T’Vhor only seemed to contemplate it for a second before replying. "The Mars Defence Perimeter would indeed be an excellent resource to use Mr Sprak, indeed Starfleet command have already authorized its use in attempting to detect our target vessel. Major Falcon himself has agreed to run a recon squadron of fighters that will appear to be on military exercise manoeuvres. However, the signatures of the ETHOS vessel itself have proved thus far to be indeterminate from the ships that it mimics. In short, the MDP sensors will be unlikely to detect anything untoward" Teverine looked towards Sprak who seemed to be readying himself to reply to the Captain’s statement, T’Vhor continued. "There is also no guarantee that any shielding would extend beyond the projected image of an ETHOS equipped ship... If a vessel the size of a nova class is projecting the image of a Galaxy class, then its shields invariably remain immediately beneath the visual avatar, since it is a good degree larger than the source vessel.” Teverine kept quiet, this was entirely in Sprak’s court, Teverine was beginning to mentally plan preparing the probes, they had a short amount of time to get this ready and it seemed the ETHOS was a difficult enough ship to detect. (Reply Sprak) Teverine nodded to his Captain and with Sprak by his side they headed out the door. (Reply Sprak) (Posted by Peter Richards) (USS Spectre - Deck 4, Stellar Cartography - Ensign Fala Taban - 10:33) Starfleet Operations was most helpful fast tracking down the search warrant needed to gain access to the Sol Shipping Traffic Control database. Because they were dealing with a non-military company, it had to go through a Federation magistrate in order to obtain the document. But once he was brought up to speed on the current situation facing the Spectre, it didn't take him long to authorize the access to the database. "Sol Shipping Traffic Control. This is Ensign Fala Taban on board the Federation Starship Spectre requesting access to your database once again. I have the warrant you requested." The young man who help Taban before once again appeared on the screen. =/\=Oh, yes, Ensign. Let me forward you to my supervisor. I don't have the ability to give you that access.=/\= ~He had the ability to deny me the access, but not give it to me,~ thought Taban sarcastically. A woman this time appeared on the screen. He clothes matched her attitude. You could tell from her eyes, the way she glared at the screen back at the ensign, she was in charge. =/\=I hear you are here to violate our privacy rights, Ensign...=/\= "Fala Taban. Ensign Fala Taban. And, yes, I'm hear to violate your privacy rights," he responded dryly. A few button presses on Taban's control panel and the warrant was transmitted to the company. =/\=Here's the decryption key you will need to gain access.=/\= A file appeared on Ensign Taban's system and the woman he was talking to was gone. She had closed the communication channel without a sign-off. "Good riddance," he said using the key to unlock his access to the database. Soon he was sifting through the data. "Computer," stated Taban. "Combine the information from this database with the information from Starfleet into real-time model of starships moving through the Sol System." [Working,] stated the computer in it's unemotional voice. After a few seconds, [Request complete.] "Okay. Now show me this model on the main screen. Time index 01.05.2200 centered around the system's sun." A series of dots appeared on the screen of various colors. "Now play forward and four times speed." Ensign Fala watched as some dots appeared on the screen and started orbiting Earth. While others disappeared representing the ships warping out of the system. "Good. Now run back to current time and save model under file Fala Alpha 1." The ensign touched his badge opening up a communication channel. "Ensign Fala to Commander Sprak," (reply Sprak) "The information you had on the duty roster about creating a model of all ship activity in the Sol System in complete." (reply Sprak) (posted by Jason French) (USS Spectre - Security Office 5 - Security Officer Lt. Lewis Blake - 12:17) “Sorry Lieutenant nothing was meant by it, I am still getting use to talking to Non-Diplomats and those not of influential heritage, so please when I say things like Relax Lieutenant, take it at face value” She said with a friendly smile. Lewis believed it would be the closest thing to an apology as he would get so he took it at face value. "Very well, now that we have a plan lets carry it out. With permission of course." (reply any, none) (posted by Calvin Capps) (USS Spectre – FO’s Office – ACSO Ensign Teverine Tolqu – 13:05) Teverine took the seated offered and continued with his report, Williams sat behind the desk listening intently as he studied the PADD in front of him. “What is the estimated range that we will be able to detect the ETHOS ship?” “I would say around 5.8 light years distance Sir.” “Is there any way of making the scans harder to detect in case the ship has mixed its self into other shipping? We don’t want to give the game away so quickly.” “If we can ensure the plasmonic particle scanner is set in a broader sweep and we tri-axilat the wave forms it would be extremely hard to detect.” (Reply Williams) “Aye Sir I will head to engineering straight away and I will notify you when we are ready to go sir.” (Reply Williams) (Posted by Peter Richards) (USS Spectre – FO’s Office – FO, Commander, Andrew Williams – 13:07) “If we can ensure the plasmonic particle scanner is set in a broader sweep and we tri-axilat the wave forms it would be extremely hard to detect.” Andrew thought about what Tolqu was saying. Although this was not his field of expertise it made sense. “You better got and get on with it.” “Aye Sir I will head to engineering straight away and I will notify you when we are ready to go sir.” “I’ll be waiting for you comm Mr Tolqu.” (Reply Tolqu IYW) He watched Tolqu leave the office and then took a deep breath as his thoughts moved to his sister. “What the hell have you gotten your self into Sis.” With a sad shake of his head he got up and headed for the bridge. (Reply any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre – Engineering – ACSO, Ensign Teverine Tolqu – 13:18) Teverine walked into the main engineering room and looked around at the many crew members busy about their work. He tried grabbing the attention of one passing crew member, making eye contact and walking towards