(USS Raptor - Deck 5 - Sickbay - Dr. Kyllee Stev, CEO Lieutenant Jg Tegian Pex -0625)
Stev moved over to Pex’s biobed. He had managed to croak out a request for water. A nurse had braced him to sit up and handed him a flask. He looked at the bio scans from the bed before he began to speak.
“Welcome back, Mr. Pex,” Kylle said. “How are you feeling?”
Tegian had finished drinking all the water in the flask and was looking around for more. “Hi Dr. Stev. I’m good. Hungry and thirsty and worried about Ensign Pirippi and what I might have done to her, but I feel fine.”
Kyllee nodded and used his node on his right arm, “It looks like your right arm was broken and then set…. and your right wrist. The work of the ever impressive Dr. Solice, I assume.” He put the node down and began to feel the affected areas with his hands. “How does your arm feel now?”
Tegian flexed his arm. “Dr Solice did an amazing job on it considering I flipped over a row of seats, slammed into the bulkhead and tried to break my fall using my right arm. Unsuccessfully, I might add. I also banged my head and lost consciousness. She fixed that as well.”
“Yeah,” Stev said, running the scanner over Pex’s head, “I was going to mention that. A minor concussion. Let us know if you start getting a headache.”
“Doctor, how is the Ensign? I was worried there was going to be permanent damage from using her VISOR in that manner. Every simulation I ran convinced me that I had made it impossible for the external power to be channeled back to her. All she was going to be doing was directly what channel the outbound signal was going to be sent. She wasn’t going to use any of her body’s energy to do it. So, I don’t know what happened to her. We monitored her vitals and the VISOR while she sent the signal and everything was fine, until all of a sudden, she wasn’t. But, it was after the signal had been sent and we’d disconnected the external power source.”
“She is fine,” Kyllee told him. “I’m no engineer, but I do know something about her implants, and how they’re supposed to be used. The implants were meant to receive signals and translate them for her brain. In this case they were being used as transmitters. They just didn’t hold up to that strain.” He put a hand on his shoulder, “You can’t blame yourself. You were working outside of the parameters of her VISOR. And there was really no way to know how the space you were in would affect the communication.”
Tegian nodded and then sighed in relief. “Could… could I read up on her implants? When we were trapped in the shuttle with no power, I had no access to anything about her VISOR or implants. I had to learn about her VISOR by using what spare parts were in the shuttle and running dummy programs on the available PADDs to try and get information on its capabilities. While the implants are your realm, the VISOR is going to be my responsibility and I should know how it’s all supposed to work.” He looked over at the Ensign. “I don’t want to put her in danger like that again if I can help it.”
Stev shrugged, “It’s not restricted material so I’m sure there’s no problem with you having access. Bohb might be a big help with that. Sounds like something right up his alley. As far as putting her in danger, that’s as much her decision as anyone else’s. I can’t imagine T’Mur not voicing a similar concern at the time.”
Tegian nodded. “Good idea. “Bohb has been a good mentor and friend. We had little choice in the matter with respect to using the Ensign’s VISOR. No one could come up with any other method in trying to send a call for help. And, yes the Commander and the Doctor were concerned with the choice.”
Stev put a hand on the engineer's shoulder, “If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years it’s you can’t hold yourself accountable for the decisions of someone else. Even if it’s someone you care about.”
Tegian stiffened. “No, that’s not it, Doctor. It was my duty to protect her from my work. Just like it was my responsibility to make sure that I did everything to make sure that Lieutenant Tempest had every erg available to her to make sure the shuttle got out of that dimension and the EV suits were as safe as I could make them. Anything but my best to make sure the technology works. That’s what worries me.”
Stev shrugged, “Well you’re here now, Tegian, so I guess you must have done your job.”
Tegian nods. “Looks like it. Thanks for the talk, doctor. Am I allowed to leave? It’s been a while since I’ve eaten, showered or slept in a comfortable position and I’d like to do all three, although not at the same time. And I might have to do the showering before anyone will let me eat outside my quarters.”
Stev chuckled, “You must have heard my prescription for the others.”
Tegian shook his head. “No, but Pex was a doctor in another host. Common sense and I can smell myself. Most unpleasant.” Tegian looked around the room at the others interacting. “I didn’t want to interrupt or eavesdrop on any of them, so I was reviewing all my decisions over the past few days and trying to decide what I should have done differently knowing what I know now. I don’t have enough information to have made any other decisions, so I’m just going to have to be satisfied with the ones I made and leave it at that.”
Tegian got up from his biobed. “Do you have clothes for us or are we expected to leave in these ridiculous gowns?”
Kyllee nodded to one of the techs who dropped Pex’s uniform on the edge of the bed. “There you go Tegian. And for your information, these gowns are utilitarian, not ridiculous.”
With that he turned and left Pex to dress.
Tegian laughed. “I wonder how often you’ve had to be in one, Doctor.” Tegian said, “Thank you,” to the tech. And then he got dressed and left Sickbay to return to his quarters for a shower, food at the Officer’s mess and then back to his quarters for as much sleep as he wanted.
