Born in the city of Sha'Tvak, Raal Provence on planet Vulcan in 2360 to parents, Vanik grew up like typical Vulcans. Like his species, he embraces the teaching
of Sarek and shares his parents enthusiasm for the pursuit of knowledge. Both his parents studied at the Vulcan Science Academy, but it was his mother who became a teacher there until her death in 2387.
Vanik's father left his studies to work in Sha'Tvak at a knowledge centre. Vanik, was home-schooled by his parents and, like them, is a strong believer in the balance of logic, emotion, and ethics. Rather than repressing and purging emotions, he believes that good control can help to further help in ones' life.
He also believes that being purely logical would upset the balance of logic and ethics, and so logic should not come before ethics. Despite this, he does not
really have a sense of 'good and evil'. Rather, he believes that what is ethical can help people to live in harmony.
Vanik has always had an interest in learning. To acquire knowledge helps one to understand the universe and learning can be described as something which gives him pleasure. Indeed, he enjoys learning and openly admits this. The fact that he has learnt something new, however much it is worth, is something to be acknowledged and celebrated, moreover if people benefit from it.
This said, he does not give way to his emotions, so his experience of pleasure from learning something would not the same as most other Humanoid species. The same is true for his other emotions.
His quest for knowledge led him to studying at the Vulcan Science Academy. During his time there, his interest in the exploration of space grew. The
thought of being able to travel through space and be at the vanguard of gathering knowledge appealed to him, and after five years of studying, he joined
the Vulcan Space Programme. However, because a lot of the information was gained from Starfleets explorations, he left just after a year at the Vulcan Space Programme and join Starfleet, believing that he would gather more knowledge with them.