him, The crew member intent on his work barely flashed an acknowledgment to Teverine. Clenching the PADD in his hand he felt the rage begin to grow in him, he felt deep within himself something did not feel right and he began to feel the anger slowly build up inside him, Teverine barely held himself in check, before he caught the slight whiff of burning, just before he felt the heat emanating from the PADD. All Ornarans had a natural ability to call on command a surge of energy from the palm of their hands. This could vary and be controlled, from relieving a strained muscle to killing a man. The energy was always there simmering, for an Ornaran it was not so much as calling forth the power they had inside them, as much as letting the blocks down and releasing it was hard to explain to anyone not of Ornaran decent but the energy was always there and was kept in check, an Ornaran would simply lessen the reigns to a certain degree dependant on how much they wanted used. Without thought Teverine had almost destroyed the outer casing of the PADD, a small round scorch mark stained the back of the PADD. This action snapped Teverine out of his newly shifting mood; he looked with mild shock at what he had done. Shaking his head he put it down to nerves and pressure. Taking a calming breath he tried to restore the calm, as he saw a crewman passing he gently grabbed his arm. “Excuse me crewman.” (Reply Bates) “I need your help.” Quickly passing the PADD to the engineer Teverine plied on. “We are assigned to modifying the probes to try and detect the ETHOS ship, but as you see here, we could use your help configuring the plasmonic particle scanner to the right frequency to help pick up any holographic emitters” (Reply Bates) “We was also thinking of using a tri-axilating wave form.” (Reply Bates) “Thank you crewman, what is your name” (Reply Bates) “Well thank you Norman,” Trying to keep things informal and grateful for the assistance Teverine followed Bates as he walked to his station. (Reply Bates) (Posted by Peter Richards) (USS Spectre - Engineering - Lt Norman Bates - 13:20) Norman visibly jumped at the intrusion of the Ensign that had just grabbed him, his nerves were not the best in the fleet, nay not even on this ship, and the fact that the man had been ranks below him was an even harsher insult! "Excuse me crewman", he had said sharply. "I'm a lieutenant", said Norman, suddenly finding a little gumption within himself. "Can't you see that.... What do you want?" "I need your help", said the Ensign, without actually acknowledging Bates' inquery whilst then handing him a PADD with a schematically layed out problem that seemingly required an engineering answer. Bates layed aside his earlier angst and then looked at the problem, quirking his head slightly throughout and then raising his eyebrows in surprise. "You need to employ an active disciminator here", he said pointing to the relevant circuitry displayed upon the PADD, "it's self balancing and will shunt the particle phase invertor continually through three hundred and sixty degrees until it fixates", he added, handing the Ensign back his PADD as he finished. "We were also thinking of using a tri-axillating waveform.", said Tolqu, looking to the engineer now to assess his response on that. Norman pursed his lips and then looked to the ceiling, his normal awkwardness once again returning. Was it to do with the fact that once again someone had not taken him or his rank seriously, or was it just just Norman... "It would be more effective than bi-axillating", said Norman in response, "not as effective as quadratic shift axillation maybe but.... Yes, In this instance I would implement a tri-axillating pulse in order to take advantage of the unique properties of what it is that you are attempting to detect", he added. "I can show you if you wish?", The Ensign simply smiled, and then he thanked Norman for his input before going on to request his name. "I am Norman", said Norman, "Norman Bates, 'Lieutenant' Norman Bates", he added, emphasising the Lieutenant as he spoke. "Well thank you Norman", said Tolqu as Norman led him over to one of the consoles nearby. (Reply Tolqu, Any IYW) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Engineering – ACSO Ensign Teverine Tolqu - 13:22) Teverine looked again in shock at the Lieutenant, he would of sworn he had seen an Ensign. ~What’s wrong with me today~ Already he had regretted his actions, he had irritated a superior officer, and worse his headache was coming back, he could feel the dull throb begin to throb at the base of his skull, he knew soon it would encompass his whole head. Even though he had been abrupt Lt. Bates knew his duty and acted professionally helping Teverine with his quandary. "It would be more effective than bi-axillating", said Norman in response, "not as effective as quadratic shift axillation maybe but.... Yes, In this instance I would implement a tri-axillating pulse in order to take advantage of the unique properties of what it is that you are attempting to detect", he added. "I can show you if you wish?". Tolqu nodded an then asked the Lieutenant his name. “I am Norman, Norman Bates, and ‘Lieutenant’ Norman Bates” "Well thank you Norman" Teverine quickly added. “Thank you again ‘Lieutenant’ I would be grateful if you could show me, please lead the way.” Adding ‘Lieutenant’ with a hint of deference Teverine hoped Bates might reconsider his first impression of Teverine. Without much thought Teverine added as they walked to Bate’s work station. “It’s been a long shift Sir, my nerves are frayed I didn’t mean any disrespect” (Reply Bates) (Posted by Peter Richards) (USS Spectre – Private quarters – TAC/ASC, Ensign jg Alexandria Smithson – 18:00) After finishing her duties Alex retired to her quarters and grabbed herself something to eat and drink, then having a sonic shower and brushing her teeth for the night she sat at her Computer terminal and pulled out a vintage Game controller and console and connected it up to the screen. Over the next three days she done her duties and retired to her quarters to either play her vintage video game which she replicated or to read a book. (Reply: Any IYW) (Posted by Paul Davies) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 13:42) Finally, the Spectre had arrived at the outer marker, her Captain somewhat relieved now that they were there, but slightly pensive as to what they would now find. It was unlikely of course that the ETHOS ship would still be under