(jg) Carlyle Deston - 18:18) The threat of assimilation (temporarily) averted, Deston shakily approached the display terminals by the container of - if the Borg were to be believed - genetic material from the Subspace River. The emotional drain he'd endured from the moment of his capture, punctuated by that last, direct threat, was exhausting him, but he was also spurred on by that same threat. He'd been here before, thanks to Admiral Doenitz. It was not a place in his emotional landscape he preferred to remain. He rested his hands on the console, trying to relax so the shakes would go away. He closed his eyes and drew three slow breaths, regaining some small measure of calm. Then he peered at the various displays on the console, trying to make heads or tails out of the decidedly non-Federation-standard layouts. He tapped one of the displays. "I am c-completely unfamiliar with whatever s-sym- language is being used here. Please display all data in Federation S-standard." ~Dammit, now I'm stuttering. Got to calm down fast. And think of a way out of this!~ Deston glanced at several other displays, taking longer with ones that showed data matrices less familiar to him. "L-look here - how does tachyon vector data even 'remotely' tie in w-with solanogen density? Do you even 'bother' to measure tetryon density?" As Deston began to get more involved with the problem laid out for him, his other issues began to feel more remote. His nervous stutter began to fade as interest and professional irritation grew. "Where are the manipulation points on these readouts? I need to rotate and scale these graphs. And tell me exactly how, where and when you took this sample; I'll need to account for potential contamination. I- well, like this. Chronometric resonation is incredible! Did you extract this sample from a point singularity or something? I need to know this stuff, if you want me to give you a proper analysis." Deston shook his head, barely noting the Borg's reactions, as he began delving deeper into the data on the displays. (Reply any) NRPG: Deston still has no idea what the "chronometric resonation" really means, to him personally. Nor does he know that Borg ships' atmospheres contain tetryon particles, which may have some bearing on his questions. Ignorance, however, isn't necessarily bliss. (Posted by John O'Neill) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Borg Drone, One of four - 18:20) The Borg seemed unphased by the Starfleet officers sudden inability to speak coherently without stammering, it probably didn't even enter into their current programming, after all, had anyone ever heard a drone stammer? Probably not. One of four continued to systematically oversee Deston's actions, noting as it did so how the Starfleet officer seemed to be speaking to himself from time to time in regards what he was seeing, rather than directing questions to them per se. That of course did not remain the case for very long, Deston turning to face One of four with certain concerns regarding their sampling methods. "L-look here - how does tachyon vector data even 'remotely' tie in w-with Solanogen density?", he began "Do you even 'bother' to measure Tetryon density?" The Drone remained steadfast and replied accordingly. "The Borg evaluate and correlate all necessary data, all the data required is there", it said. Deston appeared unconvinced by the Drones singular response. "Where are the manipulation points on these readouts? I need to rotate and scale these graphs...... And tell me exactly how, where and when you took this sample; I'll need to account for potential contamination.", he added, seemingly becoming more and more irritated by the inconsistencies by the second. ".....Chronometric resonation is incredible! Did you extract this sample from a point singularity or something? I need to know this stuff, if you want me to give you a proper analysis", he added. The drone however responded in it's usual, monotone predictability. "Timeframe analysis is here... and here", said the Borg, "relevant sample removal points are irrelavant to the data, the organic component is widespread but inactive. The Borg require activation of the final sequence to proceed" (Reply Deston) "That is irrelavant... you will proceed with disassembly of the final sequence", said the drone, leaving the Starfleet officer to the task assigned to him as it continued to observe and ratify the process. (Reply Deston) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Lt. (jg) Carlyle Deston - 18:22) "Timeframe analysis is here... and here," said the Borg, "relevant sample removal points are irrelevant to the data, the organic component is widespread but inactive. The Borg require activation of the final sequence to proceed." "What do you mean, irrelevant?" barked Deston, turning from the displays toward the incredibly annoying and unhelpful drone. "Everything is relevant! Raw data without environmental context is meaningless! /Anything/ without context is meaningless!" "That is irrelevant... you will proceed with disassembly of the final sequence," said the drone, leaving the Starfleet officer to the task assigned to him as it continued to observe and ratify the process. "Fine!" Deston turned back to the displays, and closed his eyes. "Don't bother me for a while. I need time to think." ~By Klono, this is frustrating... but I think it's buying me some time. ~They haven't assimilated me; they need me as is to solve a problem they cannot solve themselves. Itself? Non sequitor. Don't get distracted by tangentials. So threats of assimilation are just that, threats, as long as I seem able to make progress. Once they figure out I'm not the subspace genius they think I am, that protection's out the window. ~Which brings up the next point. They know exactly who I am, but they are convinced I'm some sort of expert on subspace. Which I am avowedly /not/. Unless I learned something in the recent past which seems unimportant, but which would become important in the context of this situation. Ha ha, I have successfully anticipated myself. Although... I have to admit, I've made a huge leap in my understanding of subspace in the last ten minutes. If the Borg are positive about the river's nature - and some of the anomalous data about it do fit in with such a hypothesis - then I've actually started becoming an expert... on...~ Deston's eyes opened, and he stared glassily at the displays for a few seconds. Then he reached forward and (clumsily, due to the unfamiliar controls) manipulated the data. After a minute or so, he had the results. ~These bastards travel through time! There is a minimum temporal displacement of one hundred twenty standard days - more! /That's/ what that blue glow was!~ Belatedly, he ran through some of the other data sets, making a show of it. Then he sat on the floor, back to the console, and closed his eyes yet again. "Thinking!" he said, preemptively, throwing a hand up in a halting gesture. (Reply Borg) (Posted by John O'Neill) (USS Spectre – Medical Research – Counselor Ensign JG George K. Samhan – 18:25) "Yeah, if we just fabricated the sequence, using these modifications," the Lieutenant entered in a bunch of data much faster than George could follow, but once he finished George saw that the simulation agreed with the changes. He studied it closely as Matthew continued, "We should be able to replicate an airborne version that can be vented through the Spectre's ventilation systems, exposing the entire crew, and efficitvely neutralizing the virus." George studied it for a few moments, which grew into emotions of both relief and envy. "Yes... yes, that looks about right." "We should probably leave the stuff running for a 24 hour period to effectively neutralize the virus from spreading, and I don't think inoculation will be necessary, the airborne sequence will be breathed into the body and immediately go to work. As long as the infected is still breathing of course. We can get started replicating the Ensign's discovery right away, if you give the order commander, as both FO and CMO, and the only medical doctor here, you are most qualified to make this decision.. George nodded, solemnly, "I find myself in agreement, but it's your call." "Okay Santiago. We will send it by aerosol but run the sequence through the medical database. Let's check that it works on all species on board and nothing unexpected will mutate from it before we pump it all over the ship. Once that is cleared start replicating it. I'll inform the captain before we start." George quickly turned to the console, and did a database search. As the FO turned to comm badge the captain, George whispered into Santiago's ear, "It's a go, sir." (Reply Santiago) The FO called Sick Bay with the information. =/\=We have found a treatment for the virus. Aerosol and pump it through the ventilation system. It should take about 24 hours to totally work on the crew. We will be starting shortly.=/\= He then looked to the others, "Okay whenever you are ready let's get started." It was then Jaret Rock excused himself, "Excuse me please, I must return to my duties in security. There are hot spots that I need to make sure are being cleared and kept secured." George thought, ~and a potential pandemic on board isn't a "hot spot"? Eh, best he doesn't get in the way.