She had pinned her long, fine golden hair into a low bun and she touched the kapp that she normally wore over her hair for modesty sake. Her bright green eyes were a legacy from her Romulan parent, as were the slightly pointed ears which her kapp covered. Looking at her most people thought that she was half Vulcan, not a Romulan and for that she was grateful. Her upraising on the colony of New Hope among the Amish and Mennonites who had relocated there unwilling to give up their lifestyles and traditions had helped calm the firey emotions that stormed her life. The quiet upbringing, the reflection, the love of the God that they worshiped had all helped form the woman she had become. No one had wanted the half romulan child that was found on a derelict in space. It was just luck that the Captain of the vessel that had rescued her had relatives on the pastoral world of New Hope and knew that these traditional people would be best suited the raise the child. When she had discovered her love of tinkering, her family happily allowed her to live with their Mennonite relatives, giving her the balance of a fine education with the peace of the Colony. She had chosen not to join the Church, instead seeking her life out among the stars. But she did not reject all of the beliefs of her people. She wore her kaap while on duty, it was quite useful to keep the grease and grime of working on the mechanical parts of a starship away from her golden hair. She was quite gifted after all in the 'nitty gritty', hands on aspects of engineering. It gave her a peace that she only felt when she communed with her God in prayer. Her faith was a quiet thing however, but that tranquil aura she had touched others around her, and her shyness was respected by those who knew her. A glance at the chronometer told her that she had a few minutes before she was due on shift. So she knelt on a rug before a small alter in the corner of her tiny quarters. ~Dah Hah~ She prayed quietly, asking for the blessing of her God to touch the madness that the crew was facing, to guide the hands of the crew in their duties to rescue the academy cadets aboard the derelicts. She even prayed for the marines that were there to rescue the cadets. That was a conflict with her. Her people were raised to abhor violence and the military, yet Hannah saw them as necessary to protect the ship. Yet another reason she could not have joined the AnaBaptist Faith. She would be shunned from her family. Instead she was welcomed back home on shore leave as a beloved, but errant family member. The soft chiding tone of her Maam was however not enough to make her regret her choice of career. She had wanderlust, and she truly believed that her God was guiding her. Finishing her prayer, she stood and risked a glance in the mirror before leaving to go on shift. There were a number of issues in engineering that needed to be addressed and she was sure that it would be quite busy. She almost itched to get her hands dirty. What never occurred to the half romulan was that she hadn't suffered any ill effects of the void so far. (reply none) (posted by Melinda Gatling) (USS Spectre - Engineering-Security Station FoxTrot - Science Officer Lt. Amari Riya - 21:46) "It happens, but we have to know, that well, it isn't real. It prays on our memories, it makes it feel real, but it can't be real. Because it already happened. It just uses our memories to haunt us with our own emotional ghosts." Will spoke. He had been kind, wiping the tears out from under her eyes. She was interested in him, and it said something that she had come to him in this emotional hell to get comfort. "I'll try to remember that, if it happens again. I feel somewhat useless." Ami set down a glass as she spoke to her friend. "The other Betazoids aboard are doing a shielding technique that Dr. Mias had from another ship to help. The Captain can apparently do it well enough to help, but I can't. I tried and I wasn't able to shield even myself. I'm not really sure what to do. I need to go and take a look at the results of the experiments if the Arboretum is fixed. Would...maybe you like to have dinner in ten-forward after we get out of this hell?" She was blushing under her cocoa colored skin, nervous and stammering. Really what she needed from Will she already had - a good friend that would allow her to talk about anything, and be there for her. Elani was that way too, and Ami was thankful for that. (reply Will, any) (Melinda Gatling) (USS Spectre - Deck 7, Ensign Straits Quarters - TACASC, Ensign (jg) Tyler Strait - 22:00) Tyler lies on his bed tossing and turning. He has been doing so for a few hours now, drifting in and out of sleep. Prior to his shift ending Tyler had spent a grueling 12-hour shift trying to make heads or tails of what had been happening. As Assistant Chief of Security Tyler has been tasked with the readiness of the ships security. The void however has been playing havoc with his people, all of the people on the ship. A third of his staff has been affected by the void. This in turn has raised his stress. He is eager after all to make a good impression with the senior staff, this being his first posting. Tyler was recently posted to the ship upon the ship refit at Starbase 24. He still has a lot to learn about his fellow officers, and feels a need to prove himself to his new crew as well. Tyler sits up in his bed. "I wonder if there is an open holodeck." he says to no on in particular. Tyler stands up and walks over to his closet and dons a training GI. Maybe a workout will help. (Reply Any) (Posted by Mike (ATV Garallon - Ten Forward - Academy Cadet Twinnings - 22:16) Twinnings had been following Kurrik through the ship. Every step he daught had been creeping into his mind. What if they could not find Porsa? What if they were stuck here forever? He glanced at the corridor and and realised that they were near Ten Forward. He was about to tell Kurrik that they were looking for Porsa and not the recipe but Kurrik stepped through the door before he could say anything. He sighed to himself and followed him into Ten Forward. As he stepped into the empty room and looked at the void through the windows. Movement drew his attention back into the room and he saw Porsa standing beside a table. He grinned as he rushed over and gave her a big hug carefully as he did not want squash her in his environmental suit. “Porsa its great to see you. I thought that we had lost you.” (Reply Porsa) (Reply Porsa, Kurrik) (Posted by Robbie) (ATV Garallon - Ten Forward - Academy Cadet, Porsa - 22:18) The bread tasted stale. Indeed, Porsa had expected to see green mould growing upon its surface before biting into it, but sustenance was still sustenance, even if you were dead. Which raised the question once again, why was she hungry? Was it simply a left over emotion from a lifetime of living? An