wore, their tops folded down to expose sturdy thighs dressed in dark trousers which in turn were held up by a thick leather belt. Upon that belt hung an ornate flintlock pistol and a sabre, and rising from them the well muscled partly exposed torso of the pirate himself, dirtied and scarred. Immediately he stopped in his tracks as a young Bajoran boy suddenly appeared before him, then he looked down into his eyes, the point of his tri-corner hat lowering as he did so and his matted beard coming into contact with his chest to splay out upon it. "What species are you?", asked the boy, uncertain now as to the 'gentleman's' outward appearance. The Pirate scowled and then took a deep breath, his hand moving towards the handle of his sabre as he did so. The boy took a step back and the pirate raised his head in order to maintain eye contact with him. "Human", he responded, "the Espanol, my ship is berthed on the furthest quay, the high rigger.... with the black and white flag flying from it's topmost mast", he added, pointing now through the viewport of the station itself. The boy looked nervously, and then frowned. "I see no ship", he said, confused at the Pirates words. The Pirate took another deep breath and then casually brushed the boy aside with one hand. "Land lubber, out of my way... I have treasures to plunder and souls to take", he growled and then headed off towards one of the corridors that led off of the main promenade. His destination - Leprechaun O' Malley's Irish Pub! An unlikely destination indeed one would imagine. The pirate paused briefly outside the bar and then drew a small device from his pocket, he then twisted the strands of his beard together and 'lit' them with the device until they were all aflame and smoking nicely. Then he entered with a shout. "Ah Aaah!, shivver me timbers, scurvy dogs step aside and prepare to be boarded.... lay down your arms, your treasures and..... your women!", he cried as the entire patronage of the bar fell silent and turned towards the newcomer, who by now had drawn his flintlock and sabre from their respective holders attached to his belt to hold them high. Their expressions were one of mild amusement, the Pirates however had suddenly turned from one of decadent marvel to one of utter confusion, the sabre and pistol slowly lowered as he stood there in silence, clearly bemused now at what he was seeing. ~Rameriz?~ The name hung in his mind, but of course this could have nothing to do with him, being dead was as good an alibi as any after all. Even so though, this stank of one of the Spaniards distasteful jokes and O'Hara inwardly cursed the man despite his demise three weeks, or was it five years beforehand... Who could tell right now anyway? Clearly he had been set up, an hour beforehand he had received word of the fancy dress party on SB24 and had fully expected to arrive in the stated location of Leprechaun O' Malley's Irish Pub to find a multitude of revellers garbed in whatever fantastical outfits their minds may have conjured up. As it was, almost everyone was wearing starfleet uniform, and those that weren't were dressed in casual attire! O'Hara exhaled heavily as the realisation that he had been duped finally set in.... someone was going to die! (Reply Any) (Posted by Alan) (Starbase 24 - Promenade - Major Bruce Kowalski and Corporal Lewis O'Hara - 13:05) Kowalski turned to his CO and smiled a cursory smile. "My wife is due to dock tomorrow sir, I must say that I will be more than glad to see her again", he said in response to the Chameloid's question over whether he had family coming aboard to meet him or not. Krige simply nodded at the answer. "How about you sir, do you have family meeting you?", asked Kowalski a little further on. (Reply Krige IYW) To be honest, the MXO was a tad unsure as to what a Chameloid family would even be like, indeed the entire concept seemed somewhat confusing to him. How did they know who was who, did they just agree to always maintain their true appearance so as not to confuse? Did they even engage in close relationships even? It was at about that time though that the query in regards Chameloid heritage and familial dealings simply dissipated from the MXO's mind as the image of a pirate, complete with cutlass and tricornered hat came striding through the deck towards them looking rather peeved to say the very least. At first it did not register that O'Hara was actually beneath the seafairing, bucaneer garb and if it hadn't been for the fact that he was muttering to himself as he passed them by, they would not have known at all. Kowalski simply stopped in his tracks and turned about, as did the MCO. "Corporal?", he enquired, at which the pirate came to a sudden halt, turning on the spot and immediately saluting as he did so. "Sir, sorry sir..... I was, preoccupied sir", said O'Hara awkwardly. "Preoccupied soldier?, I do not recognize that uniform Mr O'Hara.... and judging by the speed you were moving