~ The FO thanked him for his services and let him leave. "Thank you both for your help." He said, "I'm sure sickbay could do with a hand if you are both free otherwise if you have other things to do please. I'll sort it out here." George nodded, "I just got here, so I'm going far beyond the call of duty. I think I'm going to have some long awaited dinner, then get to bed. It was a pleasure to serve, but I'm sure you will understand." George then raced to the door as fast as he could without it looking like he was racing to the door, took off the decontamination suit in the doorway, and headed toward the mess hall. With that Matthew turned and left and headed to decontaminate and head to the bridge. (reply none) (posted by Will Banowsky) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Lt. (jg) Carlyle Deston - 18:31) Deston stood and turned back to the console. "Explain how I can manipulate the sample you have collected. Teach me the controls." (Reply Borg) (Posted by john O'Neil) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Borg Drone, One of Four - 18:32) One of Four was becoming impatient now, if indeed impatient was a term that could be used in relation to the Borg, either way the drones that stood by doing more or less nothing simply observed, One of Four however, having found itself in control of the others was being driven by impulses coming from the vinculum that could only be interpreted in Human terms as 'impatient'. It had observed the Starfleet officers actions to the letter and then when he had finally sat down upon the floor, it had also acknowledged the Human need for silence when contemplating a difficult task. This did not help the course of the Borg though, time was more apparent here than anyone realized. Finally though, the Starfleet officer stood and made his way back to the consoles, One of Four duly followed. "Explain how I can manipulate the sample you have collected. Teach me the controls.", asked Deston. The Borg response was predictably logical and to the point. "These controls are of hybrid construct, they are the result of assimilation of species three seven eight three, five zero zero eight and two four six one", said the drone, "you are familiar with two of these species" (Reply Deston) "The third is the species known as Brunali, this species is skilled in genetic manipulation", said the Borg. (Reply Deston) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Lt. (jg) Carl Deston - 18:34) The Borg drone's reply to Deston's request was, by now, predictably unhelpful. "These controls are of hybrid construct, they are the result of assimilation of species three seven eight three, five zero zero eight and two four six one. You are familiar with two of these species. The third is the species known as Brunali, this species is skilled in genetic manipulation." Deston stared at the Borg drone, trying with limited success to meet it's eyes... eye. Optics. "But not species two four six eight or one four nine. 'Obviously'. Listen, Captain Helpful - may I call you that? - I'm sure it must be all kinds of awesome, swimming around in your fun little closed circle of friends, knowing all the private slang and little in-jokes that keep you comfortably separated from the paparazzi. But you've invited me in as an outside contractor, and I'm not privy to the secret lingo you're bandying about. So far, all I'm getting is that the Borg, when they claim to assimilate a species' biological and technological distinctiveness - that's the correct phrase, am I right? - seem to actually be assimilating a species' biological and technological POOR SOCIAL SKILLS!!! I'm amazed you function as a networked hivemind, given your obvious inability to COMMUNICATE!! Are you striving, as a culture, to attain global autism? By Klono, so much computing power, so easily accessible to you, and you can't put two and two together to make four! DON'T interrupt me with a breakdown of your base numeral system, it is irrelevant!" Deston was breathing rather heavily now, as he fought down his emotions. Fear, frustration, exhaustion, helplessness, had conspired to trigger this angry outburst, along a channel which (he hoped) wouldn't provoke a... 'negative' response from his Borg captor. "Now, you've named a species I'm not familiar with. Keeping in mind that I do not know your private numbering system, what are the other two species that you say I 'am' familiar with?" (reply Borg) "Great. Now that we've established that, teach me the controls. I'm an expert in subspace-" here Deston mentally crossed his fingers - "not an expert in genetics, and especially not in hybrid genetic manipulation technology. Assist me in the learning curve. And be descriptive when I ask a question - I don't need any more poorly-written software 'help file' answers. Those are a hindrance, understand?" (reply Borg) (Posted by John O'Neil) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Borg Drone, One of Four - 18:36) The Drone was apparently 'unphased' by the Starfleet officers outburst in regards them not being at all too helpful. It had simply observed the mans actions and had then filed them with the hive mind that still operated within the ship, albeit at a much reduced level. One of Four had attempted to provide the required information the best it could, however, the Science officer seemed unable to grasp the concept of the controls before him. "Listen Captain Helpful", he had began, before then mentioning other species by the numeric names One Two Three Four, and then One Four Nine. Of course, the drone did not 'get' sarcasm at all, it merely correlated the response to what it knew. "Species One Two Three Four, Punani Prime, typically warrior in nature..... and not of requirement in this location. Species One Four Nine utilize extensive medical expertise", it continued, "this has been integrated into the collective and serves our need.... it does not serve our need in this location" Deston seemed unperturbed and continued on in regards his need for some clear directive here. "Now, you've named a species I'm not familiar with. Keeping in mind that I do not know your private numbering system, what are the other two species that you say I 'am' familiar with?", he asked. The response was predictably direct. "Species Three Seven Eight Three, Romulan - Species Five Zero Zero Eight, Klingon", it said. "You are familiar with the technology of these two species.... you will complete the final sequence" "Great. Now that we've established that, teach me the controls. I'm an expert in subspace.......not an expert in genetics, and especially not in hybrid genetic manipulation technology. Assist me in the learning curve. And be descriptive when I ask a question - I don't need any more poorly-written software 'help file' answers. Those are a hindrance, understand?", said Deston. "What is 'Help file' answers?", inquired the drone. (Reply Durgil, IYW) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Lt. (jg) Carl Deston - 18:37) Utterly innocent of any type of sarcasm or slang, the Borg inquired, "What is 'Help file' answers?" Deston sighed. "In this context, anything supposed to assist in performance or operation by theoretically offering supporting information, but which instead offers only statements of the obvious, self-referential pointers, further layers of obscuring jargon, or null landings. In other words, Captain Helpful, 'help' that doesn't 'help'. But let me guess, this is all 'non-sequitor', correct? Don't bother to answer that, it was a rhetorical question." (Reply None) (Posted by John O'Neil) (USS Spectre - Marine Barracks - 2nd Lt. Robert Sykes - 18:40) "Not me man, I'm for waiting here until this is properly investigated, as the guy who found him their gonna wanna speak to me", said O'Hara. "I am pretty sure, they will want to talk to both of us, I guess since I was the medic that pronounced him dead." Lewis bit at his lower lip in thought.. "I can't understand it, he was fine when we left.... dumbass Spaniard had to have the last word didn't he", said Lewis. "We may never know Lewis, and yeah, he had to have the last word, and it truly was his last...." O'Hara had been standing guard at the door to the Marine barracks. Sykes was seated upon his bunk, lost in thought. He was just trying to figure out what happened to Ramirez. Ramirez was a little crazy, but this was ridiculous. Robert had no idea what had happened. "We have an unexplained death here, I think we need a full team on hand", said O'Hara. “I know. Lt Donaldson would like for me to send his deepest regrets for not being able to make this investigation. He currently has other duties that have prevented him to make it. In his absence he has sent me. I am Chief Petty Officer Jaret Rock.” "Don't want just anybody down here looking into this", he said sharply, "just get your boss down and we'll make a start, Rameriz was our brother" “I understand your concern, but I assure you that I am a complete professional and expert. I have been in Starfleet and in Security for 20 years. I will do a complete and accurate investigation.”, said Rock, trying his best now to be tactful and respecting of the loss the Marines now felt. "So where do you want to start?", he asked. “If you could please show me the body?”, said Rock, just as more security members arrived carrying equipment cases. "Sure, he's on the bunk.... he's the one with the sheet over him", said O'Hara The security officer then approached the bunk in readiness for the teams rather unsavoury task ahead. Robert went over to Lewis and whispered into his ear. "You think they would have sent an officer to investigate this. Do those fleeters think so lowly of us to send a CPO, no offense to you NCO's" (Reply O'Hara iyw) "Now Chief, it looks like there was some asphixiation related trauma that caused the death, but I can't be sure, it was just a cursery glance." (reply Rock) (repy O'hara, Rock) (posted by Will Banowsky) (USS Spectre – Marine Barracks – Security, CPO Jaret Rock – 18:47) "Sure, he's on the bunk.... he's the one with the sheet over him", said O'Hara Jaret with the team of 2 behind him walked past the entrance door and over to the bunk where the dead marine laid. It was clear walking over to the bed that the scene had been touched by someone already. Most likely, like most cases, by the person that initially found the body. That person on instinct, especially a marine, would want to help a person in need. Jaret would never blame anyone in such a situation, but he had seen cases in the past be corrupted or contaminated by the post-interference. "Now Chief, it looks like there was some asphyxiation related trauma that caused the death, but I can't be sure, it was just a cursory glance." As the other two security officers continued to look over the scene and record any findings that were relevant Jaret went to speak with the 2nd Lt. “Were you the one that found Marine Ramirez?” (reply O’Hara, Sykes) The other Marine responded quickly. “Can you please explain to me how and where you found Marine Ramirez?” (reply O’Hara) "What did you do after you knew he was dead. Did you move the body in any manner?" (reply O'Hara) “Is this your living quarters Lt?” (reply O’Hara, Sykes) “Have