emotional echo whose only purpose was to ease the path of the living into the afterworld? Either way, a dead person should have no need for food, and yet.... "Porsa it's great to see you. I thought that we had lost you." "Whaaaa", said Porsa, her head turning in the direction of the voice, the bread falling to the floor. No, it couldn't be. Could it? Twinnings, grinning from ear to ear as he marched clumsilly across the deck of the Ten Forward lounge in his bulky environment suit. It didn't seem right. Instinctively though, the Cadet stepped back and away as Twinnings arrived and flung his arms around her. Then she baulked at the fact that they had actually gripped her and not passed right through her body as had happened when the Marine detail had marched 'through' her a few hours beforehand. Porsa closed her eyes. Was it a dream? Another taunting emotion resurfacing to torment her, or perhaps to just make her feel better about the fact that she had died? Moving her arms backwards though, she gripped at the arms of Twinnings EV suit and then pushed away to look into his face. He looked pretty real. My god he even smelt pretty real! "I - I'm... I'm not dead?", she asked, wondering then if the image might just vanish in a anthropomorphous haze right there before her eyes before an answer even came. Surpisingly though, it wasn't to be... (Reply Twinnings) (Posted by Alan) (ATV Garallon - Ten Forward - Academy Cadet, Twinnings - 22:22) "I - I'm... I'm not dead?" He grinned down at her through the faceplate of his environmental suit. “Well I hope not as this would make things rather problematic.” He paused for a moment before carrying on. “Are you okay?” (Reply Porsa) “Kurrik’s been trying to work this all out and he thinks that it’s some sort of time shift.” (Reply Porsa) (Reply Porsa, any) (Posted by Robbie) (ATV Garallon - Ten Forward - Academy Cadet, Porsa - 22:23) The arrival of Twinnings in the Ten Forward lounge had sent Porsa skewing off at a tangent. Over the last few hours she had slowly become accustomed to the fact that she actually WAS dead, indeed she had even started to accept that, after all, people passing right through her, not responding to her voice and generally acting as if she wasn't there tended to point a person in that direction. And now Twinnings, grinning from ear to ear had just spannered her line of thinking. "I'm not dead?", she had asked, curiously. “Well I hope not as this would make things rather problematic.”, answered Twinnings. Nothing like stating the obvious after all. If she wasn't dead, then how come..... why did... Porsa stopped talking, her expression frozen as though unable to comprehand anything at all. “Are you okay?”, asked Twinnings. Porsa huffed and shrugged her shoulders, then she looked Twinnings in the eye. "Apparently so", she said, "I mean, not dead is good, right? But I... I don't understand, people were passing right... I mean....", she added, her voice breaking now, a tear running down her cheek. "They couldn't hear me Twinnings!", she snapped, breaking down now into a full on sobbing, which changed again almost instantly to a look of anger, her brow furrowing. "Where the hell were you?", she cried. "I thought you were dead, I thought you were both dead and then... and then I thought I was dead", she exclaimed, emphasising the 'I' as she spoke. (Reply Twinnings) Still sobbing, Porsa began to compose herself, then letting out a heavy sigh and looking about the lounge, she threw both hands into the air and quieried where the Vulcan actually was. "So, where is the Vulcan then?", she asked. “Kurrik’s been trying to work this all out and he thinks that it’s some sort of time shift.”, said Twinnings, clearly unsure whether Kurrik was right or wrong. "A time shift?", said Porsa, quirking her head. "So how does that equate with people walking right through me? And why didn't we all shift together, thus 'staying' together?", she added. "Come to think of it, who turned on the lights? I guess that was Kurrik as well, was it?" (Reply Twinnings) Porsa nodded. Whatever it was that was happening, they had to find some way of getting out of this mess, and soon. "Stupid Vulcan", she mused, "Incidentally, has he found his Mothers damned recipe yet?"... "Computer, load sword master program, setting Kansas Plains" The computer chirped an affirmative and the doors opened up onto a plains field like what would have been found in the early United States. There was a rack to the right of the door, which had several swords loaded onto it. Tyler chose a hand and half sword which while heavier can be wielded in both hands and one, with a shield. Tyler chose to do without the shield and moved several feet away from the rack into a clearing. "Computer, load instructor Toomaz" Toomaz appeared at the edge of the clearing. The Tellerite who had faced off against him was standing to one side nursing her aching head while the Vulcan emergency medic looked at a woman's heavily bruised right leg. The litany he was hearing from various places around the room appeared to be heavily weighted toward dizziness, inability to concentrate and nausea which were all symptomatic of unbalanced brain related function. Riven squeezed Michaella's upper arm slightly and steered her toward the charge nurse who was directing operations, at the moment he didn't see the CMO. (Reply: Michaella) "Nurse where is Dr. Williams?" He asked when he could get her attention. (Reply: Dowsy) “I have to leave you. I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Douwsy nodded as Remae hurried away as he led Riven and Michaella to where Andrew was lying. “He was fine one moment and then launched himself at one of the crew and then became cunconshiuse. He had a few lucid moment where he made the comm call but appart from then he has been just groaning and mumbling something unintelligible.” She stepped back giving Riven and Michaella some space as she kept a close eye on William’s reading. She looked up at Riven as William stirred. "That came from the CMO I'm afraid. I've been monitoring his mental state since I laid eyes on him." She heard Williams try and say something but it just can out as a mumble. Riven and Michaella moved away to continue their conversation and Douwsy stepped closer. ~You really need to wake up Andrew~ She saw Riven move quickly over to Doctor Williams. They had stopped to talk with Dowsy when the First Officer had scampered off to some other duty. Michaella's arm was still in Riven's possession, a fact that she liked a great deal. He grounded her and gave her strength. He was also protecting her from the affects of the void. Dowsy had spoken to them about the CMO's whereabouts, and that gave Michaella the time that she needed to think about the 'experiment' that she was going to perform. She could see ample evidence of people who were affected by the