Mission: Prelude
Day: 2
SD: 2446.03.24

(USS Illuminar — Deck 1 — Ready Room — CO, Captain Sekal— 1250)

The Captain had a great number of things occupying his attention at this
time. The debrief from the preceding mission was scheduled for tomorrow
morning at 0800, most prominent of the items to be touched on was the
encounter with three Klingon warships in Romulan space which had resulted
in the destruction of two of their vessels and damage to the ship. It was
proof that the Admiralty had been seeking, that the Klingon Empire's
expansionist plans within formerly Star Empire space was proceeding at a
rapid pace.

Sekal was aware of overtures from the Romulan Republic via the Exeter to
StarFleet and a stated desire for close ties perhaps including admission in
the future. This could be logically expected to cause rising tensions
between the Klingons and the Federation. If he was correct then it would be
a cause of some concern. StarFleet had rebounded within the last three
years and leaped forward to some semblance of parity but only in
technology, in numbers of ships and armed combatants the Federation was
woefully outnumbered. Despite advances made it could only be assumed that
hostilities would be bloody for both sides and victory on the part of the
Federation could not be assured.

Did this tie into the next mission planned for the Illuminar? So far
Command had been tight-lipped on the subject.

But something else had piqued his interest, a communique from the commander
of the Academy concerning an officer who had been routed to the ship. Luma
had recently rebounded with Temas Laredo and was quite busy which left him
with:

"Computer, query Iotian."

[Iotian, resident species of Beta Ionis. Initial contact by the exploratory
ship Horizon, estimated year 2165. Visited in 2267 by the USS Enterprise
under command of James T. Kirk. Humanoid. Found to have been culturally
contaminated by a book written on Earth circa 1993 concerning the Chicago
mobs of the United States, Earth circa 1930 to 1940.

Iotian, a highly adaptive society, noted to be extremely intelligent and
flexible to change. Their society however continues to use the book as the
foundation of cultural relevance.]

"Interesting. What was the result of the encounter?"

[Iotia agreed to become a protectorate of the United Federation of Planets
under discussions held by James T. Kirk. One StarFleet vessel sent annually
to recieve a portion of the generated wealth accumulated by the signatory
mob bosses. Funds have been used to educate the Iotians concerning peaceful
coexistence. Results mixed.]

An eyebrow rose. "Fascinating."

He deactivated the computer then sat back in the chair, what form would a
specimen of such a culture take? According to the Academy commandant he
would find out soon.