either of you seen anything missing or something out of place?” (reply O’Hara, Sykes) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre – Marine Barracks – Corporal Lewis O'Hara – 18:48) "Sure, he's on the bunk.... he's the one with the sheet over him", said O'Hara. Rock remained professionally neutral, obviously not responding, or indeed acknowledging the Marines perhaps inappropriate stab at humour under these circumstances. He had simply walked over to the bunk containing Rameriz' body and then payed it a cursory examination, clearly not wanting to interfere with what may be a crime scene right now. "Now Chief, it looks like there was some asphyxiation related trauma that caused the death, but I can't be sure, it was just a cursory glance.", said Rock to one of his compatriots who had by now appeared at his side. The CPO then moved to quiz the marines themselves, starting with the Corporal. “Were you the one that found Marine Ramirez?”, he asked. O'Hara shifted uneasily. "So what if I was?", he said sharply, "you know, you people make me sick, you come down here ill equipped and without your superior officer and then start asking stupid questions", he added. "I came in and there he was.... quiet, for once. What difference does it make who found him", said Lewis, clearly more than a little upset about the loss of his friend. “Can you please explain to me how and where you found Marine Ramirez?”, asked Rock. "Yeah, I just walked in and dumped my kit, Rameriz was where he is now, on the bed. I assumed he was asleep", said Lewis. "What did you do after you knew he was dead. Did you move the body in any manner?", asked Rock. "I gave him a shove with my boot to get him moving", said O'Hara, "needless to say, he did'nt budge.... apart from that I didn't touch him, Sykes confirmed life extinct" “Is this your living quarters Lt?”, said the CPO. "It's where we bunk, it ain't where we live", said O'Hara looking to Sykes as he spoke. (Reply Sykes, IYW) “Have either of you seen anything missing or something out of place?”, asked Rock. At that point, Lewis stood angrily at the line of question that was now coming at them. "Are you suggesting someone came in here, killed Rameriz and then stole property?", he hollered. (Reply Rock, Any) "One - it would take someone highly specialized to take out Rameriz, which would mean another Marine, and Two - there is a code of honour amongst Marine ranks which goes something like this. 'No friggin Marine steals off another!'... So forget that right now", said O'Hara as he retook his seat upon his bunk. (Reply Rock, Sykes, Any) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Lt. (jg) Carl Deston - 18:48) Deston took a half-step away from the console, stretching his arms and back, then rubbing his neck with his right hand. "OK, I think I've got the basics. These controls rotate the sample, this is the phase control, this is my patch to the data displays. These down here control the solanogen probes and manipulators, and this is the primary sequencer. I don't have control over the containment field because it's unnecessary. You're 'soooo' trusting." Deston turned to face the Borg drone he'd dubbed 'Captain Helpful'. He raised his arms and held out his quivering hands before the drone's optics. "See my hands? See my legs? I'm shaking because I'm exhausted. I need to take a few minutes to rest, and I need some nourishment. Some water would be a great start. And what do you have for food? Not some disgusting, utilitarian slurry, I hope." ~Though I'd imagine that even that would be welcome, if this takes very much longer. This has been a complete washout! So far, I've seen nothing I can use or do to shut them down, make my escape, or even signal outside this ship... if there's even anyone out there to receive one. Luckily, I seem to have plenty of time, so I'll keep looking.~ (reply Borg) (Posted by John O'Neill) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix Twelve - Staff Sergeant Rodger Hammerstein - 18:48) Staff Sergeant Roger Hammerstein was a grizzled 30 year old marine, he was experienced primarily in infiltration, retrieval and assault, which made him perfect for a member of this away team. Of course he was a decent shot as well, and had multiple offers to be an NCO drill instructor for new recruits, but he was still debating whether that was what he wanted to do. At a time like this, he was wondering if he would rather call a fresh faced 18 year old maggot than wander around a borg ship. But he was a marine, he could manage. Lt Major Stevens paused briefly at a steep slope leading upwards towards a pulsing blue light, reading off information on his TACOM the display showed no moving targets immediately ahead, so together they began the slow assent of the sharp gradient, weapons at the ready just in case something unexpected, or indeed unconventional should occur. "Sir," Hammerstein spoke up, "Looking at the briefing from the Major, I think it is wise to look out for the assimilation snakes." (reply Stevens) (reply Stevens, any) (posted by Will Banowsky) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix Twelve - Lt Major Stevens - 18:49) "Sir", said Hammerstein, "looking at the briefing from the Major, I think it is wise to look out for the assimilation snakes" Stevens frowned a little, then he turned to the Staff Sergeant and nodded. "I think that's probably a wise precaution... Keep an eye out for anything...um", he said pausing now as though unsure of whether 'untoward' was the correct word to use, it probably wasn't, this place was full of 'untowards' anyway. "...anything snakelike", he added before turning his attention to the steep slope once more. (Reply Any, IYW) Once they had reached the top, the source of the blue light became immediately apparent. A rupture had appeared in the side of one of the bulkheads, probably caused when the ship had been flung like a ball by the river when it had thrown a tantrum, and it was now venting charged plasma in a continuous arc across their path. Stevens let out a heavy sigh, then he addressed his team. "Well, it looks as though we are gonna have to find another route to the bridge", he said looking down at his TACOM for relevant information. (Reply Any, IYW) "We can take that corridor and reconnect with our original route fifty two metres north of our current location", said the Lt Major pointing to the relevant corridor as he spoke. (Reply Any) Stevens looked about and then tugged at his collar, the humidity was uncomfortable and the plasma discharge was increasing the temperature even further, it was best they move on now... and quick. "So let's get moving gentlemen", he ordered and then sidestepped around the wall to reach their objective corridor. (Reply Any) (Posted by Alan) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Borg Drone, One of Four - 18:49) With some degree of exhaustion now evident in the Science officer, the Borg drone One of Four assessed that he had finally arrived at some form of an answer, it stepped towards him in response to that. "OK, I think I've got the basics", said Deston before going on to give a half decent explanation of what the Borg already knew! Then he addressed the lead Borg directly with that self same name ' Captain Helpful'... Again, the sarcasm was lost on it's cybernetic heritage. "See my hands? See my legs? I'm shaking because I'm exhausted. I need to take a few minutes to rest, and I need some nourishment", said Deston hopefully. Then he asked for whatever they considered food to be given to him in order that he might complete their task for them. The Borg turned towards an aperture and then after activating a device resembling a replicator, it returned with a small pot of... 'something' and handed it to the hungry man. (Reply Deston) The Borg then returned to the console. Apparently, something was happening elsewhere in the ship and without a word, two of the drones nearby immediately moved off and into the corridor. One of Four, watched as the Human ate. "Yeah, I am in the Officers bunk, but I came in here to get O'Hara to go get a drink. But like O'Hara said, Chief, this aint where we live." “Have either of you seen anything missing or something out of place?”, asked Rock. "Are you suggesting someone came in here, killed Rameriz and then stole property?", he hollered. ~If anything wanted to steal from a Marines Barrack, they would have been the one lying on the floor.~ (Reply Rock) "One - it would take someone highly specialized to take out Rameriz, which would mean another Marine, and Two - there is a code of honour amongst Marine ranks which goes something like this. There body armour could take some punishment but not that kind of punishment and he was glad that they would be going around. Jaret had obviously misjudged the Corporal by the reply he received after asking a very simple question. CPO Rock also took note of the body shifting from O’Hara. Jaret from experience and from training in security had learned that the smallest cues could give the biggest clues. Jaret wasn’t familiar with Ramirez personally but had heard the name a time or two, but he also had heard of a holo-twin of this person. It would of course be something that would be brought up eventually. He thought there were some interesting comments and the unusual tone when O’Hara spoke of the deceased. CPO Rock then thought of how the Marines were having a troubled time with an enlisted member doing the investigation of this death. Unfortunately there wasn’t much that could be done at this time. ~Does this Marine think so small of himself just because of his rank?~ “Can you please explain to me how and where you found Marine Ramirez?”, asked Rock. “No, I am asking have you seen anything missing, something out of place, or something out of the ordinary in this bunk. Until an investigation can be completed it is logical to think anything is a possibility,” Rock stated as straightforward and with a stern tone. "One - it would take someone highly specialized to take out Rameriz, which would mean another Marine, and Two - there is a code of honour amongst Marine ranks which goes something like this. 'No friggin Marine steals off another!'