Void. ::I'm going to need to match species as much as possible...:: She thought, not directing the thought. ::That Tellerite seems to have been badly affected, as has Palmer, but they both should be other places doing things.:: Michaella felt a flash of vertigo and she stumbled, falling into Riven. "What..." She asked, then stumbled again, choosing to take a seat. ::Was that you?:: She asked, looking into Riven's dark Betazoid eyes. (reply Riven) A nod as she tapped her comm badge, "Dr. Kirien to Department Heads, could you poll your people and see if any are not affected by the Void? I know this is a strange thing to ask, but could you please send them to sickbay?" She ended the comm message, then looked back over sickbay. "Riven you are needed here." Her voice broke for a moment, she wanted him to stay and protect her from the nightmares haunting the ship. "The good of the ship comes first, and with what Elani is dealing with, I think you need to stay here and help the people coming into sickbay." She looked down at the keyboard for a moment, her mind twining with his for a few precious seconds, privately, sending him all the love and strength through the bond the two full blooded Betazoids shared. "The good of the ship comes first, and with what Elani is dealing with, I think you need to stay here and help the people coming into sickbay." He returned her telepathic caress for a moment then the smile dropped from his face as he 'tasted' the fear in the room. He refocused his eyes and turned back toward her. "You are right actually. I will contact Elani and she can be my ambassador in a sense to Ten Forward. Through her I can extend my control to both areas." He made his way quickly to Doctor Williams. As always Michaella was both proud and a bit astounded by her mate's abilities as a telepath and mind healer. She dampened that pride, aware that he was speaking with the Counsellor in ten forward as well as the CMO in front of them. Michaella's dark eyes were twinkling with somewhat inappropriate amusement as she watched. “Are you okay Dr Mais you look a bit unsteady do you want a lie down?” With that Michaella actually did laugh a bit, speaking before her mate could. "He absolutely needs to lie down and rest, but his dedication to duty will not allow him to do so. But thank you, Doctor. It's appreciated." She glanced towards Mias a moment, "At least by me." (reply Riven) After a few moments, Michaella continued, "Doctor do you know anyone aboard who hasn't suffered from the hallucinations? I'm trying to correlate some data in the hopes of protecting the ship further. I don't think we'll be leaving here anytime soon." (reply Williams) A telepathic blast smacked both Michaella and Riven, causing Michaella to sway on her feet. "Well, that was... We need to get out of here sooner rather than later." "Dr. Williams it's Dr Mias, can you hear me?" Andrew pulled his eyes away from the burning woman as his mind tried to decide whether he had just imagined the voice. ~What the hell! I got nothing else to lose~ “Hallo Dr Mias I seem to be in a slight situation.” "Dr Williams I am going to resume my station in sickbay. He gave a sigh as the pressure suddenly released and his eyes snapped open. He blinked quickly as his blurred vision began to refocus he took a deep breath as he saw Riven standing over him. “Thank you Dr Mais. Its good to be back.” He looked around and saw Michaella standing beside Riven and Douwsy hovering near by. He looked back at Riven who he was had taken hold of Michaella’s arm. ~Ow this is not good~ He pulled himself into a sitting position as he pulled his mind into work mode. ~Right get your back into gear~ “Are you okay Dr Mais you look a bit unsteady do you want a lie down?” (Reply Riven) (Reply Michaella, Riven, any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre - Bridge - Acting FO/CEO, LT (Sg) Remae Ktell - 22:46) The FO was about to leave the assembled crew to their work but the ACEO asked a question. She turned her twinkling eyes toward him, "At least by me." The mind healer smiled though it was but a pale shadow of its former intensity. He was tired, no not tired but fatigued and only a good night's sleep would begin to replace the energy he had been so wantonly expending. "A bed would feel so lovely right now." He tried to keep his voice strong but wasn't sure how well he had succeeded. "After a meal and a hot soak. I'm not as young as I used to be." His grin was however relatively unaffected. "Doctor do you know anyone aboard who hasn't suffered from the hallucinations? I'm trying to correlate some data in the hopes of protecting the ship further. I don't think we'll be leaving here anytime soon." (reply Williams) Riven stumbled in surprise at the intense mental scream of frustration that suddenly rocked both himself and his beloved. Amani was not happy, no not happy at all. "That was Lt. Riya. She's still dealing with a blizzard in the Arboretum." "I am sorry." The Betazoid broke in, he was happy to see the CMO making a swift recovery. "I need to sit down somewhere so I can continue my vigil..." Had he miscalculated his remaining strength? He was feeling a bit woozy. Riven took a step toward a suddenly open chair but his legs turned to jelly an instant before he collapsed to the deck unconscious. She just stood there with what was going on around her went on as she stared at Riven, frightened beyond belief. Her shields were down to begin with, her terror spilled over to the other Betazoids on the ship. That didn't seem to matter. Her bonded was lying there before her. He looked like he was dead. She had lost that sense of him in the back of her head. “He’s unconscious. Can you contact him?” The CMO asked of her. The words were a blur to her. She was just not there, taking up space as the vulcan said something to Andrew, and a nurse tried to push her out of sickbay as the vulcan spoke. "Dr. Williams perhaps it would be best if Dr. Kirien waited outside." The Vulcan spoke. ::MICHAELLA:: Elani screamed in her head, trying to get her out of this mental loop she was trapped in. Turning now toward the group clustered around the CMO the logical reason was almost staring him in the face since the Mind Healer Riven Mias had made himself known and was now moving away from the press. What happened next though seemed to blur as the Vulcan's reflexes and medical instincts which were called upon in cases of extreme emergency sprang into action. The mind healer's eyes first rolled up into his head which was cause enough for Sestan to leap into high gear knowing what the result was going to be. As Riven was collapsing to the floor his legs were already stretching out into a quick sprint. This was not fast enough however as Dr. Mias reached the floor before he could catch him. Sestan was on his knees beside the man and flicking the medical tricorder into