History, Education and Skills
Family and Background :

After the annexation of Bajor by the Cardassian Empire, Tau's great-grandmother helped to settle a Bajoran colony in the Valo Star system. Five generations of terraforming and farming produced a culture unique within Bajoran society. Tau Renora was born on Valo II in 2382 to a Bajoran mother, a widowed agricultural genetics instructor, and a Human father, an engineer from the Setlik III colony. Tau was raised on Valo II in a primarily Bajoran environment. His mother, Kara Sola, had been a member of the rebellion under the Cardassians, and a member of the Maquis after that. His father, Thomas deVries, however sympathetic, couldn't endorse it, and she settled back to a more domestic life upon his urging shortly before Tau was born. Tau Renora (named for his maternal grandfather, a hero of the rebellion) has one sister, Kara Anayda, ten years his elder from his mother's first marriage, who lived with the family until 2399 when Tau turned seventeen, and she left to find her future. Neither he nor his mother has heard from her in nine years.

Pre-Starfleet History

:

In 2388, life on the colony changed. For nearly two decades, everyone had been an enemy and a terrorist. Children had been trained from early ages to fight guerrilla warfare, and to hate. The fear and paranoia the Bajorans had been hoping to avoid by setting Valo II had seemed to catch up to them, and was threatening to choke them all. With the peace accord in place, attitudes changed overnight. Floods of former freedom fighters left the Maquis ranks to settle, have families, or pursue other goals there was no time for during war and occupation. Valo, like many other colonies, threw out their Maquis texts and started teaching their children the values of trust and cooperation. The Maquis, now a formally recognized organization was no longer a terrorist cell, and many Maquis were proud of that. With the need of regulars in the Maquis fleet, Tau's mother, Kara Sola, wanted to join back up, as a course trainer. Thomas, her husband, was deadset against it however, and in 2390, left Valo II and his family. With a mother in The Maquis fleet, and a human father who had abandoned them, Tau found his calling in the Maquis Youth, where he met with a group of disillusioned youth as himself, who felt that "You don't shoot the horse that brought you here": If the Maquis can get a Peace Accord by engaging the Federation in guerrilla warfare, why stop now when you're ahead. As a teenager, Renora spent a lot of time with his new friends, planning and running raids, unsanctioned by the Maquis of course. As enemies of the Federation, and now the Maquis, by 2399 Tau and his friends were wanted criminals. With Anayda gone, he didn't care about much anymore, she had been his hero his whole life. He and his friends went on a particularly high risk raid against a Maquis weapons depot, which ended in complete disaster. Two of them were killed there, and two more were arrested. Only Tau and one other got away, where they decided to lay low on Bajor for a while. As Tau approached his 18th birthday, he met the love of his life, a Vulcan female named T'Pal. She loved him, and he did not know why. He told her of his time with the Maquis Youth, and she didn't judge, she just wanted him to be at peace with himself. She taught him IDIC, Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination. Upon her urging, he turned himself in to Maquis authority, where he would serve his community to atone for his crimes. Kara Sola pulled some strings and had him assigned to Valo II. In 2402, his sentence fulfilled, T'Pal, who had stayed with him this whole time, suggested a career in Starfleet, like she was considering for herself. They applied together. In 2403, her family was recalled to Vulcan, and at 21 years old he received a letter of acceptance from Starfleet Academy on Earth.

"It's going to take time, its going to be a toll... I will be right here, and I am not going anywhere."