... So forget that right now", said O'Hara as he retook his seat upon his bunk. The emotions of O’Hara were the exact opposite the Corps attempted to teach their men. It was not negative for a Marine to have feelings, but when those emotions are powerful enough for their judgment to be clouded then a problem would sure arise. Jaret attempted to not let O’Hara get under his skin, but it was beginning to get hard. "Besides Chief, most the Marines were busy on notice, we just got back from the Borg ship, another team is about to beam over. Everyone else is waiting to get themselves ready to beam over so it is not like there where any marines available to come in here. Besides even if they had, there would have been a phaser fight, and as a Field Medic, I think I know when someone has been shot, Ramirez wasn't, second, if there was an alarm would have gone off. I hate to say it that the likely conclusion was poison or some other toxin, Chief, but I'm sure a fleeter doc might have more to say on that then a trigger happy marine with a medical tricorder,” chimed in Sykes. Looking to Sykes, “Thank you Lt for your medical opinion, I will of course take your advice and look in to all avenues. Ramirez will be given the highest priority I assure you. We will figure this out….” CPO Rock was interrupted by one of the scene investigation officers before he could finish. She spoke softly in his ear a sentence or two. “Corporal O’Hara and Lt Sykes I am going to ask you please follow Specialist Gora to the Marine briefing room down the hall. I shall be with you again shortly,” Jaret asked but also insisted as he pointed to the young lady that stood beside him. (reply O’Hara, Sykes) (posted by Calvin) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - ACSO, Lt (JG), Carl Deston - 18:51) The Borg, responding to Deston's request for nutrition, returned shortly with a small bowl or pot, which it handed to Deston. Eying it apprehensively, Deston cautiously took it, carefully bringing it into range of his maxillary chemoreceptors and thermoreceptors. It wasn't hot, or cold; it seemed to be about ambient temperature. There was virtually no odor; perhaps a faint, mild twinge of something vaguely like paprika. He opened his eyes; it appeared to be something akin to a thin porridge. Gruel. He dipped his little finger into it, and brought a tiny portion to his tongue. Virtually tasteless, very slightly sour. The faint odor didn't carry over to taste. ~Well... at least it isn't sewage. Just very, very bland. Hope I can get out of here before I get used to this diet.~ As he slowly ate the pot of gruel, Deston noticed that a couple of the Borg drones suddenly left their positions and marched off, leaving the room via the corridor they'd all entered by. Deston was a little curious, but not too much; the Borg were pretty damned inscrutable to anyone outside the collective. ~So. Romulan-Klingon-Oogleboogle hybrid technology. I can manipulate subspace material with it. I have a sample of subspace material to manipulate. My captors 'want' me to manipulate it. How do I use this to my advantage? How can I use it to escape?~ Deston worked his jaws on another mouthful of the bland pap. ~Where can I escape 'to'? I don't even know if my shuttlecraft is on board this heap.~ He considered things for a little while longer. Then... ~I know the decay sequences and interaction products of every particle type found in the sample and in the manipulator fields.~ As he finished up the remains of his meal, Deston reviewed what he knew of the device he'd been allowed access to. He was very much a science generalist; he had little specialized knowledge, apart from the few events he'd been part of while on board the Boudicca. He was probably one of a handful of specialists in the Federation on a race of sentient, telepathic crustaceans, until such time as the permanent Federation envoy established itself; he was about as knowledgeable as anyone on the so-called Planet Killer artifact; and he was now fast becoming a specialist in some of the more arcane aspects of subspace. ~Plus Borg sociology,~ he thought, with a flicker of an internal wry grin. ~Obviously, something I learned about subspace made me a target for them. It can't be what I'm learning about the subspace river now; it has to be something from the Planet Killer event. It generated vast pulses of subspace interference, strong enough to degrade sensing equipment and heavily interfere with communications and transport. We got reams of data from that. But it was just interference, in the end; what could have been so special about it that it would have applications with the river, or this genetic theory the Borg hold so dear?~ (Reply none; more coming) (Posted by John O'Neill) (Borg Vessel - Primary Control - Lt. (jg) Carl Deston - 18:52) After finishing the pot of gruel, Deston stayed sitting for another couple of minutes, savoring the physical relaxation. Then he stood. "All right, Captain Helpful, let's get this show on the road." (reply perplexed Borg) "Yeah, fine, whatever." Deston tried to ignore the creature. Logical to the nth degree, but utterly unlike even the most obdurate Vulcan he had ever met. Becoming Borg was definitely a step down in any thinking being's book. He'd had a lot to think about while he fingered gruel from the container to his mouth. "...Successfully transposed meso-active subspace code across two dissimilar dimensions - assisted in subspace molecular folding experimentation and was successful in fluid containment of resultant matter to nth degree... accessing and activating the final genetic sequence contained within the subspace field you know as 'the river'..." Those opening statements from the Borg, uttered less than an hour ago but seemingly a lifetime ago, contained a lot of clues, once he'd looked over the Borg's data on their sample of the subspace river. The data, and the Borgs' statements, had provided context for each other, and now meaning was starting to form. The fact that they'd managed to obtain a 'physical sample' of subspace was another, major datum - prior to this, Deston had never heard the like. He was more than half convinced that the Borg's bizarre theory that the subspace river was a living creature, wasn't just the insane ravings of a lunatic collective mind. It certainly made for a very intriguing hypothesis. Given even the remotest possibility that the subspace river was alive, Deston could think of no good reason to enable the Borg to assimilate it in any fashion whatsoever. He could not imagine what the process would entail, or what would result from the success of such a process, but it certainly wouldn't be good for any non-Borg species in the universe. He entertained a vague notion of Borg traveling through the galaxy without need for their cubes and spheres, moving faster than any warp-capable craft. It simply did not bear consideration. Carl was going to do his level best to stop them. He doubted he'd live through the process. He stood at the controls of the containment unit. He tentatively ran the device through a basic sampling routine, watching as the rotating bars phased and unphased through the containment field and the gaseous sample within. The data - now completely readable in Federation Standard, though not always comprehensible - scrolled on the overhead monitor and the ancillary monitors. He ran a comparison check between the older data set and the current one, marking the few significant differences. He began talking to Captain Helpful. "The primary obstacle here is that the polyfluidic morscarpium has been rotated into a null-phase state through a rather clumsy use of graviton inversion. Kudos to you for actually getting the basic job done, but while it gave you the sample, it also rendered it refractory to your manipulation attempts." ~Tell the truth... but not the 'whole' truth. And don't limit things to 'nothing but the truth'.~ "First, we're going to need to re-rotate it back into a tertiary manifold vacuole. I assume the containment field here is up to the job of isolating the vacuole, without allowing a rupture into an interfold layer?" (reply Borg) "Great. Beginning dimensional rotation... 'now'." Deston passed his hand over the control, smoothly controlling the gravitational gradient in the container as the sample collapsed into a phase-one state; at the crucial moment, a warp field pulse was spiked through the containment field, and the sample seemed to disappear from normal sight, having successfully transitioned into a phase-three state. Only the instruments showed that the containment field was still containing... 'something'. Deston grinned to himself. ~By Klono, it worked! This is incredible! A whole new chapter in subspace physics is going to be opened, based on this!~ His grin faded as reality caught up to his initial excitement. ~Well... maybe someday.