action before Nurse Douwsy or Dr. Kirien could react. The CMO was still removing himself from the biobed and on the far side so he was not in position. The readings were beginning to flash as the others reacted. Sestan saw what some would see as troubling readings, a plummeting blood pressure, low blood oxygen content, elevated heart rate, shallow respiration and... The rest of the readings would have to wait, he needed to act now. Sestan picked the man off the floor as though he was a child and bellowed. "Clear the aisle!" The biobeds in general medical were full so he made directly for the door to surgery with the three trailing along in his wake, in normal times he would have consulted with the CMO and gotten direction, this however was far from 'normal times'. In surgery there would be spare beds and if the Betazoid's condition continued to deteriorate then it would save them from having to move him. (Reply: Williams, Douwsy, Kirien, any) (Posted by Charles) (USS Spectre - Medical, surgery - Emergency Medic, OPS Officer Sestan - 22:52) "Dr. Williams perhaps it would be best if Dr. Kirien waited outside." (Reply: Williams) The Vulcan laid the mind healer on the biobed and was already preparing a triox injection as he brought the CMO up to speed on the readings before the vitals came up on the screen. "Blood Pressure 60 over 45, Blood oxygen at 69 percent, heart rate as of reading was 135 and respiration shallow." He injected the triox into the carotid artery and began gathering the materials he needed for an IV as the Chief Medical Officer answered. (Reply: Williams, Douwsy, Kirien, any) (Posted by Charles) (USS Spectre - Ten Forward - Counselor Elani Caras - 22:52) Elani had reeled from her good friend Amari having issues in her department. She did something with the trees in the Arboretum, drawing some peace from her work and research. It was certainly a pleasant place to experience normally. Her head rang out as she attempted to both do the shielding discipline that Riven had showed her, and scan each of the people being brought in, speaking her observations to the Doctor that was assigned to Ten Forward. There were a lot of people here, and she wondered how the ship was managing to function with so many people out of commission, and she prayed that the Captain wasn't affected by this. He was a half Betazoid, so he should be able to do the shielding discipline that was required and manage to run the ship. Her friend Amari couldn't manage to do it, and she was a half betazoid. Elani blew an errant strand of hair out of her face, walking to one of the other patients and she ended up on the floor. Her head rang with pain, and the terror that Michaella was experiencing in losing her Bonded. She shook her head as the pain seemed to just sit there. Then she realized that Michaella was caught in an emotional loop. This was a bad thing as Michaella was a fairly powerful telepath. She had to be to partner with the famous Riven Mias. It was true that Ellie felt somewhat awed by the legends ascribed to the mind healer. :MICHAELLA:: Elani screamed in her head, trying to get her out of this mental loop she was trapped in. It was essentially a slap. ::He's NOT dead. I would have felt it. Relax, Michaella, you are Riven's best shot at making it through whatever this is, and you need to be with him.:: Ellie shored up the ragged ends of her telepathic abilities and just shouted at her friend. Then she leaned back, lightly following Michaella's movements as she fought her way into sickbay, stumbling to get to Riven's side. Ellie paid for her spying with the pain that Michaella was taking on to help Riven. She would apologize later for her snooping, when things weren't so critical. However it seemed that such a time would never come and they would be trapped here in the Void forever. It was so easy to give into into the delusions. It would just take a moment, a moment of rest, and she would be able to return to the discipline. The insidious voice whispered in her mind. Ellie shook her head again, forcing that voice back that was tempting her and got on with her job. A thought popped into his head and he tapped a command into the computer. The computer beeped as the results appeared. He had asked for a electromyography which was a test that measured nerve and muscle function. He looked at the results and then nodded to himself as the results fitted together to form a diagnosis. Out of the corner of his eye the Vulcan noted that the readout was continuing to fall, was there a bottoming out of his vitals coming or was his system shutting down completely? That event was undesirable and their purpose was to halt the downward momentum and bring those readings back up to normal thus stabilizing his condition. Okay from the results it looks like his own immune system is attacking parts of his own nervous system.” Dr. Williams paused for a moment before carrying on. “We need to give him some intravenous immunoglobulin and plasma exchange. This should make a difference.” The IV hooked up he activated the unit and it began to quietly hum, he noted the doctor had run a scan on the man's nervous system and checked to verify the intravenous fluids were flowing unhindered. Satisfied he turned his head to see the Betazoid's Imzadi pushing past the nurse and forcing herself to his side. "As you requested Doctor. Is there anything else you wish before I break out the neural stabilizers?" (Reply: Williams) Logic of course is well known to cancel out emotional considerations and Michaella's presence was not appropriate in this setting where her own emotions would work to destroy any objective outlook on her part. Sestan glanced back at the patient then took a step toward her, intending to usher her out of the ward when she spoke out in protest. "I sense him again. Sestan noted the rising of her voice which was a product of her emotional trap but he stopped his hand which had reached out to grasp her wrist. This variable had not been anticipated but her point was logical. If the mind healer needed a point with which to anchor his fading life signs then who was most appropriate to do so? He cocked his head slightly, it was not his place to make the decision but logically she should be supported. Jake's eyes swept around as the force field was raised and he finally spotted the object of his search. ~A replicator finally!