the guise of the Spectre itself, more than likely it would be something inconspicuous, but of importance enough to be allowed passage to the key planets in order to achieve what it had come here to do... If indeed, it was actually here! "Helm, take us out of warp. Full impulse once we clear the outer marker... make your course one ninety, mark ninety", said the Captain. (Reply Helm) The Captain then turned to Isengard who was already manning the tactical console and making use of the passive sensors. "Mr Isengard, be sure to maintain passive sensor sweeps of the area please, we do not wish to alert the ETHOS vessel of our presense too soon", said the Captain, knowing full well that Isengard would be resorting to much more than just the Spectre's passive sensors as they moved in past the MDP. (Reply Isengard) "Prepare to launch one modified probe only, at the outer marker", added the Captain. (Reply Isengard IYW) The Captain then hailed Commander Sprak so as to begin the first phase of the detection plan. "Bridge to Commander Sprak", he called. (Reply Sprak) "I would like either yourself, Ensign Tolqu or perhaps the both of you to beam over to the MDP as we pass through. Your goal will be to liase with it's commanding officer and initiate a telemetric tie in to the Spectre's sensor grid via the MDP's tachyon detection grid. If the ship comes through at this point, then the station should see it" (Reply Sprak) "Mr Isengard will attempt to pinpoint anything that is, shall we say, 'out of sorts' with what we should be expexcting to see in regards the vessels currently within the Sol sector.", said the Captain. "Other than that, we will rely as best we can on the means that we have available to us, without raising suspicion unduly", he added. (Reply Sprak) The Captain then turned to Ensign Fala at Science One. "Ensign Fala, I want you to run realtime scans on the data you have available to you from Tactical. If there are any anomolies whatsoever, please be sure to let me know the instance they become known to you", said T'Vhor, turning thenceforth to the First Officer beside him. "Time to cast our nets, let's see what we can find", he said. (Reply Williams) (Reply Helm, Isengard, Sprak, Williams, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Bridge – Conn, Pilot Officer, Jennifer Smith - 13:43) "Helm, take us out of warp. Full impulse once we clear the outer marker... make your course one ninety, mark ninety", said the Captain. “Aye sir. Full impulse once we clear the outer marker and then go to warp, course one ninety, mark ninety sir.” Her fingers danced nimbly across the console as she activated the ships two powerful impulse engines. She fired the ships manoeuvring thrusters as she swung the Spectre onto its new course picking up speed as it is went. She watched as the distance indicator spun down as they reached the outer marker. ~Her we go~ “Going to full impulse Sir.” With that she tapped the impulse engine ignition button on the console and the ship continued on. (Reply Any) (Posted by Robbie) (USS Spectre - Bridge - Science Officer, Ensign Fala Taban - 13:43) Ensign Fala Taban manned the Science Station near the front of the bridge. Looking up at the view screen to his left he could see the stars slow down as they came out of warp in the Sol System. Captain T'Vhor handed out orders to his officers in preparation for their mission to find the ETHOS ship. "Ensign Fala," the captain stated turning towards the science officer. "I want you to run realtime scans on the data you have available to you from Tactical. If there are any anomolies whatsoever, please be sure to let me know the instance they become known to you." "Aye, sir," responded the ensign who turned back towards his station to set up the link between his station and the tactical station. He then fed this data through the flight plan database he had assembled a few days ago. The program he wrote would let him know if there was anything out of sorts. (reply any) (posted by Jason French) (USS Spectre – Science Labratory - ACSO, Ensign Teverine Tolqu - 13:45) Teverine entered the room in a near sweat; Norman Bates was an underrated genius as far as Teverine was concerned. He knew the work was not too challenging for an engineer, but with such a fine timeline, his prompt work lent cause for Teverine's gratitude. As he walked in he saw his CO finishing off a conversation with the Captain on the comm, turning to his ACSO with his ever present gleeful grin Sprak said. “Looks like we going on a little trip my boy” Looking slightly perplexed, Teverine quickly handed over his work to Hightower to complete, now a simple task of uploading the information onto the probes software. As he hastened to follow Sprak as he walked out of the room and down the corridor out of sight. (Reply Sprak) (Posted by Peter Richards) (USS Spectre – Corridor 8 - ACSO, Ensign Teverine Tolqu - 13:47) “So where are we going Sir ?” (Reply Sprak) Teverine followed his Commanding Officer as they headed straight for the transporter room. He knew though complicated the task of integrating the MDP system with the Spectre’s sensor grid, it should be completed pretty quickly. It should effectively cover the area behind the spectre effectively ensuring they had no nasty surprises from behind.” He knew once Isengard had detected the ships they could use the probes they had modified to confirm the ship was the ETHOS. (Reply Sprak) (Posted by Peter Richards) (MDP - Transporter Room 3 - ACMO, Ensign (JG) Dr. L’Risa - 13:48) L’Risa stepped onto the Transporter pad, doing his best to conceal his nervousness. He was looking forward to his new assignment, his first assignment, it was just the mode of transportation to get there that bothered him. He was fairly intelligent, a thoracic surgeon for crying out loud, and had supplemented his medical training with operations and tactics at the Academy. He knew that transporter systems had numerous safe-guards and redundant systems making them perfectly safe and a preferred means of transportation. Just not his preferred means of transportation. He never really cared for having his various body parts dissembled in one location and then reassembled in another. Still, he was now officially a Star Fleet officer and supposed that he would have to get used to such things. However getting used and liking were two entirely different things. He carefully put down the two cases marked “Fragile, Medical Supplies” making sure the contents inside were