~ He took a deep breath. "Now, from here we have three choices. We're going to start with the easiest one, because if it doesn't work, we'll still have the sample to work with. The other two choices have a strong probability of destroying the viability of the sample if they don't work out." (reply Borg) (Posted by John O'Neill) (Borg Vessel - Unimatrix Twelve – Sgt. Just a nice shovel or phaser rival to the neck and that sucker is dead." Hammerstein said with an attitude that masked his own apprehension. As they moved closer to the light source, Steven made the comment that they would have to find another way to the bridge. That didn't sit well with Hammerstein, he wanted off the damn borg ship. "Which way should we take sir." Hammerstein spoke up with his gung ho ness still showing. "We can take that corridor and reconnect with our original route fifty two metres north of our current location", Both Houseman and Hammerstein looked at the corridor Lt Major Stevens was pointing at. “Yes Sir.” "Rodger that Sir" "So let's get moving gentlemen", The away team followed Lt. Major Stevens as he led them to their detour. "So are we gonna play the body count game or what. Lowest body count has bunk cleaning duties for the next week, whose in?" "I'll tell you what, how about you get bunk cleaning duties for 'two' weeks for even suggesting games at a time like this", he said. (Reply Hammerstein, Any) Stevens exhaled heavily and then returned his attention forwards as he proceeded on. Marine bravado was one thing, but to resort to such tactics now, especially when the situation of Rameriz death was still unsolved was unthinkable. The corp itself was seemingly under suspicion, although why nobody knew. This was a time that they should be sticking together, not drawing bunk cleaning straws in relation to a Borg busting mission. It was all irrelevant now anyway and the Lt Major made it known with a crouch to the floor and a raising of one hand into the air, followed by a number of hand gestures the others knew well. They had just made contact with their foe.... (Reply Hammerstein, Stevens, any) (posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre – Marine Barracks – Security, CPO Jaret Rock – 18:56) After Specialist Gora lead the two Marines out of the bunk and to the Marine briefing room Jaret turned his attention to the crime scene. No matter what way you looked at a scene of death, whether it is a suicide or murder it is always looked upon as a murder first. CPO Rock walked toward the body once again as he thought how the Marine medic had believed foul play could have been at hand due to the fact he spoke of poison as an explanation. He approached the bed and saw the dead Marine without the sheet over the body now. He watched the second specialist climb down from the bed from taking a spectral analysis of Ramirez’s fingers, and other exposed skin. “Report,” Jaret called. Specialist Toron looked up and over at the lead investigation officer Chief Rock. “Nothing out of the ordinary that I have found Chief. There are no scars, burns, or any other physical signs of fighting or violence….externally.” “And internally,” Jaret was intrigued by the Specialist chosen words. “I am not a certified Dr that performs autopsies but this mans insides are either burned to crisp, wilted away slowly, or dissolved within its own acid,” responded Toron. “Self-inflicted or was there a second party,” Jaret asked knowing this was the million gold-pressed latinum question. “Since I have not found any evidence of a vile, cup, or bottle that would hold such a poison I can’t really give you a good opinion,” Toron responded in the neutral as he didn’t want to go on record just yet with an opinion. He then pulled out a body bag from the suit cases, and began to place Ramirez inside of it. “Any kind of liquid or small like substance could have contained a number of poisons with different speeds of effect. He could have taken or given this substance yesterday, two weeks ago, or even just 10 minutes before his last breath. We don’t have enough information. Send him to the autopsy room and put an ASAP on it,” Jaret ordered. Specialist Toron placed a small silver locator on the body bag and tapped his badge. “ID Bag A-82 to autopsy room.” The body bag then transported away. Before Jaret left the bunk to speak with the Marines in the briefing room he took one last glance around the bunk to see if he had missed anything and as he looked he saw a sparkle, a glimmer of something shinny half way underneath the drawer. He walked over to it to examine what he thought could be a clue. “Give me some gloves,” hurried Jaret. The specialist took no time to comply with the Jaret’s request. Rock placed the gloves on and kneeled down. He began to place his hand underneath the drawer and then stopped. “Take a quick picture first.” Once again Toron complied with the request. Jaret finally slipped the shinny object out from underneath the drawer. It was a PADD. As he pulled it out and began to exam the PADD Toron began to shoot video. What Jaret read was impossible and yet probable. It had made Captain T’Vhor a suspect. It is vastly enhanced and upgraded of course, a few of the subcircuits bearing no similarity to any technology I know of" Aldlar sighed and then took another look at the device on the testbed. "I don't know about you, but I'm gonna pass the baton. I can't help much with Borg stuff.", he said dismissively. "That is not an option that is currently open to us", said the Vulcan, "Lieutenant H'Chir has tasked us with the job of finding out precisely it's internal functionality, up to a point where we can go no further.' Aldlar turned and faced the Vulcan again. "I know he asked us, but if there is someone who has better experience with Borg stuff, wouldn't that make them the logical choice? I don't mean to leave it undone, but I'm not much help." "Then I suggest we begin with what we do know and then work backwards from that point. We know that the transceiver is multifunctional and adaptive, the carrier frequencies are apparently able to mimic our own subspace codes, although to what purpose I am unsure.' "And It bears a tiny resemblance to Starfleet and Romulan tech, and is nothing like a toaster." Aldlar couldn't help adding the final part. Maybe in this manner he would find out what all that stuff about the toaster was. "There appears to be a central dedicated core for data storage and encryption. It would be illogical to begin disassembly of this part of the device without proper precautionary measures being in place.... and within a dedicated laboratory that is equipped for such a procedure.' "I guess that's right. A starbase would have the proper tools and facility. And faculty." Aldlar watched as the Vulcan nodded. He was glad his idea was "logical" enough to go through. Though not much of an idea... "A starbase facility indeed." "So, we can tell the lieutenant that we are done and recommend that it gets passed over to a star base? And not get a dent in our reputation?" Aldlar looked at the transciever again. Nothing new came to mind. (Reply Slok, Any) (Posted by John) (USS Spectre - Main Engineering, Cybernetic Testbed One - Ensign Slok - 19:11) The new Ensign had a point, irrespective of how logical or illogical it was. Their task could not be furthered any more than already done so, all avenues had been examined and documented and what they needed now was a dedicated cybernetic lab and not their current situation on a ship that had already taken damage! It was true of course that their brief had been to retrieve the Central plexus for detailed examination, even the CO had expressed that, H'Chir though had seemed keen to pull it apart, probably more as a diversion from other matters, the phased cloak problem for example which had already plagued the CEO to his limits. The truth of the matter was, it had simply been patched and no more amount of patching was going to rectify their current predicament. In short they needed new parts and short of another ship arriving with said parts, what they needed now was a starbase. Two problems would then be solved in one foul swoop. Ensign Slok nodded just once, then he turned his attention to Durgil who offered only one statement. "So, we can tell the lieutenant that we are done and recommend that it gets passed over to a star base? And not get a dent in our reputation?", he said, apparently eager now to get on with something else. "Agreed", said Slok, "it would be both unwise and illogical to continue with our task without proper equipment and the dedicated facilities of a starbase laboratory" (Reply Durgil) Slok shut down the testbed and then secured it, then he moved over to the console displaying current engineering jobs and their priorities. "We should inform Lt H'Chir of the situation regarding the central plexus, then I would suggest that we offer our assistance in whatever department currently prioritized as high.... which I believe would be one of two. The phased cloak or bulkhead repair in the area of the previous discharge which incapacitated two of our engineers beforehand", he added. (Reply Durgil) Slok nodded and then made the call, duly reporting the situation to H'Chir who seemed reluctant, but accepting of the matter before ordering them to... 'use their own initiatives' now in regards where they both felt they needed to be. Slok turned to Durgil with a typical Vulcan expression upon his face, namely an eyebrow raised quizzically. "Do you have a preference Ensign?", he asked. (Reply Durgil, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre – Marine Briefing Room – Security, CPO Jaret Rock – 19:11) Jaret walked into the briefing room which held a table where Marines O’Hara and Sykes sat. He wasn’t for sure what they were thinking, but in the other room they had made their feeling known that they didn’t like an NCO in charge of the investigation. (reply O’Hara, Sykes, iyw) CPO Rock placed the PADD down onto the table and he took a seat in the chair. He tapped a few buttons on the PADD and looked at the Marines. “I appreciate your cooperation up to this point. I have a few more questions, and then you will be free to go about your normal lives.” (reply O’Hara, Sykes, iyw) “Although we haven’t ruled out any possibilities we will be running this incident as a murder until any evidence says other wise. Have either of you noticed any difference in Ramirez’s personality or behavior?” (reply O’Hara, Sykes,) “Did he speak of anything unusual or did he mention about any kind of trouble he might have been in?” (reply O’Hara, Sykes,) “Are you aware of anyone that holds any kind of grudge of any sorts that may want Ramirez hurt or in this case dead?” (reply O’Hara, Sykes) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre - Main Engineering, Cybernetic Testbed One - Ensign Durgil - 19:12) 'Agreed, it would be both unwise and illogical to continue with our task without proper equipment and the dedicated facilities of a starbase laboratory.' The phased cloak or bulkhead repair in the area of the previous discharge which incapacitated two of our engineers beforehand.' Aldlar nodded in response. "I'm not going to suggest either until it's ok-ed by H'chir." Aldlar watched as the Vulcan reported to H'chir. The "Use your own initiatives" part sounded promising. Aldlar smiled. Finally, a chance at something he knew about! "I know that the phased cloak isn't a mainstream technology, so I think the bulkhead would be a better job for me at the moment. Maybe you could brief me more on the cloak while working on the bulkhead, If that job is alright with you." (Reply Slok, any) (Posted by:John) (USS Spectre - Main Engineering, Cybernetic Testbed One - ACEO Ensign Slok - 19:13) The Vulcan closed the comm and then pursed his lips, contemplating the Chiefs last words. Use your initiatives!!! If Slok was'nt mistaken, the Andorian was acting a little strange of late, who was he though to second guess his superiors decisions, if H'Chir wanted them to 'use their initiatives', then so be it. Durgil at least seemed somewhat relieved by it all anyway, obviously not being particularly au fais with Borg long range communication and control equipment. "I know that the phased cloak isn't a mainstream technology, so I think the bulkhead would be a better job for me at the moment. Maybe you could brief me more on the cloak while working on the bulkhead, If that job is alright with you", said Ensign Durgil. Slok nodded. "The job is indeed acceptable", said Slok, "my own opinion on the phase cloak however is much the same as the one regarding our central plexus...... in order to complete the task to a satisfactory level, we need the proper facilities of a starbase equipped with repair facilities" (Reply Durgil) Slok accessed a nearby console to assess the current state of affairs with the bulkhead repairs. It seemed that the exterior hull plating had been investigated by Lt Adams and Ensign Talbot approximately four hours beforehand, and that they had observed some curious electromagnetic effects during their EVA that had resulted in both being returned to sickbay... unconscious. "It would seem that all EVA excursions are currently off limits by order of the Captain, are repairs will therefore be limited to internal work only", said Slok. (Reply Durgil) "Section forty nine alpha is currently listed as under forcefielded enhancement pending internal repairs, I suggest that we 'use our initiative' in that location", said Slok with a typical raising of an eyebrow. Here they go and use a special piece of technology... and nobody on the ship can fix it? And a technology that could mean life or death of the crew too... Aldlar shook off the sense of foreboding he had gotten. "Well, I guess we should get to work then." 'It would seem that all EVA excursions are currently off limits by order of the Captain, are repairs will therefore be limited to internal work only' "Well I guess that is alright. How far exactly does the damage go? I arrived after the incident, so I reall don't know." (Reply, Slok) After reciving the reply, he quickly left to grab some repair kits and such tools as they would need. 'Section forty nine alpha is currently listed as under forcefielded enhancement pending internal repairs, I suggest that we 'use our initiative' in that location' Aldlar noted the vulcan expression. He wondered why they do that, as it kinda had a creepy effect, but he shook it off. "Well then, by all means, lets get to it!" Aldlar couldn't keep the gladness out of his voice. Finally, something he could do! (Reply, Slok, any) (Posted by: John) (USS Spectre – Marine Briefing Room – Lt Sykes – 19:13) Robert was patiently waiting for the Chief to come in and question them. He much rather the investigation be led by Marines. It bothered him that the fleeters send down an Chief Petty Officer to do the investigation. ~Are we so low on the totem pole they couldn't send an Ensign.~ CPO Rock placed the PADD down onto the table and he took a seat in the chair. He tapped a few buttons on the PADD and looked at the Marines. “I appreciate your cooperation up to this point. I have a few more questions, and then you will be free to go about your normal lives.” "Fire away" Sykes said not hiding his annoyance with the situation. (Reply O'Hara iyw) “Although we haven’t ruled out any possibilities we will be running this incident as a murder until any evidence says other wise. Have either of you noticed any difference in Ramirez’s personality or behavior?” "Not really, the guy was always a bit out there, but I don't know." was Robert's reply. (reply O'Hara) “Did he speak of anything unusual or did he mention about any kind of trouble he might have been in?” "I don't know, he spoke a lot of Spanish, I don't speak Spanish." Robert didn't really have an answer. (Reply O'Hara) “Are you aware of anyone that holds any kind of grudge of any sorts that may want Ramirez hurt or in this case dead?” "Not amongst the marines, no." (Reply O'Hara) (reply O'Hara, Rock) (posted by Will Banowsky) (USS Spectre – Marine Briefing Room – Corporal Lewis O'Hara – 19:13) O'Hara and Sykes both sat patiently whilst awaiting the arrival of CPO Rock, the questions were obviously still hanging heavy in the air and the finger of suspicion seemed to be pointing now at a fellow Marine! It was unheard of of course, Marines fought the enemy and no marine ever considered another in his platoon to be an enemy. Rock would just have to look elsewhere for his culprit. It was then though that the man appeared and began, seemingly without even taking a breath. “I appreciate your cooperation up to this point. I have a few more questions, and then you will be free to go about your normal lives.”, he said. "Fire away", said Sykes. O'Hara just shook his head in disapproval, if there was indeed a murderer on the boat, then Rock should be out there looking for him, not in the marine barracks. “Although we haven’t ruled out any possibilities we will be running this incident as a murder until any evidence says other wise. Have either of you noticed any difference in Ramirez’s personality or behavior?” "Not really, the guy was always a bit out there, but I don't know.", said Sykes. O'Hara however wasn't quite sure what he had just heard. "Are you serious... you think someone actually murdered Rameriz?", he exclaimed. Rock seemed to ignore O'Hara's remark and immediately fired off another question, much to Lewis's chagrain. “Did he speak of anything unusual or did he mention about any kind of trouble he might have been in?” "I don't know, he spoke a lot of Spanish, I don't speak Spanish", said Sykes. "He spoke a lot of jibberish", said Lewis, "a language I am thankfully not particularly fluent in" “Are you aware of anyone that holds any kind of grudge of any sorts that may want Ramirez hurt or in this case dead?”, asked Rock, once again apparently disregarding O'Hara's attempts at sidelining the proceedings. "Not amongst the marines, no", said Sykes, whilst Lewis scratched his head. I arrived after the incident, so I really don't know", inquired Durgil. Slok quirked his head slightly and then began walking towards the equipment lockers. "Apparently, the damage spans three decks, although we are as yet unable to ascertain the cause of the damage", said Slok as Durgil joined him and delved into the locker to begin retrieving tools he envisaged they would need. "Section forty nine alpha is currently listed as under forcefielded enhancement pending internal repairs, I suggest that we 'use our initiative' in that location", said Slok defaulting to the most needy area in regards the bulkhead repairs. "Well then, by all means, lets get to it!", said Ensign Durgil enthused now at the task availed to him as he moved on out of Engineering and then into the corridor, leaving a somewhat bewildered looking Slok to follow. "Chop chop", said another crewman standing nearby, he looks as though he's in a hurry" "Clearly, Mr Durgil is more enthused by crumbling bulkheads than he is Borg technology", said Slok as he picked up his own tools and then entered the corridor also. (Reply Any, None) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre – Marine Briefing Room – Security, CPO Jaret Rock – 19:16) "Yeah, there was one guy that might fit that bill", said O'Hara with a smirk, "that dumbass twin of his" The response intrigued Jaret. CPO Rock fairly knew that Ramirez’s special circumstance of a hologram made after him might come up within the investigation. Jaret didn’t know the relationship exactly between the two so he decided to get as much information as possible. “Can you explain what you mean, why does he fit the bill?” asked Rock. (reply O’Hara) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre – Marine Briefing Room – Corporal Lewis O'Hara – 19:17) Well, that had certainly intrigued the Chief no end, one could have been forgiven for thinking him Vulcan even. “Can you explain what you mean, why does he fit the bill?” he asked. O'Hara huffed and then settled back into the chair he now occupied. "They damn well hated one another, when the light twin was active they were like Punch and Judy on steroids", said the Corporal. "Always trying to outdo one another, always bitching and arguing" (Reply Rock) "Holomatter or not, you asked who might want to hurt Rameriz, that's the only guy I know that would", said O'Hara.... "Always trying to outdo one another, always bitching and arguing,” argued O’Hara. “Do you really think that a holo would have the programming to kill?” asked Rock not for sure on the statistics of such an incident. "Holomatter or not, you asked who might want to hurt Ramirez, that's the only guy I know that would", said O'Hara.... "Well, apart from the CO of course who had grown accustomed to hauling the guys ass into the Brig on more than one occasion" O’Hara just hit a keyword. The Commanding Officer meaning Captain T’Vhor. The PADD had proved that the CO’s command codes had been used to deactivate the holograms. Could it possibly have been a ‘double murder’, or did Ramirez holograph help and then was deactivated afterward. Rock couldn’t believe that he was thinking what he was pondering. It bothered him even considering the CO as a killer, but as of now the evidence showed it. Rock turned his attention away from the PADD and back to the Marines in on the other side of the table. “Is there anything else you would like to add?” he asked both of them. (reply O’Hara, Sykes) “If anything comes up that you believe will help or clear anything up please contact me immediately. (Reply Sykes, IYW) CPO Rock then nodded and stood, his mind obviously going over what the marines had told him, he seemed furtive about something, as though perhaps formulating an answer to the riddle that was Rameriz's death. “If anything comes up that you believe will help or clear anything up please contact me immediately. Again thank you for your cooperation", said Rock as he picked up his PADD and left the