~ He hurried over to it as he mentally rifled through a short menu of items he was hungry for. The idea of roasted venison swept through his head and he waved it away with a grin followed by a frown. Had he been thinking of it or his holodeck alter ego? Was he losing himself to the siren's call of the Void or was it just a whim skimming through his brain? He sighed before pressing the activation button for the unit, his mind had finally settled on what seemed like a sensible meal under the circumstances. "An overstuffed smoked ham and turkey club sandwhich with swiss cheese and mayo on toast and an order of steak fries with sweet iced tea." He sighed in satisfaction at the thought of a high protein and carbohydrate meal that would fill his stomach comfortably, hopefully until either his shift was over or they were out of this armpit of space. No Riven was merely existing, a pinpoint of sentience in a vast and inky blackness. Even in his non-thinking state though he felt pain which was something he was not completely inexperienced with. He had battled the creature while with the Mystique that had attempted to destroy him with its mind and the pain had been blinding until Alura herself it seemed had stepped in to bolster him. For months he had walked around mentally stronger than ever before until the effects gained from the planet had worn off. During that time of expanded power he had felt nearly invincible which was something however he WAS inexperienced with. Part of the training in the temple had taught him the great responsibility of his calling and the humility necessary to carry it out. Riven was a humble man in essence who lived simply and with an abundant supply of kindness and mercy. There is a point in every life however when mortality makes itself known in a repugnant and malicious way. It is the bane of youth, the ravager of the mind, the fear of the aged and the way of all things. There is a point where the body fails under the load it is expected to carry and to say it is jarring is an understatement in the extreme and forever afterward one must live with the knowledge that one's limits have been reached, the boundaries have been established and are slowly closing in. In essence then Riven had taxed his body beyond its limits and in response it had begun to shut down. The mind healer was dying. ::My love,I am here. Jake turned with a mouthful of sandwich to see him with his arms crossed and obviously cold. ~Come to think of it the atmosphere is a BIT chilled.~ His face screwed up in concentration as the scientist moved to the environmental controls, as if in response the temperature plummeted even more drastically and Jake could see his breath beginning to form in voluminous clouds. He swallowed. "That's odd." He was getting to his feet as small white particles formed at the ceiling and began falling before his astonished gaze. "What the hell?" (Reply: Angeni) "It's... It's.. He was amazed for an instant before realizing his exposure in the holodeck probably had hardened him a bit, he was cold yes and getting colder but his body wasn't yet threatening exposure and the dangerous loss of body heat that could lead eventually to hypothermia and frostbite. Was space reaching out to claim them? Jake moved quickly to a work station, momentarily forgetting his half full plate. Surely Palmer could rectify the situation at the environmental controls but in the meantime an environmental anomaly in one area could signify an issue in another as well. The computer logged in instantly, not noticeably faster than normal since one could only see a large increase in processing speed at super cooled temperatures. It didn't occur to him to wonder at why the chief's access point was slow though it could possibly have been due to the interface. The Tellarites were not normally known for being avid traders with the Federation, invariably prefering to lurk in the background taking advantage of things when they could, and yet Sur Vam Gicha seemed positively enthused. Trust was not a commodity in great quantity out here in the 'Shadows', and the Captain felt it best to lean on the side of caution. "Captain, if we can’t speak to the away team, we may have to go and get them... a few ideas come to mind such as an attempt at docking or, seeing they have some power, interlocking our transporter with theirs...", said Remae, breaking that Captains thoughts from the Tellarites. "Yes, of course", said the Captain, his thoughts now on the fact that they still had not been able to hail the Marine XO or his team. Right now, they didn't even know if they were still alive, but knowing Kowalski as he did, the odds were very much in their favour. A plan though had begun to manifest in his mind based no less on the Acting FO's suggestion of linking their trasporter systems with those of the partially powered Garallon. T'Vhor was not too keen right now on using transporters in this place as he considered it too dangerous given the possibly psyonic eddies and currents meandering around them. A modified transport beam though, or perhaps the tractor beam that had already been postulated, could be used as some form of a comms link. Everyone knew that two cans and a piece of string could transmit the spoken voice across a direct route, so why not the modern day equivalent of that? T'Vhor outlined the plan to the FO and then asked for his input on it. Could it be done given this area of space? After all, the laws of physics were bent here and if they were to manage such a task, then an Engineer would have to be ready for that. The Captain awaited Remae's response... (Reply Ktell, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Deck 4, Science Lab 3 - CSO, Lt.jg. Kurt Palmer - 23:09) The science chief was hunched over the environmental controls. One hand on the display the other around his torso to keep warm. "It's not isolated to this lab. I'm seeing similar temperatures in multiple locations including the Arboretum and docking bay three among a host of others." Came the engineer's voice from another workstation. The computer gave an irritated chime. Kurt's console was sluggish and barely acknowledging his commands. "I can't get anything from here." He said snapping around to face the others. The engineer's response came quickly and efficiently. "The problem is most likely in Environmental, I could comm but I'd rather go there myself. It looks like whoever is maintaining the area is out of commission." "Do it." Kurt replied without missing a beat. He knew environmental control was at least five decks down, but had full faith in his crew mate. Besides, the turbolifts had a way of mysteriously moving double time in tough situations. Kurt turned back to the console hearing the swoosh of the doors closing behind Haltom. After brushing a small accumulation of snow, he gave one more attempt to reset the lab's environmental controls. "Doctor, keep your fingers crossed for me..." (Reply, Trommashere IYW) He pressed the round control at the bottom of the console while simultaneously holding a rectangular control at the top. Kurt held his breath; This was his standard technology problem solving technique. There was an extended computer chime, and they were back in business. "Bingo!" He exclaimed smiling back at the doctor. "I may learn to use these computers yet!" He clicked a few more