still carefully packed and padded. He stepped down again and picked up the violin case and one of his two duffle bags. With a third trip he picked up his final duffle bag and his personal vid player. He had been watching a classic World Series game the 2145 battle between the San Francisco Giants and the Mars Raptors and was just mid-way through the deciding sixth game held at Raptor Stadium and he planned to finish the game, though he had seen it a score of times and knew the outcome by heart, as soon as he had any down time. He stood on the pad, turned to the Vulcan transporter chief and making sure(for the third time) that he had the PADD with his orders, he ran a hand through his black mane and said, “Ready when you are Mr. Sorek, please be gentle with my things. I fully intend on testing part of the contents of my medical supplies once I am in my quarters and I really don’t want to be wearing the contents on my uniform.” “Indeed,” was all the Vulcan said and L’Risa felt the all too familiar tingling sensation. He lifted a prayer to the heavens and when he opened his eyes, he found himself on board the Spectre. He could tell that all of his body parts were in the same general location that they had been a few minutes before and nudged the bottom crate of medical supplies, relieved to hear the tinkling sound of glass on glass. He smiled to himself, thinking it was not such a bad beginning and turned and saluted the transporter operator. “Take me to your leader,” he thought to himself, but instead he said, “Ca, er, Ensign (JG) Dr. L’Risa reporting for duty, could you direct me to the proper personnel?” (Reply, any) (Posted by Chris Taylor) (USS Spectre - Transporter Room 1 - Ensign JG Keith Marciano - 13:49) The Spectre had stopped over at the Mars Defense Perimeter to drop off the Chief Science Officer Sprak and Assistant CSO Teverine Tolqu so that they could hook up their sensor net in an attempt to detect the ETHOS ship. Ensign Marciano was surprised when the Mars base signaled him once the officers had beamed down that there was someone who was waiting to beam up to the ship. =/\=Spectre, this is MDP Station Santa Maria,=/\= came a voice over the comm channel. =/\=We have an ensign here who has orders to report on board. Ready to transport.=/\= "Understood," said the ensign pressing a few buttons and then sliding his fingers down the transporter control panel. "Energizing." The lighting on the transporter pad changed and someone started to materialize. It was a male Caitian, the first Keith had ever met, dressed in a Starfleet uniform outlined in blue. “Ca, er, Ensign JG Dr. L’Risa reporting for duty," stated the ensign with a purr. "Could you direct me to the proper personnel?" "Sure," replied Ensign Marciano. "The proper protocol is to report to the captain on the bridge. If he's not there, check his Ready Room." (reply L'Risa, any) (posted by Jason French) (USS Spectre - Transporter Room 1 - ACMO, Ensign (JG) Dr L'Risa - 13:50) L'Risa virtually leaped off the pad and hoped that his fellow Ensign would assume it was his eagerness to be on board the Spectre and not his eagerness to be out of the transporter. "Thankss for the headss up," he said, slipping into an accent he thought he had forgotten, "Where do I stow my stuff in the meantime? There are some very sensitive medical supplies and a violin that I wouldn't want to lose." (Reply Ensign JG Marciano) (Posted by Chris Taylor) (USS Spectre - Transporter Room 1 - ACMO, Ensign JG Dr. L’Risa - 13:53) “Ifff you don’t minnnd Ensign, I’ll just store my things here till I have a chance to check in. I would appreciate it if you could keep a close eye on the medical supplies, especially if you have any Irish blood in you. I might even be conned into sharing a bottle or two of those sssuplies with you should everything be intact when I return.” L’Risa had memorized the deck plans of the Spectre and had a good idea of where the bridge was. He stepped into the TL and said, “Bridge.” Unlike the transporter, L’Risa liked the turbo-lift, he loved the sensation of the sudden acceleration and deceleration He stepped out of the bridge and looked about him in awe. It was the first time he had been on the bridge of a real starship and he hoped it did not show. He put his tongue back in his mouth and said to no one in particular. Ensign(JG)Dr. L’Risa, I am supposed to reportttt to the Captainnnn.” (reply bridge, Captain T’Vhor) (posted by Chris Taylor) (USS Spectre - Transporter Room 1 - Ensign JG Keith Marciano - 13:54) Ensign Keith Marciano took a few steps back as the new officer practically lept off the transporter pad. "Thankss for the headss up," Ensign L'Risa purred. "Where do I stow my stuff in the meantime? There are some very sensitive medical supplies and a violin that I wouldn't want to lose." "There's storage compartments just over to your left," explained Keith. "Wou can store any equipment temporarily until you can come back and pick it up. Your arrival was unexpected, so I doubt the quartermaster has your room assignment yet. I will notify him and you should have some quarters assigned within the hour." "Ifff you don’t minnnd Ensign," replied L'Risa. "I’ll just store my things here till I have a chance to check in. I would appreciate it if you could keep a close eye on the medical supplies, especially if you have any Irish blood in you. I might even be conned into sharing a bottle or two of those sssuplies with you should everything be intact when I return.” Keith smiled at the response. "Sure. Don't mention it. And, welcome aboard." (reply L'Risa IYW) The new Caitian officer left the transporter room and Ensign Marciano started storing his supplies in one of the storage compartments. After he was done he contacted the quartermaster to inform him of the ship's new arrival. (reply none, any) (posted by Jason French) (Mars Defence Perimeter – Main Station – ACSO Ensign Teverine Tolqu – 13:55) As Sprak finished off explaining the current situation to the Commanding office in charge of the station, Teverine had already begun linking up the sensors to the Spectre, being given permission almost immediately as he had been already informed of there arrival from Starfleet command. When the Captain deployed the probes he would also link them to the MDP to increase accuracy and range. Working with the Starfleet crew assigned to the station Teverine was half way through complete when Sprak approached. Teverine moved slightly to the side allowing Sprak to see