room. (Reply Sykes, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Deck Nine, Section Forty Nine Alpha - ACEO, Ensign Slok - 19:21) Upon arriving in the designated area, Slok placed his tool box onto the floor and then moved to visibly survey the damage on the interior hull. Apparently, whatever had caused the surge that had incapacitated the two crewman earlier, had actually penetrated the few feet beyond the hull plating so as to scorch the inner walls. "This does not look good", said Slok, pausing as he contemplated the best course of action. (Reply Durgil) "Ideally, what is needed here is a complete replacement of the section, although that is not possible under current conditions of course. However, with the forcefield in place, structural integrity is maintained at a safe level, providing we do not go to warp", said Slok. (Reply Durgil) The Vulcan nodded and then returned to his tools to retrieve a diagnostic tool from within it, he then activated it and passed it repeatedly over various points on the bulkhead. "There are micro-residual remnants here, although it is nothing like I have ever seen", said Slok. (Reply Durgil) The Vulcan turned to the new Engineer, the trademark rise of an eyebrow evident as he did so. "It appears to be... organic in nature", said Slok. (Reply Durgil, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Deck Nine, Section Forty Nine Alpha - Ensign Durgil - 19:21) Aldlar looked with skepticism at the Vulcan. "So, some equipment explodes and you think it's bad?" Aldlar didn't understand the point. It was something only experience could tell. He began to look around at the mangled bulkheads, ripped apart by stress of some sort or another. "So, where do we start?" 'Ideally, what is needed here is a complete replacement of the section, although that is not possible under current conditions of course. However, with the forcefield in place, structural integrity is maintained at a safe level, providing we do not go to warp.' "So, other than diagnostics, what can we do?" Aldlar watched as Slok pulled out a tool. He didn't even need a response. ~Yup... Is that all there is to this job? ~ 'There are micro-residual remnants here, although it is nothing like I have ever seen.' "Wait a minute. Remnants of what? Please don't tell me it's organic..." In a light whisper Aldlar spoke to himself. "Why can't there be any simple mechanical problems?" 'It appears to be... organic in nature.' "I knew it. Why can't anything normal happen? A simple asteroid would've worked but no, it has to be..." Aldlar stopped short. What would the Vulcan think of this illogical train of thought. Aldlar sighed. "Sorry, I let my imagination get ahead of me. So, some giant alien life-form has bumped this part of the ship off huh?" (Reply, Slok) Aldlar looked back at the broken edges of metal. His minde went back to what the report that he had read some of over Slok's shoulder. "Didn't that report say soemthing about strange EM stuff and two unconcious crew members? Any connection with the organic stuff?" (Reply, Slok, Any) (Posted by: John) (USS Spectre - Deck Nine, Section Forty Nine Alpha - Ensign Durgil - 19:22) "Curious? A detached limb doesn't show any life signs. It becomes just another grouping of organic matter." Aldlar knew it wasn't really his area to decide whether there was a life form or not, but if it came to a point where it risked lives (Especially his own) it became his area. 'I suggest that we dispense with analysis and simply.... repair what we can, that is after all what we have come here to do' "Your right...." Aldlar opened his tool kit, pausing a couple of seconds. "What area should I begin repairing first?" (Reply, Slok) After receiving a response, he grabbed the proper tools for the job and got to work, keeping silent though analyzing the situation in his mind. He was exhausted it had been a long day and from the feeling he was getting it had not stopped yet. He lifted the cup of caffeine off his desk and took a sip. He lay back into the chair feeling the caffeine begin to flow through his system. He took a big sigh and looked at the PADD that continued Calvin Capps’s medical report. They had spent the last while operating on him to get all the nano probes from his body. It had been a long tiring job as those little devils had spread all across his body. They were slowly reducing the anaesthesia and all he could do now was to wait and see how Calvin would recover. A scream deafening in the quiet of sickbay reverberated around him and before it had finished he had bolted out of his chair knocking his cup over and charged into sickbay all feelings of tiredness gone. As he entered main sickbay he saw Douwsy hurrying over to Capps who was lying on a bio-bed where he was recovering from his operation. He dashed over to Capps as he looked at Capps’s vitals which were beginning to go erratic. ~What the hell is happening? This should not be happening~ “Andrew look?” Andrew turned to Douwsy who was looking at Capps as he looked down at Capps he could see that his face had turned an unhealthy shade of grey. “No, we got them all where did they come from.” He stabbed at the sensors control of the bio-bed and watched as the sensors did a rapid scan. He watched the images appeared on the screen beside him. “No not there. Okay go deeper.” He looked again and saw what he was looking for. ~Ow god they are in his brain~ He looked at Douwsy. “Quick get me the ‘micro fib’ I need to fry the little biters.” Douwsy gave him a look as she ran to get it. She came back with the equipment in her hand. “But Andrew it is in his brain. Get it wrong and you will fry his brain.” Andrew nodded as he placed the small pads on Capps head. ~Ow this could go really nasty. If I get it wrong~ “Well I better not get it wrong shall I. You got any better ideas? If we don’t stop them now he will be assimilated in minutes.” He tapped a command in to the bio-bed control. “Okay it is set to level one. Firing now.” He looked over at Douwsy who was looking at the brain scans. “No change Andrew.” ~Damn~ “Okay setting for level two.” He fired and then looked over at Douwsy who shook her head. “Still no change Andrew.” “Setting for level three.” He fired again but Douwsy said that there was no change. “Setting for level four.” “Andrew any higher and we could kill him.” Andrew looked at Douwsy “Any longer and he will be dead any way.” He pressed the firing button and quickly looked over at Douwsy as the bio-bed alarms sounded. “You have got the nanos but we just lost neuro function.” ~Damn~ He grabbed the neuro stimulator off the trolley and attached it to Capps’s head. “Okay firing.” ~Come on. Come on~ There was a long pause until Douwsy looked over at him. “We have good neuro patterns.” Andrew shut his eyes for a moment in relief. He then looked over at the monitors and realised that Capps was alive and not going to be assimilated. He looked over to Douwsy. “Put up an IV I want to flush out the nanos from his system.” Douwsy nodded as she went away to get the IV. Andrew took a hypospray from the medical trolley and injected it into Capps neck. He looked up as Douwsy came back. “I’ve given him some more sedatives. He should come round about 21:00 hrs.” Knowing that Capps was under Douwys’s care he went back to his officer and began his report. He tried to shake the seering pain away, but nothing was working. His thoughts began to burn away. “Okay it is set to level one. Firing now,” said the doctor. Capps’ brain delved deeper into lifelessness. “No change Andrew,” reported the nurse. “Okay setting for level two,” Dr Williams informed everyone. “Still no change Andrew,” the nurse said again. “Setting for level three.” No change, except Calvin was completely out. His brain had no function anymore. “Andrew any higher and we could kill him,” the nurse said surprisingly. “Any longer and he will be dead any way,” Dr Williams insisted as he fired again. “You have got the nanos but we just lost neuro function.” Williams grabbed the neuro stimulator off the trolley and attached it to Capps’s head. “Okay firing.” There was a long pause until Douwsy looked over at him. “We have good neuro patterns.” Calvin couldn’t comprehend what was going on exactly but he felt power returning to his brain, and he felt his eyes roll forward to the correct position underneath his eyelids. I have triple checked the scans but there is definitely no evidence of any nanos in his system." Andrew nodded. "Okay lets wake him up then." He took a hypospray from the medical trolley and inserted a cartridge. He quickly dialled in the correct dose and injected it into Capps' neck. He stepped back and watched Capps and the monitors and the drug took effect. ~Okay I think you are nearly there. (Reply Andrew) "Because no offense, there is nothing quite like fresh planetary air, and non replicated food. Just relaxing under a real sun, with a real breeze, it is very very relaxing." (reply Andrew) "Of course maybe I am saying that because I haven't been back to Earth in two years and because I never seem to get a chance to take my shore leave there." (reply Andrew) "But yeah, a starship is nice, but always makes me wonder about the old days, back in the days of naval ships and sailing, what it was like to navigate around the globe, with the wind at your sails, no systems to keep you navigated, no warp drive, replicators, or sonic showers. I mean, I've used holo programs, but it just isn't the same as our forefathers. Or exploration ancestors if you will." That is my idea of relaxing and taking it easy.” "Of course maybe I am saying that because I haven't been back to Earth in two years and because I never seem to get a chance to take my shore leave there." A pretty healthy bite. "Yeah, of course, we have already done that right, I mean didn't we just swipe a Borg Central Plexus. But as much as I love that kind of stuff, I wish there was more chance for exploration. What was it that Captain Kirk once said, to seek out new lifes and new civilizations." "So is that why you joined starfleet to see new things and explore new civilisations?" "Honestly Andrew, I can't remember why I joined Starfleet. Things change, but I think just the thrill of cruising through space, and I guess exploration, but after