Let's catch our Marlin.", said Warwick, causing the Vulcan hybrid CO to raise an eyebrow at the appropriate fishing reference. An attempt to put him at ease perhaps? Possibly, but right now the Captain was more at ease than he had been in a while anyway. Looking back to Kerge at the Tactical console, he noted the brief nod from the Klingon, and then returned to the forwards viewscreen. "Fire when ready", ordered the Captain, and the torpedo was quickly away. After a second or two, the pulse of light the torpedo created became visible as a repeating, but broken pattern which deviated slightly as it began acquiring possible contacts. Sometimes it would quickly return again to a previous course as the sensor returns showed negative on the consoles. Then it would acquire again, this time heading deeper into the asteroid field until it was no longer in sight. At this point the Captain turned his attention to Warwick. "Keep a close eye on those returns Lieutenant Commander. The first good bite you see, begin running spectral analysis. Anything resembling Duranium or Tritanium will be of special interest as I'm sure you will be aware. As will any tachyon pulses of course" (Reply Warwick) "If the Spectre is rigged for silent running, this might take a little time", said T'Vhor, settling back then into his seat and wondering just how much time that might be... (Reply Warwick, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Rome - Bridge - Strategic Officer, Lieutenant Commander Jonathan Warwick - 20:07) Lt. Cmdr. Warwick sat at his station preparing the console to receive the information that would shortly be pouring in to the computer. He swiveled to the center of bridge to look at the Captain. "Fire when ready", ordered the Captain. Jonathan mentally prepared himself. He had said that this is what he was good at. He knew that it was imperative for him to prove that he was the officer for the job. "Keep a close eye on those returns Lieutenant Commander. The first good bite you see, begin running spectral analysis. Anything resembling Duranium or Tritanium will be of special interest as I'm sure you will be aware. As will any tachyon pulses of course" "Aye sir." The Lt. Cmdr. turned his attention back to his console. Sure enough, data began to populate on his screen. He began the pain staking duty of reading through hundreds of data points. Sure, the computer filtered out clearly non-important information, but the rest was left up to the officer. This was the expertise of Jonathan. He was the only one aware of his secret. He had never told anyone how he finds a needle in haystack in data streams. Mostly because he didn't exactly know how he does it. His body, as it was doing now, basically stopped all movement; his breathing slowed to the point it looked as if he was no longer breathing; his eyes were steady and starred at the screen with little to no blinking; his mind pushed all other sensory data away: sound, touch, taste, smell all disappeared; the only thing Lt. Cmdr. Warwick's brain was focused on was the numbers that was flashing before his eyes. The data, although moving at a quick pace on the screen, moved slowly in Jonathan's memory. The data was stored momentarily, but extremely efficiently. With each new screen of data that appeared Jonathan was able to cross reference the data from his memory from all the previous screens of data without needing to reference the computer again. This was his grand achievement. This was his secret that he would tell no one. This is what made him special, unique, and most importantly useful. Funny enough, this is the very thing that also made him insecure about himself. He knew if it wasn't for this power, he wouldn't be any better than others. He had to play this ability up. He had to parade it to make himself noticeable. He knew that he sometimes got under the skin of others. It wasn't something he wanted to do. He wanted his social life to be normal. But his career was equally important to him, and he long ago chose to stand out as an excellent officer. These choices made him who he is today, and who he is today, he thought, was a great officer of Starfleet. (reply none, any) (posted by Calvin Capps) (USS Spectre - Jefferies Tube - TAC/ASC, Ensign (JG) Garek Darpeg - 20:16) The Lieutenant came up and crouched down beside Darpeg and gave an informal greeting, which was designed to put him at ease near this unknown device. He had settled into a combination of Vulcan logic and Klingon fatalism. He could also tell that he was a very fastidious dresser and would not tolerate any dirt anywhere near him. Possibly he was a germaphobe. After he used a padd to access the ship's roster, he also learned the officer's name using facial recognition. He then said, "Greetings, Lieutenant Bates." "So, what have we got here?", asked Bates, examining the device a little more closely now. Darpeg repeated the information the information that he had given Fairfield and he then gave out further information, "I have