the progress he had been making. (Reply Sprak) “I have also prepared the sensors to use the probes when deployed as a static sentry which will transmit the tachyon beams we tri-axcailted to create a tachyon field, any holographic vessel attempting to navigate through the field would be exposed.” Teverine paused. “In theory” (Reply Sprak) “Yes sir I am using the MDP’s tetracyanate subspace amplifiers to link with the Spectre’s deflector dish, generating 110 percent sensor efficiency.” (Reply Sprak) (Posted by Peter Richards) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 13:59) The hiss of the doors beyond the command array immediately signalled the arrival of an unfamiliar officer, a Caitian no less who had walked onto the bridge seemingly surprised at what he was now seeing, whilst at the same time, a tad nervy. This of course must have been the new arrival that had recently transported over from the MDP, needless to say though, this was hardly the time to be reporting in. "Ensign(JG)Dr. L’Risa, I am supposed to reportttt to the Captainnnn.”, said the Catian. The Captain turned briefly to the newly arrived Ensign and requested that he approach, which he duly did. "Do you have your orders Ensign?", enquired the Captain, whilst still very much aware of the process of overseeing the delicate matter of trying to detect the ETHOS vessel they had come here to find. (Reply L'Risa) The Captain took the offered PADD containing the Ensigns transfer orders and perused them briefly, noting as he did so the minor fracas that had occured with the Klingons on Alpha Gamma IV. A Caitian with a tendency to pick fights with Klingons!, Now that was a turn up for the books. The Captain raised an eyebrow at that, and then he read on of the Ensign's medical qualifications, which were extensive indeed. Sickbay would be glad of his experience, that much was for sure. It was about then though that Ensign Fala suddenly reported an unknown vessel that seemed somewhat out of place in the system. The Captain responded immediately of course. "I am afraid that this will have to wait Ensign L'Risa, there is urgent business to attend to", said the Captain, "in the interim, I welcome you aboard the Spectre and trust that your tour of duty with us will be rewarding and informative. You are dismissed", he added and then he quickly returned to the task ahead of him. Namely, the report of the unknown... (Reply L'Risa, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Bridge - ACMO, Ensign JG Dr. L’Risa ACMO - 14:01) L’Risa took a deep breath to center himself. “What are you nine?” he thought to himself. When he spoke again it was without a trace of his Caitian accent. “Yes sir, of course. Here you go.” He held out the PADD for the Captain to take. (reply T’Vhor) “Sir, I can tell your busy here so I won’t take any of your valuable time. I have been briefed about the current situation and while sorting through things like this are not my forte or expertise. I do find the dilemma interesting. If you want an extra set of eyes, or if there is anything I can do to help. Don’t hesitate to ask.” He ended by saying, “Do you have any orders for me now sir?” (reply T’Vhor) (posted by Chris Taylor) (USS Spectre - Bridge - Science Officer, Ensign Fala Taban - 14:03) The Spectre made its approach to Earth. The planet was still a small sphere on the view screen with a series of dots flying around like bees around a hive. As the hub for the Federation, there was much space traffic in the region, making the crew's search for the ETHOS ship just that much harder. An audible beep came from the Science Station at Ensign Fala's fingertips. With a few key presses the data came up on his screen. "Sir," stated the ensign turning around in his seat to face the captain. "It appears I have a ship that isn't registered with any flight plan either with the Federation or the Sol Shipping Traffic Control." (reply T'Vhor) "It's a freighter," replied Taban. "Bearing 19 mark 38. Distance. 100,000 kilometers." (reply T'Vhor, any) "I'm not getting any indication from the modified probe that this ship might be the one we are looking for. All I know is that it isn't where it's supposed to be," stated the ensign. (replay T'Vhor, any) (posted by Jason French) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 14:04) Thus far the sensors had not detected anything untoward on the ships approach to Earth, regardless of the fact that the modified probe had been launched and the Science team despatched to the MDP in order to oversee the link up. Could it be that their target vessel was elsewhere? If so, then where? An insight into that question came sooner than the Captain had expected as Ensign Fala alerted him to a possible anomoly of a sort nearby. "Sir,.... It appears I have a ship that isn't registered with any flight plan either with the Federation or the Sol Shipping Traffic Control", said Fala. The Captain responded immediately of course. "What is the vessels designation Ensign?", he asked. "It's a freighter...Bearing 19 mark 38. Distance. 100,000 kilometers", answered the Science officer. "Do we still have confirmed telemetry with the probe and the MDP?", asked the Captain, wondering now if they could reliably confirm the data Fala had just received. The SciO's response confirmed a reliable link up, but the question as to it's situation still remained. "I'm not getting any indication from the modified probe that this ship might be the one we are looking for. All I know is that it isn't where it's supposed to be," said Fala. It was quite possible of course that the freighter, if indeed it was a freighter, could just be suffering a fault with it's registry transmission circuitry. But then again.... The Captain then turned to the helm. "Helm, plot a flyby of the suspect vessel, slow to one third impulse", said the Captain. (Reply Helm) "Mr Isengard, be sure to inform me if you have any concerns via sensors or otherwise", said the Captain, this time directing his order to the telepathic acting security chief currently manning Tactical One, and emphasising the 'otherwise' accordingly. (Reply Isengard, Any) The target vessel then appeared on the bridge monitor, looming ever closer as the Spectre neared it. "Open a channel to the freighter", said the Captain, "Let us see if we can gain any insight via it's Captain's response", said T'Vhor. "It's a freighter...Bearing 19 mark 38. Distance. 