He sat at his desk looking over the engineering roster. He wanted to
learn the names of his "guys" before heading down to engineering. As
he finished looking at the last name on the roster, he looked up at
his room. He had unpacked, but it still felt empty. Every time he
moved into a new room on a Starship it felt empty. He looked at the
picture on his desk, it was of him and a beautiful red headed young
woman. She was in science teal, he was in command red. He had an
ensign pip on his collar, she had Lieutenant Junior Grade pips on
hers. The last photo they took together. The reason why every new room
felt empty.

Her name was Myka Marie Moore, or as she was known on the day of her
"death" Myka Williams, his late wife. She was two years older than
him. He had originally met her at the Academy when he was a Freshman
and she a Junior. Though she admitted she found him odd. They had a
mutual friend in common. He always found her cute, she found him
charming. When she graduated they stayed in touch and when he
graduated they were both assigned to the Pioneer at the same time.
They arrived on Stardate 2405.06.01, she as a brand new Lieutenant
Junior Grade and as Chief Science Officer, and he as a newly minted
Ensign Junior Grade and an engineering officer. Though after a month,
when the chief conning officer was transferred to a different ship,
Duke was promoted to Ensign Senior Grade and took his spot.

So there he was a brand new Ensign SG and part of the senior staff,
celebrating in the officers lounge. Full of confidence he asked her
out. His mind thinking it was serendipitous they were both stationed
together after being apart for two years. By the end of the year on
Stardate 2405.12.01 they decided to get married, and ten days later
were married on Stardate 2405.12.11.

The Pioneer as a good ship. She was an older ship, and Oberth class
science vessel. She was the third of her name, NCC 1500-B. The
original Pioneer was a Pioneer class frigate that was destroyed with
all hands on Stardate 2260.02.29, a leap year. The original Pioneer
held off a group of Orion pirates allowing 4 Tellarite frieghters to
escape. The second Pioneer, NCC 1500-A was a Miranda Class starship,
commissioned in 2271. She was decommissioned on 2287 after taking
heavy damage following a misunderstanding with a rogue Klingon attack
squadron. The last Pioneer was the NCC 1500-B, commissioned in 2290
and lasted in service for over 100 years, with retrofits every 25
years or so. She was decommissioned after receiving heavy damage on
her last mission, an encounter with the Borg.

Stardate 2406.12.11. his and Myka's first anniversary. They were
running a routine check of a gaseous anomaly in the Beta quadrant. in
the Hotep sector. They were one of 10 federation ships in the Sector,
the nearest starbase being a day away at warp 9. It happened out of
nowhere, a Borg Sphere emerged from nowhere. The Pioneer was no match.
They sent out an SOS on all channels. The closest ship was 4 hours
away. They tried to escape and led the Sphere on a game of cat and
mouse for as long as they could, before being caught in a tractor beam
and boarded. The captain was taken, along with the chief engineer, and
operations chief. Assimilated before their very eyes. The Borg beamed
back to the Sphere and left the Pioneer ensared, a trap for the other
ships. The first officer ordered an away team composed of Duke, Myka,
and 3 security officers to beam over to the Sphere and try and cut
them free. Their mission was strictly to free the Pioneer, not a
rescue mission. They managed to stay hidden long enough to find a
console that Duke tried to hack. Before he could free them they were
found. The first to fall were two of the security detail.. Myka then
tried to hold them off with her phaser to give Duke time, and he
succeeded, the Pioneer was free. Unfortunately, Myka had been
assimilated in the process. The remaining security officer grabbed him
and beamed them off ship. Duke, in shock in tears, kept yelling that
he needed to go back, needed to save Myka. He thought he still could.
At that moment the reinforcements arrived, 2 Sovereign Class ships, 2
Prometheus Class, and Cochrane Class. They made quick work of the
Sphere, but the Pioneer was damaged beyond repair in the process. The
Sphere was destroyed, Myka was gone.

The Pioneer was towed to spacedock and a few days later he was
promoted and assigned as the Ops chief on one of the Defiant Class
ships, the USS Red River. Still he was sunk. It was shortly after that
the Federation Civil War started, and somehow through what he faced
during the war he emerged stronger, the memory of Myka having helped
him avoid a telepathic interrogation from a member of the Doenitz
side.

Now 8 years later, he was doing better. He was more himself, back to
the quirky, eccentric engineer Myka had fallen in love with. He no
longer wore his wedding band, instead had the ring melted and joined
with other metal to be formed into a pendant of a dragon, her favorite
mythological beast, that he wore around his neck in memory of her.

Still his heart missed her, and every new room reminded him that it
was a room that they never got a chance to share. Still there was one
consolation. The sphere had been destroyed, which meant she hopefully
was not living life as a Drone. Hopefully.

Darpeg with 2 security guards were stationed outside of the battle bridge behind a section of replacement bulkhead that he had requisitioned as both a shield and a place to hide in ambush for when the pirates would come.  A few meters away, four marines were covering the intersection and the unbillical access hatch.  Eceryone had their phaser rifles pointed in the expected direction that the intruders would come.

CPO Ayers spoke, "When do you think they'll attack?"

Darpeg then heard a noise coming from the ceiling above them, about halfway between them and the marines.  He raised a hand and motioned for quiet.  He wanted to identify the noise.  A pice then slid aside, man jumped down to the deck, firing at the marines, felling two of them, while the others swiveled around and started firing.

Darpeg then tapped his commbadge and said, "Intruder alert!  Deck Twelve.  Two marines down!  Pirates in ceiling crawl spaces!"  Turning to the guards with him, he said, "Fire!"