controls and slowly the air and temperature returned to normal. "Palmer to Haltom." He tapped his commbadge "I managed it from here, we just needed a hard reset." (Reply, Haltom, Trommashere, any) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - Medical - ACouns Lieutenat, Dr. Riven Mias - 23:10) PAIN His world had been reduced to it in its purest essence. It was the pain that strangely enough began to bring him back to consciousness. It was like waking to find yourself with your lower limbs protruding into a bonfire. Riven hadn't felt such pain in a long time but in the midst of it he could feel another mind inside his. Michaella was there and was telling him she always would be. The world of pain didn't appreciate such tender niceties but since she was siphoning off much of it there was little it could do to stop her. And Riven was slowly growing stronger with each passing minute, strong enough that the dream of waking up with his legs in a bonfire was beginning to recede and he began floating upward toward a coherent thought. ~It is beginning to taper off, has it reached its apex then? Is it going away? ~ (Reply: Michaella) He hadn't expected the reply though he should have, had be been in his right mind and not completely out of it he would have. ::My love what has happened?:: (Reply: Michaella) Her answer nudged him farther toward consciousness. He began to be aware he was lying comfortably on a bed though his freedom of movement was restricted for some reason. :: What happened my love?:: (Reply: Michaella) He had already asked the question but he wasn't completely coherent yet, the pain was still savage enough that it took much of his will to fight it off. But he was getting close. Soon, very soon he would wake up. Would he be screaming from the pain? He didn't know but then again he wasn't coherent enough to realize yet where he was and if he had been he would have been reassured. What better place to get sick than in sickbay after all? He didn’t expect that idea and he had to think on it for a moment. “The issue is not using typical hailing channels, the Garallon wouldn’t process the sign in normal ways... someone could miss it.”, he said thinking on it some more. “The signal could be encoded to activate all the speakers on the Garallon making the signal a ship-wide communication, everyone would hear it!” “I don’t think the transporter signal or a tractor beam could achieve this, we would have to use the main deflector dish... its the only part of the ship that can handle the frequencies needed. Captain, permission to leave the Bridge?”, he said standing. (Reply Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 23:12) Then Captain's idea, it would seem, was less than perfect, which was an unusual situation for a Vulcan to find themselves in. Normally, any decision that a Vulcan might make would involve logic above all else, tempered with engineering ability and the science around it. Remae was just about as good an engineer as anyone could be and his knowledge of complex situations, unquestionable. So, the 'Two tins and a piece of string' approach might not work, but the idea had seemingly led the FO on another possibility that might have more chance of yielding success. The deflector dish... “The issue is not using typical hailing channels, the Garallon wouldn’t process the sign in normal ways... someone could miss it.”, Remae had offered. He was right of course, his additional mention of trying to turn the Garallon into one giant linked up speaker system was also right and the CO could already see the gears of motion formulating a plan inside the Bajoran's ever active mind. "Captain, permission to leave the Bridge?”, he said, an urgency in his voice now. The Captain acceeded of course with a nod. "Keep me appraised of the situation", he said as the Bajoran moved off. "Keep in mind also that we still have a deadline here", he added, "If we cannot raise the ship within two hours, then we will be taking our chances and towing her out before the entire crew go mad" (Reply Ktell, IYW) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Science Lab 2 - FO/CEO, LT (Sg) Remae Ktell - 23:15) “Ensign Haltom!”, said Remae bursting in, looking like he had run another lap around the Spectre. “I need your help in Deflector Control.”, he said looking down at the empty plates... his stomach then let loose the loudest rumble he’d ever heard. “Oh, you’ll have to excuse...” “... my stomach...”, he said. Was his stomach actually shaking... when was the last time he ate? “We’re going to try and contact the Garallon and get out of this Void... can you give me a hand”, he asked and then looked around, “I need lots of hands.”, he asked of all the assembled. (Reply from Any in Science Lab 2) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (USS Spectre - Science Lab 2 - ACEO, Ensign Jake Haltom - 23:17) "Ensign Haltom!" Jake looked up from the plate he had just returned to, the bite of sandwich was still in the beginning stage of being chewed and though it demanded his complete attention he gave a few perfunctory swipes with his teeth before forcing it down via a slug of the sweet iced tea. "Yes sir, what do you need?" He dropped the rest of the turkey and ham club on the plate reluctantly and stood to his feet. The FO appeared to be on the verge of being out of breath and his face and voice projected urgency. ~Well at least I got a bit of food in me and that has certainly helped.~ “I need your help in Deflector Control." Remae's eyes swept across the plates. Jake's lips swept into a grin at the sound, it was fairly quiet and damned if he wasn't sure he had heard the man's stomach growl like a lion on the hunt! “Oh, you’ll have to excuse... my stomach...”, The chief said apologetically, the look on his face was one of embarrassment which made Jake's grin get wider. “We’re going to try and contact the Garallon and get out of this Void... can you give me a hand?” Jake's grin dropped a little as his eyes dipped back to his plate, the sandwich and fries looked pleadingly back at him, they were lonely and yearned for the dark and cuddly recesses of his stomach. He sighed. "Of course sir." “I need lots of hands.” Remae's look at the others left no doubts as to his meaning. (Reply: Palmer, Angeni) Jake was about to head out the door when he had a sudden thought. ~It's about shift time after all, I'll bet she is available, it's not like anyone is sleeping now most likely.