noticed that the sphere glows for three point two seconds every 41.4 seconds, and during that time, the radiation increases. The radiation also increases if I try to get any closer." (Reply Alan) (Posted by Darpeg) (USS Rome – Sickbay - CMO, Lt Cmdr Andrew Williams - 20:20) Andre had decided to go back to sickbay for a while. Especially as it would take some time for the torpedo to hopeful find the Spectre. Also, the Rome’s bridge was small and although the away team was not many most of them were squashed in there. So he was now pottering around the tiny sickbay calibrating and testing the equipment. He did not want to have to use it but in case it was needed he would make sure it was ready. He paused and smiled to himself as he looked around slowly. “With a few changes, here and there this so could be the Hepburn.” He muttered to himself. The Hepburn was an old defiant class star ship which had been sold off and refitted as a deep space rescue vessel. It was his first space going job after leaving home and he had loved the months he had been on board. The senior zero-g rescue specialist was the first person he had had a crush on. She had him a young zero-g rescue teck following her around like a lost puppy. But she had been patient and kind helping him in his zero-g rescue qualifications while he had been on board. He paused for a moment where she was now. The last time he had seen her was when he had gone to the academy for medical training. He guessed that she was flying around in zero-g like she was board in it. He pulled his thoughts together as he pulled the smile off his face. It would not be good caught grinning vacantly into space while on duty the crew would think he was any crazier then he already was. (reply any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre - Jefferies Tube - ACEO, Lt Norman Bates - 20:25) "I have noticed that the sphere glows for three point two seconds every 41.4 seconds, and during that time, the radiation increases. The radiation also increases if I try to get any closer." said Darpeg, leading Bates to query whether there might possibly be a heat trigger involved to protect the device. "Interesting", he said, rubbing at his chin now as he contemplated that. Then he began quizzing the ships computer, which was thankfully still in operation apart from a few database glitches here and there. "Computer, analyse the anomalous device at my location. Look for energy tie ins and extrapolate the likelihood that a containment field might interfere with those tie ins", said Bates. [[Analysing. The device is of Duranium construction operating in the theta waveband. It's emanations are Thorium based, peaking at 1,2 Terrawatts in an off-phase reciprocating field. There are two energy tie ins. One will likely be triggered if a containment field is placed]] Bates furrowed his brow and then looked to Darpeg. "Umm, not good", he said, "we need to contain this thing before we beam it", he added. "That is, IF we beam it" (Reply Darpeg, IYW) Bates queried the Computer once again. "Computer. Extrapolate any code running on the device, and if any is found and readable, download it to my PADD" [[Analysing. Code is 74% read only]] Bates grunted at that, and then realising that he had done so, smiled at Darpeg, his awkwardness returning somewhat as it invariably did whenever he was in the company of others. Even after so long aboard the Spectre, Bates was still considered a misunderstood oddity... "Computer. Isolate the readable code and attempt analysis with the aim of extrapolating the likely unreadable code" [[Accessing readable code. Running simulations. Extrapolating missing code at a 65% likelihood of error]] "That'll be fine", said Bates. "Send it to my PADD when ready. Bates then settled back against the bulkhead, conveniently away from the device as he began scrutinising the received data, nodding appropriately as he did so. (Reply Darpeg) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Jefferies Tube - TAC/ASC Ensign (jg) Garek Darpeg - 20:30) Darpeg had been listening to Bates's conversation with the computer and the Lieutenant mentioned that he might have the device beamed out, but the device had thermal enhancers. Of course, everyone wanted to eliminate or reduce the damage potential of the device. However, his holoreporter mother had taught him a few concepts. Darpeg then said, "Sir, if we use portable holoemitters in this jefferies tube, we might be able to generate a holographic crewman to use transporter enhancers around the device and beam it out into space harmlessly. After all, photonic personnel do not generate heat and do not register as lifeforms on scans. "However, there are some sensors that detect certain holographic algorhythms." (Reply Bates) Bates then began running simulations on the computer. The Klingon/Vulcan notices that the Human was displaying a nervous smile. Highly illogical, but Humans had all sorts o nervous habits. Darpeg waited for Bates to finish analyzing the computer code