Mission: Exogenesis
Day: 4
Stardate: 2446.06.04

(USS Iluminar - Deck 1 - Bridge - Ops - Ensign (sg) William the Android -
1133)

William the Android or William for short, sometimes called Bill was present
at the console routinely manned by operations to the right of the command
chair.

William's story is filled with twists and turns due to the affiliation of
his creator the Professor Jonathon Perkins who was a member of the renegade
organization Roanoke. What is Roanoke you ask? The question is not is but
was, because you see Roanoke no longer exists thanks to the effort of
William.

Roanoke in its aim and goal could be likened to the Mirror Universe Terran
Empire in its infancy. For three decades the Federation had gone into
withdrawal, pulling back from its outer systems, leaving member worlds
unprotected (who justifiably left its fold), disbanded its protective
fleets, mothballed all but a few of its ships and cowered within its core
systems. Some members such as Vulcan retained their ships and re-purposed
them for defense but as far as the governing authority was concerned as a
whole StarFleet no longer existed.

Why? It's actually very simple.... cowardice.

The seat of the Federation you see, Terra, Earth had been the victim of
numerous attacks, the Breen, the Borg, a civil war.... yes, the Civil War
started the decline and the descent was precipitous. That civil war
dethroned a pretender to power at the cost of many millions of lives and
Andoria is still a staunch holdout from the organization it helped form
because of it.

At any rate Roanoke sought to end this self-imposed isolation through
force. To rekindle StarFleet but use it not for exploration but to pacify
the enemies of the Federation through overwhelming force. They had high
ranking political drivers as well as the bulk of the Admiralty who were
sacked after their plots and affiliations were exposed. But Roanoke
continued to exist on the fringe of power, their primary platform being in
the Altair system, technically defensive/interdiction platform 7.

That is where William the Android was created, modeled on the androids of
Dr. Soong. Sporting the positronic matrix that had qualified one of his as
a life form which in the end was that organization's undoing.

William bore no resemblance outwardly to Data, his synthetic flesh was
modeled on an existing being, Commander William Hardy who oversaw DP7. The
reason? He was created to replace him. And replace him he did. William had
been well indoctrinated into Roanoke's aims which seemed outwardly
pragmatic. Protect the Federation and its citizens at all costs.

But what are some constituent qualities of a life form? It grows, it
learns...it evolves. And William like Data had grown beyond the sum of his
programming and information which weighed decidedly in Roanoke's favor. The
more he learned the more he realized Roanoke was wrong. And when ordered to
take the life of an Illuminar officer when the ship was investigating the
station and its membership he had refused, instead he had been forced to
kill his handler who left him no choice but to defend himself. And then he
had turned over everything he knew about the organization, codes, names and
locations.

William wasn't completely trusted yet by most but he was winning converts
through his dedication and actions.

Isn't that what every cadet does in the end as they work their way up the
ranks?

"Commander, a hail coming in from the Leif Erikson."

=^=Illuminar this is the Leif Erikson. Quarantine protocols are hereby
initiated. Prepare to transport all aboard to the isolation ward upon our
return. I repeat, quarantine protocols are in effect. No crew are to come
into contact with those on the Leif Erikson without full biohazard
equipment and the shuttle is to be quarantined on deck until it can be
safely sterilized.=^=

Commander Verin answered the communication and readied sickbay to deal with
the quarantine.

"Operations interface with Engineering and get that shuttle sterilized.
Quickly."

William was quickly on his feet. "Yes sir." Having spoken he hustled to the
lift as she commed Lieutenant Bohb, the Chief of Scientific R&D aboard.

"Bohb, this is Verin. The Captain has declared a biohazard quarantine and
I need the shuttle they are going to be docking to be sterilized asap. I'm
sending the android to assist you."

The door closed leaving him alone. His name was William and yes he was an
android. He was also a commissioned officer on the Illuminar who was well
versed in doing his job. She hadn't addressed Lieutenant Bohb the Magillan,
nor was anyone else aboard addressed with such a suffix. He was an android
and would always be an android. Perhaps one day the suffix would no longer
be necessary. At least it was to be hoped.

"Deck 10, shuttlebay."

(USS Iluminar - Deck 10 - Shuttlebay - Ops - Ensign (sg) William the
Android - 1138)

William was waiting outside the shuttlebay doors as Bohb approached.
William had no biohazard suit, he didn't need one. He didn't need air to
breath, had no internal organs to become infected and while the shuttle was
being sterilized by a local, energetic field of ionized, radioactive
particles it would sterilize him as well. To protect his sensitive optics
he merely had to close his eyelids.

William had a tricorder on a strap slung across his shoulders and was
carrying a heavy, wide dispersal particle beam emitter by one arm. The unit
was normally carried on an anti-gravity sled as it required two people to
properly carry and position. The unit was well within the parameters of his
strength to deploy.

"Lieutenant Bohb the shuttle has not yet arrived. In the interest of time
and due to the Commanders order I thought it expedient to have the
equipment available and on site when it landed."

A voice came over the hanger intercom. =^=Leif Erikson approaching, ETA two
minutes.=^=

(Reply: Bohb)

"The unit is fully charged."

The portal opened and he stepped inside. The hanger door was already open
and the force field established to retain atmosphere and pressure.

"The Commander seemed to be quite worried about those aboard though we
don't know yet if they are showing signs of a contagion."

(Reply: Bohb)