~ His fingers contacted the comm unit. "Engineer Yoder I need you in deflector control, are you available?" (Reply: Hannah Yoder) His lips curled in a smile, he considered her in some ways to be an oxymoron of sorts, as a Menonite wasn't she supposed to be averse to technology or was it just the Amish that were that way. He found the faiths to be confusing at the best of times and this was certainly not a day when he was at his sharpest. "Meet you there." He said crisply and signed off. Since getting out of the Void was apparently the goal of this exercise it behooved them to have as many experienced 'Hands' as they could get. He activated his comm again. "Engineer Scott Smith meet me in Deflector Control, the First officer has a special project for us." (Reply: Scott) As Jake stepped into the hallway he nodded. "ASAP Mr. Smith, Haltom out." However, he was sure that the Ensign wouldn't mind if he stole some of the fries, of course not, he was a professional with sympathy of the pleading case of his Bajoran's stomach. "Let's go...", he said, sounding slightly muffled, sounding like a man with a mouthful of slightly cold fries. (Reply Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 23:22) One minute, the Captain had been looking at the viewscreen at the swirling gasses and rocks surrounding the Spectre, meandering aimlessly around it's hull, its nacelles, nacent, seemingly oblivious to the chaos that was occuring within. And then he was gone... Sitting, cross legged upon the floor now in a place he did not recognise. Kholinar in reach, but just out of his grasp. His eyes focused upon an ethereal manifestation appearing just before his eyes. Then, all at once he was aware that this was not... now. Closing his eyes, he stilled his mind. ~What is this place? Where am I? Why have you brought me here?~ Nothing... ~This is the past. What has this to do with now?~ Nothing... There were clearly no answers here, the only ones that might come would come from within himself, but he knew those answers already...didn't he? ~Logic is the answer. Logic will help me. Logic will provide all that I need.~ The Captain opened his eyes and glanced around this place in which he had found himself. Clearly, it was no longer the bridge of the USS Spectre, that much was for sure. Bare. Barren. Devoid of features. All at once though the disciplined reactions of a Starfleet Captain kicked in... He needed to be back on the bridge of his ship. There were people dependent upon him, their lives in his hands. But... he could not move. What could he do? T'Vhor attempted to still his mind once again, but his mind drifted once again, back to the time that he had achived Kholinar in the temple of T'panit, that one essential goal of all Vulcans, the pinnacle of emotionless achievement. And yet, didn't that constitute some form of emotional attachment to the achievement itself. Pride? A sence of success which threatened to dash all that he had achieved? All at once his mind snapped and his brow furrowed, the anguish of the conflict manifesting upon his face in a manner that was undeniable, and utterly unforgivable, for a Vulcan anyway. Emotions were not allowed! Period.... Then, a star appeared before him. It was glowing with a light that seemed impossible, perhaps even not of this universe. What was it? Was it the answer to a question, a sigil or an indication for something that had no explanation? Had he gone mad? So many questions, so little time. "Take me back to my ship", he cried, the anguish upon his face unmistakeable. And then a voice made itself heard... "T'Vhor. This is not the time for query. You must leave this place... now" "Tell me how. My ship is lost in this place. My crew is losing it's mind", said T'Vhor, unaware right now that he had referred to every single person aboard the Spectre as a single entity. "The answer is not for you, not at this time", said the voice. "Leave now" And then as quickas he had found himself in this place, he was back on the bridge, the OPS officer ready with a report on the status of the ships essential systems. (Reply Smith) The Captain turned suddenly and with a start, his mind attempting to latch on to something, anything that constituted solidity after his experience with the ethereal. "Where is Remae?", he asked, aware now that as the acting FO, he might have to resolve command to the Bajoran if his senses were to sway once again. The commanding officer of a Starfleet vessel could not afford to be out of control. Not even for one moment and as such, the FO needed to be on hand. "Where is Lieutenant Ktell?", he repeated.... (Reply Smith, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Deflector Control - CSO, LT. (Jg) Kurt Palmer - 23:23) The doors parted to a busy scene. Several crew members were already at work. Lieutenant Remae addressed the group, and explained their plan. Kurt blinked and looked at Dr. Trommashere as if to say 'how are we going to help.' While he was perfectly able to analyze the void, he was unsure how much help he would be with writing computer code and redistributing power. Perhaps he and the doctor could turn the message into a catchy tune to be played over the Garallon's speakers. The first officer finished "...We could end up burning out the dish and if we damage it, the Spectre won't be able to do better than 1/4 impulse or receive any messages." ~ well, that takes the pressure off.~ "How can I assist, sir?" Kurt asked. (Reply, Remae, any) ((Post by Cody)) (USS Spectre - Deflector Control - Acting FO/CEO, LT (Sg) Remae Ktell - 23:25) Some of the crew were already here and it seemed already getting to work. Remae had to quickly remind them of their goal. "What we are trying to do is signal the Garallon and get in touch with the away team. The signal will have to be sent via our dish to theirs and the message will have to be encoded with instructions that, upon receipt, the Garallon's computer will pipe the message to all speakers, all across the ship.", he said as he sat down at one of the rear stations. He left the main controls alone, leaving them to the experts and to them the task of powering up their own dish. Remae added, "It's going to have to be powerful, we have to punch through the Void's mess of radiation, electromagnetic soup and who knows what else. I will reroute auxiliary power to the Deflector.", he was working the console and continued. "Be careful! We could end up burning out the dish and if we damage it, the Spectre won't be able to do better than 1/4 impulse or receive any messages.", he said as he started the task of encoding what he wanted to say. There was no time to resources for a long message, it would have to be direct and short. He didn't even know if it was possible. How was he going to explain his idea? He didn't know how to make all the modifications himself, he needed all of their expertise to pull it off. "How can I assist, sir?", said the CO and Remae looked at the front controls. "Lieutenant, the central controls of the dish are yours.", he indicated to the front of the room. Beyond it, the entire dish assembly was attached to the hull of the Spectre. Those controls were about as close to the dish as you could get without getting into the bulkhead and touching it directly. The control room's