100,000 kilometers.” A fleeting smile crossed her face as she heard the Captain’s command "Helm, plot a flyby of the suspect vessel, slow to one third impulse", ”Aye Sir. Slowing to one third impulse, commencing fly by.” She plotted the position of the freighter on the console as she disengaged the warp engines and brought them to stand by. She then as she watched there speed drop increased the power of the impulse engines so that they would hold the ships speed at one third. She glanced back at the position of the freighter. They were now closing at a respectable speed rather then a run away train. ~Okay Jen, Close enough to make then point but not scrape the paint of the hull~ She tapped in a slight course change that would bring them close but not to close. She was half listening to what the freighter Captain was saying as she piloted the ship closer. Suddenly a message flashed up on her console and she quickly read it ~Five thousand kilometres and then hold station~ With a quick flurry of commands she extended the stopping distance to five thousand kilometres and brought the Spectre to a halt in a tactically superior position to freighter. (Reply any) (Posted by Robbie) (Cargo Ship Corsair - Bridge - Captain Thomas Grayson - 14:07) The captain of the cargo ship looked up at his view screen which now showed the bridge of the USS Spectre. Her captain, a half-Vulcan / half-Betazoid, Captain T'Vhor took up most of the screen. "What can I do you for, Captain?" =/\=You can inform me of the nature of the cargo you are carrying Captain,=/\= stated T'Vhor. =/\=And if you please, explain as to why your vessel is not operating under standard shipping protocols.=/\= "Sure," Captain Grayson said with a smile and a shrug of his shoulders. (reply T'Vhor IYW) Captain Grayson walked out to the middle of his view screen. "As for our registry codes. While our communications appear to be working, there's currently an overload in the chambers coil that transmits our transponder. We are currently trying to affect repairs. So, as you can see, Captain. We are just an ordinary supply ship. Just trying to get home." (reply T'Vhor) (posted by Jason French) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 14:08) The Captain held a certain unease at the relaxed candor of the freighters Captain, normally when a Federation vessel quizzed a merchant CO on his actions, the response was often hostile and lacking in respect. It would seem that they often felt that as they were not bound by the same rules that Starfleet operatives were, they often threw caution to the wind so to speak. This man however was acting somewhat unexpectedly. "Sure," he had said with a disarming smile and a shrug, "We have been commissioned by the Terran Colonization Group to bring construction supplies from Altair VI. We are planning on delivering our supplies and then stay at Earth for some R and R." The Federation Captain merely listened, his own finely tuned instincts telling him now that something was not quite what it seemed. Briefly, he then turned towards Isengard behind him, knowing that if anyone on the bridge might know for certain, then the telepathic sevant was the one that would do, despite the fact that he might not relay that verbally right now. (Reply Isengard, IYW) Captain Grayson then stood and moved towards his own viewscreen, apparently as a gesture of non hostility perhaps. The he answered the Captains second query. "As for our registry codes. While our communications appear to be working, there's currently an overload in the chambers coil that transmits our transponder. We are currently trying to affect repairs. So, as you can see, Captain. We are just an ordinary supply ship. Just trying to get home." T'Vhor nodded in response, and then offered his own constructive advice. "Perhaps we might escort you to Earth orbit Captain?", he offered, "after all, with an inactive transponder you will only attract many more inquiry's on the way, thus delaying your arrival home even further", he added. (Reply Grayson) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Bridge - Acting TAC/SC, Lt Walker Isengard - 14:09) Walker had been listening intently to the chatter going on between the two Captain's, and the slight impressions he was getting from the freighters as he exchanged pleasantries with smiles and shrugs. His own CO though had glanced towards him now, his intention clear. Isengard looked off to the side, apparently at the bulkhead, and his eyes were closed to slits. After thirty seconds of silence the security chief half turned to the Captain, "They're trying to avoid detection." was all he said. He turned back to his tactical screen, but sent to T'Vhor... :Get me closer, I'm at the extreme edge of my range for anything more detailed. They could be trading in illegal spice, for all I know now.: The Captain merely nodded and then indicated to the helm via his armrest console to take the ship to within five thousand kilometres and then hold station, this of course was done inaudibly so that the freighter Captain remained unaware. The result was precisely as he thought, Grayson duly sidestepped that offer. =/\=No need...My engineer will have the problem corrected in a few minutes. So...if there isn't anything else, can we be on our way?=/\=, he answered. T'Vhor quirked his head slightly to one side, then he spoke again. But not before Isengard's voice had become evident in his mind as they neared the target vessel. The Captain reacted accordingly of course. The Freighter was indeed hiding something and a ruse was thus initiated. "It would appear that our sensors are picking up an intermix instability within your aft anti-matter containment vessel", he began, "I'm afraid that I must insist that you power down your engines and allow us to tractor you into McKinley for a closer inspection of this situation", said the Captain, "otherwise your crew may not arrive home for rest and recreation in one peace" (Reply Grayson, Any) (Posted by Alan) (USS Spectre - Bridge - Science Officer, Ensign Fala Taban - 14:10) Ensign Fala Taban watched the exchange between Captain T'Vhor and the captain of the freighter from the science station near the front of the bridge. As not to interrupt the talking on the bridge, Taban decided to send the message text only. "Ensign Fala to Commander Sprak or Ensign Tolqu," typed the ensign into his console. "We have encountered a freighter running with no flight plan and no working transponder. Can you pick anything up? Respond in text as not to give away any information." Though unorthodox he certainly