the Civil War, I kinda forgot why I joined. I just know why I stayed." Samhan - 21:55) George entered the Mess Hall, which was filled with about twentyish people, something he liked to see. As he returned to his room after discovering the cure for a flu-like virus, he remembered that it was about six, and the Mess Hall would probably be full. And he wasn't immediately hungry. So, to beat the hoi nautoi, he had sat in his room reading through case profiles so he would have a better understanding in case something came up. After three hours of being sucked into the strange and neurotic world of space exploration, he heard the faint rumblings of his tummy, and had arrived. He eyed the few people eating far too late as he approached the chef. "What do you have quick and ready to go?" He asked with a smile. "Shreaded beef and some bread? Otherwise you'll have to wait a bit." George wasn't about to use a replicator, and he wasn't about to be patient either, he sighed and made his order, "I'll take it." The chef handed him his dinner, he thanked him, and eyed the people in the mess hall. Two tables in front of him, the FO and a Lieutenant Commander stuck out. He had remembered the FO from when they worked together to cure the virus, and he supposed it was best to associate with the higher ups first, before talking to anyone else. He walked up to the table as Will said something about the holodeck, though he didn't catch much of any of it. As there was a brief pause George butted in, "mind if I sit here?" (Reply Banowsky, Williams) And he sat down. (Reply Banowsky, Williams, Any) (Posted by Tim) (USS Spectre - Mess Hall - FO, Williams - 21:56) "Honestly Andrew, I can't remember why I joined Starfleet. Andrew nodded again. “To challenge your self against the unknown and to emerge wiser is never an easy task.” "Of course easy access to a Holodeck isn't bad either." Andrew grinned. “Yeh that to.” "Mind if I sit here?" Andrew looked up to see Samhan standing beside them with a plate of food in his hand. Yes, Of course grab a seat.” Andrew watched as Samhan sat down. He looked at what the counselor had ordered. “So what are you having this evening?” (Reply Samhan) “We were talking about why we joined star fleet. Without saying anything else, he immediately got to the business of eating. “So what are you having this evening?” George turned to see Andrew looking at his meal. "Oh, not much. Just some shredded beef roast, and bread. Don't want to have too much, busy and anxious day, you know. It was what they had on short notice. Can't stand replicators, and I didn't have the patience to wait on the chef." He faintly smiled, then returned to wolfing down his dinner. “We were talking about why we joined star fleet. I had my own practice, but that didn't work out. Since I needed a return on my investment I thought I'd join Star Fleet. After all, there are worse vocations. How about yourself? If you don't mind me asking?" George then noticed Will across the table from him again and said, "Unless you've already talked about it? Has the Lieutenant Commander already spoken?" "Yes I have, but it is alright. I went to college four years, played football, did fun stuff, then all of a sudden decided hey what the hell do I really want to do with my life. So I decided, I know, Starfleet. Granted I came from a Starfleet family, so it made it easy. But I don't know, I can't remember the exact reason I went to Starfleet." George nodded, "Sometimes it's hard to pin down why we make tough life decisions. A lot of factors may be at play. You'd be surprised at how rare a moment of epiphany is. I mean, a moment of epiphany that can be traced to something someone said, or an experience. Some of us just do things without figuring out why." "Now tell me ensign, how does it feel to be one of the oldest ensigns on the ship." George stopped, shocked at the question. He thought it was incredibly rude, but didn't know how to react. If it was any normal person, in any normal situation, he'd rant impotently. But this was a Lieutenant Commander, with the First Officer right next to him. But he didn't want his seniority mocked, just because things didn't work out for him in another profession. "Uh, well I, sir..." George smiled, he was getting some respect. "Well, I hope in the future you would respect your elders, you hooligan." He laughed, even if no one else would follow along, "To be honest with you, I would prefer to go by Doctor, I earned my degree more than I earned my rank." He went back to his food. "Very well then Doctor Samhan, just wanted to be sure." Will then paused as he noticed a Chief Petty Officer approach the First Officer and asked him to speak privately. Will was intrigued. But it wasn't a matter for him. Not yet anyways. Will then turned back to Samhan. "So Doctor where did you practice before you joined starfleet?" (reply Samhan) "Now a little disclaimer, last Counselor I went to, I asked out, but no worries, she was quite a bit younger and cuter than you. I don't think we will have a problem." Will paused a bit, hoping Samhan would know he was joking. (reply Samhan) (reply Samhan, any) (posted by Will Banowsky) (USS Spectre – Mess Hall – Security, CPO Jaret Rock – 22:05) Jaret walked into the Mess Hall with a mission. The mission was something that he had never done in the 20 years he served in Starfleet. Unfortunately this would only be phase one of the mission. The second phase just may end with Jaret and the FO arresting Captain T’Vhor. A server approached Jaret and he quickly asked the server if she had seen Commander Williams. She pointed in a direction behind her to a table with Commander Williams and two other officers. Jaret hated the thought of interrupting the FO’s free time, but he believed this instance was important enough to do so. Jaret walked over to the table and quickly stood into attention and snapped his feet so that his presence may be known. “Commander Williams, may I have a word with you.” (reply Williams) CPO Rock raised his hand to his forehead to salute to the officers as Williams turned around to see who was talking to him. “It is about a high priority security issue and I wish to only speak with you about it sir,” Jaret tried to explain without stepping over his bounds. He hoped Williams would trust him. (reply Williams) “May we speak some where more privately?” Jaret made sure he formed the request in question format. (reply Williams) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre – Mess Hall – FO, Williams – 22:06) “Commander Williams, may I have a word with you.” Andrew looked up from his meal and saw Chief Rock was standing in front of him. “Yes Chief. What can I do for you.” “It is about a high priority security issue and I wish to only speak with you about it sir,” “Of course Chief.” “May we speak some where more privately?” Andrew nodded and looked at Banowsky and Samhan. “If you will excuse me.” Andrew got up from the table and moved to place where they would not be over heard. He looked at Rock. “Okay what can I do for you?” (Reply Rock, any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre – Mess Hall – Security, CPO Jaret Rock – 22:07) “Okay what can I do for you?” asked the First Officer. Rock took the PADD he had been carrying and handed it over to the FO. “I am investigating a possible murder in the Marine barracks of marine officer Ramirez. This PADD shows that Captain T’Vhor’s command code was used inside of the room of Ramirez’s bunk shortly before his death.” (reply Williams) “I believe it is important for us to meet with the Captain as soon as possible sir.” (reply Williams) (posted by Calvin) (USS Spectre – Mess Hall – FO, Williams – 22:09) “I am investigating a possible murder in the Marine barracks of marine officer Ramirez. This PADD shows that Captain T’Vhor’s command code was used inside of the room of Ramirez’s bunk shortly before his death.” Andrew paused at Rocks words as he took the PADD. He quickly read the PADD he frowned as he did so. ~This is the Captain you are talking about. He had nothing to do with this~ “Okay Chief? What is your next step?” “I believe it is important for us to meet with the Captain as soon as possible sir.” Andrew looked at Rock keeping his face controlled and not giving any hints of what he was thinking. ~It can’t be the Captain. This is preposterous~ “Are you implying that the Captain my have something to do with this Chief?” (Reply Rock) “What was the Captain’s command codes used for.” (Reply Rock) “What did marine officer Ramirez die of?” (Reply Rock) Andrew had met Ramirez a couple of time. He was an annoying individual but even so this was no way to go. “Are there any suspects in your investigation?” (Reply Rock) (Reply Rock) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre – Mess Hall – Security, CPO Jaret Rock – 22:10) “Are you implying that the Captain my have something to do with this Chief?” asked the First Officer. “I understand that we may not want to believe that it is possible, but yes sir. The facts clearly point out that his command codes were used. I am sure there can be an explanation but without talking with the Captain T’Vhor I have to believe what the evidence is showing not what I want to believe.” “What was the Captain’s command codes used for?” Williams continued to get the whole story. “They were used to deactivate all holographic personnel. Which in this case I believe it was to deactivate Ramirez’s holographic twin. I am not sure what happened in that room, but it could be that Ramirez’s holograph helped kill Ramirez and then was deactivated by the Captain.” “What did marine officer Ramirez die of?” Williams asked. “I spoke with the Dr on the way up here. The official report will have died from a poison liquid which killed off his insides. The recent virus has been eliminated out of the picture,” explained Rock with a straight face. “My two suspects are Captain T’Vhor and it was hard for me to believe this myself but I am also naming Rameriz’s holograph as a suspect. They could have worked together, or CO wanted them both dead, or in a series of twisted events Captain T’Vhor just came out on top of it all.” (reply Williams) (posted by Calvin) =========================================================================
