History, Education and Skills
Family and Background :

Gan Nolar is born on Cardassia in 2385 from a Cardassian father, Rugat Nolar (or Gul Rugat), and an half-cardassian, half-Bajoran mother, Shemek. Shemek is actually the daughter of Gul Moran. Moran was the commanding officer of the Prakara, a Galor-class cruiser, that was commanding the fleet surveying the Cardassian-Federation border between Korma and Sheva during the 2350s. As many other Cardassian, Moran had a Bajoran mistress, and Shemek is the result of such relation. As Shemeks mother was killed not long after she gave birth, she was brought to Cardassia and rose by Moran. As she was half Bajoran, her youth was incredibly difficult. From school to her career in science, promotion and merits came very rarely and she was looked at as inferior to every Cardassian. For most of her life, she hated her father and the Cardassian more than anything. She had no way to escape it, even as a young adult...no way until she met Rugat Nolar. Gul Rugat was the commanding officer of a Cardassian Patrol Cruiser. He was a valiant patriot, a military man, and an intellectual. While in public, Rugat showed the normal value and speech that any Gul should have, privately he was extremely progressist for a Cardassian. Thanks to his military success, Gul Rugat succeeded in gaining Gul Morans respect. His values, his respect for other species and his romanticism won the heart of Shemek. Gul Rugat and Shemek married in 2371. Their plan to have children was postponed when the Cardassian-Klingon war started. The war over, they had two children : Rolok (2375) and Letari (2377). In 2382, Gul Rugat was given the command of a Galor Type II to fight the Dominion. The Cardassian Union was in bad condition but survived, so did Rugat. The Dominion war over, Rugat returned to his family and give birth to his third child, Gan (2385). Their children were raised in the love of family and of Cardassia. While Shemek hated most of the Cardassian culture, her respect for her husband and love for her children contributed to her accepting her place on Cardassia. Her family made her proud and give her a reason to live. The three children were raised in such love, patriotism and values, while also being thought of the respect for other cultures.

Education

:

Studied physics at the University of Culat (Cardassia Prime : 2400-2402) and the University of Bajor (Bajor : 2402-2403) Studied engineering at Starfleet Academy (2403-2406) and at the Cardassian Military Academy on Kora II (2406-2407).

Pre-Starfleet History

:

In 2402, while both Rolok and Letari were adult and started their own family and career, Gan was still only 16. On Cardassia, things started to go very bad as a civil war was looming. Afraid for his family if the coup failed, Rugat convinced Shemek to move on her homeworld, Bajor, with Gan, until the Civil war was over. Gan had to leave University on Cardassia, and had to continue his formation on Bajor. When the Civil War indeed broke up, several military leaders decided to support different political powers (ex: the Detapa Council, Central Command, the Obsidian Order) therefore broking the military into different clans. Hostilities started as everyone tried to unsuccessfully take the power over the others. Rugat supported the Detapa Council and died supporting it, his ship being destroyed during the war. Once 17, Gan decided to leave her mother on Bajor and attend Starfleet Academy. He would have preferred to join the Cardassian Military Academy, but with his father having supported the losing side in the Civil War, the danger was too great. In 2406, after three years, the Federation Civil War started, and again the situation became precarious. The political situation was more stable on Cardassia, an agreement being reached between the High Command and the Obsidian Order. Gan attended the Cardassian Military Academy at Kora II and completed the formation he had started at Starfleet Academy. He was then assigned to the Koranor and served eight months on it, until he was force to flee again. The Detapa Council had tried to gain more political power once again by subduing some of the unaffiliated military leader to help their cause. The Obsidian Order responded with killing, and the situation became precarious once more. With Gan still associated with his father, this was an easy choice.

Starfleet History

:

Returning to the Federation, he was assigned to the USS Mournblade in 2409, a Keltoi-class ship part of the 52th fleet. Having also the task to protect his mother, he succeeded into convincing his CO to accept her mother in the science department (she served one year, and then returned to Bajor). The situation being easier to control in Starfleet, Gan decided to stay with Starfleet rather than return to Cardassia. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant JG in 2412 and received several short-term assignments...until assigned to the USS Rosenante in the late 2414.

General Notes

:

While he has respect for the Bajoran religion, he is not the religious type (he does not believe in the prophets). He prefers to spend his time improving his knowledge and skill in military and politics. Helping his family and the Detapa Council to gain more influence in Cardassia could also be considered an important hobby, as he past most of his time doing that (and he quite enjoy it). Aside from politics and military, Gan is fascinated by painting. Before they had to fight militarily for their survival, Cardassian were reputed for their arts, and it has always fascinated Gan. He has the same high interest for Bajoran arts. The Bajoran have been prosperous for thousand years and the evolution of their arts has been a huge hobby for Gan. He has himself a collection of paintings at home in Cardassia. Being too valuable to risk their destruction, Gan never dared to bring one on a ship, but he has replica of three of his paintings he always have in his quarters. One is the replica of a 21th century Cardassian painting representing the Dokat Heights, a location on Cardassia Prime known for its flowers and landscape ; the second is a 25th century painting representing the Dominion fleet fleeing through the wormholes after having been defeated by a huge Cardassian fleet ; the third is a Bajoran painting from the 21th century representing a Bajoran Lightship traveling to Cardassia in the 16th century.

Awards :

Admiral Bell threw her arms around the Ensign, "You don't have to be scared anymore, you don't have to be guilty anymore, you are not responsible for what that madman did to you.", she said to her quietly and for a moment longer, releasing her from the embrace. "It's going to take time, its going to be a toll... I will be right here, and I am not going anywhere."