I would imagine that your ship is about to weigh anchor, no?", he added. "No sir, a minor discrepancy...... it seems that I have been duped sir, led to believe that there was a fancy dress party on the station", said O'Hara. "A fancy dress party you say?", said a surprised MXO. "Yes sir, I got the word less than two hours ago, thought a pirate might go down well", said O'Hara. Kowalski nodded and sighed heavily at the Corporal's explanation, it was not uncommon for Marine high jinx to break out of course, whether on duty or otherwise, the MXO had a mind to investigate this further but then in retrospect, he decided against it. The Marines, and indeed everyone else had just completed a difficult tour of duty, what did it matter if they had a bit of fun, even if it had been at O'Hara's expense! "I see", said Kowalski, "run along then Corporal.... and be quick about it lest you wish to risk a keel hauling or a long walk off a short plank" The Marine appeared to slump beneath his tri-corner hat and then saluted again before answering with a quick "Sir, yes sir, running along quick", and then he was gone. Kowalski shook his head in disbelief and then turned to the MCO, shrugging his shoulders as he did so. "Well, that's not something you see every day sir", he said as they then both continued on their way. (Reply Krige IYW, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Starbase 24 – Tolqu’s Quarters – ACSO Ensign Teverine Tolqu – 22:08) Teverine sat back on his chair with his hands folded in front of him leaning on his chin, he went over the days events in his mind for at least the hundredth time.. He felt lucky to still be on board the ship in many respects, but dreaded seeing any other member of the crew for fear of their smirks and gossip over the coming weeks and months. ~What the hell was I thinking I should of known Quinn would of done something like this~ He had decided early on after his talking to with the captain that it would be better for a while to remain away from Quinn. In fact he felt like he wanted to hibernate in his room for the next 5 years. “Well Teverine you have done it this time” He muttered to himself as he pushed himself up off the chair and moved towards the replicator. “Ornaran Tea, milky with one teaspoon of honey” He listened to the computer chirp away as his drink materialized. Ornaran tea was very similar to the earth Indian recipe Chai, a tea infused with aromatic herbs which he had discovered back at the academy. Picking up the tea gingerly he sipped at it, feeling his tongue burn against the hot liquid he ignored it and returned to the chair which he had occupied for most of the day after the fiasco of the mornings preceedings. ~Just keep your head down mate and people will eventually forget~ He visibly winced at his actions over and over again as he remembered the holo video showing himself drunk, blasting himself across the room with his own ability. He knew the shame would be a burden for a while before he could look back and laugh if ever. Teverine looked over at the box by his bed and slowly rose again to retrieve it from it’s place on the table where it stood since he had arrived on board. Slowly he lifted the box as he leaned over and took another tentative sip of his drink. Taking out the picture he looked at his estranged wife and frowned. Had he done the right thing walking out on her? ~She was a drug addict she was my wife. I should have been there for her~ He nodded in disagreement with himself, he had been there before and she had always promised this would be the last time; it was always the last time. He remembered coming home from work and finding her laying on the bed, her heart was barely beating she was cold to the touch. He shivered as he recalled shaking her in tears begging her not to die on him again. She wore a small blue dress; her hair was knotted and matted with debris from where it looked like she had crawled through the mud, probably unable to stand in her state. He remembered the stains covering the front, of her clothing. Even at the time he looked at the stains and the dishevelled hair of his wife and felt partly revolted then. Thinking back that was the breaking point and the defining moment when he knew he had to leave this downward spiral of a relationship before he lost everything to Felcium, he had already lost his wife. This was not the out of the normal for him. Previously he had come home to find her in these states. He remembered the shame of the way the doctors and paramedics looked at him. Felcium was a horrid past for nearly all Ornarans but there was a few like his wife Perra who persisted with this foul addiction. He had tried to help her stop countless times and still she always reverted back to taking the drug. The door chimed breaking Teverine out of his thoughts. Looking up he sighed. “Enter.” (Reply ANY) (Posted by Peter Richards) =========================================================================