of the Ferengi device. (Reply Bates) (Posted by Gary) (USS Spectre - Jefferies Tube - ACEO, Lt Norman Bates - 20:32) "Sir, if we use portable holoemitters in this jefferies tube, we might be able to generate a holographic crewman to use transporter enhancers around the device and beam it out into space harmlessly. After all, photonic personnel do not generate heat and do not register as lifeforms on scans. "However, there are some sensors that detect certain holographic algorithms." Bates paused then and contemplated the Ensign's idea. Whilst essentially sound, it did have one flaw in that Darpeg had yet to meet the Holographic Marine, Rameriz, who had somewhat a reputation for messing things up. Bates shuddered at the thought as he remembered the time that Rameriz had part destroyed a containment vessel during a disagreement with another Marine that had resulted in the Holo-marine switching himself off during one of Bate's experiments. The resultant interference pattern that he had generated had taken hours of work to get to the bottom of just what had happened, and as a result of that, Bates was not comfortable around Holographic crewmen anymore. He raised his hand, one finger extended as he pursed his lips. "I'll have to think about that", he answered. His expression then changing to one of concern that he might have hurt the new Ensigns feelings. "But please, don't think I'm dismissing your idea. It's an excellent and sound idea which we may well use", he added, returning then to his simulations. (Reply Darpeg, IYW) "I don't like these readings", said Bates, concerned now. "This is an adaptation I've never seen before on a device such as this." (Reply Darpeg) Bates nodded, and then returned to the simulation. Resigning himself to the possibility that Darpegs earlier suggestion might now be the only way to get this thing off the ship. (Reply Darpeg) (POsted by Alan) (USS Rome - Bridge - Strategic Officer, Lieutenant Commander Jonathan Warwick - 21:01) The hour mark was beginning to creep closer. Jonathan had found no promising sets of data that led him to believe they had found the Spectre. Others, who were also rummaging through the data, felt like they had, but Lt. Cmdr Warwick was quick to prove them wrong for the Captain. At one point Jonathan remembers saying, regrettably, "Captain T'Vhor, I am certain the Ensign has ignorantly interpreted the data." Jonathan knew he wasn't going to win any social points with that line, but he had said it so now he must live with it - a phrase he too often said to himself. He, of course, had furthered explained why he felt the Ensign was mistaken. Eureka! "Captain, I have found it," Lt. Cmdr Warwick exclaimed aloud. He immediately transitioned his console screen to the bridge viewscreen for all on the bridge to see his work. He picked up a PADD and walked to the side of the viewscreen. As he spoke of his findings he highlighted certain data using the PADD. "All of the measurements we were looking for are matched precisely as expected. Duranium, Tritanium, and tachyon pulses. I am certain the Spectre is at the following location. I recommend traveling there now Captain." Jonathan brought up the location he spoke of on the viewscreen. He stood, staring at the Captain, and waited for a response. (reply T'Vhor, any) (posted by Calvin Capps) (USS Rome - Bridge – CMO, Lt Cmdr Andrew Williams - 21:09) Andrew slipped back onto the bridge he had gotten bored in sickbay and had decided to go back to the bridge. He moved to his position by the back bulkhead and watched as the Spectre appeared in the view screen. "Good work Lt Cmdr. It looks like we've found our Marlin" Andrew smiled to himself. ~We found it~ He stepped forward. “Captain. I request that I be on the first team over. I know we have Dr Rivers over there but we don’t know the conditions of the crew.” (Reply T’Vhor) (Reply T’Vhor, any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Rome - Bridge – CO, Captain T'Vhor - 21:11) NRPG: Awaiting a response from Warwick here so, I'm going to leave an opening and move on to Robbie's post. RPG: The discussion regarding the Spectre, which to all accounts looked as though it had now lost attitude control along with it's ability to communicate, continued on. Already they had tried to hail the ship with no response, and with the possibility of an ancient comms protocol known as 'Morse Signalling' now looking like a conceivable option, the Captain couldn't help but wonder what had occurred over there. At that moment though, the Chief Medical Officer returned to the bridge, apparently eager to get off the Rome now that he had seen the Spectre on the viewscreen. "Captain. I request that I be on the first team over. I know we have Dr Rivers over there but we don’t know the conditions of the crew.” "Agreed", said the Captain, turning then to Warwick once more. "Would you like to accompany us also Lieutenant Commander?", he enquired, preferring now to keep the unknown quantity as close to him as was possible.