walls were covered in cables, conduits and control surfaces that connected the dish with the rest of the ship. Directly ahead, in front of the controls that the FO had asked the Chief Science Officer to man was a small window that allowed a view to the deflector dish outside. "Mr Palmer, can you start preparing the dish. We've never done anything like this before so we need a way of making our signal hit the dish of the Garallon.", he turned to the Doctor. "Doctor Trommashere, we could have a brief window of receiving information from the Garallon, could you add to the signal a way of initiating an internal medical scan? You know more about medical scanners than anyone.", he said and looking at them all, "Perhaps on the return signal, we could grab some basic scan data?" "I am grasping, I know, but we may only have enough power, time and capacity to send one and receive one message.", he said looking concerned that he was just making no sense and then turned to Haltom. "I think the Garallon is going to suffer when their computer attempts to return the signal to us..." Remae stopped to look at everyone and waited for them to consider the plan further that he had dreamed up, was it even possible? He must have looked like a half-crazed mad-man, attempted to stuff his crazy ideas into a workable plan. He hadn't even given them a chance to add in their ideas or suggestions. So he stopped and waited for everyone to reply with their recommendations. (Reply from Palmer, Trommashere, Haltom, Any) (Posted by Anthony Keen) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 23:27) T'Vhor glanced about the bridge, all eyes seemingly upon him now concerning what to them must surely have looked like he had gone stark raving mad. Hadn't he just sent Remae off to work on the comms plan? For a moment, his mind was a blank, the vision in his head still clear but dissipating now, the bright star manifesting before him, the voice telling him to get out of this place... NOW! “Um Sir he is in Deflector control Sir. Do you want me to contact him?”, said the Ops Officer, obviously confused. T'Vhor paused briefly, the only sounds around him coming from the ship itself. The consoles bleeping with their usual reactionary tones, the gentle thrum of the warp engines idling as the bridge crew waited. "No", said the Captain in response to Smith's query. "No, I... I... forgive me Ensign. I am not myself", he added, which right now was probably not the most wanted response that anyone might be wanting to be hearing from the Captain of a Starfleet vessel. "Remae is working on the deflector", he said, more as though to reassure himself than anyone else. Then he glanced to Lieutenant Commander Yates, the officer currently stationed at the Tactical console. "Lieutenant Yates, you have the bridge. Inform me the moment that Lieutenant Remae is ready to implement the plan to communicate with the Garallon ", he said, standing now to make his way towards the turbolift. As a logical Vulcan, he knew of course that the bridge was obviously no place for a compromised Captain, and with the FO currently indisposed and engaged in essential work, T'Vhor headed out for sickbay... It was unusual to involve a grunt in their plans, but the newly minted First Officer was outlining something that was completely bat shit crazy and was likely to blow up the deflector dish if everything wasn't perfect. If it was... maybe... it might work. Her Boss stopped talking, and Hannah announced her presence, "Crewman Hannah Yoder reporting as ordered Sir. I believe that your plan has a half chance of blowing the deflector, and a half chance of it working. I hate to suggest it, but before we begin, Sir, are you sure that you are not suffering from a void delusion?" Hannah held her breath, looking neat and prim in her uniform, her hair pulled back and the kapp without the strings topping it. She showed none of the signs that she was suffering from void delusions. Her face held no sense of stress, her voice showed no strain. She looked normal. This had nothing to do with their intelligence after all but with experience. "I am grasping, I know, but we may only have enough power, time and capacity to send one and receive one message." He then turned to Jake. "I think the Garallon is going to suffer when their computer attempts to return the signal to us..." Jake nodded, if there were any hiccups with the power on the Garralon's end they could easily blow a coupling at the very least. "You're right about it being a hare brained idea Ms. Yoder but at this point we are reduced to grasping at straws and anything we try that has even a half percent chance of working needs to be taken seriously. A few times, and perhaps not unexpectedly, this drew some concern from members of the crew. 'Are you alright, sir?' 'Is everything OK?' Each time, the Captain answered in the same way. "I'm fine. Please, continue in your duties", and they eventually went on their way unconvinced that the Captain actually 'was' fine. Who were they to question his judgement though? Ensigns, a few Lieutenants, one or two non commisioned engineers ensconced within an opened Jefferies tube hatch and trying to make head or tale of why a panel had just blown out. The truth of the matter though was that the Captain wasn't fine. Disappearing into some dark, cold corner of his mind whilst on the bridge and in command of the ship, wasn't fine at all, and well he knew it. ~Doctor Williams will help. And with Riven's assistance, they will reach a solution as to why this is happening, and just how long it will be before I lose control completely~ he thought, knowing at the same time that both Williams and Riven himself were likely already stretched as far as they could possibly stretch. Moving through the corridors towards sickbay, the Captain could hear the words again. Urgent in their advice... 'This is not the time for quations T'Vhor... You must leave here... NOW' T'Vhor screwed his eyes up again as an Ensign in medical teal moved past him just outside of sickbay, stopping in her tracks and then turning about concerned. "Sir?", she enquired. "Is everything OK?" The Captain turned about, his eyes narrowed, the light of the corridor itself causing pain now. This was no time for the 'I'm fine' act, having reached his destination now, so for the first time since leaving the bridge, he answered truthfully. "No", he answered. "No, it is not. I need to speak to Doctors Williams and Riven", he added. "It is most important" The Ensign wasted no time of course, taking hold of the Captains arm and gently leading him into sickbay and towards one of the few unoccupied biobeds in the entire department, this itself prompting T'Vhor to wonder if his need were perhaps not as great as some of his crew. No sooner had he settled down upon the bed itself though, the Ensign was calling for assistance.