was inventive. “How’s that tri-axilating pulse progressing crewman? “ They had split their duties among them and Teverine looked over as he inquired the progress of the pulse which Lt. Bates helped design. “5 more minutes sir.” The crewman replied as Teverine, looked down, he had just linked the MDP into the Spectre’s sensor system, when his Comm badge chirped. =/\=Ensign Fala to Commander Sprak or Ensign Tolqu,=/\= “Ensign ACSO Tolqu here, CSO Sprak is busy at the moment re calibrating the Mar’s Defence Perimeter’s deflector dish.” =/\=We have encountered a freighter running with no flight plan and no working transponder. "Understood, Routing control of the Main Deflector Dish to you. Let me know what you find out..." Teverine read the message and quickly scanned the system, their modifications where not yet complete, but they had no time left, and he hoped Sprak was progressing along with his work as fast as the crewman around him where, they frantically punched in command after command. Teverine quickly detected the ship he looked at his screen as it began to display information which Teverine quickly typed into Fala’s screen. ‘Confirming it’s a freighter...Bearing 19 mark 38. Distance. 100,000 kilometres, scanning interior, unable to sensors still not at maximum efficiency…’ Teverine felt a little let down, but they where only working with 70 percent efficiency. (Reply Fala) ‘Confirming our sensors are picking up intermittent problems with their aft anti-matter engine, there seems to be an overload in progress, nothing serious but it would effect their transmissions.’ ~suspiciously well timed~ Though the screen said nothing of the sort, Teverine began to have a nasty feeling in his palms about this vessel, though he could not put his finger on anything just yet, he slapped his hand on the side of the console. “Damn it, we need these sensors working at full system readiness.” (Reply Sprak) Teverine looked back with a relieved smile; his Commander was back which must mean some good news, and an extra pair of hands to get the system running at 100 percent efficiency. Looking back to his screen Teverine quickly added. ‘Technically there could be major problems if the intermix ranges above 1500 degrees this would potentially lead to an anti-matter explosion, we could have a valid reason to tractor this vessel to base?’ (Reply Fala) (Posted by Peter Richards) (USS Spectre - Bridge - Science Officer, Ensign Fala Taban - 14:12) Ensign Fala Taban had turned control of the Spectre's Main Deflector Dish over to Commander Sprak and Ensign Tolqu back at the Mars Defense Perimeter. As to not distract from the conversation between Captain T'Vhor and the freighter captain, Ensign Fala decided to communicate with the officers on the MDP via text read-out only. 'Confirming it's a freighter...' came a response from Tolqu. 'Bearing 19 mark 38. Distance. 100,000 kilometers, scanning interior, unable to sensors still not at maximum efficiency...' The Bajorian ensign grimaced in frustration. 'Hmm. I was hoping for more,' typed Taban. 'Is there anything else that you can get from your scan?' 'Confirming our sensors are picking up intermittent problems with their aft anti-matter engine, there seems to be an overload in progress, nothing serious but it would effect their transmissions. A hushed conversation between the two continued for a minute. With a nod, Captain Grayson turned back to the screen. "When you put it that way, I don't see we have any alternative. We are powering down our engines." (reply T'Vhor) (posted by Jason French) (USS Spectre - Bridge - CO, Captain T'Vhor - 14:14) Sometimes, T'Vhor was thankful for his Vulcan heritage and the relative calm that it gave him, most Captain's by now would have been losing their temper with Grayson's continual sidestepping, and the fact that he felt obliged at this point to turn down the offer of a tow, spoke volumes about the situation in hand. Any good Captain would always put his crew first, this guy did'nt seem to want to do that right now, a further indication that here was a man that had something to hide... "Then let me put it to you another way Captain", said the Vulcan hybrid in a typically calm, controlled voice, "your ship is in an unstable condition which threatens the lives of both your crew, and anyone that you come into contact with from this point on, therefore, I will NOT allow it to proceed to Earth in such condition, you will power down your engines and you will allow yourself to be towed", he added. Grayson said nothing at that point, a hushed communication with what appeared to be his own first officer ensuing and duly ending with an anticipated backdown. "When you put it that way, I don't see we have any alternative. We are powering down our engines", Said Grayson. Captain T'Vhor duly nodded in response, then he ordered both the helmsman and the Tactical officer to prepare for a tractor lock on the freighter. "Thank you Captain, please prepare your ship for towing, we will take you to the McKinley orbiting platform where your ship may receive the assistance you require. 'Thanks,' typed Ensign Fala. 'I'll report this to the captain.' ~She got the message~ Teverine smiled as he continued to scan the vessel, whilst waiting for Sprak to finish off the final components. Could it be that although something was definately untoward with this vessel, it was'nt the ETHOS ship after all? A sudden alert from the side drew the Captain away from such thoughts as the Science officer spoke up in regards the text communication that was occuring between herself and Ensign Tolqu aboard the MDP. "Sir, I'm getting a message from Ensign Tolqu back at the MDP. He says the freighter has Uranium ore onboard which is obscuring our sensors. "Uranium?", queried the Captain, "the ships maniefest does not report such a cargo. Why would they not declare that they were carrying Uranium ore?" "Hold on, I'm getting more...", said Ensign Fala suddenly, she then relayed the information that Tolqu had sent regarding using their own sensors to nullify the ore directly. She then added... "He says we need some engineering help on this one. Routing it to your armrest readout.", said the Science officer, and all at once, the message was there on the Captain's console. It made sense at least, reversing the tachyon field though was an unconventional solution to the problem, and as such, the nullifying scan would probably not be detected by any of Graysons crew, since it could in theory