Mission: The Tholian Brief

Day: 1

Stardate: 2446.09.04

(Starbase Freedom - Level 13- Main Security - ASC - Lt. Andy Taylor -
1345)

Taylor and Trei followed the station security man as he led them to the
Chief of Security’s office. As they entered the suites he couldn’t help
but notice how it had the feel of a police station on Earth. He imagined
that being the head of Security on a starbase was much like that, dealing
as much with civilian issues as he did with military ones.

They stepped into the office and and announced them, “Chief Samuels, these
are the two I found poking around on the promenade at the cite of the
incident. Lt. Taylor and Lt. Trei.”

Samuels was sitting behind a large desk. He was a large, muscular man who
some might consider intimidating. Sitting back in his chair he looked
relaxed and at home.

“Officers,” he said, his voice disarmingly pleasant, “welcome to Starbase
Freedom. I understand you came in with Dr. Solice earlier today.”

Taylor nodded, “We did.”

“I think Captain Dahr had a welcoming party planned for your crew, but
you’re a little early.”

“Doctor Solice was… anxious to get to Cap…Lt. Weston. It’s… complicated.”

“Not really,” he shrugged and sat forward. “I met her earlier. You can tell
she’s used to getting her way.”

Andy chuckled, “You could say that.”

“I did say that,” Samuels said, standing up and moving around the desk.
“I’ve found that many who serve on a starship seem to carry a similar
entitlement. They all want to do things their own way with little to no
regards to our rules and protocols. Much like you two crossing a well
marked restricted area.”

Andy nodded, “I see your point, and I do apologize. We had intended to
come and see you right away, but I just wanted to see the blast point with
my own eyes first, and, well, it was on the way here. I may have been a
little overzealous and overstepped the boundaries of protocol. But we’re
here now.”

“Indeed you are,” Samuels looked at them carefully.Taylor realized that the
man wasn’t that large, he just gave an aura, an appearance of being much
larger than he was. It was almost an optical illusion. But at least he
seemed friendly enough. “And why, may I ask, are you here?”

“We wanted to see what we could do the help your investigation into the
explosion,” Taylor said.

Samuels looked intrigues, but Andy wondered if it wasn’t edged with a hint
of sarcasm, “Really, because you feel that my people aren’t up to your
standards.” It was a statement not a question.

Taylor held up his hands, “That is not what I’m saying, Chief. I do have a
certain set of skills in the area of explosives that very few have. I used
to be an Ordinance expert for the MEF on Mars, so yes, I may have some
insights that you don’t have access to typically.”

Samuels looked at Taylor deeply. As an El Aurian the one thing that he did
know how to do was to listen. To listen and hear the truth in what people
said. Finally he nodded and indicated to Trei, “And you, what to you have
to offer than I don’t already have?”

(reply Trei)