anyway, run along the tractor beam. The Captain nodded at the suggestion, and then ordered Ensign Fala to give Tolqu the go ahead on that plan and liase with Tactical to make it happen. It was important that he was not disturbed whilst doing that for he was at the moment, a kingpin in this operation. What they needed now was someone else on Tactical to work with Fala and Tolqu to oversee the Spectre's side of proceedings, so with that in mind, the Captain opened a channel. "Bridge to Ensign Smithson", he began. "Lieutenant H'chir will be wandering around engineering talking to invisible crewmen if I don't get back to help him out. How about a rain check? I get off duty at 1800 if all this stuff with the ETHOS ship is settled. Otherwise, I might be working a double shift." “I understand, Mr. Marciano, I’ll take that rain check. If you don’t have to work a double shift stop by, I doubt if I am going to get much sleep anytime soon. Also as I was telling the Captain. Medical is my primary area of expertise, but I do have some background in systems and operations and I know a little about the ETHOS situation. So if you need a different set of eyes to look over anything I am available.” (reply Marciano) (posted Chris Taylor) (USS Spectre - Transporter Room 1 - Ensign JG Keith Marciano - 14:20) Ensign Keith Marciano had decline Ensign L'Risa's offer to share a bottle of Killeen's Red because of the need to get back to Engineering. "I understand, Mr. Marciano," responded the ensign. "I’ll take that rain check. If you don’t have to work a double shift stop by, I doubt if I am going to get much sleep anytime soon. Also as I was telling the Captain. Medical is my primary area of expertise, but I do have some background in systems and operations and I know a little about the ETHOS situation. So if you need a different set of eyes to look over anything I am available." "Unfortunately, I'm not exactly sure what's going on with the ETHOS situation," explained Keith. "I'm stuck in the bowels of the ship either repairing broken systems or beaming people down to places unknown. I guess that's the life of an ensign. Perhaps check in to sickbay? Our CMO is also our First Officer, so I'm not sure if he was up on the bridge, where you just came from, or in sickbay, but perhaps there's someone who could direct you there?" (reply L'Risa) "Sure. If this is all cleared up you can count on me being there." (reply L'Risa) Before the ensign left, Keith gave a wave. "Welcome aboard, Ensign." Beep the Commbadge sounded. =/\= Bridge to Ensign Smithson =/\=, he began. “Oh my!” She said startled, then tapped her Commbadge =/\= Smithson here Sir =/\= she said. =/\= Please report to the bridge immediately Ensign, I will be needing you to man tactical two, Ensign Fala will brief you on what you need to do when you arrive. Bridge out =/\=, said the Captain. Before she could respond, the line went quiet. “Well whadda you know” She exclaimed and tying things up in Security she makes for the Bridge, “Bridge” she said after entering the Turbolift and the doors closed. On the ride up, she wondered why the change in things. Something though was not right there, H'Chir scratched his head as he pondered the situation. Why was it that the inertial sensors were showing a greater strain than what should have been expected for such a low density freight vessel? It just was'nt adding up... The chirp of his combadge though, snapped him away from his ponderings, as Ensign Fala on the bridge answered his request of 'Engineering, H'Chir here. What can I do for you?' =/\=Ensign Tolqu back on the MDP has a plan to help us scan the freighter. He will explain.=/\= Came the response. H'Chir then leaned back against the bulkhead nearby, scratching at his head as he did so and awaiting the patch-through from the MDP. "Ensign Smithson reporting for Bridge Duty Sir", said the new TAC/ASC. The Captain duly responded, taking a few seconds to note the Ensign's apparent surprise at being there. "Tactical two if you please Ensign Smithson", said the Captain, and then without missing a beat, "Ensign Fala will assist as need be", he added. (Reply Smithson) The Ensign then headed over to the respective station and the CO, returned his gaze to the freighter, still fixed as it was firmly on the viewscreen which was now showing an aft perspective on the proceedings. The Captain then addressed Ensign Fala once again. "How are those modifications coming along Ensign Fala?", he asked. A newly minted Ensign from Starfleet Academy, complete with a single trunk of belongings and a duffel bag of uniforms. It was a small room, appropriate to her rank. To be honest she should have been sharing it with someone else. She wondered if she would be aboard the Spectre. She sighed as she moved the two paces from the bed to the desk, sitting down and pulling up the roster on the crew. She'd been told that the Station was unsure of when the Spectre would be arriving when she docked. She knew that wasn't true, Starfleet kept very careful watch on their ships. But she was an Ensign and they generally got told only what they needed to know. She recalled her final exam with fondness and her parents having been able to travel from Betazed to her graduation brought a smile to her face. Letters and packages for four years had been her life and she hadn't realized how much she had missed them until they had taken her out for dinner. It had been absolutely wonderful to see them. Two days of leave, showing her parents the sights of Earth. Her Mother had particularly loved when they went to the 'Great Wall' in China and had listened to their historian tell the group about the construction. Her Father had enjoyed the food, as usual, insisting that they stop to eat every single time they passed a food cart or restaurant, sampling everything. Her uniforms did seem a little tight after leave. She hadn't been given any specific duties, except to study up on the ship, it's history and it's crew. Well that hadn't been a specific duty, it just seemed like a good idea. In the space of two hours, she had gone through most of the senior staff. In truth, Ellie had to admit to herself, she felt a little intimidated. How was she going to fit in? She honestly hadn't expected to be assigned as the primary counsellor so quickly, but she supposed she could muddle through. She held her head in her hands for a long moment then decided she had done enough studying. She was going to explore. (reply anyone on the station or none!)
